STORE HOURS MON. - THURS. 9 A.M. TO 5:30 P.M. FRIDAY 9 A.M. - 7 P.M. SATURDAYS 9 A.M. - 5 P.M.

In the news last week were Boston, Bannon, Barcelona, and the latest call from a Democrat for the assassination of Trump. Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens has called on Democratic Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal to resign after she said she "hopes the President is assassinated." On Friday in an interview she refused to apologize — twice — and she refused to resign. If she doesn't resign on her own, the Senate can vote to remove her, and so they should. Chappelle-Nadal made the original comment on Facebook, and since she has deleted it. On to the Boston protest. In the early hours of the protest, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the tension was growing. Unfortunately, we go to press early this week so the conclusion won't be in this column. However, I predict it won't be good, and I hope and pray the outcome will be without anyone hurt or any loss of life. The organizers of the Boston Rally are a group called the Boston Free Speech Coalition — which seems to be a loose collection of groups that identify as "libertarians," which I question — and according to NBC News, John Medlar, a college senior and film maker. Medlar also posted on Facebook that he invited

the Boston Chapter of Black Lives Matter to attend the rally. Even though the original rally permit issued by the mayor was for 100 people to attend, thousands are expected by the end of the day. And as I watch the crowds growing, I would guess it will grow into thousands. Five hundred police officers are on the ground with many more on reserve. At this time, there hasn't been much violence, but things can change very quickly in these situations. On to Steve Bannon, President Trump's former chief strategist. Steve Bannon's exit from the White House last week didn't come as a shock to many, and Bannon wasn't only Trump's chief strategist but was one of his most controversial advisors. Keep in mind Bannon's departure was a long time in the making, but a new round of rumors about him and his departure began after John Kelly was named Chief of Staff. So what's next for Bannon? On Friday the former chief strategist told Bloomburg, "If there’s any confusion out there, let me clear it up: I’m leaving the White House and going to war for Trump against his opponents" on Capitol Hill, in the media and in corporate America. Steve Bannon returned to work late last Friday at Breitbart News, the

popular news site he once ran that rails against the political establishment in both parties. Stay tuned, my speculation is there is a grand plan in the works. Time will tell. On to Barcelona, Spain and Cambrils, Spain, and what we know so far. Last Thursday afternoon the world was reminded that terrorism is sadly alive and well. The first attack involved a white van that smashed into people on a famous boulevard in central Barcelona. The van driver killed 13 people and injured 100, and managed to flee the scene. About eight hours later an Audi A3 plowed into pedestrians in the popular seaside town of Cambrils. One woman died and six others were hurt, including one police officer. The Audi overturned and five people got out. Four died at the scene, shot by police, and one died later of injuries. That leaves only the one suspect from the Barcelona attack still at large. These two attacks are thought to be related. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. KIM MAGEE WINS THE HIGH FLY CUP

Born to fly! This year's High Fly Cup winner is Kim Magee of Swisher, Iowa, who flies the balloon Ribbon Racer. Kim has been involved in ballooning all her life, growing up with parents who are also balloon pilots, Scott and Cynthia Wooge. Kim knows Centralia well and has been involved with many of the Centralia Balloon Fests. Magee says, "It's great to receive this recognition from many of the pilots I've grown up watching as a child." But that's just part of the story. salem FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 2017 • 7:30 P.M. • Jim Fink's FIELD • Salem Centralia High School won last year's game 22 – 0. Pictured on these pages are scenes from last year's game.

The Shriners Football game is more than just a competitive game between two teams. For the past 64 years, the Centralia Orphans and the Salem Wildcats have come together for the first battle of the football season. But the real battle is behind the scenes. Before game night, the Centralia Orphans and the Salem Wildcats football players get to see what the game and the battle is really about and why this game is so important. They usually tour the St. Louis Shriners Hospital for

Children, getting the opportunity to see the different ways the hospital helps the children. And, as a part of the children's therapy, the players spend time playing and getting to know the children in a designated reception area. Once they've been there and they see where the proceeds of the game go, they realize it's all for the children and it puts a whole new meaning into the game. All proceeds of the Shriners Football game goes to the St. Louis Shriners Hospital to help children in need at no cost

One question can change your life. How you answer it will determine your eternal destiny. Jesus was walking up a rocky path with his disciples when he asked them this most vital question, “’Who do men say that I, the Son of man, am?’

