Early Voting Notice Consolidated Election

A Leader Among Men There are times when you meet a guy and just instantly like him. It's part instinct, part intuition. Your bloodline has survived long enough to see you into the world; while you're in it, you tend to gravitate to the people who will make living in it a little more comfortable. Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour is just such a man. I know. He played softball for me. Let me explain. I attended the University of Maryland, and first met Kevin Plank at the worldfamous B entley's on College Park's Route 1. A childhood friend was dating a guy who lived with Plank, and when his house had a vacancy, at her urging, he vetted me at Bentley's. Plank looked like a guy's guy -- not a pretty boy, definitely a tough guy, smiled a lot, engaging, strong handshake ... emanated a sort of uncommon stature. Plank was unlike any college kid I had ever met, and living in his house with a motley crew of ACC

Steven Fox, Marion County Clerk, announces Early Voting Requirements. Voters can cast a ballot prior to the April 4, 2017 Election Day for the Consolidated Election without offering a reason or excuse for voting early. All 48 precincts are able to vote. The law prohibits anyone who voted during the early voting period from also voting at the polls on Election Day. Early votes will be counted after the polls close on Election Day. For more information about early voting or early voting location, contact Steven Fox at the Marion County Clerk’s office in room 202 at the Marion County Courthouse or call 548-3852. The Marion County Clerk’s Office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday except holidays.

Dear Editor, We are number one. Hurray for the great (good, fair) state of Illinois for surpassing all the other 49 states. Illinois has the highest property tax of all 50 states. Illinois is the only state to lose population, in the latest released report. Illinois has the nation's worst credit rating with rock bottom in view. Illinois is billions of dollars in debt, surpassing California for the top spot. Illinois is

striving to be number one in other categories: Payouts to retired state employees; subjecting its citizens and taxpayers to higher taxes and costs of living; eroding the state's reputation in the eyes of the nation; etc. Why is it that other states which have lower property tax, lower sales tax, lower income taxes, and lower other costs to their residents are doing much better? Illinois did not get into this state of affairs overnight. It took

decades to get into this situation. Governor Rauner did not create this mess. It has been the failure of past governmental leaders, who have controlled the purse strings, to properly manage fiscal policies, to limit spending to only necessary priorities, to invest in profitable business ventures, and to attract businesses from outside Illinois, etc. Extra: Labor unions are great entities that protect workers' rights to decent wages and decent working

SPRING LEAF VACUUMING TO BEGIN SOON IN CENTRALIA Republic Services will start the leaf vacuuming service for City residents of Centralia as of Monday, March 20. The vacuuming service will last for a period of 4 weeks ending on Friday, April 14th. The service will follow routes as established in August 2012 (for a detailed map see website at www.cityofcentralia.org under: Departments, City Clerk, Utilities). The usual landscape waste and limbs will continue to be collected every week in approved paper bags. The following are simple rules that we ask each resident to follow to make the

process as smooth as possible: 1. Please rake your leaves to within four (4) feet of the curb but DO NOT place leaves on the street or in the gutter as they will clog the storm drains. This is typically the area between the sidewalk and the curb. 2. Please DO NOT place leaves behind or near obstacles such as mailboxes, trees, hedges, fences, etc. If there are any obstacles preventing your leaves from being picked up, they WILL NOT be picked up. 3. Please avoid parking vehicles in front of piles of leaves on the day that they are to be collected. The

Gautam Jha, M.D.

vacuum trucks require a MINIMUM of forty five (45) feet of curb access to safely operate. If a vehicle blocks access to the leaves, they WILL NOT be picked up. 4. Please DO NOT mix trash, yard waste such as limbs, weeds, grass or any other material with the leaves. Yard waste mixed with leaves causes safety concerns and equipment malfunction. These items should be placed in approved paper bags for weekly collection or bundled properly. Leaf collection will begin at 6:00 a.m. and will end by 6:30 p.m., Monday through

