SERVICE AWARDS AT JCCC

A NEW BEGINNING

The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce recognizes each month one individual who has provided exemplary service to one of the Chamber's "secret shoppers." Many of the past recipients were present and recognized at the recent Shopper's Weekly Staff Photo annual chamber banquet. Pictured (L to R) are past customer service superstars Seed Ministries), Theresa Evans), and Paul Shah Troy Horton (Pro Salon), Williams (Drury Inn & (Lowe’s). The founding of the Methodist Children's Home of the Southern Illinois Conference began in the heart of an orphan boy, Dan W. Hopkins, who later became a Methodist preacher and served as a supply pastor. He was orphaned at the age of 10 and grew up with a desire to do something for children who were underprivileged as he had been. The home was officially opened on the first of February, 1913. The methods in child care have undergone a great many changes since the home first came into being. There was a time when it was considered that the more children who could be crowded into an institution, the greater the service of that institution. We now know much more about the needs of care. So from 1913 to today there have been many changes, added services, huge growth, and caring for and toward the communities served by United Methodist Children's Home which is no longer totally an orphans home. But today, big things are happening, although the same faith based organization offers the same services with plans for serving hundreds more in 2017. In 2016 United Methodist Children's Home served 1,000 people — children, families and adolescents. But today as Dr. John Shadowens, President and CEO said so appropriately in his opening speech on Thursday, March 30 at the Drury Inn in Mt. Vernon when the announcement was made, with all new beginnings comes name change. The board recently met and voted unanimously to change the name to Spero Family Services, Hope • Help • Healing. As said by Spero Board Member Tony Wielt, "It is so much more than a children's home yet for many of us in Southern Illinois when we hear the name United Methodist Children's Home that's what we think. Frankly, the name was not descriptive enough of the body of work that we do." The new brand is a name that is rooted in God’s love and promise of an abundant life. “Spero” is the Latin word for “I hope” from the phrase “While I

SHIMKUS MAKES STATEMENT ON HEALTHCARE REFORM C ongressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) released the following s t at e m e nt af t e r t h e American Health Care Act was withdrawn from consideration: “I’ve strongly opposed the Affordable Care Act’s mandates, middle-class tax hikes, and expensive onesize-fits-all health insur-

ance plans since day one. My constituents have judged that law, and the more than 60 votes I’ve cast to repeal and replace it, through seven years and four election cycles. They’ve rendered their judgement: Obamacare has failed. “As we all saw this week, moving bills through the legislative process is hard.

But that’s a feature, not a flaw, of our constitutional republic. While I’m disappointed in today’s outcome, my commitment to my constituents to follow through on the promise I made to provide relief from Obamacare is as strong as ever.”

yet breathe, I have hope.” The new name, pronounced like “sparrow,” speaks to the agency’s core value of providing hope, help and healing to those longing for a better life. The new agency logo, a stylized anchor, is rich in imagery and meaning. The top of the anchor is a cross; at the bottom a sparrow’s head –its wings intertwined with the anchor. This represents the very heart of agency’s mission and values. The rising anchor is a symbol for Hope. - “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19. When a ship’s anchor weighs, or is raised up, it signals the beginning of a new voyage, a new adventure. The stylized image of the bird reminds us of the value God places on us in Matthew 10:29-31. “This was a historic day in the Un it e d Me t h o d i s t Children’s Home’s history, and with this new name, we are poised to grow and help even more individuals, youth, and families – which we could not do without the support of our donors, church partners, and businesses in the communities we ser ve,” says John Shadowens, President &

CEO of Spero Family Services. Although the name has changed, the mission and vision remain the same. The strong and enduring tradition and affiliation with the United Methodist Church also remains the same. This new name opens more doors for support, and allows the people throughout Southern Illinois to become more aware of the full array of services available in addition to the youth homes in M t . Ve r n o n a n d Murphysboro. Those other services include outpatient counseling services with locations in 6 counties throughout the region; a Foster Care program, a Youthbuild program to help teens get their HSE/ GED and learn a trade, parenting support, an on campus school, a nursefamily partnership program that helps first-time mothers, transitional living, and Bright Start, a faithbased childcare center in Mt. Vernon. Learn more by visiting sperofs.org. Spero Family Services welcomes volunteers (groups and individuals), mentors and potential new foster parents.

