It was Ted Turner who said (and I'm paraphrasing) that if you ever have a chance to own a baseball team, you should go ahead and do it because it's a lot of fun. It's hard to argue with Ted when he's making sense. This from a guy who owns an estate larger than the state of Connecticut, who brought buffalo back to the dinner table and who once eloquently brushed aside criticism of his wife by declaring he had not, in fact, married "Hanoi Jane," he was simply making out with Barbarella on a nightly basis. To be sure, owning a baseball team puts you in an elite club. There are only 30 of them, so you don't really have the luxury of comparison shopping. When one comes up for sale, if you've got the money and you still have a little bit of the boy (or girl) who collected baseball cards in a shoebox left in you, you make the deal. A quick look at the backgrounds of the current crop of MLB franchise

By Chris Richcreek

Who was the first pitcher to finish in the top three of Cy Young voting for f ive cons ec utive seasons? 3. Cal's Jared Goff set a record in the 2015 collegefootball season for most TD passes (43) by a Pac-12 quarterback. Who had held the mark? 4. Three players have led

owners shows them to be captains (or sons of captains) of industry, legal whizzes or savvy investors. But as they often do, things got weird in Miami. The owner of the Miami Marlins, Jeffrey Loria, is considered by most observers of the game to be the worst owner in baseball. Remember the Billy Joel song, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"? It's a song that details the life of Brenda and Eddie. At one point, they manage to decorate their first home with a couple of paintings from Sears. Billy didn't know it at the time, but he was singing about Loria ... he was the guy in charge of buying the paintings for Sears. From there, he bought the Montreal Expos, killed them, bought the Marlins and despite winning a championship in 2003, has done nothing but insult the intelligence of Miami fans ever since. After NFL owner Dan Snyder, there is no more reviled owner in American sports. Not too many players own franchises — Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky being the exceptions. Two the NBA in minutes played during their rookie season. Name two of them. 5. Which team holds the record for the longest winning streak in NHL history? 6. In 2016, American Kim Rhode (women's skeet) became the second athlete to earn an individual medal in six consecutive Olympics. Who was the first to do it? 7. years after his last hit, Derek Jeter collars Jeb Bush and ponies up $1.3 billion in investment capital and suddenly the weed-cracked, empty parking lots in Miami are about to teem with new life. The fans get a team that will try to win, baseball gets their most bankable superstar back and the Bush family gets to make a few more headlines. How quickly can a Jeter/ Bush-owned Marlins team turn it around? Let's put it this way — the quickest way Jeb will ever see the inside of the White House will more than likely come via the hands and baseball mind of Jeter, and not any political action committee or otherwise wealthy donor. One can imagine that Jeb would not relish visiting the White House, current occupant considered, but you'd also have to think he'd have to feel a bit proud of the fact that he succeeded where both his older brother — a terrible owner of the Texas Rangers — and Donald Trump (who single-handedly killed the USFL) failed miserably. None of that matters in Miami. To the fan, they just got handed a real franchise with a real owner for the first time in a long time. As Ted would acknowledge ... that's a much better way of looking at things. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

KYLE MCCARTER RECOMMENDED FOR U.S. AMBASSADORSHIP TO KENYA Current Illinois State Senator and International Director of Each One Feed One, Kyle McCarter has been recommended for app o i n t m e n t a s U. S . Ambassador to Kenya. Republican members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation delivered a letter to President Donald Trump May 11 recommending Sen. McCarter. “This is a great honor and humbling experience to be recommended to continue representing the United States of America in this new role,” McCarter said. “Our country has a long friendship with Kenya that began soon after Kenya won its independence in late 1963. My family’s friendship goes back over 30 years. If President Trump selects me for this role, I would be honored to serve,” McCarter said. The letter from the Republican Members of Congress from Illinois notes Senator McCarter’s long history of working in Kenya, including founding the Each One Feed One International charity in Tharaka, Kenya. “Through his work in Kenya, he has experience negotiating with tribal chiefs and other dignitaries, along with logistical and other administrative experience working with the Kenyan government.

