Community Trust Bank: Serving Its Communities For Over 104 Years

Community Trust Bank has a long heritage of being a family owned independent financial institution for much of its history. In February of 1923 Alfred Pitchford was appointed president of the Richview State Bank. Alfred was the grandfather of Lester Pitchford who served as President and Chairman of the Board. Lester served as president for 50 years after being appointed in 1950. Currently serving as chairwoman of the board is Lester’s daughter, Nancy Roethemeyer who replaced her grandfather, Raymond Pitchford upon his death in 1976 and Lester’s grand-

daughter Sheila Burcham is currently serving as President/CEO. Over the past 156 years, Community Trust Bank has been known by three different names. Starting out in 1860 the bank was a private business ran by Samuel Phillip Cooper and called the The Exchange Bank of S.P. Cooper located in Richview, Illinois. In 1912, when Mr. Cooper passed away his son-in-law, Jack Stanton sold the bank to a group of investors who changed the name to The Farmer’s and Merchants Bank. On August 7, 1913 the State of Illinois gave permission to another

Sheila Burcham, President/CEO and the late past chairman Lester Pitchford.

group of men to form the Richview State Bank and as a result, by September 15th of the same year, the new bank had bought out Farmer’s and Merchants Bank. After moving to Irvington on December 12, 1966, the directors changed the name to Community Trust Bank for which it is known today. This financial institution has seen many economic changes throughout its history. During the depression in 1932, the bank was closed for two weeks due to the Bank Moratorium but re-opened after a trip to Springfield with the books to prove its solvency. However, during this time, in order to keep the bank operating, the 3% semi-annual dividend was eventually reduced to zero and the $1 per meeting directors fee was given back to the bank by all board

members. These measures paid off as the bank weathered the depression almost unscathed. Community Trust has been through numerous expansions after the move to Irvington in 1966. The building in Irvington was expanded once in the early 80’s. In 1981, the board and management decided to expand their operations to include the Centralia area by putting a branch facility on the east side of town and an ATM facility on the west side of town. This facility was again expanded by doubling its space and adding a basement in the fall of 1994 enabling the data processing operations to be moved in the fall of 1996. Wanting to expand its market and continue to grow, the Board of Directors decided to expand with a branch facility in the Nashville, Illinois area.

George Straith was a watchmaker in St. Louis. He heard of a small store in Centralia that was going out of business. It was a great economy and George decided to take a leap of faith. He moved to Centralia and set up shop, not knowing anyone. He put his watchmaker’s bench in the front window to attract the attention of people passing by and did his watch repairs from there. The Centralia Recreation Complex, Celebrating Their 21st Year The Centralia Recreation Complex, located at 115 East Second Street, was a $5 million project that was built with private funds. Getting the Complex built was a team effort. There were also almost 200 individuals involved in fund raising efforts for the Complex. In addition, more than 700 individuals contributed to the campaign. On July 10, 1992 the Centralia Foundation announced that it had initiated a study to determine the feasibility of building a c o m m u n i t y c e n t e r. Foundation trustee Bruce Geary was named chairman

of the Building Committee. Preliminary architectural designs for the proposed $7 million community recreation center were unveiled on July 28, 1992. The master plan, designed for a maximum of 70,000 square feet, was split into three construction phases. The first phase would include a two-court gym. The second phase was to include an indoor pool and the third phase could contain a second gym and racquetball. Construction drawings and bids were completed in the first half of 1994, ground was broken on June 26, 1994, and the

ties for the whole family. In the 21 years since they first opened, The Centralia Recreation Complex has continued to add new equipment and classes to their facility. For more information about their current schedule of classes and other offerings, please call them at 618-532-3214.

Fisher Auto Parts: Home of the Parts Professionals In 1929, when our country was entering the great depression, Blair Coiner founded his company with high hopes, perseverance and determination. He started by selling auto parts to car dealers, service stations and garages. A Model T 1-ton truck ran a sales route from Winchester, VA into North Carolina, “rendering dealer service of the highest character at all times.” In 1933, the company offered “door-to-door” service with a fleet of 6 specially constructed trucks that carried hundreds of parts and offered mobile machine shop services. Our salesmen traveled delivery routes that kept them out for up to a week at a time, servicing remote rural areas where replacement parts were hard to come by. By 1941, the company had grown to 18 employees and serviced approximately 800 “wholesale only” accounts. Training and education were extremely important, even then, to providing

quality service. Employees and customers loaded onto buses for trips to manufacturer’s facilities for up-to-date training. After growing to 60 stores and 300

