Wednesday, May 3, 2017 Earth when it comes to sports. It's a place where the best come to shine, where people behave — ever heard of anyone getting in a fight at The Masters? — where there isn't a cellphone (calls are free), not a speck of garbage, and food and beer are inexpensive (and tasty). The entire world outside of the National could be on fire and nobody on the grounds would know until they exited the front gates. We need more places like Augusta in the world. More teams make the NBA and NHL playoffs than do not. Think about that for a moment. It's absurd, but not when your team makes the playoffs (and if they don't, you feel terrible). It's good to have the Canadian teams back; it just feels wrong when they're not playing the game that gives their lives so much purpose. That said, I think this finally is going to be the Washington Capitals' year, providing they get past the Penguins and Rangers, and beat the Blackhawks in the finals. On the hardwood, you'd be nuts to bet against Stephen Curry and Golden State, but as long as LeBron is on the floor, there's always a chance for Cleveland. And of course the Cubs will repeat. Good things come in pairs!

Prime Cuts The last few weeks of March, the first few weeks of April ... these are the prime cuts for sports fans. You have two leagues — the NBA and the NHL — wrapping up their regular seasons, hopefully with a little drama and playoff implications. The two best championship tournaments in all of sports are being played — the NCAA basketball tournaments and The Masters — and hope springs eternal for the entire nation as baseball teams break camp and head off for their home openers. At no time are there more sport fans on equal footing, more engaged in the goings-on of their favorite team or sport. I never liked the "March Madness" moniker. It's only madness if you think that anybody outside of Duke, Kansas, North Carolina or Kentucky can win the men's tournament. These play-in games are a joke, but I guess it's all that some students will ever really have in terms of feeling the electricity of a national audience. It's not like Red Bank State or Twizzler Tech is ever

SANDOVAL FFA ILLINOIS AGRICULTURE LEGISLATIVE DAY The Sandoval FFA Chapter recently attended I l l i n o i s Ag r i c u l t u re Legislative Day at the State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. Over 700 FFA Members gathered at the state capitol to talk to legislators about their love for agriculture and the FFA. Sandoval FFA Members arrived in the State Capitol to help create agriculture commodity baskets that would then be given to all legislators. After the baskets were created, all FFA members gathered on the steps of the capitol for a group photo with the Governor. The Sandoval FFA Members continued their busy day at the capitol by meeting Senator McCarter and Representative Cavaletto. Some of the Sandoval FFA members had not met their local legislators; therefore this was a great opportunity for each FFA member to meet the legislators and find out a little bit more of what their job at the capitol really is. obtaining a college education at Kaskaskia College. The gift was placed in trust and is managed by the US Bank Private Group. The purpose of the Trust is to serve as a perpetual endowment to assist current and future generations of St. Mary Catholic Church parishioners in attending Kaskaskia College by full payment of their tuition for four consecutive semesters. Mr. Sprehe expanded the scope of Trust in 2002 by amending t he Tr ust Agreement to include an additional category of baccalaureate scholarships. These baccalaureate scholarships are for St. Mary Catholic Church parishioners who have graduated from Kaskaskia College and are continuing their studies at a four-year university of their choice.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Div ision of Fisheries last week confirmed that a new staterecord hybrid crappie was caught at Kinkaid Lake in Jackson County on March 28. The fish, caught by Ryan Povolish of Carbondale, weighed 4 pounds, 8.8 ounces. The fish appeared to be a black crappie, but genetic testing completed this week by the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) confirmed it to be a hybrid crappie. "The fish had the appearance of a black crappie, but that's why we do the genetic testing," said Dan Stephenson, chief of the IDNR Division of Fisheries. "Ryan's catch is another indicator of the great fishing opportunities

