Is Brady the Best Ever? Roger That If you've done a little studying in your life, you know that there are abstract concepts you can ponder (think Descartes) and cold, hard facts (I was told there wou ld b e no mat h, however). The scientific method teaches us that we learn by observing. So, by any measure, if you watched Super Bowl 51, you witnessed something that can only be called irrefutable in the truest, most classic form of the word: Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. is the greatest quarterback to ever play the game of football, in any era, in any stadium, in any game, for any team, ever. I don't know what it is about the New England Patriots that inspires every coach not named Tom Coughlin to shave hundreds of IQ points off their cerebrum in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. This bewildering tendency to just do the stupidest things imaginable with the Patriots on the ropes is almost as awe-inspiring as Brady's leveling up in response each time. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois robotics team, OOPS! Robotics, won the Connect Award and was a finalist for the Motivate Award at the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) regional qualifying tournament at Decatur Hope Academy on Feb. 11. The team also advanced to the FTC Illinois State tournament, which will be held Feb. 24-25 at Elgin Community College in Elgin. FTC is designed for students in grades 7-12 to compete head to head, in an alliance format against other teams. Teams design, build and program their robot using a variety of programming languages and sound engineering principles, then plan strategies for competition. Awards are given for competitive performance as well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments. The Connect Award is presented to the team that most connects with their local STEM community. To win, a team must submit an engineering notebook with

a strategic plan which highlights the team's goals and the steps they will take to reach those goals. The team must also provide clear examples of the connections they have been developing within engineering, science and technology communities. The Motivate Award is given to the team that best exemplifies the essence of FTC competition through team building, team spirit and enthusiasm. The team must demonstrate respect and gracious professionalism throughout the tournament and be able to articulate the individual contributions of each team member. In addition to their achie vements at the Decatur regional, OOPS! also qualified for the Missouri State Tournament earlier this season. That tournament will be held March 4 at Missouri S&T University in Rolla. GSSI’s Oops! Robotics team is coached by Kristi Smith and Mary Buchanan of O'Fallon and consists of middle and high school girls from Belleville,

Granite City and O'Fallon. BACK TO BASICS: GREEN LAWN CARE Did you know you can have a luscious green lawn while being ‘green’? Grass in the form of lawns is the third largest crop in Illinois covering 63,000 square miles. Maintaining all that grass with high volume of fertilizers and pesticides can be harmful to the environment. With a few simple changes to your routine will produce the same results in a green ‘earth friendly’ manor.

University of Illinois Extension program Green Lawn Care will highlight sustainable practices for the home lawnscape on March 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Case-Halstead Library. What we put on our land ends up in our water. Learn how to apply fertilizers to your lawn in the proper amount to avoid excess runoff that can lead to contaminating our water supply locally and

downstream. Additional cultural practices will also be discussed to produce a green healthy lawn that will make your neighbors envious. Practices learned can also be applied to vegetable gardens and landscaping. There is no charge for this program but registration is required. MCMACKIN ARMORY PLAQUE PRESENTATION NATIONAL GIRL SCOUT COOKIE WEEKENDS

The Salem Historical Commission received from Ellen McMackin Spencer, daughter of the late Salem Mayor, Charles L. “Charlie” McMackin II, the bronze dedication plaque from 1985 when the National Guard Armory was saved from being closed down at that time. It was through the efforts of then-mayor McMackin that the Armory remained open. “We are very happy to receive this McMackin Plaque and will be discussing the best way to add it to the base of the new National Guard Armory Eagle monument,” said Jerry Nix, chairman of the Historical Commission. When the Illinois National Guard Armory was slated for demolition last year, the National Guard Commander at the time, removed the McMackin Plaque and sent it to Ellen McMackin Spencer in Florida where she was living at the time. The plaque made its way back to St. Louis to a grandson, John Wilson, who now serves in the National Guard. With the help of Councilman Nick Farley, the McMackin Plaque was presented last night to t he Sa lem Histor ic a l Commission with the hope that it be incorporated with the new Armory Eagle display at the East lawn Cemetery. "I think it's important to preserve history. And what better way than to preserve the legacy of the armory and Mr. McMakin than overlooking the underpass he fought for on a memorial eagle from the Salem armory that he also fought for,” said Councilman Nick Farley.

