Children from households that meet federal guidelines are eligible for free or reduced price meals or free milk. All meals served must meet the U.S. Department of Agriculture meal requirements. However, if a child has been determined by a doctor to have a disability and the disability would prevent the child from eating the regular school meal, your school will make substitutions prescribed by the doctor. If a substitution is needed, there will be no extra charge for the meal. If you believe your child needs substitutions because of a disability, please get in touch with your local school for further information. Application forms are being sent to all homes with a letter to parents or guardians. To apply for free or reduced price benefits, households must complete the application as soon as possible, sign it and return it to the school. Households should answer all applicable questions on the form. An application which does not contain all the required information cannot be processed and approved by the school. The required infor-

mation is covered below. FOOD STAMP/TANF HOUSEHOLDS: If a household currently receives Food Stamps or “Temporary Assistance for Needy Families” (TANF) for their child(ren), they only have to list the child(ren)’s name and Food Stamp or TANF case number and sign the application. Link card numbers cannot be used. A L L O T H E R HOUSEHOLDS: If a household’s income is at or below the level shown on the income scale, children are eligible for either free or reduced price meals or free milk. Households must provide the following information: (1) the names of all household members, (2) the social security number of the adult household member signing the application, or the word “non” if the adult does not have a social security number, (3) the amount of income each household member received last month, where it comes from (wages, child support, etc.) and (4) the signature of an adult household member. The information on the application may be verified by school or other officials at any time during the school year. Households may apply for benefits at any time during the school year. Households that are not eligible now but have a decrease in household income, an increase in household size, or a household member that becomes unemployed, should fill out an application at that time. In certain cases foster children are eligible for free or reduced-price meal services or free milk household income. Households that have foster children living with them and wish to apply for free or reduced-price for meal services or free milk for them should complete the application. Homeless, migrant and runaway youth are categorically eligible for free meals. In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, and Office of Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Avenue SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call 800-7953272 or 202-720-6282 (TTY). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer. Under provisions of the policy each school has designated an official who will review applications and determine eligibility. Households dissatisfied with the ruling of the official may wish to discuss the decision with the school. Households also have the right to a hearing. Each school and the central office of the district have a copy of the complete policy, which may be reviewed by interested parties.

Battle of the Acronyms Growing up as a kid (is there any other way?), the biggest fears I had in life now seem absolutely absurd. You see, I was born into an era of five-channel television. You had your big three — ABC, NBC, CBS — and then two or three stragglers that showed nothing but reruns and live sports. And the old reruns ruled. The reruns were mostly a cavalcade of extreme violence or predicaments. The Justice League would battle the Legion of Doom every Saturday morning; Godzilla would level Tokyo every Sunday morning. Superfly Snuka, Andre the Giant, Rowdy Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan would rule the afternoons. I watched kung-fu fighters avenging the dishonor of their sister or mother before church. Thanks to Wile E. Coyote, I had an inordinate fear of anvils falling from the sky and Acme in general, since it seemed to supply all his faulty weaponry. I used to worry that somebody would tie my sister to train tracks or that a hike through the woods would somehow end up with her falling into quicksand with no ape men to save her, because ape men were not indigenous to our area. But without doubt, the biggest fear I had was instilled by my parents. If I wanted to climb a tree, my mother would tell me to get down because I might fall and "bang my head." My father would amp up the terror, warning me that I would "crack my head open." We l l , t i m e s h a v e changed. The only time I've ever seen an anvil was at Colonial Williamsburg, and apparently modern science has cured the scourge of quicksand. Thanks to the UFC, you can

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area sports. It is hard to fill roster spots when nobody will play, and after this CTE report, really, parents have to be afraid for their kids. Luckily, this is nothing new. In the early days of football, the late 1800s, a Harvard coach came up with a formation designed to decimate Yale. Based on ancient military strategy, the wedge simply meant that everyone on the offensive team would grip each other's uniform in a V formation, their ball carrier safe behind them. The problem was that the wedge often singled out lone defenders with a halfton of momentum, and that actually killed people. It got to be such a problem that the president of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt, got involved. Rather than see football go, he was instrumental in changing the rules of the game so that it exists to this day. That's why they carved his face into a mountain. If we put our heads together, football can be saved. We just need to be careful and not crack our heads open.

