Joe Madden's deft hand at managing the brilliant Theo Epstein Cubs. There were some events more recognized as someone's loss than another's win: Jordan Spieth's collapse, allowing Danny Willet to add a green jacket to his wardrobe being the foremost example thereof. Tyson Fury, who acts like a loser, wobbled around the ring to beat Vladimir Klitschko for what used to be the well-respected heavyweight belt. Tom Brady, in one of the stupidest suspensions in NFL history, missed four games. (Way to market your stars, Goodell.) And then there were those who slipped this vale of tears. Giants like Ali, Arnie and Gordie are gone. Legends from the past century, their names will forever remain in the upper echelon of sporting statistics, men of exceeding valor both in their respective sports and away from the cheers of the crowd in gainful retirement. They will be missed, but this year, one of the greatest in recent sports history, will not be forgotten.

Say what you will about 2016, but if you thought it was boring you have got to get your head checked. It was a year of stunning achievements. Without question, the highlight being the Chicago Cubs finally winning a World Series, ending the Hack Wilson era. It was a year that saw LeBron James cement his all-time superstar legacy by bringing a championship back to Cleveland, a year that saw Peyton Manning leave on top. The Golden State Warriors did their best Seattle Mariners impression, setting the mark for the best regular season record, then not winning it all at the end. Villanova kept Philadelphia basketball front and center, taking the NCAA tournament. Alabama continues to roll in college football, and Penn State returned to the good graces of the game. The

REP. CAVALETTO SUMMER READING PROGRAM RESULTS State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem), announced recently that for the third year in a row, St. Elmo Public Library District has had the highest number of student participants in his Summer Reading Club. Fifteen libraries in eleven library districts participated this year representing 13 communities around the 107th District including: Altamont, Brownstown, Centralia, Effingham, Farina, Greenville, Ramsey, S a l e m , S h u m w a y, Smithboro, St. Elmo, Vandalia and Vernon. “Congratulations to St.

Elmo and a big Thank You to all of the library directors who work hard to encourage children to read,” said Rep. Cavaletto, a retired teacher, coach and administrator for 38 years. “The Summer Reading Club encourages 1st through 5th graders to continue reading throughout their summer vacation and encourages children to read everything from poetry and biographies to science, nature and mysteries. I believe reading exposes young people to the world and helps develop their reasoning and critical thinking abilities,” added Cavaletto.

The St. Elmo Public Library District now has 3 libraries—St. Elmo Public Library, Beecher City Br an ch L i br ar y an d Brownstown Branch Library and serves over 6,000 people. There are over 50,000 books on the shelves and up-to-date public access computers. In addition the libraries subscribe to nearly 30 magazines and local newspapers. Also available for checkout are DVDs and audio books. Each library has a children’s area and

offers various programs and crafts year round. The District also belongs to Southern Illinois Libraries on the Go which gives access to many eBooks. St. Elmo is in the heart of the Loudon oil pool which was the 2nd largest oil pool in the contiguous United States, has two railroads, agriculture, and had an airport where Charles Lindbergh landed to visit a friend who lived in St. Elmo. It was also the home for the Kanatzer bloodhounds.

Q: I spend my summer vacations in New Hampshire, where I have found dozens of excellent Indian artifacts, including arrowheads and an occasional tool. Can you recommend a good reference book so I can find out more about the specimens I have? — Jon, Atlanta A: There are several excellent references, but my favorite is "The Official Overstreet Indian Arrowheads: Identification and Price Guide," by Robert M. Overstreet and published by House of Collectibles. Overstreet's guide features more than 8,000 actual-size photographs, up-to-date regional market reports, tips

on grading and advice on how to buy authentic relics. This is the professional standard reference for America's oldest collectible. I found several copies at www.abe. com. *** Q: I have a plate that my mom purchased during the early 1950s. It is signed Anna Mary Robertson Moses. What can you tell me about it? — Rhonda, Davenport, Iowa A: Anna Mary Robertson Moses was known throughout the world as Grandma Moses, a famous folk artist who began her art career in earnest when she was 78 years old. She was born in Greenwich, New York, in 1861, and died in Hoosick

