KENNY & LETTIE JOHNSON CELEBRATE 30 YEARS Kenny Johnson asked for and received Centralia Buchheit Manager John Hendrickson's help in a surprise to his wife Lettie. Thirty years ago Kenny first saw his wife while working on a ladder changing ceiling lights at Woolworth's (now the Buchheit store). In fact, Kenny claims he almost fell off the ladder when he first saw her. The surprise plan included setting up a ladder with a rose, a special card and a lighted candle for Lettie to "find." A group of friends were in on the plan and got Lettie to Buchheit's under false pretenses. Congratulations to Lettie and Kenny Johnson!

All of the above voting will be in the County Clerk’s Office only. The County Clerk’s office will be open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Except Holidays

Students from FFA chapters across Illinois attended t he 212° L e adership Conference. This conference is an activity of the National FFA Organization made possible by title sponsor Syngenta as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Hope Beckmann, Bailee Dykstra, a n d K e n z i e Gelsinger, members of the Sandoval FFA Chapter attended the event February 3-4, 2017 in Mt. Vernon, IL. 212° — the temperature at which water boils — focuses on taking students

to the boiling point of personal leadership. At 211° water is extremely hot, but just one more degree gets us to the next level. The two-day 212° Leadership Conference is focused on student development and helps FFA members become aware of all aspects of personal growth. FFA members attended sessions on mental, emotion, physical and social growth. Students leave this experience with a personal plan for self-improvement. This school year, more than 7,500 students across the nation will participate in

UNEXPECTED REUNION WITH PLAYER FROM "COACH CAVALETTO" DAYS State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem) attended the 19th Annual In du s t r y Aw a rd s & Installation of Officers for t h e Ho m e B u i l d e r s Association of Greater Southwest Illinois. The Home Builders Association (HBA) was established in 1998 when the HBA of Southwest IL merged with t h e Ho m e B u i l d e r s Association of Madison County. The Home Builders Association (HBA) is a professional organization of more than 250 builders, developers, remodeling contractors, specialty trade contractors, and associate members. In order to assist the consumer in new home purchase or home improvement decisions, the HBA provides information about builders, remodelers, developers, and affiliated companies that have agreed to abide by the HBA Code of Ethics, to use accepted professional and business practices, and to meet or exceed local, state and federal standards and regu-

lations. “When the turnaround in our economy takes off, there will be a need to build more new homes for the new workers in our state as well as a great number of remodels and upgrades to existing homes,” said Rep. Cavaletto. “I applaud the work of the Home Builders Association to set their own standards and code of ethics to build quality homes in Illinois,” Cavaletto added. While waiting to give his remarks at the 19th Annual Installation of Officers of t h e Ho m e B u i l d e r s Association, Rep. Cavaletto noticed someone staring at him from across the room. He didn't recognize the man and wasn't sure what to expect when the man approached him after he'd made his comments. "I wasn't sure what to expect when this guy came up to me and said I KNEW IT WAS YOU!, Rep. Cavaletto, described jokingly. "It was a former high school basketball player from Mascoutah

Community High School who took the final shot in a game against my team at the time, Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese. That potential winning shot missed, Mater Dei won the game, and went on to the Illinois State Tournament where we finished 4th in the state in 1974," remembers "Coach" Cavaletto. The former basketball player was Jim Heberer who now is the Residential

Loan Officer at Associated Bank in Fairview Heights. "I've always felt that playing team sports like basketball teaches young people communication and leadership skills that they will use for the rest of their lives," added "Coach" Cavaletto. "Jim is a prime example of how he uses that skill set to help people realize the American Dream of home ownership in our area," concluded Cavaletto.

MCCARTER: ILLINOIS NEEDS TO LIVE WITHIN ITS MEANS

Gregory Dalencourt Have fun with my family.

“The creativity by state government to take more money out of your pocket s eems ne ver-ending. There’s more creativity about raising taxes in Springfield than Disney. What you will see over the next several days in Springfield is elimination of some taxes and the creation and raising of other taxes. But, the bottom line

is Springfield wants to give us a government we cannot afford. The ‘Grand Bargain’ vote is for a $39 billion spending bill, only made possible from taxes out of your pocket. I will be fighting this irresponsible behavior up until the vote. I will vote ‘No.’ Lawmakers need to put their efforts into a budget plan requiring

Illinois state government to live within its means, rather than a government that decides how big the budget should be and then taxes everybody to match the spending. If Illinois has $34 billion coming in, our spending should match. The ‘Grand Bargain’ deal includes borrowing $7 billion. The supporters expect you to pay billions

of dollars more in new and higher taxes. They want to push this problem down the road, like they’ve done for years, instead of living within our means. This has to stop. Our families’ futures are too important and the jobs we have left are too important. Our desire to live and prosper here, and raise our families here, are too important.”

Cooking With Lizzie

Super Soups After you have made a few soups, you will be convinced that slow cookers were made just for that purpose. They bring out the flavors by retaining all the natural meat and vegetable juice. Some soups are special enough to serve your guests. Green Vegetable Chowder with sour cream added at the last minute is one example. Bouillabaisse is another, so enjoy the upcoming few week's columns on my favorite recipes.