anglers can find here in Illinois." “INHS was excited to be able to assess Ryan's massive slab crappie,” said Mark Davis, conservation biologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey. “Using DNA from a fin clip, we looked at three pieces of DNA from this fish and compared it with both a pure white and a black crappie from Kinkaid Lake. The genetics show that the mother of the record fish was a black crappie, while the father was either a white or a hybrid crappie.” The previous state-record hybrid crappie, caught in a Jefferson County pond in 2008, weighed 4 pounds, 8.3 ounces. The existing state-record black crappie was caught at Rend Lake in 1976, weighing 4 pounds, 8 ounces.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Way of the Cross It is the most life altering walk of history. Hollywood has its “Walk of the Stars” – the walk of the rich and the famous. The one who walked the road of the Way of the Cross walked a lonely road. Over 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ walked the gauntlet of reproach, rejection, and suffering, carrying his cross up Golgotha’s hill to be crucified outside the city of Jerusalem. B e c a u s e C h r i s t ’s Passion was accomplished in a specific geographic and historic place, thousands of pilgrims have journeyed to the Holy Land to follow the steps of the Savior that he walked that day up the Way of the Cross. The narrow, winding stretch of road between the Antonia fortress and Golgotha’s hill where Jesus walked, bowed under the weight of the cross, has undergone many changes over the centuries since the times of the gospels. The Way of the Cross is not simply a physical, geographical, or historical exercise. Walking the Way of the Cross is a spiritual exercise of devotion, thanksgiving, and worship for multitudes of pilgrims.

7

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

The good news is that you do not have to go to the Holy Land to walk the Via Dolorosa in the footsteps of Jesus. Jesus was so weakened by the abuse and pain afflicted on him that he fell under the weight of the cross he was compelled to carry up the Way of the Cross to the Place of the Skull, where he died for you and me. Will you receive His cross and follow the steps of Christ? God’s Word gives us this admonishment. “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.” (I Peter 2:21) If you would follow the Way of Christ’s steps, know they are marked by these footprints for us to follow. THE WAY OF SUBMISSION. Jesus was totally submitted and yielded to the leadership of His Heavenly Father. (Matthew 6:10; Luke 22:42) Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:3435) Do you follow His example? THE WAY OF SERVANTHOOD. Jesus knew

from where he came and where he was going. (John 13:3) Because of this he had no problem being servant to all. Jesus gave us his example to follow when he washed the disciple’s feet. (John 13:1-17) Your certainty of where you come from and where you are going will enable you to be a servant in like manner. THE WAY OF SERIOUSNESS. Jesus was full of joy and promised our joy would be full but he took life very seriously. He was sober-minded, not given to silliness, doublemindedness, or idleness. He told us our eye must be single. (Matthew 6:22) Are you following His pattern? THE WAY OF THE SUPERNATURAL. Everywhere he went signs and wonders followed. Jesus’ birth, ministry, death, and resurrection involved the power of the supernatural miracle working God. God hasn’t changed. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8) Are signs and wonders following you? THE WAY OF SPECIFIC PURPOSE. Jesus came to save that which was lost and to destroy the works of the devil. He came to save you. Even the Apostle Paul needed Christ’s salvation. “This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief.” (I Timothy 1:15)

Have you accepted his sacrifice on the cross for your sins? Have you sought Him for his will – his specific purpose for your life? THE WAY OF SACRIFICE AND SUFFERING. He came to give something – his life – for the sake of something else – your redemption. Do you live a life of sacrifice? Jesus walked the way of sacrifice for you. Do you “share in the fellowship of his suffering?” (Philippians 3:10; Romans 8:17) THE WAY OF SUPREMACY. (Philippians 2:8-11) If you continue to follow his steps, you are also destined to rule and reign with him for eternity! (Revelation 5:9-11) Follow Jesus on the Way of the Cross. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My little Schnoodle, "Daisy," hates noises, thunder, firecrackers and more — but only indoors. We can be outside and have large trucks go by with air brakes squealing, and she doesn't care. But ordinary house noises, like windows creaking, have begun to bother her recently. Last year I got a new front door and it really cracks and creaks in the afternoon when it gets hot. She is petrified of this, shaking and panting the entire time. Please help, as we are at our wits' end. — Pam, via email DEAR PAM: If the issue started over the past year,

have the veterinarian check her out thoroughly. Not just her hearing and sight, but for any underlying conditions. While Schnoodles are less prone to certain health conditions of their parent bre e ds (Po o d le and Schnauzer), they could still suffer from inherited conditions. According to the AKC, autoimmune thyroiditis is one possibility; behavioral changes like excessive anxiety are among the symptoms of this condition. However, even completely healthy dogs can develop a phobia to noise, perhaps because they attach a negative experience to a specific noise. In that case, TLC and training can help, along with medication if needed. Talk to the vet about Daisy's noise phobia and work out a treatment and training plan, if possible. For example, use antianxiety medication for a time to help Daisy stay

