HELP PATIENTS, HONOR LOVED ONES BY DONATING BLOOD WITH THE RED CROSS Before busy summer schedules set in, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to roll up a sleeve to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients in need. Donors of all blood types are needed now to help accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving cancer treatment. Kenneth Reed gives blood in his son’s honor. When Trace was 8 days old, he underwent heart surgery and received blood transfusions. “It’s the least I can do. If it wasn’t for donors, he wouldn’t be here with us today,” said Reed. “I don’t call it donating blood; I call it donating life.” Giving blood is an easy

and thoughtful way to honor a loved one who has relied on blood products, to follow in the example of a family member who gives regularly or to simply help others. As a thank you, those who come out to donate May 26-30 will receive a Red Cross-branded visor, while supplies last. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767). Donors can then also visit redcrossblood.org/cedarfair to enter to win one of three grand prize packages for four to Knott’s Berry Farm in California or Cedar Point in Ohio.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below.

The McLeod Summer Playhouse has exciting news. “Into the Woods” will open the 2017 season. The company has just received the rights to present the first ever professional production of the show in Southern Illinois. To take advantage of the great opportunity, MSP will launch the season with this amazing musical, replacing

the originally chosen show, The updated three-show subscription series now includes “Into the Woods,” June 16-18 and 23-25, “Sister Act,” July 7-9 and 14-16, sponsored by SIH Medical Group, and “Singin’ in the Rain,” July 27-30, co-presented by Carbondale Community Arts and MSP. These performances are in the

June 2, 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., Second Baptist Church, 605 S. 34th St., Mt. Vernon. June 6, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Rend Lake College, 468 North Kengray Parkway, Ina. June 8, 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., St. Mary's Parish Center, 1500 Main Street, Mt. Vernon.

redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are requ i re d at c h e c k - i n . Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health

histor y questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/ RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site. Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, contact Jessica Rhodes at 314-2967720 or visit redcrss.org/ driver.

C.H. Moe Theater. For performance schedule, please visit the playhouse website. Fairy tales collide in the musical, “Into the Woods,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. Cinderella, Jack (with the beanstalk), the Baker and his wife, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, two princes and a put-upon witch become entwined in a brand new re-imagined production. The recent 2014 Disney movie version

broke box office records and won an Academy Award for Meryl Streep as best actress in a supporting role. “Sister Act,” based on the movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater and book by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner with additional material by Douglas Carter Beane tells the hilarious story of a third-rate lounge singer who hides out in a convent after witnessing a gangland killing. The rousing score raises its voice with disco, R&B, and Church hymn influences. “Singin’ in the Rain,” a stage adaptation of the great movie musical, is the story of a famous film star who falls in love with an unknown actress hired to dub his leading lady’s voice. With a book by Betty Comden and Adolf Green, it has great songs by Arthur

Freed and Nacio Herb Brown including “Make ' E m L au g h ,” “G o o d Mornin'” and, the tile song, “Singin’ in the Rain.” “Pinkalicious the Musical” is a “pink-a-tastic” story that follows the perilous predicament of a young girl who turns pink from eating too many of her favorite colored cupcakes. The musical has a script by E lizab et h Kann and Victoria Kann (who also authored the children’s book). Music is by John Gregor with sharing credit for the lyrics with the authors. Subscription and individual tickets are now on sale. For performance schedule and ticket pricing, please go to the website. Tickets may be obtained at the McLeod Theater or Arena box office, by phone at 618-453-6000 during regular hours or online at playhouse.siu.edu.

Last week it was Comey, Trump, Russia, The Russians, Comey, Trump and on and on. Do the majority care? NO! However, the last I heard, on May 17 the Justice Department announced the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Meueller III as special counsel to investigate any possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government in its efforts to influence the 2016 Presidential election. Please note the key statement was to investigate the Trump campaign, not Donald Trump. Trump's response was, "This is a witch hunt and there is certainly no collusion between myself or my campaign." As for the witch hunt statement, I agree with Donald Trump. I believe it's time for the Washington rocket scientists to get on with the business of what the American people sent them to Washington to do instead of acting like a bunch of brats that didn't get their way. Many of them, e.g. Elijah Cummings, (D-MD) John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and many more, are working to undermine this administration, which I find, in Hillary Clinton's words, deplorable. And speaking of deplorable, what could be more criminal than destroying 33,000 emails, some classified, or storing a government server (also containing classified material) in someone's closet. Enough is enough. But to go back a little further — 2012 to be exact — who remembers thenPresident Obama, while speaking to a representative of Russia, saying, "I'll have