Falls, New York, in 1961. Her artwork can be found in major museums. Her painting "The Sugaring Off " sold for $1.2 million in 2006. In 1950, a registration mark was secured, and soon the Atlas China Company was issuing plates that featured some of the designs of Grandma Moses. They are identified with marks that say either "A Grandma Moses Product" or "Anna Mary Robertson Moses." *** Q: I am renovating and restoring a house that was built in 1885 and is considered to be a good example of the Victorian style. My problem is that I would like to wallpaper the downstairs parlors, a hallway, entryway

If anyone is wondering how Trump got elected to be the 45th President of our great country, I would suggest that, along with Hillary Clinton missteps, it has a lot to do with the good ol' boys and girls club, everyone from Dick Durbin, Michael Madigan, and Cory Booker to John Lewis, just to name a few. Off the top of my head I could easily name 100 Republicans and Democrats. Over 50% of the American people are fed up with the corruption, the bullying, the lying, the cheating and the long-term politicians that, in my opinion, should have been voted out years ago, and others who are just puppets. Let's begin with this week's confirmation hearing, which I found disgraceful, starting with Cory Booker. In Mr. Booker's own words, he said, "Today I broke with Senate tradition and testified against the nomination of one of my colleagues, Senator Jeff Sessions." Remember, leading up to the 2016 Presidential elections, Booker had endorsed Hillary Clinton. In my own words, I would say Booker tried to trash Jeff Sessions, Trump's pick for Attorney General, as a coming out party for his run in the 2020 Presidential election, in typical good ol' boy fashion, to try to intimidate or control. Booker, a former Newark mayor, became the first senator to testify against another's nomination to the Cabinet. For anyone that saw it, this confirmation hearing just used Jeff Sessions to beat up Donald Trump. But the ugly truth about Democrat Cory Booker, New Jersey's golden boy, is Booker has been in Washington posting selfies with his fellow good ol' boys, vowing to reform the criminal justice system. Yet months after he first entered the Senate, the New Jersey Comptroller alleged that under Booker's watch, corruption ran rampant

at a publicly funded water treatment and reservoir management agency. Folks, that's just a start! Then, of course, there was the confirmation hearing on Rex Tillerson, Trump's pick for Secretary of State. Senator Marco Rubio, (R-FL) questioned Mr. Tillerson on Russia and Vladimir Putin, and Rubio (another good ol' boy) made a total fool of himself, actually criticizing Tillerson for his hesitation to label Putin a war criminal, and for his "inability to cite that which is globally accepted." But when questioned about a Muslim registry, Tillerson stated he did not support a registry targeting any particular group. And so the hearings went, in much of the questioning. It appeared to be another Bash Trump session. Many of those questioning were beating their chests and they showed little concern for the real issues. I'd love to buy them for what they're worth and sell them for what they think they're worth. These confirmation hearing were nothing but a clown show. Ne x t up, C N N and BuzzFeed's latest fake news: "Russia has information to blackmail Donald Trump." Again, the latest attempt to stop President-Elect Trump turned out to be fake, fake, fake. Sorry, folks, I would have done the same thing to the CNN reporter asking Trump a question, except I would not have been as nice. In my opinion, CNN (Clinton News Network) has lost all credibility. So why aren't they reporting the real news, like Barack Obama, eight days before Trump steps into the White House, sent 4,000 American troops to the Polish border facing Russia. There was an agreement with NATO to do this very thing 12 months ago! Why would Obama do it now, except to flex his muscles! Is

this another retaliation for Hillary Clinton losing the election? What a man! What a man! What a man! But what I find almost unforgiveable is this week congressman John Lewis said he would not accept Donald Trump as President because of the Russian involvement in the election Folks, no one changed the course of this election except the good ol' boys and girls club (Hillary Clinton and the DNC) and fed up Americans. For John Lewis to say Donald Trump's election was not legitimate is a totally irresponsible statement. Rich Lowry said Sunday morning of John Lewis, "Congressman Lewis is working through his grief." And with that said, I agree. However, I also recognize John Lewis is an icon in the civil rights movement, and no one can take that away from him. But on to the good ol' boys and girls club. In Springfield, IL, I am sorry to report it's not a new day. Democrat Michael Madigan was voted in for the 17th term — yes, 17 terms — to serve once again as the Speaker of the House. Now if this isn't good ol' boy mentality I don't know what is. And of course we all know how well it's worked in Illinois! The same way it's worked in Washington the last eight years. In closing, I got a postcard from a reader in Salem this week that hit the nail on the head. She wrote, "This mentality could perhaps explain how President-elect Trump won the nomination." Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

