DONORS URGENTLY NEEDED TO INCREASE GIRL SCOUT TROOP 8713 COOKIE TABLE Girl Scout Troop 8713 RED CROSS BLOOD SUPPLY The American Red Cross urgently needs blood donors to make an appointment to give this winter so that patients can continue to receive lifesaving treatments. Michael Harper knows how critical it is to have a readily available blood supply. “I used over 300 units of blood when I was younger after an auto accident. Blood donations helped save my life,” he said. “Now, I would like to donate as much or more than I have received.” Blood donations are urgently needed now and
wthroughout the winter to maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients in need. To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All those who come to donate from Jan. 30 to Feb. 26, 2017, are eligible to receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email for making blood and platelet donation a priority this winter. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are lised below.

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/ RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Be A Valentine
Create a memory that will be cherished forever with a celebration on Valentines Day. Here is a menu for two couples, or if it's just the two of you, cut it in half. Menu: Cornish Game Hens with Brown Rice Stuffing, Peas and Mushrooms Bonne Femme, Avocado with Cherry Tomatoes, and Coeur A La Creme.
Cornish Game Hens With Brown Rice Stuffing
4 Cornish game hens (about 1 lb. each) 1/2 tsp. salt (preferably coarse) Pinch of pepper
STUFFING:
1 T. butter 2 shallots, or 1 small white onion and 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 lb. fresh mushrooms, sliced lengthwise 1/2 tsp. curry powder
1/4 tsp. curry powder 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 cup brown rice 2 T. raisins 1 cup plus 2 T. chicken broth 2 tsp. grated orange peel
TO FINISH:
2 T. butter Juice of 1/2 orange 2 T. oil 1 egg yolk 1/4 cup dry white wine or apple cider Thaw Cornish hens if frozen. Combine salt, pepper, curry and ginger. Rub all over hens to season. Prepare stuffing: Heat 1 T. butter in large skillet; stir in shallots and mushrooms and cook briefly, then stir in curry powder. Add rice and saute over medium heat about 2 min.. Stir in raisins and broth. Cover skillet and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer about 30 min., until rice is almost tender. Add grated orange peel; fluff rice. Spoon stuffing into cavities of hens, pulling a mushroom slice over the opening. Secure legs, trussing with white thread. Heat remaining butter and oil in large skillet. Add hens, one at a time, turning to coat and glaze all sides. Place glazed hens on rack in roasting pan; baste with wine. Cover loosely with foil and roast in preheated 375° oven about 30 min.. Uncover and baste with drippings and orange juice; reduce temperature to 325° and bake another 20 to 30 min., until tender and golden. Reduce temperature to 150° and hold until ready to serve. Just before serving, strain drippings into small saucepan. Beat egg yolk with a little of the hot drippings, then return to pan and heat, stirring, to thicken slightly — do not boil. Place birds on large platter. Spoon some sauce over birds, and garnish with watercress. Serve remaining sauce separately. Makes 4 servings.
Peas And Mushrooms Bonne Femme
2 T. butter 1 small white onion, finely chopped 1/4 lb. fresh mushrooms, sliced, or 1 (3 oz.) can sliced mushrooms 3 lbs. fresh small peas, shelled, or 1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen tiny peas, thawed
2 T. chicken broth or liquid from canned mushrooms Salt and white pepper to taste Broad lettuce leaf
In saucepan or skillet, heat butter and saute onion and mushrooms about 3 min., turning to glaze. Add peas, broth, salt and pepper. Cover vegetables with broad lettuce leaf, then cover pan. Steam about 4 min., shaking pan to cook evenly. Discard leaf before serving. Makes 4 servings.

