On Friday June 9 Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti met with leaders, candidates, and volunteers from seven southern Illinois counties (Marion, Jefferson, Franklin, Johnson, St. Clair, Randolph, and Williamson) to talk about how important it is for people to get involved at the grassroots level with the democratic process to help get more good people elected to the legislature to turn around the fiscal crisis in Illinois. The group heard from State Representatives Terri Bryant of Murphysboro and Dave Severin of Benton and State Senator Dale Fowler of Harrisburg. They all spoke about the need for a full and balanced budget to get our state moving in a better direction and the great

Wow! Where did the first half of 2017 go! The Fourth of July is just around the corner. It's a special holiday to celebrate Americas birthday, a time to gather with family and friends, and needless to say, a time to end the day with fireworks. So what's the Fourth of July without a Flag Cake or the grill! Cake 1 cup butter 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar 5 eggs, beaten 1/4 cup milk 2 cups sifted flour 1/2 tsp. salt

Topping 2 cups heavy cream 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar 1 tsp. cornstarch 1/2 tsp. vanilla 2 pints uniformly sized strawberries 1 pint blueberries

Cream butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs and milk. Gently fold in flour and salt. Turn batter into greased and floured 13x9x2-inch cake pan. Bake in preheated 350° oven 1 hour or until cake is firm in center. Cool on rack. Whip cream until almost thick. Sift confectioners' sugar with cornstarch; add to cream with vanilla and beat until cream holds firm peaks . Wash, hull and dry strawberries. Wash and pick over blueberries. Spread top and sides of cake with 2/3 of the frosting. In upper left hand corner, mark off a rectangle (4 inches long by 3 inches deep) for the field of stars; arrange blueberries as "stars." Align rows of strawberries as stripes on the rest of the cake. Pipe remaining frosting in bands between strawberries. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Beef Kebabs 1 cup lemon juice 1/2 cup salad oil or olive oil 1 medium onion, grated 2 cloves garlic, minced 1½ tsp. paprika 1½ tsp. pepper

2 tsp. salt 2½ lbs. beef sirloin tip or top round, cut into 1" cubes 16 mushroom caps 1 large onion, cut into 1" pieces 2 green peppers, cut into 1" pieces

Combine lemon juice, oil, grated onion, garlic and seasonings. Pour over beef and marinate at least 2 hours in the refrigerator. Drain beef cubes, reserving marinade. Thread meat on skewers alternately with mushroom caps, onion pieces and green peppers. Broil meat over hot coals (5 minutes for rare; 12 for well done), turning occasionally and basting with reserved marinade. Makes 8 skewers.

Three-Bean Salad 1 can (16 oz.) red kidney beans 1 can (16 oz.) white kidney beans 1 can (16 oz.) cut green beans 1 medium onion, sliced and separated into rings 1/4 cup vinegar

1/2 cup salad oil 1/4 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper Pinch each of thyme, basil and garlic powder

Drain beans and toss with onion rings. Combine remaining ingredients; pour over beans and toss well. Cover and chill several hours or overnight. Makes 8 servings.

Natural Tart Lemonade 5 lemons, very thinly sliced 3/4 cup sugar

2 quarts cold water

Place lemon slices in bottom of wide bowl and sprinkle with sugar. Mash well with wooden spoon and allow to stand 30 minutes. Add water and stir. Pour over ice cubes in tall glasses. Garnish with additional lemon slices. Makes 8 tall glasses. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. By Larry Cox Video Discs Q: I have acquired a collection of about 35 video discs, including features that were issued by both RCA

and 20th Century Fox. How much do you think they are worth, and where can I sell them? — E.L., New Hampshire A: Capacitance Electronic Discs or CEDS were popular during the 1980s and were first marketed by RCA. CEDs were grooved vinyl discs that allowed consumers to watch feature films in their homes. The quality was fairly good, but the system soon was overshadowed by tape formats. Video discs quickly became yet another dinosaur of our technical age. A quick check revealed that video discs are of little interest to collectors, probably due to the fact that special equipment is required to view them. I found several thousand discs available on eBay, most selling in the $4 to $10

range. Fairly typical were 10 features, including "M*A*S*H" and "Fiddler on the Roof," all for $10. An exception was the "Star Wars" trilogy, offered for $42. *** Q: I have a bound copy of Peterson's Magazine from 1870. How much do you think it is worth? — Caroline, Los Lunas, New Mexico A: Charles Peterson began his magazine in Philadelphia in 1842 and it continued until 1898. The publication began as "Ladies National Magazine," later as "Lady's World" and eventually as simply "Peterson's." It was a fashion magazine that also included recipes, lace patterns, parlor games, household hints and even house plans. The handcolored fashion plates were an attempt to bring the latest Paris clothing lines to American women and are especially collectible. I found a bound copy of Peterson's Magazine from 1870 available online for $60. According the price guide in "Vintage Maga-

