unable to stomach the slight, Jed took every opportunity to point out shortcomings in Harbaugh's game plan. Har b au g h l e f t for Michigan after being fired amid a slew of stories that were obviously leaked by Jed and then-49ers GM Trent Maalke. There would be some who would (wrongly) point out parallels between him and George Steinbrenner III. George used to love talking about how he was captain of the high-school football team. He too was keen on firing coaches and leaking damaging information to the press. The comparison stops there, as Steinbrenner had true business acumen and after a fan revolt, mellowed enough to find the right set of winners. After firing Chip Kelly, an uncharacteristically brazen press started asking Jed questions about his future as CEO. Fans and columnists in the Bay Area alike are calling for his removal, a move that would seem likely if the team plans on getting any head coach with substance to take over the job and carry the once-great team back to the heights of success.

It's On You, Jed York In October 2010, after a close loss to Philadelphia, ESPN's Adam Schefter received not so much a text as a bold proclamation. The message was from Jed York, the 30-year-old CEO of the 0-5 San Francisco 49ers, and it simply stated "We're going to win the division." The message was ridiculed. The 49ers under Mike Singletary — a head coach who mooned his team — looked to be careening out of control, far removed from the stately grace of Bill Walsh or precision play the team used to execute under Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig. Making bold predictions doesn't make them smart or learned takes on a situation ... it just makes them bold. I went into a new diner and the menu was typed out in bold comic sans, it didn't help the meatloaf one bit. The 49ers would almost pull it off though, but York's star didn't rise

Unlike his very well-respected father, John York, one of the countr y's foremost cancer researchers and great philanthropist, Jed fit the mold of the rich kid who didn't earn his spot ... the kid born on the opponent's one-yard line who thinks he just ran back a kickoff for 99 yards. speakOUT letters to the editor

A fair number of parents who read this Speak Out will have children that will graduate from high school. I hope by now that most have considered their child and college. Actually their thoughts might be motivated by getting the child out of the house. Then others send the child to a college because of a scholarship to a certain college. Then there is a family that hasn't the funds to send their child to higher learning. Let's take a different approach before you make a decision about college for your child. First, your child's IQ will not change from high school and after graduation from college. They will have expanded their knowledge after four years of college. Secondly, your child possesses one of four basic traits; is your child college material? Finally, where you sleep and eat will not make one smarter! I don't think I have to remind you that your child will be ahead of most college

graduates when leaving college without student debts. A great start would be to avoid expenses by attending a local junior college one or more years. Remember your child's IQ will not change and most schools will expand the child's knowledge. After junior college, transfer to an in-state four year college to earn a degree. Finally, there is the expense of sleeping and eating. For this the cost can vary widely. For me, it was a private home with rooms on the second floor and eating at the Baptist Student Union. It took me six years to get my degree, with a break after twoand-a-half years. I only offer food for thought, and as parents, the path for your child's life should be your choice. It would be a mistake to match experience and expense of your child versus their friends. Finally, I know of two men who are now 40 to 50 years of age. They are both successful in their own way. One skipped

college and served four years in the Army. The other went to a small college in his home town. During college he was married, and worked full time. The success of these two was a strong IQ, good work ethics, and a strong desire to succeed.

KC ADJUNCT PROFESSOR AND BEEKEEPER WRITES AND DONATES BOOK What started out as a childhood interest in spiders and insects, generated a hobby of beekeeping that has kept Terry Combs of Keyesport interested since 1966 when he earned his Boy Scout Beekeeping Merit Badge. From there, he sought a beekeeping mentor and has spent a lifetime learning from these marvelous creatures, who

are so crucial to our world. A 2005 graduate of Kaskaskia College with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Business Ma n a g e m e nt a n d a Certificate of Supervision, Combs has now taught close to 30 beekeeping classes for KC. He notes, “Teaching the community beekeeping is needed on several fronts, for the

will keep everyone turning the pages. KC’s Coordinator of Industrial and Continuing Education, Cydney Richardson says, “We are so pleased to have Terry on board in the Community Education Department. He provides valuable beekeeping instruction to our students. With the rise of farm to fork eating, and people becoming more interested in where their food comes from these classes are be-

benefit of bees and humans”. His new book, “The Boy Scout, the Beekeeper and the Bees” is an exciting blend of advocacy for honey bees, personal career exploration, and the importance of creating competent beekeepers. For novice or lifelong beekeepers as well as anyone interested in the complex roles bees play in our ecosystem, this book

Wednesday, January 25, 2017 coming more and more important”. Combs continues to draw on the knowledge of bee researchers and scientists as he starts his book with the history, current state, and possible future of beekeeping and then begins to unravel the process of becoming a beekeeper, the yearly chores and considerations, and the problems encountered, with advice on how to deal with them. “ The Boy Scout, the Beekeeper and the Bees ends on a positive note about the current bee crisis and our planet as a whole”.

