Chairman of Balloon Fest 2017 Balloon Fest and it is with great pleasure that I have D.J. Justice and Marcus Holland serving on the Executive Committee with me. Balloon Fest is under the direction of the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce of which Marcus Holland is the new Executive Director. Marcus Holland

Executive Director The Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce

Balloon Fest takes a lot of planning and support from our community. It is the largest event in Centralia and one of the largest events in Southern

Illinois with approximately 40,000 people attending Balloon Fest each year! The planning of Balloon Fest begins in the Chamber office, with the hard work and dedication of Carol Flanigan. She has been instrumental in organizing the event since the ver y f irst C entralia Balloon Fest. This year’s Balloon Fest chairman is Patty Williams. This is her third time leading the executive and steering committees.

Wednesday, August 16, 2017

Executive Committee leads approximately 20 committees, and these committees are the heart of everything that happens for the three day event. Many thanks to the steering committee and the hundreds of volunteers who make this event possible. Many beautiful balloons will take to the sky, with the Elvis Balloon shaking things up, and Scuba, a large yellow diver, floating across the majestic Foundation Park. Opening the event will be the Centralia High School Marching Showcase and

Chorus. There will be four balloon races and two balloon glows. Our main stage entertainment includes the Invaders 2.0 followed by an amazing fireworks display on Friday and Blue Suede Crew on Saturday. Each day the family picnic tent will have entertainment all day, and on Saturday an Elvis impersonator contest will be held. I’m sure there will be a whole lot of shakin’ going on. The children’s area (including Little Obie and Little Toot), craft fair, food vendors, cars shows (including the #88

Nationwide Chevrolet SS Showcar), and boat races are sure to keep everyone busy. Over the last 28 years Balloon Fest has grown and the number of visitors to our town and Foundation Park has soared. We are hoping the winds will welcome us because this could be the biggest ever with people from far and wide visiting southern Illinois to witness the solar eclipse on August 21. We welcome all of you to a magical event where many friendships have been made over the years and continue as

we join together for yet another year. I hope you can join us in what is sure to be a fantastic weekend of fun and laughter. Thank you to the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce, the major sponsors, balloon sponsors, other sponsors and contributors, and the hundreds of volunteers who have dedicated so much time and energy to make your weekend special. “May the winds welcome you with softness.”

She is a wealth of knowledge and guidance. The first vice chair is D. J. Justice, who will be chairman in 2018. The second vice chair is me, so I will be chairman in 2019. Yes, it is planned that far in advance! There are 23 separate committees that make up the Balloon Fest steering committee. Each committee is in charge of one part of the event (children’s games, craft vendors, food vendors, etc.). If you see a member of the steering committee in the park, please thank them. They give a lot of time and are greatly appreciated.

Then the separate committees recruit volunteers to help through the weekend. The volunteers are individuals, businesses, church groups, civic organizations, and school sports teams. We rely on 600 volunteers to give a few hours and make this event a reality. Let’s not forget what it is all about—the balloons! This year, we will have 36 balloons, each with their own pilot, crew, and sponsors. There are scheduled flights, races, balloon glows, and tethered rides throughout the weekend. Lastly, I have to thank our major sponsors:

Borowiak’s IGA, City of Centralia, Elks Lodge #493, Homefield Energy, Ir v in-Macz Funera l Homes, Midland States Bank, Monken Auto, NOTS Logistics, Pepsi Mid-America, Quantum Vision Centers, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hosptial, SSM Health St. Mary’s Medical Staff, Subway, Walmart, and Wither’s Broadcasting Company. Without the generosity of Balloon Fest sponsors, this event would not be possible. It is amazing that all of this planning and hard work is pulled together for one weekend for the past

28 years! Please join us this year at the 28th Annual Centralia Balloon Fest in Foundation Park. The schedule of events are online, www.centraliaballoonfest.com, or follow us on Facebook for updates, www.facebook. com/centraliaballoonfest.

Friday, Aug. 18 • 8:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Main Stage

he Invaders began playing music together in 1967 while the members were students at Saleam (Illinois) Community High School. The “original six” — Tom Champion, Rick Chapman, John Gaston, Steve Mulvany, Don Nesmith and Bob Turnage — played teen centers, night clubs, and high school and college dances throughout southern Illinois during their high school years, with several band members continuing

to play music throughout the tri-state area during college. The band broke up in the early 1970s due to work and family responsibilities. In 1990 the band reunited for the 20-year reunion of the SCHS Class of 1970 and had so much fun they decided to stay together, playing conventions, dances, festivals and similar events throughout southern Illinois for another five years before once again hanging up their instruments. After a

ten-year hiatus, the band reunited in 2005 at the urging of a terminally ill friend, Linda Lance-Mobley, and has remained together since, playing numerous events in the area in addition to two cruise ship tours — the most recent in 2012 when over 200 friends and fans joined the band for eight days and two concerts in the Caribbean. The Invaders began to morph into “Invaders 2.0” in 2013 when the six originals were joined by

nine musicians and seven vocalists for a fundraisershow for the Salem Community Theatre. The show sold out quickly and was a tremendous success, with a long wait-list for additional tickets, so the band held a second show two weeks later and sold the theatre out once again. In August 2013 they brought the same show to the Centralia Cultural Society for two nights, and to Mt. Vernon’s Granada Theatre for one night. Noting the critical

and fundraising success of the shows, and the increased versatility the additional musicians and vocalists brought to the band, the Invaders entered the next phase of their musical evolution by officially adding nine new members and becoming “Invaders 2.0”. Invaders 2.0 currently includes the talents Bob Turnage, Marla Salvati and Dottie Register on vocals; Brian Gansauer, Rick Chapman and Steve Mulvany on guitar; Don

