In the news: • Last weekend was a bad time for America in Charlottesville, Virginia • President Donald Trump draws a red line First up, Charlottesville, Virginia was a sad time for all, leaving one dead, nineteen hurt, and two state troopers killed in a freak helicopter crash as they were surveilling the thousands of protesters. This protest started because of plans to remove a confederate statue of Robert E. Lee, and it got out of hand. The home of founding father Thomas Jefferson was rocked to the core while the violence and hate continued throughout the weekend. Sadly, this behavior is happening in the United States all too often, from college campuses to the streets of New York. Instead of talking and addressing the problem, pure hate prevails. I personally (loud and clear) condemn the white national supremacists, which includes the Ku Klux Klan and Neo Nazis who organized the protest. It was reported that the protest originally drew approximately 50 Klan members that were met by several hundreds of counter-protesters shouting, "Racists, go home." And from there the tension grew. In the end, one person was killed and nineteen injured as an individual drove a car into the crowd. President Trump said he condemns "hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides" in Charlottesville. He continued on to say, "It’s been going on for a long time in our country . . . It has no place in America." Melanie Trump had the following to say, "Our countr y encourages freedom of speech, but let's communicate without hate in our

hearts. No good comes from violence." On to North Korea. To start with, you can blame Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter for North Korea's ability. North Korea couldn't have done it without their help. In 1994 Clinton prepared to confront North Korea over CIA reports it had built nuclear warheads and their threat to "engulf Japan and South Korea into a sea of fire." Enter self-appointed p e a c e ma ke r Ji m my Carter who went to Pyongyang and negotiated a sellout deal that gave North Korea two new reactors and five billion dollars in aid in return for a promise to quit seeking nukes, all during the presidency of none other than Bill Clinton. Well, we can all see how well that worked. The fact is, Carter and Clinton own North Korea, the Bushes own Iraq, and Barack Obama owns Iran (shades of North Korea). So what's happening in North Korea t=oday is the same thing that's been happening under our previous leadership. The only difference is Donald Trump isn't having any part of it. Unlike Obama, the king of red lines, Trump drew one, and he means what he says and says what he means, despite the groups in this country that haven't given him a chance. But let's keep in mind, in my opinion, this is not just a U.S. problem; this is a world problem. North Korea is a dangerous threat to everyone ruled — it appears — by a true nut case. Secretary of Defense Gen. James "Mad Dog" Mattis said it best last week, "The DPRK (Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea) should cease any consideration of any actions that would lead to the end of its

regime and destruction of its people." Meanwhile the supreme ruler of North Korea continues his rhetoric, by coming back at Trump and Mattis, warning they're talking "a lot of nonsense." I realize this whole thing can get out of control fast. But I also understand we as a country cannot continue to allow threats of action against a U.S. territory — in this case Guam. So finally — although some won't agree — we have a president that will stand up for America. It's been said we are locked and loaded, and I say it's about damn time. Will it lead to war? I say no, nobody wants that, but nor do most countries want the North Korean leader going rogue on the rest of the world. I rarely agree with Lindsey Graham, but on his latest statement supporting Trump 100 percent, he said, "Over the last 20 years it's been the same." If you act the same, if you talk the same, you are going to get the same." On a closing note, according to China's state media, on Friday they reported that the Chinese government said it would remain neutral if North Korea attacked the U.S., but warned it would defend its Asian neighbor if the U.S. strikes first and tries to overthrow Kim Jon-Un's regime. But in the meantime, the other Asia-Pacific countries came out in support of the United States. At press time it was reported that China was cutting off some imports from North Korea. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. the score? Imagine watching four quarters of a football game, seeing seven touchdowns but when your friend asks the score you say "not a clue" every time. Or check in on the baseball game and just let random people in the stands judge whether or not runs should count that day. It was Malignaggi's take on Conor McGregor that got the boxing world laughing along with him. His analogy was that golfers don't suddenly become hockey players because a driver looks similar to a hockey stick. While that knock earned him an invite

to spar with McGregor leading up to the fight, the analogy doesn't quite work. People like to talk about the "death of boxing" and always compare the "sweet science" to mixed martial arts, but it doesn't have to be so. They can co-exist, and to say that McGregor isn't a fighter is absolutely absurd. But as we saw from watching Ronda Rousey try to outbox a boxer and lose badly, and knowing enough about Floyd Mayweather's wor l d - c l a s s d e fe ns e , McGregor is still a massive underdog with a puncher's chance. Even if he wins, it doesn't mean that boxing is

a lesser sport, it just means that Mayweather lost a fight. We're getting closer to finding out the answers, but boxing will, no matter the outcome, still have plenty to answer for. It's time to fix the scoring system or else these payper-view spectacles are going to be a thing of the past, and that's something we'd all regret. As McGregor said, "We're all getting fed here." At the end of the day it's a job, and boxing still has more work to do. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