Combs retired from Consol Energy as an underground coal miner and is now employed as a custodian/laborer at Greenville Auto Body in Greenville, IL. Full-time beekeeper and grandfather, Combs and his wife Debbie are the parents of two sons, Rance (wife Hana) and Blake (wife Jen) and the grandparents of Owen, Zayra, Brynn, and Maxene. A public book signing will be held on Sunday, February 19 at the Farm B u re au B u i l d i n g i n Greenville from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

By Larry Cox Shoes of Glass Q: My late aunt had a small collection of about a dozen glass shoes. Are they worth keeping? — Beth, Waco, Texas A: Little glass shoes were made in hundreds of styles, shapes and colors. They were a favorite of Victorianera collectors and cluttered parlors throughout the country, especially during the early decades of the past century. One of the better guides is "Collectible Shoes of Glass," by Earlene Wheatley and published by Collector Books. Some typical prices are: Slipper by Daisy & Button, $75; Slipper with daisy design by Gillinder, $100;

and high-button boot in frosted amber, $75. Many of the more common examples sell in the $25 to $50 range. *** Q: I have a collection of about 50 VCR tapes featuring mostly science-fiction movies and oddities. I have been told that they aren't worth keeping. What is your opinion? — Steve, Fort Smith, Arkansas A: Most VCR tapes sell in the $1 to $3 range. Values depend on several factors, including condition, rarity and collectability. There are always exceptions. For example, some VCR tapes are worth several hundred dollars each, including such titles as "Evil Dead," "Savage Int r u d e r, " " B a ck for

On Friday, January 20, countless millions watched and listened in person, or worldwide on televisions and phones, to the inauguration of our 45th President, Donald John Trump, at the U.S. Capitol. It did my heart good to see a peaceful transition of power. How lucky we are to live in a free country, Republicans as well as Democrats. I'm hoping and praying that this inauguration can usher in a new beginning in America and we can begin a process of agreeing to disagree. Abraham Lincoln said of the Republicans and Democrats, "Both sides pray to the same God." He also said, "A nation divided against itself cannot stand." But I also realize there will be no nation divided as long as her people stand together. Millions and millions witnessed the inauguration of the 45th President all over the world, most praying for peace. Going back to April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath of office as the first President of this great United States. The oath was administered by Robert R. Livingston, the Chancellor of New York, on a second floor balcony of Federal Hall with a crowd assembled in the streets to witness the historic event. After taking the oath of office, George Washington proceeded to the Senate Chamber to deliver his inaugural speech. So fast forwarding to January 20, 2017 when Donald Trump took the oath, I caught myself wishing there were no sides, only different opinions, only a Celebration of Democracy! I caught myself feeling proud of my country as I do every day and have every day of my life, but also remembering this campaign started as a protest campaign. I'm sure in

the beginning Trump didn't think he would win, but as we all know, he DID! And it was a hard fought battle on both sides! So in spite of close to 70 Democrats boycotting this historical event (as every inauguration is), Donald J. Trump delivered a blistering speech. In listening to him, had I not known better, his words sounded like Bernie Sanders. Yet it was totally Trump. It was not about him. It was all about the American people, all of us! The theme was America First, and so it should be. I'm sure in the end he left a lot of egos bruised, especially in the good ol' boys and girls club, and I'm sure the Clintons and Obamas were among them. It was a speech like no other, putting many on warning. Friday, January 20, 2017 was Day 1 of the first 100 Days. After the ceremony Barack Obama and family headed to Palm Springs, California, and Donald Trump and family headed to the White House, where the President went right to work in the Oval Office. Before the evening inaugural balls, he signed the first executive order, on Obamacare. Moving on, Sunday, January 21 was the Women's March, which the liberal media totally took out of context and misled the meaning. It's a movement worldwide about human rights, not just about Donald Trump. The Women's March was and is a stand against complacency worldwide. It's a diverse group to peacefully demonstrate for women's rights, demanding that they not be denied. For many it was a multi-generation day. There were many signs in support of voting rights and against voter suppression, some support for ACA, Black Lives Matter, and Gay Rights, but what I found disheartening was when a Pro