Donald Trump's saber rattling may or may not deter Kim Jong Un, but it's had an effect south of the border. In the first few months of this year, illegal border crossings have dropped precipitously. It is an early proof of concept that yes, it is possible to secure the border and a victory, even if a provisional and incomplete one, for President Trump's enforcement agenda. Once you stripped away the impossibilities from Trump's rhetoric on immigration during the campaign — there wasn't going to be a wall along the entire border paid for by Mexico, nor were there going to be mass deportations and a Muslim ban — the core of his message was a commitment to crack down on illegal border crossings. This is happening. It has been reported in the press, but it almost never makes it into the conversation about his first 100 days. If Trump had promised to almost immediately reduce

illegal border crossings from Mexico to a 17-year low, it would have been dismissed as bombast. But here we are. On the border, there is cause to be at least encouraged by all the winning. According to t he Department of Homeland Security, there were 17,000 arrests at the border in March, the lowest figure since 2000, and down significantly from the nearly 60,000 arrests in December. The message has been received that President Trump is, to coin a phrase, a bad hombre. His tough rhetoric alone would be enough to make would-be migrants think twice. But the administration also has tightened up on enforcement; both immigration arrests and socalled detainers — requests to local law enforcement to turn over to the feds illegal immigrants in jail — have increased. Enhanced enforcement, real and perceived, is clearly affecting the decision-making of would-be migrants. The fees charged by so-called coyotes to bring people across the border have risen, reflecting the higher risk. A jump from, say, $3,500 to $8,000 represents an enormous new expense for a mother in Honduras, especially if her chances of staying in the United States are diminishing.

Some caveats. First, the Trump administration will have to continue to strengthen enforcement. Otherwise, illegal immigration will bounce back to its normal trend. The experience after the 1986 amnesty confirms this. The law was supposed to include tougher enforcement, and this expectation initially suppressed immigrant flows. When it became clear that it was all talk, illegal immigration continued as before. Second, visa overstays are a large and perhaps growing contributor to illegal immigration. This deserves as much attention as the border. Finally, the administration will have to resist the urge to declare victory and go home. The moderates in the White House may be tempted to soften Trump's image via a grand bargain on immigration, arguing that it's "mission accomplished" on enforcement and time to pivot to a large-scale amnesty. Despite the hostile press coverage, what Trump has done so far on immigration is hardly radical and basically represents a return to the pre-Barack Obama status quo, when the federal government didn't openly flout its own laws. For now, it has gotten results. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW AGING WOMEN CAN FIGHT FIBROMYALGIA PAIN As the body ages, aches and pains might become more difficult for men and women to handle. While not all pain is indicative of a disorder or condition, aging women who experience pain may be suffering from fibromyalgia. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases notes that fibromy-

algia is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain. While anyone can get fibromyalgia, the NIAMS that between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed are women and that sufferers are most often diagnosed in middle age. Doctors may prescribe medication to help women fight pain resulting

from fibromyalgia, and there are some additional ways to combat that pain as well. • Get enough sleep. The NIAMS says the getting enough sleep can help ease the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. To ensure a better night’s sleep, women can adopt sleep schedules so they go to bed

and wake up at the same time each day, including on weekends and during vacations. Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, as both substances can make it more difficult to sleep soundly. In addition, avoid reading or working while in bed, as such activities can stimulate the body, making it harder to fall asleep as a result. • Exercise regularly. Exercising while in pain may seem counterintuitive, but the NIAMS notes that numerous studies have indicated that regular exer-

cise is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia. When beginning a new exercise regimen, take things slowly at first, gradually building up your endurance levels and amping up the intensity of your workouts as your body acclimates itself to exercise. • Change your diet. Some women suffering from fibromyalgia have reported feeling better when they began to avoid certain foods, though the NIAMS points out that there is no specific diet connected to reducing fibromyalgia-related pain. The

AARP notes that foods such as red grapes and cherries and herbs and spices, such as ginger and turmeric, can help aging women combat pain. • Examine your work space. Working women who are dealing with fibromyalgia may benefit by examining their work spaces and adapting those spaces to make them more comfortable. Replace desk chairs if they do not provide adequate support and speak with an occupation therapist regarding other ways to make work stations more comfortable.

