Sixty days in and a week it will be! It will be huge! In the News: (1) North Korea and Tillerson's tour (2) CBO report (3) Healthcare vote Thursday? (4) President's budget cuts (5) FBI Director Comey to Congress (6) Supreme Court Nominee Gorsuch confirmation (7) California school bans tag First up, North Korea and Tillerson. North Korea inches one step closer to a nuclear option, and how does America respond? Just give the microphone to the Secretary of State. Rex Tillerson's tour to the Far East went just as I expected. No B.S. While in Seoul, South Korea, he said, "A military response would be 'on the table' if they [North Korea] took action to threaten South Korea and U.S. forces." And, regarding North Korea's disregard of U.N. sanctions, which continue because of lack of action by the world, Tillerson said, "The policy of U.S. 'strategic patience' has ended." Tillerson says a lot with a few words. On a separate note, he remarked that he does not take the press corps in the plane with him to save money, but also because as a former businessman, he always spent the time on the plane to get work done in a quiet atmosphere. You've got to respect his work ethic. Speaking of work ethics, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) came out with their "Healthcare Comparison Report." The CBO worked only on part of the big picture, the new Healthcare plan over 10 years vs. the current Obamacare. They somehow forgot that the current plan with its mandates cannot last much longer... Insurance companies pulling out, only one provider in many counties throughout the U.S., increasing costs of healthcare premiums, and larger healthcare deductibles. The talked about report

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

says 14 million-plus people will lose healthcare. What they didn't say is many of those are people who don't want to buy healthcare, but were forced (mandated) by the government (Obamacare) to buy, and had to buy parts of insurance they didn't need or couldn't use. Why didn't they compare an old beat up car on its last legs to any new car that will last and work for you for the next ten years! How many people lose healthcare with Obamacare in the next ten years? 14 million, 24 million or 100 million-plus (everyone on it now). Up next, the Healthcare vote on Thursday this week? President Trump is on track for his three step plan: Healthcare reform first, tax reform second, and an infrastructure plan this fall. Personally I believe the Healthcare plan will pass the House this Thursday. More tweaking will happen in the next few days, so the Republicans will be assured of a majority. Perhaps even a few Democrats (election in 2018) will sign on to appease their folks back home. Speaker of the House Ryan looked and sounded confident on Meet the Press on Sunday. He feels the new Congress is finally starting to legislate, a term very unfamiliar in the last several years. He praised Donald Trump on his ability to help broker deals. I guess Trump should know something about the art of the deal. Ryan also spoke about Trump's budget plan. He first noted that this is for discretionary spending that is only 25% of the total budget. The other 75% is mandatory spending, including all entitlements, social security payments, etc. He said Trump is doing exactly what he ran on: Beef up the military, security, etc., while making dollars spent more cost efficient throughout the government. Trump, as a businessman, is taking action on duplicated services in all departments and creating some public / private partnerships to stretch dollars.

Be cautious of fearmongers. For example, the 3% cut in "Meals on Wheels" will not take food away from everyone. It will force the program to run more effectively by finding budget cuts of 3%. Other departments will have to do the same, including the military. Like we all have said for years and years, including our legislators, let's get rid of the waste. Finally, someone is doing something about it! Not business as usual, bloating, overweight bills to satisfy lobbyists and special interests! Next up, Director Comey comes before Congress on Monday, after this column is written. But what can Comey say? He must walk a tightrope on national security issues. He can't talk about an ongoing investigation. He can't give away FBI secrets to the world. I don't expect a bombshell that others are hoping for, although I expect the lame stream media to twist what he says. Should any evidence of impropriety be found, the next long step is to prove that evidence in court. And speaking of court... Supreme Court nominee Gorsuch's nomination hearings start Thursday. As many are saying, perhaps a smooth sailing through the Senate on this choice. The battle will be on the next appointment to the Court. And finally, a grade school in Folsom, California bans tag! Citing the potential for harm, they felt this was the best choice to handle "rough" students. Where is our country headed when schools can ban "child's play." Next up, if they haven't been banned yet, are kickball, slides, swings, and hopscotch and marbles, too, but I think the last two were quietly banned, or am I just showing my age! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Welcome to the Rock It really made no sense at all. How could one of the greatest left fielders of all-time, one of the great base stealers in history (first all-time in efficiency, fifth all-time base stealer) and a seven-time All-Star be ignored for two decades by the powers that be, those baseball writers who hold the keys to Cooperstown. But there it was before me in the paper that midJanuary morning ... Raines had finally been elected and I, who have written about Raines' merits ad nauseam in this column, was set free. The fact that the Baseball Writers' Association of America also took two of my other pro bono cases in Jeff B a g w e l l a n d Iv a n Rodriguez made things only that much sweeter. Then I had another question: What took them so long? Bagwell and Rodriguez were painted with the steroid scandal tar brush, and that was the sole reason why they had to wait for induction. Apparently, the unwritten rule for the BBWAA is that admitted or indicted steroid abusers (Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro, for instance) are to be banned; those who are suspected or gossiped about will have to wait a ballot or two to think about their sins in what is baseball's version of purgatory. Now they are spotless, enshrined forever in upstate New York. Raines, for historical reasons, will more than likely be remembered for two things: cocaine and collusion. The standout, superstar high-school athlete out of Sanford,