Saturday, Aug. 19 • 8:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Main Stage

ake a musical journey with Scott Wattles and the Blue Suede Crew and relive some of the greatest music in Rock 'n' Roll history. Roll up your sleeves and grease back your hair as the Blue Suede Crew pays tribute to the early era of Rock 'n' Roll Music. You'll be dancing in the aisle when you hear the music of such artists as Bill Haley, Danny & the Juniors, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and even the King himself, Elvis Presley. But wait! It only gets better as

O J EN

the Crew launches into a special tribute to the music of the Beatles, the incredible Beach Boys, Mr. Elton John, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, CCR and many others. With a variety packed show that appeals to all ages, Scott Wattles and the Blue Suede Crew can take your entertainment experience to the next level. The Blue Suede Crew stepped out in faith and created a special Gospel show as part of their repertoire in 2007. When asked about the

stumbling blocks the group has had to overcome since adding this special portion to their shows, Scott replies, "We've been given an opportunity — a gift from God — and nothing compares to being used by God in whatever capacity he chooses for you. We have used our faith to ride the ups and downs." Scott continues, "Doing this Gospel tribute has been an integral part of who we are now as a band. It's an amazing feeling to know the music you are singing not only has a resounding

impact on the audience but also on us as performers. We are honored that God would call us and it is our belief this music will appeal to all ages and walks of life. It is our hope we might bring our audience closer

to God through such heartwarming music but most importantly, it is our goal to bring people together to praise our Lord and Savior." That kind of dedication and heart for service is not the most common attitude

found in tribute bands and is one that sets The Blue Suede Crew apart from the pack. Don't miss this special act on the main stage at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night at Centralia Balloon Fest.

ravis Trone says he had his first guitar at age 4 but never had anyone to give him lessons. When he was 16 his parents bought a computer and he was able to teach himself how to play the guitar by using the internet. Travis went on to form his first band at the age of 21 and performed in Cape Girardeau at small venues while attending Southeast Missouri State University. He began a second band at age 25, but developed a severe throat infection and suffered from pharyngitis. He wasn't able to sing for over a year and was hardly able to speak for a few weeks. After this setback he went to work at the Centralia Correctional Center on the 3 to 11 shift for three-and-a-half years during which he almost gave up on music. But when he finally gained enough seniority in August of 2015 to hold a day shift he decided to give music another shot because he loved performing. Travis says, "That was one of the best decisions I ever made." Travis currently performs weekly, playing a variety of classic rock, alternative rock and country

music. He has played all over Southern Illinois and his fan base is growing. Travis said he has received private vocal lessons from Melodic Rhythms Music School in Belleville, Illinois and it has helped him tremendously. He recently joined a four piece band as the lead singer and looks forward to doing shows this fall. Travis turned 34 in June and resides in Centralia, Illinois with his wife and two children.

he Haneys are not just another Southern Ill i n oi s S out h e r n Gospel singing group. The Haneys work extremely hard to be a blessing to those to which they minister, and always consider each opportunity a blessing for them to worship and fellowship as well. The Haneys are made up of Bob Haney, Lara Haney Morris, both of Salem, and Berdella McGrew from Flora. The trio ministers through southern gospel music, including old classics, some newer arrangements, original material, and often include some of the hymns of the church. They have adapted material that they do to insure a tightly blended harmony in order to produce the Haneys’ Sound, a distinctive style that is uniquely their own. Most gospel music lovers would say The Haneys are known for the

power they put behind a song. Bob Haney, spokesperson for the trio states, "The lyrics of the songs are the inspiration of songwriters expressing a story about the Gospel or the effects of the Gospel on someone’s life. We feel that it is our job as singers to convey that message to the audience to the best of our ability." The Haneys have had the privilege of opening for The Dixie Melody Boys,

The Lesters, The Pfeifers, Three Bridges, The Galloways, The Whisnants, Naomi and the Segos, Kevin Spencer and Friends, and The Florida Boys. They have also sung with Young Harmony, Karen Peck and New River, The Nelons, and Kirk Talley. Their influences are the Hoppers, Pfeifers, Martins, Gaithers, Singing Americans, and James Rainey, For booking information, phone 618-548-1276, or 618-780-4631.

