The Greatest Moments in Baseball History Seventy years ago, Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier. This week, we remember that juncture and some of the other greatest moments in baseball history — moments that transcend the game and teach us more about life in general than we thought possible at the time. Earning It Going into the 1941 season-ending doubleheader, Ted Williams was statistically hitting .400, and his manager offered to sit him out so he could accomplish the feat. Williams, a hero flying ace in World War II, refused to back into the accomplishment -- either he was a .400 hitter or he wasn't. He went 4-5 and 2-3 in the series, and finished the season at .406. HELP PATIENTS, HONOR LOVED ONES BY DONATING BLOOD WITH THE RED CROSS Before busy summer schedules set in, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to roll up a sleeve to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients in need. Donors of all blood types are needed now to help accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving cancer treatment. Kenneth Reed gives blood in his son’s honor. When Trace was 8 days old, he underwent heart surgery and received blood transfusions. “It’s the least I can do. If it wasn’t for donors, he wouldn’t be here with us today,” said Reed. “I don’t call it donating blood; I call it donating life.” Giving blood is an easy and thoughtful way to honor a loved one who has relied on blood products, to follow in the example of a family member who gives regularly or to simply help others. As a thank you, those who come out to donate May 26-30 will receive a Red Cross-branded visor, while supplies last. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767). Last week it was Comey, Trump, Russia, The Russians, Comey, Trump and on and on. Do the majority care? NO! However, the last I heard, on May 17 the Justice Department announced the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Meueller III as special counsel to investigate any possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government in its efforts to influence the 2016 Presidential election. Please note the key statement was to investigate the Trump campaign, not Donald Trump. Trump's response was, "This is a witch hunt and there is certainly no collusion between myself or my campaign." As for the witch hunt statement, I agree with Donald Trump. I believe it's time for the Washington rocket scientists to get on with the business of what the American people sent them to Washington to do instead of acting like a bunch of brats that didn't get their way. Many of them, e.g. Elijah Cummings, (D-MD) John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and many more, are working to undermine this administration, which I find, in Hillary Clinton's words, deplorable. And speaking of deplorable, what could be more criminal than destroying 33,000 emails, some classified, or storing a government server (also containing classified material) in someone's closet. Enough is enough. But to go back a little further — 2012 to be exact — who remembers thenPresident Obama, while speaking to a representative of Russia, saying, "I'll have

more flexibility after the election"? A microphone was on that someone didn't turn off and this statement was overheard. What the hell did that mean? Why was Obama not investigated for possible collusion when caught in his own words? Flexibility for what? If I sound fed up, I am, as many of us are. Some of the things that are happening to undermine Trump are unAmerican and hurting the U.S. Going back to the Trump investigation, I ask the following questions: 1) What's the crime? 2) What was the point of it? 3) What's the proof? None of the above exist. It's totally different with Hillary Clinton's multitude of crimes, e.g. emails, accepting contributions from foreign governments, and on and on, not to mention Benghazi. Could be an obstruction of justice isn't good reason to appoint special counsel to investigate. Who is responsible for all of the above? In my opinion, the Washington idiots, extreme liberals that instead of conversing would rather shout you down, and the liberal media that need to stop drinking the anti-Trump Kool-Aid. The first 100 days in office 80% of the news coverage was against Trump versus Obama's first 100 days at 41%. In the end, I've heard there are a million signatures on a petition to impeach Trump. My question is, for what? There was no law broken. There are only disappointed people that lost control. Moving on, speaking on a positive note, President Donald Trump gave a speech on this first international trip.

