The Baddest Man On the Planet "That's my successor." And with those three words from Mike Tyson — and three knockdowns in his title fight — Anthony Joshua became the new face of boxing. Do we finally have the next great heavyweight champion of the world in our midst? While the disrespect to the Klitschkos — guys like Michael Moorer, Riddick Bowe, Lenox Lewis and Evander Holyfield — is apparent, it's easy enough to understand what Tyson is saying here. There are boxers who wear belts, and then there are men whom

people just universally identify as the champ. In fact, until around 1960, that's how champions were crowned ... popular choice. One guy was considered the baddest man on the planet, another guy came up and beat him, won a few more times until some guy beat him. It worked out well and formed a lineage that any fight fan can rattle off in a moment's notice: Tyson, Holmes, Ali, Liston, Patterson, Marciano, Louis, Dempsey, Johnson ... sprinkle in a few other names here and there, but you get the point. Nobody ever says that Michael Spinks or Frank Bruno was the champ.

By Chris Richcreek

1. In 2015, Ryan Braun became the Milwaukee Brewers' all-time leader in home runs. Who had held the top spot? 2. Three major-league players had careers of at least 3,000 hits and 600 home runs. Name them. 3. Who was the first defensive player to be named MVP of the Super Bowl?

What makes a heavyweight champion? A champ has to be equal parts skill and spectacle. He has to dazzle you when you're watching him in the ring, but also make half the world want to climb in the ring to try and knock him out of it while making the other half cower in abject fear at the thought. They should be regal ... a champ doesn't have to be flashy, but he should be able to represent on the red carpet, draw crowds and know how to handle them. Be an ambassador to the sport. And, yeah, be the baddest man on the planet. Joshua has a lot going for him in that department. He's British-Nigerian and took up boxing when he was 18, amassing a 40-3 win record and garnering all of the appropriate attention that a 6-foot-6 super-heavyweight bodybuilding sprinter would. He's an Olympic gold medal winner. Now he's the champ, sporting a 19-0 record with 19 knockouts and a multi-fight deal 4. How many times has Villanova's men's basketball team reached the Final Four, and how many times have the Wildcats won the title? 5. Who was the first Philadelphia Flyers player to tally 50 or more goals in a season? 6. Name the first athlete born in the year 2000 or later to win a gold medal in an Olympic sport. 7. When was the last time before the 2016 Ryder Cup that the U.S. men's golf team won the event by at least six points?

Wednesday, June 7, 2017 with Showtime. It's Joshua's time to reign. In interviews, Tyson has been more matter-of-fact than effusive. "Whenever there's a new heavyweight champion and he's explosive like [Joshua] and wins the title like that it changes the whole game," Tyson told ESPN. He seemed almost grateful to finally dismiss talk of the rumored MayweatherMacGregor fight, a potential contest he called "garbage." "All the little guys who were making a lot of money are not going to make their money any more," Tyson said. "It's all going to be about Joshua and the heavyweights now. That one fight [with Klitschko] changed boxing." Joshua appears ready to take it all in stride — because he's willing to fight everyone, and that's what champions do. LOCAL WOMEN RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS STATE AWARDS

RED CROSS CALLS FOR NEW DONORS TO PREVENT A SUMMER BLOOD SHORTAGE

Two local women were honored at the recent state convention of the Illinois Federation of Business Wo m e n ' s C l u b s i n Champaign Illinois with their most prestigious award — Outstanding Working Women of Illinois. Pastor Anita Munden and Judge Jo Beth Weber were presented the awards at the federation's banquet to honor them on Saturday May 6, 2017. Both have had distinguished careers in their respective working life as well as furthering their education and raising families. Both have succeeded in careers that are male dominated. Pastor Munden started her career in teaching math and physics. She then went on to get her Master's Degree in accounting embraced the new computer age and rose through the ranks to become the Benefits Supervisor of a large company. In this job she traveled throughout the country. Finally, she followed her heart and calling, went to seminary and became a pastor in the Methodist Church. Since then she has ser ved throughout central and southern Illinois. She is