Green Vegetable Chowder 6 to 8 medium leeks 2 small potatoes, peeled and diced 3 cups chicken broth or bouillon 1 (10-oz.) pkg. frozen peas, thawed 1/2 cup coarsely chopped watercress leaves

2 T. butter 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. seasoned salt 1/8 tsp. pepper 1/2 cup dairy sour cream

Trim and clean leeks; slice crosswise. In slow-cooking pot, combine leeks with potatoes, broth, peas, watercress, butter, salts, and pepper. Cover and cook on low 5 to 7 hours or until vegetables are tender. Pour 1/3 of mixture at a time into blender and whirl until smooth. Return mixture to pot. Turn control to high. Stir in sour cream; cook on high 15 to 20 minutes or until hot. Spoon into bowls; garnish with a few watercress leaves. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

I watched Meet the Press Sunday morning as usual and was disenchanted with Chuck Todd as usual. This week Bernie Sanders called President Donald Trump a pathological liar, among other things. Whether or not I like Senator Sanders is a moot point. To show that kind of disrespect is something I personally can't excuse. Had someone called Barack Obama the same, I would have felt no different! However, what really set me back was Senator Sanders said next — which was of great concern to me — that there would be spontaneous protests across the country on February 25, including in conservative areas. If it's spontaneous, how the hell would he know? Is this what you call trying to bring a divided country together? Senator Sanders, on more than one occasion, has said his goal is to pull together. That's not going to happen the way he and others are behaving! But in my opinion, there's another purpose for this total disregard of respect from the Senator and others like him. Taking a close look, I believe there is a movement surrounding the Senator and those like him, and their goal is to add fuel to the fire, alongside the liberal media, and the Washington Democratic Party, to discredit Donald Trump every day of his Presidency. Why? It's quite simple. 2018 elections are just around the corner, and don't think for a minute they haven't concerned

themselves with even more eventual losses. But as long as the leaders of the Democratic Party are people like Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Dick Durbin, and of course Pocahontas (Elizabeth Warren). In other words, the old guard. The Party will continue to lose until it doesn't exist. I would strongly recommend they began to look for new candidates that care about the American people instead of trying to stay in control just to be in control. But stepping back, to prove my point, I watched some interviews during one of the recent protests with college students. I found it disturbing that the majority of these young adults didn't have a clue why they were there and couldn't even name the seven countries the president had tried to ban or didn't know why. What the hell are these young people learning? But what I found even more disturbing is when the students informed their professors that they were skipping class, these classroom rocket scientists encouraged the actions. Now if that doesn't scare you, I don't know what to say. This is all part of the grand plan. We have six grandchildren. Four are old enough to vote, and each did. I don't know how they voted, I didn't ask. That's their business. But what I can say is that each has common sense, and if they protested something, they would know why! And that's not because of me or their grandfather, but because

they have always had parental involvement. They went to college to learn, and not to find a safety room. They don't need safety pins. Thank goodness. Now the fact remains, protests take money. I ask you to wonder who's behind these spontaneous protests? Could it be George Soros? Leaving you with this thought this week: I was raised by a staunch Democrat, my father. I was a registered Democrat for most of my adult life. What am I today? I would say an Independent, because frankly, I'm not that impressed with the Republican Party either! And as we look ahead to 2018, all parties should realize that President Trump wasn't elected by the Republican Party alone, but by many of today's Independent voters (the fastest growing voting block in the nation). Many of these people are former Republican and Democrat voters who have grown tired of the gridlock of Washington and the chess game our Congress is playing with our country, because of their self interests and reelection efforts, rather than the interest of working together to improve our great nation. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. • On Feb. 14, 278 A.D., Valentine, a priest in Rome, is executed for defying Emperor Claudius II and performing marriages in secret. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join his army because of their attachment to their families, and banned all marriages. Today, we celebrate Feb. 14 as Valentine's Day. • On Feb. 13, 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Galileo remained under house arrest until his death in 1642.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Taking Your Stand Jesus identified the enemy of your soul, “The thief cometh not but to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) Paul charges us to “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil . . . and having done all to stand.” (Ephesians 6:13-14) Four times in this passage, Paul tells us to stand. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “stand” with such terms as, “to take or be at rest in an upright position, to remain stationary or unchanged, to be steadfast, to act in resistance, endure.” In writing to the church in Philippi, Paul uses the term again, “ Therefore, my beloved, and longed for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.” (Philippians 4:1) Paul tells us that we are at war, but our weapons are spiritual, not of the flesh. Identify these areas of taking a militant stand. STAND FAST IN YOUR HEAVENLY CITIZENSHIP. “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20) Paul, with tears in his eyes, said, “many walk

as enemies of the cross of Christ.” (Philippians 3:17-20) Like ancient Cain, who slew his brother Able, they lived for the things of the earth. Stand fast as a citizen of heaven. You have the hope of eternal life and a new glorious body awaiting you. Stand fast in liberty. (Galatians 5:1) STAND FAST IN UNITY. “I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind.” (Philippians 4:2-3) A united front is a force to be reckoned with. Harmony is the atmosphere of the Holy Spirit. But Christian unity comes “in the Lord.” We are “one in the Lord.” STAND FAST IN THE JOY OF THE LORD. “Rejoice in the Lord always . . . rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4) Don’t allow people or circumstances to steal your joy. Stand and rejoice in the Lord. If you don’t know what else to do — praise and worship.