watch kung fu without having to make it about a battle over your favorite aunt. Yet, a serious battle looms in American sports. The NFL has literally cracked its head open. A recent study confirmed what we all most likely knew: 99 percent of the brains donated to science by former NFLers showed signs of serious chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a disease that causes early-onset dementia and a host of other things associated with brain function. It is the direct result of taking numerous hits to the head. Nobody is shocked by the findings. We've known that football and fighting cause damage to the brain. Muhammad Ali couldn't even walk up the stairs at Mark Vasto is a veteran the 1996 Olympics. E R P In the news last week were Boston, Bannon, Barcelona, and the latest call from a Democrat for the assassination of Trump. Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens has called on Democratic Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal to resign after she said she "hopes the President is assassinated." On Friday in an interview she refused to apologize — twice — and she refused to resign. If she doesn't resign on her own, the Senate can vote to remove her, and so they should. Chappelle-Nadal made the original comment on Facebook, and since she has deleted it. On to the Boston protest. In the early hours of the protest, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the tension was growing. Unfortunately, we go to press early this week so the conclusion won't be in this column. However, I predict it won't be good, and I hope and pray the outcome will be without anyone hurt or any loss of life. The organizers of the Boston Rally are a group called the Boston Free Speech Coalition — which seems to be a loose collection of groups that identify as "libertarians," which I question — and according to NBC News, John Medlar, a college senior and film maker. Medlar also posted on Facebook that he invited

the Boston Chapter of Black Lives Matter to attend the rally. Even though the original rally permit issued by the mayor was for 100 people to attend, thousands are expected by the end of the day. And as I watch the crowds growing, I would guess it will grow into thousands. Five hundred police officers are on the ground with many more on reserve. At this time, there hasn't been much violence, but things can change very quickly in these situations. On to Steve Bannon, President Trump's former chief strategist. Steve Bannon's exit from the White House last week didn't come as a shock to many, and Bannon wasn't only Trump's chief strategist but was one of his most controversial advisors. Keep in mind Bannon's departure was a long time in the making, but a new round of rumors about him and his departure began after John Kelly was named Chief of Staff. So what's next for Bannon? On Friday the former chief strategist told Bloomburg, "If there’s any confusion out there, let me clear it up: I’m leaving the White House and going to war for Trump against his opponents" on Capitol Hill, in the media and in corporate America. Steve Bannon returned to work late last Friday at Breitbart News, the

popular news site he once ran that rails against the political establishment in both parties. Stay tuned, my speculation is there is a grand plan in the works. Time will tell. On to Barcelona, Spain and Cambrils, Spain, and what we know so far. Last Thursday afternoon the world was reminded that terrorism is sadly alive and well. The first attack involved a white van that smashed into people on a famous boulevard in central Barcelona. The van driver killed 13 people and injured 100, and managed to flee the scene. About eight hours later an Audi A3 plowed into pedestrians in the popular seaside town of Cambrils. One woman died and six others were hurt, including one police officer. The Audi overturned and five people got out. Four died at the scene, shot by police, and one died later of injuries. That leaves only the one suspect from the Barcelona attack still at large. These two attacks are thought to be related. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. Wily Beagle Thinks He's Houdini DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: My rescued beagle, "Fergus," is a dedicated escape artist. If I let him out in our backyard unsupervised, he will find a way under, around or over the fence in almost no time. Then I'm chasing him all over the neighborhood. I'm thinking of getting a higher fence, and in the meantime, I've changed the latch on the fence gate — he figured out how to undo the old one! What else can I do? — Frustrated Dad in Houston DEAR DAD: Escapeartist dogs can be tough to reel in. And while neighbors may ask why you can't simply keep Fergus inside, I know it's even tougher to keep a high-energy, creative dog indoors when there's a big, beautiful world just

outside the window. A multi-pronged approach is needed here. A higher fence and stronger latch are good solutions, but so is curbing that wanderlust. If Fergus isn't neutered, get that taken care of. It can dampen his tendency to wander, particularly if he's on the hunt for a female. He'll also need to be supervised every time he's outside. That means dedicating a good chunk of time to Fergus, as bringing your laptop out with you to work may not be an option — he'll likely pester you constantly to come and play. And you should. Play fetch, do some impromptu obedience training, and so on. Grab some items that will challenge Fergus. He's clever, so feed him using a "slow feeder" bowl that requires dogs to work through a grooved maze to get food. Give him toys that drop treats randomly when played with. But most of all, work with him to burn off his energy and make him more interested in staying home than trying to escape. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Weekend Breakfast