RIBBON CUTTING FOR UPDATED MURRAY CENTER DENTAL CLINIC

A ribbon cutting for the updated dental clinic at Murray Center was held recently. There has always been a dental clinic at Murray Center, but over the years the equipment has not been replaced and the chairs that were being used were frequently breaking. So the Murray Parents' Association, along with others have been working to redo the clinic. Murray Center Parents Association President Rita Winkeler said, "The updating of this dental clinic has been

a dream of mine for several years. Almost a year ago today I was contacted by Kelly Meyer, our dental hygienist, and Angel Lance, our dental assistant asking for advice on how to get new dental chairs. A year ago we had one old and outdated dental chair, and it frequently quit working when a Murray individual was in the middle of a procedure. This caused a lot of grief and upset the individuals." Winkeler told Meyer and Lance to start looking for new

dental chairs, and that the Murray Parents Association would pay for them. Winkeler said, "Angel and Kelly spent many hours searching for just the right dental chairs, and they did this during their free time, in the evening, and during the weekends. They were the driving force behind getting this done." In S eptember 2016, Murray Center resident Marsha Mahlandt passed away, and her family asked if there was a way to honor Marsha and help Murray Center. Winkeler said, "I immediately thought of the dental clinic, and thanks to their generosity, we now have these two new dental chairs." The Friends for Murray Center group also contributed towards the purchase of the chairs, as did the Murray Pa re nt s’ As s o c i at i o n . Winkeler expressed gratitude to the Friends for Murray Center who have continued to support the individuals of Murray Center. The MPA also sold tee shirts to help purchase a new dental cart. The cart they had was made in 1934. The rooms were also

totally repainted and designed to be more “user friendly.” Winkeler said, "What makes this ribbon cutting so special is that we all saw a need, and working together we did it. The state of Illinois is in dire financial straits, and working together we were able to get this done without any state funding. It shows me how important Murray is to so many people, especially our loved ones who live here. During a recent meeting, Director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities Greg Fenton asked if the clinic could also be used for developmentally disabled individuals living in the community who need dental care desperately. Director Fenton, SODC Director Tiffany Bailey, Assistant Deputy Director Region 2 John Absher, and Murray Center Director Mary Ann Smith are currently working together to make this a reality. Winkeler said, "Besides our own individuals benefiting, we hope that many other needy individuals in the years to come may benefit from the generosity of the Mahlandts and others."

BALLOON FEST 2017 MAJOR SPONSORS Every year the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Balloon Fest Committee members work hard to bring Balloon Fest to our community, but they can’t do it alone. Along with all the hard work that comes with organizing an event of this size, someone has to step up to the plate and donate products, services, and money to support it. Some donors sponsor balloons, balloon pilots, or specific activities; some make small monetary donations; others make very large donations. It all adds

up, but the sponsors are critical to the success of the event. Pictured here are some of the major sponsors of Balloon Fest 2017. Be sure to thank them for their contribution to this year’s edition of the annual funfilled family-oriented festival we know as Balloon Fest. It’s simply amazing the length that God would go to reconcile a lost world to himself, that he would give his only begotten Son. (John 3:1 6) Amazing grace is the theme of the entire Bible. Consider the word “AMAZING.” What does it mean? Amazing means “to be filled with wonder, astonishment, surprise, or dumbfounded.” Even the angels look with amazement at God’s plan for salvation. (I Peter 1:12) In the gospel of Mark the 6th chapter, we see and hear some amazing things. AN AMAZED PEOPLE. “Jesus left there and went to his hometown . . . He began to teach in the synagogue and many who heard him were amazed.” (Mark 6:1) How tragic if you have no sense of wonder and amazement at the things of God. They were amazed at what Jesus taught. “He taught as one having authority.” They were amazed at his wisdom. They were in awe of Jesus’ many miracles. For He healed the sick, the blind, deaf, and crippled. He cast out evil spirits and raised the dead. The religious leaders were amazed because they considered Jesus an ordinary carpenter from their hometown. Where did he get his learning and wisdom? (Mark 6:1-3)