GIVE BLOOD AND HELP SAVE LIVES THIS SPRING Eligible blood donors of all blood types are encouraged to give blood through the American Red Cross this spring to help ensure a sufficient supply for hospital patients. Donated blood is perishable and must constantly be replenished to keep up with hospital patient need. Red blood cells are the blood component most frequently transfused by hospitals and must be used within 42 days of donation. Eligible donors can give red blood cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a Power Red donation, where available. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells during a single donation, allowing them to maximize their impact. During this type of donation, red blood cells are separated from other blood components, and the plasma and platelets are

safely and comfortably returned to the donor. While donors of all blood types are encouraged to give blood, type O, A negative and B negative donors are urged to give Power Reds if they meet the additional eligibility criteria. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients of any blood type in an emergency. Similarly, type O positive can be transfused to Rh-positive patients of any blood type. Types A negative and B negative can be transfused to Rh-positive or negative patients. Power Red donations help ensure a stable supply of these critical blood types. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, up to six times a year, and Power Red donations may be made every 112 days, up to three times per year. Make an appointment to

donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below. Jefferson County: Apr. 26, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m., Bluford Ruritan Club, 814 6th Street, Bluford. Apr. 27, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m., Donoho Prairie Christian Church, 7405 Exchange Road, Texico. Apr. 28, 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., Rolland Lewis Community Building, South 27th Street, Mt. Vernon.

visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card

or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds

Silent stroke may not exhibit any symptoms, making it more difficult to detect. The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling many different bodily functions. When working at optimal capacity, the brain is a wonder to behold. When illness or trauma affects the brain, various parts of the body may not work as they should. One of the more devastating things that can affect the brain is stroke. Stroke describes a sudden stoppage of blood from reaching the brain. Harvard Medical School states that if a large number of brain cells are starved of blood supply, they can die. With their demise, a person’s memory and ability to

speak and move can be compromised. While many strokes come on suddenly, certain factors may indicate a person is at risk. Such factors may include prior heart attacks, genetics, high blood pressure, smoking, or a prior stroke. However, in a particular type of stroke — a “silent stroke” — symptoms are far more subtle and difficult to spot. Silent cerebral infarction, often referred to as “SCI” or “silent stroke,” is a brain injury likely caused by a blood clot interrupting blood flow to the brain, offers the American Stroke Association. Silent strokes increase risk for other strokes and can be a sign of progressive brain damage. A silent stroke is typically only noticed as a side component of an MRI of the brain. Many times patients do not recall having a stroke and never felt any symptoms. Silent strokes should not be mistaken for mini-strokes. Mini-stroke is a brief but discrete and memorable event, with symptoms appearing for a few minutes or a few hours. According to a study on s i l e nt s t r o k e t i t l e d “Functional and Cognitive Consequences of Silent Stroke Discovered Using Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in an Elderly Population” and published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, silent strokes are quite common and can have serious con-

sequences. Researchers have found that silent stroke is associated with impairments in tests of cognitive function rather than movement-oriented performance tests like rising from a chair. Almost 50 percent of studied silent strokes affected frontal circuit components of the brain, such as the frontal cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus. Lesions in these brain structures compromised executive functions and were related to vascular dementia. Another study showe d ass o ci at ions between silent stroke and visual field deficits, weakness in walking on heels, history of memory loss, migraines, and lower scores in cognitive function tests. The “silent” part of a silent stroke also refers to the areas of the brain that the stroke affects. Experts at Harvard Medical School explain that, during a silent stroke, an interruption in blood flow destroys areas of cells in a part of the brain that is “silent,” meaning that it doesn’t control any vital functions. Researchers say that, over time, the damage from silent strokes can accumulate, leading to more and more problems with memory. Collectively, silent strokes become silent no longer. There are certain ways to reduce the risk of any type of stroke. These include: • managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels • quitting smoking • reducing the risk of diabetes and effectively treating the condition if it is present • losing weight to prevent obesity • exercising and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle • taking a low-dose aspirin or a drug that prevents blood clots. Silent strokes largely go unrecognized but can lead to significant brain injury. Getting the facts can help men and women reduce their risk for silent stroke.

