In the News: • Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Hillar y and the New Resistance Party • New DNC Heads • Cabinet Confirmation Slowdown • 2018 Senate Races • Governors Go to Washington • Trump's Address to Congress • The "Disgustingly Fake" Media P r e s i d e nt D o n a l d Trump and his old friend Chuck Schumer (D-NY) were getting along too well after the inauguration. For a week or so, they seemed to be working together to get Trump's cabinet selected. Hope was in the air that maybe with Trump's democratic background and his friendship with Schumer, just maybe Congress and the President could work together and solve some problems. You know, get the job done, like all grass roots Americans want Washington to do, and quit playing politics. Well, the Democratic National C ommittee (DNC) and the Clintons and Ob amas got to Schumer and reminded him he couldn't play with Republicans, not even Trumpians. And so the resistance movement has begun, and Schumer and Hillary Clinton, with her video to the DNC, are preaching resist, resist and persist (translation: Don't get anything done, cause Trump will get the credit). And now that Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Donna Brazile are no longer heading up the DNC, they'll have more time to resist. And new chair and vice chair, Tom Perez and Keith Ellison, respectively, hope their partnership will bring the working Democrats back to the Party. They still don't get why they lost! So they will follow the resistance movement... and get nothing done. Note: I just checked the moveon.org website and the top story is Resistance Recess, as lawmakers returned home for their first recess. So, I've decided to "move

on" to the next topic: Cabinet Confirmation Slowdown. By now, President Trump (Mr. Businessman) is probably getting impatient with Congress (both Republicans and Democrats) for their slow moving process in the confirmation. Hey, he likes setting records. But not the slowest ever (resist, resist) cabinet selection in history. Only 9 of 15 cabinet secretaries, confirmed in 39 days. Let's look at the recent past of first term Presidents. Obama — 7 cabinet level officials on Inauguration Day, Secretary of State Clinton confirmed the next day. Complete cabinet in 35 days, despite having to nominate 3 different commerce secretaries. George W. Bush — Full cabinet in 2 weeks. Bill Clinton — Entirely in place the day after the Inauguration, except for 1. George H.W. Bush — 10 of 14 cabinet secretaries in first month. Ronald Reagan — full cabinet in 2 weeks. Jimmy Carter — Full cabinet in 1 week Let's move on to the 2018 elections. With the continuing huge gains since 2010 by the Republican Party, beginning with the Tea Party, taking back the presidency, both Houses of Congress, currently 33 Republican governors and thousands more in the state legislatures, the big prize could be the 2018 Senate races. So here's a breakdown. By the numbers 2018 Senate races: 23 Democrat Seats: 18 running for reelection; 5 may seek reelection. 9 Republican Seats: 5 running for reelection; 4 may seek reelection 2 Independents that caucus with Democrats: Bernie Sanders,Vermont; Angus King, Maine. 10 Democratic Senate Seats that could flip: Bill Nelson, Florida; Joe Donnelly, Indiana; Claire McCaskill, Missouri; Jon Tester, Montana; Heidi Heitkamp, North Dakota; Sherrod Brown, Ohio; Bob Casey, Jr., Pennsylvania; Jo e Ma n c h i n , We s t