Friday. Leaves MUST be ready for vacuum by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled day. If your leaves are not picked up on the regularly scheduled day (due to severe weather, equipment malfunction or a holiday) they will be picked up the following day or as soon as possible. About 45 days into Trump's presidency and what's being talked about by Congress and the news media? What's top of the news is The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! Unbelievable! The word for the week (last week's was resist, resist, resist) is distract, distract, distract. Why? Because President Trump is gaining strength. Last Tuesday's address to Congress could have been pulled from one of Trump's 2016 campaign speeches. His agenda to Congress was exactly what he had proposed on the campaign trail. How refreshing from a political figure. Something we haven't seen in a long time. And how did the general public perceive the speech? About 80% of those polled felt the Trump address was presidential in its tone while outlining his full agenda for improving America. You know, not the ranting, raving "commie" lunat ic t he lamestream media makes him out to be. The address was a big wake-up call for the media and Trump resisters that, yes, he is President and he might fix something if we don't stop him. So the new plan is not just resist, resist, it's resist and distract. The "Russian thing" will be part of the big distraction. After all, the President's plan for Russia is: 1. Do nothing if Putin invades their neighbors. 2. Do nothing if Putin joins with our other adversaries that hate us. 3. Do nothing if Putin threatens our NATO allies. 4. Do nothing if Putin decides to enter the Syrian war. 5. Tell Russia that after the election, our ability to negotiate will be better. Oh, wait, that's not Trump's

plan, it was Obama's for eight years. Was Obama really "the good friend" of Russia and Putin? Makes you wonder, doesn't it? And speaking of Obama, our lamestream media is "appalled" that Trump would tweet, after listening to news sources, including the BBC, that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower in 2016 during the election campaign. How dare Trump tarnish the name of the greatest president ever! You know, the president that "illegally" had the Internal Revenue Service harass and fire "enemies to the state," that being church organizations, anything related to the "Tea Party," etc. But on to other matters. After 45 days of a Trump administration, his cabinet is finally getting close to full confirmation by the Senate. I think, as of press time, those remaining key unconfirmed are Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta and Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, plus cabinet level officials U.S. Trade Representative Rober t Lighthizer and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. These are pretty key people in getting the Administration's agenda going strong. The following is a list of cabinet secretaries and other cabinet level officials: Vice President Mike Pence White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster Wh ite Hous e Pre ss Secretary Sean Spicer Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin Attorney General Jeff Sessions Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross Secretary of Housing Ben Carson

Secretary of Energy Rick Perry Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke Secretary of Veterans Affair David Shulkin Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Secretary of Defense James Mattis Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley Director of the CIA Mike Pompeo Director of the Office of Management & Budget Mick Mulvaney Administrator of the EPA Scott Pruitt Administrator of the SBA Linda McMahon Senior Advisors to the President Jared Kushner and Stephen Miller Senior Counselor to the President and White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway Senior Counselor for Economic Initiatives Dina Powell A final thought: What could happen if we, including the "gotcha" news media and the establishment Congress, whose daily goal is just to "run out the clock," could work together to make America greater than ever, and give credit to all! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. JOIN THE RED CROSS MOVEMENT THIS MARCH BY GIVING BLOOD All eligible blood donors are encouraged to give blood and help save lives in March, Red Cross Month. Donating is easier than ever with the Blood Donor App and RapidPass. With the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, donors can conveniently schedule and manage donation appointments, access their donor card, track the impact of their donations and earn rewards. Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questions online at redcrossblood.org/ RapidPass before coming to their appointments. “I've always thought it was the right thing to do, to donate when it was convenient for me,” said Lance Ford. “But after my triplets were born premature and needed transfusions in the neonatal intensive care unit, I decided that it was more important to seek out opportunities to donate, rather than just waiting until it was

convenient to me. The Red Cross apps and notifications make it very easy to find a location near you, and they are so courteous, respectful and efficient. There is really no excuse not to donate. It's such a small thing that makes such a big difference!” March has been recognized as Red Cross Month by every U.S. president since 1943 in celebration of the Red Cross volunteers who help those in need by giving their time, money or blood. Join their ranks by making an appointment to give blood by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Sharin' O' The Green (Part 2) Food and merriment toast the wearin' o' the green. With shamrocks for good luck, surely everyone can be a little Irish today. Last week's column featured the meat and veggies for your Irish dinner. This weeks recipes complete the meal.

Irish Soda Bread 4 cups flour 1 T. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 cup raisins 1 T. caraway seeds 2 cups buttermilk

In bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Add raisins and caraway seeds; stir well. Stir in buttermilk to make a soft dough. Knead dough very lightly and divide in half. Shape each half into round loaf and place on greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated 375° oven 45 minutes or until golden. Makes 2 small loaves. NOTE: Freeze the extra loaf, or better yet, giftwrap it as a special St. Patrick's Day greeting.

