The public was invited to continue celebrating the history of Centralia, Illinois during the Fourth Annual Locust Street Historical Fair held last Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. along Locust Street. Walking tours were conducted and presentations were given on several historic buildings. The Civil War Reenactors of Marion County fired a cannon set up outside the Centralia Area Historical Museum. Many actors portraying past Centralians were dressed in historic costumes. Old fashioned craft items and historic photos were on sale, and Locust Street was lined with antique cars. Pictured are scenes from this year's event. Bottom right is an old car motor.

SHIMKUS VOTES TO TURN THE PAGE ON OBAMA-ERA SPENDING Last week the House of Representatives approved the last ever federal spending bill based upon an Obama-era budget. The bipartisan omnibus appropriations bill will keep the government running through September 30, 2017. “My constituents are fed up with massive, must-pass bills that spend too much

of their hard-earned money on too many things the federal government has no business being involved in,” said Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15). “But as President Trump tweeted this week, ‘the reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate

Submitted Photo

Accepting the donation from Krezter are Veterans Tribute Committee members (L to R) Donna Matanane, Chuck Simpson, Joe Kurwicki, Bob Netemeyer, Agnes White, Dr. Dee Boswell, Don Berdeaux, Donna Dodson, Bill Boyles, Lester Kretzer, and Donna Kretzer. The Jim Beasley Veterans Tribute has accepted a special handmade American Flag afghan prepared by Donna Kretzer of Odin. Kretzer presented the afghan to Tribute committee co-chair Jim Beasley and members Dr. Dee Boswell to be used by the committee as a fundraiser. This is the second afghan that Kretzer has made for the Tribute, which honors veterans who have connec-

tions to the counties of Bond, Clinton, Fayette, Marion and Washington. Since it was established nearly ten years ago, the Jim Beasley Veterans Tribute Committee has been committed to constructing a permanent honor for area veterans. Currently the Tribute features two wall with more than 26,000 names, a bronze eagle and service seals. The Tribute Committee is currently

raising funds to purchase the granite paneling, as well as collecting names to place on three additional walls constructed on the south end of the Tribute. Members of the Jim Beasley Veterans Tribute Steering committee are shown accepting the donation of a crocheted patriotic afghan presented to the committee by Donna Kretzer.

most serious situations,” said Dr. Gregory J. Jurkovich, board chair, National Trauma Institute; fellow, Amer ican C ol lege of Surgeons; and professor and vice chairman, Department of Surgery, University of California Davis Health. “Blood products can only be provided by generous donors, so I urge you to roll up a sleeve and help save lives.” In 2014, donated blood helped save Ethan Moser’s life after his personal watercraft collided with the boat carrying his family. He suffered massive blood loss due to a severed femoral artery and other serious injuries. Moser received 160 transfusions of blood and blood products. While his recovery continues, Moser remains grateful to the generous donors who provided the blood he received. “I’m here simply because there was enough blood available to replenish what I lost,” he said. “You never know when an accident’s going to happen, so please donate today to be sure blood is available for those who will need it.” Blood and platelet donors of all types are currently needed. Those who come out to donate blood or platelets by May 14 will have a chance to win one of three $1,000 gift card shopping sprees from GiftCertificates.com. Donation appointments can be scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood. org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). D u r i n g Tr a u m a Awareness Month in May, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to help ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients with traumatic injuries and other serious medical needs by donating blood or platelets. According to the National Trauma Institute, trauma accounts for approximately 41 million emergency department visits and 2.3 million hospital admissions in the U.S. annually. “A single car accident victim can need as many as 100 units of blood,” said Nick Gehrig, communications director, Red Cross Blood Services. “In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma.” O negative red blood cells and AB plasma can be transfused into any patient, regardless of blood type, making donors with these universal blood types an important part of the Red Cross trauma team. Less than 7 percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood. Platelets may also be needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding. Because platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, there is a constant – often critical – need to keep up with hospital demand. “As a trauma surgeon, I know that a readily available blood supply can mean the difference between life and death for patients in the

Mother's Day Breakfast Sunday is the special day to do something for Mom; it's her day! Mum's the word when you make a special Mother's Day dinner. It's as easy as ABC if you plan ahead and follow the recipes below. Why not start with breakfast! Start with fresh squeezed orange juice or any other favorite juice for Mom. Throw in a puffy omelet, then add a side of healthy turkey bacon, beaten biscuits and a side of hash brown potatoes. Yum! It's a great way to start Mother's Day!