Additionally, he has experience working with USAID and other organizations, including Compassion International within Kenya to provide health care for over 3,000 Kenyan children.” Senator McCarter and his wife, Victoria have worked in Kenya for over 30 years. Each One Feed One International’s efforts in Kenya include an elementary school for children K-8 and assistance for hundreds of abandoned, abused and orphaned children. The charity also provides a medical clinic with comprehensive health care and support to those suffering from HIV and malaria. Additionally, the clinic provides baby immunizations and well-baby education, treating as many as 18,000 patients a year. The Illinois

Congressmen wrote that McCarter would ensure U.S. taxpayer dollars are well-spent in the country, and he will bring accountability to the aid program benefiting Kenyans. “…his experience on the ground in Kenya has provided him heightened insight into the governmental operations and other political, economic, and social realities of both Kenya and the larger region of East Africa. He has outlined specific ideas for reforms of USAID spending, including curtailing waste, fraud, and abuse within the program,” the letter stated. The letter from the Illinois Republican Congressional Delegation was presented to the White House May 10. The Ambassador post requires U.S. Senate confirmation.

SHIMKUS STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF THE AMERICAN HEALTH CARE ACT C ongressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) released the following statement after the House approved legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), known m o re c o m m o n l y a s Obamacare: “For seven years, I’ve fought to repeal all of Obamacare’s mandates, middle class taxes, abortion subsidies, insurance company bailouts, and un-

affordable, one-size-fits-all health insurance plans. I also assured my constituents that our replacement would include protections for patients with pre-existing conditions. My vote today does all of the above. “ Pa s s a g e o f t h e American Health Care Act (AHCA) is a win for President Trump, but more importantly it’s a win for the millions of Americans who are forced to buy a

product they can’t afford to use. The AHCA will empower states to offer, and patients to choose from, a broader range of affordable insurance plans that better fit each individual and family’s unique needs.” Summaries and text of the American Health Care Act and its amendments can be found at housegop. leadpages.co/healthcare/.

$36,500 AVAILABLE TO ILLINOIS TEACHERS

The Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation (IRTAF) is making $36,500 in grant money available statewide to individual public school class ro om te achers (PK-12) for the 2017-18 school year. These grants are designed for special projects the teachers might not be able to have funded through the normal budgetary process. In this time of short budgets, state shortfalls and economic and budgetary insecurity for public schools, these grants can be very helpful. “These grants won’t only assist teachers doing their work, but ultimately students will benefit as well,” Dave Davison, president of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association said. “Our goal and hope is that our state’s

teachers have the tools and resources available to inspire and empower students. With these grants, we believe better instruction will be delivered and more students will be engaged as learners.” “It’s great to know that an organization like the IRTAF supports teachers when dollars for education are so tight,” Portia Stueve, an IRTA member from Waterloo, Illinois said. “Grants like these have a ripple effect, from the teacher to the student, t hroug h t he s cho ol, through the community and t hen ultimately through the state.” To apply, download, complete, and submit the application online by visiting www.irtaonline.org. The application can be

fou n d i n t h e I RTA Foundation section. All applications must be submitted by June 1, 2017. A special committee will select the recipients of the grants. Grant awards will be presented in the fall. “Far too often teachers spend money out of their own pocket to supplement classroom and learning experiences,” Davison concluded. “Founded by teachers, the IRTAF prides itself not only by assisting retired teachers now living in poverty but the great ideas and visions teachers have for their students but are limited by lack of funds.” See more at: http://prmediarelease.com/moneyavailable-to-illinois-publicschool-teachers/#sthash. k75sa0Sp.dpuf

LOCAL AUTHOR CELEBRATES NEW BOOK

Ka sk a sk i a C ol l e ge Philosophy Instructor and lo cal author, Queen Kirkwood-Hatchett, has published her fourth book, Survival of the Inner Man. On May 6, the self-publisher officially celebrated the book’s release with a meet and greet here in Centralia. While a small gathering, the time was filled with conversation about relationships, change, and overcoming past hurts. The event was open house style and included servings of coffee and cake decorated with the book’s cover image. Attendees included Mike Warden, local author and culture docent; Pastor Linda Dabney, Clinic Director at Centralia’s Pregnancy Care Clinic; Todd Glispie, Family Truancy Mentor; and an impromptu visit by Marion County Judge Ericka Sanders. In Survival of the Inner Man, Kirkwood-Hatchett reveals how several child-