April is

Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Even though there are people in the world working on preventatives for animal cruelty all year, April is a special month for ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) because it is Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Month. Supporters celebrate this month by raising awareness about important issues dealing with animals. The ASPCA hopes the communities can join in and help them by getting involved. A person can do this in many ways. They can

start a fund raising campaign page. Create a personal ASPCA fundraising page as an important event in your life and share it with family and friends, e.g. birthday, memory of pet that has passed, etc. Do a run drive like a 5K and the money raised will help animals in need nationwide. One form of abuse is dog fighting. April 8th is considered National Dog Fighting Awareness Day. This will be the third year that ASPCA has brought attention to this brutal form of abuse. Dog fighting is a blood sport in which dogs are forced to fight each other for peoples' entertainment and monetary gain. This cruel inhumane act is a felony in all 50 states, but it still continues. We as a community can take action to stop it by not being silent and spreading the word. The Humane Society has a website where you can get free packets to do this. The packets include posters, postcards brochures, etc. If you suspect dog fighting in your neighborhood, tell your local law enforcement to contact The Humane Society of the United States. It has a standard reward now doubled to $5,000.00. A couple of ways to spot these violent acts are: • Numerous pit bull types being kept in one location, especially multiple dogs chained and unsocialized; and • Dogs who have scars on their face, legs, and back area. Another form of animal cruelty is called puppy mills. Puppy Mills are an establishment where the people breed puppies for sale, typically on an incentive basis, in a condition regarded as inhumane. The profit is of more importance than the care given. Here are 10 signs from the website iheartdogs. com to see if a puppy that you may be interested in has come from a puppy mill: 1. Out of state. You really should stay away from pet stores when puppy buying. Be worried if they are coming from out of state, especially midwestern states. 2. If a breeder cannot let you meet the parents, you should walk away. Not meeting the parents would be like buying a car without knowing the make of the car. For all you know those people did not even breed the puppy. Buy ing and selling him/her could be secondhand for unknown reasons. 3. Let's meet. If you call a breeder and they say "lets meet" when you ask to visit their kennel, be wary. Unless there is an extreme circumstance, there should be no reason you cannot see where

the puppy was born. 4. Reputable breeders. Breeders focus on one breed, maybe two. If you see a site with five or more breeds and mixed breeds it's a puppy mill. 5. Multiple litters. When you call and they say they have a waiting list on litters they have and a waiting list on the unborn, more than likely you are looking at a puppy mill. If the breeder has 30 puppies, it's definitely a puppy mill. 6. Vaccinations. Puppy mills do not like to spend money. That being said, more than likely the parents may not be vaccinated (always ask). Puppies have probably not been not vaccinated or there are so many they've been done twice. 7. Beware of breeders making promises. If you have a certain mix and they promise that the dog will have a certain type of quality of one breed or the other, steer clear. 8. Cleanliness. Puppy mill puppies will likely have a smell like a kennel and they have poor coat quality. 9. Breeders should care enough about what happens to a puppy that she / he should have a contract protecting you both. 10. Too young. There is a certain age you are allowed to take a puppy from his/her mother. If the breeder lets you take them before time, more than likely it's because they do not want to have that extra expense. Neglect is one other form of abuse. It is the failure to provide basic care required for an animal to thrive. According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, at first glance cases may seem less egregious than a single brutal act of violent abuse, but severe neglect can mean extended periods of extreme suffering resulting in permanent injury or even death. The Animal Legal Defense Fund maintains a database of criminal cases in the U.S. It was reported to their organization 30% of cases that they tracked was animal neglect, often associated with human neglect. This could mean the elderly, or young children, or other dependents. Neglect could also include handling animals on a large scale as the puppy mills mentioned earlier, or hoarding animals. We as a community need to put a stop to the cruelty of animals. They cannot speak for themselves. We are responsible for those who are unable to defend themselves. April may be set aside for the awareness of animal cruelty, but we as human beings should always be the voice of those that cannot be heard.