Virginia; Tammy Baldwin, Wisconsin; and Debbie Stabenow, Michigan. Be watching this week as the governors come to Washington to see what bacon they can take back home with them. And when you read this, President Trump has probably released some budget proposals and has delivered his Tuesday night address to Congress. Hopefully in his speech, besides his vision for America, he needs to get specific with the first 100 Day economic plans they are creating. Just anything so the media can't say it's all general information and a wish list. And speaking of the media, many outlets once again misquoted Trump on purpose. His comment was, "Fake news media is the enemy of the American people." But the media that's always out to get him quoted, "The news media is the enemy of the American people." So leaving out the first word, "fake," covers their mission to discredit Trump. And it will be repeated incorrectly enough times until the public thinks it's true. Disgusting! And on a final note, I'm thoroughly disgusted with Chuck Todd of Meet the Press. Whether it's about more leaks in the Administration (of course, leaks from holdovers from the previous administration, which is never mentioned), or infighting among Trump's camp, or Chuck Todd spending half the news show on Russian involvement in America. He smugly spends the hour on negativity, and will not cover any positive news from this administration. He's so blatant, that I'm sure Tim Russert and all his professional predecessors from Meet the Press, are rolling over in their graves. Until next week. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The adventurous Aries won’t be disappointed with taking on a new challenge, despite some initial misgivings. Look for this move to open other opportunities down the line. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Let that beautiful Bovine smile not only put you at ease, but also show that you’re ready, willing and more than able to confound the naysayers around you. A new admirer has important news. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful how you handle a relationship that you’re hoping to save. You already have the facts on your side. Avoid weakening your position by embellishing it with unnecessary dramatics. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking definitive stands isn’t easy for the often-wavering Moon Child. But you not only need to stay with your decision, but also reassure others it was the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As a proud Lion, you’re right to be upset about those who might be lying about you to others. But the best revenge is proving them wrong by succeeding at what you set out to do. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a “promising” project. Look for the facts behind the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A Taurus offers comfort and advice as

you deal with an upsetting event. Use this as a learning experience that will help you avoid similar problems in the future. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it’s well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to make new friends as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New ventures continue to be favored. And with your self-confidence rising all the time, you’ll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time for the usually “serious-minded” Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary. But don’t let yourself be talked into changing your decisions. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for bringing people together. You would make a fine judge or counselor. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

BACK TO BASICS: GREEN LAWN CARE

Cooking With Lizzie

Sharin' O' The Green (Part 1) Wow, where did January and February go! March 17, St. Patrick's Day, is just around the corner. With the luck of the Irish, everyone will enjoy the sharin' o' the green! So over the next two weeks, you will find recipes for a complete Irish dinner for four, with everything from Glazed Corned Beef to Irish Coffee. The menu includes Glazed Corned Beef, Parsleyed New Potatoes, Killarney Coleslaw, Irish Soda Bread, Shamrock Pie and Irish Coffee.

Glazed Corned Beef 3 pounds corned beef 1 bay leaf 1/4 cup apple juice 2 teaspoons prepared mustard

1 clove garlic 4 peppercorns 1/3 cup brown sugar

Did you know you can have a luscious green lawn while being ‘green’? Grass in the form of lawns is the third largest crop in Illinois covering 63,000 square miles. Maintaining all that grass with high volume of fertilizers and pesticides can be harmful to the environment. With a few simple changes to your routine will produce the same results in a green ‘earth friendly’ manor.

University of Illinois Extension program Green Lawn Care will highlight sustainable practices for the home lawnscape on March 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Case-Halstead Library. What we put on our land ends up in our water. Learn how to apply fertilizers to your lawn in the proper amount to avoid excess runoff that can lead to contaminating our water supply locally and

downstream. Additional cultural practices will also be discussed to produce a green healthy lawn that will make your neighbors envious. Practices learned can also be applied to vegetable gardens and landscaping. There is no charge for this program but registration is required. Call 618-526-4551 or https://web.extension.illinois.edu/registration/?Regist rationID=16196

Are you beginning to feel as worn out as your old mattress?

FINAL DAYS!

We need to get to Steffy’s this weekend!

Place corned beef in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Add garlic, bay leaf and peppercorns. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer about 3 hours or until tender. Remove corned beef from liquid and place fat side up on a rack in a roasting pan. Score the fat in a diamond pattern. Prepare the glaze by combining apple juice, brown sugar and mustard in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until well-blended and slightly thickened. Pour glaze over meat. Roast in a pre-heated 400° oven 30 minutes, basting every 10 minutes to glaze. 4 to 6 servings (with leftovers). Note: The leftovers are great for sandwiches!

