IDNR URGES PUBLIC TO LEAVE FIREWORKS DISPLAYS TO THE PROFESSIONALS The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is reminding organizations and individuals sponsoring fireworks displays in Illinois to be sure their fireworks vendor has the required state licenses and certificates issued by the IDNR and the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) prior to their fireworks show. The Illinois Explosives Act requires that anyone who purchases, possesses, uses, transfers, stores or disposes of explosives, including display fireworks, must have an explosives license and explosives storage certificate issued by the IDNR. Licensing and storage requirements administered by the IDNR do not apply to Consumer Fireworks (classified as 1.4 explosives). Approve d C ons u m e r Fireworks are regulated by the OSFM and are permitted only in villages, counties and

municipalities that have passed ordinances allowing such displays. Consumer fireworks may be purchased and displayed only by adults who have obtained permits from their local jurisdiction. Hand held fireworks, including fire crackers, roman candles, and bottle rockets are not approved for sale or use in Illinois. The Illinois Explosives Act is administered by the IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals’ Explosives and Aggregate Division. This Division is staffed by trained and experienced blasting specialists located throughout Illinois. In addition to requiring comprehensive licensing, training and examination for individuals, the law requires that unattended display fireworks and explosives must be stored in an explosives magazine, storage facility or container that is inspected and certified by IDNR.

IDNR currently has 2,192 individuals licensed for the use of explosives in Illinois, of which approximately 1,033 are specifically for the use of display fireworks. There are 786 certified explosives storage magazines in Illinois, which contain nearly 45 million pounds of explosives. Of those storage magazines, 139 are certified specifically for the storage of display fireworks. Anyone possessing, using, transferring or purchasing display fireworks without a valid IDNR individual explosives license or storage certificate is violating Illinois law and could incur penalties. A violation of the Illinois Explosives Act can be a Class 3 felony, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. In addition, the IDNR can assess administrative fines for violations involving display fireworks and other explosives.

Emergency responders are reminded to contact IDNR and the OSFM immediately with reports of personal injury or property damage resulting from the use of explosives, including display fireworks. For more information on the IDNR explosives regulatory program, log on to http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/ mines/EAD/Pages/ ExplosivesHandling Storage. aspx. In addition, for more information concerning the OSFM fireworks regulatory program, log on to http:// w w w.sf m.illinois.gov/ Public/ConsumerFireworks. To report an explosives incident or accident concerning display fireworks, the public should contact the IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals, Explosives and Aggregate Division at 217-782-9976 and the OSFM at 217-785-0969.

VFW LADIES AUXILIARY

SATURDAY NIGHT BINGO JULY 1ST • 7:00

Cooking With Lizzie

Grilled Burgers With A Twist I love summer for a lot of reasons, but one is I get to say to my husband — my better half — what's for dinner? It's chilling time for me but grilling time for him! And nothing's better on the grill than good old hamburgers, for parties as well as casual dinners. Personally, my favorite is grilled sirloin burgers topped with swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms. Below are a few new twists for burgers, perfect for the 4th of July with sides of slaw or potatoes salad, sliced tomatoes and a flag cake.

Soy Dipped Burgers 1/2 cup each soy sauce and water 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed 2 tsp. grated fresh ginger 2 T. Worcestershire 6 T. firmly packed brown sugar

3 lbs. lean ground beef 8 hamburger buns or French rolls, split and buttered Thinly sliced tomatoes Green bell pepper rings

In bowl, mix soy, water, garlic, ginger, Worcestershire, and sugar. Shape beef into 8 patties, each about 1 inch thick; place in large heavy-duty plastic bag. Pour soy marinade over patties in bag; seal bag securely and rotate to distribute marinade. Place in shallow baking pan. Refrigerate (or place in picnic cooler) for 1 to 2 hours. Lift patties from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade). Place patties on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once and basting several times with marinade, until done to your liking; cut to test (about 10 minutes for medium-rare). When you turn patties, place buns, cut side down, around outside of grill to toast. Serve patties on buns, with tomatoes and bell pepper rings. Makes 8 servings.