3A

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area

Florida, flush with money for the first time in his life, decided to spend it on drugs ... cocaine, specifically. During the infamous Pittsburgh drug trials in 1985, Raines copped to the fact that he played many games high on coke, did coke in the clubhouse during games and even developed his head-first slide in order to protect the eight ball he had in his back pocket. The next year, he won the batting title, only the third switch hitter in

history to do so. He led the league in on-base percentage (.413) and times on base (274). After that season, he was a free agent. The only clubs that showed any interest were ... none of them. Instead of the sound of ch-ching, he got the sleepy melody of crickets. Why? Because the owners of the league colluded together in order to keep salaries down. Raines was re-signed to the Expos, missing out on the lucrative New York Yankee contract everyone thought he had coming his way. Can you imagine that? An outfield consisting of Tim Raines, Rickey Henderson and Dave Winfield? With Billy Martin managing Raines and Henderson to boot? That would have been a sight to see. But Raines will be best remembered for being one

The 3B’s Book Exchange

of the premier players of not only his era, but alltime. Bill James ranks him as the 40th greatest position player of all-time. The record books remember him, too. He's remembered for having an

uncanny knack to win ballgames with grand slams and triples. One also could point to his victory over drugs and the sportsmanlike conduct he displayed during his career. Tim Raines, the "Rock"

The site also contains information on white-tailed deer st a kehol d e r g roup s (hunters, landowners, wildlife watchers and more), how deer hunting regulations are set, and deer depredation and deer p opu l at i on c ont ro l permits. Scientific research activities related to deer and deer hunting are also presented. Several features of the site will, for the first time, provide users with levels of information previously unavailable. Users will have access to a searchable database of deer-vehicle accidents, and will be able to plot accidents on a state road map by year (20022012), month and day. A second searchable database will allow users

to search IDNR annual deer harvest data and Illinois Department of Transportation annual deer-vehicle accident (DVA) rate data. The user may select the county and a range of years (from 1989 to the present), and view an image displaying both the total deer harvest and annual DVA information. White-tailed Deer Illinois also features an online form for reporting sick and diseased deer. This process will greatly speed the collection and tracking of potential incidence of Epizo ot ic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Information collected from hunters and landowners during this review process will be used to finalize the website, with release to the public anticipated to occur by April 1, 2017.

Pets Help Forge Community Ties DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: I recently graduated from college and took a job in a brandnew city. The area is great, but I feel lonely most of the time and haven't really met anyone I can hang out with regularly. A colleague at work laughingly suggested that I get a dog. Although it was meant to be a joke, I'm kind of considering it. Should I get a dog, or is it a bad idea to have one in the city? — Kurt H., Somerville, Massachusetts DE A R K U RT: It sounds like a great option. Of course, as a pet-care adviser, I'm a little bit partial to the idea. But I also can tell you that pets not only enrich our lives, but

enrich the lives of our neighbors in subtle ways, too. A new study reported in Scientific American found that people with pets are more likely to get to know other people in the neighborhood, and those relationships have more substance than casual "hellos." List the pros and cons of owning a pet. Do you have the time to care for and train a dog? Do you have roommates, and are they OK with having a pet in your apartment? What additional costs are involved — food, veterinary care, licensing, training, apartment pet fees and so on? What size and breed of dog is best for your living space? Lifehacker has a very comprehensive guide to considering, deciding and then bringing a dog home. Also, should you decide to get a dog, I hope you'll consider adopting from a local shelter. Many great dogs are waiting for just the right owner to find them.

