Don't Bet on It So it's going to happen after all: Floyd Mayweather (49-0) will take on Conor McGregor (0-0) Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be historic on several levels. If Mayweather wins, he will have a 50-0 record, breaking the 49-0 tie he now s h are s w it h R o c k y Marciano. Also, it likely will be the highest grossing fight in history, pulling in well north of $600 million when you factor in merchandising and licensing. Ve g a s o d d s h ave Mayweather as the 6-1 favorite, but 90 percent of the action has been on McGregor, according to Caesar's Palace. My advice to any sane person? Don't bet on it. I see the fight working itself out in the following scenarios: 1. Floyd toys with McGregor for 3-4 rounds before viciously knocking him out in the 5th or 6th; 2. McGregor is disqualified for kicking or doing something bizarre; 3. The ref stops the fight for humane reasons

1. How many times has Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw led the majors in strikeouts for a season? 2. When was the last time a reliever won a Rookie of the Year award? 3. Six Division I college football players have recorded three seasons of at least 1,500 rushing yards. Name four of them. 4. Who was the first

because McGregor won't go down, and; 4. Floyd slips on McGregor's blood and McGregor catches him with a hard left and knocks Mayweather out, scoring the greatest upset in sports history. That's my take. Here are a few other educated takes: Sugar Ray Leonard: "It's boxing, the dominant boxer wins ... they say it's gonna make a mockery out of [boxing], I don't think so ... not one fight." (TMZ Sports) Mike Tyson: "McGregor doesn't win in a boxing match ... [he's] going to look really ridiculous boxing him." (Sirius XM Channel 93) Oscar De La Hoya: "McGregor is not a boxer. And he's going up against the best boxer on the planet? In our generation? Against Mayweather? And he's 0-0? It's impossible! I couldn't beat him!" Max Kellerman, boxing analyst: "The lack of respect for the discipline is astonishing. He's been doing this since he was a baby. The idea that Conor McGregor can win is Harlem Globetrotter to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame? 5. How many times have the Columbus Blue Jackets reached the playoffs in the franchise's 16 NHL seasons? 6. In 2016, Stanford won its second straight NCAA Division I men's soccer title. Name the last school to win back-toback titles. 7. Ohio State won its second straight NCAA men's volleyball championship in 2017, becoming the third consecutive school to win back-toback titles. Name the

absurd. Mayweather will be able to hit McGregor anywhere he pleases, whenever he pleases ... [he will KO McGregor] whenever he wants, however he wants." Joe Rogan, UFC announcer: "[McGregor] is fighting one of the best if not the best boxer ever. Most likely this is not going to work out well for him. The only way it could work out well is if Floyd takes him lightly and Conor clips him, Conor mugs him, Conor does some old-school Bernard Hopkins [stuff ] in the clinch." Jim Lampley: "McGregor's style is exactly the wrong style for fighting Floyd Mayweather. He's not an attacker; he's a counterpuncher ... I'm a hundred percent certain the boxer is going to win." (Fight Hub TV) Whenever you enter the ring, the other guy always has a puncher's chance. A fluke left out of nowhere? It's happened before. You never know. Think Rocky and Apollo. By the way, what does Rocky think? Sylvester Stallone (Rocky): "Mayweather would be facing first-degree murder charges [after the fight]. It wouldn't even be fair." I wouldn't bet on that either, but we'll see soon enough. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

NEW AGREEMENT BETWEEN MARION COUNTY TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH 911 AND SUPERVISOR OF ASSESSMENTS WITH LIVE WELL — BE WELL PROGRAM In April of this year, 911 Director Stacey Bradford approached Marion County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Miller with the idea of making the most accurate mapping data available to the two Marion County private ambulance services, Life Star Ambulance and Marion County EMS. Miller was surprised to learn the previous Supervisor had never offered 911 the opportunity to provide the two private ambulance services with the same software used by law enforcement and fire departments, especially considering their role as first responders. The benefit for the public will be the most accurate address information available, thereby insuring an ambulance will arrive at a location in the shortest amount of time possible, which could mean the difference between life and death. “The taxpayers pay for the GIS (Geographic Information System) and its updates through Marion County recording fees. My feeling is we should always be looking for new ways to utilize this system for the benefit of the citizens of Marion County” stated Supervisor Miller. As 911 Director Bradford explains, “We are excited to be able to now offer this state of the