employees, Coiner Parts changed its name to Fisher Auto Parts in 1983. Art Fisher continued the company’s dedication to providing the professional installer with quality service that was second to none. Giving our customers name brand parts at competitive prices and the fastest, most accurate delivery service available was, and still is, the focus of Fisher Auto Parts. And now, over 85 years later, Fisher Auto Parts is still dedicated to the professional technician. Bo Fisher, Mr. Coiner’s grandson and C.E.O. of Fisher Auto Parts, continues the commitment to “rendering dealer service of the highest character at all times. Our goal is to provide customers the best overall value in the automotive aftermarket.” The Automotive Aftermarket has seen many changes since 1929, but our commitment to the professional installer has remained constant throughout. When time counts, professional technicians count on Federated Auto Parts.

Honey Pot Comfort Wash Makes Laundry Time Fun Dairy farmer Jason Loepker of Bartelso, Illinois started doing rental properties in the Centralia area in 2009 and saw the need for a nice laundromat. He thought it would be nice to have a laundromat that the community could go to where the kids would have something to do. Honey Pot Comfort Wash has an arcade area just for that. Loepker stated that in the future he would like to expand the arcade section for the youth in our community to give them someplace to go to instead of the streets.

The History of Country Bob's

Where do great products come from? Usually, they are the result of much time being exerted and a tremendous amount of love being invested. At that point, you can say, “That’s mine! I made that.” That’s the way Country Bob Edson created his All Purpose Sauce. In 1968, Country Bob perfected the sauce of his dreams. After years of giving the sauce to friends and family, he began to sell it

in 1977. The reaction was overwhelming just as it is today. Almost everyone who tries Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce becomes a lifelong user. And why not, it is the perfect complement to practically any meal set on your table. It was actually October of 1982 when Country Bob, Inc. became the company, which remains today. Bob Edson, Terry Edson, Al Malekovic and Reed Malekovic formed

a corporation with equal ownership. Since that time, Country Bob’s distribution has magnified regionally in all directions from our corporate office located in Centralia, Illinois. Even with the tremendous growth we have not forgotten where we came from, continuing in our relentless pursuit of product excellence. Along with our All Purpose Sauce, we have expanded our product line to include BBQ Sauce and

Seasoning Salt as well as Apple Chipotle and Honey Habanero All Purpose Sauce and the newest member to the family Country Bob’s Marinade. With our fully automated bottling line we also have the capability of producing Private Label products for stores or restaurants. It would be nice if we could claim responsibility for the success of the company, however, credit must be given where credit is due. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” We have placed true ownership of Country Bob, Inc. in the hands of God. “Christ is our CEO” and He is an Awesome Boss!

Carl’s 4 Wheel Drive & Performance Center Three years after completing college and receiving a degree in automotive Technology, and with his love for race cars, 4-wheeling and fixing things that challenged him, Carl’s 4-Wheel Drive and Performance Center was established in 1977. Located in a small town called Bartelso, where the population is approximately 600, Carl welcomed his first customer through his doors. It was a small three bay shop, built on a corner lot of his father’s farm and was originally known as Carl’s Automotive & 4-Wheel Drive Center. Back in the late 70’s, the 4-wheel drive industry was in its infancy. Being involved in drag racing since his high school days, Carl’s interest started to turn to the fun of 4-wheeling in the mud to satisfy his need for that “adventure rush’ we all look to find. Seeing the desperate need for a supplier and a knowledgeable source for 4-wheel drive and performance parts for his local area, Carl’s can be considered being on the ground floor of the industry. Going on 40 years, he and his knowledgeable staff have taken that one customer the day he opened and expanded their customer base to now include thousands of satisfied customers, not only local, but across the region and states. Now serving them in a 10,000 square foot facility and unlimited parts access, the satisfaction and friendship of our customers is the foundation on which the company stands. Carl’s is a true brick & mortar place that treats all its customers with respect and honesty. If they cannot help you with something you are looking for, they will recommend only places that value their customers as much as they do.