AN AMAZING JESUS. The Jewish leaders were offended at Jesus. They didn’t realize that he was more than a carpenter. “Jesus said to them, ‘Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.’” (Mark 6:4) This amazing Jesus is prophet, priest, and king. He fulfilled numerous prophetic scriptures and arose from the dead on the third day just as he said he would. “And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” (Matthew 11:5-6) AN AMAZING STATEMENT. Does anything amaze God? After all, he knows all and has seen it all. But the life of Jesus reveals that at least two things amaze the Lord: great faith or the lack thereof. Listen to this amazing statement, “He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed because of their lack of faith.” (Mark 6:5-6) What an amazing truth. The Lord God is limited in what he does by lack of faith. A friend posted this on Facebook. “Faith unlocks the door. You can’t get a miracle from God, you don’t believe in.” In contrast, Jesus was amazed at the Greek woman who believed him to deliver her daughter from a demon. (Matthew

11:5-6) A Centurion came to Jesus to get healing for his servant. “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, ‘Truly, I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.’” (Matthew 8:5-13) Do you want to please God? Have faith. (Hebrews 11:6) AN AMAZING MISSION. Jesus sent his disciples out on a training mission. (Mark 6: 7-13) They were to take no provisions but to rely on God to meet their needs. They were to heal the sick, cast out demons and preach the gospel of the kingdom — and call for repentance. All believers have been given an amazing mission. (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 6:15-18) A post on Facebook showed a lighthouse with the caption — “Don’t forget that maybe you are the lighthouse on someone else’s storm.” On another occasion Jesus sent out 70 disciples. They came back rejoicing that demons were subject to them in Jesus’ name. Jesus replied, “Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:17-20) Have you experienced the amazing grace of our amazing Lord and Savior? “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son. That whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) That’s simply amazing. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

BLOOD DONATIONS URGENTLY NEEDED IN THE FINAL WEEKS OF SUMMER The American Red Cross urges blood donors to give in the final weeks of summer to help overcome a chronic summer blood shortage. In August, regular donors may delay giving as final summer vacations are planned and back-toschool activities ramp up. To fully meet the needs of hospital patients in the coming days and weeks, donations are urgently needed from new and current donors. Those who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate again. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days, and Power Red cells can be donated every 112 days. As a special thank you, those who come out to give blood or platelets with the Red Cross now through Aug. 31 will be emailed a $5 Target eGiftCard™.* Appointments can be scheduled by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1800-733-2767). To help reduce wait times, donors are encouraged to make appointments and com-

plete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at redcrossblood.org/ RapidPass. The Red Cross relies on community partners to help ensure a sufficient blood supply for patients. About 80 percent of blood donations made to the Red Cross are through blood drives set up by community organizations, groups and businesses. Many of these businesses host blood drives throughout the year, encouraging their employees and customers to donate during the challenging times. Some businesses also provide employee volunteers in support of the Red Cross Blood Services and support public awareness advertising campaigns to educate people about the constant need for blood and platelet donations. To become a community partner by hosting a Red Cross blood drive, visit redcrossblood.org for more information. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below. Clinton County:

• It was aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart who made the following sage observation: "Never interrupt someone doing what you said couldn't be done." • You might be surprised to learn that famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wanted to marry the notorious Marie Antoinette. Of course, at the time he stated this desire, he was 6 years old and she was 7. • It's possible that you've never tried to imagine a baby bat nursing — though, as mammals, they certainly do. Now that you are imagining it, here's a hint: The babies have to nuzzle into mom's armpit (wingpit?) to get to the milk. *** Thought for the Day: It has been said that a pretty face is a passport, but it's not. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Relationships continue to thrive, but watch for any telltale signs of potential problems. Take needed action now to set things straight before they become troublesome later. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your powers of persuasion, backed up, of course, by your considerable expertise, help you establish your case even to the most dubious decision-makers in your workplace. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might still be a bit reluctant to face up to some less-than-pleasant realities. But the sooner you accept the facts, the sooner you can set about making some needed changes. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Expect to make adjustments, even when things seem locked up and ready to go. But cheer up: At least one change could lead to something you’ve been hoping for. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The success of a recent project should do a lot to boost your self-confidence. You might want to start now to check out ways to make that long-deferred bigger and bolder move. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Ease up on the pressure you might be putting on the new person in your life. It takes time for a budding relationship to blossom. Show more patience and understanding. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You have lots of inner strength in reserve. Use some of it to resist

intimidation from those who might try to impose on your good nature for their own reasons. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The good news is that your onthe-job status is improving. The one cautionary note, however, involves a personal situation you might have been ignoring for too long. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Congratulations. Once again, your sharp Sagittarian “horse sense” helps you work through a complicated situation that would leave most people confused. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Plan on indulging yourself in some well-earned good times through much of the week. Then be prepared to face some thought-provoking issues by the 19th. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Positive factors continue to dominate following a recent change in both your professional and personal lives. Expect to make contact with someone from your past. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Workplace stability allows you to continue making progress on your projects. But don’t ignore your personal life. Spend more quality time with those special folks. RECYCLE CENTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Cooking With Lizzie

End Of Summer Preserves I love the Amish. We all could learn so much from them. They work hard, rely on their faith, and don't clutter their lives. Their base is God, family and community. Usually the women spend their time right after school starts in the fall finishing up the last of their preserving for winter. Below are some of my favorite Amish recipes, starting with very special strawberry preserves.

