Cooking With Lizzie

Spring is here, thank goodness! In most years spring begins to tease us for a few days in February. Not so this year, but hopefully it won't be long before the breezes whisper in the trees, the sky turns a gentle blue and the bulbs hiding in the garden shoot forth with their beautiful vibrant colors. The days begin to stretch, allowing precious hours to enjoy the outside spring days, but its also time to enjoy some delicious spring dishes. Some of my favorite vegetables and salads are below.

Garden Perfect Salad 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup cold water 2 cups boiling water 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup cider vinegar 1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup grated carrots 1 (15¼ oz.) can crushed 3/4 cup finely shredded cabbage pineapple, drained 1/3 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 (2 oz.) jar diced pimiento, drained

Loans To: Customer Appreciation Days Every Friday in April Snacks | Fun | Giveaways

2 (17 oz.) cans English peas, drained, or 3 (10 oz.) pkgs. frozen tiny green peas, thawed 1 (4 oz.) jar diced pimiento, drained 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 tsp. white pepper

2 cups finely chopped celery 1 (8 oz.) can sliced water chestnuts, drained 1/2 cup chopped green onions 1/2 cup sour cream 1/4 tsp. salt

Combine peas, celery, water chestnuts, pimiento and green onions in a large bowl. Combine sour cream and mayonnaise, stirring well. Add sour cream mixture, salt, and pepper to vegetables; toss gently to coat. Cover and chill thoroughly. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

New Potatoes in Cream Sauce 12 new potatoes 3 T. all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup milk

1 T. chopped fresh chives 3 T. unsalted butter or margarine 1/4 tsp. white pepper 1/2 cup half-and-half

Wash potatoes; pare a 1-inch strip around center of each potato. Place potatoes in a large saucepan; cover with water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender; drain well. Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat; add flour, salt, and pepper, stirring until smooth. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk and half-and-half; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Pour over potatoes; sprinkle with chives. Yield: 4 servings. ***

It's a no brainer, Obamacare (ACA) is in deep trouble. The Democrats certainly didn't win, and the Republican establishment didn't win. This move will have heavy consequences at the polls in 2018. I predict there will be a lot of new faces in Washington on both sides of the aisle. In my opinion, I say, no problem, of those that were against the new plan, let them and their families go on Obamacare! Trump said of what happened, "Let Obamacare explode." It's only a matter of time and it will explode!!! Last year there was a 100% increase in many areas across the country, while in Arizona there was a 160% increase. There were also huge deductible increases in many areas, some with a 60 to 70% increase. Good job, John McCain! Maybe you need to start looking at your home state instead of being in the resistance party against Donald Trump with the Democrats. At t h is p oi nt t he Washington Democrats own Obamacare. This is the second time they have shoved it down Americans'

throats. Of course, with the Republican establishment's help the second time. And who can forget the first time with then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi saying, in the middle of the night, "We have to vote on this bill (speaking of the ACA) so we can read it and find out what's in it!" Who could forget that brainless moment! What a joke! And to join the world of the less-than-smart women, Hillary Clinton was tweeting on Obamacare early Saturday morning, "No vote Friday. This was a victory for the American people." We can't print the words I have for her. Since when was she concerned about the American people? T hat l e a ds me to comment on a statement made Friday evening on CNN ("Clinton News Network"). They said the Republican Party establishment was Donald Trump's party. No, they aren't, and that's why he was elected... by the silent majority. We all know the Democratic Party is a far cry from what it used to be; that's another reason why Donald Trump was elected. So let's see what's happening with Obamacare six months from now. Anyone knows that when you're beating your head against a stone wall, it's best to walk away for a while. Read The Art of the Deal and you'll get it. Many people blame Speaker of the House Paul Ryan for the new bill's failure. Under fire, Ryan

