Welcome to the Rock It really made no sense at all. How could one of the greatest left fielders of alltime, one of the great base stealers in history (first alltime in efficiency, fifth alltime base stealer) and a seventime All-Star be ignored for two decades by the powers that be, those baseball writers who hold the keys to Cooperstown. But there it was before me in the paper that mid-January morning ... Raines had finally been elected and I, who have written about Raines' merits ad nauseam in this column, was set free. The fact that the Baseball Writers' Association of America also took two of my other pro bono cases in Jef f Bag well and Ivan Rodriguez made things only that much sweeter. Then I had another question: What took them so long? Bagwell and Rodriguez were painted with the steroid scandal tar brush, and that was the sole reason why they had to wait for induction. Apparently, the unwritten rule

for the BBWAA is that admitted or indicted steroid abusers (Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro, for instance) are to be banned; those who are suspected or gossiped about will have to wait a ballot or two to think about their sins in what is baseball's version of purgatory. Now they are spotless, enshrined forever in upstate New York. Raines, for historical reasons, will more than likely be remembered for two things: cocaine and collusion. The standout, superstar highschool athlete out of Sanford, Florida, flush with money for the first time in his life, decided to spend it on drugs ... cocaine, specifically. During the infamous Pittsburgh drug trials in 1985, Raines copped to the fact that he played many games high on coke, did coke in the clubhouse during games and even developed his headfirst slide in order to protect the eight ball he had in his back pocket. The next year, he won the batting title, only the third switch hitter in history to do
so. He led the league in on-base percentage (.413) and times on base (274). After that season, he was a free agent. The only clubs that showed any interest were ... none of them. Instead of the sound of ch-ching, he got the sleepy melody of crickets. Why? Because the owners of the league colluded together in order to keep salaries down. Raines was re-signed to the Expos, missing out on the lucrative New York Yankee contract everyone thought he had coming his way. Can you imagine that? An outfield consisting of Tim Raines, Rickey Henderson and Dave Winfield? With Billy Martin manag i ng R ai ne s and Henderson to boot? That would have been a sight to see. But Raines will be best remembered for being one of the premier players of not only his era, but all-time. Bill James ranks him as the 40th greatest position player of all-time. The record books remember him, too. He's remembered for having an uncanny knack to win ballgames with grand slams and triples. One also could point to his victory over drugs and the sportsmanlike conduct he displayed during his career. Tim Raines, the "Rock" before there was a "Rock," welcome to the Hall of Fame. FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTION/RECHARGE PROGRAM The Washington County Farm Bureau Young Leader and Women's Committees are offering free inspections of fire extinguishers and reduced/subsidized fees to have them recharged and/ or replaced as required. They are partnering with Albers Fire Protection Equipment (from Beckemeyer) for an on-site event at the Farm Bureau office in Nashville from 1-5 p.m. on Thursday, March 23. They invite Washington County farmers to bring in their fire extinguishers to be inspected during this time. Necessary recharges or other services will be
c ompl e te d ove r t h e we ekend, w it h your extinguisher(s) available for pickup at the Farm Bureau office on the week of March 27. Everyone that participates in the program will also be entered in a drawing for a free fire extinguisher or two as well. 24TH ANNUAL EGGSTRAVAGANZA The undisputed home of Mr. E. Bunny, the small village of Oakdale, Illinois has big plans for the Easter holiday. Saturday, April 8 marks the 24th anniversary of the annual Oakdale Eggstravaganza at which visitors can pull back the curtain and tour the Easter Egg Factory where E. Bunny creates the magic of Easter. The 24th Annual Eggstravaganza will begin with its traditional fellowship service at 9 a.m. at the Un ite d Pre s by te r i an Church followed by a day of food, fun, contests and family-friendly activities.
Easter Egg Factory tours will begin at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. where those in attendance can โstroll the wood-chipped path through the woods, across bridges, past jellybean and marshmallow trees,โ to get a glimpse of where E. Bunny creates his magic. Admission for the tour is $2. During the tour hours, a petting zoo will be available for a $2 fee and N.C. Pries Implements Inc., will be hosting free kiddie train rides. IDNR TO TEST-LAUNCH NEW WHITE-TAILED DEER WEBSITE White-tailed deer are an integral part of the Illinois landscape, and a new website will provide up-todate information on deer biology, management, research and regulations. A random set of Illinois deer hunters and landowners will receive an e-mail invitation this week to assist with finalizing the new White-Tailed Deer Illinois website. White-tailed Deer Illinois is a collaborative effort led by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Wildlife Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration, and the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center. Funding for the White-tailed Deer Illinois website was made available through Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Project W-147-T.