3 HEART HEALTH TIPS FOR WOMEN

Heart disease may be something most commonly associated with men, but it can be deadly for women as well. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is to blame for one in every four female deaths in the United States. Americans’ female neighbors to the north also are not immune from heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for Canadian women. Recognizing the threat that heart disease poses is a great first step for women who want to avoid becoming one of the hundreds of thousands of women who lose their lives to heart disease each year. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers the following advice to women looking to prioritize their heart health. 1. Consume a heartfriendly diet. Thanks to food labels, it’s easier than ever for women to consume heart-healthy diets. When examining labels, look for foods that are low in sodium and sugar. When planning meals, avoid

foods that are high in trans fats. In 2015, the FDA ruled that trans fats were not recognized as safe for use in human foods and gave manufacturers three years to remove them from their products. At press time, no such ban exists in Canada, though information regarding trans fats must be included on Canadian food labels. The Cleveland Clinic advises consumers to check labels for “partially hydrogenated oils,” which are a hidden source of trans fats. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic notes that foods such as cakes, pies, cookies, biscuits, microwavable breakfast sandwiches, and many types of crackers contain trans fats. 2. Take existing conditions seriously. Certain conditions can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. While women may not be able to turn back the clocks and prevent these conditions from developing, they can take them for the serious threat they are and do their best to manage them. High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can increase a woman’s

risk for heart disease. Take medications as directed, monitor blood sugar levels if you have diabetes and routinely have your blood pressure and cholesterol tested to ensure any preexisting conditions are not increasing your risk for heart disease. 3. Discuss aspirin intake. The FDA notes that many physicians prescribe aspirin to lower patients’ risk of heart disease, clot-related strokes and other problems related to cardiovascular disease. However, there are risks associated with longterm aspirin use, and such risks should be discussed with a physician. According to the FDA, bleeding in the stomach, bleeding in the brain, kidney failure, and certain types of stroke are some of the potential side effects of long-term aspirin use. Such side effects may never appear, but the risk that they might makes discussing the pros and cons of aspirin well worth it. Women can learn more about heart disease by visiting www.fda.gov.

COMMON ASTHMA TRIGGERS AND POTENTIAL CAUSES

Asthma, a chronic lung disease that results in inflamed and narrowed air passages, affects millions of people around the world. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute notes that more than 25 million people in the United States have asthma. Asthma is also prevalent in Canada, where the Asthma Society of Canada says more than three million people currently have asthma. When airways narrow and swell, they can produce extra mucus. Breathing becomes quite difficult when asthma is present. The Mayo Clinic says that asthma is just a minor nuisance for some people, while others may experience life-threatening attacks. Recognizing potential triggers and avoiding them can help control symptoms. The changing of seasons can be a tricky time for asthma sufferers because of the increase in air irritants. Pollen and mold spores are known asthma triggers. Spring cleaning around the

17

house also may trigger an attack if dust, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste are stirred up. People who are allergic to certain substances also may discover these same allergens can trigger asthma attacks. Irritants in the environment also can bring on such attacks. The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America indicates that, while people may not be allergic to certain irritants, irritants can bother inflamed and sensitive air ways. Cigarette smoke, wood fires, charcoal grills, smog, strong fumes, and chemicals also may trigger asthma attacks. People with asthma also must take care when exercising or when they develop re spi r ator y i l l n e ss e s . Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction can appear after several minutes of sustained exercise. The AAFA also notes that colds, flu and sinus infections are among the most common asthma triggers in children. Although many asthma triggers are known, researchers continue to explore what causes asthma. The NHLBI says that people may be more likely to develop asthma if: • They have atopy, an inherited tendency to develop allergies. • Their parents have asthma . • They were exposed to certain respiratory infections during their childhood. • They had contact with allergens while their immune

systems were developing. A theory known as the “hygiene hypothesis” suggests another potential cause for asthma. Researchers say that growing concerns with hygiene and sanitation have removed many of the types of environmental exposures that once helped children develop strong immune systems. As a result, an increased risk for atopy and asthma has surfaced. Asthma sufferers can try to avoid common triggers and may find that medication and other lifestyle changes can help control their symptoms.