The Presidency in Crisis! That was the introduction going into Meet the Press on Sunday. I guess that's what the liberals like Chuck Todd call fair and balanced! I certainly don't. At a press conference last week a CBS reporter questioned White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer and literally put words in his mouth, with Spicer calling him out on it! The last two months have been totally crazy. And what the Democrats as well as the Republican establishment are seeing is Trump supporters aren't buying in, but only getting stronger! Why aren't we talking about what the President is doing? Like what he's doing to help the American people, even with all the roadblocks the rocket scientists in Washington and the liberal media are throwing out! Chuck Schumer is jumping up and down against the vote next week for Supreme C our t nominee Neil Gorsuch. I predict he will be confirmed. He's more than qualified, with an excellent track record. At this point there is a majority that will vote for this nominee. It was Schumer that changed the rules that he's upset about now, I think, in 2013. Now he wants to change them back! Schumer's complaint is

that Neil Gorsuch is conservative. Imagine that; he's replacing Justice Antonin Scalia. The bottom line is Schumer doesn't have the votes to filibuster. Schumer's prediction is Neil Gorsuch won't be confirmed as a Supreme Court Judge. My prediction is he will. No matter what, it will be lively this week in the Senate. The big question is: It's 70 days in and where are we in the Trump Presidency? Frankly, if I were a House Democrat I would be very nervous in 2018. The last thing this is, in my opinion, is a Presidency in crisis. On to the Russians. Former FBI Agent Clint Watts says the Russians are still at it, waiting for the U.S. to crumble from within. He said on Meet the Press," The Russians were (and are still involved) on a state to state basis! What was interesting was he said they pushed for Trump as well as B ernie at times. Hmmm! Let's see. Russia wanted Bernie to win in the primary against Hillary and Trump to win in the general against Hillary. Maybe now it's coming to light. It was discussed years ago that then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was "involved in the last Russian election" against Putin. Maybe this

whole Russia thing is they were paying Hillary back! If the Russians are involved John McCain says it's an act of war! Is he beating the war drums? The bottom line is the majority of the American people were fed up and are still fed up. Our elected officials, both Democrat and Republican, need to start doing what they're supposed to do, start working together and get things done. Prime example: There is no reason American citizens can't have access to a healthcare plan that works. Instead of being concerned about Obama's legacy, sit down and get it together. And if they had the same insurance (Obamacare), they would fix it! In closing, I've gotten a number of calls about a book I mentioned last week, The Art of the Deal, written by Donald Trump. The most important chapter to read is Chapter II. Check with your local library or order it at your favorite bookstore. Until next week. Vote on April 4, 2017! To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. In order for your letter to be considered for publication, you must provide your signature and an address and phone number where you can be reached. Addresses and phone numbers will not be published.

Easter Brunch

Welcome springtime with a parade of exciting Easter treats. How about starting with a picture perfect brunch. Menu made easy: Orange Eggnog, Easter Ham, Herb Scrambled Eggs, Kulich.

Orange Eggnog

Find the Shopper’s Weekly online & on social media like Facebook & Twitter.

4 eggs, separated 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup bourbon (optional) 1/2 cup light cream 1/4 cup orange liqueur (optional) Freshly grated nutmeg 1/2 tsp. finely grated orange peel Beat egg yolks and sugar until thick Beat in bourbon and liqueur. Stir in orange peel and orange juice, then stir in heavy cream and light cream. Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry; fold into the orange juice mixture. Pour into a chilled punch bowl and sprinkle nutmeg over the top. Makes 12 servings (3 oz. each).

Easter Ham

1/2 fully cooked ham (5 to 6 lbs.) 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1 cup pineapple juice 1 can (10 oz.) mandarin orange 3/4 cup light brown sugar sections, drained 2 tsp. dry mustard Whole cloves Prepare ham for baking as directed on label. (For extra succulence, bring ham to boil in large saucepan of water; drain.) Place ham on rack in roasting pan and bake in preheated 325° oven 1 hour. Remove from oven and, with knife, score fat in scallop pattern. Combine pineapple juice, sugar, mustard and ginger in small saucepan. Bring to boil and cook, stirring, until slightly thickened. Baste ham with some of juice mixture. Increase oven temperature to 425° and bake ham 10 minutes. Remove from oven and center a mandarin orange section in each scallop, securing with a clove. Brush ham all over with juice mixture and bake 20 minutes longer, basting frequently. Makes 6 to 8 servings (with leftovers).