more flexibility after the election"? A microphone was on that someone didn't turn off and this statement was overheard. What the hell did that mean? Why was Obama not investigated for possible collusion when caught in his own words? Flexibility for what? If I sound fed up, I am, as many of us are. Some of the things that are happening to undermine Trump are unAmerican and hurting the U.S. Going back to the Trump investigation, I ask the following questions: 1) What's the crime? 2) What was the point of it? 3) What's the proof? None of the above exist. It's totally different with Hillary Clinton's multitude of crimes, e.g. emails, accepting contributions from foreign governments, and on and on, not to mention Benghazi. Could be an obstruction of justice isn't good reason to appoint special counsel to investigate. Who is responsible for all of the above? In my opinion, the Washington idiots, extreme liberals that instead of conversing would rather shout you down, and the liberal media that need to stop drinking the anti-Trump Kool-Aid. The first 100 days in office 80% of the news coverage was against Trump versus Obama's first 100 days at 41%. In the end, I've heard there are a million signatures on a petition to impeach Trump. My question is, for what? There was no law broken. There are only disappointed people that lost control. Moving on, speaking on a positive note, President Donald Trump gave a speech on this first international trip.

The speech was given in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, hoping to reset relations between the Muslim nations and the U.S. It was a call for Muslims and Arab nations to stand against terrorism. In my opinion, it was a striking speech, and certainly not the lecture the liberal media predicted it to be. There were, in my opinion, two takeaways: 1) President Trump will do what it takes to gain peace and acceptance. 2) He spoke, even though in Saudi Arabia, to all Muslim nations, not just to the people in the room. The early outcome of our President's visit: The Saudi government has pledged, in the name of Ivanka Trump, $100 million to women who want to start a business. Donald Trump also closed $350 million worth of deals that mean jobs, jobs, jobs for Americans. In the end, I was especially proud that Trump pointed out that Iran has fueled the fires of sectarian violence, That's a far cry from what Obama did, not against Iran, but for them. On a closing note, speaking of brats, Vice President, Mike Pence gave the commencement address at Notre Dame and graduates staged a demonstration by walking out during his commencement speech. Who in their right mind could condone this kind of behavior? Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area Little Golden Books

Scrawny Lion Saves the Day." I learned to read using these books. Although I would never sell them, I'm wondering what they are worth? -- Carol, Loveland, Colorado A: I found your books referenced in "Collecting Little Golden Books: A Collector's Identification and Price Guide," by Steve Santi and published by Krause Books. According

Osborn Funeral Home

to Santi, your books were all published in 1989 and are worth about $5 each. *** Q: At an estate sale in Atlanta, I purchased an unusual teapot crafted in a Della Robbia design and issued by Roseville Pottery. I paid $100 for the teapot, which appears to be in excellent condition. I bought it because of its design and wonder if you can tell me more about the piece. -Betty, Chattanooga, Tennessee A: You purchased a real bargain. Frederick H. Rhead designed this line in 1905 as part of the Rozane Wares, and named it for a 15th-century Florentine family famous for their enameled terra cotta, or faience. The Della Robbia group is the most complex and diverse collection of the Roseville pieces, as well as the rarest. Della Robbia was a trendsetter during the Arts and Crafts movement. Denice Rago, author of "Warman's Ros e ville Pottery" (Krause Books), believes your teapot would sell in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. It should feature a stylized tulip-and-hearts design in a two-tone green glaze. *** Q: I have a glass flask and wonder if it is valuable. It has "Straubhuller's Elixer -- Tree of Life since 1888" embossed on one side and "Made in Taiwan" on its bottom. -- Jess, Port Charlotte, Florida A: Throughout the 1970s and '80s, reproductions of older flasks and bottles were made in Asia, and that is what you have. This doesn't mean that it has no value, only that it is a copy of an original. My suggestion is to put it in a window and enjoy it. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. Cooking With Lizzie

Summer Food & Fun I love to be in the kitchen twelve months out of the year, but other than the holidays, I especially like the early summer months, for a number of reasons. One is the food is fresh, and another is grilling. So here are a few of my favorites. Up first Sausage, Tomato and Fennel Shells.