Puffy Omelet 8 large eggs 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar 2 T. all-purpose flour 1 T. cornstarch

DQ.com

1/2 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. ground black pepper 1 T. butter or margarine

Heat the oven to 350°F. Separate the eggs, placing the whites in a large bowl and the yolks in a small bowl. Let them warm to room temperature. With an electric mixer at high speed, beat the whites and the cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. With the same beaters, beat together the yolks, flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper until smooth. In a heavy 10-inch skillet with an oven-safe handle, melt the butter, tilting the skillet to grease the bottom and side of the pan. Fold the yolk mixture into the whites. Spoon the mixture into the skillet. Bake the omelet 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center seems firm when the skillet is gently tapped. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings.

Beaten Biscuits 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/3 cup vegetable shortening or lard 1/4 cup ice water 1/4 cup milk

Heat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. In a food processor, with the chopping blade, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add the shortening and process just until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the water and milk, a little at a time, until the dough balls up. Continue to process the dough until it is smooth, elastic, and slightly blistered. On a floured surface, with a floured rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/2-inch thickness. With a floured 2-inch cutter, cut dough into rounds. Place the biscuits, 1 inch apart, on the greased baking sheet. Pat the dough scraps together, reroll, and cut out more biscuits. With a fork, pierce each biscuit twice in a parallel row. Bake the biscuits 30 to 35 minutes, or until they start to brown on top and are golden brown on the bottom. Makes about 1½ dozen biscuits.

Hash Brown Potatoes 4 to 5 T. vegetable oil 1/2 tsp. salt

Centralia Dairy Queen

4 cups coarsely shredded, peeled, boiled baking potatoes

In a 10-inch skillet or on a griddle, heat 2 T. oil over medium-high heat. Add two 1-cup mounds of potatoes and, with a large pancake turner, shape each into a rectangle about 3/4-inch thick. Press the mounds to make the potatoes stick together; fry until the bottoms are crisp, about 8 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle the potatoes lightly with salt. Turn and brown the other side, adding more oil if necessary. Transfer the hash browns to serving plates and cook the remaining potatoes. Makes 4 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. with that. They view themselves as a victim or a born loser doomed to bad luck. But the good news is that Christ came to redeem us and bring us into God’s favor. “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for

us: for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’ that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, . . .” (Galatians 3:14-15) This is the unmerited favor of God. When one receives Christ as their Savior and Lord, they are put in Christ and receive the blessing of Abraham and the indwelling of the Spirit. Now that’s favor. God promised to make his children the “head and not the tail.” “The lord will make you the head not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord

your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.” (Deuteronomy 28:13) The apostle Peter tells us how to walk in the favor of God. (I Peter 5:5-11) Follow these scriptural steps. HONOR YOUR ELDERS. “In the same way . . . submit yourselves to your elders.” (I Peter 5:5) To walk in God’s favor one must honor those in authority over them and show respect. “God opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble.” (I Peter 5:5)