Summer Garden Quiche 6 large eggs 1 pint heavy cream 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground white pepper Pinch of dried basil Pinch of dried thyme leaves 1/2 cup sliced fully-cooked, smoked garlic sausage or diced ham

1/4 cup chopped sweet green pepper 1/4 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup chopped tomato 1/4 cup sliced fresh mushrooms 2/3 cup shredded Gruyere, Jarlsberg, or Swiss cheese

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease only bottom of 9- or 10-inch quiche dish. In medium-size bowl, mix eggs, cream, salt, pepper, basil, and thyme until well blended. In greased dish, lightly toss meat, green pepper, onion, tomato, and mushrooms until mixed. Sprinkle with cheese. Pour egg mixture over vegetables and meat. Bake quiche 40 minutes, or until golden brown. The quiche is done when knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let quiche stand 10 minutes on wire rack before serving. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Breakfast Frittata 3 medium-size potatoes 1/2 pound country or sweet Italian sausages 6 large eggs

1/4 cup milk 2 T. chopped fresh parsley leaves 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Heat oven to 375°F. Line 9- or 10-inch quiche dish with pastry. Line pastry with waxed paper or aluminum foil and fill it with dried beans or rice, or aluminum pie pellets. Bake pie crust 10 minutes, then remove from oven. Carefully remove paper and beans from pie crust. In large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Pour off and discard all but 1 T. bacon fat. Add greens, spinach, and sliced green onions. Cook, stirring frequently, until greens are wilted and no liquid remains, about 5 minutes. In large bowl, beat eggs, yolk, cream, and milk. Stir in basil, salt, nutmeg, and pinch of pepper. If desired, brush pie crust with a little egg white to help prevent sogginess. Place greens in bottom of crust; sprinkle with cheese and crumble bacon on top. Pour in egg mixture. If desired, arrange blanched green onions on top and brush lightly with egg white. Bake pie 35 minutes, or until puffed and lightly browned. Center should be slightly soft. If green onions begin to brown on top, cover quiche with aluminum foil during last 15 minutes of baking. Remove pie to wire rack and let stand 10 minutes before serving. Makes 4 to 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. By Larry Cox Foxy Grandpa Q: I have a bisque figure of "Foxy Grandpa," which has been in my family for more than a century. What can you tell me about this character? — Betty, Santa Fe, New Mexico A: "Foxy Grandpa" was created by cartoonist C.E.

Schultze. It was introduced in the New York Herald in 1900 and was an instant hit. The strip moved to the New York American in 1902 and eventually to the New York Press, where it remained until 1918. The cartoons triggered many products, including games, postcards, song sheets and bisque figurines. It even inspired a Broadway musical. Your figurine probably was issued in 1905 and is valued in the $50 to $200 range, depending on condition. *** Q: I have a biscuit jar that an appraiser identified as overshot glass. What is overshot glass? — Mary, Illinois A: Overshot glass was developed during the 19th century. Pieces generally appear to be frosted or iced, an effect made possible when a gather of molten glass is rolled over a marver covered with crushed glass. Early pieces that I've seen are clear, but examples in color also were made. A search on eBay found many overshot glass items, but no biscuit jars. For example, a number of overshot glass pitchers were listed in the $40 to $100 range, with a few much higher. ***

Q: My grandma collected thimbles throughout the 1940s and '50s. Her collection is unique, since all of her thimbles promoted various political candidates. Her thimbles include ones issued during the Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Eisenhower and Nixon campaigns. Are they valuable? — Jon, Ohio A: After the 19th Amendment expanded women's suffrage throughout the country, thimbles emerged as campaign tools directed toward the new voting constituents. Most of the political thimbles I've seen in shops sell in the $10 to $25 range. *** Q: I have some 33-rpm LPs of Dean Martin, Perry Como, Al Hirt and others from this era. Where can I sell them? — Jeane, New Mexico A: Most LPs — such as the ones you mentioned — sell for about a dollar each, sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on rarity and condition. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Who is Jesus? One question can change your life. How you answer it will determine your eternal destiny. Jesus was walking up a rocky path with his disciples when he asked them this most vital question, “’Who do men say that I, the Son of man, am?’ So they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ (People may have various opinions of who Jesus is, but most important is who do you say Jesus is?) Jesus said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon answered ... ‘You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:13-18) History, archeology, and science may give evidence of who Jesus is, but one must have a divine revelation to fully know who Jesus is. “Jesus answered and said, ‘Blessed are you, Simon bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 16:17) As we briefly examine these aspects of Jesus, may we come to a greater revelation of who this amazing Jesus is and form a deeper love for

