A Leader Among Men There are times when you meet a guy and just instantly like him. It's part instinct, part intuition. Your bloodline has survived long enough to see you into the world; while you're in it, you tend to gravitate to the people who will make living in it a little more comfortable. Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour is just such a man. I know. He played softball for me. Let me explain. I attended the University of Maryland, and first met Kevin Plank at the worldfamous B entley's on

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area College Park's Route 1. A childhood friend was dating a guy who lived with Plank, and when his house had a vacancy, at her urging, he vetted me at Bentley's. Plank looked like a guy's guy -- not a pretty boy, definitely a tough guy, smiled a lot, engaging, strong handshake ... emanated a sort of uncommon stature. Plank was unlike any college kid I had ever met, and living in his house with a motley crew of ACC wrestlers, football players, a baseball player (me), hockey player and potato chip-salesman's son, plus the women who loved us -- all of us had girlfriends, so we were kept well in check -- was as great an experience as I've ever had. But it's also where I had the privilege of witnessing Plank in action as a businessman.
My first night living there, Plank grilled me about the Grateful Dead. He had heard there was a marketplace in the parking lots, and I, no stranger to the scene, explained it to him in great detail. Within a few days of the show, hundreds of T-shirts were delivered to our house, assembled accorded to size and sold at the next few Dead shows by Plank and his team. Before Valentine's Day, he was the guy who drove to the docks of Baltimore and negotiated for a huge shipment of roses for pennies on the dollar. He came back to College Park, built a call-center in our living room (beer on tap), and hired us to take orders after he had plastered the campus with fliers touting $19 roses by the dozen. The guy was 21. He invented Under

Whom did Evander Holyfield beat to win the undisputed heavyweight boxing crown for the first time?

Armour out of necessity. He was a stocky, Irish kid who played football very hard, and he sweated a lot ... an awful lot. I think one day he weighed the T-shirt under his pads, and it contained about 11 pounds of water weight. That led him to invent Under Armour, and his salesmanship after graduation took him over the top. Ever since, he has done nothing but champion the American worker and add a great deal of excitement to the world of sports. But when he expressed enthusiasm for our president's economic agenda, a bunch of people did the mindless #hashtag thing and tried to create uproar. This, to a guy that has done everything he can to return jobs to Baltimore, to keep his company as American as ever ... a guy who consistently gives back to his
community, a guy that shakes your hand and means what he says. Bashing Kevin Plank? Not on my watch. Plank said he wants to create jobs and thinks Trump can help. Personally, I can't wait for

NASHVILLE HORNETTES WIN CLASS 2A REGIONAL
JOIN THE RED CROSS MOVEMENT THIS MARCH BY GIVING BLOOD
The Hornettes won the IHSA Class 2A Sparta Regional defeating Greenville 42-40. The Hornettes then moved on to the IHSA Class 2A Johnston City Sectional defeating the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs 36-32. The Hornettes season came to an end against the Mater Dei Lady Knights in the Sectional Final on February 16. The Hornettes lost to Mater Dei 46-24. The Hornettes ended the season with a record of 25-7.
All eligible blood donors are encouraged to give blood and help save lives in March, Red Cross Month. Donating is easier than ever with the Blood Donor App and RapidPass. With the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, donors can conveniently schedule and manage donation appointments, access their donor card, track the impact of their donations and earn rewards. Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questions online at redcrossblood.org/RapidPass before coming to their appointments. “I've always thought it was the right thing to do, to donate when it was convenient for me,” said Lance Ford. “But after my triplets were born premature and needed transfusions in the neonatal intensive care unit, I decided that it was more important to seek out opportunities to donate, rather than just waiting until it was convenient to me. The Red Cross apps and notifications make it very easy to find a location near you, and they are so courteous, respectful and efficient. There is really no excuse not to donate. It's such a small thing that makes such a big difference!” March has been recognized as Red Cross Month by every U.S. president