A Good, Good Father One of the greatest discoveries you can make is that God is a good, good Father. Chris Tomlin sings the song, “Good, Good Father” — “That’s who he is, that’s who he is.” Jesus reveals a good, good Father in Matthew 7:1-14. A GO OD, GO OD FATHER WHO ACCEPTS US. Many view God as a Father who is distant, cold, and severe in judgement. Jesus taught an important principle, “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgement you judge, you will be judged.” (Matthew 7:1-5) The disciples saw a blind man and asked Jesus, “’Who sinned, the blind man or his parents that he was born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘Neither . . . but that the works of God should be revealed in him.’” (John 9:3) Our Father doesn’t judge us by our outer appearance. I overheard a gentleman describe a repair problem as “an ac-

cident waiting to happen.” But our Father doesn’t view us as a victim of fate, but as a miracle waiting to happen. Through Christ Jesus, “He has made us accepted in the beloved.” (Ephesians 1:5-6) A GO OD, GO OD FATHER WHO BIDS US TO ASK. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives.” (Matthew 7:7-8) During a church service at the county jail, I asked for prayer requests. A young man raised his hand and said, “I apologize for asking prayer for myself, but I need help.” Many have the mistaken view of this young man. They feel that God is too busy or big to care about their needs or other people have more urgent needs. That is wrong thinking. God cares about every detail of our life. A woman died and went to heaven. Jesus appeared to her and told her

that he was sending her back with two messages. “Tell people they must repent of their sins and tell my people to ask me! I have so much to give them but they must ask.” Jesus taught us to persevere in prayer. To ask, seek, and knock. A GO OD, GO OD FAT H E R WHO ANSWERS PRAYER. “Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread will give him a serpent.” (Matthew 7:9-10) Of course not! How much more will our good, good Father give us what is good “Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.” (Ephesians 3:20) David declared, “In the day when I cried out, you answered me and made me bold with strength in my soul.” (Psalm 138:3) A GO OD, GO OD FAT H E R WHO ACCORDS HIS CHILDREN GIFTS. Jesus said, “If you then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him.” (Matthew 7:11) Think about this — if you have committed your life to Christ, you are really his child! lights to give good things to his children. Luke tells us that the greatest gift he gives, along with his only begotten Son, is the gift of the Holy Spirit. “How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.’ (Luke 11:13) Have you asked for the gift of the Holy Spirit? Expect a good, good Father to give Him to you and the gifts of the Spirit. (I Corinthians 12:31) But Jesus adds this caveat, “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12) A good, good Father requires us to live like a child of God — to walk in love. We have a good, good Father who gave his only begotten son. “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us, therefore, come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

I have a dear friend right now that has an incredible sweet tooth. She has developed a liking for brownies. After a number of brownies including double chocolate chocolate, I've decided to try something else, since whatever I make for her I have to make the same for my family. In desperation, I am off and running for other favorite recipes to make, anything but chocolate. So in true southern tradition, I turned to my all time favorite, pecan pie. Another southern favorite is pound cake, a staple in every southern home. And if all else fails, there are always blond brownies.