All police and fire departments are already linked into this system and it only makes sense to allow these ambulance services the same opportunity.” Miller wholeheartedly agreed and explained, “Although these are private companies, they provide a valuable and often life-saving service to the citizens of Marion County.” Miller commented the new map from the recent flyover should be uploaded in the system by the end of September, which will fur ther enhance the

mapping. A key feature of the GIS versus other mapping options such as google, mapquest, etc. is the fact it is updated daily when the staff of the Assessment office input address changes, sales, name changes, etc., thereby giving the most accurate information to 911 who then disseminates this data to law enforcement, fire, ambulance, etc. through their system. Both Bradford and Miller are proud of the rel at i onsh ip c re ate d between these two departments in the short time since Miller was elected as Supervisor of Assessments. The previous agreement between the two agencies took 10 years; this one took just 45 days.

The Midland Area Agency would like to invite you to participate in an interactive exciting party. The program is called Take Charge of your Health, or better known as Live Well — Be Well. The course is a 6-week course to be held every Tuesday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Midland Area Agency on Aging, located at 434 South Poplar, Centralia, IL. It will begin on August 1 and will end on Sept. 5. The Live Well — Be Well classes are led by facilitators who have personal experience with ongoing

health conditions. Throughout the class you will learn and interact with others on how to eat healthy and improve your health condition. You will perhaps create an exercise program that will specifically work for you and then learn of ways to improve communications with family members, physicians and perhaps your healthcare providers. Each week, you will develop your own weekly goals to help manage whatever you are dealing with and then listen to other problem solving strategies to help you cope with pain,

fatigue and frustration. Class leaders concentrate on helping you gain support and encouragement, and they have found out that just by discussing and interacting with others, you are able to development solutions on how to live a better life and to be well. For those interested, please call the Midland Area Agency on Aging office at 618-532-1853 and ask for Judy. The classes will be held on the following days: August 1, August 8, August 15, August 22, August 29, September 5.

UPCOMING HUMMINGBIRD FESTIVAL The home of Bob and Donita Morris near Walnut Hill, Illinois will be the site for a Hummingbird Festival scheduled for Thursday, July 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dozens of hummingbirds should be present to "wow" festival visitors. Vernon Kleen, a licensed hummingbird bander and President of the Lincoln Land Ass o ciation of Bird Banders, will begin the festival with a short discussion about hummingbirds and explain why they are banded. After the discussion, hummingbirds will

be captured, banded and released. The festival is a family event and there is no admission charge. Visitors will be permitted to "adopt" birds; although there is no longer a fee for the adoptions, donations to the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders would be appreciated. Those who adopt a bird will receive an attractive signed certificate, may be able to release the bird they adopted, and will be notified if their bird is ever recaptured. If hummingbirds appeal to you, then plan on visit-

ing the Festival at the Morris home, 220 Medlin Road, Walnut Hill. It should be a very rewarding and entertaining experience. The Lincoln L and Ass o ciation of Bird Banders is a not-for-profit organization to perform sound scientific studies and educational services to monitor, protect and enhance the populations of Illinois' native birds and their unique environments. Donations of sugar are appreciated but not mandatory.