Dave Shake "Shakey Dave"

PARKING MAP

ave Shake is better known by his fans as “Sha ke y D ave.” Though he has many interests, he says his first love is “entertaining folks like you with ‘Down Home’ Classic Country Music.” Through the use of modern electronics he performs as a solo act around the Southern Illinois communities across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. His favorite songs are those recorded by folks like Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. He also likes

current artists like George Strait and Alan Jackson and says old style country music is his real strength. The first-born son of Ken and Doris Shake, Dave was born on August 18, 1944, in a small copper mining town called Ray, Arizona. His father was, at the time, on active duty with the Army Air Corps in New Caledonia, and his mother was residing with his paternal grandparents. Upon his father’s discharge from the AAF, Ken Shake moved the family to Prescott, AZ, known as the “Cowboy

Capital of the World” and the home of the world’s first organized rodeo. Dave grew up steeped in western lore and country music. He lived in the place most folks only read about in western novels or see in the movies. He says it was a magical beginning. After graduation from Prescott High School, Dave attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ for two years. He decided that working his way through college was too tough, so he quit school and got a job. He worked in several oc-

cupations ranging from the U.S. Forest Service to a Doodlebugging crew in seismic oil exploration until he got his notice to appear for the draft. In 1965 the country was really building up for the Vietnam War. In

September, 1965 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, beginning a very satisfying career that would last 30+ years and allow him to travel worldwide and experience cultures that many others may never see. He

LANDOWNER AWARDS August 18•19•20 Balloon Fest 2017 will award $100 Schnucks gift cards to five lucky landowners whose names are drawn at random at the conclusion of the Balloon Fest. Only landowners whose property is used for random landings by balloonists participating in Balloon Fest 2017 will be eligible. If you wish balloonists to land on your property, remember that a white sheet on your property is a universal welcome sign for balloonists. • Balloons usually fly in the early mornings and late afternoons, and seldom exceed a 10 – 12 mile radius of lift-off sites. • Balloon flight patterns are controlled by wind directions. • Pilots look for open land or roads for landing sites, avoiding crop and livestock areas. • Spectators are urged to respect the rights of landowners when following balloons in flight and landing areas, and to avoid tying up traffic. We appreciate the enthusiasm area rural landowners have shown in the past and want to thank them again for their support. With continued support we can make Balloon Fest 2017 problem free, fun-filled, and entertaining for the entire family.

Balloon Fest 2017 Entertainment Elvis Tribute Artist

Alan Dale Ross

F

Sunday, Aug. 20 • 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. Family Picnic Tent

or me the Elvis experience started a long time ago. I can remember back to 2nd grade at Washington Grade School in Centralia IL. During a classroom talent show I sang along with a 45 record to the song "Return to Sender." I was pretty well hooked on music after that. I remember growing up going to the drive-ins in Centralia, Sandoval and Salem and the downtown theatre in Centralia; like all the young kids in the area, we went most weekends. It was a great time back then. I pretty well saw all of the Elvis movies and still

watch them today. Fast forward to today. I played in a couple of bands and eventually started my karaoke show of DJ ALAN D a n d h i s J U K E B OX KARAOKE, after retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, opening every show with an Elvis song. Kinda my trademark opening. A couple of years ago I was asked to do a Halloween party out at The Roundhouse Wine Co. in Centralia IL and was trying to decide what costume I would wear that evening. Well, you can probably guess what I went with, an Elvis jumpsuit. I found one I liked

at a costume shop in Houston TX while there visiting my brother. That show was a huge success and I started getting asked to perform as Elvis at private parties and nursing homes in the area. I then thought I would take it to the next level and try my hand at some of the competitions around the country for Elvis Tribute Artists. The first one was The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest at the 15th Annual Tupelo Elvis Festival in Tupelo MS where Elvis was born. This contest is actually sanctioned by EPE (Elvis Presley Enterprises) of

Memphis TN. You had to submit a video, photo, and a short bio to a selection committee. There I was notified that I was selected to compete at that festival. I did not win anything there but I did get some good experience and met a lot of great people. I put on the show at the St. Mary's

Autumn Fest a few years ago with a combination of some of my best karaoke singers and several tribute artists also. From there I tried my next competition with The Elvis Extravaganza at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis IN. There I qualified for the finals at the National

Elvis Extravaganza Finals in Tampa FL at the Florida State Fair. I enjoy singing and getting the chance to travel the country doing it. I would like to thank all my fans and especially my wife, Rose Ross, for putting up with me. Thank ya, Thank ya very much.

he Presswoods, consisting of Alan Presswood and his son Ian, will be performing at Balloon Fest 2017 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. under the Picnic Tent on Sunday, August 20, 2017. The Presswood family has a long and distinguished history as musicians in the area going all the way back to the 1960s when Alan and his older brothers, Mel and Gary, were part of the band known as the Knight Beats. They were a well-known group that won the State Tournament for bands in that era and featured the talents of many musicians over the years. Later the brothers played together for many years throughout the 70s and 80s as the

Presswood Brothers. Carr ying on that strong musical family tradition is Ian Presswood of Centralia, a talented singer with a wide range of vocal talent who advanced up to the third round of the popular television show American Idol several years ago. It

is said that Ian can sing anything! The Presswoods perform often in the St. Louis and Mt. Vernon areas. Their act features a broad range of music interests — anything f rom C ountr y and Top-40, to Rap and MoTown.