The McMackin Family was represented by daughter, Ellen McMackin Spencer and her husband, Jerry Spencer, of Glen Carbon, and a niece, Chonita (McMackin) Smith of Salem. The family shared several stories about Mayor McMackin and his constant work to promote the military and Salem. One story was about Charlie McMackin being roommates while at Western Military Academy with both Paul Tibbets (the pilot of the Enola Gay, who dropped the atomic bomb during WWII) and Edward O'Hare (the U.S. Navy's first flying ace and Medal of Honor recipient in World War II and the name-

sake of O’Hare International Airport in Chicago). Another one of the favorite stories was about when Charlie McMackin went to Washington, D.C. to meet with then-Senator Paul Simon to make the case to keep the Salem Armory open but Sen. Simon missed the meeting. As fate would have it, when Mayor McMackin got on the plane to come home to Salem, there in first class was Senator Simon and an empty seat next to him. Needless to say, Mayor McMackin spent the next few hours making his case and by the end of the flight, the Armory was off the closing list, that time.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) joined other Girl Scout councils across the country February 24-26 to participate in National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend 2017, celebrating all the fun, learning, and excitement Girl Scouts have experienced while selling cookies for 100 years. To celebrate, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois kicked off its spring Girl Scout Cookie Booth Weekends. During Cookie Booth Weekends, troops across southern Illinois set up shop at local venues including shopping centers, gas stations, places of worship and at community events. Girls work together as a team to sell cookies directly to customers, while developing their abilities in goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Additional council-wide Cookie Booth Weekends will be held March 4-6 and March 10-12. Area troops may continue to hold cookie booths through the end of spring. Find a local Girl scout cookie booth by visiting www.girlscoutcookies. org or using the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, free for iOS or Android phones or mobile devices. In addition to cookie booths, customers can order Girl Scout Cookies online through March 19 using Girl Scouts’ safe, interactive Digital Cookie platform. merce. Girls are able customize their personal sales website and then use e-mail to invite friends and family to order cookies from the comfort of their home. Customers can choose to have cookies delivered to them or to purchase cookies to send to American military members. When a girl participates in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, she learns essential life skills, her confidence soars and her leadership skills develop in powerful everyday ways. Every sale is one more opportunity for her to lead, speak up and discover her true potential. Funds raised by the Girl Scout Cookie Program power new adventures and enriching activities such as troop travel, summer camp and community service projects. In addition, proceeds from the program help GSSI recruit and train adult volunteers, deliver quality programs, maintain camp properties and provide financial assistance so Girl Scouting is available to all girls. The Girl Scout Mission

is: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. CENTRALIA HAS NEW CHIEF OF POLICE Centralia City Manager Dan Ramey announced that Lt. Brian Atchison has been appointed Centraliaʼs new Chief of Police. Lt. Atchison had assumed the role as Acting Chief of Police since October 1, 2016 when Chief Doug Krutsinger retired. Chief Atchison, 50, has 27 years of experience as an officer with the Centralia Police Department. Ramey stated that it is ironic that Ramey was on the 3 panel Police Commission who hired Brian in 1990 as a patrolman. Prior to his appointment as Police Chief, Lt. Atchison served in the positions of patrolman, sergeant, and lieutenant, where he has been Commander of Administration since 2002. His duties have included su-

pervising Centralia Dispatch Center, FOIA Officer, administered Centraliaʼs public safety 911 PSAP system, supervised field duties of personnel, responded to police calls, member of the High Risk Team, and field training and command officer. He is current on all FEMA training requirements for command officers. Ramey said “Chief Atchison has years of experience as an officer and a leader that will allow him to understand and implement changes to the challenges and opportunities that Centralia faces.” His combination of professional experience, respect from the community and his officers, and his determination to work as part of a “team” makes him the right person to lead our police

