So it's going to happen after all: Floyd Mayweather (49-0) will take on Conor McGregor (0-0) Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be historic on several levels. If Mayweather wins, he will have a 50-0 record, breaking the 49-0 tie he now shares with Rocky Marciano. Also, it likely will be the highest grossing fight in history, pulling in well north of $600 million when you factor in merchandising and licensing. Vegas odds have Mayweather as the 6-1 favorite, but 90 percent of the action has been on McGregor, according to Caesar's Palace. My advice to any sane person? Don't bet on it. I see the fight working itself out in the following scenarios:

1. Floyd toys with McGregor for 3-4 rounds before viciously knocking him out in the 5th or 6th; 2. McGregor is disqualified for kicking or doing something bizarre; 3. The ref stops the fight for humane reasons because McGregor won't go down, and; 4. Floyd slips on McGregor's blood and McGregor catches him with a hard left and knocks Mayweather out, scoring the greatest upset in sports history. That's my take. Here are a few other educated takes: Sugar Ray Leonard: "It's boxing, the dominant boxer wins ... they say it's gonna make a mockery out of [boxing], I don't think so ... not one fight." (TMZ Sports) Mike Ty s o n : "McGregor doesn't win in a boxing match ... [he's] going to look really

ridiculous boxing him." (Sirius XM Channel 93) Oscar De La Hoya: "McGregor is not a boxer. And he's going up against the best boxer on the planet? In our generation? Against Mayweather? And he's 0-0? It's impossible! I couldn't beat him!" M a x Ke l l e r m a n , boxing analyst: "The lack of respect for the discipline is astonishing. He's been doing this since he was a baby. The idea that Conor McGregor can win is absurd. Mayweather will be able to hit McGregor anywhere he pleases, whenever he pleases ... [he will KO McGregor] whenever he wants, however he wants." Joe Rogan, UFC announcer: "[McGregor] is fighting one of the best if not the best boxer ever. Most likely this is not going to work out well for him. The only way it could work out well is if Floyd takes him lightly and Conor clips him, Conor mugs him, Conor does some old-school Bernard Hopkins [stuff ] in the clinch." Jim Lampley : "McGregor's style is exactly the wrong style for f ig ht ing Floyd Mayweather. He's not an attacker; he's a counterpuncher ... I'm a hundred percent certain the boxer is going to win." (Fight Hub TV) Whenever you enter the ring, the other guy always has a puncher's chance. A fluke left out of nowhere? It's happened before. You never know. Think Rocky and Apollo. By the way, what does Rocky think? Sylvester Stallone (Rocky): "Mayweather would be facing firstdegree murder charges [after the fight]. It wouldn't even be fair." I wouldn't bet on that either, but we'll see soon enough. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

UPCOMING HUMMINGBIRD FESTIVAL The home of Bob and Donita Morris near Walnut Hill, Illinois will be the site for a Hummingbird Festival scheduled for Thursday, July 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dozens of hummingbirds should be present to "wow" festival visitors. Vernon Kleen, a licensed hummingbird bander and President of the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, will begin the festival with a short discussion about hummingbirds and explain why they are banded. After the discussion, hummingbirds will be captured,

Visitors will be permitted to "adopt" birds; although there is no longer a fee for the adoptions, donations to the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders would be appreciated. Those who adopt a bird will receive an attractive signed certificate, may be able to release the bird they adopted, and will be notified if their bird is ever recaptured. If hummingbirds appeal to you, then plan on visiting the Festival at the Morris home, 220 Medlin

and educational services to monitor, protect and enhance the populations of Illinois' native birds and their unique environments. Donations of sugar are appreciated but not mandatory.

3/4 tsp. dry mustard 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/4 tsp. pepper 2 cloves garlic (minced or pressed)

Cut meat crosswise into steaks about 1½" thick. Then apply tenderizer according to package directions. Cut meat into 1½" cubes and place in large bowl. To prepare PineappleWine Marinade, in bowl, stir together all marinade ingredients. Pour marinade over meat; stir to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours or until next day, stirring occasionally. In small bowl, stir together butter, oil, and 1/3 cup of marinade drained from meat; set aside. Discard remaining marinade. On long, sturdy metal skewers, thread meat alternately with corn, bell peppers, onions and pineapple. Brush all over with butter mixture. Place skewers on lightly greased grill 4 to 6" above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning and basting frequently with butter mixture, until meat is done to your liking; cut to test (about 15 minutes for medium-rare). Makes about 8 servings.