CONTROLLED PHEASANT HUNTING SEASON EXTENDED AT FOUR IDNR SITES The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) today announced that the controlled pheasant hunting season has been extended at four IDNR sites, and hunters can make reser vations now for additional hunting opportunities this month. The four sites with e x te nd e d c ont rol l e d pheasant seasons are Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area in Clinton County, Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area in Cass County, Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area in Henry County, and the Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area in Franklin and Jefferson Counties. Ten hunting days - Wednesday,

January 11 through Sunday, January 22 – have been added to the seasons at Eldon Hazlet SRA and Wayne Fitzgerrell SRA. Five days – Wednesday, January 11 through Sunday, January 15 – have been added to the season at Johnson-Sauk Trail SRA. Ten days – Wednesday, January 18 through Sunday, January 29 – have been added to the season at Jim Edgar Panther Creek SFWA. Hunters are encouraged to use the online Controlled Phe a s ant Hu nt i ng Reservation System at www.dnr.illinois.gov to obtain permits for these additional hunt dates. Reserved permits ensure hunters will have the

opportunity to hunt. Hunters using reserved permits also ensure that site staff on these sites can release two pheasants per hunter each day, which is the Department’s objective for pheasants released on each hunt date. Standby permits are also available at the site, although standby hunting opportunities may be limited or unavailable if the hunter quota for a hunt date is filled by reserved permit hunters. To access the reservation system: Access the "Hunt/ Trap" drop down list from the toolbar on the IDNR Home Page; Then click on “Upland Game”; Then click on "Controlled Pheasant Areas" under the “Licenses and permits” heading.

SEVEN ILLINOIS COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO RECEIVE $3 MILLION IN EMERGENCY FUNDS The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) announces the following community college districts will receive emergency funding: Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Kaskaskia College,

STION E U Q OF THE When I was a child, my Grandpa Kell said the first ground covering that we have, whatever day it falls on, thatʼs how many snowfalls we will have. Do you have an old wives tale from when you were growing up? Oh, and so everyone knows, the first snowfall and ground covering was January 5. Letʼs count, shall we?

Lake Land College, John A. Logan College, Rend Lake College, Shawnee Community College, and Southeastern Community College. A total of $3 million will be distributed equally among the seven districts, with each district set to receive $428,571.42 in financial support for essential operations. The districts were selected based on criteria established by the board during a special meeting on December 7, 2016. The criteria was formulated on

the assumption that districts with the least amount of local property tax funding will have the hardest time operating without State funding. Colleges meeting this criterion were also required to demonstrate evidence of measures taken to reduce expenditures that required a reduction in staff and programs. The emergency funds announced ... ensure those community colleges with the fewest financial resources can continue to operate

while we wait for the General Assembly to pass a full, comprehensive balanced budget,” said ICCB chair Dr. Lazaro Lopez. “Despite today’s action, community colleges across the state will continue to struggle without the adequate resources and predictability that comes with a full-year state budget and structural changes to fix the overall system.” Although this announcement is welcome news for the state’s most vulnerable community college dis-

tricts, there remains a great need system-wide. In September 2016, the ICCB passed a resolution declaring a state of emergency for the entire community college system due to the drastic loss of state revenue over the last two years. The Illinois Community College Board is the state coordinating board for community colleges. Illinois is home to 48 community colleges in 39 districts and has the third largest community college system in the nation serving nearly 850,000 residents each year in credit and non-credit courses.

Letter of Thanks I would like to thank all of my loyal customers for their patronage and friendship during my time of being the owner of the Centralia Sears Hometown Store. I began this adventure January 2006 and what a time I had. I became so blessed making friendships with residents in the community and surrounding areas. Debbie and Bill Smith It was very difficult to make the decision to retire from the store. The most traumatic loss was not seeing our friends / customers on a regular basis. The most positive part of the decision was no more Black Fridays and more time to spend with family.

Your loyalty to us meant more than you will ever know. Shopping locally means a lot to a business owner, and I believe my customers gave me the first opportunity. On to the brighter side, I have decided to not fully retire and sit on a beach. I have been afforded the opportunity to do what I know best — selling appliances. I can now be found at the Centralia Home Center with a new beautiful display of Whirlpool branded appliances which include Amana, Maytag and KitchenAid. I invite you to come and see us for any needs you may have in appliances. Centralia Home Center is also a great place for any remodeling needs you may have. The popcorn and coffee are fresh and waiting for you. If no purchases are necessary, that is fine, come and see me — I miss you!