Cooking For The Birds Southern Cooking this week is going to the birds! At our household we've always enjoyed watching the birds, but I learned early on to attract a variety and to help them through, especially during the winter months when you really need to feed them. I buy bird feed but I also enjoy mixing different ingredients to create food for the birds. The goal is to mix up items that are packed with protein, calories, vitamins, and minerals that birds need. Below are just a few of the many recipes I've used. But don't hesitate to use your own ingredients.

Basic Bird Cakes Bird cakes can be offered whole in a mesh bag or suet feeder, or crumbled and scattered on the ground. 2 cups suet 2 cups peanut butter

2 cups cornmeal

Melt suet in saucepan. Mix in peanut butter and cornmeal. Spoon mixture into muffin cups and cool.

This is a special treat for summer birds. Chop up and mix an assortment of fresh and dried fruits and berries. Put the mixture out for the birds in an empty grapefruit or orange half. Birds seem to particularly enjoy apples, bananas, figs, dates, raisins, blueberries, strawberries and cherries. For a special treat, serve the fruit in a halved coconut. Use your imagination.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Harvest All 12 months of the year, farmers think about, plan, and work for the harvest. They expect, execute, and are excited about the harvest. The first mass-produced harvesting or combine machines were made in Independence, MO — the Gleaner. A popular make of combine that I like is the International Harvester. Jesus taught a lot about the international harvest of souls and gave his disciples the Great Commission. (Matthew 28:18-20) He described the ripened harvest field, “Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s four months until the harvest?’ I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal souls, so the sower and the reaper may be glad together.” (John 4:34-38) Consider and apply some of the aspects of harvest taught by Jesus HARVEST IS ABOUT PEOPLE. In John chapter 4, Jesus intentionally engaged a woman, who had a soul thirst, in conversation at a well. When the disciples returned with lunch, they couldn’t understand why Jesus wasn’t hungry. Jesus

1. Is the book of Ezekiel in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. Who/what does "their eyes stand out with fatness" refer to in Psalms 73? Demons, Wicked rich, Serpents, Unholy

replied, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” (John 4:34) What is God’s work? The salvation of souls as revealed in John 3:16. It is an international harvest! “You are worthy . . . because you were slain and with your blood you purchased for God people from every tribe and language and people and nation.” (Revelation 5:9-10) HARVEST C ONTRIBUTING FACTORS. A good harvest depends on such factors as the seed, the condition of the soil, the right amount of rain and sun, and the workers. Jesus taught parables concerning these essential factors. The certified seed is the gospel. We have the promise of harvest, if we are diligent. (Psalm 126) But the end result is in God’s hand. “One plants, one waters, but God gives the increase.” (I Corinthians 3:6-8) HARVEST IS RIPE AND READY TO REAP.

Jesus explains the need and presses on us the sense of urgency. (John 4:35) Harvest has a small window for action or it will be ruined. HARVEST NEEDS WORKERS. Jesus said that the laborers are few. (Luke 10:1-2) But he said that we can do something about it. “Pray, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.” Jesus taught parables concerning those who were idle and unconcerned. (Matthew 20:3) It doesn’t matter if a farmer has an old Gleaner or a new International Harvester combine; what matters is, does it work? A young couple came to my son’s church for marriage counseling. They heard the gospel of Christ, were delivered from drugs, baptized in water, were married, and began attending church with their two daughters. At a youth convention, the two daughters said that God had called them to missions, to take the Good News of Christ to the world. This is the work of the harvest. HARVESTERS RECEIVE WAGES. Salvation is through grace by faith alone. But Jesus emphasized this fact, “And he that reaps re-

ceives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life” (John 4:36) John Bavier teaches in his book “Driven by Eternity” that what you do for Christ will determine your reward as we stand before the judgement seat of Christ. Western Christians look mostly on this earthly life for fulfillment and reward. Christians in other countries understand and are driven by the scriptural teaching of rewards in heaven for eternity. What kind of wages will you receive from the Lord of the harvest? HARVEST ’S EMPOWERMENT. The Good News is that we need not rely on our own ability to bring in the harvest of souls, but the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). In Luke 10 we can learn some principles to help us reap a harvest; such as partnering with others, faith, signs and wonders, repentance, not taking offense at rejection, the power of Jesus’ name, and the joy in the Holy Spirit. Be prepared for a great end-time harvest. The King is coming! Are you ready? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • It was award-winning American author Ann Patchett who made the following sage observation: "The question is whether or not you choose to disturb the world around you, or if you choose to let it go on as if you had never arrived • In 1861, when a group of Unionist counties decided they didn't want to be part of Virginia any