force according to Ramey. Centralia Mayor Ashby and the Centralia City Council support the appointment of Chief Atchison and look forward to a continued pro-active police department to better serve the citizens of Centralia. Chief Atchison will be sworn in as Chief of Police this Monday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the City Council meeting. Chief Atchison is married to Angie and has 2 children, Zach and Bryce. Ramey indicated he would immediately approve Chief Atchisonʼs request authorizing the Police Commission to hire an additional police officer as soon as possible. Please contact the Office of the City Manager with any questions at 618-533-7622.

Sharin' O' The Green (Part 1) Wow, where did January and February go! March 17, St. Patrick's Day, is just around the corner. With the luck of the Irish, everyone will enjoy the sharin' o' the green! So over the next two weeks, you will find recipes for a complete Irish dinner for four, with everything from Glazed Corned Beef to Irish Coffee. The menu includes Glazed Corned Beef, Parsleyed New Potatoes, Killarney Coleslaw, Irish Soda Bread, Shamrock Pie and Irish Coffee.

Glazed Corned Beef 3 pounds corned beef 1 bay leaf 1/4 cup apple juice 2 teaspoons prepared mustard

1 clove garlic 4 peppercorns 1/3 cup brown sugar

Place corned beef in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Add garlic, bay leaf and peppercorns. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer about 3 hours or until tender. Remove corned beef from liquid and place fat side up on a rack in a roasting pan. Score the fat in a diamond pattern. Prepare the glaze by combining apple juice, brown sugar and mustard in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until well-blended and slightly thickened. Pour glaze over meat. Roast in a pre-heated 400° oven 30 minutes, basting every 10 minutes to glaze. 4 to 6 servings (with leftovers). Note: The leftovers are great for sandwiches!

Parsleyed New Potatoes 1½ pounds new potatoes 1/2 cup butter

1/2 tsp. salt 2 T. chopped parsley

Scrub potatoes to remove any loose skin. Pare a 1/2 inch strip around the center of each potato to prevent splitting. In a saucepan, bring about 2 inches water to a boil about 20 minutes or until tender. Uncover and quickly boil off remaining water, shaking the pan to dry potatoes. Add butter, in pieces, and parsley, turning potatoes to coat evenly. Makes 4 servings.

Killarney Coleslaw 3 cups shredded cabbage 2 T. grated onion 1/4 tsp. pepper 1 T. sugar 1 T. lemon juice 1 tsp. chopped chives

1/2 green pepper, shredded 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. celery seeds 3/4 cup mayonnaise 2 T. chopped fresh parsley

Combine cabbage, green pepper, onion, salt, pepper, celery seeds and sugar. Whirl remaining ingredients in a blender (or whip with a fork). Combine and toss well. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes 4 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. For a week or so, they seemed to be working together to get Trump's cabinet selected. Hope was in the air that maybe with Trump's democratic background and his friendship with Schumer, just maybe Congress and the President could work together and solve some problems. You know, get the job done, like all grass roots Americans want Washington to do, and quit playing politics. Well, the Democratic National C ommittee (DNC) and the Clintons and Obamas got to Schumer and reminded him he couldn't play with Republicans, not even Trumpians. And so the resistance movement has begun, and Schumer and Hillary Clinton, with her video to the DNC, are preaching resist, resist and persist (translation: Don't get anything done, cause Trump will get the credit). And now that Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Donna Brazile are no longer heading up the DNC, they'll have more time to resist. And new chair and vice chair, Tom Perez and Keith Ellison, respectively, hope their partnership will bring the working Democrats back to the Party. They still don't get why they lost! So they will follow the resistance movement... and get nothing done. Note: I just checked the moveon.org website and the top story is Resistance Recess, as lawmakers returned home for their first recess. So, I've decided to "move