Wednesday, May 10, 2017 An attitude of honor brings the favor of God. H U M B L E YO U RSELVES. Peter spoke from experience, “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another because, God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (I Peter 5:5-6) A key factor to God’s favor then is to be humble. We have this assurance, “That he may lift you up in due time.” (I Peter 5:6) Joseph gained God’s favor even though he spent 13 years in prison. (Genesis 50:19-20) God has a ‘due’ time for you. HEAP YOUR CARES ON GOD. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (I Peter 5:7) While in a restaurant recently, I observed a touching scene of a young mother comforting her distraught son. She held her toddler in her lap and hugged and kissed him until he quieted down. Abba, “daddy”, Father cares for you even more than that mother cared for her son. “Cast your cares on him” by faith and prayer. A few days ago, my truck was in the repair shop and it sounded like it could cost several hundred dollars to fix it. In prayer, I cast a heap of anxiety on God. I received a call from the mechanic and he told me that he had found the problem and fixed it for

only $30. I call that the favor of God. HOLD UP THE DEVIL’S ADVANCE. Peter warns us, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (I Peter 5:8) Don’t allow the devil to beat up on you or run over you roughshod. There is something you can do, “Resist him, standing firm in the faith.” (I Peter 5:8) James tells us, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7) You are highly favored of the Lord. In Jesus’ name, you have authority over the enemy. H O P E I N G O D’ S GRACE. Peter assures us, “And the God of all grace, who called you . . . after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.” (I Peter 5:10-11) Hope in God. Followers of Christ are not exempt from suffering. But God has a purpose in all of it. (Romans 8:28) God promises to restore anything lost, to strengthen you and make you steadfast. (Philippians 4:13) By grace you walk in the favor of God. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

MURRAY PARENTS' ASSOCIATION SPONSORS MEMORIAL WAY TREE DEDICATION On Sunday, April 30th a Memor i a l Way Tre e Dedication was held at Murray Center, sponsored by the Murray Parents' Association. Last summer the group decided to sponsor a tree planting to honor residents, staff, or family members, both living and deceased. The original plan was for 50 trees to be planted in the entrance way to the cottages and administration building. Due to an overwhelming demand, 65 Hardy Cleveland Pear Trees were planted last fall. Trees were purchased by family members, guardians, staff and community members in memory of someone who had passed away or in honor of someone still living. The ceremony began wit h R it a Win keler, President of the Murray Parents' Association thanking everyone for their continued support of Murray Center. Center Director Mary Ann Smith, said the planting of the trees symbolized a new beginning at Murray, and celebrated the belief that Murray would be around for a long time, as Cleveland pear trees frequently live for over twenty years. Some of the trees that were removed to make way for the new trees had been in place since the beginning of the center over 50 years ago. Parents and family members came from across the country to attend the ceremony ; some coming from Kansas, North Caroline and Texas as well as from across the state of Illinois. Kay Munie, one of the founders of the MPA, came with all of her children, and this was the first time all the siblings were all together with her in several years. Two of her daughters, Angie and Madonna live at Murray Center. Tammy McClain, a resident on Apple Cottage enjoyed a visit from her siblings who traveled from Texas to spend the day with her. Rep. Charlie Meier, who purchased a tree to honor his parents, also spoke to the crowd at the end of the ceremony, and announced he was purchasing another tree in honor of the late Barby Brown, one of the wards of the state residents who was moved from Murray Center, during the closure attempt. Barby died shortly after

speakOUT letters to the editor

Dear Editor, A week or so ago one of your contributors in Speak Out offered an article comparing Obama and Trump playing golf. It seems like he was comparing Obama playing in DC and Trump playing in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. This got me to thinking, so I googled for more about what he was offering. I found a very similar article posted by CNN (Clinton News Network). I got to wondering, since I’m not part of either President’s personal group. So I need to rely on several news sources and profess to be short of facts. I do not subscribe to CNN because I would like to hear the entire story. Here is partial information to the best of my ability. 1. The Christmas Vacation trip to “The Islands” is 4,838 miles and one December the Obamas took separate planes. Total mileage would be about

43,500 total miles. The trip to Florida is right at 1,000 miles so Trump will have to go 44 times as a vacation to equal Obama. This study doesn’t include trips to Martha’s Vineyard. 2. Obama played golf every day, on vacation, so that would be a minimum of at least 63 days. So far Trump has played golf one time that we know about. The Japanese leader requested the game and the Chinese Leader did not ask to play. P.S. Obama seemed to play about every day in DC. Trump seems to have worked every day and I’m not aware of even one outing. 3. When away from the White House, Trump stays in a place he owns. On the other hand, do the voters pay for the Obamas' lodging? Maybe Democrats owned these places. There are better ways to compare between Obama and