him. THE HISTORICAL JESUS. There are many myths throughout literature and history of heroes and villains. But Jesus is not a myth. His life is a historical fact. Well known Jewish historian Josephus makes mention of this man Jesus numerous times in his writings. There are far more historical references to Jesus than any other person in ancient times, such as Plato or Alexander the Great. Consider this excerpt from Dr. James Francis’ “One Solitary Life.” “Here is a man born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman . . . He worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher . . . Nineteen long centuries have come and gone and today he is the centerpiece of humanity and leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say all the armies that ever

marched, all the navies that were ever built, all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon the earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.” Who is Jesus? He is more than a carpenter. THE PROPHET JESUS. When Jesus asked, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” The disciples replied, “One of the prophets or John the Baptist.” Jesus was indeed a prophet. He prophesied that he would be put to death but on the third day he would rise again — and he did. He prophesied the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem — it happened as he said, “not one stone left upon another.” In 70 AD Jerusalem was besieged and the temple destroyed. Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet and he is. But Jesus is more than a prophet. T H E T E AC H E R JESUS. Jesus was called rabbi, even by the Jewish leaders. Multitudes gathered to hear him teach. The Jewish leaders marveled at his wisdom. The people were astonished at his teaching, “for he taught them as one

having authority and not as the scribes.” (Matthew 7:29) Jesus was either a deceiver, a lunatic, a devilish egomaniac, or he was who he claimed to be — the Son of God. No man who taught the moral laws and spiritual maxims of the kingdom of God with such wisdom and authority as Jesus did, could possibly be a deceiver, lunatic, or devilish egomaniac. There can only be one conclusion — he is who he claimed to be — the Son of God — deity. Yes, he claimed deity and accepted worship. That’s why the Jewish leaders charged him with blasphemy. But he is more than a teacher. (Matthew 26:65; John 10:33; 14:7-9) Isaiah prophesied of him, “. . . And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) We will continue part 2 of “Who is Jesus” next week. But how would you answer these vital questions — Who is Jesus? What will you do with this wonderful Jesus? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Of course, at the time he stated this desire, he was

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) As eager as you are to take on that new challenge, it would be best to temper that spurt of “Ram”-bunctious energy until you have more facts to back up your decision. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time for hardworking Bovines to take a break from their hectic on-the-job schedules to bask in the unconditional love and support of friends and family. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to what you hear in the workplace. You could pick up some hints about possible changes. Meanwhile, a new infusion of creative energy sets in by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Try to be more flexible in dealing with a suddenly difficult situation, whether it’s on the job or in the home. Others might have some good points to offer. Listen to them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might think you’re not getting the royal treatment you deserve. But be careful not to become a royal pain by complaining about it. Be patient and allow things to work out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Watch that penchant for being superjudgmental at work. It might create a bad impression with someone whose decisions could determine the course of your career. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ve been your usual busy-bee self, gathering nectar wherever you can

But change comes slowly, so be patient. Expect someone to bring more positive news by week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Whoa! Ease up on that hectic pace you’ve been putting yourself through. Take time to recharge your energy levels before going full gallop again. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Try to be intrigued, not intimidated, by the issues you’re suddenly facing, and you’ll be ahead of the game. Don’t be afraid to demand answers to your questions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New associates freezing you out of their inner circle? Never mind. Put a warm smile on that friendly face of yours, and you’ll soon thaw them all down to size. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your wise guidance helps colleagues agree to compromise and move forward. Meanwhile, there are still vital issues you need to deal with in your personal life. Now that you are imagining it, here's a hint: The babies have to nuzzle into mom's armpit (wingpit?) to get to the milk. • The year the Second Continental Congress

Wednesday, August 23, 2017

issued the Declaration of Independence, establishing the United States of America, the fledgling nation had a total population of 2½ million — less than one-third of 1 percent of the global population. By 1800, even though the population of the growing nation had more than doubled, America still ranked 16th in the list of most-populous nations. Today, though, with a population of over 325 million, the United States has more people than any country except China and India. • Those who study such things say that as we get older, we breathe

You can refer to a grounded group as a bank or a drift (presumably due its resemblance to a drift of snow); in the air, they can, collectively, be called a wedge. The best choice, however, might be the fanciful term "a lamentation of swans." *** Thought for the Day: It has been said that a pretty face is a passport, but it's not.