Sixty days in and a week it will be! It will be huge! In the News: (1) North Korea and Tillerson's tour (2) CBO report (3) Healthcare vote Thursday? (4) President's budget cuts (5) FBI Director Comey to Congress (6) Supreme Court Nominee Gorsuch confirmation (7) California school bans tag First up, North Korea and Tillerson. North Korea inches one step closer to a nuclear option, and how does America respond? Just give the microphone to the Secretary of State. Rex Tillerson's tour to the Far East went just as I expected. No B.S. While in Seoul, South Korea, he said, "A military response would be 'on the table' if they [North Korea] took action to threaten South Korea and U.S. forces." And, regarding North Korea's disregard of U.N. sanctions, which continue because of lack of action by the world, Tillerson said, "The policy of U.S. 'strategic patience' has ended." Tillerson says a lot with a few words. On a separate note, he remarked that he does not take the press corps in the plane with him to save money, but also because as a former businessman, he always spent the time on the plane to get work done in a quiet atmosphere. You've got to respect his work ethic. Speaking of work ethics, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) came out with their "Healthcare Comparison Report." The CBO worked only on part of the big picture, the new Healthcare plan over 10 years vs. the current Obamacare. They somehow forgot that the current plan with its mandates cannot last much longer... Insurance companies pulling out, only one provider in many counties throughout the U.S., increasing costs of healthcare premiums, and larger healthcare deductibles. The talked about report
says 14 million-plus people will lose healthcare. What they didn't say is many of those are people who don't want to buy healthcare, but were forced (mandated) by the government (Obamacare) to buy, and had to buy parts of insurance they didn't need or couldn't use. Why didn't they compare an old beat up car on its last legs to any new car that will last and work for you for the next ten years! How many people lose healthcare with Obamacare in the next ten years? 14 million, 24 million or 100 million-plus (everyone on it now). Up next, the Healthcare vote on Thursday this week? President Trump is on track for his three step plan: Healthcare reform first, tax reform second, and an infrastructure plan this fall. Personally I believe the Healthcare plan will pass the House this Thursday. More tweaking will happen in the next few days, so the Republicans will be assured of a majority. Perhaps even a few Democrats (election in 2018) will sign on to appease their folks back home. Speaker of the House Ryan looked and sounded confident on Meet the Press on Sunday. He feels the new Congress is finally starting to legislate, a term very unfamiliar in the last several years. He praised Donald Trump on his ability to help broker deals. I guess Trump should know something about the art of the deal. Ryan also spoke about Trump's budget plan. He first noted that this is for discretionary spending that is only 25% of the total budget. The other 75% is mandatory spending, including all entitlements, social security payments, etc. He said Trump is doing exactly what he ran on: Beef up the military, security, etc., while making dollars spent more cost efficient throughout the government. Trump, as a businessman, is taking action on duplicated services in all departments and creating some public / private partnerships to stretch dollars.
Be cautious of fearmongers. For example, the 3% cut in "Meals on Wheels" will not take food away from everyone. It will force the program to run more effectively by finding budget cuts of 3%. Other departments will have to do the same, including the military. Like we all have said for years and years, including our legislators, let's get rid of the waste. Finally, someone is doing something about it! Not business as usual, bloating, overweight bills to satisfy lobbyists and special interests! Next up, Director Comey comes before Congress on Monday, after this column is written. But what can Comey say? He must walk a tightrope on national security issues. He can't talk about an ongoing investigation. He can't give away FBI secrets to the world. I don't expect a bombshell that others are hoping for, although I expect the lame stream media to twist what he says. Should any evidence of impropriety be found, the next long step is to prove that evidence in court. And speaking of court... Supreme Court nominee Gorsuch's nomination hearings start Thursday. As many are saying, perhaps a smooth sailing through the Senate on this choice. The battle will be on the next appointment to the Court. And finally, a grade school in Folsom, California bans tag! Citing the potential for harm, they felt this was the best choice