So they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ (People may have various opinions of who Jesus is, but most important is who do you say Jesus is?) Jesus said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon answered . . . ‘You are the Christ, the son

Wednesday, August 23, 2017 of the living God. (Matthew 16:13-18) History, archeology, and science may give evidence of who Jesus is, but one must have a divine revelation to fully know who Jesus is. “Jesus answered and said, ‘Blessed are you, Simon bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. (Matthew 16:17) As we briefly examine these aspects of Jesus, may we come to a greater revelation of who this amazing Jesus is and form a deeper love for him. THE HISTORICAL JESUS. There are many myths throughout literature and history of heroes and villains. But Jesus is not a myth. His life is a historical fact. Well known Jewish historian Josephus makes mention of this man Jesus numerous times in his writings. There are far more historical references to Jesus than any other person in ancient times, such as Plato or Alexander the Great. Consider this excerpt from Dr. James Francis’ “One Solitary Life. “Here is a man born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman . . . He worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher . . . Nineteen long centuries have come and gone and today he is the centerpiece of humanity and leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built, all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon the earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life. Who is Jesus? He is more than a carpenter. THE PROPHET JESUS. When Jesus asked, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? The disciples replied, “One of the proph-

ets or John the Baptist. Jesus was indeed a prophet. He prophesied that he would be put to death but on the third day he would rise again — and he did. He prophesied the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem — it happened as he said, “not one stone left upon another. In 70 AD Jerusalem was besieged and the temple destroyed. Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet and he is. But Jesus is more than a prophet. THE TEACHER JESUS. Jesus was called rabbi, even by the Jewish leaders. Multitudes gathered to hear him teach. The Jewish leaders marveled at his wisdom. The people were astonished at his teaching, “for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. (Matthew 7:29) Jesus was either a deceiver, a lunatic, a devilish egomaniac, or he was who he claimed to be — the Son of God. No man who taught the moral laws and spiritual maxims of the kingdom of God with such wisdom and authority as Jesus did, could possibly be a deceiver, lunatic, or devilish egomaniac. There can only be one conclusion — he is who he claimed to be — the Son of God — deity. Yes, he claimed deity and accepted worship. That’s why the Jewish leaders charged him with blasphemy. But he is more than a teacher. (Matthew 26:65; John 10:33; 14:7-9) Isaiah prophesied of him, “. . . And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) We will continue part 2 of “Who is Jesus next week. But how would you answer these vital questions — Who is Jesus? What will you do with this wonderful Jesus? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Weekend Breakfast

My family especially loves breakfast on the weekend when there's more time to linger at the dining room table, enjoying the conversation with one another over a hot freshly ground cup of coffee with real cream and a big breakfast. It's a great way to start the day, no matter what the day holds in store. Some of our family favorites are quiche and frittata. Enjoy your own with the recipes below.

Summer Garden Quiche 6 large eggs 1 pint heavy cream 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground white pepper Pinch of dried basil Pinch of dried thyme leaves 1/2 cup sliced fully-cooked, smoked garlic sausage or diced ham

Breakfast Frittata 1/4 cup milk 2 T. chopped fresh parsley leaves 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

In 2-quart saucepan, heat 2 inches water to boiling. Meanwhile, peel and slice potatoes. Boil potatoes just until fork-tender. Drain. Slice sausages into 1/2-inch pieces. In heavy 10-inch skillet with oven-safe handle, saute sausage pieces, stirring occasionally, until cooked: Drain off fat. Add potatoes to sausage. In large bowl, beat eggs, milk, parsley, and salt. Pour egg mixture over potatoes and sausage. Cover and cook over low heat 7 to 9 minutes, or until center of frittata is set. Heat broiler. Sprinkle frittata with cheese. Broil frittata 6 inches from heat until cheese is melted and lightly browned. Let frittata stand 10 minutes on wire rack. Cut into wedges and serve. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Spring Greens Pie Pastry for 1 pie crust 6 slices lean bacon 6 oz. (4 to 5 cups) tender dandelion greens, trimmed and rinsed 6 oz. (4 to 5 cups) young, fresh spinach or beet greens, trimmed and rinsed 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions 3 large eggs 1 large egg yolk

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease only bottom of 9- or 10-inch quiche dish. In medium-size bowl, mix eggs, cream, salt, pepper, basil, and thyme until well blended. In greased dish, lightly toss meat, green pepper, onion, tomato, and mushrooms until mixed. Sprinkle with cheese. Pour egg mixture over vegetables and meat. Bake quiche 40 minutes, or until golden brown. The quiche is done when knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let quiche stand 10 minutes on wire rack before serving. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

3 medium-size potatoes 1/2 pound country or sweet Italian sausages 6 large eggs

WE COVER THE THINGS YOU CARE ABOUT!