The speech was given in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, hoping to reset relations between the Muslim nations and the U.S. It was a call for Muslims and Arab nations to stand against terrorism. In my opinion, it was a striking speech, and certainly not the lecture the liberal media predicted it to be. There were, in my opinion, two takeaways: 1) President Trump will do what it takes to gain peace and acceptance. 2) He spoke, even though in Saudi Arabia, to all Muslim nations, not just to the people in the room. The early outcome of our President's visit: The Saudi government has pledged, in the name of Ivanka Trump, $100 million to women who want to start a business. Donald Trump also closed $350 million worth of deals that mean jobs, jobs, jobs for Americans. In the end, I was especially proud that Trump pointed out that Iran has fueled the fires of sectarian violence, That's a far cry from what Obama did, not against Iran, but for them. On a closing note, speaking of brats, Vice President, Mike Pence gave the commencement address at Notre Dame and graduates staged a demonstration by walking out during his commencement speech. Who in their right mind could condone this kind of behavior? Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Also, I sometimes run it across the towel bars and the toilet paper holder to remove dust." — C.E. in Georgia • Fill a small spray bottle with rubbing alcohol. Puppy Can't Stand Leash DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My mixed-breed puppy "Max" is very playful — until I put a leash on him. Then it's a battle to get him to walk with me. He will sit down and not move. All I can do is pick him up and carry him, but he's getting bigger. What can I do? — Phil in Alexandria, Virginia DEAR PHIL: Max has formed a negative association with the leash. It's not your fault, but for some reason Max just does not see the leash as a good time. And since dogs are all about having a good time, he's resisting. The thing to do here is build a positive association with the leash. Here's one method, courtesy of the

AKC: Teach him a "cue" — Fill your pocket with small treats (you can even cut them smaller to reduce calories) and spend one or two indoor training sessions teaching Max a special cue, like "yes," clicking your tongue, or using a clicker. Each time you cue, toss him a treat. Do this until he responds enthusiastically to the cue even without a treat. Reintroduce his leash — Have him wear the collar and leash in supervised sessions around the house; don't hold the leash, just let him wear it. Be supportive during the process. Reinforce the "come" command — While he's on the leash, go across the room and call him. Give a treat (with the cue) when he obeys. Rinse and repeat. Hold the leash — Now, just hold the leash while you give basic commands. Follow with the cue and treat. Begin and end with lots of praise. Take it outside — Start with Max on the leash, training basic commands along with the cue and treat.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Go Fish Some people would rather stay in their house and play the old card game "Go Fish." But fishermen love to be outdoors facing the challenge of catching the big lunker at the bottom of the lake or the elusive trout in a mountain stream, or maybe try their luck at deep sea fishing. Many of Jesus’ disciples were professional fishermen. But Jesus had a higher calling for his followers. “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed him . . . Jesus called James and John. And immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-22) Luke added some details to Peter’s calling. (Luke 5:1-11) As Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret teaching. A crowd surged around him and seeing two boats, he got in one, which was Peter’s, and asked him to push out from the shore. Jesus taught the multitudes from the boat. Afterwards he instructed Peter to move out into the deep and let down his nets for a catch. Peter replied, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing, nevertheless at your word I will let down the net.” (Luke 5:5) Peter was astonished when they caught so much fish, the net began to break. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men . . . They forsook all and followed him.” (Luke 5:10-11) Jesus calls believers to a higher purpose — to follow him and become a fisher of men. Put these steps into action. F I R S T L AW O F RETURN. After Peter lent his boat to Jesus, the Lord blessed him with a record

catch of fish. No matter what your vocation may be, the first law of return holds true. Put God first in your life and God will bless you. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33; I Kings 17:12-13) FAITH AND OBEDIENCE. When Peter responded in faith and obedience and let down his net at the word of Jesus, he was rewarded with a miraculous catch. (Luke 5:5-6) God views the eternal souls of men a much greater catch than material blessings. (James 5:19-20; I Corinthians 9:22-23) Step out in faith. FOLLOW JESUS. Jesus extends the call, “Come follow me and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:17-22) To follow Jesus is to be in relationship with him. It is to be a disciple. It is to take his yoke up on you. (Matthew 11:28-29) It is to follow his example and heart to win the eternal souls of men and women to Jesus. (John 12:25-26; 13:34-35) FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit to empower his followers. “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be witnesses unto me.” (Acts 1:8) Go d will empower you to be a fisher of men. (Luke 11:13) FISH FOR MEN. God is in the people business. Christ followers lift Jesus up as the answer to man’s deepest need. (John 3:1416) I recently received a call from the sheriff ’s office to assist an inmate who was released from jail, but had no way to get home. I arranged transportation for him and, while we ate a meal together, I asked him a question, “If you were to die tonight, are you sure you would go to heaven?” He replied that he thought he would, as he was a good person. I shared with him that according to God’s