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good time to reassess important relationships, both personal and professional, to see where problems might exist and how they can be overcome. Keep communication lines open. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s not easy to bring order to a chaotic situation, whether it’s in the workplace or at home. But if anyone can do it, you can. A pleasant surprise awaits you by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful that you don’t make an upcoming decision solely on the word of those who might have their own reasons for wanting you to act as they suggest. Check things out for yourself. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A personal relationship that seems to be going nowhere could be restarted once you know why it stalled. An honest discussion could result in some surprising revelations. LEO (July 23 to August 22) That unexpected attack of self-doubt could be a way of warning yourself to go slow before making a career-changing decision. Take more time to do a closer study of the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A workplace problem needs your attention, now, before it deteriorates to a point beyond repair. A trusted third party could be helpful in closing the gaps that have opened. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent family situation could give rise to a new problem. Keep an open

mind and avoid making judgments about anyone’s motives until all the facts are in. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Rely on your always-sharp intuition to alert you to potential problems with someone’s attempt to explain away the circumstances behind a puzzling incident. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although you still need to do some snipping of those lingering loose ends from a past project, you can begin moving on to something else. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your self-confidence levels rising, you should feel quite comfortable with agreeing to take on a possibly troublesome, but potentially well-rewarded, situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is favored, both for business and for fun. The end of the week brings news about an upcoming project that could lead toward that promised career change. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might feel suddenly overwhelmed by a flood of responsibilities. But if you deal with each one in its turn, you’ll soon be able to hold your head above water and move on. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful way of offering comfort as well as guidance. more, West Virginia became the only state formed by breaking away from a Confederate state. plans for the would-be state of Nickajack never came to fruition. • Are you a coddiwompler? You are if you sometimes travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown destination. • At the time of its completion in 1885, the Washington Monument, at 555 feet, was the tallest building in the world. The cornerstone had been laid on July 4, 1848, but insufficient funds and other interruptions repeatedly delayed the work. When the monument finally opened to the public in October 1888, visitors could take a 10-minute steam-powered elevator

ride to the top. During the last 12 years of the 19th century, more than 1.5 million people visited. • Hibernation doesn't always happen in cold weather; warm-weather hibernation, known as estivation, is common among some species of lizards, turtles and snails. How to find the right replacement windows

R

eplacing old windows is often a worthwhile investment for homeowners. Energy-efficient windows can prevent heating and cooling loss and keep homes more comfortable throughout the year. Such windows also can improve a home’s resale value, proving a good return on investment for homeowners who want to upgrade their homes before putting them on the market. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, homeowners might find it more cost-effective to replace very old and/or inefficient windows to improve their energy efficiency. Such an upgrade can save homeowners substantial amounts of money on heating and cooling costs. Window replacement projects can be costly, so it pays to get the job right the first time. Before beginning a window replacement project, homeowners should research which windows will meet

they currently have. But the problems that led to the need to replace windows may still exist even when new windows are installed. When replacing windows, consider energy performance ratings based on the locations of the windows in the house. To make sure they make the most educated decision, homeowners can investigate the solar heat gain coefficient, U-factor, visible transmittance and light-tosolar gain. Explanations of these ratings are available at Energy.gov.

their specific needs, learning the subtleties between finishes and features, as well as comparing prices for the windows and installation. Choose the right time of year The best time of year to plan window replacement is when the weather will be warm, ideally in the spring or early summer. However, homeowners do not want

conditions to be too warm, as each room where new windows will be installed will temporarily be exposed to the elements. Furthermore, caulk adheres better in warmer weather and will dispense easily. Consider available features When replacing windows, homeowners may want to install the same style windows

Don’t ignore maintenance needs Maintenance costs involved with cleaning, repairs and painting can add up. When shopping for windows, consider the amount of maintenance they will need. Wood-framed windows may require more upkeep than aluminum, fiberglass or vinyl. Also, consider if certain window types, such as doublehung windows, casement

windows, awning windows, or slider windows, would be practical. Keep home style in mind A poor match between windows and the style of the home can produce unwanted changes in the appearance of the home. Replacement windows should match the style and appearance desired. Expect minimal disruption When homeowners hire professionals who are good at their craft, window replacement projects should not be a terrible inconvenience. According to American Window Products, Inc., seasoned professionals will be able to complete a replacement window upgrade in a short amount of time depending on the size of the home and the number of windows being replaced. Replacing windows can be a costly task, but one that will provide a more energy efficient home that can help homeowners save money in the long run.