Parsleyed New Potatoes 1½ pounds new potatoes 1/2 cup butter

1/2 tsp. salt 2 T. chopped parsley

Scrub potatoes to remove any loose skin. Pare a 1/2 inch strip around the center of each potato to prevent splitting. In a saucepan, bring about 2 inches water to a boil about 20 minutes or until tender. Uncover and quickly boil off remaining water, shaking the pan to dry potatoes. Add butter, in pieces, and parsley, turning potatoes to coat evenly. Makes 4 servings.

Killarney Coleslaw 3 cups shredded cabbage 2 T. grated onion 1/4 tsp. pepper 1 T. sugar 1 T. lemon juice 1 tsp. chopped chives

1/2 green pepper, shredded 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. celery seeds 3/4 cup mayonnaise 2 T. chopped fresh parsley

Combine cabbage, green pepper, onion, salt, pepper, celery seeds and sugar. Whirl remaining ingredients in a blender (or whip with a fork). Combine and toss well. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes 4 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia, IL 62801 or email to: info@ theshoppersweekly.com, (Subject - ATTN: Lizzie) Also, if you have a household problem, like a stubborn stain or a kitchen conundrum, drop us a line, our readers just might have your solution! I'm also interested in your general decorating or household tips. Send your message in a bottle and we might just publish it and enlighten our readers! Until next week, Au Revoir! —Elizabeth Fenton

CROSSROADS COMMUNITY HOSPITAL DONATES SUPPLIES TO HAITI Crossroads Community Hospital donated over $5,000 worth of medical supplies and medications to help the people of Haiti, which will be delivered by Dr. Bradley Drake of Mt. Vernon Chiropractic Clinic on March 2, 2017. Dr. Gregory Dalencourt, General Surgeon at Crossroads, is

working with Dr. Drake to ensure delivery of the donated supplies to Haiti. Both physicians share a passion for this project. Dr. Drake has traveled to several foreign countries delivering necessar y medical supplies to communities in need, while Dr. Dalencourt and his wife are originally from

Haiti and have seen firsthand what is needed in the community. “The people of Haiti are not able to receive the same type of medical care we receive in the United States. When the earthquake hit, it wiped out buildings and infrastructure. They are still rebuilding from that, and then Hurricane Matthew happened last year,” said Dr. Dalencourt. Haiti has been devastated by deadly natural disasters in recent years. In 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 killed over 40,000 people. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew left more than 35,000 people homeless and killed 1,300. “We choose the charities where we feel we can make the most impact. When the opportunity

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Moving Mountains I have a friend who spent most of his life moving houses. Can you imagine a gigantic house moving down the road to an entirely new location? Jesus spoke of a possibility that is even more mind boggling - moving mountains. Not by man’s ingenuity and skill, but by speaking to them. The disciples tried to cast a demon out of a tormented boy, but could not. When Jesus came, he brought deliverance and healing to the boy. The disciples asked Jesus why they were not able to do so. Jesus said, “Because of your unbelief.” Then Jesus gave an unexpected revelation, “For assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20-21) Do you have any mountains in your way? Jesus taught that the difference maker is faith. Activate these ingredients for mountain moving faith. POTENTIAL OF

1. Is the book of 3 Thessalonians in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. Who went to the city gate every morning to hold a court of justice trying to win people from David? Nain, Rehoboam, Absalom, Felix 3. Where did the first

FAITH. Jesus said, “If you have faith as a must ard s e e d.” A mustard seed is one of the smallest of seeds, yet, when planted, produces a large bush. It’s not how big your faith is, but what you do with the faith you have. The disciples once asked Jesus to increase their faith. (Luke 17:5-6) He told them if they had faith the size of a mustard seed, “You can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up . . . and be planted in the sea and it would obey you.’” See the potential in a mustard seed of faith. PROCLAMATION OF FAITH. Jesus said, “You shall say to this mountain.” Plant your seed by commanding your mountain to move in Jesus name. There is power in His name. (Mark 16:15-18; Acts 3:16; John 14:13-14) The words we speak with our mouth are