STAND FAST IN LOVE. Love is the greatest force in the world because, “God is love.” Paul admonishes us to steadfastly display this fruit of love, “Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.” (Philippians 4:5) Martin Luther King said, “Let no man pull you low enough to hate him.” The love chapter tells us, “Love never fails.” (I Corinthians 13:4-8) Jesus the embodiment of love prayed for those who crucified him, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” S TA N D FA S T I N PRAYER. Prayer dissipates anxiety and worry. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer . . . let your requests be known to God.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Stand and resist the devil in prayer. “Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7) Paul reminds us that we are in a spiritual battle against the forces of Satan. We are to put on all the armor of God. “And having done all to stand . . . praying always with all prayer . . . in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 6:13, 17-18) In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught us to take a militant stand against the enemy when we pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew

6:9-10) To pray forcefully brings heaven’s power to earth. There would be more victories on earth if believers would take a more militant stand in prayer. (Matthew 11:12) Are you taking your stand on God’s Holy Word? An old hymn reminds us of our militant stand against the dark forces of evil. “Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus, going on before; Christ, the royal master, leads against the foe; Forward into battle, see His banners go!” We have His Word, “Yet in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Cat Gone Missing? Here's What to Do DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My tomcat, "Morris," slipped out the front door a couple of days ago when my visiting aunt and uncle were chatting with other relatives in the doorway. He hasn't been back yet. I searched the yard and neighborhood for him without any luck. What else can I do? My uncle keeps saying that he'll just come back on his own after he's done "doing what tomcats do." Morris is neutered, so that doesn't make sense. What do you think? — Karen T., via email DEAR KAREN: Keep searching for Morris, and don't listen to your uncle,

who is parroting an old observation that dates back to when cats were generally outdoor pets or working mousers. Morris sounds like an indoor cat and could be in trouble if he's unfamiliar with the outdoors. Is he a regular escape artist, or is this his first time getting out? Here are a few things to do: • Contact nearby animal shelters. Describe Morris' identifying features, such as color or stripes or any fur markings. Do this as quickly as possible, because many shelters euthanize strays after a set number of days have passed. • Contact your veterinarian and any nearby vets to find out if Morris was brought in. If he is wearing a collar and ID tag, a kind stranger may bring him there. • Search nearby woods and wild areas, calling Morris by name. • Place a dish of cat food

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel that you need to prove how much you can do. But be careful not to take on more than you can handle, or you risk being bogged down. An Aries has a message for you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Financially it could be a little tight for a while. So resist the urge to splurge on things you don’t really need. There will be time enough to indulge yourself when the money squeeze eases later this month. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You demand trust from others. But someone is creating a situation that could put your own trustworthiness in question. Be sure to keep all lines of communication open. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A problem delays the recognition that

you hoped to receive for your hard work. But all will soon be resolved. Remember to make patience your watchword this week. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Those wonderful ideas could expand your workplace prospects and ultimately lead you on a new career path. Your personal life also opens up new vistas. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) So much seems to be swirling around you these days that you might find it hard to focus on priorities. Best advice: Take things one at a time, and you’ll get through them all. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Work out situations with what you have, and avoid the temptation to create complications where they don’t exist. This applies both at home and in the workplace. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Keep your keen senses open to possible changes in personal and/or professional situations. Knowing what might lie ahead gives you an edge on how to handle it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Personal pressures at work could create a problem with your performance. Best advice: Focus on the job ahead of you. If necessary, you can deal with the other issue later. BORN THIS WEEK: Like your fellow Aquarian Abraham Lincoln, you have a way of handling the most difficult situations with grace and conviction.. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

supposed to yell "Down!" to avoid getting hit by other players. • If you're like one-third of American vacationers, you spend at least some time cleaning your holiday lodgings upon arrival. • In many Mediterranean countries, a typical breakfast consists of some combination of the following: tomatoes, olives, cheese, bread and hard-boiled

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 eggs. • The Guinness Book of World Records (now known simply as Guinness World Records) is so named because in 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of the Guinness Breweries, wanted to settle an argument over whether the golden plover or the red grouse was the fastest game bird in Europe. Unable to find the answer in reference books, Beaver realized that there must be many such questions debated in pubs, but no reference book to settle them. Another Guinness employee recommended professional factfinders (and twin brothers) Norris and Ross McWhirter

to compile such a book. The first edition was printed in 1954, and all 1,000 copies were given away. • It was a New Yorker named William Shepherd who patented the first liquid soap. The recipe? One pound of soap, 100 pounds of ammonia solution and enough water for the mixture to reach the consistency of molasses. Thought for the Day: "I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually." — James Baldwin © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