to handle "rough" students. Where is our country headed when schools can ban "child's play." Next up, if they haven't been banned yet, are kickball, slides, swings, and hopscotch and marbles, too, but I think the last two were quietly banned, or am I just showing my age! Until next week. MANDATED REPORTING SYMPOSIUM Nearly 200 professionals and volunteers attended the 4th Judicial Circuit Family Violence C oordinating C o u n c i l โs โ M a n d a t e d Reporting: Abuse and Neglect of Children, Older Adults and Persons with Disabilitiesโ Symposium, presented on March 1, 2017, at the Knights of C olu mbu s Ha l l i n Effingham. Associate Judge James Eder, Chair of the 4th Judicial Circuit FVCC, served as moderator of the program. Members of the 4th Circuit FVCC and Orr Law LLC assisted with facilitation of the training event. The morning session featured Deanna Large, the Administrator of the State Central Register, which includes the DCFS Child Abuse a n d Ne g l e c t Ho t l i n e . Mandated Reporters are required to call the Hotline when they suspect or have reasonable cause to believe that a child known to them in their professional or official capacity may be an abused or neglected child. The Illinois Child Abuse Hotline number is 1-800-25-ABUSE (1-800252-2873). The Hotline operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calling the Illinois Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline can make the biggest difference in the life of an
at-risk child. If the Hotline does not accept the report for investigation, mandated reporters may ask to speak with a Hotline supervisor and have the information reassessed. The afternoon session was presented by three persons dedicated to combating abuse of the elderly and disabled. Nancy Hinton, the Midland Area Agency on Aging Program Coordinator for Adult Protective Services, discussed the state and federally-funded services and programs provided by Midland which includes the Ombudsman Program and Adult Protective Services (APS). APS provides services for adults 60 years of age or older, as well as adults 18-59 years with a disability who reside in a domestic or community setting. The second afternoon presenter was Terri Simpson, a Long-Term Care Ombudsman (LTCO), who advocates for residents in assisted living facilities. Ombudsmen have access to assisted living facilities 24 hours, 7 days a week. The Ombudsman must have the residentโs permission to take action/report abuse and cannot share information without the residentโs consent. The number to call to report alleged abuse of an older adult
or person with disabilities in an assisted living facility is 1-800-252-4343. To contact the local Ombudsman, call 1-800-283-4070. Beverlee Hiestand, the third afternoon presenter, is on the staff at Stopping Women Abuse Now (SWAN, Inc.) and is the Supervisor of Adult Protective Services in Area 09 which investigates physical, sexual, psychological/emotional, confinement, willful deprivation, passive neglect or economic/financial exploitation. An APS caseworker must have permission from the victim to talk to others about the situation. To report suspected abuse of an older adult or person with disabilities in a domestic or community setting, call 1-866-800-1409. The purpose of 4th Judicial Circuitโs Family Violence C o ord i n at i ng C ou n c i l (FVCC) is to establish a forum to share and discuss information in order to promote a coordinated response to family violence in our communities. Congratulations, Centralia Orphans, On A Great 2016-2017 Season! The 2016-2017 Centralia High School Orphans boys basketball team won the Regional Championship. They went on to the IHSA 3A Sectionals where they played the Benton Rangers on Friday, March 10, 2017. Centralia won the game by a score of 56 โ 47. Centralia advanced to the Super Sectionals in Springfield's Prairie Capital Convention Center against Springfield Lanphier. Centralia's season ended with a 64 โ 38 loss to 3rd ranked Lanphier in 3A play. The Centralia Orphans finished the 2016-2017 season with a 22 โ 10 record. They are ripe for harvest. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal souls, so the sower and the reaper may be glad together.โ (John 4:34-38) Consider and apply some of the aspects of harvest taught by Jesus HARVEST IS ABOUT PEOPLE. Western Christians look mostly on this earthly life for fulfillment and reward. Christians in other countries understand and are driven by the scriptural teaching of rewards in heaven for eternity. What kind of wages will you receive from the Lord of the harvest? HARVESTโS EMPOWERMENT. The Good News is that we need not rely on our own ability to bring in the harvest of souls, but the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). In Luke 10 we can learn some principles to help us reap a harvest; such as partnering with