he real estate market will always have its ups and downs, but real estate is an oft-profitable investment. Real estate investors do their investing for various reasons. Some see a house as a place to hang their hats for years and years, while others look at properties as nothing more than investments. Buying a home with the intent to fix it up and resell it is called a “fix and flip.” In such situations, investors buy homes at below-market prices before refurbishing the homes with the goal of recouping their initial investment and then some when the homes are ultimately put back on the market. Flipping has become popular for both expert remodelers and novice investors. RealtyTrac®, the nation’s leading source for comprehensive housing data, noted in its “Year-End and Q4 2015 U.S. Home Flipping” report that 5.5 percent of all single family home and condo sales during the year were flipped properties. This marked an increase from the same time the previous year. Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to quickly become a money pit. Before purchasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine if this fits with your budget or not. You do not want to invest so much that it exceeds what you could feasibly recoup when it comes time to sell. Overlook cosmetic things when visiting properties. Cosmetic issues include all of the easily replaceable items in a home, such as carpeting,

appliances, interior paint colors and cabinetry. Focus on the bones of the house — the architectural integrity and those little touches that you envision having a “wow” factor. Seek the help of experts. Some flippers think they’ll save the most money by doing all of the work themselves. This isn’t always the case. Professional architects, designers and contractors may help you save money. Contractors have an intimate knowledge of where to buy materials and may be able to negotiate prices based on wholesale or trade costs. In addition, experts can help you avoid common pitfalls because they’ve already done this type of work time and again. It’s smart to rely on expert advice, even if it means investing a little bit more. Save money by doing some work yourself. While the pros may tackle the more complex parts of a given project, such as rewiring electricity or changing the footprint of a home, you can still be involved. Ask to participate in demolition, such as taking down walls or removing old materials from the home. Such participation may be fun, and it can save you substantial amounts of money on labor. Recognize that not everything must be completely redone. Realize that, in some instances, a coat of paint and some new accents may be all you need to transform a space. For example, if kitchen cabinets are in good condition, see if they can be refaced or painted instead of replaced entirely. Install new door pulls/handles to add visual interest. Look for some ready-made items, such as bookshelves, instead of installing custom carpentry. Think about what the buyer wants and not what you want. Renovate with an eye toward prospective buyers’ needs. Keep things neutral and accommodating. Research the latest trends to understand what buyers might be seeking in a home. You want potential buyers to envision themselves moving right in. Renovating a fixer-upper takes time, but it can be a worthwhile project, and one that can help anyone turn a profit in a booming real estate market.

Create drama with bold paint colors

Did you know? Just like certain exercises, home improvement projects may involve heavy lifting, bending, moving, and stretching. After spending much of the winter indoors and largely sedentary, some homeowners may be tempted to jump into projects with gusto when the warm weather returns. But that can be a recipe for injury that can sideline DIYers for a while. Instead, homeowners can start slowly and then gradually work longer hours, just as they might do when returning to exercise after some time off. Homeowners can see how their muscles feel after an hour or two while not concentrating on one task for too long. Homeowners who vary the tasks they tackle will use different muscle groups, which can reduce strain and limit injury risk. Whenever possible, opt for ergonomic tools that can reduce users’ risk of repetitive stress injuries.

P

ainting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. Paint colors can dramatically change the mood and the design of a home. And depending on a homeowner’s goals, paint can make a statement or blend into the background. Many people are now looking to bold colors to make spaces stand out. But choosing a paint color can be challenging. Homeowners looking to update walls and complement decor may want to look at some of the more impactful colors that Pantone indicates will be popular for the 2017 season. Primrose Yellow, Lapis Blue, Flame, Pink Yarrow, and Greenery are some of the more eye-catching selections. Once colors are selected, consider these guidelines for using bolder colors in room designs. Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim. Try bold in a small space. Many people are surprised at how well bold colors work in small spaces. Powder rooms can be an ideal spot to experiment with paint colors. Try deep colors that can make the area seem intimate and even exotic.