Taco Burgers 1 can (about 1 lb.) refried beans 2 medium-size tomatoes, sliced 1 large ripe avocado, pitted, peeled, sliced, and tossed with 2 tsp. lemon juice 1 lb. lean ground beef 1 small onion, chopped

1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp. Worcestershire 1/3 cup canned diced green chiles 3/4 tsp. ground cumin 6 corn tortillas Prepared taco sauce

Place beans in pan and heat through; keep warm. Place tomatoes and avocado in separate dishes. In bowl, combine beef, onion, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire, chiles, and cumin. Cook, turning once, until browned and done to your liking; cut to test (4 to 6 minutes for medium-rare). To serve, heat tortillas on grill just until softened (15 to 20 seconds), turning often with tongs. Spread beans on tortilla; then place meat patty, tomatoes, and avocado slices on one side and drizzle with taco sauce. Fold other side of tortilla over meat and vegetables; eat out of hand. Makes 6 servings.

Russia... Russia... Russia. How long can the liberal media play on the same subject by just adding a new twist or two? Last week it was reported that the Barack Obama administration was aware the Russians were trying to help Trump and hurt Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections. This allegedly happened in early fall and Obama said or did nothing about it. Oh, the web they weaved. The truth is absolutely no one hurt Hillary Clinton's chances of winning except Hillary Clinton's corruption. She hurt herself. The bottom line is the Democratic Party picked a candidate that was unelectable. And speaking of Hillary Clinton, early last week it was reported on CNN and MSNBC that some democrats were very concerned about Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-inlaw, as well as General Michael Flynn who resigned after less than a month as national security advisor under Donald Trump. Both have security clearance. Democrats want them stripped of their security clearance. It then occurred to me that usually when Chuck Schumer and other top democrats start pointing a finger and acting like five-year-olds, it's time to look a little deeper, and upon some digging, deeper it got. What I found was Hillary Clinton and seven of her top aides still (yes

still) have their State Department security clearance over a year after the FBI concluded they (referring to Clinton and her aides) were "extremely careless" handling sensitive information. By the way, who said that Mrs. Clinton, along with seven of her aides, was "extremely careless"? None other than the FBI Director at the time, James Comey, while Clinton was under investigation for using a private email address and home brewed server to send and receive classified information. Remember she destroyed 33,000 emails, some classified, and she and her aides still have security clearance today. They have access to classified and top secret documents. This information didn't surface until Obama left the White House. Frankly, I find this unimaginably offensive for someone that, in my opinion, should be in jail for a number of questionable offenses. Where's Chuck Schumer on her aides and her State Department security clearance? Why hasn't the liberal media reported on this? By the way, Fox News did try to contact Clinton on this matter; she could not b e re a che d for comment. However, Sen. Chuck Grassly (R-TN) revealed Clinton's security status recently. Grassly also said that as early as 2015 and 2016 former Secretary of State John Kerry ignored his queries on this matter.

So don't be surprised if current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson does get involved in this matter. And so he should! On to the new healthcare bill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week he wants a Senate vote this week on Thursday, and so it will be. I believe at this time the new healthcare bill faces a huge challenge, and in my opinion, it has a 50 / 50 chance of passing. Frankly, my attitude is unlike former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who said of the ACA (Obamacare), “But we have to pass the [health care] bill so that you can find out what’s in it....” And she recently condemned Trump's new bill even though she had not a clue what was in it, and said so. Pelosi said, "I haven't read it." My feelings are, I really can't comment much. I have read some of it and have started looking at what's been proposed. I believe we don't need to rush on this. It's important to get it right... the exact opposite of the ACA. Let's not make another mess for the American people, but it's also important because healthcare is one sixth of the American economy. BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MT. VERNON, IL