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Go Fish Some people would rather stay in their house and play the old card game "Go Fish." But fishermen love to be outdoors facing the challenge of catching the big lunker at the bottom of the lake or the elusive trout in a mountain stream, or maybe try their luck at deep sea fishing. Many of Jesus’ disciples were professional fishermen. But Jesus had a higher calling for his followers. “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed him . . . Jesus called James and John. And immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-22) Luke added some details to Peter’s calling. (Luke 5:1-11) As Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret teaching. A crowd surged around him and seeing two boats, he got in one, which was Peter’s, and asked him to push out from the shore. Jesus

taught the multitudes from the boat. Afterwards he instructed Peter to move out into the deep and let down his nets for a catch. Peter replied, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing, nevertheless at your word I will let down the net.” (Luke 5:5) Peter was astonished when they caught so much fish, the net began to break. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men . . . They forsook all and followed him.” (Luke 5:10-11) Jesus calls believers to a higher purpose — to follow him and become a fisher of men. Put these steps into action. F I R S T L AW O F RETURN. After Peter lent his boat to Jesus, the Lord blessed him with a record catch of fish. No matter what your vocation may be, the first law of return holds true. Put God first in your life and God will bless you. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things

shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33; I Kings 17:12-13) FAITH AND OBEDIENCE. When Peter responded in faith and obedience and let down his net at the word of Jesus, he was rewarded with a miraculous catch. (Luke 5:5-6) God views the eternal souls of men a much greater catch than material blessings. (James 5:19-20; I Corinthians 9:22-23) Step out in faith. FOLLOW JESUS. Jesus extends the call, “Come follow me and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:17-22) To follow Jesus is to be in relationship with him. It is to be a disciple. It is to take his yoke upon you. (Matthew 11:28-29) It is to follow his example and heart to win the eternal souls of men and women to Jesus. (John 12:25-26; 13:34-35) FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit to empower his followers. “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be witnesses unto me.” (Acts 1:8) God will empower you to be a fisher of men. (Luke 11:13) FISH FOR MEN. God is in the people business. Christ followers lift Jesus up as the answer to man’s

deepest need. (John 3:1416) I recently received a call from the sheriff ’s office to assist an inmate who was released from jail, but had no way to get home. I arranged transportation for him and, while we ate a meal together, I asked him a question, “If you were to die tonight, are you sure you would go to heaven?” He replied that he thought he would, as he was a good person. I shared with him that according to God’s Word, we could never be good enough to merit heaven. After I shared some scriptures in the book of Romans, I shared this pertinent verse, “For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8) The man I was sharing the gospel with put his faith in the cross of Christ and received the gift of salvation. All of heaven rejoices. Have you answered the call of Jesus and become a follower of Christ? If you are a believer, are you a fisher of men? God has a higher purpose for you.

by Samantha Weaver • It was American novelist and activist Anne Lamott who made the following sage observation: "Joy is the best makeup." • Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was determined not to get married so long as his mother was alive. He stuck to his decision, too — the same year that his mother

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A stubborn refusal to go ahead on a project mystifies colleagues who expected more flexibility. But once you explain your position, they’ll understand and even applaud you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A relationship seems to be stuck in the same place. Now it’s up to you, dear Bovine, to decide how far you want it to go and how intense you want it to be. Choose well and choose soon. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relationship progresses more slowly than you would prefer. Best advice: Insist on a frank and open discussion. What is learned could change minds and, maybe, hearts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s all right to be grateful to a workplace colleague who has done you a good turn. But gratitude shouldn’t be a lifelong obligation. The time to break this cycle is now. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s going to be especially nice to be the King of the Zodiac at this time. A recent money squeeze eases. Plans start to work out, and new friends enter Your Majesty’s domain. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you make a commitment on any level (personal, professional, legal), get all the facts. There might be hidden problems that could cause trouble later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Personal relationships improve. Professional prospects also brighten.

A job offer could come through by month’s end. An old friend seeks to make contact. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your senses detect that something is not quite right about a matter involving a workplace colleague. Best advice: Follow your keen instincts and don’t get involved. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A prospect offers rewards, but it also demands that you assume a great deal of responsibility. Knowing you, you’re up to the challenge, so go for it, and good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A favor you did a long time ago is repaid, as a trusted colleague steps in to help you with a suddenly expanded workload. A family member has important news. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new job offer could require moving across the country. But before you let your doubts determine your decision, learn more about the potentials involved. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of fair play doesn’t allow you to rush to judgment about a friend who might have betrayed you. Good! Because all the facts are not yet in. Before it was her turn to perform, though, there was a dance act so good that she felt intimidated, so she changed her plan. It was a good idea, evidently -- not only did she win first prize for the night, she went on to take home one of the inaugural Grammy Awards, as well as 12 more over the course of her career.