Trump than the inferred cost of flying. Let us wait 4 or 8 years before we compare the impact on the United States of these two Presidents. We should give our current President a chance to lead this great nation and consider facts as opposed to opinion or incomplete comparison. P.S. Everyone’s contribution to Speak Out is valued as opposed to rioting to harm opposing views. A signing ceremony for Trump's healthcare bill (American Health Care Act or AHCA) was held at the White House last Friday, but let's not get too excited for a number of reasons. One is the next step of getting through the Senate, which is iffy! The second reason is this is a healthcare bill that needs a lot of work. And no, I'm not saying keep Obamacare, which I'll say again is a total disaster, and it started that way. This year alone, in some states there will be a 50% increase in premiums. But on Trump's bill, frankly, I have more questions than answers, and I realize a lot of you have as many questions. I'm sure the final draft of this bill will look very different in the end than it does right now. A few points that Tom Price, Secretary of Health and Human Services, made are important. If you have Medicaid, VA insurance or Medicare, little will change. The very young will be less affected, and from the ages of 55 to 65 is questionable. From what I can see, this bill looks like it puts healthcare back in the hands of the doctors, patients and families instead of the federal government. I also realize and know personally through research that under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) known as Obamacare, many doctors and hospitals won't accept it. As per Medicaid, two out of three doctors hesitate to accept it at all, especially specialists. The goal is and should be to get people on private,

reasonable insurance. As per pre-existing conditions, although the liberal media is spinning their normal craziness, I see little change on this issue. But as I said in the beginning of this column, I have more questions than answers! What I believe to be important to point out today is the truth instead of spinning. Keep in mind what Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said, "I'm going to read the house bill, find out what it costs, and when I find good ideas there, why we'll borrow them. But basically, we're writing our own bill." Which beats the hell out of then and now Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi referring to Obamacare when she said, "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy." And speaking of unprofessionalism, going back to the new healthcare bill and childish behavior, nothing speaks more of fifth grade mentality than the behavior of the House Democrats when, after the bill passed, they took a standing position and started waving and singing bye-bye to House Republicans. And before this bill is revised in the Senate, there is already a heavy ad campaign planned to hit before any revision of the plan. The bottom line is Obamacare is collapsing, and that is a fact! Yet I'm the first one to say Trump's bill faces an uncertain future, and only time will tell. But only a fool doesn't realize something

has to be done, and you have to start somewhere. Moving on to France. Even though I'm pushing for Marine Le Pen, it's looking good for Emmanuel Macron, the far left candidate. However, I'm hoping the people of France wake up and realize what pro-immigration has done for them and all of Europe. One would think they would "get it" with all the terrorist attacks. Both candidates stopped campaigning at midnight Friday. Is either choice good? Le Pen is anti-immigration, anti-European Union platform. Macron is progressive and has a proEuropean Union stance. At press time it was reported Macron was elected the new President. Sorry to say, in my opinion, France will be sorry! And last but not least, on to late night show host Stephen Colbert. But in the same category are Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers. Everyone should be fed up with their "vile" and "hatefilled jokes" about President Donald Trump. But I don't think anyone can go any lower than Stephen Colbert and what he said last week. Unfortunately, they all live in what someone called a " C o a s t a l Bu b bl e . " How much lower can the extreme leftists go? Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Motherʼs Day Sunday, May 14th

THE HISTORY OF MOTHER'S DAY The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called “Mothering Sunday.” Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, “Mothering Sunday” honored the mothers of England. During this time many of England’s poor worked as servants for the wealthy.