Being safe online is important every day. There may be days devoted to internet security awareness, but you need to be careful every time you go online. Do you know what it takes to be safe online? You probably connect daily to get information, shop, socialize, or work. Every time you go online, you need to avoid the risk of theft or fraud. Here are some tips to use while visiting the Social Security website and the other websites you use. • Use Strong Passwords — Strong passwords have at least eight characters and include capital letters, numbers, and non-letter characters. These passwords make it harder for someone to hack your account. • Don’t Recycle Pass-

words — Although it requires effort to think of new passwords constantly, it provides safety when you do. What if you use the same password for every site and you lose your password? If someone finds it, they could get access to all your accounts. Many people choose to reuse — don’t be one of them. • Take Advantage of Multifactor Authentication — Many websites offer the option to use a second factor — or method — in addition to just a username and password to ensure that only you access your information. Using more than one factor to establish identity makes it harder for someone to get into your account and steal your personal information. Beginning June 10, 2017, Social

Security requires multifactor authentication to access a my Social Security account. Customers choose whether to receive a onetime security code to either their phone or email in order create a new account or sign into their account. Visit this link to find out more about how to secure your personal my Social Security account: www. socialsecurity.gov/my account/verifyandprotect id.html. Consider using multifactor authentication whenever it’s offered to protect your information. • Read Scam Alerts — For information about fraudulent activities related to Social Security, you can find information at our blog Social Security Matters under the Newsroom section at blog.social

security.gov. One way to avoid identity theft is to create your own my Social Security account, if you haven’t already. When you have an account, no one else can set up an account using your information. Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General investigates fraud involving Social Security and they publish Fraud Advisories at oig.ssa.gov/newsroom/ news-release. The Federal Trade Commission website publishes information about scams that appear in the news at www.consumer. ftc.gov/scam-alerts. You’ll want to be aware of current scams to avoid being tricked. • Review Your Online Accounts and Credit Reports — Just as you review your earnings record with Social Security for accuracy at http://www. socialsecurity.gov/myaccount, you should review your bank and credit card accounts for accuracy. Get a free copy of your credit report available annually from the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) at www.annualcreditreport. com/ and check it for incorrect entries. Protecting your identity can be daunting. Guarding your personal information requires investing some time, but is worth it. Discourage theft and fraud by adopting these security practices when you use the internet.

• "When packing for the kids to go to camp, here's a tip we've used over and over again: Put all elements of each outfit (top, bottom, undergarments, socks, etc.) folded into a gallon-size zipper-close bag. I add a plastic grocery bag as well.

Each day, the child puts on a fresh outfit, then puts yesterday's clothes into the plastic grocery bag. You can tell what's been worn, and it's all ready at the start of day — no looking for socks or underwear!" — M.H. in North Carolina• Keep your car's

back seat clean with a sheet. Drape a twin-size sheet over the back seat. Tuck in all around. Use scissors to make a small opening for the seat belts. Now dirt and crumbs will be contained in the sheet, and you can shake it off when you get to your destination or home! Works great for road trips and beach days. • When Mom or Dad travels for work, it can be hard on the parent and kids staying home. Try this trick: Record yourself reading a story. The child can play the recording as he or she follows the story in the book. Or, make a video for younger kids.

By Larry Cox WWII Ration Books Q: I have two War Ration Books, and I wonder if they are worth keeping or should I cash them in. — Helen, Decatur, Illinois A: Millions of ration books were issued during World War II. They were intended to prevent the hoarding of such goods as coffee, sugar, meat and other items in short supply due to the war. Ration books generally sell in the $5 to $25 range, but unlike savings bonds, you can't cash them in as you wish. *** Q: I have two crocks that were made in Parkersburg, West Virginia, by A.P. worth? — Leonard, Salisbury, Maryland A : A l e x and e r Pol k Donaghho moved to Parkersburg from Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, in 1870. He built a kiln there because of the rich clay deposits and continued in Parkersburg until 1903, when he ceased operations. Your crocks are more than a century old, much earlier than you suspected. Donaghho is best known for his hand-decorated stoneware. He later used stencils, but it is his earlier pieces that bring record prices. A salt-glazed crock with a cobalt design recently sold at Cowwan's Auction Company for $270. *** Q: I have an RCA Victor Collectors Issue of Glenn Miller and his Orchestra,