The American Red Cross urges those who have never given blood before – as well as those who haven’t given recently – to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help sustain a sufficient community blood supply this summer. While the need for blood is constant during the summer months, the Red Cross experiences a drastic decline in new donors. Nationwide, about 32 percent fewer new blood donors, and 41% fewer in Illinois & 39% fewer in Missouri, came out to give last summer than during the rest of the year. Additionally, many schools where blood drives are held – and where new donors give – are not in session, and current donors often delay giving due to summer vacation plans. While about 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood, less than 10 percent of those eligible actually do. The blood donation process takes about an hour with the actual donation only taking about 10 minutes. Whether new to donating blood or a lifelong donor, the Red Cross offers helpful tips for an enjoyable donation experience: 1. As much as possible, eat iron-rich foods leading up to your donation. 2. Hydrate — drink an extra 16 oz. of liquid before and after the donation. 3. Have a healthy meal before the donation. 4. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the

currently the pastor of First Methodist Church in Centralia and the Methodist Church in Irvington, Illinois. Judge Jo Beth Weber is well known in Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County for her work with providing opportunities for offenders through the creation and support of both the Youth Court and the Drug Court. Both give offenders the opportunity to change their lives through strict compliance and cooperation. Judge Weber is a lifelong Jefferson county resident. She received her undergraduate and legal degrees from universities in Illinois and has spent her legal career in Illinois mostly in Jefferson County. She was the first woman to be

elected to her judicial district and has greatly modernized and improved the system. She is active in Jefferson County organizations and activities. The Illinois Federation of Business Women's Clubs was pleased to honor these two outstanding working women. Both, along with their husbands and the judge's children, attended the banquet to receive their awards and each gave a short speech talking about their careers and what it took to succeed. Judge Weber was the invited sp eaker to the Post Convention Board meeting of the federation and emphasized the need for perseverance in the face of negativism to attain success.

By Larry Cox Brownie Camera Q: When my greatgrandmother and her sister went to the St. Louis Fair in 1904, she took along a Brownie Camera Model A made by Kodak. It was a simple box camera, but took remarkable pictures. Does it have any value? — Rob, Chesterfield, Missouri A: Your camera is a folding type in a black leatherette case with maroon bellows. It generally sells for about $85 and is referenced in the "Cameras and Photographica Price Guide," edited by Kyle Husfloen. *** Q: I have a jar that is marked "Humphrey Glass Works," but I can't find anything about the company in my reference books. The jar has been in my family since the early 1900s. Can you tell me anything about the company? — Dawn, Austin, Texas A: Humphrey Glass Works was established in

about 1890 by John M.M. Humphrey in Trenton, Nova Scotia. According to "Glass A to Z" by David J. Shotwell, the company made bottles, jars and even chimneys and globes for lanterns. In 1900, the glassworks was destroyed by fire, but within a year it was rebuilt near the original site and began expanding operations to include sodawater bottles, medicine bottles and flasks. In 1915, the plant relocated to Moncton, New Brunswick, and ceased production in about 1920. *** Q: I have the first LP recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, the folksingers. It was issued in 1962, according to the information on the cover. What is it worth? — Rita, Wisconsin A: Faster than you can say "Puff, the Magic Dragon," I found your LP listed in the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 19501975 by Tim Neely, pub-

lished by Krause and available online. Neely claims the LP is worth $20 if it is the mono issue, and $25 if stereo. It is fairly common and frequently pops up at garage sales throughout the country. *** Q: I have a lamp that first appeared to be glass-leaded. On closer examination, I decided the pieces of the shade might be plastic. I am enclosing a picture for your opinion. — Brenda, Marion, Indiana A: Your shade is made of capiz shell, a close cousin of the oyster. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Neighbors Battle Over Dog's Backyard Habits DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I've been letting my dog out in the backyard for years to do his business. Lately, my new next-door neighbor has been complaining to me about the smell coming from my backyard. I haven't noticed anything; I think he just doesn't like my dog. Now he's threatening to call the city. What can I do to stop this harassment? — Annoyed in Altoona, Pennsylvania DEAR ANNOYED: I'm not in a position to judge this situation. However, I can tell you that in warm

7

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area weather, the smell of fresh dog poop carries quite a long way. If your neighbor is trying to enjoy a nice spring morning in his backyard at the same time your dog does his business, the two are bound to cross aromatic paths. Try to listen to your neighbor and get more details on when he notices the smell. Is the odor constant, or just for a few minutes? Would it be possible to compromise by letting your dog out an hour earlier in the morning or later at night? On another note, are you picking up after your dog? If not, waste can quickly litter your backyard to the point that you can't enjoy it either, for fear of stepping in poo. It's also a terrible fertilizer: Dog poop and urine have high levels of nitrogen, which yellows and eventually kills grass. If your back yard has clumpy tufts of grass or no grass at all, your dog's poop may be the reason.