Life group tried to join this march they were not accepted with open arms and grace. But what's important is the events of Friday and Saturday were held without loss of life. There were no terrorist attacks, thank God! But leave it to the liberal media to pick a fight right off the bat! This current fight between Trump and the media is not about crowd size, it's about dishonesty in the media. Case in point, after the inaugural ceremony, Donald Trump graciously invited the media into the Oval Office. After the fact a CNN / Times magazine correspondent reported that the new President had the Martin Luther King, Jr. bust removed from the Oval Office. The truth is the reporter didn't see it! Nothing was further from the truth, but the liberal media spun it as truth. And why in the world did the mainstream media decide they needed to compare Trump's inaugural crowd to Obama's? Were they attempting to prove that Obama was bigger and better than Trump? Or did they know they would get to Trump, so let's do it! Of course they failed to point out that the worldwide audience, including television, was larger than any former American President. The battle line is CNN, MSNBC, NBC, and ABC, and as much as it grieves me, in my opinion, the AP has now fallen into the category of a fake news or very biased network. Don't be surprised if there aren't new networks popping up soon. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Why Read the Bible Through This Year I wonder, if a survey were taken on how many Americans have read the Bible through, what would t h e p e rc e nt age b e ? Throughout history the Bible has been banned and burned and yet for centuries it has been number one on the best seller’s list. Many Bible translators and distributors have been imprisoned and burned at the stake for distributing the Bible. Why is the Bible such a dangerous book? Why should you read the Bible through this year and study its precepts? Here are 17 reasons why you should read the Bible through in 2017. THE BIBLE IS GOD’S INSPIRED WORD. “All scripture is inspired by God. (II Timothy 3:16) All scripture is God breathed. It is not a history book or a dead letter. It is

Place 8 roll-ups, seam-sides down, in each of 2 (13x9-inch) baking dishes sprayed with cooking spray; top with reserved sauce and remaining cheese. Bake 25 min. or until heated through. Makes 8 servings, 2 roll-ups each.

It collects all prescription eyewear and redistributes the glasses to those in need. • Make your own double boiler by resting an ovenproof glass bowl on top of a pot. PAWS and claws A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children.

Cold, Ice No Problem for Determined Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Hank” is 14 years old and has arthritis. I’m worried about walking him in the snow this winter. Last year, his legs and paws were too sensitive for boots, so I used to put little socks on his paws and cover them with plastic sandwich bags tied with rubber bands. That worked well, but last winter I couldn’t get them on him because his legs and paws, especially the front ones, hurt too much. I’ve tried to train him to go on training pads inside the house, and he does so occasionally. However, he is adamant about going

outside in the morning! — Lauren G., via e-mail DEAR LAUREN: I know you’ve heard me and others recommend booties for dogs going out in freezing, icy conditions, but in this case I think you should defer to your dog’s judgment. Hank really wants to go outside, and he really does not want to wear booties. I have a feeling that he is shifting his weight around and adjusting his paws when he’s in the unfamiliar little booties, and that shifting and extra movement can exacerbate his arthritis. If it is not super-cold outside (like, below zero), and Hank has clear stretches of sidewalk, he should be just fine with a short walk each morning to do his business. Try putting a doggie vest around him to keep his core temperature up, if he’ll tolerate it. Immediately after his walk, after he sits or lies

by Samantha Weaver • It was American linguist, philosopher, historian and social critic Noam Chomsky who made the following sage observation: "Students who acquire large debts putting themselves through school are unlikely to think about changing society. When you trap people in a system of debt, they can't afford the time to think." • If you were to choose a perfectly average snow-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Guess what, Lamb? You’re about to experience a new perspective on a situation you long regarded quite differently. What you learn could open more opportunities later. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bold Bovine is tempted to charge into a new venture. But it might be best to take things one step at a time, so that you know just where you are at any given point. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good time to go on that fun getaway you’ve been planning. You’ll return refreshed, ready and, yes, even eager to tackle the new challenge that awaits you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child loves to fantasize about magical happenings in the early part of the week. But the sensible Crab gets down to serious business by week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) What goes around comes around for those lucky Leos and Leonas whose acts of generosity could be repaid with opportunities to expand into new and exciting areas of interest. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your concern about your job responsibilities is commendable. But you need to take some quiet time to share with someone who has really missed being with you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Aspects favor getting out and meet-

ing new people. And as a bonus, you might find that some of your newly made friends could offer important business contacts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might take pride in wanting to do everything yourself. But now’s a good time to ask family members to help with a demanding personal situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Pay more attention to the possibilities in that workplace change. It could show the way to make that long-sought turn on your career path. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your need to succeed might overwhelm obligations to your loved ones. Ease up on that workload and into some well-deserved time with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Love rules for amorous Aquarians who can make good use of their ability to communicate feelings. Don’t be surprised if they’re reciprocated in kind. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Fishing for compliments? No doubt, you probably earned them. But it’s best to let others believe they were the ones who uncovered the treasure you really are. Among his contemporaries he was known for his decadence and eccentricity. For example, he was notorious for hosting elaborate banquets, then putting the ancient Roman equivalent of whoopee cushions on guests' seats. • Those who study such things say that a woman's

Thought for the Day: "As any honest magician knows, true magic inheres in the ordinary, the commonplace, the everyday, the mystery of the obvious.