Knapp Oil: 4 Generations

Knapp Oil is a family owned business that began in 1933 by Ed and Clea Knapp. They began serving customers in Rinard, IL and soon moved to Xenia, IL where they sold groceries, clothing and food as well as heating oil. The business grew, as did the family with the additions of three sons, Eldred, Howard and Bill. The Effingham Truck Plaza opened in 1966 and in the late 60s / early 70s, Knapp Oil Company purchased the Home Oil Company of Marion, IL. In the 1980s Eldred Knapp held off on building a convenience store in Xenia to avoid competing with a good friend that owned a restaurant downtown. Finally in 1986 the first Knapp Oil Convenience Store opened

in Xenia and later spread to Clay City, Cisne and the other current locations as the “76” brand. When Eldred and Howard passed away, Bill’s son Chuck and sonin-law Rick began working for the company as the 3rd Generation. In 1995, Knapp Oil decided to become Citgo branded, a very aggressive brand in the Midwest. Knapp Oil added their 4th Generation in 2011 to the company with the addition of the propane division. Bryan Knapp, propane manager, brings new energy to the company and has begun business across Southern Illinois. The company foresees the propane division becoming a major player in the propane industry and a significant portion of the company.

LeeTronics: Electronics Are In Lee’s Blood

Nature Trail Celebrates The Success Of Their Residents Nature Trail has been offering the very best in health care since 1970. Here at Nature Trail Health Care Center, we strive to give your loved ones the best in compassion and nursing care. Nature Trail is dedicated to getting them the therapy and care they need so they can return home to their normal lives. Call Dixie McGill today for a tour of Nature Trail Health Care Center at 618-472-4208

At a young age, Lee Boozer found out he had electronics in his blood. He said, “I would go around and get old junk pieces and make lamps out of them, and they would work.” When he started high school in 1969 he had already taken four years of AC/DC Fundamentals which would help him with the career he was so fond of. After graduating high school plus twoand-a-half years of Kaskaskia College, he received his Associate in Applied Science

(AAS) degree, and went to work at Murray Center. He also began working part time at a small place in Wamac. By 1990, Boozer decided to call it quits at Murray Center and joined with two other men to run a business called Advance Service Stereo Shop. He worked with them until 2002, then closed another door in his life and opened what we know today as LeeTronics. Lee Boozer built a garage next to his house, and that is where he has worked ever since.

Mt. Vernon TV & Appliance Since 1981 Mt. Vernon TV & Appliance was started by Dwayn Klein on October 1, 1981, and it’s remained a family owned, family friendly business over these 35 plus years. Dwayn had previously worked at his brother’s appliance store in Fairview Heights, Illinois and was offered a position with Maytag Industries, but he was going to have to move to Nebraska. Not wanting to move there, he convinced Maytag to let him open a store in Mt. Vernon. Mt. Vernon TV & Appliance’s first location was at 225 North 10th, and later moved to 819 Broadway. The third and current location is 3006 Broadway at The Gallery, which also includes Carls and Jackson Jewelers. In the beginning the TV and appliance lines were GE, Maytag, Kitchen Aid, and Jenn Air. Through the years Whirlpool, Samsung, Sub-Zero Wolf, and just last year a Serta Bedding Gallery have been added. As a family business, sons Jeff and Mike, and daughter Cindy Timsley, are involved in the store. Dwayn said, “Why not. ‘The kids’ all grew up being at the business.” Mt. Vernon TV & Appliance takes pride in the quality lines they carry, but even more so, in their knowledgeable sales and service departments. Servicing everything we sell since 1981

American Family Insurance Is Celebrating 20 Years In Business!

In 1997 Darrel Mays was approached by American Family Insurance, to open the first agency in Mt. Vernon, IL. At the time he was a livestock feed salesman, selling to farmers, ranchers and feed distributors. He had told himself that if he were to ever sell anything else it would be something that he could sell to everyone. Obviously, livestock feed isn’t something that you can sell to just anyone. The timing was right and he opened a scratch office for American Family Insurance in Mt. Vernon with no policies in place. With the help of the community and a lot of hard work, not only was he able to succeed, but in August of 2005 he was able to open a second location in Benton, Illinois.

Sofas and More originated over 6 years ago after Jeannie Berger decided to go into business for herself. She said, "I have been in the customer service industry in all of my previous jobs, so this, combined with my love for interior design along with helping customers, is how Sofas and More came to life." Jeannie and co-owner Jerry Burton sell new name brand furniture for every room in your home as well as mattresses. She has everyday low prices and there are no gimmicks. She says her main brand that sells very well is Ashley Furniture. Jeannie said, "Being a native of Centralia and raising my family here, what better place to have your business than in your home town. Thank you to all of my customers for your support and for keeping your shopping local. I am looking forward to serving this area for many more years to come."

The Shoppers Weekly Papers: 29 Years, But Who’s Counting?