As far as calling the city, whether it takes action depends on whether you're violating any ordinances.

STORE HOURS MON. - THURS. 9 A.M. TO 5:30 P.M. FRIDAY 9 A.M. - 7 P.M. SATURDAYS 9 A.M. - 5 P.M.

Starting this week — sorry to say — with bad news: The State of Illinois General Assembly ended the spring session with no state budget. On May 31 Sen. Kyle McCarter said at the end of the 2017 spring session, “I have some awfully bad news for the people of this state. The fight for power and the unconcern for the citizens continues. There is no desire to deliver a balanced budget that respects the taxpayers. Instead, the political games continue. All they proposed were new programs and punishing tax increases.” In my opinion, starting with Gov. Bruce Rauner, I believe he is trying to solve the State’s problems in four years, and Speaker of the House Michael Madigan isn’t willing to give an inch. Prior to the vote the House Democrats shoved unacceptable wants into the budget and the Republicans couldn’t and wouldn’t create more problems for this already close-to-bankrupt state! More on this in next week’s column from Rep. John Cavaletto. Next up, Kathy Griffin, who is the perfect embodiment of what the modern left believes and is, sad but true. As far as the head shot (let’s call it that) which I found disgusting and deplorable as so many of us did, let me assure everyone that had it been the head of Barack Obama I would have found it every bit as

deplorable and disgusting. Now this “sicko” is crying crocodile tears because Donald Trump, his wife and his grown children ruined her career. Guess what, she ruined her own career. In Ms. Griffin’s own words, she said, “He broke me,” referring to Trump. If this isn’t a flaming leftist statement I don’t know what is! It’s never their fault! And yes, she apologized, rolling her eyes! And now she’s hired an attorney, Lisa Bloom, to sue. Really! For What! Even Trump’s harshest critics (like Chelsea Clinton) joined Trump himself on Twitter in decrying the sight. Yet according to Ms. Griffin she’s the victim. Again, this is a prime example of Hollywood living in a bubble. However, this isn’t just going on in Hollywood; look at New York as well as Chicago. On to the Paris Accord. In my opinion, the Paris Climate Accord was another example of Washington entering into an ag re e me nt t h at put America at a disadvantage and was a benefit to other countries. In Trump’s own words, leaving the American worker and taxpayers to absorb the cost in terms of lost jobs and lower wages. In other words, it leaves the U.S holding the economic and financial burden, not to mention the cost to us was a vast fortune.

The bottom line is the Paris Accord is very unfair to us. Just one of the highlights of the Paris Accord was that the current agreement blocks the development of clean coal in America, but China was allowed to build hundreds of additional coal plants, and India will be allowed to double its coal production by 2020. Does this make sense? India can double coal production yet we are supposed to get rid of ours. In the long run, the accord didn’t eliminate coal jobs; it just transferred those jobs to foreign countries. Enough is enough. Hate Trump or love Trump, the Paris Accord is full of what I pointed out above, and it took a responsible leader to stand up and say so! Plus NO responsible leader could have signed an agreement like the Paris Accord that — simply put — left America at a tremendous disadvantage. Trump said, “I was elected to represent Pittsburgh, not Paris.” So while many liberals are jumping up and down, Trump is following through on his campaign promises to America. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. In order for your letter to be considered for publication, you must provide your signature and an address and phone number where you can be reached. 1/3 cup finely chopped onion 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 T. chili sauce or tomato ketchup 2 tsp. prepared white horseradish 1¼ tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 375°. Combine all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Using your clean hands, work the mixture until it is well combined and all the ingredients are evenly distributed. Pack into a 9x5-inch loaf pan, smoothing the top to an even level. Bake in the preheated oven until the meat loaf is nicely browned on top and the meat juices no longer run pink in the center when pierced with the point of a sharp knife, about 55 to 60 minutes. Remove any grease that has accumulated in the bottom of the pan with a bulb baster or by pouring it off. Cut into 3/4-inch slices and serve. Yield: 6 servings.

