read of his success on the field as a great Seattle Seahawk and Miami Hurricane; however, the full story lies in his loving, fun, positive and giving heart. In my many years working in the NFL, no one better exemplified what it meant to be a great player on the field, and yet that paled in comparison to what Cortez meant to the people who knew him off the field. People of all races, religions and nationalities counted him as a friend — athletes and non-athletes alike. We should all aspire to have as big a heart as his!" Perhaps the greatest thing I ever read about the guy — and we'll surely hear more about his charitable efforts in coming days — came from his first NFL coach, Chuck Knox. He was the guy that gave him number 96 and told him to play defensive tackle ... if that was OK with him. Kennedy's response: "Put me wherever you want and let the big dog hunt." Now that is a legacy. Rest in peace, Cortez. You were a killer tackle.

A Big Dog On and Off the Field I was once told that the day you stop trying to leave a legacy is the day your legacy begins. It has to do with humility and letting your actions speak louder than words. It's unlikely that there ever will be a Mt. Rushmore for defensive tackles. Nor is there a good chance that people someday will think about the guy who forced six fumbles over the course of a decadelong football career. They will, however, remember a guy named Cortez Kennedy when they think about what a football player is supposed to be on and off the field. "Tez" was the kind of player you couldn't ignore. A Hall of Famer who spent all 11 years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks during their raucous ‘90s ... a graduate of "The U." A guy universally revered

REP. CAVALETTO WORKING FOR BETTER FUNDING FOR DOWNSTATE SCHOOLS State Representative John Cavaletto (RSalem), a member of the Cost Benefit Analysis Committee, is not happy with the last minute changes to a new school funding formula bill that bails out Chicago schools and short-changes the students in his district. Passing with the bare minimum number of votes, this bill now goes to the governor for consideration. “I do not like that our students are shortchanged and the Chicago schools would receive a disproportionate amount than our kids deserve downstate,” said Rep. John Cavaletto. “I did not feel comfortable supporting Senate Bill 1 in its current form,” he added. The legislature has debated the issue of school funding reform for a number of years, including this past legislative session. Many believe that we need a

more equitable school funding formula in Illinois that lessens our reliance on local property taxes while providing that the State make education a higher priority. Right now, Illinois only provides 24% of total education spending. The political games that were played during the last two days of the Spring Session did not provide for reasonable and adequate education reform for ALL Illinois students. Legislators have been engaged in bi-partisan talks with the advocates of the funding re for m m o d e l for months. But the advocates pushed their own version of the legislation at the last minute that would send almost $500 million more of our tax dollars to Chicago with nothing in return for our local school districts. We must fix this inequity. In addition, Illinois has not had a full budget in two years. This school

funding reform proposal requires $350 million in new money even though the State cannot afford to pay schools for current year programs. SB1 would allocate the monies at a 70% - 30% ratio with 70% for Chicago that has only 23% of the students. The I l l i n oi s E du c at i on Association (IEA) was not a proponent of this bill which says a lot about an advocacy group that is never silent on legislation that impacts teachers. “I will continue to work with my colleagues to develop a new formula to provide an equitable and adequate education for all two million students in Illinois public schools, not just a select f e w ,” c o n c l u d e d Cavaletto. “We have the ability to accomplish this historic feat soon, but we must all work together to do so without political games that continue to be played in Springfield.”

While participating in cookie activities, girls are members of a team working toward a common goal, with each girl striving to do her best. Customers had the opportunity to not only choose from a variety of cookies for themselves, but they could also purchase cookies to benefit GSSI’s Gift of Caring program. GSSI’s Gift of Caring program, called Operation: Sweet Treats, allowed customers to purchase and donate cookies that will be sent to military members serving overseas as well as local military organizations in southern Illinois.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Ninth Inning Champion For years baseball has been recognized as America's favorite past-time. Someone even coined the term "It's as American as baseball and apple pie." Baseball fans enjoy the seventh inning stretch and in some stadiums the fans stand and sing, "Take me out to the ballgame." It's a fun time and the fans enjoy a time of loyal camaraderie. But then comes the crucial ninth inning. It may be time to bring out the closer, a tried and proven pitcher. Fans are looking for a champion. Perhaps a Casey Stengel, a Babe Ruth, a Mickey Mantle, a Stan Musial, or a Cal Ripken, Jr. will step up to the plate and hit a home run. A champion in the ninth inning could win the game! I believe we are living in the ninth inning. The world needs a champion. There is a tried and proven champion and He has already won the game in the ninth inning — "'It is finished!' He cried from the cross. (John 19:30) The psalmist David leads us in praise to this champion in Psalm 9. You must know this ninth inning champion. "I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praises to your name, O Most High. My enemies turn back; they