When Is It Time to Say Goodbye? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As my dog gets older, I’ve been thinking more about when the time comes that we’ll lose her. She doesn’t have serious health issues now, just a little arthritis, but I wonder what I would do if she approached the end of her life and were suffering. How do you know when it’s “time”? There is always such love and trust toward us humans, how do we know when the lack of quality of life outweighs our desire to care for and protect man’s best friend? Lack of control over bowel seems like a good marker, as does difficulty standing and lethargy. What guidelines do you suggest? — Amy M., via email DEAR AMY: There are few clear guidelines for when it’s time to make that final trip to the veterinarian and say our goodbyes to a beloved pet. vet and with the other members of your family. A number of factors come into play when determining end-of-life care for your pet. Their general physical condition and behavior; the disease(s) they’re suffering from; their symptoms (and whether they’re treatable); and more. I’ve heard many anecdotes from pet owners about their

dog or cat or Guinea pig’s last days. Each loss is different. And while there are some signs that a dog’s time is approaching, as you outlined, often a pet has many more days and even years left. So, I don’t have an easy answer. I do have a wish for your dog, that she has a happy and illness-free senior life for as long as possible. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the 34th president of the United States, who made the following sage observation: "I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have persuaded him he will stick. If I scare him, he will stay just as long as he is scared,

and then he is gone." • The biggest polar bear ever recorded weighed a whopping 2,209 pounds — roughly the weight of 12 adult men. • Russian health authorities are very familiar with cold-weather injuries — and fatalities. For instance, every winter, about 100 Russians are killed by falling icicles. • Noon and midnight

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your batteries should be fully recharged by now, making you more than eager to get back into the swing of things full time. Try to stay focused so that you don’t dissipate your energies. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re eager to charge straight ahead into your new responsibilities. But you’ll have to paw the ground a little longer, until a surprise complication is worked out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Rival factions are pressuring you to take a stand favoring one side or the other. But this isn’t the time to play judge. Bow out as gracefully as possible, without committing yourself to any position. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Reassure a longtime, trusted confidante that you appreciate his or her words of advice. But at this time, you need to act on what you perceive to be your own sense of self-interest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You need to let your warm Leonine heart fire up that new relationship if you hope to see it move from the “just friends” level to one that will be as romantic as you could hope for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There’s still time to repair a misunderstanding with an honest explanation and a heartfelt apology. The sooner you do, the sooner you can get on with other matters. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect a temporary setback as you

are the only times that have their own names. The origin of the term "midnight" is obvious, since it occurs in the middle of the night, but how did 12 p.m. come to be called noon? The word itself is derived from the Latin word "nono," which means "nine." Still doesn't seem to make sense? Here's how lexicographers trace the evolution of the word: If hours are counted from dawn — roughly 6 a.m. — instead of midnight, nine hours into the day would be 3 p.m., or midafternoon. Lacking accurate portable timepieces, ancient Romans used the term "nono" to

progress toward your goal. Use this time to re-examine your plans and see where you might need to make some significant changes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some missteps are revealed as the cause of current problems in a personal or professional partnership. Make the necessary adjustments and then move on. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Jupiter’s influence helps you work through a pesky problem, allowing your naturally jovial attitude to re-emerge stronger than ever. Enjoy your success. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Set aside your usual reluctance to change, and consider reassessing your financial situation so that you can build on its strengths and minimize its weaknesses. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some recently acquired information helps open up a dark part of the past. Resolve to put what you’ve learned to good use. Travel plans continue to be favored. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Act on your own keen instincts. Your strong Piscean backbone will support you as someone attempts to pressure you into a decision you’re not ready to make. BORN THIS WEEK: You embody a love for traditional values combined with an appreciation of what’s new and challenging. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

refer to the midafternoon in a general sense. Over time, as the pronunciation of the word shifted to "noon," the meaning of the word shifted to "midday." Once society began to be run according to the accuracy of clocks, noon was pinpointed as 12 p.m. • Some police departments in Canada are known for giving out "positive tickets" — citations for doing something good in public. Thought for the Day: "Few things are harder to put up with than a good example." — Mark Twain © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