Herb-Scrambled Eggs

8 to 12 eggs 2 to 3 T. chopped fresh herbs (parsley, chives, 1/2 to 3/4 cup light cream tarragon) or 1 T. dried mixed herbs 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 cup butter Pinch of pepper Beat eggs with cream, salt, pepper and herbs. In large skillet, heat butter until bubbling (do not let butter brown); pour in egg mixture. Cook over low heat, using spatula to stir set portions of egg in from sides – do not overcook. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Kulich

2 pkgs. active dry yeast 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup warm water 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup warm milk 1/2 tsp. salt 6-1/2 cups flour 1 cup sugar 4 eggs plus 2 yolks, beaten 2 T. salad oil 1 cup butter, melted Confectioners' Sugar Glaze 1/2 cup raisins (recipe below) Dissolve yeast in warm water in large bowl. Add milk and 1½ cups of flour; stir until smooth. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, 3 hours or more. Beat down dough. Add remaining ingredients except Confectioners' Sugar Glaze, beating in remaining flour gradually. Knead in bowl until dough is smooth and elastic. For baking pans, use 2 tall, 1 lb. coffee cans. Grease pans and fit each one with collar of greased brown paper (this will add height to bread). Fill pans 2/3 full of dough. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, at least 1 hour. Bake in preheated 375° oven about 1 hour or until well browned. Cool in cans 10 minutes, then remove to rack. When cool, spread with Confectioners' Sugar Glaze, allowing some to drizzle down sides.

DEAR DEBORAH: From your email it appears that Sheena sees the vet regularly, which is important for senior pets in particular. While bad breath (halitosis) often is due to dental problems like gingivitis — where bacteria builds up in the mouth around the gums and contributes to a foul odor — other conditions like diabetes, digestive disorders, cancer and even sinus inflammation have bad breath as a symptom. So make sure cats with chronic halitosis get a complete exam to rule out other underlying issues.

By Larry Cox Rin-Tin-Tin Q: When I was a youngster growing up in Illinois, I was quite the fan of Rin-TinTin. I ate Nabisco Shredded Wheat since the company sponsored the television series. I have the "Adventures of Rin-Tin-Tin" board game and the magic brass-

ring set. I am not interested in selling, but I have wondered what they might be worth. Incidentally, I had a dog that I named Rin-TinTin. — Carl, El Paso, Texas A: Warner Brothers introduced The Wonder Dog in 1923, and the talented German Shepherd became an instant star and generated so much money that

he actually saved the studio from bankruptcy. Rin-TinTin starred in 19 films for Warner Brothers between 1923 and 1930. He was also featured on both radio and television. Your board game is valued in the $50 to $150 range, depending on condition, according to Ted Hake, author of the "Price Guide of Character Toys." If your brass-ring collection is complete, Hake believes it could be worth as much as $600. *** Q: I have a small bowl that I was given several

years ago. The only mark on it is "Koenig." Can you tell me anything about it? — Sarah, Toledo, Ohio A: Your bowl was crafted by Diane Koenig, a studio potter operating in the Hudson, Ohio, area. According to "The Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay," by Lois Lehner and published by Collector Books, Koenig makes wheelthrown graffito and slipware pieces, mostly in blue and white, black and white or combinations of those colors. She graduated from Bowling Green State Uni-

Wednesday, April 5, 2017 versity in 1976 and has worked as a potter ever since. *** Q: I have two 78-rpm records, "Like a Dream" recorded by Caruso, and "Song of India" as cut by violinist Fritz Kreisler. Could you please tell me if they have any value and, if so, where I can sell them. — Robert, Daytona Beach, Florida A: Your 78s are worth about a dollar each. Despite rumors to the contrary, most of the Victor Red Deal recordings by Caruso have very little value. Serious

collectors are more interested in his more scarce sessions, such as the ones he had at Zonophone. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Trinity and the Cross I’ve always viewed St Patrick’s Day as a harbinger of spring. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. As a young man, Patrick was captured by raiders off the coast of England and was sold as a slave to a farmer in Ireland. Patrick prayed that if God would help him escape and get back to his family in England, he would serve God all the days of his life. Patrick did escape, took a ship back to England, studied for the priesthood, and returned to Ireland as a missionary. Legend says that Patrick used a cross to drive all the snakes out of Ireland and miracles followed his ministry. To teach his many converts about the Trinity of the Godhead, Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to demonstrate the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as the great three-in-one. The apostle Paul speaks of the cross more than any other writer of the Bible. In his epistles, he refers constantly to the trinity. This Lenten season, focus on the trinity and the cross.