AFA COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE COMING UP Since 1996, AFA’s partnerships have awarded more than $9 million in academic scholarships, and provided leader training to 13,000 students and young professionals. In Washington County alone, 17 students have received $54,400 in scholarships during the 14-year community partnership with AFA. Eligibility requirements for the Washington County Community Scholarship include any high school
seniors enrolling in an accredited college of agriculture. They must also be a resident of Washington County. The AFA will only accept online applications, but this process allows students to qualify for National AFA Scholarships in addition to our local AFA Scholarship. This process provides an extra opportunity for scholarships from the National AFA organization if the candidate(s) aren’t selected as the local recipient.
T h e 2 0 1 7 A FA Community Scholarship has a deadline of March 17, 2017. More information and the application can be found at: www.agfuture. org/scholarships. VOLUNTEER RAINFALL OBSERVERS IN ILLINOIS TO HOLD WORKSHOP Every morning hundreds of volunteer rainfall observers in Illinois, including observers in southern Illinois head out to check their rain gauges rain or shine. They report their measurements as part of a growing national program, and new volunteers are needed throughout Illinois. The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network is currently looking to recruit new obser vers in Jefferson, Marion, Clinton, Bond, and Washington counties. CoCoRaHS is a grassroots volunteer network of backyard weather observers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow) in their local communities. The program started in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1998 and now exists in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. More than 10,000 volun-
teers participate nationwide. Volunteers enter their observation on an interactive web site, and observations are immediately viewable on maps or in tables. CoCoRaHS observations can be viewed at www.cocorahs.org. There are currently more than 500 observers across the state of Illinois making and reporting daily rainfall and snow observations, supplementing the observations made at airports and by NWS Cooperative Observers. These observations are used every day by the National Weather Service, private meteorologists and climatologists, the media, civil engineers, municipalities, farmers, and many others, including the general public. “Variations in rain and snow really make a big difference for agriculture, wildlife and water supplies,” says Steve Hilberg, Illinois CoCoRaHS Coordinator. “Getting involved as a vol-
unteer CoCoRaHS observer is a great way to give something back to your community by helping monitor its natural resources. It’s a lot of fun as well.” Be a part of this great team! In partnership with University of Illinois Extension, CoCoRaHS will be holding a training session in Mt. Vernon. There is no charge to attend, but pre-registration is required. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Illinois Extension Office, 4618 Broadway, Mt. Vernon, IL. To register for this session go to: https:// web.extension.illinois.edu/ registration/?Registration ID=16154 or call Laurie George at 618-242-0780. About 45 days into Trump's presidency and what's being talked about by Congress and the news media? What's top of the news is The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! Unbelievable! The word for the week (last week's was resist, resist, resist) is distract, distract, distract. Why? Because President Trump is gaining strength. Last Tuesday's address to Congress could have been pulled from one of Trump's 2016 campaign speeches. His agenda to Congress was exactly what he had proposed on the campaign trail. How refreshing from a political figure. Something we haven't seen in a long time. And how did the general public perceive the speech? About 80% of those polled felt the Trump address was presidential in its tone while outlining his full agenda for improving America. You know, not the ranting, raving "commie" lunat ic t he lamestream media makes him out to be. The address was a big wake-up call for the media and Trump resisters that, yes, he is President and he might fix something if we don't stop him. So the new plan is not just resist, resist, it's resist and distract. The "Russian thing" will be part of the big distraction. After all, the President's plan for Russia is: 1. Do nothing if Putin invades their neighbors. 2. Do nothing if Putin joins with our other adversaries that hate us. 3. Do nothing if Putin threatens our NATO allies. 4. Do nothing if Putin decides to enter the Syrian war. 5. Tell Russia that after the election, our ability to negotiate will be better. Oh, wait, that's not Trump's
plan, it was Obama's for eight years. Was Obama really "the good friend" of Russia and Putin? Makes you wonder, doesn't it? And speaking of Obama, our lamestream media is "appalled" that Trump would tweet, after listening to news sources, including the BBC, that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower in 2016 during the election campaign. How dare Trump tarnish the name of the greatest president ever! You know, the president that "illegally" had the Internal Revenue Service harass and fire "enemies to the state," that being church organizations, anything related to the "Tea Party," etc. But on to other matters. After 45 days of a Trump administration, his cabinet is finally getting close to full confirmation by the Senate. I think, as of press time, those remaining key unconfirmed are Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta and Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, plus cabinet level officials U.S. Trade Representative Rober t Lighthizer and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. These are pretty key people in getting the Administration's agenda going strong. The following is a list of cabinet secretaries and other cabinet level officials: Vice President Mike Pence White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster Wh ite Hous e Pre ss Secretary Sean Spicer Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin Attorney General Jeff Sessions Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross Secretary of Housing Ben Carson
Secretary of Energy Rick Perry Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke Secretary of Veterans Affair David Shulkin Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Secretary of Defense James Mattis Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley Director of the CIA Mike Pompeo Director of the Office of Management & Budget Mick Mulvaney Administrator of the EPA Scott Pruitt Administrator of the SBA Linda McMahon Senior Advisors to the President Jared Kushner and Stephen Miller Senior Counselor to the President and White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway Senior Counselor for Economic Initiatives Dina Powell A final thought: What could happen if we, including the "gotcha" news media and the establishment Congress, whose daily goal is just to "run out the clock," could work together to make America greater than ever, and give credit to all! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. NOTE: Freeze the extra loaf, or better yet, giftwrap it as a special St. Patrick's Day greeting.