Word, we could never be good enough to merit heaven. After I shared some scriptures in the book of Romans, I shared this pertinent verse, “For by grace you have been saved

through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8) The man I was sharing the gospel with put his faith in the cross of

Christ and received the gift of salvation. All of heaven rejoices. Have you answered the call of Jesus and become a follower of Christ? If you are a believer, are you a

fisher of men? God has a higher purpose for you. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

A GATSBY THEMED NIGHT TO REMEMBER BY CATHY STUEHMEIER What a night! Last Saturday evening I attended the Centralia Cultural Society and Light & Lens Camera Club as they presented "A Gatsby Themed Night To Remember." And an evening to remember it was, with fabulous entertainment by the UCD Performers of St. Louis and ending with dancing to the music of Alan and Ian Presswood, complete with appetizers and soft drinks. Everything from the waltz to the foxtrot was performed, all up to the Cultural Society's perfect standards. It truly was a night to remember Gatsby style. Plan now to attend these upcoming events: Kool Aid and Canvas. Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be provided. There will be two paintings to offer for instruction. You may view selections on their facebook page or at Centraliaarts.org. Class size is limited, so please call early to pre-register. Each child must be pre-registered and pre-paid ($20 each) for class. For more information call 523-2951.

HONORING OUR HEROES ON MEMORIAL DAY

BUNDY’S TIRE

BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER

1000 N. Poplar • Centralia • 618-533-9208

IN MT. VERNON, IL

Question: I get Social Security because of a disability. How often will my case be reviewed to determine if I’m still eligible? Answer: How often we review your medical condition depends on how severe it is and the likelihood it will improve. Your award notice tells you when you can expect your first review using the following terminology: • Medical improvement expected — If your condition is expected to improve within a specific time, your first review will be six to 18 months after you started getting disability benefits. • Medical improvement possible — If improvement in your medical condition is possible, your case will be reviewed about every three years. • Medical improvement not expected—If your medical condition is unlikely to improve, your case will be reviewed about once every five to seven years. For more information, visit www.socialsecurity. gov. Question: Will my Social Security disability benefit increase if my condition gets worse or I develop additional health problems? Answer: No. We do not base your Social Security benefit amount on the severity of your disability. The amount

you are paid is based on your average lifetime earnings before your disability began. If you go back to work after getting disability benefits, you may be able to get a higher benefit based on those earnings. In addition, we have incentives that allow you to work temporarily without losing your disability benefits. For more information about disability benefits, read our publications Disability Benefits and Working While Disabled — How We Can Help. Both are available online at www.social security.gov/pubs. Question: I know you need to have limited resources to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). But what is considered a resource? Answer: Resources are things you own that you can use for support. They include cash, real estate, personal belongings, bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. To be eligible for SSI a person must have no more than $2,000 in countable resources. A married couple must have no more than $3,000 in countable resources. If you own resources over the SSI limit, you may be able to get SSI benefits while trying to sell the resources. Not all of your resources count toward the SSI resource limit. For example: • The home you live in and the land it's on do not count. • Your personal effects and household goods do not count. • Life insurance policies may not count, depending on their value. • Your car usually does not count. • Burial plots for you and members of your immediate family do not count. • Up to $1,500 in burial funds for you and up to $1,500 in burial funds for your spouse may not count. • If you are blind or have a disability, some items may not count if you plan to use them to work or earn extra income. You may also wish to read our material on "resources" in the booklet, Understanding SSI at www. socialsecurity.gov/ssi/textunderstanding-ssi.htm.