on" to the next topic: Cabinet Confirmation Slowdown. By now, President Trump (Mr. Businessman) is probably getting impatient with Congress (both Republicans and Democrats) for their slow moving process in the confirmation. Hey, he likes setting records. But not the slowest ever (resist, resist) cabinet selection in history. Only 9 of 15 cabinet secretaries, confirmed in 39 days. Let's look at the recent past of first term Presidents. Obama — 7 cabinet level officials on Inauguration Day, Secretary of State Clinton confirmed the next day. Complete cabinet in 35 days, despite having to nominate 3 different commerce secretaries. George W. Bush — Full cabinet in 2 weeks. Bill Clinton — Entirely in place the day after the Inauguration, except for 1. George H.W. Bush — 10 of 14 cabinet secretaries in first month. Ronald Reagan — full cabinet in 2 weeks. Jimmy Carter — Full cabinet in 1 week Let's move on to the 2018 elections. With the continuing huge gains since 2010 by the Republican Party, beginning with the Tea Party, taking back the presidency, both Houses of Congress, currently 33 Republican governors and thousands more in the state legislatures, the big prize could be the 2018 Senate races. So here's a breakdown. By the numbers 2018 Senate races: 23 Democrat Seats: 18 running for reelection; 5 may seek reelection. 9 Republican Seats: 5 running for reelection; 4 may seek reelection 2 Independents that caucus with Democrats: Bernie Sanders,Vermont; Angus King, Maine. 10 Democratic Senate Seats that could flip: Bill Nelson, Florida; Joe Donnelly, Indiana; Claire McCaskill, Missouri; Jon Tester, Montana; Heidi Heitkamp, North Dakota; Sherrod Brown, Ohio; Bob Casey, Jr., Pennsylvania; Jo e Ma n c h i n , We s t

Virginia; Tammy Baldwin, Wisconsin; and Debbie Stabenow, Michigan. Be watching this week as the governors come to Washington to see what bacon they can take back home with them. And when you read this, President Trump has probably released some budget proposals and has delivered his Tuesday night address to Congress. Hopefully in his speech, besides his vision for America, he needs to get specific with the first 100 Day economic plans they are creating. Just anything so the media can't say it's all general information and a wish list. And speaking of the media, many outlets once again misquoted Trump on purpose. His comment was, "Fake news media is the enemy of the American people." But the media that's always out to get him quoted, "The news media is the enemy of the American people." So leaving out the first word, "fake," covers their mission to discredit Trump. And it will be repeated incorrectly enough times until the public thinks it's true. Disgusting! And on a final note, I'm thoroughly disgusted with Chuck Todd of Meet the Press. Whether it's about more leaks in the Administration (of course, leaks from holdovers from the previous administration, which is never mentioned), or infighting among Trump's camp, or Chuck Todd spending half the news show on Russian involvement in America. He smugly spends the hour on negativity, and will not cover any positive news from this administration. He's so blatant, that I'm sure Tim Russert and all his professional predecessors from Meet the Press, are rolling over in their graves. Until next week. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor and I are concerned about an older dog — a black Lab, I think — who comes down every day barking, begging and having accidents in front of our door. He can hardly walk and often falls down. He has open sores all over and you can see his ribs. He is definitely almost blind. We know where his home is and went down there a few times, but no one answered the door. We're so fed up with the sadness of the situation and his using the bathroom in front of our door daily. We

It breaks our hearts to know he is suffering. — Carla V., via email DEAR CARLA: I commend you for trying to get help for this dog. I'd be interested to know what action the police took. Since the dog is still coming around, more complaints from you are necessary. Call the local police non-emergency number each time the dog shows up, and ask why the dog is still suffering and wandering off a leash. If the city or county has an animal-control department, contact it as well. It's important to document what you see: You sent me a photo of the dog, and you should give that to the authorities, along with notes on how often the dog has shown up. The Animal L egal