Dear Editor,

The Lion and the Lamb It is said that if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. The month of March, in our neck of the woods, came in like a lion rather than a lamb. John, the beloved of the Lord had a vision of the Lion and the Lamb while exiled to the Isle of Patmos. From that vision, he wrote the book of Revelation. In Revelation chapter 5, he wept because no one was found worthy to take the seven-sealed book and open the seals that would reveal God’s plan for the end-times. One of the elders said, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll . . . But when John turned expecting to see a lion, he saw, ‘A lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne.’” (Revelation 5:5-14) All the angels and saints in heaven worshipped the Lamb. As you march into a New Year, behold the One who is the Lion and the Lamb. As you wait upon Him and worship, the wind of the Holy

Spirit will propel you into a new vitality, a new vision with new values, and new victories. BEHOLD THE LION. When John turned expecting to see a Lion, he saw a Lamb who had triumphed. The prophets foretold that the Messiah who would reign as king, He would be from the Jewish tribe of Judah. So, He was called the Lion of Judah. As the lion is referred to as the king of the jungle, the lion speaks of Jesus’ majesty and ruler-ship. When Jesus was arrested, and brought to trial before Pilate, the governor asked him, “’Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied.” (Matthew 27:11) When Jesus was crucified, “Above his head they placed the written charge against him: ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” (Matthew 27:37) Jesus triumphed over death, hell, and the grave when
He arose on the third day. “He ascended on high. He led captivity captive. He gave gifts unto men.” (Psalm 68:17-18; Ephesians 4:8) As you wait before the Lion of Judah receive your marching orders from the king, don’t get your marching orders from anyone else and, certainly don’t write your own. Obey the king and you will be blessed. (Luke 11:27-28) As some have said, “Either He is Lord of all or not at all.” BEHOLD THE LAMB. When John turned to see the Lion, he saw a lamb, having been slain. (Revelation 5:6) Isaiah prophesied of a suffering servant, the sacrificial lamb, whose blood would make atonement for sin. (Isaiah 53) When John stood baptizing in the Jordan River, he saw Jesus and announced, “Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) All of heaven will sing a new song, “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain and with your blood, you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language
and people and nation.” (Revelation 5:8-18) One of the most often used titles for Jesus in the book of Revelation is the Lamb. “For the Lamb, at the center of the throne, will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water.” (Revelation 7:9, 17) Worship the Lamb of God. At the end of the Gre at Tr i bu l at i on period, you can have a part in the wonderful Marriage Supper of the Lamb that signifies and seals the church in union with Christ. “’Hallelujah! For our Lord God, Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad . . . For the wedding of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready.’ Fine linen, bright and clean, was given to her to wear.” (Revelation 19:6-9) Are you ready? The Lion, who is the Lamb, shall soon march onto center stage and rule the world from the throne of David. Every knee shall bow. Get your marching orders from Him who is the Lion and the Lamb.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The adventurous Aries won’t be disappointed with taking on a new challenge, despite some initial misgivings. Look for this move to open other opportunities down the line. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Let that beautiful Bovine smile not only put you at ease, but also show that you’re ready, willing and more than able to confound the naysayers around you. A new admirer has important news. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful how you handle a relationship that you’re hoping to save. You already have the facts on your side. Avoid weakening your position by embellishing it with unnecessary dramatics. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking definitive stands isn’t easy for the often-wavering Moon Child. But you not only need to stay with your decision, but also reassure others it was the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As a proud Lion, you’re right to be upset about those who might be lying about you to others. But the best revenge is proving them wrong by succeeding at what you set out to do. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a “promising” project. Look for the facts behind the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones. you deal with an upsetting event. Use this as a learning experience that will help you avoid similar problems in the future. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it’s well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to make new friends as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New ventures continue to be favored. And with your self-confidence rising all the time, you’ll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time for the usually “serious-minded” Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary.