Very Special Strawberry Preserves

1½ pounds perfect strawberries (1 rounded quart)

Pinch of salt 3 cups sugar

Wash and clean berries, removing any hard and yellow ends. Place in large, deep, heavy kettle, add 1 cup sugar, and stir gently to mix. Cook over low heat and bring to boil, stirring now and then, until syrup forms. This will take about 10 minutes. Gradually raise heat to medium-high so jam comes to rolling boil and sugar dissolves completely. Cook 5 minutes; skim off foam and discard. Add second cup of sugar and boil another 5 minutes. Stir in third cup, insert candy thermometer, and cook until 220°F. is reached. Pour into shallow heatproof 9x6-inch dish. Skim one more time; do not stir again after this. Cover dish with tea towel and allow to stand overnight, unrefrigerated. The next morning, ladle cold jam into 2 half-pint freezer jars, label, and freeze. Thaw and bring to room temperature before serving.

Bread And Butter Pickles

25 slender medium cucumbers 10 medium onions, as big around as the cucumbers 1/2 cup coarse salt 2 cups cider vinegar 2 cups sugar

1 cup water 2 tsp. mustard seed 2 tsp. celery seed 1/2 tsp. turmeric 1/2 tsp. ground cloves

Cut cucumbers and onions into thick slices. Place them in deep pans in layers, sprinkling each layer with the salt. Allow to stand 2 to 3 hours. Drain. In another deep pan, mix remaining ingredients and bring to boil over high heat. Add cucumber-onion mixture and bring to boil; cook 5 minutes over medium heat. Transfer hot to 10 hot pint jars. Cover and process 10 minutes in hot-water bath, counting time from when water comes again to boil after jars have been totally immersed. NOTE: If you can't find unwaxed cucumbers, substitute 30 Kirby cucumbers.

Crockpot Apple Butter

7 cups applesauce, preferably homemade, or good-quality commercial brand (unsweetened) can be substituted 2 cups apple cider

The Keep Centralia Beautiful / Clean and Green Recycling Center, located at 1758 W. McCord St., is always in need of volunteers on Saturday to help unload vehicles. If you are dropping off

recyclable items, please be advised that the Center no longer accepts plastic bags or plastic items #3 – #7. For more information or to volunteer call Greg at 618-5323138. If there is no answer, please leave a message.

1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. grated nutmeg 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. ground allspice

Wash, core, peel, and slice tomatoes; you should have 4 cups. Wash lemon and orange, slice them thin, and chop them coarsely. Place fruits in large, deep kettle and stir in pectin. Cook and stir over high heat until juices form and liquid boils. Add sugar and salt and boil hard, uncovered, approximately 10 minutes. Add spices during last few minutes of cooking. Remove kettle from heat and let mixture cool a few minutes. Skim off foam with metal spoon and discard. Pour preserves into 9 hot half-pint jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace at top. Seal and process for 10 minutes. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: We recently had a scary incident with our beloved collie mix, "Moon." She is an energetic dog, but one day last week she started slowing down, panting more and not wanting to play as much. A couple of days later she was even limping a bit. I took her to the veterinarian that very day! The vet quickly diagnosed Moon as having Lyme disease. She loves to run around outside on our big property, and I try to check her daily for ticks, but sometimes forget. I never noticed a tick on her, but the vet said that it's not unusual to never see

a tick or notice a bite, and yet the symptoms appear. The good news is that Moon responded very quickly to treatment. Even though she will be taking antibiotics for a few more weeks, she is back to her old energetic self. Please remind your readers to check their pets frequently for ticks and monitor them closely if they spend any time outside. — Doug in Concord, New Hampshire DEAR DOUG: I'm so glad to hear that Moon is doing OK! It is indeed very important to check pets that spend time outdoors daily for ticks. If you have multiple pets and only one goes outside, you should check all the pets. The check can be as simple as running your hand up through their fur to feel for the telltale smooth, hard bump of an attached tick. Using a flea and tick repellent also is important, but it's not 100 percent effective. So check regularly, and monitor your pet for be-