SIGNS OF STRESS THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED The American Institute of Stress notes that various disorders, both emotional and physical, have been linked to stress. Such disorders include depression, stroke, hypertension, and anxiety, among others. In its 2015 St ress in America™ survey, the American Psychological Association found that money, stress and family responsibilities are the three most common stressors. While the symptoms of stress are uncomfortable and potentially very dangerous, the APA notes that such indicators also serve as a warning from the body that it needs maintenance and extra care. The following are some of the ways the body might be telling adults to step back

and make an effort to relieve stress. • Headaches, muscle tension, neck or back pain: Some headaches or aches and pains might be mere nuisances or indicative of issues unrelated to stress. But when such symptoms are accompanied by stress, this could be the body’s way of alerting men and women that the stress is approaching unhealthy levels. The AIS notes that when a person is under stress, his or her muscles tense up. The contraction of these muscles for extended periods of time can trigger tension headaches and migraines, among other things. • Chest pains and/or rapid heartbeat: Chest pains and rapid heartbeat may indicate various problems, including

stress. This happens when the body is stressed because stress causes the nervous system to signal the adrenal glands to release hormones that make the heart beat faster and increase blood pressure.

WALK-IN OR CALL AHEAD

• Difficulty falling or staying asleep: Men and women who are feeling stressed out and also experiencing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep should consult their physicians about ways to alleviate that

stress. When strategies to alleviate stress are successful, adults should be able to return to normal, healthy sleeping patterns. • Increased frequency of colds: Stress can attack the body’s immune system, making it increasingly vulnerable to colds. The AIS also notes that a weakened immune system also makes the body more susceptible to additional viral disorders, including herpes, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. • Loss of appetite or overeating: Stress can affect the gastrointestinal system in various ways, including influencing appetite. While not all problems with appetite

are indicative of a body that is overstressed, stress can prompt some people to eat much more than they normally do, while others may eat considerably less than they normally would. • Diarrhea or constipation: Another indicator that stress is compromising the gastrointestinal system is diarrhea or constipation. Again, while these problems are not exclusive to sufferers of stress, when a person is under stress, this can affect which nutrients the body can successfully absorb and how quickly food is metabolized. This can cause some people to experience diarrhea, while others may be constipated.

Remove stems from spinach leaves and wash leaves thoroughly. Pat dry and tear into bite-size pieces. Combine spinach and strawberries in large bowl, tossing gently. Combine vinaigrette ingredients in container of electric blender; cover and process at low speed 30 seconds. Drizzle dressing over salad; toss gently. Yield: 4 to 6 servings.

Modern Beaten Biscuits 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 cup cold solid vegetable shortening 1/4 cup half-and-half 1/4 cup ice water

Place flour, sugar, salt and baking powder in food processor fitted with metal blade. Cover and process 1 second to mix. Add shortening; cover and process 5 to 6 seconds, or until mixture resembles coarse meal. With food processor running, add half-and-half and ice water in a stream through the food chute. Process until dough forms a ball. Continue processing 2 additional minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F. Turn dough out onto lightly floured board. Roll dough out to 1/4-inch thickness; fold dough over on itself to make 2 layers. Cut dough with 1¾-inch biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet; prick each biscuit 2 or 3 times with tines of a fork. Bake for 30 minutes, or until biscuits are lightly browned. Yield: about 2 dozen.