On Memorial Day, we honor the soldiers and service members who have given their lives for our nation. Social Security respects the heroism and courage of our military service members, and we remember those who have given their lives in defense of freedom. Part of how we honor service members is the way we provide Social Security benefits. The unexpected loss of a family member is a difficult experience for anyone. Social Security helps by providing benefits to protect service members’ dependents. Widows, widowers, and their dependent children may be eligible for Social Security survivors benefits. You can learn more about Social Security survivors benefits at www. socialsecurity.gov/survivors. It’s also important to recognize those service members who are still with us, especially those who have been wounded. Just as they served us, we have the obligation to serve them. Social Security has benefits to assist veterans when an injury prevents them from returning to active duty. Wounde d mi lit ar y service members can also receive expedited processing of their Social Security disability claims. For example, Social Security will provide expedited processing of disability claims filed by veterans who have a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Comp e ns at i on r at i ng of 100 percent Permanent & Total (P&T). Depending on the situation, some family members of military personnel, including dependent children and, in some cases, spouses, may be eligible to receive benefits. You can get answers to commonly asked questions and find useful information about the application process at www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors. Service members can also receive Social Security in addition to military retirement benefits. The good news is that your military retirement benefit does not reduce your Social Security retirement benefit. Learn more about Social Security retirement benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/

Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country. The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Me m or i a l D ay. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke University note that during the Civil War, organized women's groups in the south had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Memorial Day as we know it today can likely be traced to Charleston, S.C., where teachers, missionaries and some members of the press gathered on May 1, 1865 to honor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers

were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity. Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves. When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course. While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan pre-

ferred the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. In 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890, every northern state officially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday. But southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May.

REMEMBER SACRIFICE ON MEMORIAL DAY More than 100 years ago in 1863, America was in the midst of the most painful time in our history — the Civil War. On the site of the bloody battle, on the outskirts of Columbus, Mississippi, a group of women walked among the fresh graves. They carried wildflowers to lay on the graves of their Confederate soldiers who were buried there. As they moved from one grave to another, they noticed another group of

graves off to one side. They were clearly the graves of Union soldiers who had died on the same field of battle. With little discussion, they began to lay their flowers on those graves as well. The healing of a nation began at that point. The compassion of these Southern ladies for those who died fighting against their husbands, fathers and sons gave a clear message that, in death, all are equal. This small gesture was passed by

word of mouth. Union and Confederate soldiers alike were touched by this simple act of honor. A Union veterans organization, called the Grand Army of the Republic, decided to designate a special day to honor the fallen from both sides. The following order was issued: “The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of com-

rades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race of chains and their deaths a tattoo (drumbeat) of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance.” New York was the first state to set aside this day for specific remembrance of

HOW TO HONOR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN Men and women serving in the military make considerable sacrifices in defense of the United States and its citizens. Such sacrifices can easily be taken for granted by those with no friends or family members serving in the military, but it's important for all Americans to recognize the efforts of both active and veteran servicemen and women. Honoring active military members and veterans does not have to be an elaborate u nd e r t a k i ng . S e r v i c e members and their families often cherish even the simplest of gestures, and the following are a handful of

17

ways grateful men and women can show their appreciation to active and retired members of the military. • Help a neighbor who's on active duty. Active duty service members can be away from their families for long periods of time, and their absence can make things difficult for their families. Spouses of deployed service members are typically left to manage a household on their own for months at a time. Neighbors can show their appreciation by helping with some chores around the house. Offer to mow a neighbor's lawn or

drive a neighbor's kids to school. Such gestures might seem small, but they can go a long way toward alleviating some of the stress that spouses of deployed service members deal with on a daily basis. • Support the Wounded Warrior Project. Many service members sustain physical injuries while deployed. The Wounded Warrior Project works to raise awareness and enlist the public's help to address the needs of injured service members. Men and women who want to show their appreciation to injured service members can work with the