It’s hard to describe a dream in just a few short paragraphs. But that’s just what The Shoppers Weekly is — a dream come true, birthed in the heart and minds of a few people who believe in the future of this area. A dream which will place a free weekly paper within the reach of every area resident, one which will encourage, enlighten, inspire, and entertain. A paper based on good news, great hope and a positive outlook on life. A channel that will give advertisers a consistent, large and rewarding penetration of their market and a good return for each advertising dollar spent. In short, a perfect paper. A tall order, but then, isn’t that what dreams are made of? This dream emerged from many thoughts and casual conversations over the year between the following parties: Cathy Wilson-Stuehmeier, an ex-newspaper woman turned radio executive; her husband

John Stuehmeier, an ex-retailer turned radio executive; Bill DuPerrieu, a retired local newspaper advertising veteran; Kathy McClain, another newspaper veteran, who had just recently returned to this area; Kevin Wayne McClain, a local radio personality and sales manager of WILY/HIT 95 Radio; and Virgil Downen, an ex-newspaper man turned advertising consultant. At first it was nothing but a series of “Wouldn’t it be nice if...” and “Wouldn’t you just like to...” or “If we only could...” Gradually, the dream intensified to the point that duties were assigned and detailed research was begun. Discussions were held several times a week. Every aspect was gone over and over — and over. Expert advice was sought and received. The pros and cons were examined. The positive and negative points of view were totally exhausted. Finally realization came that all of the talking

was done — it was time to make the irreversible decision. Risky? Yes! Difficult? Definitely! Should we do it? GO FOR IT!! The Shoppers Weekly, Inc. started in 1988 as one paper with a circulation of approximately 7,000, covering the Centralia, Illinois area only. Today The Shoppers Weekly Papers has grown to cover 23,000 homes and businesses in a four-county area. We also publish an annual women’s magazine, Christmas

catalog and a summer magazine, just to name a few of our wellread publications. As an advertiser, you would have to buy at least seven different publications to get the same non-duplicated coverage we offer, at least 80% by direct mail. The goal of every member of our team remains the same: The best combination of coverage, price, experience, service and results. We look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home 235 N. Sycamore

Sutherland–Garnier Funeral Home... Family Tradition Since 1874 It started in 1874 when Gus A. Garnier joined his aunt Theresa Haussler and her son, Berthold, in the Haussler undertaking business. Mr. Garnier and his sons, Robert and Ira worked for three generations of the Haussler family. When the Haussler company dissolved in 1929, Gus Garnier and his sons established the Garnier and Sons Funeral Home. Within months they moved to 235 N. Sycamore, where the funeral home remains to this day. The third generation, Ira Garnier, Jr., and Gorden Elliston (husband of Mary Louis Garnier) and fourth generation Richard Garnier joined the family business. In 2011 Mike and Judy Sutherland of Hillcrest purchased the funeral home from the Garnier family and the family tradition of generations in the funeral home continues as their children, Amanda (Sutherland) Ponyi and John Sutherland are licensed funeral directors and are involved every day in the funeral home.

Hillcrest Funeral Home, Cemetery and Cremation Center

Hillcrest’s 96th Anniversary Year In 1921, unhappy with the way other burial sites were being maintained, five Centralia businessmen began Hillcrest Memorial Park Co. It was located north of Centralia on property known as Howell Hill. Around 1930, Paul K. Owens was one of the grounds keepers at the cemetery. Later his widow, Aleida, married one of the original founders of the company. In the years following, Aleida’s son, George Owens and his wife Genny took over the cemetery. In 1959, Aleida’s daughter Dorothy Sutherland began running the cemetery. Mrs. Sutherland continued in the family business until 2008. Throughout those years, her son Mike and his wife Judy began working at Hillcrest Memorial Park and are the current owners of the growing Hillcrest Funeral Home, Cemetery and Cremation Center. Following tradition, their daughter Amanda (Sutherland) Ponyi and son John Sutherland are now involved as licensed funeral directors. Five generations strong and offering stability year after year.

Farmers State Bank was organized in 1911 and opened its doors for business as a private bank when the owners and directors of Gluesenkamp Bank of St. Peters, who knew something of Hoffman, concluded it would be a good place to start a bank. The private bank was changed to a state bank in 1921. In 1933 Ray W. Schnitzmeyer of Hoffman was elected as a cashier and served until 1967 when he was elected to serve as executive Vice President. The current president is Glenn Knolhoff From 1911 to 2016 — 105 years — the bank’s mission statement remains the same: to offer the finest in banking services as well as being involved in community. Farmers State Bank came from a humble beginning to now having three locations for your convenience.