Moving Mountains I have a friend who spent most of his life moving houses. Can you imagine a gigantic house moving down the road to an entirely new location? Jesus spoke of a possibility that is even more mind boggling moving mountains. Not by man’s ingenuity and skill, but by speaking to them. The disciples tried to cast a demon out of a tormented boy, but could not. When Jesus came, he brought deliverance and healing to the boy. The disciples asked Jesus why they were not able to do so. Jesus said, “Because of your unbelief.” Then Jesus gave an unexpected revelation, “For assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:2021) Do you have any mountains in your way? Jesus taught that the difference maker is faith. Activate these ingredi-

ents for mountain moving faith. POTENTIAL OF FAITH. Jesus said, “If you have faith as a mu s t a rd s e e d .” A mustard seed is one of the smallest of seeds, yet, when planted, produces a large bush. It’s not how big your faith is, but what you do with the faith you have. The disciples once asked Jesus to increase their faith. (Luke 17:5-6) He told them if they had faith the size of a mustard seed, “You can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up . . . and be planted in the sea and it would obey you.’” See the potential in a mustard seed of faith. PROCLAMATION OF FAITH. Jesus said, “You shall say to this mountain.” Plant your seed by commanding your mountain to move in Jesus name. There is power in His name. (Mark 16:15-18; Acts 3:16; John 14:13-14) The words we speak with our mouth are powerful. (Proverbs 18:21) The year 2017 has some incredible things in store

for you. The number 17 is one of completeness. The 17th letter of the Hebrew alphabet means “mouth”. Plant your seed of faith by proclaiming your mountain to be moved in Jesus name. PROPHESY IN FAITH. Ezekiel was given a vision of a valley of dry bones. “God asked him, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’” He was commanded to prophesy to the dry bones. “Dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord! . . . Surely I will cause breath to enter into you and you shall live.” (Ezekiel 37:1-14) The dry bones represented Israel. When Ezekiel prophesied, the Spirit of God brought them to life again. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and prophesy to your mountain in faith. “Hear the Word of the Lord.” P R AY E R A N D FASTING FORTIFY FAITH. When the disciples asked why they could not bring deliverance to the demon harassed boy, Jesus said because of their unbelief. But he added, “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21) The spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting keeps one in the atmosphere of God’s presence. Faith and power are fortified in the soil of

prayer and fasting, and it becomes a hot bed of faith and miracles. Do you have mountains in your way? An old song says, “Got any rivers you think are uncrossable, got any mountains you cannot tunnel through? God specializes in things thought impossible. He can do what no other can do.” Your faith can move mountains. Plant the seed by speaking to your mountain. Speak forth the greatest seed. “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

HOW TO ADDRESS FREQUENT FEELINGS OF COLDNESS As people age, many report feeling chilly even when the temperature outside is warm. Studies have shown that older people are more likely to have slightly colder body temperatures than their younger counterparts. Feeling cold can be the result of the natural aging process, or it may be symptomatic of a medical condition. Understanding the reasons behind chilliness can help people take proper action. Aging adults can feel cold for various reasons. As people age, their metabolisms slow down, leading to decreased energy. During times of low energy output, one can feel cold. The American Geriatric Society Foundation for Health suggests that individuals with slower metabolisms may not produce enough heat from their own bodies to stay warm. Circulation issues also may be a concern. As people age, the walls of their blood vessels may lose their elasticity, negatively affecting circulation as a result. Vasoreceptors also may no longer be as quick to direct blood vessels in order to constrict to keep body temperature up. Inadequate fat storage may also be a contributor. Older people generally have less subcutaneous fat stores and muscle mass, both of which can insulate their bodies from

Itʼs not uncommon for older adults to feel colder. cold weather. As a result, they may have trouble regulating body temperature. Exercise and healthy eating may help remedy this situation. Certain medical conditions or medications may be to blame, too. SUNY Upstate Medical University offers that some drugs, like beta blockers, can decrease heart rate, which can reduce circulation to the extremities. High cholesterol levels can impair blood flow. Hypothyroidism, or an underperforming thyroid, also can affect a person’s ability to regulate body temperature. It’s imperative that people speak with their doctors to rule out any medical conditions or medication issues that may be contributing to their feelings of being cold. The following are some additional steps aging men and women can take to stay warm.