powerful. (Proverbs 18:21) The year 2017 has some incredible things in store for you. The number 17 is one of completeness. The 17th letter of the Hebrew alphabet means “mouth”. Plant your seed of faith by proclaiming your mountain to be moved in Jesus name. PROPHESY IN FAITH. Ezekiel was given a vision of a valley of dry bones. “God asked him, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’” He was commanded to prophesy to the dry bones. “Dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord! . . . Surely I will cause breath to enter into you and you shall live.” (Ezekiel 37:1-14) The dry bones represented Israel. When Ezekiel prophesied, the Spirit of God brought them to life again. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and prophesy to your mountain in faith. “Hear the Word of the Lord.” P R AY E R A N D FASTING FORTIFY FAITH. When the disciples asked why they could not bring deliverance to the demon harassed boy, Jesus said

because of their unbelief. But he added, “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21) The spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting keeps one in the atmosphere of God’s presence. Faith and power are fortified in the soil of prayer and fasting, and it becomes a hot bed of faith and miracles. Do you have mountains in your way? An old song says, “Got any rivers you think are uncrossable, got any mountains you cannot tunnel through? God specializes in things thought impossible. He can do what no other can do.” Your faith can move mountains. Plant the seed by speaking to your mountain. Speak forth the greatest seed. “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

HOW TO TREAT MUSCLE CRAMPS AND PREVENT THEIR RECCURRENCE Rare is the athlete who has not had the misfortune of suffering a muscle cramp. Muscle cramps can range from the relatively minor nuisances that can be worked out in a matter of minutes to the more severe cramps that can sideline athletes for an indeterminate period of time. According to the U.S. Nat i ona l L ibr ar y of Medicine, muscle cramps are often the byproduct of

an overused or injured muscle. When a muscle cramps, that muscle is involuntarily contracting, and that contraction can be very painful. Because athletes tend to repeat their motions when performing exercises, it’s not uncommon for athletes to cramp up from time to time. But even men and women who live sedentary lifestyles can suffer from muscle cramps, which the NLM notes could be trig-

gered by alcoholism, hypothyroidism or kidney failure. Women may suffer muscle cramps when they are pregnant or menstruating. Certain medications may also cause muscle cramps. Men and women concerned about muscle cramps should read the potential side effects of their medications carefully or speak directly with their physicians before taking any medicines that

may cause muscle cramps. The online medical resource WebMD notes that medications such as Lasix, a diuretic used to remove fluid from the body, and Crestor, a statin prescribed to adults with high cholesterol, can cause muscle cramps. While dehydration and electrolyte depletion has long been linked to exercise-associated muscle cramps, researchers have been questioning, if not

disputing, that link for many years. A 2008 study from South African researchers published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine did not support a link between exercise-associated muscle cramps and dehydration or electrolyte depletion. Muscle cramps tend to be painful and can occur in the legs, hands, arms, or abdomen or along the rib cage. When cramps occur below the waist, such as in the calf muscle, it can be difficult to stand up. Treating Muscle Cramps Muscle cramps require immediate treatment so sufferers can alleviate the pain and/or discomfort cramps can cause. Massaging the cramped muscle or applying ice or heat can alleviate the cramp and its associated pain. Calf or hamstring cramps may be alleviated by putting weight on the affected leg and bending the knee slightly. Such cramps may also be treated by sitting or lying down with the affected leg straight out and pulling the foot toward the head. To treat quadriceps cramps (those that occur in the front of the thigh), hold

Preventing Future Cramps One of the most effective ways to prevent future cramps is to listen to your body when it’s sending you signals that it is fatigued. Overused muscles are vulnerable to cramps, so remember to include rest in your exercise regimen so muscles have time to recover. If your body feels overtaxed or fatigued before or during a workout, skip the workout or stop it immediately to reduce your risk of cramps or injury. Deficiencies in certain vitamins can directly or indirectly lead to muscle cramps. While the reasons behind the link between thiamine, pantothenic acid and pyridoxine deficiencies and muscle cramps is unknown, speak with your physician about how to include these vitamins in your diet if you have been exp er iencing mus cle cramps. Cramps can be painful and derail athletes. Learning to prevent cramps can protect athletes and ensure they are not sidelined from their favorite activities.