hood sexual abuse experiences impacted her life, and how she healed from them. According to Clinical Psychology, “Women who experience sexual abuse as a child are 2 to 3 times more likely to be sexually assaulted later in life.” Unfortunately, this statistic was all too real for the educator. Kirkwood-Hatchett tackles the effects of child sexual abuse (CSA) that many survivors experience such as running away from home, drug and alcohol abuse, low self-perception, promiscuity at an early age, and the attraction to toxic relationships. She also shares her personal bouts with depression as a young mother, recurring abortions, and the struggle of raising a family while trying to overcome past trauma. The 95-page read is not all doom and gloom. The self-publisher shares her poetry of hope throughout the book. She credits

writing as part of her path to healing. KirkwoodHatchett was a member of the Mt. Vernon Writer’s Club in the 1980s and 90s. It was there that the mother of three found encouragement to express herself more boldly. KirkwoodHatchett also credits her faith as a primary source of healing. Queen firmly believes your scar is proof that the wound has healed. An advocate for the prevention of CSA, Ms. Kirkwood-Hatchett is making it her mission to bring greater awareness to the issue. Sharing her story is one of the several ways she advocates for the tacit voice of victims. Next month she will do just that by co-hosting a trauma seminar in Mt. Vernon with fellow native, Carmel D. Brown, LCPC. She will also be traveling to Missouri for a book signing at the Caruthersville Public Library, her childhood hometown. Copies of her

KC INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM HOSTS CUB SCOUT PACK 260 The Kaskaskia College Industrial Technology Program recently hosted Centralia Cub Scout Pack 260. The scouts worked on requirements for their robotics belt loop. Assistant Professor of Industrial Technology Lyle Gross demonstrated how robots are used in industry. Each of the scouts were able to control a robot’s axis movement through the robot teaching pendant. They learned how robots are programmed to complete tasks used in manufacturing and warehousing. The scouts also learned about how competitive Battlebots function. These are the same style of robots frequently used during competitive robotics competitions. They were able to watch as two Sumobots were programmed and faced off in a competitionstyle match. The scouts were given a tour of the Kaskaskia College electronics and automation labs to see how the college trains students in robotics and process automation. NOW IN PROGRESS!

In the news last week... Comey. That's it! Comey, Comey, Comey after President Trump fired the FBI Director last Tuesday. In follow up interviews, the President said there were a number of reasons for the firing, one being he was always "showboating." Not the answer you would expect from probably one of the world's best showboats. I think continued frustration probably summed up the President's action. Comey, a lifelong attorney and former deputy attorney general, always seemed to be in the middle of controversy and one was never quite sure where he stood. Days after any interview, he would always come back with what he called a "clarification" as he did just before the firing. His clarification usually appeased the side of the aisle he had earlier criticized, always playing the "Washing-

If you've only followed coverage of the Republican health care bill loosely in the media, you might believe that House Republicans, after much effort, passed legislation to deny people with preexisting conditions health insurance. The issue of pre-existing conditions has dominated the debate over the GOP health care bill out of all proportion to the relatively modest provision in the legislation, which is being distorted — often willfully, sometimes ignorantly — into a threat to all that is good and true in America. The perversity of it all is that the legislation is properly understood as doing more to preser ve the Obamacare regulation on pre-existing conditions than to undermine it. The legislation maintains a federal baseline of protection in such cases, and says only that states can apply for a waiver from it, provided that they abide by certain conditions

ton Game." And what does the lame stream media focus on the whole week, but the first part of Trump's sentence about "tapes" and not the last. James Comey better hope there are no "tapes" of our conversation before he starts leaking to the press. Obviously, Trump has been livid about leaks coming out of different departments.

But during the whole week of Comey no one talked about the President's expectations that Comey would leak. Could this have been one more reason for the firing?

meant to ensure that no one is left out in the cold. Since these provisions only involve the individual insurance market, a small slice of the overall insurance picture (about 18 million are on the individual market), and merely make possible state waivers, they are inherently limited. You're not affected if you get insurance through your employer (155 million people), or through Medicaid or Medicare. You're not affected if you live in a state that doesn't request the waiver (many won't). Even if you buy insurance on the individual market and live in a state that gets a waiver, you're not affected if you've maintained insurance coverage continuously and not had a gap in coverage longer than 63 days. By this point, we're talking about a tiny fraction of the population. If you do have a pre-existing condition in a waiver state and haven't had continuous coverage, you can be charged more by your insurer only the first year. The state will have access to $8 billion in federal funds explicitly to ease the cost of your insurance, and must further have a high-risk pool or similar program to mitigate insurance costs for the sick.