zines," by Richard Russell and Elaine Gross Russell and published by Krause Books, an 1871 volume is valued at $65. *** Q: I have several albums of bicentennial stamps issued by The Franklin Philatelic Society. How much are they worth? — Ruth, New Mexico A: Most Franklin issues are difficult to sell in the secondary marketplace because its "instant collectibles" were churned out by the millions. 3 EASY STEPS TO BECOMING A RED CROSS SUMMER BLOOD DONOR The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood this summer for hospital patients in need and offers three easy steps people can take to help save lives. 1. Schedule — Use the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-7332767) to make an appointment. 2. Prepare — Get a good night’s sleep, eat a nutritious meal and drink extra fluids. 3. Give — The donation process start to finish takes about an hour. The actual donation only takes about 10 minutes. Only about 3 percent of the U.S. population gives blood, which means a heavy reliance on repeat donors to maintain a sufficient blood supply. New blood donors are especially needed during the summer months because many schools where blood drives are held — and where new donors give — are not in session, and current donors often delay giving due to summer vacations. Patients like Anna Schuster might not be here without generous volunteer blood donors. Doctors gave Schuster a 1 percent chance of survival after a collision with a semitrailer. During the first 12 hours after her accident, she received 65 units of blood. Schuster’s road to recovery has been long — 58 surgeries in the 12 years since her accident, including four in the past 14 months, with many of them requiring more blood transfusions. Every day there are thousands of patients like Schuster who rely on lifesaving blood donations. That’s why donors are urged to give now and give often. In June, the Red Cross joins blood collection agencies around the world marking World Blood Donor Day by raising awareness about the need for a readily available blood supply. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Donors can make an even greater impact by inviting others to join them in giving. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below.

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area The sheer hatred people have for each other in politics and for our President saddens me. It's no longer about a difference in views on taxes, healthcare, immigration and other policies. Each party along with its constituents has almost become a cult, unable to accept anything other than their own party's views. I've been writing this column for over 20 years, and I've never seen such totally and completely vicious behavior from so many. Look at Kathy Griffin holding the mock bloody head of President Trump. Now look at a crazed man asking which party was practicing for an upcoming ballgame, and then proceeding to open fire, wounding five while Capitol police with only pistols fought

Wednesday, June 21, 2017 off and killed the political assassin that left top GOP lawmaker House Majority Whip Steve Scalise in critical condition. There were two others left in critical condition by this heavily armed nut job. Thank God for the Capitol Hill police. This situation was bad enough, but could have been much worse had they not been there. The annual ballgame went on as planned Thursday night, with the Democrats winning and then placing the trophy in Republican Scalise's office. And to top off the recent display of hatred and contempt, what do they do in New York's Central Park but produce a Shakespearian play reconstructing the assassination of Julius Caesar. But the cast is doing a spin on this classic by portraying the assassination of Donald Trump and wife Melania. Not to mention these idiots are getting government funding and have sponsors like the New York Times. All this disgusting performance does is spread more hate. I believe it's time for people to come together and realize we — and I do mean we — the people are destroying this great nation from within. As I watch this country come apart at the seams, I'm gravely concerned about my children and their children's future. My question is, what became of respect, common decency and common sense? Only time will tell, but at this point, as colleges ban American flags, mayors bow down to those who want to destroy our history of a war in which thousands of Americans on both sides died for what they believed, and violence has become the norm instead of the exception to the rule, things don't look good. In other events of last week was the sad news that a young 22-year-old man that was held hostage in North Korea was returned in a comatose

state while three other Americans continue to be held hostage. Then last Tuesday the hearings on the Russian investigation continued by questioning U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on the same old, same old witch hunt. And as of June 18, NBC, ABC, CNN and the rest of the liberal media are talking about the FBI investigation of President Trump. The fact is there is no such investigation into why Comey, former FBI Director was fired. In my opinion, Comey was fired by Trump in the best interest of the American people because of the way the Hillary Clinton email crime was handled. It had very little to do with any Russian investigation. In closing, a dear friend dropped off a book this week written by Bill O'Reilly and Bruce Feinstein, Old School: Life in the Sane Lane, a worthwhile read. I'll close with a quote from this book that sums it all up: "And so we find ourselves in 2017, the era of the snowflake, an age when everything has to be politically correct, a time when everyone expects a trophy and everyone gets to be outraged about everything all the time." I'm wondering what my father would think if he could come back today. I can assure you this brave WWII veteran — who lied about his age so he could enlist to join his brothers in the fight to serve and protect our way of life and sanity in America — would be very disappointed. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