Marinated Asparagus Spears

1 lb. fresh, thin asparagus spears Marinade: 1/4 cup cider vinegar 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. white pepper

1/4 tsp. garlic powder 2 T. diced pimiento 1 T. minced fresh parsley

Snap off tough ends of asparagus. Cook asparagus, covered, in boiling water 6 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Drain well and arrange spears in shallow dish. Combine marinade ingredients, stirring well. Pour dressing over asparagus; cover, and refrigerate overnight. Serve asparagus over shredded lettuce or with slotted spoon. Yield: 4 servings.

Mint Juleps 1 cup lightly packed fresh mint sprigs 1-1/2 cups water 1 cup sugar

1-1/2 gallons crushed ice 1-1/2 quarts bourbon Sprigs of fresh mint

Place 1 cup lightly packed mint sprigs in heavy saucepan; crush mint with fingers or bruise with back of spoon. Add 1½ cups water to saucepan; bring mixture to boil. Cook, covered, 5 minutes. Add sugar, stirring well; return to boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes. Let syrup cool. Place mint syrup in small bowl or jar; cover and let stand 4 to 6 hours. Strain mixture, discarding mint and saving syrup. To serve, fill each julep cup or small glass with 1 cup crushed ice. Add 1 T. syrup and 1/4 cup bourbon for each serving, stirring gently. Garnish with sprigs of fresh mint. Yield: 24 servings. ***

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved poet William Wordsworth, best known for helping to launch the Romantic age in English literature, who made the following sage observation: "The best portion of a good man's life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love." • The world's largest bird, the ostrich, may not be able to fly, but that

doesn't mean its wings are useless. As the fastest bird on land, the ostrich uses its wings for balance while slowing down and making turns as it runs at speeds of up to 45 mph. • In 1994, a man named Robert Puelo started cursing and shouting at employees in a convenience store. When the employees (understandably) threatened to call the

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Temper your typical Aries urge to charge into a situation and demand answers. Instead, let the Lamb’s gentler self emerge to deal with a problem that requires delicacy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You are aware of what’s going on, so continue to stand by your earlier decision, no matter how persuasive the counterarguments might be. Money pressures soon will ease. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) By all means, have fun and enjoy your newly expanded social life. But don’t forget that some people are depending on you to keep promises that are very important to them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You need to wait patiently for an answer to a workplace problem and not push for a decision. Remember: Time is on your side. A financial matter needs closer attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You now have information that can influence that decision you planned to make. But the clever Cat will consult a trusted friend or family member before making a major move. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Good news: You’re finding that more doors are opening for you to show what you can do, and you don’t even have to knock very hard to get the attention you’re seeking. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your gift for creating order out

police, the man stole a hot dog and ran out. The police were called, and upon arrival, they discovered Puelo outside the store, unconscious and turning purple. Paramedics were called, but by the time they arrived, it was too late; the man had choked to death on his stolen sausage. • Some gourmets claim that the most delicious meat they've ever eaten is roast monkey. • Those who study such things say that when a man and a woman who have been romantically involved break up, the pair are more likely to remain friends if it's the

of chaos will help you deal with a sudden rush of responsibilities that would threaten someone less able to balance his or her priorities. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. Your energy levels are coming right back up to normal -- just in time to help you tackle some worthwhile challenges and make some important choices. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sage Sagittarian should demand a full explanation of inconsistencies that might be cropping up in what had seemed to be a straightforward deal. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A conflict between obligations to family and to the job can create stressful problems. Best advice: Balance your dual priorities so that one doesn’t outweigh the other. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t guess, speculate or gossip about that “mystery” situation at the workplace. Bide your time. An explanation will be forthcoming very soon. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Boredom might be creeping in and causing you to lose interest in a repeat project. Deal with it by flipping over your usual routine and finding a new way to do an old task. BORN THIS WEEK: You can warm the coldest heart with your lyrical voice and bright smile. You find yourself at home, wherever you are. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

woman who initiated the split. • You might be surprised to learn that light doesn't always travel at the speed of light. In fact, light has been recorded traveling as slow as 38 mph. • The word "widow" comes to modern English via the Old English word "widewe," which in turn comes from a Sanskrit term meaning "empty." Thought for the Day: "The great thing about getting older is that you don't lose all the other ages you've been." — Madeleine L'Engle © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