Scalloped Potatoes Our Way

1 large onion, sliced thin (about 1 cup) 1½ T. butter 1 large clove garlic, minced 1½ lbs. all-purpose potatoes, peeled and sliced thin

1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 1½ cups heavy cream 1 slice firm white bread

Preheat the oven to 400°. In a large skillet, saute the onions in 1 T. of the butter over medium-low heat until the onion begins to soften, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and saute about 1 minute more. Place the onion mixture in a shallow 2-quart baking dish or gratin dish. Add the potatoes, add salt and pepper, and toss gently until well combined. Use a spatula or large spoon to spread the potatoes in an even layer in the baking dish. Pour the cream over the potato mixture. Use a food processor to make crumbs from the bread and sprinkle evenly over the potato mixture. Dot with the remaining 1/2 T. of butter. Place in the center of the oven and bake 10 minutes, then lower the heat to 350°. Continue to bake until the potatoes are tender, the crumbs are richly browned, and the mixture is bubbly, about 35 to 40 minutes. Serve directly from the baking dish. Yield: 6 servings.

2/3 cup granulated sugar 1 T. cocoa 1½ T. cornstarch 1 tsp. instant coffee, preferably instant espresso Pinch of salt 3 cups milk 2 eggs COFFEE CREAM: 3/4 cup chilled heavy cream 2 tsp. confectioners' sugar

2 egg yolks 1 cup (6 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips or 6 (1 oz.) semisweet chocolate, squares, chopped 1 T. butter 1 T. coffee-flavored liqueur (optional) 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. instant coffee, preferably instant espresso

To make the pudding, combine the sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, instant coffee, and salt in a heavy saucepan. Slowly stir in the milk and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs and the egg yolks . Whisk in a small amount of the hot milk mixture to temper the eggs, then whisk the egg-milk mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is the consistency of a medium-thick cream sauce and heavily coats a spoon, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and add the chocolate and the butter. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Stir in the liqueur and the vanilla. Pour the pudding into six individual dessert dishes or stemmed glasses or 1½-quart bowl and refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour. To make the coffee cream, combine the chilled cream and the instant coffee and stir until the coffee dissolves. Whip the cream, adding the confectioners' sugar as the cream thickens. Serve the mocha pudding topped with a large dollop of the coffee cream. Yield: 6 servings. NOTE: The pudding may be made ahead and covered when cold. It will keep, refrigerated, for up to 2 days. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. HOW AGING WOMEN CAN FIGHT FIBROMYALGIA PAIN As the body ages, aches and pains might become more difficult for men and women to handle. While not all pain is indicative of a disorder or condition, aging women who experience pain may be suffering from fibromyalgia. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases notes that fibromyalgia is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain. While anyone can get fibromyal-

gia, the NIAMS that between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed are women and that sufferers are most often diagnosed in middle age. Doctors may prescribe medication to help women fight pain resulting from fibromyalgia, and there are some additional ways to combat that pain as well. • Get enough sleep. The NIAMS says the getting enough sleep can help ease the pain and fatigue associated with

fibromyalgia. To ensure a better night’s sleep, women can adopt sleep schedules so they go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, including on weekends and during vacations. Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, as both substances can make it more difficult to sleep soundly. In a d d it i on , avoi d reading or working while in bed, as such activities can stimulate the body,

making it harder to fall asleep as a result. • Exercise regularly. Exercising while in pain may seem counterintuitive, but the NIAMS notes that numerous studies have indicated that regular exercise is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia. Some women suffering from fibromyalgia have reported feeling better when they began to avoid certain foods, though the NIAMS points out that there is no specific diet connected to reducing fibromyalgia-related pain. Asthma, a chronic lung disease that results in inflamed and narrowed air passages, affects millions of people around the world. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute notes that more than 25 million people in the United States have asthma. Asthma is also prevalent in Canada, where the Asthma Society of Canada says more than three million people currently have asthma. When airways narrow and swell, they can produce extra mucus. Breathing becomes quite difficult when asthma is present. The Mayo Clinic says that asthma is just a minor nuisance for some people, while others may experience life-threatening attacks. Recognizing potential triggers and avoiding them can help control symptoms.