which I purchased for my husband in 1963. Does it have any value? — Barbara, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: I found your set referenced in the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975, compiled by Ted Neely (Krause Books). According to Neely, your limited edition was originally issued in 1953, and that first pressing is valued in the $75 to $150 range. Since your set is a later issue, it would be worth less. I found several sets listed on eBay, mostly in the $50 to $75 range. *** Q: I have some baseball record books called "Who's Who in the Major Leagues," by John Carmichael. The ones I have are 1944, 1945 and 1947. These are baseball history and I am curious

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Keys of Freedom Research shows that learning to forgive those who hurt us can have powerful benefits. In 2004, some 40 researchers met to review their findings in probing the healing power of making peace. Lisa Collier Cool shared the results of the research in her article “The Power of Forgiving – Best Way to Heal a Heartâ€? in the May, 2004 issue of “Readers Digestâ€? that, on top of having profound emotional benefits, purging our anger through forgiveness may also help heal some of what ails us physically. In “The Lord’s Prayerâ€?, Jesus taught, “And forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who haveÂŹ s i n n e d a g a i n s t u s .â€? (Matthew 6:9-15) Jesus taught that there are consequences of unforgiveness. If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. We must choose to forgive for our own benefit as well as the benefit of others. Jesus gave a parable of an unjust servant who refused to forgive a fellow slave, even though he himself was magnanimously forgiven a large debt. “And his lord was wroth and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was due him.â€? (Matthew 18:21-35) Dr. Neil T. Anderson, in his book Victory Over the Darkness, says, “I have had the privilege to help people around the world find their freedom in Christ. In every case, forgiveness was an issue and in many cases, it was ‘THE’ issue that needed to be resolved.â€? FORGIVENESS IS REQ U I R E D B Y G O D. (Matthew 6:14-15) On the cross, Jesus prayed for those who nailed him there, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.â€? We must base our relationships with others in the same way which God bases his relationship with

us – love, acceptance, and forgiveness. F ORG I V E N E S S I S NECESSARY. To be free from the traps and bondages of Satan, one must forgive those who have caused pain. (II Corinthians 2:11) FORGIVENESS IS REQUIRED, if we desire to be like Jesus and have his peace. As believers, we need to forgive. (Ephesians 4:31-32) “You mean I’m just supposed to let these people off the hook? Yes! “’Vengeance is mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. (Romans 12:19) Forgiveness doesn’t mean we condone or allow continual sin or wrong.

Sometimes we must confront others concerning their actions. I have found that when I choose to forgive regardless of how I feel, God will give me the grace to do so. These keys to freedom in forgiveness have helped me over the years in dealing with daily offenses. ASK God to bring to your memory the people you need to forgive. Make a list of them including the wrongs or any wrongs you have done. ACKNOWLEDGE the power of the cross. “He who knew no sin became sin for us. (II Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13) “Forgive as Christ has forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:32) AGREE to forgive regardless of how you feel. “Forgiveness is a crisis of the will, a conscious choice to let the other person off the hook and free yourself from the past. (Dr. Neil T. Anderson)

ABSOLVE the person through the prayer of forgiveness. Pray specifically. (Matthew 5:44) ANTICIPATE positive changes in you. Don’t expect your prayer of forgiveness to necessarily change the other person, but it will begin a change in you. ACCLAIM God’s grace and mercy to you. Thank him for the lessons learned and the personal growth gained through the offense of others and your decision to forgive. (Romans 8:2829) Do you want to be free from life’s hurts and heartaches? Receive the forgiveness of Christ and forgive others from your heart. “Forgive ‘me’ of ‘my’ sins, just as ‘I’ forgive those who have sinned against ‘me’. (Matthew 6:12)