East-West Grilled Steak 1 to 2 T. salad oil 4 beef tenderloin steaks (8 to 10 oz. each), cut about 1½" thick 1/4 tsp. coarsely ground pepper 1 T. minced parsley

1 tsp. each rubbed sage, dry rosemary, and thyme leaves 2 T. soy sauce 1 T. oyster sauce 2 tsp. each sugar and brandy

Rub oil on both sides of each steak to coat evenly. In small bowl, combine pepper, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme; rub mixture into both sides of each steak. In 9" square pan, stir together soy, oyster sauce, sugar and brandy until sugar is dissolved. Turn steaks in soy mixture, one at a time, coating evenly. Set steaks side by side in pan; cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or up to 4 hours. Place steaks on lightly greased grill 4 to 6" above a solid bed of medium coals. Cook, turning as needed, until browned on both sides and done to your liking; cut to test (about 20 minutes for rare). Brush any remaining soy mixture over steaks as they cook. Makes 4 servings.

Skewered Beef with Apple and Lettuce 1 piece fresh ginger (about a 1" cube), minced 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 T. each dry white wine and firmly packed brown sugar 1 T. sesame seeds 1½ tsp. sesame oil

CRITICAL RED CROSS BLOOD SHORTAGE PROMPTS EMERGENCY CALL FOR DONATIONS

The American Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types to give now and help save lives. Blood donations have fallen short of expectations for the past two months, resulting in about 61,000 fewer donations than needed and causing a significant draw down of the Red Cross blood supply. The shortfall is the equivalent of the Red Cross not collecting any blood donations for more than four days.

“It’s crucial that people donate now to meet the needs of patients every day and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood,” said Joe Zydlo, External Communications Manager of the MissouriIllinois Blood Services Region. “Every day, blood and platelet donors can help save lives, and right now these heroes are needed to give as soon as possible.” Donate blood at one of the drives listed below or schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood

Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767). July 13, 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., Bluford Ruritan Club, 814 6th Street, Bluford. Sad day in Illinois? It depends on how you look at it or which side you're on! As one state representative said, I voted yes because I care about the state's future. But first up, after a number of requests for who voted which way, as promised, read on. On Sunday, July 2 the Illinois State House of Representatives vote was 72 to 45 to approve the income tax hike. Listed below is a breakdown of how they voted. Democrats voting yes (57): Ammons, Andrade, Arroyo, Beiser, D. Burke, K. Burke, Cassidy, Chapa LaVia, Conroy, Conyears-Ervin, Crespo, Currie, D'Amico, Davis, DeLuca, Drury, Evans, Feigenholtz, Fine, Flowers, Ford, Gabel, Gordon-Booth, Greenwood, Guzzardi, Harper, G. Harris, Hernandez, Hoffman, Hurley, Jones, Kifowit, Lang, Lilly, Madigan, Mah, Martwick, C. Mitchell, Moeller, Nekritz, Phelps, Riley, Rita, Sente, Sims, Slaughter, Soto, Stratton, Tabares, Thapedi, Turner, Wallace, Walsh, Welch, Williams, Willis, Zalewski. Republicans voting yes (15): Andersson, Bryant, Cavaletto, Davidsmeyer, Fortner, Hammond, D. Harris, Hays, Jimenez, Meier, B. Mitchel l, Phi l lips, Pritchard, Reis, Unes. Democrats voting no (10): Connor, Costello, Halpin, Manley, Mayfield, Moylan, Mussman, Scherer, Stuart, Yingling. Republicans voting no (35): Batinick, Bellock, Bennett, Bourne, Brady, Breen, Butler, Cabello, Demmer, Durkin, Frese, Halbrook, Ives, Jesiel, Long, McAuliffe, McCombie, McDermed, McSweeney, Morrison, Olsen, Parkhurst, Reick, Sauer, Severin, S k i l l i c o r n , S o m m e r, Sosnowski, Spain, Stewart, Swanson, Wehrli, Welter, B. Wheeler, K. Wheeler. Republicans not voting (1): Winger (exc us ed absence). After Sunday's vote Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed the bill. What followed? Speaker Michael Madigan s cheduled a Thursday afternoon session after a number of attempts to get a quorum (which requires 60 representatives) to vote to override the Governor's veto of the bill which consisted of approximately $5 billion in