As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor

the “Mother Church” - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honoring their mothers as well as the church. In the United States Mother’s Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic) as a day

dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother’s Day meetings in Boston, Mass every year. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death, the second Sunday of May. By the next year

Mother’s Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother’s Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a national holiday that was to be held

each year on the second Sunday of May. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

CHOOSING FLOWERS FOR MOM Mother’s Day is an annual holiday that honors motherhood and provides an opportunity for men, women and children to show their mothers how much they appreciate them. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed

from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. While Mother’s Day traditions have changed since Jarvis first proposed the holiday, many people feel it’s customary to give mothers gifts on Mother’s Day, when moms take the day off from chores and relax with their families. Flowers make for popular Mother’s Day gifts, and well-wishers who want to give the special women in their lives flowers this year can consider a host of varieties. Carnations Carnations are popular Mother’s Day flowers, perhaps because they are available in a number of colors. That means it’s highly likely sons, daugh-

ters, husbands and others gifting moms this Mother’s Day can find some carnations in Mom’s favorite color. Ask your florist about what each carnation color symbolizes, as each has its own unique meaning. Pink carnations, for example, are believed to symbolize a mother’s love.

which Mother’s Day takes place while also providing a cheerful look that’s perfect for Mother’s Day floral bouquets. Daffodils can be given on their own or added to mixed bouquets. Daffodils also last quite a while when cared for correctly, giving moms more than just a few days to enjoy their bouquets.

Roses Few mothers can resist roses, making them one of the more popular flowers come Mother’s Day. Roses are symbolic of love and make the perfect floral gift for mothers who like traditional flowers. If you want to spice things up, order a bouquet made up of roses of various colors.

Freesia Like daffodils, freesia are long-lasting, meaning mothers will still be enjoying them long after Mother’s Day has come and gone. The inviting fragrance of freesia makes bouquets of these flowers popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts. Freesia also come in many colors, proving Mother’s Day gift givers a greater chance of finding flowers their mothers will love.

Daffodils Yellow is synonymous with spring, and daffodils can highlight the season in

Kiersh values your pen at $175, but this may be a little low since fountain pens have become a hot collectible and values have steadily risen. I occasionally write with a "Big Red" from the

WHAT YOU CAN TEACH YOUR GRANDCHILD ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY

www.socialsecurity.gov/multimedia/webinars/social_security_101.html.

BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER, MT. VERNON, IL

Share Your Retirement Stories Social Security replaces about 40 percent of an average worker’s income, but financial planners suggest that most retirees need about 70 percent to live comfortably in retirement. Americans need more than Social Security to achieve that comfortable retirement. They need private pensions, savings, and investments. That means starting to save early and monitoring your Social Security record for accuracy. You can share lessons from your own life about saving and planning for retirement. Remember, the best place anyone of any age can visit for quick, easy information about Social Security is www.socialsecurity.gov. Your personal stories about how you prepared for retirement and what role Social Security plays can help them see what is needed for a secure financial future. Give them the gift of financial literacy today.

One of the greatest gifts you can give a grandchild is the gift of financial literacy. Helping them save money early in life and showing them how to make wise spending decisions goes a long way toward a bright financial future. As they get older, they may want to save for special purchases or their college education. You can encourage them when they get their first job to begin saving for the future, including their retirement. Planning for the Future with my Social Security When you celebrate their graduation from high school, you can also remind them to set up a my Social Security account. They need to be age 18 or older, have a U. S. mailing address and a valid email address, and have a Social Security number. And while their retirement is many years away, you can explain the importance of

reviewing their earnings record each year since Social Security uses the record of earnings to compute their future benefits. As they start their first major job and begin saving, they’ll be able to monitor the growth of the estimates of benefits available to them. You can access my Social Security at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Saving For Retirement with myRA The U. S. Treasury recently introduced a retirement savings account for a simple, safe, and affordable way to save for retirement. It’s perfect for people whose employer doesn’t offer a savings plan. There are no costs or fees to open and maintain a myRA account. The account won’t lose money and is backed by the U. S. Treasury. The individual chooses the amount to save. The account is portable and moves with them from job to job. The account owner

can withdraw the money they put in without tax or penalty. You can learn more about myRA at www.myra.gov. Share How Social Security Works You can share your knowledge about Social Security with your young savers by explaining how the program works and how it has worked for you. About 96 percent of all Americans are covered by Social Security. Social Security is financed through workers’ contributions , which are matched by their employers. We use the contributions to pay current benefits. Any unused money goes into a trust fund. Nearly all working people pay Social Security taxes and about 61 million people receive monthly Social Security benefits. About 42 million of those beneficiaries are retirees and their families. Encourage them to watch our Social Security 101 video at