Dark, bold hues can be toned down by different accents, such as neutral colored fixtures and towels. Go bold in the kitchen. Incorporate a splash of color in the kitchen without going overboard. Try an appliance or design fixture in a bright shade. Or paint the inside of the cabinets in your favorite color and install glass inserts in the cabinet doors so that everyone gets a peek of the color beyond. A neutral kitchen also can be brightened up with the use of silverware, dishes, pots and pans, and other kitchen items featured in bold hues. Stick to boldness on interchangeable items. Those who like to experiment with color may find that they like to switch out the colors now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out color that much easier. For example, replace area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. Paint over terra cotta flower pots when the mood strikes. Establish balance. Rely on neutral furniture, rugs, moldings and baseboards if you decide to take bold colors up a notch. This will help create a sense of balance in the room. Painting is a fun way to experiment with color. Many homeowners are not hesitant to use bold shades of color when they learn the right techniques. And because paint is an inexpensive option for making over a room, homeowners who find they do not like a particular color can easily paint over it with a new color.

ome improvements can add value and aesthetic appeal to a home. However, to reap the rewards of a remodeled room, home addition or any home improvement project, homeowners will have to invest both their money and their time. Establishing a project budget can be helpful and prevent overspending. According to Visually, a marketing information service, nearly half of the homeowners surveyed said the cost of their renovation projects did not exceed their budgets.

However, more than one-third of those surveyed reported going over budget on their projects. To keep costs down, consider hiring a contractor. He or she will have industry contacts and may be able to get materials at a lower cost. While you will pay for labor, working with a contractor greatly reduces both the time spent on the project and the risk of costly mistakes being made. In addition, think about the way you finance the renovations. Industry experts have found that homeowners who finance their home improvement projects with lines of credit end up spending more money on average than those who use their savings to fund projects. While it may be tempting to take out a line of credit for a home improvement project, spending only money you already have may be the more responsible route to take.

Did you know? Many homeowners have lofty goals for their homes. Such plans may include extensive renovations or even additions. While many of these projects create beautiful changes in a home, it’s important to consider the impact that renovations can have on property value before beginning a project. Many home improvement projects do not add as much value as homeowners may think they do. In fact, some homeowners “overbuild” for their neighborhoods. This means the amount of money invested in improvements can likely never be recuperated because the house value simply exceeds those around it by too much money. To avoid overbuilding, homeowners can ask themselves several questions before beginning a renovation project.

Will my house be the largest house in the neighborhood? Larger homes tend to have a lower price per square foot, so you may not want to improve to this extent. Will the house blend with others in the area? If your house will stick out like a sore thumb, it will detract from its own value and could impact the value of other homes in the area. Have I examined the cost vs. value of the project? Many home improvement resources analyze the cost of a project versus the overall value of that project with regard to property value. For example, a $100,000 basement remodel may not add $100,000 to the value of the home in the event you choose to sell down the line. It’s important to know which projects provide the best return on investment.

How to treat a termite problem

T

ermites are houseguests few homeowners want to experience. With their reputation for voracity and the damage they can inflict on a home, termites are something most people want to avoid at all costs. If termites are already a problem or something homeowners simply want to prevent, there are effective ways to banish these unwelcome guests or keep them from ever entering a home. What is a termite? Termites are small social insects that have the capability to destroy wood. Sometimes they are mistaken for ants, but the two insects are quite different. Termites are actually close relatives to the cockroach. Many termites appear as white or lightcolored and may seem translucent. Winged termites are darker in color.

Termites have a grub-shaped body but, unlike ants, no discernable hourglassshaped waist. Also, their antennae are straight and look beaded, like a string of pearls, while ants have elbowed antennae. Another way to differentiate ants from termites is that termite eyes are very small or nonexistent, while ants’ eyes are clearly visible. Termites live in a nest or colony in large numbers. Their primary food source is plant fiber, known as cellulose. Most termites are rarely seen unless they are swarming or if their nest or a portion of wood has been opened revealing the insects inside. Treating termites Many people do not even know they have a termite problem until that problem has escalated. Because they remain hidden most of the time, termites can be difficult to detect. Incidences of soft wood or visual recognition of swarming termites that occur in the spring can indicate that termites could be residing in a structure or nearby. There are different types of termites, and proper identification is necessary to find the correct treatment option.