Washington County Animal Control’s

D E A R P AW ’ S CORNER: It never seems to end, despite all the public-service announcements: People still leave their pets locked in their cars on hot summer days. I just spent an hour in front of the supermarket, with my groceries melting in my own car, making a report to a police officer who had to break someone's car window to get in and rescue two dogs panting inside. The windows weren't even cracked, and the

sun was beginning to get hot. This is Georgia in early summer, and the heat is merciless. I locked up my groceries and went looking for the owner first. I had the store page its customers, and I went into each of the small stores of the shopping center and asked if the owner was there. No response, so I called the police. It's amazing how fast the owner appeared after the police officer, who couldn't unlock the door using a tool, smashed in the passenger side window. The owner was pretty mad at me, but I gave him his chance. He was even madder when he got a citation. But I don't care, even if the ice cream in my car did melt. It's worth it to know that those dogs weren't injured. — Doreen A., Marietta, Georgia

DEAR DOREEN: I'm so glad those dogs weren't hurt! Your story is a great example of what to do if you notice pets in a locked car. It also IS OK to call the

police first so that the door can be opened faster; you can enlist others to search for the owners while waiting for the police. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved English author J.R.R. Tolkien, best known for fantasy tales "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings," who made the following sage observation about his chosen genre: "I have been a lover of fairystories since I learned to read. Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if, when he cannot do

so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison walls?" • You might be surprised to learn that thieves, too, have a patron saint: Saint Dismas. Incidentally, he's also the patron saint of prisoners and funeral directors. • You're probably aware that nocturnal animals are active at night and that diurnal animals are active during

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Information you need might be coming in sporadically, but at least what you’re getting is valuable. Continue to wait until more is available before acting on that career move. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You continue on an upbeat cycle, and with that strong Taurean energy you should see favorable results from your hard work. A pleasant surprise awaits you in your private life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding needs more time to be worked out. Don’t give up on it just yet. Remain open to providing explanations, if called for. Another friend offers good advice. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Fast action can correct a seemingly minor problem that has taken on some unexpectedly difficult aspects. Stay with it until it’s resolved. News on a more positive note is due soon. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some snags could cause delays in those plans you’re eager to see put into operation. But be patient. The Clever Cat will soon have good reason to celebrate a job well done. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to let that Virgan sensitivity dissuade you from being the hardheaded realist you should be at this time. Your goals are in sight. Stay focused on them. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A more positive aspect opens up, allowing you to make some impor-

the day. But what about creatures that prefer the twilight hours? Yep, they have a name, too: They're crepuscular. • Those who study such things say that ecdysiasts — those performers better known as stripteasers — are likely to be first-born children. • In a recent survey of Americans and Britons, conducted on behalf of meditation app Calm. com, respondents reported that they get their best sleep of the week on Thursday nights, while Sunday night is the worst for sleeping. • In India at one time, it was believed that eggshells held clues to the

tant changes in a personal situation. Remember to seek balance and avoid extremes as you proceed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good week to get out and enjoy the fine times you missed while you were so deep in those workaday projects. Be sure to share it with that special person. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Work and play are in balance this week. However, expect news that could tip things toward the workplace for quite a while. But all to a good end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re more productive on the job than you have been in some time. That’s good. But be careful not to overlook some situations developing in your private life. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’ve been doing a lot for others (as usual). But now it’s time to focus on your needs, including finally going on that long-delayed trip you’ve been hoping to make. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s all smoothly going on ‘twixt you and that very special person in your life. But a colleague causes some disruption on the job that you might be called on to help settle. BORN THIS WEEK: You are sensitive to the needs of others. But you’re no pushover.