didn't get enough votes from the Republicans to pass this new healthcare bill. In my opinion, he didn't sell the bill. As for the Democrats, the bottom line is they were focused on the process instead of the product. They didn't put their heads together and come to the table for the betterment of the American people. So when will Trump come back to healthcare? When it breaks, and trust, it will. In the meantime, Trump said on Saturday, "It's time to move forward," as well as, "Usually things work out in the end." Next up he'll focus on jobs and tax reform. I say good luck! The last time we saw tax reform was in 1986. Last Sunday was Day 67 for Donald Trump, and all he's met is total resistance. Healthcare is 18% of our economy and it affects all Americans. Friday was a bad day for all Americans, and the Democratic Party celebrated the successful survival of a bad plan that doesn't work, along with the Republican establishment people like John McCain and Lindsey Graham. This one will backfire! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Crosswalk Community Action Agency is still setting up appointments and taking applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which began September 2016. The LIHEAP Program provides financial assistance to eligible households to help pay a portion of their winter heating bills. Households who have not applied since September 1, 2016 are encouraged to apply. Crosswalk will continue to take applications until May 31, 2016 or until f u nd s are d e pl e te d. Crosswalk receives State and Federal Grant money from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to help low income families in Franklin, Jefferson and Williamson Counties. The first step in receiving Energy Assistance is to visit the outreach site in your county and make an appointment so an application can be made at a later date. Eligibility is based upon gross income for the thirty day time frame, which includes the date of the application, and is

Plasma helps maintain blood pressure and supplies critical proteins for clotting and immunity. Eligible donors can learn more, find a donation opportunity and schedule an appointment by using the free Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). days.” Donations help patients like Brady Prosser. He was severely burned in October while mowing near burning leaves. He received regular – sometimes daily – blood and plasma transfusions during his hospitalization. Platelets are tiny cells in blood that form clots and stop bleeding. Although they are needed for many reasons, cancer patients often rely on platelets during treatment. Platelets must be transfused within just five days after donation, making steady donations an important component of patient care. By giving platelets, donors can help patients kick cancer. Type O negative blood can be transfused to patients with any blood type and is often needed in emergency situations when there isn’t time to determine a patient’s blood type. While less than 7 percent of the U.S. population has type O negative blood, hospitals depend on frequent O negative donations to ensure it’s always available for patients in need. Type O negative blood donors are

The American Red Cross is issuing a call for platelet and type O negative and AB blood donors to make an appointment to give after severe winter weather in some parts of the country caused about 250 Red Cross blood drives to cancel in March, resulting in more than 8,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations. Platelets, type O negative blood and type AB plasma are three of the most indemand blood products by hospitals. Those who give can help patients locally or across the country as the Red Cross has the ability to move blood products where and when they are needed most. “All blood types are needed to meet the constant need of patients, and there is a significant need now for platelet and type O negative and AB donations to help some of the most vulnerable patients,” said Joe Zydlo, External Communications Manager, Missouri-Illinois Blood Services. “We ask that you schedule an appointment to roll up a sleeve to help save a life in the coming

“ We Carve Life’s Memories into Stone”

Revivals have begun when believers gathered together to pray and plead the precious blood of Jesus. The Holy Spirit honors the blood. To plead is to invoke the legality of. The WebsterMerriam Dictionary define plea as “to argue before a court or authority, to plead earnestly for help”. Why is there power in the blood of Jesus? LIFE IS IN THE BLOOD. The Bible reveals this mysterious fact, “The life of the living creature is in its blood.” (Leviticus 17:11) Blood is not life but it carries life. Jesus’ conception was supernatural. He was not conceived by a human father, but by God the Father, through the power of the Holy Spirit. (Hebrews 10:5; John 1:14) Jesus’ blood then is holy and precious, untainted by sin. (I Peter 1:19) Through faith in Jesus’ blood we can be cleansed from all sin. Imagine a spiritual blood transfusion. (I John 1:7) The blood of Jesus is alive and efficacious for sin and disease. The devil hates the