UP TO

Unlike other pests, termites are pests whose detection and removal is best left to a professional who can recognize the subtle signs. He or she will identify certain signs of an infestation, such as mud-looking material on wooden surfaces, discarded wings from a swarm, piles of sawdust, termite tubes running outdoors from the soil to a home, buckling paint, and other indications. There are different ways to prevent or treat a termite infestation. To prevent termites, there are applications of termiticides that are put into the soil surrounding a home or structure. Also, removal of moisture in and around the house is key because termites need moist conditions for survival. Poisoning of nests is also a treatment option. If termites already have infiltrated a home, fumigation may be necessary to remedy that problem. However, fumigation is not always effective at killing eggs and all of the termites. Most exterminators will use a combination of treatments to rid a home of termites. If extreme wood damage has occurred, portions of the structure may have to be removed and rebuilt. This also may help alleviate some of the scent trails termites use to travel to and from nests and food sources. Other termite prevention tips There are other tactics to prevent a termite problem. * Don’t store firewood in contact with the ground. * Use chemically treated wood for building structures.

Plants and gardens touching exterior walls of the home may provide the right environment for a termite colony.

* Disguise wood by painting it or using a shellac or varnish. Termites may not like the taste of treated wood. * Prevent hidden entry points where termites can go unseen. * Remove cardboard, newspaper, cotton materials and any other cellulose from the floor. * Vent kitchens and baths so that they will not trap moisture. * Fix any and all water leaks. * Don’t plant gardens or put soil directly against a home’s exterior walls. Some simple precautions and a routine inspection can prevent termites from becoming a problem.

Spring swimming pool installation tips

N

ow that the weather is warming up, many homeowners’ thoughts are drifting toward relaxing days spent soaking up some sun by the pool. Early spring is a great time to install a pool so the family has a go-to hangout by the time summer arrives. Installing a pool is a large financial investment, and homeowners considering adding a pool should not take that decision lightly. When attempting to determine if a pool is for them, homeowners may want to ask themselves the following questions. Is my yard suitable for a pool? Some yards may not be large enough for pools, while others may not meet the zoning requirements set forth by the town. Still other yards may have soil that’s not suitable for putting in an inground pool, or may have a high water table that can delay construction. What is the average weather? Will a pool be enjoyed enough to warrant the cost? Homeowners who live in areas that get many hot days will

likely get their money’s worth. But if the climate suggests that a pool will sit unused more often than not, perhaps a pool is not the best investment. Can we afford it? A pool can range from a few hundred dollars for inflatable or selfinstalling models to many thousands for elaborate inground designs. Your budget will dictate which type of pool you can afford to install. How will we use the pool? Decide if you’re putting in a pool for the kids, to entertain the family or to make an architectural statement in the yard. Having a clear sense of purpose will help to guide the decision-making process.

40TH ANNIVERSARY

Who will maintain the pool? Many homeowners tackle the dayto-day maintenance required to keep their pools clean and safe. Others hire pool cleaners to maintain their pools and ensure the water is properly balanced. Maintenance can cost additional money, so consider this potential cost when determining if a pool is for you. Are there any safety concerns? Parents of young children may be hesitant to install a pool, but today’s pool installation codes consider many of the potential hazards of a pool and attempt to eliminate them. Fences surrounding inground pools with self-locking gates, as well as locking ladders for aboveground pools can eliminate accidental falls into unattended pools. Your municipality will have a list of requirements for pools, so peruse the list prior to making your final decision. If the decision has been made to move ahead with a pool, it can be helpful to understand a few facts about

the process of installing a pool. Always work with a pool-installation company that has earned positive reviews and has a stellar record of service. While this does not guarantee that the job will not encounter problems, contractors with glowing reviews tend to have earned those reviews. Read reviews from unbiased, online customers as well as any friends or family members who have used a particular pool company. It’s important that homeowners recognize that the installation of a pool may require some heavy machinery, which can damage lawns. Fence panels may have to be removed to let in excavation equipment. Sand, soil backfill or gravel may be needed to level out a landscape, and things may get noisy and messy when the installation hits full swing. Some homeowners can handle installing above-ground pools on their own, but less DIY-savvy homeowners may want to leave the installation to a professional installer to ensure the job is done right. Always secure the proper permits and inspections prior to using the pool. This not only ensures the safety of swimmers, but also guarantees the pool is legal. Backyard swimming pools make for an enjoyable place to congregate when the weather is hot. Follow a few guidelines and ask the necessary questions to make a pool installation go more smoothly.