Clearly, if Republicans set out to recklessly endanger the well-being of people with pre-existing conditions, they didn't do a very good job of it. The purpose of these provisions isn't to punish the sick, but to create an incentive for people to buy insurance while they are healthy. (The Obamacare exchanges are failing because the tangle of regulations drove up costs and made insurance economically unappealing to the young and healthy.) It takes all of five minutes to understand the basics of the House bill on pre-existing conditions, yet it has been subject to wildly ill-informed and deceptive attacks. Rep. Frank Pallone of New Jersey said the bill would hurt 129 million people with pre-existing conditions, an exaggerated figure that assumes every single one of them would be harmed by the House bill. There are certainly legitimate criticisms to be made of the House bill, and ample room for the Senate to improve it, especially by boosting its coverage numbers. But it is not an act of heedless cruelty against the sick. As for its critics, their reflex to demagogic dishonesty isn't a pre-existing condition, just an ingrained habit.

On to our friend, Editor of the National Review Rich Lowry, about healthcare preexisting conditions.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Lesson from Jonah Near Bevier, MO is a whimsical sign. Suspended from a giant replica of a rod and reel is a life-like cutout of a large fish with the inscription – “Tall Tales Bait Shop”. Many fishermen have tall tales of the big fish they have caught. But the amazing story of Jonah being swallowed by a great fish is no tall tale. It is the gospel truth. The greatest authority of all, Jesus Christ himself referred to Jonah and the great fish, and said that it was also a sign of Jesus, the Messiah. Consider some of the lessons we can learn from Jonah. IT DOESN’T PAY TO RUN FROM GOD. God called the prophet Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh and cry against it for its wickedness. Jonah didn’t want to go because he knew that God is merciful and, if the people repented, God would spare the city from destruction. Jonah despised the wicked antagonists of the Jews. So, he booked passage on a ship going to Tarshish, the opposite direction. “But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.” (Jonah 1:1-3) Jonah was running from God and His will. There is an awful price to pay.

11

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

Twice in this passage we are told he was separated from the presence of the Lord. As Jonah sailed away from God’s presence, there was a great storm at sea. When the sailors realized that Jonah was the reason their ship was in peril, they prayed to God and threw Jonah overboard. But God had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. (Jonah 1:4-17) REPENTANCE FROM SIN WILL TURN THE TIDE. Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and nights. With weeds wrapped around his head and in the dark belly of the great fish, Jonah prayed, “And he said, ‘I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction and He answered me . . . yet you have brought up my life from the pit, O

Lord, my God . . . Salvation is of the Lord.” (Jonah 2:1-9) When Jonah repented, the tide was turned. “So, the Lord spoke to the fish and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.” (Jonah 2:10) Jonah went throughout Nineveh. “Then he cried out, ‘Yet 40 days and Nineveh shall be over thrown.’” (Jonah 3) The people and even the king repented of their wickedness and God spared His judgement of the great city. Are you running from God? Repent. God is merciful. (Acts 2:1-9; Romans 2:4) GOD’S COMPASSION AND MERCY KNOWS NO BOUNDS. When God spared Nineveh, Jonah became angry. He waited to see if God would destroy the inhabitants. As Jonah sat beneath the blazing sun, God began to teach Jonah a lesson. (Jonah 4) God caused a plant to grow up to shade Jonah. But the next day God sent a worm to destroy the plant. Jonah was angry. God rebuked Jonah because he had more compassion for a plant

than he had for the innocent children and livestock that could have been destroyed under the judgement of God. Here we have a revelation of the compassionate nature of God. (Isaiah 66:12-13; Lamentations 3:22; Matthew 23:27) JONAH WAS A SIGN THAT JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD. When the Jews asked Jesus to do a miracle to prove he was the Messiah, he replied, “No sign shall be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and nights is the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:38-41. As Jonah came out of the belly of the fish, on the third day, Jesus arose victorious over death, hell, and the grave. Jonah and the great fish is no tall tale and neither is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What a revelation of the power of repentance and the love of God. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I'm having a very hard time finding a new apartment where the management will allow my two cats. And those that do allow pets have really high pet fees. I'm not sure what to do. Is there a law or something that would force landlords to allow pets? After all, there are laws to keep animals off the street, but it seems like apartment rules banning pets may cause more pets to be abandoned. — Christine B., Atlanta DEAR CHRISTINE: I wish I could say there were laws like that — you make a very good case for them. But I doubt that there are any laws like that on the