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two cats, one of whom suffers from a number of health conditions, including diabetes. The cost of her care is way more than that of my other cat, but I will pay it no matter what. Still, it's sometimes difficult to cover veterinary bills and medications. Do you have any suggestions? — Greg in Austin, Texas DEAR GREG: IPet care costs, especially pet health care, have risen steadily over the past several years. Even routine care can take a bite out of your budget. And in all but a few cases, pet owners must bear the cost of care.

You do have a few immediate options: • Negotiate payments or care costs with the vet. While routine visits are usually required to be paid for up front, the vet may be willing to work with an owner to pay for treatment of acute illnesses or longterm conditions. • Financing through a service like CareCredit can close the gap between a vet visit and your next paycheck. Read the terms carefully, though; you may be better off paying with a major credit card when it comes to interest rates. • Pet insurance can ease the financial burden of pet care, although you may only be able to insure your healthy cat. This insurance reimburses you for medical costs after treatment, so you'll still need to have a way to pay up front for your cats' care. Consumers Advocate recently rated its top 10 insurers. What if you need more assistance in paying for your pets' care? Low-cost vaccination clinics in your area can help with routine

care; assistance for more complex issues is provided by some animal care fa-

cilities. BestFriends.org lists resources by state. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

You might well be surprised at what you could learn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your resolute determination to stick by a position might make some people uncomfortable. But if you’re proved right (as I expect you to be), a lot of changes will tilt in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel conflicted between what you want to do and what you should do. Best advice: Honor your obligations first. Then go ahead and enjoy your well-earned rewards. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That financial matter still needs to be sorted out before you can consider any major monetary moves. Pressures ease midweek, with news about a potential career change. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A workplace problem threatens to derail your well-planned project. But your quick mind should lead you to a solution and get you back on track without too much delay. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An opportunity opens up but could quickly close down if you allow pessimism to override enthusiasm. A trusted friend can offer the encouragement you need. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ve come through a difficult pe-

throw out their old clothes, or even re-dye them; to get rid of any monarchist overtones, they simply started calling the color "national blue." • In New Zealand, speed bumps are commonly known as "judder bars." • The court system in the Central African Republic is having difficulty dealing with the caseloads. One of the primary problems is witchcraft. It seems that 40 percent of all prosecutions in the nation involve some form of witchcraft, including 5 percent of all juvenile cases. • Those who study such things say that the koala bear has two opposable

riod of helping others deal with their problems. Now you can concentrate on putting your energy to work on your own projects. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Forget about who’s to blame and, instead, make the first move toward patching up a misunderstanding before it creates a rift that you’ll never be able to cross. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Good news for the travel-loving Sagittarian who enjoys galloping off to new places: That trip you put off will soon be back on your schedule. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A mood change could make the gregarious Goat seek the company of just a few friends. But you charge back into the crowd for weekend fun and games. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A decision you made in good faith could come under fire. Best advice: Open your mind to other possibilities by listening to your challenger’s point of view. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You can avoid being swamped by all those tasks dangling from your line this week by tackling them one by one, according to priority. The weekend brings good news. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a fine business sense and a love of the arts. You enjoy living life to its fullest. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

thumbs on each hand. • The jobs website Glassdoor has issued a report ranking the best jobs in America, with scoring determined by combining the number of job openings, salary and overall job satisfaction rating. Unsurprisingly, the list is top-heavy with engineers and analysts. At No. 4, though, is Tax Manager, with a job satisfaction score of 4 out of a possible 5." *** Thought for the Day: "An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field." — Niels Bohr © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