Wounded Warrior Project by volunteering at projectsponsored events or hosting fundraising events such as golf tournaments or community picnics. More information about working with the Wounded Warrior Project is available at www.woundedwarriorproject.org. • Write a letter of appreciation. One of the simplest ways to show your support for service members is to

those fallen in battle. In 1873, they passed a law designating May 30 as Decoration Day. In 1882, the holiday was adopted across the United States and renamed “Memorial Day.” In 1973, Memorial Day was officially established as the last Monday in May. On Memorial Day, the sky will likely be clear and most of us will have the day off to enjoy a long weekend. All of us, even the veterans, will have a tendency to enjoy the day without a thought to those who should be remembered.

These are the ones who never married their sweetheart, never saw their children play, never went back to school or pursued their dream career. For them and the families they left behind, we must pause during our picnics and gatherings. We must pause, if only for a moment, to remember their sacrifices. If they could speak they would likely say, “Make the most of your freedom and privileges. We purchased them with our lives.” I guess we owe them at least that much. I am sure they would ask for no more.

write them a letter expressing that appreciation. If a friends, relatives or neighbors are active service members or veterans, sit down and write a letter

telling them how much you appreciate their sacrifice in service of their country, and encourage youngsters to do Continued on page 18

the same. If you don't know any members of the military, you can work with A Million Thanks (www.amillionthanks.org), a year-round campaign that encourages Americans to write letters or emails or send cards or prayers to U.S. military personnel, past and present to thank them for their sacrifices, dedication and service. • Exercise your right to vote. One of the best ways to honor servicemen and women is to avoid taking the rights they so bravely defend

for granted. Members of the military routinely put their lives on the line so Americans can enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe cannot. Voting is one such freedom, so Americans should make it a point to vote every Election Day and teach their kids about the responsibility each American has to vote and take an interest in their government. Speak with active and veteran members of the military about their thoughts on proposed legislation and their opinions on how to improve that legislation, taking those opinions into consideration before casting your vote.

They answered the

call of duty

Keep the men and women who have served our country in your hearts. Remember how much they have given of themselves to make America what it is today: One Nation Under God Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice For ALL.

On Veterans Day, we pause to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our Armed Forces. We honor the memory of those who lost their lives protecting our nation’s freedom, and we salute all those who have served in our military past and present.

DON’T FORGET:

If You Have A Flag On A Pole, It Is To Be Lowered To Half Staff At Sunrise On Memorial Day And Raised To Full Staff At Noon

Their selfless dedication reminds us that freedom is not free, and we will never forget their courage and extraordinary contribution to our country.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A stubborn refusal to go ahead on a project mystifies colleagues who expected more flexibility. But once you explain your position, they’ll understand and even applaud you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A relationship seems to be stuck in the same place. Now it’s up to you, dear Bovine, to decide how far you want it to go and how intense you want it to be. Choose well and choose soon. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relationship progresses more slowly than you would prefer. Best advice: Insist on a frank and open discussion. What is learned could change minds and, maybe, hearts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s all right to be grateful to a workplace colleague who has done you a good turn. But gratitude shouldn’t be a lifelong obligation. The time to break this cycle is now. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s going to be especially nice to be the King of the Zodiac at this time. A recent money squeeze eases. Plans start to work out, and new friends enter Your Majesty’s domain. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you make a commitment on any level (personal, professional, legal), get all the facts. There might be hidden problems that could cause trouble later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Personal relationships improve. Professional prospects also brighten.

Best advice: Follow your keen instincts and don’t get involved. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A prospect offers rewards, but it also demands that you assume a great deal of responsibility. Knowing you, you’re up to the challenge, so go for it, and good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A favor you did a long time ago is repaid, as a trusted colleague steps in to help you with a suddenly expanded workload. A family member has important news. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of fair play doesn’t allow you to rush to judgment about a friend who might have betrayed you. Good! Because all the facts are not yet in.