Cooking For The Birds Southern Cooking this week is going to the birds! At our household we've always enjoyed watching the birds, but I learned early on to attract a variety and to help them through, especially during the winter months when you really need to feed them. I buy bird feed but I also enjoy mixing different ingredients to create food for the birds. The goal is to mix up items that are packed with protein, calories, vitamins, and minerals that birds need. Below are just a few of the many recipes I've used. But don't hesitate to use your own ingredients.
Basic Bird Cakes Bird cakes can be offered whole in a mesh bag or suet feeder, or crumbled and scattered on the ground. 2 cups suet 2 cups peanut butter
2 cups cornmeal
Melt suet in saucepan. Mix in peanut butter and cornmeal. Spoon mixture into muffin cups and cool.

Sausage Biscuits & Gravy
This is a special treat for summer birds. Chop up and mix an assortment of fresh and dried fruits and berries. Put the mixture out for the birds in an empty grapefruit or orange half. Birds seem to particularly enjoy apples, bananas, figs, dates, raisins, blueberries, strawberries and cherries. For a special treat, serve the fruit in a halved coconut. Use your imagination.
Peanut Butter-Suet Mixture The peanut butter adds protein and the cornmeal adds carbohydrates to this easy-to-make offering. The mixture can stay fairly hard in warm weather. 2 cups suet 1 cup peanut butter 2 cups cornmeal
2 cups finely cracked corn millet, or other small seed
Melt suet. Allow it to cool thoroughly, then reheat it. Add peanut butter, stirring until melted and well blended. Add cornmeal and cracked corn and blend well. Pour into forms or suet feeders and cool until hardened.

How to treat a termite problem

ermites are houseguests few homeowners want to experience. With their reputation for voracity and the damage they can inflict on a home, termites are something most people want to avoid at all costs. If termites are already a problem or something homeowners simply want to prevent, there are effective ways to banish these unwelcome guests or keep them from ever entering a home. What is a termite? Termites are small social insects that have the capability to destroy wood. Sometimes they are mistaken for ants, but the two insects are quite different. Termites are actually close relatives to the cockroach. Many termites appear as white or lightcolored and may seem translucent. Winged termites are darker in color.
Termites have a grub-shaped body but, unlike ants, no discernable hourglassshaped waist. Also, their antennae are straight and look beaded, like a string of pearls, while ants have elbowed antennae. Another way to differentiate ants from termites is that termite eyes are very small or nonexistent, while antsโ eyes are clearly visible. Termites live in a nest or colony in large numbers. Their primary food source is plant fiber, known as cellulose. Most termites are rarely seen unless they are swarming or if their nest or a portion of wood has been opened revealing the insects inside. Treating termites Many people do not even know they have a termite problem until that problem has escalated. Because they remain hidden most of the time, termites can be difficult to detect. Incidences of soft wood or visual recognition of swarming termites that occur in the spring can indicate that termites could be residing in a structure or nearby. There are different types of termites, and proper identification is necessary to find the correct treatment option.

Unlike other pests, termites are pests whose detection and removal is best left to a professional who can recognize the subtle signs. He or she will identify certain signs of an infestation, such as mud-looking material on wooden surfaces, discarded wings from a swarm, piles of sawdust, termite tubes running outdoors from the soil to a home, buckling paint, and other indications. There are different ways to prevent or treat a termite infestation. To prevent termites, there are applications of termiticides that are put into the soil surrounding a home or structure. Also, removal of moisture in and around the house is key because termites need moist conditions for survival. Poisoning of nests is also a treatment option. If termites already have infiltrated a home, fumigation may be necessary to remedy that problem. However, fumigation is not always effective at killing eggs and all of the termites. Most exterminators will use a combination of treatments to rid a home of termites. If extreme wood damage has occurred, portions of the structure may have to be removed and rebuilt. This also may help alleviate some of the scent trails termites use to travel to and from nests and food sources. Other termite prevention tips There are other tactics to prevent a termite problem. * Donโt store firewood in contact with the ground. * Use chemically treated wood for building structures.
Plants and gardens touching exterior walls of the home may provide the right environment for a termite colony.
* Disguise wood by painting it or using a shellac or varnish. Termites may not like the taste of treated wood. * Prevent hidden entry points where termites can go unseen. * Remove cardboard, newspaper, cotton materials and any other cellulose from the floor. * Vent kitchens and baths so that they will not trap moisture. * Fix any and all water leaks. * Donโt plant gardens or put soil directly against a homeโs exterior walls. Some simple precautions and a routine inspection can prevent termites from becoming a problem.