stumble and perish before you . . . The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you." (Psalm 9:1-10) David gave us the secret of being a champion, "Those who know your name will trust in you." (Psalm 9:10) Israel was facing a giant by the name of Goliath. They were losing big-time — Israel needed a champion! A young rookie named David stepped up to the plate. David challenged the giant. "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand and I will strike you and take your head from you . . . Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the Lord's." (I Samuel 17:45-51) David used a simple slingshot and a little stone to knock out the giant Goliath. He didn't go against the giant in his own strength but by faith in the name of the Lord! Who is the champion that David prophesied about? Matthew traced his genealogy, "Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham . . . Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a Son and they

shall call his name Immanuel which is translated, "God with us." (Matthew 1:1-23) In the ninth inning facing the cross, Jesus prayed his priestly prayer in John 17. "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life; that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." (John 17:1-3) Jesus confirmed what David said about victory. Knowing God and putting faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross makes one a son of God — a champion. (John 1:12) You have a true champion in Jesus. In the ninth inning Jesus stepped to the plate and not only sacrificed his life on the cross as our substitute, but on the third day he arose victorious over death, hell, and the grave. In his last priestly prayer, our champion prayed for our pardon, protection, power, and provision of the full measure of his joy. (John 17) I believe we are in the last inning. Jesus gave this promise to those who know him, "Behold, I am coming soon! . . . I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city." (Revelation 22:1213) Do you know him, this Champion of Champions?

By Larry Cox Hopalong Cassidy Lunchbox Q: I started going to school in Pittsburgh in 1953, and one of my prized possessions was a Hopalong Cassidy lunchbox with thermos. Hoppy was my hero and I still have the lunchbox. I have been offered $200 for it, but think it might be worth more. I have no plans to sell regardless of the offer. — Roger, Atlanta A: Hopalong Cassidy was the first movie/radio character to be featured on a metal lunchbox. Your lunchbox was probably issued in 1950 by Aladdin Industries of Nashville, Tennessee. Although it is

9

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

valued in the $500 to $700 range, one sold at auction for $1,200. The artwork on both the lunchbox and thermos is the work of designer Robert Burton. William Boyd, aka Hopalong Cassidy, remains an American icon. *** Q: I have a very old coin, a 2-cent piece dated 1864. I understand that it might be quite valuable depending on whether it has a small motto or a large motto. What does this mean? — Dorothy, Oklahoma A: I consulted my U.S. Coin Digest: The Complete Guide to Current Market Values, edited by David C. Harper (Krause Publications, $18.99), and discov-

ered there was a modification of this coin during the year of its issue. The motto "In God We Trust" was changed, resulting in a small motto and a larger motto. The coin with the small motto appears to be much more valuable. I recommend you contact a reputable coin dealer, since value will depend on various factors, including condition and demand. *** Q: I have inherited a Majolica humidor with a bird and fan design. It is about 5 1/2 inches tall and turquoise in color. Is it rare? — Roberta, Tampa, Florida A: During the Victorian era, pipe smokers kept their tobacco in decorative jars

or humidors. Some of the more interesting ones are examples of Majolica, colorful and decorated earthenware that has been around since the ninth century. Herbert Minton, an English potter, crafted a new way to make the pottery and helped revive interest in Majolica during the 1850s. Your humidor is worth about $150 and is referenced in "Majolica: Identification and Price Guide" by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause Books. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. It was another wild week in Washington. The much anticipated Thursday hearing with former FBI Director James Comey came and went, with zero evidence that President Donald Trump had anything to do with Russian involvement in the 2016 Presidential election. There was not a shred of proof on the charge of collusion that Trump tampered or had anything illegal to do with Hillary Clinton losing. Donald Trump was vindicated in this hearing. Will Democrats like Elizabeth Warren, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the rest admit it? The answer is NO. But what these hearings did prove about Former FBI Director James Comey is he's guilty of leaking, which to me is mind boggling. The very person that the President of the United States asked to stop the leaks is a leaker. Now if this doesn't disturb the entire country, I don't know what will. In his own words, other than I can't comment in an open hearing — what a joke — he said, "I took my personal notes and gave them to someone who would give them to a reporter, and this is how the New York Times got the story." This whole thing was a ten-month witch hunt and nothing more. But let me assure you if Hillary Clinton had been elected President she would have fired James Comey on day one. Remember her statements about the 33,000 emails that Clinton herself

admitted were destroyed, some marked classified. What's interesting is the Democrats were ready to hang James Comey at that time, but after Comey's latest stunt over charges that Trump was colluding with Russia, Comey became their champion. But let's step back. Why didn't the Democrats call for an investigation into Bill Clinton's meeting with then U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch on the tarmac where their planes both landed by coincidence while Hillary Clinton was supposed to be under investigation? Clearly this was an improper meeting What were the consequences? Absolutely nothing. So do I believe the b.s. will stop? Unfortunately, I don't. The extreme left will continue to do what they can to undermine Trump and sadly, half of the Republicans in Washington aren't much better and will continue to do the same thing. This might be a very good time for the Libertarians to put up some decent candidates. In closing on this witch hunt, all I can conclude is the left undermined their own Russian narrative and the Democrats will continue to convict this President on a play on words. So what's next? Coming up on Tuesday, new Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee. A footnote: James Comey was under Jeff Ses-