1. Is the book of Philemon in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. Whose first verse is, "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God"? Matthew, Mark, Luke, John 3. Which "Mount" provided a contest scene

“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ . . . For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. (Ephesians 2:13, 18) THE POWER OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST. The central theme of the epistles of Paul is the cross. As St Patrick was delivered from slavery and, as legend says, used the cross to drive the snakes out of Ireland, so Christ’s cross delivered us from the power of sin, death, and Satan. (Ephesians 2:1-3) “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ. (Ephesians 2:4-8) Through the cross we have been raised up in heavenly realms with Christ. (Ephesians 2:6) Through the cross of Christ, the Father has a wonderful destiny for you. (Ephesians 2:10) Through the cross we

have been reconciled to the Father, “brought near by the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13) In the cross, Jew and Gentile have access to the Father by one Spirit. In the old covenant of only the high priest could enter with blood into the presence of God. In the new covenant of the blood of Christ, through the “veil of His flesh, all believers have access to God! (Ephesians 2:16-18) The Holy Spirit honors the blood. Through the cross both Jew and Gentile become one new man. Our body becomes a temple for the Holy Spirit to dwell in. (Ephesians 2:22) THE OBEDIENCE OF CHRIST TO THE CROSS. “And being found in appearance of a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross! Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place. (Philippians 2:6-11) In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed to the Father as He faced the cross. He prayed three times, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. (Matthew 26:36-

44) Isaiah prophesied of Gethsemane, the cross, and the resurrection. “Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer and, though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin . . . After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied. (Isaiah 53:10-11) Because Jesus was obedient to death on the cross, God has exalted Him and given Him the name above all names, “that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow; and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11) When you see that shimmering shamrock of St Patrick’s, let it remind you of the work of the trinity and the cross. Bow your knee before the Lord Jesus Christ and confess Him as Lord. “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

by Samantha Weaver • It was the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who made the following sage obser vation: "Government by organized money is just as dangerous as government by organized mob." • You might be surprised to learn that Helen Keller, best known as the first blind and deaf person to earn a bachelor's degree, loved performing. She spent years on vaude-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful about doing someone a favor when you don’t know the full story behind the request. Don’t rely on someone’s unsubstantiated assurances. Insist on all the facts before you act. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That workplace problem still needs your attention before you finally can close the book on it. Meanwhile, a longanticipated reunion gets closer to becoming a happy reality. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might be demanding more from others than they can give. Best advice: Have a long and frank talk to determine what the facts are. Tensions should abate as the week winds down. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Aspects are favorable throughout this week for making contacts that could be important to your career plans. Meanwhile, an old friend offers the advice you’re seeking. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s time to stop licking your wounds from past mistakes. Get up and get going toward your future. Loyal friends will be there to help the Lion get back into rip-roaring shape. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Take time out to go over what’s expected of you before you begin your new project. Otherwise, you run the risk of pushing yourself harder than you need to. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unusual request could put you

in an awkward position. Best advice: Deal with it immediately. The longer you delay, the more difficult it will be to get out of it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should feel recharged and ready for whatever your workaday world holds for you. The same positive energy spills over into your personal relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A prospect might be less than it appears to be. Like the Archer in your sign, you always aim for the truth. And this is no time to settle for less than full disclosure. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Start doing some serious thinking about a career move that could entail more than just changing job sites. Some lifestyle changes also might be involved. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With tensions easing at the workplace, a more positive environment once again encourages the free flow of ideas so typical of the alwaysinnovative Aquarian. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show some of that usually hidden steel-strong Piscean backbone, and stand up for yourself if you hope to make a case for that promotion you know you deserve. BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy doing new things and staying ahead of the crowd. You would make a fine sports coach or military leader. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

along the street. • With warmer weather approaching, you might want to consider heading to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to witness an annual rite of spring. Students at Lake Superior State University gather on (or near) the first day of spring for the annual Snow m an Bu r n i ng . Started in 1971 by a campus club known as the Unicorn Hunters, the tradition involves setting alight a 12-foot-tall "snowman" — usually built of recycled paper, wood and wire — to celebrate the end of winter. • If you haven't listened to any new music in a while, chances are you're

over 33. Those who study such things say that's the age at which Americans would rather stick to what they know than try out new tunes. • If winter seems to be dragging on endlessly, be glad you don't live on Uranus; there, winter lasts 21 years.