From day one President Donald J. Trump has made it clear he is going to keep America safe, so he put a ban on seven countries for a limited time. Those countries are Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. Keep in mind these seven countries are the same countries pinpointed by Barack Obama and Congress, and justifiably so, in my opinion. Under the law and according to the Constitution, Trump is within his legal authority as the President to institute this ban through an executive order. But on Saturday U.S. District Judge James Robart, appointed by George W. Bush, as a "so called judge" overturned the ruling, or should I say paused it. The White House said the Justice Department would challenge the judge's ruling, and that procedure has already started. I remember Obama's statement about executive orders, "I have the power of the pen and phone." You've got to love it! Where was the outcry over Barack Obama's executive orders? Our immigration policies must be put in place. Illegals are flooding into this country in record numbers. Cross the borders of Iran illegally and you will end up in jail for 20 years; otherwise you will be shot. And keep in mind that three former Presidents have put bans on illegal immigration in recent history; they were Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. As reported in the Los Angeles Times, Obama invoked it 19 times, Clinton 12 times
and George W. Bush 6 times. I am in agreement with Donald Trump who said, "When a country is no longer able to say who can and who cannot come in and out, for reasons of safety and security — big trouble." This President is a President for all the people, and in my opinion, he has the right to respond to his critics. Yet the left is straining to create the impression that the ban was a Muslim ban. In fact, it was not. Had it been, I would have been against it! The ban was placed on unstable countries. Because of past unstable activity, it would have and should have included Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt, as well as Pakistan, a very Muslim country, proving once again by Trump's actions this was not a Muslim ban. Nor should any have been banned for the Muslim reason. Donald Trump has not once said this is a Muslim ban. These are words that came out of the mouths of Nancy Pelosi, Chuck S c hu m e r, E l i z a b e t h Wa r r e n , a n d o t h e r Democrat leaders as well as the flaming liberal media. The left's favorite words have b e come Muslim ban, racist, sexist, and classism. It's interesting I haven't heard these words from the right, who for the most part, appear to be happy with what Donald Trump has done. The only objection I have to this ban is those which were here with visas and green cards (less than 300 across the country) should
have not been held back. However, within 10 to 12 hours they were allowed in. I've waited that long in a terminal, but I'm not saying I liked it. In case some don't get it — and many don't — we are in a very dangerous place in this country, in more ways than one. Paul Ryan said of the ban, "What is important is Donald Trump's administration is taking steps to reinstate the ban legally." Unfortunately, as long as the Democratic Party has people like Nancy Pelosi and the Elizabeth Warrens — the old guard — they will continue to shoot themselves between the eyes and self destruct. And these Republican sweeps will continue across the country, sadly taking down some of our — and I do mean our — best leaders, just because they are on a Democratic ticket. Everything has become too political, even on Super Bowl Sunday. For example, the commercial from Budweiser Beer was about an immigrant. The key word is legal immigrant. Our ancestors came to America legally, and so it should be today. In closing, on a lighter note for the Super Bowl commercials, I'm buying a bottle of Mr. Clean tomorrow. Until next week. stand and experience redemption’s call. Consider these aspects of redemption. THE PROPHECY OF JOB’S REDEEMER. We hear the gospel of redemption in possibly the oldest book in the Bible, the book of Job The wealthiest man of his generation lost everything including his health. Through his suffering, Job received one of the greatest revelations of all time when he declared, “For I know that my Redeemer lives and He shall stand at last on earth, and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God.” (Job 19:2526) Job had the hope of eternal life because he had a
without spot.” (I Peter 1:1820) There are two sides to the coin of redemption here. We were redeemed “from” and redeemed “to” or “through Christ.” (Romans 3:24; 6:4; I Peter 3:18; Hebrews 9:12, 22) After my grandma Rose answered redemption’s call, she took her grandchildren to church. It was in children’s church where I was first exposed to redemption through the pastor’s wife’s story of “Tommy’s Lost Sailboat”. Tommy was sailing his toy sailboat when the string broke and the sailboat drifted away and was lost. He searched everywhere for it without success. One day he saw his sailboat sitting in the window of a store. He went

Redemption is the encompassing theme of the Bible. Jesus answered redemption’s call in His mission to the earth. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines redemption as “the act of redeeming, to recover property by discharging an obligation, to ransom, free, or recue by paying a price.” Oswald Chambers wrote that the reality of the Christian life finds its power in redemption. “Jesus Christ came to redeem the whole world and to place it perfectly whole and restored before the throne of God.” To live in freedom, you must under-

redeemer. Job prophesied of Christ who would pay the redemption price by laying his life on the cross as the supreme sacrifice for our sin. Christ indeed lives as the Resurrection and the Life. THE PRECIOUS PRICE OF REDEMPTION. Just as the Jews were enslaved by Pharaoh in Egypt and needed a deliverer, so mankind has been enslaved by sin and death and in need of a redeemer. Psalm 49:5-9 paints the picture of the precious cost of redemption. “Those who trust in their wealth and boast in the multitude of their riches, none of them can by any means redeem his brother nor give God a ransom for him – For the redemption of their souls is costly.” The New Testament reveals the precious price of redemption. “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct . . . but with the precious blood of Christ, as a lamb without blemish and

in and discovered it had a price tag on it for way more money than he had to buy it back. Tommy worked hard and sold what he had and was finally able to purchase his lost sailboat. What joy he had in his heart when he could once again take his boat home and sail it. He loved and appreciated it even more. That story explained what redemption is all about to my young mind. Jesus paid the ransom price to redeem us and it was costly. THE PRINCIPLE OF FAITH IN REDEMPTION. The apostle Paul taught us in his epistles that no amount of our works could ever free us from the law of sin and death. Only faith in Christ’s
redemption can free us. (Galatians 3:12-14) THE POWER OF REDEMPTION’S HOPE. Job declared his hope of eternal life because his redeemer lived. Jesus gave us this assurance, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” (Luke 21:28) This refers to our full redemption. An old hymn says, “Redeemed how I love to proclaim it, redeemed by the blood of the lamb.” Have you been redeemed? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