• Make sure you are at a healthy weight for your gender and age. • Get the cardiovascular system pumping by exercising more. • Layer clothing until you feel comfortable so that you are not adjusting the thermostat as frequently. • Wear a vest to keep your chest warm to prevent heat being drawn from the extremities. Often the body will sacrifice heat in the hands and feet to keep its core warm. • Invest in wool socks and blankets, as wool will help wick away moisture from the body. Feeling cold is usually nothing out of the ordinary when a person gets older. Fortunately, there are ways that older men and women can stay warm.

HOW TO PROMOTE HEALTHY KIDNEYS Kidney disease is a widespread issue made all the more disconcerting by the fact that many people are unaware they have it. WHAT IS A SILENT STROKE? The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling many different bodily functions. When working at optimal capacity, the brain is a wonder to behold. When illness or trauma affects the brain, various parts of the body may not work as they should. One of the more devastating things that can affect the brain is stroke. Stroke describes a sudden stoppage of blood from reaching the brain. Harvard Medical School states that if a large number of brain cells are starved of blood supply, they can die. With their demise, a person’s memory and ability to speak and move can be compromised. While many strokes come on suddenly, certain factors may indicate a person is at risk. Such factors may include prior heart attacks,

genetics, high blood pressure, smoking, or a prior stroke. However, in a particular type of stroke — a “silent stroke” — symptoms are far more subtle and difficult to spot. Silent cerebral infarction, often referred to as “SCI” or “silent stroke,” is a brain injury likely caused by a blood clot interrupting blood flow to the brain, offers the American Stroke Association. Silent strokes increase risk for other strokes and can be a sign of progressive brain damage. A silent stroke is typically only noticed as a side component of an MRI of the brain. Many times patients do not recall having a stroke and never felt any symptoms. Silent strokes should not be mistaken for mini-strokes. Mini-stroke is a brief but discrete and memorable

REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to promote their long-term health. The CDC recommends that men and women age 65 or older who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strength-training activities that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit older men and women with no preexisting health conditions are capable of

these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorousintensity aerobic activity coupled with strength training may also provide adequate physical activity for aging men and women. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women should consult with their physicians to discuss any limitations they may have and how to manage those risks while still being physically active.

Silent stroke may not exhibit any symptoms, making it more difficult to detect. There are certain ways to reduce the risk of any type of stroke. These include: • managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels • quitting smoking • reducing the risk of diabetes and effectively treating the condition if it is present • losing weight to prevent obesity

• exercising and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle • taking a low-dose aspirin or a drug that prevents blood clots. Silent strokes largely go unrecognized but can lead to significant brain injury. Getting the facts can help men and women reduce their risk for silent stroke.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a “promising” project. Look for the facts behind the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A Taurus offers comfort and advice as

you deal with an upsetting event. Use this as a learning experience that will help you avoid similar problems in the future. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it’s well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to make new friends as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New ventures continue to be favored. And with your self-confidence rising all the time, you’ll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time for the usually “serious-minded” Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary. But don’t let yourself be talked into changing your decisions. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for bringing people together. You would make a fine judge or counselor. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

A group of wagons circling up at dusk has become emblematic of that long journey. Most people assume that the wagons were placed in a circle for protection, to keep potential intruders out, but that's not entirely true. While that may have been an advantage to the arrangement, the primary motivation was to keep livestock from wandering off. • The English word "infant" comes from a Latin term whose literal meaning

is "one unable to speak." • You might be surprised to learn that fruit flies can become intoxicated, too — and they don't even have to take a drink. Just the smell of alcohol affects them. Thought for the Day: "The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." — Hermann Goring © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