Shamrock Pie Chocolate Shamrocks (below) 1 cup chocolate wafer crumbs 1/4 cup butter, softened 1 pkg. (3 oz.) lime-flavored gelatin

1/2 cup boiling water 1 pint vanilla or pistachio ice cream softened

Prepare Chocolate Shamrocks and refrigerate. Combine crumbs and softened butter. Press against bottom and sides of 8 inch pie plate. Empty gelatin into bowl; add boiling water and stir to dissolve. Stir in ice cream a few spoonfuls at a time, beating vigorously as it thickens. Pile mixture into lined pie plate and chill until serving time. Place shamrocks on pie.

Chocolate Shamrocks 4 oz. semisweet chocolate Melt chocolate over hot water. Spread evenly on sheet of waxed paper. Let cool until firm. Press a lightly oiled shamrock-shaped cookie cutter sharply into chocolate (or cut around a shamrock pattern). Leave shamrocks on the waxed paper and refrigerate until ready to use.

Irish Coffee 4 T. sugar 4 oz. Irish whiskey

4 cups freshly brewed strong coffee 1 cup whipped cream

Set out 4 Irish coffee glasses and dissolve 1 T. sugar in 1 oz. of whiskey in each glass. Fill to 1/2 inch from rim with hot strong coffee; float whipped cream on top. Makes 4 servings. May the luck of the Irish be with you!

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Lion and the Lamb It is said that if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. The month of March, in our neck of the woods, came in like a lion rather than a lamb. John, the beloved of the Lord had a vision of the Lion and the Lamb while exiled to the Isle of Patmos. From that vision, he wrote the book of Revelation. In Revelation chapter 5, he wept because no one was found worthy to take the seven-sealed book and open the seals that would reveal God’s plan for the end-times. One of the elders said, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll . . . But when John turned expecting to see a lion, he saw, ‘A lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the

11

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

throne.’” (Revelation 5:5-14) All the angels and saints in heaven worshipped the Lamb. As you march into a New Year, behold the One who is the Lion and the Lamb. As you wait upon Him and worship, the wind of the Holy Spirit will propel you into a new vitality, a new vision with new values, and new victories. BEHOLD THE LION. When John turned expecting to see a Lion, he saw a Lamb who had triumphed. The prophets foretold that the Messiah who would reign as king, He would be from the Jewish tribe of Judah. So, He was called the Lion of Judah. As the lion is referred to as the king of the jungle, the lion speaks of Jesus’ majesty and ruler-ship. When Jesus was arrested, and brought to trial before Pilate, the governor asked him, “’Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied.” (Matthew

27:11) When Jesus was crucified, “Above his head they placed the written charge against him: ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” (Matthew 27:37) Jesus triumphed over death, hell, and the grave when He arose on the third day. “He ascended on high. He led captivity captive. He gave gifts unto men.” (Psalm 68:17-18; Ephesians 4:8) As you wait before the Lion of Judah receive your marching orders from the king, don’t get your marching orders from anyone else and, certainly don’t write your own. Obey the king and you will be blessed. (Luke 11:27-28) As some have said, “Either He is Lord of all or not at all.” BEHOLD THE LAMB. When John turned to see the Lion, he saw a lamb, having been slain. (Revelation 5:6) Isaiah prophesied of a suffering servant, the sacrificial lamb, whose blood would make atonement for sin. (Isaiah 53) When John stood baptizing in the Jordan River, he saw Jesus and announced, “Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) All of heaven will sing a new song, “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain and

with your blood, you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.” (Revelation 5:8-18) One of the most often used titles for Jesus in the book of Revelation is the Lamb. “For the Lamb, at the center of the throne, will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water.” (Revelation 7:9, 17) Worship the Lamb of God. At the end of the Great Tribulation period, you can have a part in the wonderful Marriage Supper of the Lamb that signifies and seals the church in union with Christ. “’Hallelujah! For our Lord God, Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad . . . For the wedding of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready.’ Fine linen, bright and clean, was given to her to wear.” (Revelation 19:6-9) Are you ready? The Lion, who is the Lamb, shall soon march onto center stage and rule the world from the throne of David. Every knee shall bow. Get your marching orders from Him who is the Lion and the Lamb.