A Father’s Gift Some people were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. I guess I was born with a shovel in my hands and dressed in overhauls. I was taught one must work for what they want in life. My dad believed in the biblical injunction, “spare the rod, spoil the child.” Like many in previous generations, he didn’t seem to know about, “time-outs,” or “positive reinforcements.” Disrespect, ungratefulness, lying, and disobedience was exposed and punished. And yet from these generations come some of the most well-adjusted and financially stable generations in history. But no father was totally perfect because we all face the same human equation – we are all sinners in need of God’s grace. Jesus, the eminent story teller, gave us the great parable of the Prodigal Son. (Luke 15:11-32) It is the story of a father’s gift of lavish love bestowed upon a wayward son. Whatever relationship you may have had with your father, it is vital that you know and experience the great gift of our heav-

enly Father’s extravagant love. Consider these aspects of a father’s gift. A FATHER’S PERMISSION TO FAIL. A son asked his father for his inheritance. Incredibly the father gave it to him. A wise father gives his children permission to try new things, to risk something, and to even fail. Love cannot be forced, it must be caught and experienced. God gives us a free-will. (Luke 15:11-12) A FAT H E R’ S PERFECT LOVE. The prodigal son took his inheritance, went to a far country where he squandered his money, ended up feeding pigs, homeless, and broken. He is a symbol of all of humanity away from God. But “he came to himself.” He said, “I will set out and go back to my father and say, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” (Luke 15:17-18) We see the father’s

perfect love, “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20) Jesus describes our heavenly father’s incredible love for us. A FAT H E R’ S PARDON. The elder brother refused to forgive his brother, but the father extended grace and mercy and gave abundant pardon. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleans us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9) A FATHER’S PRESENTS. A father is a giver. He loves to give gifts. This father gave his son, who had returned home, presents of a robe, a ring, shoes, and a feast. God wants to make himself known to the world through his gift-giving. All his gift-giving makes known the depths of his c h a r a c t e r, n at u re , majesty, and love. At the same time, he reveals the intrinsic value of humanity. Besides salvation, He gives the powerful and varied gifts of the Holy Spirit. (I Corinthians 12:14; Romans 12) A FATHER’S PARTY.

The father called for a celebration. A feast was prepared and when the elder brother came home, he heard music and dancing. “Because my son that was dead is now alive and was lost but now found.” Jesus said that when one sinner repents, all the angels in heaven rejoice! A FATHER’S PROVISION OF T RU E RICHES. The father commanded his servants to take the son’s old, dirty, tattered garments and exchange them for a new robe and put shoes on his feet and a ring on his finger. These symbolize the true riches believers receive in Christ. A robe of righteousness, the gospel shoes of freedom in Christ and the ring of son-ship. “For as many as received him, gave he the right to become sons of God — as many as believed in his name.” (John 1:12) On Father’s Day, I think of my father. But more importantly, I think of a father’s gift of His only begotten son — Jesus Christ. And his amazing love for you and me. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

EVERY DAY IS INTERNET SECURITY DAY BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MT. VERNON, IL

Being safe online is important every day. There may be days devoted to internet security awareness, but you need to be careful every time you go online.

Do you know what it takes to be safe online? You probably connect daily to get information, shop, socialize, or work. Every time you go online, you need to

avoid the risk of theft or fraud. Here are some tips to use while visiting the Social Security website and the other websites you use. • Use Strong Passwords — Strong passwords have at least eight characters and include capital letters, numbers, and non-letter characters. These passwords make it harder for

someone to hack your account. • Don’t Recycle Passwords — Although it requires effort to think of new passwords constantly, it provides safety when you do. What if you use the same password for every site and you lose your password? If someone finds it, they could get access to all your accounts. Many people choose to reuse — don’t be one of them. • Take Advantage of

Wednesday, June 21, 2017 Multifactor Authentication — Many websites offer the option to use a second factor — or method — in addition to just a username and password to ensure that only you access your information. Using more than one factor to establish identity makes it harder for someone to get into your account and steal your personal information. Beginning June 10, 2017, Social Security requires multifactor authentication to access a my Social Security account. Customers choose whether to receive a onetime security code to either their phone or email in order create a new account or sign into their account. Visit this link to find out more about how to secure your personal my Social Security account: www. socialsecurity.gov/my account/verifyandprotect id.html. Consider using multifactor authentication whenever it’s offered to protect your information. • Read Scam Alerts — For information about fraudulent activities related to Social Security, you can find information at our blog Social Security Matters under the Newsroom section at blog.social security.gov. One way to avoid identity theft is to create your own my Social Security account, if you haven’t already. When you

have an account, no one else can set up an account using your information. Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General investigates fraud involving Social Security and they publish Fraud Advisories at oig.ssa.gov/newsroom/ news-release. The Federal Trade Commission website publishes information about scams that appear in the news at www.consumer.ftc.gov/scam-alerts. You’ll want to be aware of current scams to avoid being tricked. • Review Your Online Accounts and Credit Reports — Just as you review your earnings record with Social Security for accuracy at http://www. socialsecurity.gov/myaccount, you should review your bank and credit card accounts for accuracy. Get a free copy of your credit report available annually from the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) at www.annualcreditreport. com/ and check it for incorrect entries. Protecting your identity can be daunting. Guarding your personal information requires investing some time, but is worth it. Discourage theft and fraud by adopting these security practices when you use the internet.