mention of the blood of Jesus. AT O N E M E N T C OM E S B Y T H E BLOOD. During the Lenten season, special focus is given to the cross. At Calvary, Jesus wore a crown of thorns and blood flowed down his brow, hair, face, and beard. His hands were nailed to the cross and blood flowed down his arms. His back was ripped with the Roman lector until his body was a bloody mess. His feet were nailed to the cross and blo o d f lowed around the foot of the cross. A spear pierced Jesus’ side and blood and water flowed down Calvary’s hill. The blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God, made atonement for sin and satisfied the just demands of a holy God (Isaiah 53) Atonement means “covering”. Leviticus 17:12 tells us that only the blood could make atonement for sin. When God killed

an innocent animal to make skins to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve, it foreshadowed the atoning blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God (Revelation 5:6-10) In I John 5:8 we read, “And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit and the water and the blood: and these three agree in one” The water of the Word of God washes us, but without the blood it is ineffectual, for the life of Jesus is in the blood. The Word of God tells us that “without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. (Exodus 12:23; 7:12; Hebrews 9:20) Covered by the blood of Jesus, the Father does not see our sins, only the blood of Jesus. THE BLOOD SPEAKS. The writer of Hebrews contrasts the blood of Abel’s with the blood of Jesus. “The blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than the blood of Abel.” (Hebrews 12:24) Abel’s blood cried for vengeance. Jesus’ blood cries for mercy. The high priest would take the blood of the lamb and sprinkle it on the Old Testament mercy seat in

the temple. In the New Testament, only the blood of Jesus allows us to enter God’s presence. (Hebrews 10:20-22) When we put faith in the blood of Jesus, our intercessor, Jesus, pleads for us; because it is speaking blood. PLEADING THE BLOOD. A form of intercessory prayer practiced by many saints of old is pleading the blood of Jesus. Confessing the merits and power of the blood routs the enemy and loosens the presence and power of the Holy Spirit to work. “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, by the word of their testimony, and they loved not their life unto death.” (Revelation 12:11) The blood must be applied by faith and prayer. (Romans 3:25) Believers are spiritual priests and kings who offer up spiritual sacrifices. (I Peter 2:5) Plead the merits of the blood. There is wonder working power in the blood of Jesus. Look to the Lamb of God. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American author and playwright Rose Franken who made the following sage observation: "Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly." • There are only three places in the world that include St. Patrick's Day among their official public holidays: Ireland (of course), the Canadian province of Newfoundland

and Labrador, and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. • It's not clear exactly how they do it, but, according to those who study such things, bald eagles mate while they're in midair. • Do you ever get to the end of a relaxing weekend, only to feel depressed at the prospect of heading back to work Monday morning? Well, the

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Put your restlessness to good use by indulging the Arian love of exploring new places and seeking new challenges. There also could be a new romance waiting to be “discovered.” TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise message from someone in your past could lead to a long-awaited reunion with a once-close friend. Also, look for a workplace problem to be resolved in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your self-confidence is rising, and that should be a significant factor in helping you adjust to a new social situation, as well as adjusting to a series of changes in the workplace. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Turnabout could be lots of fun when someone who previously accepted your tender, loving care without question now suggests that he or she wants to start taking care of you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Put the lessons you learned from past disappointments to work in planning your future. The way ahead opens to opportunities “purrfectly” suited to the adventurous Lion. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to renew contacts with family members and/ or old friends who somehow slipped off your personal viewing screen in recent years. Travel also is favored. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Most problems surrounding that recent personal situation have been

When you return to your workaday world, you’ll be ready to take on that new project. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful how you advise a troubled friend. Even your wise counsel could be misunderstood. Better to suggest that he or she seek professional help. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Family problems once again dominate and, once again, everyone seeks your guidance in these matters. Later, you can indulge in some muchneeded relaxation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some mixed signals create confusion in the workplace. Best advice: Ask for explanations before you attempt to deal with any of these matters on your own. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A patch of roiling water in the workplace could be threatening, but stay the course and you’ll soon be clear of it. Then go out and have a great time with loved ones. all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness." — Carl Sagan © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