By Larry Cox Stemless Daisy Q: I have inherited a sugar shaker that has been identified as a piece of Stemless Daisy. What can you tell me about it? — Betty, Portsmouth, Virginia A: Stemless Daisy — sometimes known as Cosmos pottery — is pattern glass that was produced from roughly 1895 until 1915 by the Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company. Almost all of the pieces I have seen are made of milk glass, but there are exceptions. The reliefmolded flowers are generally on a finely crosscut background and painted in soft colors, including blue, pink and yellow. Your sugar shaker is considered rare, and depending on its condition could
be worth as much as $650. *** Q: In 1937, I received a composition and stuffed cloth doll of Mickey Mouse. It is marked "knickerbocker" and is about 12" tall and in excellent condition. A neighbor has offered me $250 for it, but I wanted to check with you first. — Arthur, Austin, TX A: I found your doll referenced in the "Official Hake's Price Guide to Character Toys" by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. According to Hake, if your doll is truly in excellent condition it could be worth as much as $1,200. *** Q: I have seven Daguerreotype pictures. They are in fairly good condition, but no cases. If any of your pictures show children with toys, men in Civil War-era uniforms, or other than studio poses, they could be worth much more. *** Q: I have a set of Heston National Finals Rodeo belt buckles issued in 1975 and 2016. The buckles are mint and have never been worn. How much are they worth? —Wade, Orton, Minnesota A: I contacted a rodeo memorabilia collector who thought your buckles would be valued in the $15 to $25 range. This was confirmed when I checked

by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American theoretical physicist Richard Feynman who made the following sage observation: "It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong." • Historians report that Alexander the Great -- best known for his conquests throughout Asia and North
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of mixed signals can create an unreliable situation in which to make decisions. Best advice: Hold off on making any commitments until you’re sure you know what’s going on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An apparently friendly offer comes with some strings attached. Be careful not to get tied into something you don’t really want. Thoroughly examine all your options before making a choice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) If you’re not careful, distractions can interrupt your best efforts. Continue to focus on what you need to do. You’ll soon have lots of time to enjoy the rewards of your dedication. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Knowledge replaces suspicion as you begin to learn more about that “act of betrayal.” On a lighter note, someone close to you might be planning a pleasant surprise. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Control your sometimes-overactive jealousy gene before you find yourself saying or doing something that you could later regret. Best advice: Stop obsessing and move on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to loosen up and do something wonderful and exciting before your more reserved nature resurfaces. A message brings news of imminent change. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Cheer up. Things begin to improve significantly by mid-February. How-
ever, you might still need help to get through the rest of this sometimesdifficult period. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Something you learned last week takes on new meaning as you begin to relate it to another situation in your life. It’s best to keep this matter to yourself for now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your energy level is climbing, and so is your self-confidence. Good for you, because you’ll need a good dollop of both to tackle an exciting challenge on the way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family issue might interrupt a career-linked project. Try to give the matter the attention it needs, but be careful not to jeopardize your workplace situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some self-doubt shows up this week, causing you to question your ability to handle a new challenge. But you know you can do it, and this is your chance to prove it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal matter requires you to be as clear and forthcoming as possible in order to avoid misunderstandings. A career move is eased with the emergence of new facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of reaching people that makes them feelgood about themselves. You would be an excellent motivational speaker. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
Africa, which helped to create one of the ancient world's largest empires before he turned 30 -- had a hard-and-fast rule for his s oldiers: no b eards. Alexander didn't want to give their enemies anything to grab onto during battle. • If you're sending a letter to Ireland, don't worry if the address you have on file is missing the postal code; in that country
Wednesday, February 8, 2017 the only addresses that use them are in the capital, Dublin. • In 2002, researchers conducted a study to determine how consumers' decisions are influenced by seemingly minor changes in appearance. They presented car-buyers with a variety of webpages; everything on the pages was the same — the vehicles presented, the information provided, prices, etc. — except for the background. One group got a green background with a pattern of pennies on it, and one group got a red background with a pattern of flames. As it turns out, the background did, indeed, influ-
ence behavior: Consumers in the green-background group spent more time looking at information about cost, while those in the red-background group spent more time looking at details about safety features. • In Ireland, to ensure good luck on a child's birthday, it was once the tradition to hold the child by the feet and bump his or her head on the floor once for each of the child's years.