sions. The big question is, should Comey go to jail? The answer is absolutely yes! So on to the State of Illinois, and as promised last week, an explanation from our State Representative John Cavaletto (R) on the budget impasse in Illinois: The bottom line is that Governor Rauner and the Republicans want a truly balanced budget with reforms such as property tax relief, workers’ compensation reform and spending cuts. Speaker Madigan and t he D emo crats have blocked all of the reforms and instead want a tax increase to pay for ever-increasing spending. “The Democrats have the majority so they have control of the ball,” said Rep. Cavaletto a former high school basketball coach. “They keep dribbling the budget issue back and forth but won’t even take a shot by setting a revenue estimate and bringing a budget plan for a vote in the House. The shot clock is running out and our schools, colleges and universities, social service providers, businesses and all our residents need the certainty that only a comprehensive, balanced budget can provide.” Until next week To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 8-year-old cat "Dawn" seems to be urinating a lot. In the past her litter box has been fairly dry and needed to be scooped only once a day. But now the litter just seems soaked. I did switch to a new brand of cat litter that doesn't "clump" because I heard it might cause health problems. I haven't seen Dawn drinking lots of water, but this seems weird. What do you think? — Tracy in Denver DEAR TRACY: Go ahead and take Dawn straight to the veterinarian. While it may just be a pe-

culiarity of a new brand of litter, "soaked" litter doesn't sound normal to me, either. Excess urination is a signal of a physical problem with your cat. Most owners first think of diabetes, but only the vet can make sure, because other conditions exist that also have excess urination as a symptom. Dawn could be drinking from other water sources besides her water dish, which is why you might not have noticed increased thirst. Cats that are getting ill tend to be secretive as well, because it's instinctive for them to hide their condition from predators. Write down anything else that appears different about Dawn, even if it doesn't seem important: changes in behavior and energy, her teeth and gums, in eating or drinking, and as you noticed, her bathroom habits. Once the veterinarian has diagnosed a problem, then you can work together on the best treatment

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, beloved creator of Sherlock Holmes, who made the following sage observation: "I should dearly love that the world should be ever so little better for my presence. Even on this small stage we have our two sides, and something might be done by throwing all one's weight on the scale of breadth, tolerance, charity, temper-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A recent spate of confusion regarding decision-making begins to clear up. But caution is still advised. Continue to check details. An old friend has important news. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re anxious to see your ideas move from concept to development. But trying to force the issue right now could backfire. Wait for movement to resume shortly. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Keep your thoughts focused on the positive as you deal with an unexpected turn of events in a personal or professional relationship. This could be the start of a welcome change. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Health matters take on added importance at this time. Deal with them before they interfere with your summer plans. A relationship that cooled off could soon warm up again. LEO (July 23 to August 22) While a few details involving upcoming decisions still need your attention, you fun-loving Felines can begin to spend more time enjoying your lively social life again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That long-sought-after career change could require you to move to another city. Weigh your decision carefully before either accepting or rejecting the offer out of hand. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A workplace situation can be awkward for Librans who prefer to keep

their problems private. But you might have to “tell-all” if you hope to see it resolved in your favor. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although your financial situation starts to improve this week, you still need to be cautious about money matters. Avoid major obligations, for now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your overall aspects continue to brighten, allowing you to tackle long-deferred challenges. A change in travel plans could work to your benefit. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Things seem to be slowing down for the usually restless Sea Goat. But wouldn’t a bit of respite be just what you need right now? Activity picks up by the weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Personal relationships take a positive turn for both married and single Aquarians. Professional commitments, however, could be complicated by newly emerging events. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A decision you thought was final might be reopened as new facts are discovered. This could lead to a short-term problem, but ultimately might prove beneficial. BORN THIS WEEK: Your keen interest in pursuing global events could lead you into a career as a politician or journalist. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

ance, peace and kindliness to man and beast. We can't all strike very big blows, and even the little ones count for something." • In France, writing a bad check is not just bad form — it's illegal. Violators of the "cheque sans provision" law are subject to criminal fines and can be banned from writing checks for up to five years.

• You might be shocked if you came across the term "lust-house" in, say, a n e w s p ap e r. Yo u shouldn't be, though — it doesn't mean what you think it means. The term comes to us (unsurprisingly) from German, where the word might refer to either a country house or a tavern with a beer garden. • There was a time when the game of checkers was commonly — and condescendingly — called "chess for ladies." • Avian veterinarians agree: One of the main health problems faced by pet parrots is obesity. Evidently, Polly wants

more than just a cracker. • It's interesting to s p e c u l at e w h e t h e r American singer, songwriter and record producer Kid Rock would have met with as much success had he kept the name he was given at birth, Bob Ritchie.. *** Thought for the Day: "Wear your learning, like your watch, in a private pocket, and do not pull it out and strike it merely to show you have one. If you are asked what o'clock it is, tell it, but do not proclaim it hourly and unasked, like the watchman." — Lord Chesterfield © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