CRITICAL RED CROSS BLOOD SHORTAGE PROMPTS EMERGENCY CALL FOR DONATIONS The American Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types to give now and help save lives. Blood donations have fallen short of expectations for the past two months, resulting in about 61,000 fewer donations than needed and causing a significant draw down of the Red Cross blood supply. The shortfall is the equivalent of the Red Cross not collecting any blood donations for more than four days. “It’s crucial that people donate now to meet the needs of patients every day and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood,” said Joe Zydlo, External Communications Manager of the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region. “Every day, blood and platelet donors can help save lives, and right now these heroes are needed to give as soon as possible.” How to Help To schedule an appointment to donate, use the free Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross has added more than 25,000 additional appointment slots at donation centers and community blood drives across the country over the next

few weeks to accommod at e m o r e d o n o r s . Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce the time it takes to donate. Summer Months Lead to Shortage Blood shortages often worsen around Independence Day due to many fewer volunteerhosted blood drives at places of work, worship or community gathering, and this year is no exception. Nearly 700 fewer blood drives are scheduled during the Independence Day week than the weeks before and after the holiday. Overall, the summer months are among the most challenging times of the year for blood and platelet donations as regular donors delay giving while they vacation and participate in summer activities. In a recent survey of Red Cross blood donors, more than 73 percent indicated vacation plans this summer, many of them occurring the weeks before and after Independence Day. New donors and those who haven’t given in a while are especially encouraged to roll up a sleeve and help save lives. Nearly one-third fewer new blood donors came out to give last summer than during the rest of the year due in part to schools — where

blood drives are held and where new donors give – being out of session during the summer months. Every two seconds in the United States blood and platelets are needed to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant procedures, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect nearly 14,000 blood donations every day for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below.

Sad day in Illinois? It depends on how you look at it or which side you're on! As one state representative said, I voted yes because I care about the state's future. But first up, after a number of requests for who voted which way, as promised, read on. On Sunday, July 2 the Illinois State House of Representatives vote was 72 to 45 to approve the income tax hike. Listed below is a breakdown of how they voted. Democrats voting yes (57): Ammons, Andrade, Arroyo, Beiser, D. Burke, K. Burke, Cassidy, Chapa LaVia, Conroy, Conyears-Ervin, Crespo, Currie, D'Amico, Davis, DeLuca, Drury, Evans, Feigenholtz, Fine, Flowers, Ford, Gabel, Gordon-Booth, Greenwood, Guzzardi, Harper, G. Harris, Hernandez, Hoffman, Hurley, Jones, Kifowit, Lang, Lilly, Madigan, Mah, Martwick, C. Mitchell, Moeller, Nekritz, Phelps, Riley, Rita, Sente, Sims, Slaughter, Soto, Stratton, Tabares, Thapedi, Turner, Wallace, Walsh, Welch, Williams, Willis, Zalewski. Republicans voting yes (15): Andersson, Bryant, Cavaletto, Davidsmeyer, Fortner, Hammond, D. Harris, Hays, Jimenez, Meier, B. Mitchel l, Phi l lips, Pritchard, Reis, Unes. Democrats voting no (10): Connor, Costello, Halpin, Manley, Mayfield, Moylan, Mussman, Scherer, Stuart, Yingling. Republicans voting no (35): Batinick, Bellock, Bennett, Bourne, Brady, Breen, Butler, Cabello, Demmer, Durkin, Frese, Halbrook, Ives, Jesiel, Long, McAuliffe, McCombie, McDermed, McSweeney, Morrison, Olsen, Parkhurst, Reick, Sauer, Severin, S k i l l i c o r n , S o m m e r, Sosnowski, Spain, Stewart, Swanson, Wehrli, Welter, B. Wheeler, K. Wheeler. Republicans not voting (1): Winger (exc us ed absence). After Sunday's vote Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed the bill. What followed? Speaker Michael Madigan s cheduled a Thursday afternoon session after a number of attempts to get a quorum (which requires 60 representatives) to vote to override the Governor's veto of the bill which consisted of approximately $5 billion in