The changing of seasons can be a tricky time for asthma sufferers because of the increase in air irritants. Pollen and mold spores are known asthma triggers. Spring cleaning around the house also may trigger an attack if dust, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste are stirred up. People who are allergic to certain substances also may discover these same allergens can trigger asthma attacks. Irritants in the environment also can bring on such attacks. The Asthma & Allerg y Foundation of America indicates that, while people may not be allergic to certain irritants, irritants can bother inflamed and sensitive airways. Cigarette smoke, wood fires, charcoal grills, smog, strong fumes, and chemicals also may trigger asthma attacks. People with asthma also must take care when exercising or when they develop respirator y illnesses. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction can appear after several minutes of sustained exercise. The AAFA also notes that colds, flu and sinus infections are among the most common asthma triggers in children.

Although many asthma triggers are known, researchers continue to explore what causes asthma. The NHLBI says that people may be more likely to develop asthma if: • They have atopy, an inherited tendency to develop allergies. • Their parents have asthma . • They were exposed to certain respiratory infections during their childhood. • They had contact with allergens while their immune systems were developing. A theory known as the “hygiene hypothesis” suggests another potential cause for asthma. Researchers say that growing concerns with hygiene and sanitation have removed many of the types of environmental exposures that once helped children develop strong immune systems. As a result, an increased risk for atopy and asthma has surfaced. Asthma sufferers can try to avoid common triggers and may find that medication and other lifestyle changes can help control their symptoms.

SIGNS OF STRESS THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED The American Institute of Stress notes that various disorders, both emotional and physical, have been linked to stress. Such disorders include depression, stroke, hypertension, and anxiety, among others. In its 2015 Stress in America™ survey, the American Psychological Association found that money, stress and family responsibilities are the three most common stressors. While the symptoms of stress are uncomfortable and potentially very dangerous, the APA notes that such indicators also serve as a warning from the body that it needs maintenance and extra care. The following are some of the ways the body might be telling adults to step back and make an effort to relieve stress.

• Headaches, muscle tension, neck or back pain: Some headaches or aches and pains might be mere nuisances or indicative of issues unrelated to stress. But when such symptoms are accompanied by stress, this could be the body’s way of alerting men and women that the stress is approaching unhealthy levels. The AIS notes that when a person is under stress, his or her muscles tense up. The contraction of these muscles for extended periods of time can trigger tension headaches and migraines, among other things. • Chest pains and/or rapid heartbeat: Chest pains and rapid heartbeat may indicate various problems, including stress. This happens when the body is

stressed because stress causes the nervous system to signal the adrenal glands to release hormones that make the heart beat faster

and increase blood pressure. • Difficulty falling or staying asleep: Men and women who are feeling

stressed out and also experiencing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep should consult their physicians about ways to alleviate that stress. When strategies to alleviate stress are successful, adults should be able to return to normal, healthy sleeping patterns. • Increased frequency of colds: Stress can attack the body’s immune system, making it increasingly vulnerable to colds. The AIS also notes that a weakened immune system also makes the body more susceptible to additional viral disorders, including herpes, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. • Loss of appetite or overeating: Stress can affect the gastrointestinal system in various ways, including

3 HEART HEALTH TIPS FOR WOMEN Heart disease may be something most commonly associated with men, but it can be deadly for women as well. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is to blame for one in every four female deaths in the United States. Americans’ female neighbors to the north also are not immune from heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for Canadian women. Recognizing the threat that heart disease poses is a great first step for women who want to avoid becoming one of the hundreds of thousands of women who lose their lives to heart disease each year. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers the following advice to women looking to prioritize their heart health. 1. Consume a heartfriendly diet. Thanks to food labels, it’s easier than ever for women to consume heart-healthy diets. When examining labels, look for foods that are low in sodium and sugar. When planning meals, avoid foods that are high in trans fats. In 2015, the FDA ruled that trans fats were not recognized as safe for use in human foods and gave manufacturers three years to remove them from their products. At press time, no such ban exists in Canada,