books in the U.S. While some might say you just need to keep looking for an apartment that takes pets and has reasonable fees, the reality is that fewer apartments allow pets at all. A new study by the National Association of Realtors surveyed homebuyers, and found that 61 percent said, "It is very difficult or difficult to find a rental property or a homeowner association that accommodates animals." At the same time, 95 percent of buyers who are pet owners said that it's important for housing communities to allow animals. Pet owners paid about $150 a year in fees to communities — either association dues or rental applications — in 2016, the study said. But that didn't include fees like monthly dues for pets that some apartment communities charge. For now, keep looking. Some new communities are adding pet-friendly features like dog parks, while others are revisiting their

Success Sweeter! Never Tasted

Celebrate Your Graduate’s Bright Future With An Ice Cream Cake From Dairy Queen.

Cooking With Lizzie

Summer's Bounty: Yellow Squash And Tomatoes Summer is just around the corner and with it comes a bounty of fresh veggies. I've never grown yellow crookneck summer squash. This year I'm trying it, along with spaghetti squash, okra, tomatoes, pepper, green beans, and of course, my herb garden. So I've already started gathering all kinds of yellow crookneck squash recipes that I'm anxious to try. See the squash recipe below, along with some of my favorite tomato recipes.

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was French novelist — and, more significantly, journalist — Emile Zola who made the following sage observation: "One forges one's style on the terrible anvil of daily deadlines." • You might be surprised to learn that, among readers from families with incomes of at le ast $100,000, The Reader's Digest reaches more people than The Wall Street

Journal, Fortune, Inc. and Business Week combined. • Have you ever heard of the Clarke-Asimov Treaty of Park Avenue? Unless you're a fan of science fiction, you probably haven't. Legend has it that two of science fiction's Big Three, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke (poor Robert A. Heinlein missed out, it seems), were sharing a cab in New York City when they reached an

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You Ewes and Rams will find your ideas cheered by a mostly receptive flock. Those few dissenters could well be turned around by your charm and powers of persuasion. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s time for the bold and beautiful Bovine to shake off the dust of the past and shape up with new ideas for the future. This could surprise some folks, but they’ll soon adjust. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those nagging new doubts about an upcoming decision should alert you to step back (at least temporarily) so you can reassess its potential impact from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That unpleasant situation you hoped would go away by itself needs immediate attention before it affects an upcoming decision. Expect your supporters to rally around your cause. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re moving up and away from that recent setback. But remain cautious about finances. An exercise in thrift today helps cushion a possible end-of-themonth money squeeze. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You’re still dealing with overtones of pessimism that cause you to doubt your ability to make some needed changes. But the negative pressures will ease up by week’s end. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There could be some fallout from the way you handled a recent family

agreement: Each author would publicly refer to the other as the world's greatest in his specialty. This meant that Asimov touted Clarke as the world's best sciencefiction writer -- reserving second place for himself — while Clarke acknowledged Asimov as the world's best science writer — also putting himself in second place. Evidence of the agreement is found Clarke's 1972 novel "Report on Planet Three"; the dedication reads, "In accordance with the terms of the Clarke-Asimov treaty, the second-best science writer dedicates this book to the second-best science-fiction writer." • Those who study such things say that cannabis has

problem. But those who know that you were in the right won’t hesitate to step in on your behalf. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Financial strains ease by week’s end. Meanwhile, focus on cultivating that new relationship if you hope to have it blossom into something more meaningful. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Health matters once again dominate the week. Be careful not to ignore recurrences of an old problem. An almost-forgotten commitment resurfaces. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The emergence of an unusual selfish streak could dismay those close to you. Defy it -- don’t justify it -- so you can become your gracious self again. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Reassess your decision to stay with the status quo. It might seem like the sensible thing to do right now, but changes around you could make that choice a risky one. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Move decisively but cautiously when dealing with a delicate personal matter. The fewer mistakes you make now, the less likely it is that the problem will recur later on. BORN THIS WEEK: You can find beauty where many cannot. And you enjoy sharing your discovery with others. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

been used to ease childbirth pains in a variety of cultures, ranging from the Middle East to Northern Africa to East Asia -- and the evidence dates as far back as 2000 B.C. • It was the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, who first allowed the public to enter the White House. He also made sure the presidential abode was well-provided with spittoons — at least a dozen of them.