You can always tell a real friend: When you’ve made a fool of yourself he doesn’t feel like you’ve done a permanent job. –Laurence J. Peter

VOLUNTEER RAINFALL OBSERVERS IN ILLINOIS TO HOLD WORKSHOP Every morning hundreds of volunteer rainfall observers in Illinois, including observers in southern Illinois head out to check their rain gauges rain or shine. They report their measurements as part of a growing national program, and new volunteers are needed throughout Illinois. The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network is currently looking to recruit new observers in Jef ferson, Marion, Clinton, B ond, and Washington counties. CoCoRaHS is a grassroots volunteer network of backyard weather observers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow) in their local communities. The program started in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1998 and now exists in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. More than 10,000 volunteers participate nationwide.

Volunteers enter their observation on an interactive web site, and observations are immediately viewable on maps or in tables. CoCoRaHS observations can be viewed at www.cocorahs.org. There are currently more than 500 observers across the state of Illinois making and reporting daily rainfall and snow observations, supplementing the observations made at airports and by N WS C o op e r at ive Observers. These observations are used every day by the National Weather Service, private meteorologists and climatologists, the media, civil engineers, municipalities, farmers, and many others, including the general public. “Variations in rain and snow really make a big difference for agriculture, wildlife and water supplies,” says Steve Hilberg, I l l i nois C o C o R a H S Coordinator. “Getting involved as a volunteer CoCoRaHS observer is a

great way to give something back to your commu n it y by h e lpi ng monitor its natural resources. It’s a lot of fun as well.” Be a part of this great team! In partnership with University of Illinois Extension, CoCoRaHS will be holding a training session in Mt. Vernon. There is no charge to attend, but pre-registration is required. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Illinois Extension Office, 4618 Broadway, Mt. Vernon, IL. To register for this session go to: https://web.extension.illinois.edu/ re g i st r at i on ? RegistrationID=16154 or call Laurie George at 618242-0780. To find out more about the CoCoRaHS program or to join, visit www.cocorahs.org and click on the “Join COCORAHS” link on the web page.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We had a very scary weekend when our new kitten, "Maxie," who is about 12 weeks old, curled up on his bed and wouldn't wake up. I rushed him to the veterinarian, where he was given fluids but took several hours to come around. He stayed lethargic for the next couple of days. I feel terrible that he got so ill with a respiratory infection, and that I didn't notice anything wrong. What signs should I have looked for that might have kept him from getting so ill? — Doreen in Wheeling, West Virginia DEAR DOREEN:

Observant owners often can spot when things aren't quite right with their kittens and adult cats, but sometimes illness strikes seemingly without warning. Kittens can become ill very quickly; Maxie may have begun showing symptoms during the night, when you were asleep and couldn't observe him. And often, cats reveal few to no symptoms at all. They'll frequently try to hide symptoms of illness — an instinct for self-preservation. Subtle signs that things aren't right include your cat hiding away and not wanting to come out; reduced appetite; lack of interest in toys and things that used to stimulate him; and physical signs like slower response or trouble walking. Vomiting or diarrhea are major warning signs, of course. Today, put aside any guilt at not catching Maxie's illness sooner — that may not have been an option — and instead focus on helping him recover. Follow the vet's

by Samantha Weaver • It was world-renowned American photographer Ansel Adams who made the following sage observation: "It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment." • You might be surprised to learn that the blood of a grasshopper is white. • Tacumbu prison in

Asuncion, Paraguay, is notorious for its overcrowded conditions: 3 , 5 0 0 i n m at e s a re crowded into a space designed for half that number, and many of them sleep on cardboard directly on the floor. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The adventurous Aries won’t be disappointed with taking on a new challenge, despite some initial misgivings. Look for this move to open other opportunities down the line. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Let that beautiful Bovine smile not only put you at ease, but also show that you’re ready, willing and more than able to confound the naysayers around you. A new admirer has important news. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful how you handle a relationship that you’re hoping to save. You already have the facts on your side. Avoid weakening your position by embellishing it with unnecessary dramatics. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking definitive stands isn’t easy for the often-wavering Moon Child. But you not only need to stay with your decision, but also reassure others it was the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As a proud Lion, you’re right to be upset about those who might be lying about you to others. But the best revenge is proving them wrong by succeeding at what you set out to do. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a “promising” project. Look for the facts behind the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it’s well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to make new friends as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New ventures continue to be favored. And with your self-confidence rising all the time, you’ll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time for the usually “serious-minded” Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary.