though information regarding trans fats must be included on Canadian food labels. The Cleveland Clinic advises consumers to check labels for “partially hydrogenated oils,” which are a hidden source of trans fats. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic notes that foods such as cakes, pies, cookies, biscuits, microwavable breakfast sandwiches, and many types of crackers contain trans fats. 2. Take existing conditions seriously. Certain conditions can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. While women may not be able to turn back the clocks and prevent these conditions from developing, they can take them for the serious threat they are and do their best to manage them. High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. Take medications as directed, monitor blood sugar levels if you have diabetes and routinely have your blood pressure and cholesterol tested to ensure any preexisting conditions are not increasing your risk for heart disease. 3. Discuss aspirin intake. The FDA notes that many physicians prescribe aspirin to lower patients’ risk of heart disease, clot-related strokes and other problems related to cardiovascular disease. However, there are

risks associated with longterm aspirin use, and such risks should be discussed with a physician. According to the FDA, bleeding in the stomach, bleeding in the brain, kidney failure, and certain types of stroke are some of the potential side effects of long-term aspirin use. Such side effects may never appear, but the risk that they might makes discussing the pros and cons of aspirin well worth it. Women can learn more about heart disease by visiting www.fda.gov.

influencing appetite. While not all problems with appetite are indicative of a body that is overstressed, stress can prompt some people to eat much more than they normally do, while others may eat considerably less than they normally would. • Diarrhea or constipation: Another indicator that stress is compromising the gastrointestinal system is diarrhea or constipation. Again, while these problems are not exclusive to sufferers of stress, when a person is under stress, this can affect which nutrients the body can successfully absorb and how quickly food is metabolized. This can cause some people to experience diarrhea, while others may be constipated.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

What a Friend I recently stopped in at McDonald’s and saw the wife of a friend of mine. I asked her how her husband was doing. I was shocked to hear that he had a foot amputated and was in a rehabilitation facility. I was somewhat embarrassed because, even though I consider him a friend, I was not aware of the ordeal he had been through. We have various levels/circles of friends. It’s not always possible to have close fellowship with all our friends. Even Jesus, while on earth, had an inner circle among all his friends. I have some exciting news! Because of Jesus’ blood shed on the cross, things have significantly shifted, for now every believer in Christ Jesus can have free, open access into the presence of God and cultivate an intimate friendship with God. (Revelation 3:20) Before Jesus ascended back into heaven, he assured his disciples that he would not leave them as orphans, but would send another helper — the Holy Spirit. (John 14:1517) What a wonderful privilege has been afforded us that, through the blood of Jesus and

fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we can be a friend of God. The Holy Spirit reveals the wonderful “deep things of God” with his friends. (I Corinthians 2:9-10) Consider these aspects of developing a close, personal friendship with Jesus. In John 15 Jesus gives us a treatise on the ultimate friendship. CONNECTION. All friendships must have some connection. The connection may be work, school, community, church, or one of the tightest connections of all — family. But the most intimate and enduring connection of all is a spiritual connection. Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches, he who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, for without me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 -8) The life connection Jesus reveals is fellowship with the Living Word and prayer. PROTECTION, Jesus demonstrated the love of a true friend. “Greater

love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:11-14) Jesus laid down his life for you. Oh, what a friend! He promises to protect his sheep. (John 10:1-16, 27-30) Jesus was betrayed by his friends, but he loved them to the end. The prophet Zechariah gave us a prophetic insight into Christ’s friendship. “’What are these wounds between your arms?’ Then he will answer, ‘Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.’” (Zechariah 13:6) The cross demonstrated Jesus’ great sacrifice. AFFECTION. Friends love one another. Jesus revealed the depth of his love. “As the Father loved me, I also have loved you; abide in my love . . . Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down his love for his friends.” (John 15:9-14) Friends are loyal. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments. (John 15:10) Do you love Jesus? Show and tell him. ELECTION. We typically choose our friends. Jesus calls and chooses you. (John 15:16-17) The theological term is election. “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy,

beloved, put on tender mercy.” (Colossians 3:12; Titus 1:1; Romans 11:15) In the gospel of Luke, we see a powerful example of election in the story of Zacchaeus, a rich tax collector, who wanted to see Jesus as he passed by. When Jesus saw him, he said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” (Luke 19:5) Zacchaeus and Jesus had dinner together. Jesus was criticized because he was friends with tax gatherers and sinners. Zacchaeus repented of sin and became a friend of Jesus. Jesus said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this house . . . for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which is lost.” (Luke 19:110) How sweet it is — to know you are chosen. The old hymn summarizes it well: “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