tax hikes. Madigan also delivered the following statement: "House Democrats look forward to working with our colleagues on the other side of the aisle to begin healing the wounds of the last several years." I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the only way in Springfield is Michael Madigan's way, and folks, that is the problem, even though the Governor urged the house not to undo his veto by saying, "This tax hike will solve none of our problems. In fact, it will make our problem worse, not better." So thanks to the reluctant Democrat lawmakers the original vote held, and the Governor's veto didn't hold. And the income tax increase passed, with absolutely NO reform thanks to the no common sense guy Michael Madigan. Below is a news release from State Rep. John Cavaletto after the Thursday vote. "Rep. Cavaletto Votes to Oppose a 32% Permanent Tax Increase on Families" State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem), a member of the Cost Benefit Analysis Committee, today voted to supp or t the Governor’s veto of the budget plan that raises the state income tax rate from 3.75% to 4.95%. “My vote on Sunday for the proposal in front of us was based on the ‘junk bond’ rating threat to the State of Illinois and that huge negative impact on borrowing and the cost to Illinois taxpayers,” said Rep. Cavaletto. “But I found out this morning directly from Moody’s that this budget plan doesn’t seem to help and they are still considering a downgrade from Baa3 rating level because Illinois’ debt obligations does not have stable funding to meet our obligations, even with this tax increase,” Cavaletto continued. “The more than one thousand calls, emails and Facebook messages I have received have been about 10 to 1 opposed to any more taxes. The message from my constituents has been loud and clear that they do not want a tax increase so I had to oppose this plan with a permanent tax increase,” Cavaletto said. As part of this plan there is a 5% across the board cut of state agencies and a 10%

cut in the funding to Illinois colleges and universities. But there are not enough reforms to change the way government spending is handled in Illinois. “We’re pushing people out of this state with high taxes and property taxes and we need reforms and tax relief to keep people here and attract more with job growth,” Cavaletto concluded. *** Below is a news release f rom St ate S en. Ky le McCarter. "McCarter: House Passes Punishing Tax Increase" State Sen. Kyle McCarter said he’s not surprised by the passage of a punishing tax increase because that’s the only way the Illinois General Assembly can keep up with its insatiable appetite for spending. “They want big government; and they want the citizens of Illinois to pay for it, even though Illinois’ fiscal problems are not the fault of the citizens,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “The ones at fault are the legislatures of the past that have failed to live within their means.” *** Sen. McCarter said he expects Illinois taxpayers to respond like they did after the 2011 state income tax hike. In the immediate years following that increase, 200,000 taxpayers left Illinois for opportunities in other states. He said the only way to save Illinois is for government to learn to live within its means; or more accurately, learn to live within the taxpayers’ means. On Tuesday, July 4 the Illinois Senate voted 36-18 to approve the income tax hike. A breakdown of how they voted will be published next week. In conclusion, it should be abundantly clear to everyone no matter what compromise Rauner is willing to make Micheal Madigan will not agree to any deal that includes actual reform. Springfield needs to be shaken up! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. to the fact that film for them is impossible to find. According to several price guides I consulted, Polaroid cameras seem to be selling in the $10 to $20 range. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions. For example, collectors generally focus on the 110 series, the 180 and 195. The SX-70 foldable cameras are selling

CREATING A BUTTERFLY OASIS There are approximately 2,000 species of butterflies and moths native to Illinois, and creating a butterfly oasis can bring them to your backyard. “One of the things to remember when creating a butterfly oasis is to provide both nectar sources for butterflies and larval food sources for c a t e r p i l l a r s ,” s a y s University Extension horticulture educator Kari Houle. In addition to provid-

ing food sources, Houle says that planning a butterfly oasis requires careful plant and fixture selection for the garden. “Plan for continuous season-long blooms, provide resting spaces, minimize pesticide use, and be willing to accept some plant damage due to larval feeding. Choose a sunny location that is protected from wind,” she says. Gardeners should also provide opportunities for

“puddling,” when male butterflies visit mud puddles for water and minerals. “Mimic mud puddles in your garden by providing a tray with wet sand and some sticks and rocks for the butterflies to land on,” Houle says. “Make sure to check the puddling tray regularly to ensure the sand hasn’t dried out.” It’s a good idea to include large flat stones or other landing surfaces in the sun so that cold-

blooded butterflies can bask and collect heat from the sun. When planning the butterfly oasis, use large masses of color instead of small color pockets because butterflies are short-sighted. Consider the flowers’ colors when choosing plants. Butterflies prefer red, pink, or purple flowers, but they will also visit other colored flowers. “One of the other important parts of successfully creating a butterfly oasis is to minimize pesticide usage,” says Houle.