1 cup (1/2 pint) heavy cream or sour cream 3/4 cup milk 1/4 tsp. dried basil 1/4 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg Ground black pepper 1 large egg white, beaten (opt.) 1/2 cup shredded Jarlsberg cheese 5 small green onions, blanched (opt.)

Heat oven to 375°F. Line 9- or 10-inch quiche dish with pastry. Line pastry with waxed paper or aluminum foil and fill it with dried beans or rice, or aluminum pie pellets. Bake pie crust 10 minutes, then remove from oven. Carefully remove paper and beans from pie crust. In large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Pour off and discard all but 1 T. bacon fat. Add greens, spinach, and sliced green onions. Cook, stirring frequently, until greens are wilted and no liquid remains, about 5 minutes. In large bowl, beat eggs, yolk, cream, and milk. Stir in basil, salt, nutmeg, and pinch of pepper. If desired, brush pie crust with a little egg white to help prevent sogginess. Place greens in bottom of crust; sprinkle with cheese and crumble bacon on top. Pour in egg mixture. If desired, arrange blanched green onions on top and brush lightly with egg white. Bake pie 35 minutes, or until puffed and lightly browned. Center should be slightly soft. If green onions begin to brown on top, cover quiche with aluminum foil during last 15 minutes of baking. Remove pie to wire rack and let stand 10 minutes before serving. Makes 4 to 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Wily Beagle Thinks He's Houdini DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My rescued beagle, "Fergus," is a dedicated escape artist. If I let him out in our backyard unsupervised, he will find a way under, around or over the fence in almost no time. Then I'm chasing him all over the neighborhood. I'm thinking of getting a higher fence, and in the meantime, I've changed the latch on the fence gate — he figured out how to undo the old one! What else can I do? — Frustrated Dad in Houston DEAR DAD: Escapeartist dogs can be tough to reel in. And while neighbors may ask why you can't simply keep Fergus inside, I know it's even tougher to

keep a high-energy, creative dog indoors when there's a big, beautiful world just outside the window. A multi-pronged approach is needed here. A higher fence and stronger latch are good solutions, but so is curbing that wanderlust. If Fergus isn't neutered, get that taken care of. It can dampen his tendency to wander, particularly if he's on the hunt for a female. He'll also need to be supervised every time he's outside. That means dedicating a good chunk of time to Fergus, as bringing your laptop out with you to work may not be an option — he'll likely pester you constantly to come and play. And you should. Play fetch, do some impromptu obedience training, and so on. Grab some items that will challenge Fergus. He's clever, so feed him using a "slow feeder" bowl that requires dogs to work through a grooved maze to get food. Give him toys that drop treats randomly when

TOP THREE PILOTS AT BALLOON FEST 2017

Shopper’s Weekly Staff Photos

Pictured (L to R): Third Place, Jared Miller, First Place, Randy Conklin and Second Place, Jim Phelan

The top three winners and sponsors at Balloon Fest 2016 were: First Place Randy Conklin,

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) As eager as you are to take on that new challenge, it would be best to temper that spurt of “Ram”-bunctious energy until you have more facts to back up your decision. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time for hardworking Bovines to take a break from their hectic on-the-job schedules to bask in the unconditional love and support of friends and family. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to what you hear in the workplace. You could pick up some hints about possible changes. Meanwhile, a new infusion of creative energy sets in by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Try to be more flexible in dealing with a suddenly difficult situation, whether it’s on the job or in the home. Others might have some good points to offer. Listen to them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might think you’re not getting the royal treatment you deserve. But be careful not to become a royal pain by complaining about it. Be patient and allow things to work out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Watch that penchant for being superjudgmental at work. It might create a bad impression with someone whose decisions could determine the course of your career. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ve been your usual busy-bee self, gathering nectar wherever you can

find it. But now’s a good time to kick back, relax and just enjoy smelling the roses. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That pesky personal situation seems to be improving. But change comes slowly, so be patient. Expect someone to bring more positive news by week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Whoa! Ease up on that hectic pace you’ve been putting yourself through. Take time to recharge your energy levels before going full gallop again. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Try to be intrigued, not intimidated, by the issues you’re suddenly facing, and you’ll be ahead of the game. Don’t be afraid to demand answers to your questions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New associates freezing you out of their inner circle? Never mind. Put a warm smile on that friendly face of yours, and you’ll soon thaw them all down to size. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your wise guidance helps colleagues agree to compromise and move forward. Meanwhile, there are still vital issues you need to deal with in your personal life. BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy being free with your emotions, but you also can exercise disciplined focus. You would make a fine artist. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