Wednesday, July 12, 2017

tax hikes. Madigan also delivered the following statement: "House Democrats look forward to working with our colleagues on the other side of the aisle to begin healing the wounds of the last several years." I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the only way in Springfield is Michael Madigan's way, and folks, that is the problem, even though the Governor urged the house not to undo his veto by saying, "This tax hike will solve none of our problems. In fact, it will make our problem worse, not better." So thanks to the reluctant Democrat lawmakers the original vote held, and the Governor's veto didn't hold. And the income tax increase passed, with absolutely NO reform thanks to the no common sense guy Michael Madigan. Below is a news release from State Rep. John Cavaletto after the Thursday vote. "Rep. Cavaletto Votes to Oppose a 32% Permanent Tax Increase on Families" State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem), a member of the Cost Benefit Analysis Committee, today voted to supp or t the Governor’s veto of the budget plan that raises the state income tax rate from 3.75% to 4.95%. “My vote on Sunday for the proposal in front of us was based on the ‘junk bond’ rating threat to the State of Illinois and that huge negative impact on borrowing and the cost to Illinois taxpayers,” said Rep. Cavaletto. “But I found out this morning directly from Moody’s that this budget plan doesn’t seem to help and they are still considering a downgrade from Baa3 rating level because Illinois’ debt obligations does not have stable funding to meet our obligations, even with this tax increase,” Cavaletto continued. “The more than one thousand calls, emails and Facebook messages I have received have been about 10 to 1 opposed to any more taxes. The message from my constituents has been loud and clear that they do not want a tax increase so I had to oppose this plan with a permanent tax increase,” Cavaletto said. As part of this plan there is a 5% across the board cut of state agencies and a 10%

cut in the funding to Illinois colleges and universities. But there are not enough reforms to change the way government spending is handled in Illinois. “We’re pushing people out of this state with high taxes and property taxes and we need reforms and tax relief to keep people here and attract more with job growth,” Cavaletto concluded. *** Below is a news release f rom St ate S en. Ky le McCarter. "McCarter: House Passes Punishing Tax Increase" State Sen. Kyle McCarter said he’s not surprised by the passage of a punishing tax increase because that’s the only way the Illinois General Assembly can keep up with its insatiable appetite for spending. “They want big government; and they want the citizens of Illinois to pay for it, even though Illinois’ fiscal problems are not the fault of the citizens,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “The ones at fault are the legislatures of the past that have failed to live within their means.” *** Sen. McCarter said he expects Illinois taxpayers to respond like they did after the 2011 state income tax hike. In the immediate years following that increase, 200,000 taxpayers left Illinois for opportunities in other states. He said the only way to save Illinois is for government to learn to live within its means; or more accurately, learn to live within the taxpayers’ means. On Tuesday, July 4 the Illinois Senate voted 36-18 to approve the income tax hike. A breakdown of how they voted will be published next week. In conclusion, it should be abundantly clear to everyone no matter what compromise Rauner is willing to make Micheal Madigan will not agree to any deal that includes actual reform. Springfield needs to be shaken up! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said, ‘No . . . If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead’” (Luke 16:19-31 NLJV). Jesus gave us a message from hell via the rich man, “It’s hot here. Don’t come here! It’s terrifying, terrible, and the torment of flames is forever.” The good news is that paradise — heaven — awaits those who will believe and receive God’s provision of salvation through Christ’s redemption on the cross. Lazarus the beggar received the riches of God’s grace. The penitent thief on

the cross next to Jesus had Christ’s promise, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43 NLT). Some erroneously ask how a God of love could send anyone to hell. But God in love has provided the way to heaven and everlasting life. Man must choose or reject the only means to life. Scriptures teach that “The Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9). The rich man was selfish, self-centered, and lived for only this life. Lazarus was shown into the joys of everlasting life in heaven. The choices we make today will determine our eternal destiny. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My wife recently received orders to transfer to a new duty station in Germany. I'm excited to go with her, but the problem is that we can't take our two cats. I don't want to give them up to a shelter, and I've asked relatives nearby if they can take them, but they can't. What can I do? — Proud Army Spouse in Maryland DEAR ARMY SPOUSE: Is there a health reason why you can't bring along the cats? From my research, pets are allowed to accompany military families to Germany when transfer-

ring to a new assignment, or what's known as a permanent change of station (PCS). The article "PCS and Your Pet" in military.com explains many of the details involved in moving to an overseas base with your pet. If your cats are too sick or old to handle the trip, then you should look at finding them a new home. However, if they're healthy, several resources are available to help you plan and bring them along. Get a certificate of health from your veterinarian as soon as possible to avoid any problems with bringing them to a new country. Coordinate with the military offices that handle the details of PCS — you likely must contact several — to make travel arrangements for you, your wife and the cats. Find out if more documentation is needed for the cats. You may need to pay for the cats' transportation, and

Wednesday, July 12, 2017 you'll have to buy airlinerated pet carriers. Contact the agency helping you complete the move to Germany. Also contact the base veterinar-

ian, who may have additional advice in helping you and your cats move smoothly overseas. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