“Since we want to encourage both butterflies and caterpillars, many insecticides can be harmful to on e or t h e ot h e r. Understand that a certain level of plant damage is necessary. Break out of the normal mindset of trying to prevent plant damage from insect feeding and allow it in your butterfly oasis.” If you do have insect damage requiring attention, spot treating the issue instead of using broad-spectrum insecticides has multiple benefits. “Reducing insecticide

use in the garden can have the added benefit of allowing the increase of beneficial insects and natural predators,” Houle says. “My summer goal is to start a butterfly oasis in my backyard,” Houle says. “Will you join me?” University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

A Message from Hell My sister and brotherin-law have been to Hell and back. To escape some of the frigid cold and snow of the North Dakota winter, they took a luxury cruise to the Cayman Islands. In the Grand Cayman British West Indies they visited a small village called Hell. My sister sent me a postcard with the postmark of Hell and wrote me a message from Hell, “We’ve been to Hell. It is hot here so we are coming back.” Fortunately my sister and brother-in-law had a round trip ticket back home to North Dakota. The word of God reveals that there is a real hell and those who travel there have a one-way ticket with no hope of returning. Jesus referenced and taught much on the reality of hell. “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be

fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son remember that in your life time you received your good things and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and

you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said, ‘No . . . If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead’” (Luke 16:19-31 NLJV). Jesus gave us a message from hell via the rich man, “It’s hot here. Don’t come here! It’s terrifying, terrible, and the torment of flames is forever.” The good news is that paradise — heaven — awaits those who will believe and receive God’s provision of salvation through Christ’s redemption on the cross. Lazarus the beggar received the riches of God’s grace. The penitent thief on the cross next to Jesus had Christ’s promise, “I assure you, today you will be with me in para-

dise” (Luke 23:43 NLT). Some erroneously ask how a God of love could send anyone to hell. But God in love has provided the way to heaven and everlasting life. Man must choose or reject the only means to life. Scriptures teach that “The Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9). The rich man was selfish, self-centered, and lived for only this life. Lazarus was shown into the joys of everlasting life in heaven. The choices we make today will determine our eternal destiny. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Soldier's Transfer May Strand Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My wife recently received orders to transfer to a new duty station in Germany. I'm excited to go with her, but the problem is that we can't take our two cats. I don't want to give them up to a shelter, and I've asked relatives nearby if they can take them, but they can't. What can I do? — Proud Army Spouse in Maryland DEAR ARMY SPOUSE: Is there a health reason why you can't bring along the cats? From my research, pets are allowed to accompany military families to Germany when transferring to a new assignment, or what's known as a permanent change of station (PCS). The article "PCS and Your Pet" in military.com

13

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

explains many of the details involved in moving to an overseas base with your pet. If your cats are too sick or old to handle the trip, then you should look at finding them a new home. However, if they're healthy, several resources are available to help you plan and bring them along. Get a certificate of health from your veterinarian as soon as possible to avoid any problems with bringing them to a new country. Coordinate with the military offices that handle the details of PCS — you likely must contact several — to make travel arrangements for you, your wife and the cats. Find out if more documentation is needed for the cats. You may need to pay for the cats' transportation, and you'll have to buy airline-rated pet carriers. Contact the agency helping you complete the move to Germany. Also contact the base veterinarian, who may have additional advice in helping you and your cats move smoothly overseas. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
