SOUTHERN ILLINOIS BEEF SENATE GIVES FINAL LEGISLATIVE APPROVAL TO ASSOCIATION FIELD DAY EDUCATION FUNDING PLAN SET FOR SEPT. 16

SUMMER SALE

Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon) said while his decision on Senate Bill 1947 wasn’t easy, he didn’t make up his mid until during Senate debate Tuesday, August 29. Sen. McCarter said in the end, SB1947 shortchanges 54th District schools like the previous version in Senate Bill 1, and leaves taxpayers liable for yet another tax increase. He issued the following statement after the Senate session concluded: “Senate Bill 1947 had within it some good things like a tax credit scholarship program and a little mandate relief, but in the end it ended up being a very expensive proposition to put hundreds of millions of dollars into education, a promise that I do not believe we can keep… We have an unbalanced budget of $2.6 billion and we’re promising to our schools an extra $750 million

and then another $350 million on top of that, every year…” “Everything promised doesn’t provide equity for the schools in my district compared to Chicago. There is still a huge difference in what our downstate schools get and what Chicago receives. Lastly, there was no property tax relief that applied to our districts… Again, this is a very expensive proposition that I believe is going to require another tax increase and I will not be a part of putting more burden on the taxpayers of this state, who are already challenged to get by with the last tax increase.” Senate Bill 1947 was approved by the Senate on a vote of 38–13–4. It previously was passed by the House on Monday on a vote of 73–34–3. The measure now heads to the Governor who has promised to sign it.

#7 Lilac Lane • Centralia, Illinois

This week I couldn't seem to keep my mind in the world of politics. It all seems so unimportant when I look at Hurricane Harvey and the destruction it left in its path in Texas and Louisiana. B oth Kat r ina and Har ve y brought our country to its knees with concern and sorrow for our fellow Americans. Many volunteers have already come to the aid of Texas and Louisiana, with more arriving daily to help, from aiding with rescues to starting the process of recovery. Thousands have experienced the loss of their everyday lives. Many will never be able to return to the home that they found comfort in, as well as their businesses and jobs, and the realization is probably just now setting in after the shock. The saddest stories are of the loss of lives of family members, friends and neighbors, not to mention the grief of some having to leave their family pets behind. I'm heartbroken for all those affected by one of the worst national disasters this country has ever seen, if not the worst. As the days, weeks and months go by, the need will become greater and greater. Each of us can contribute as America comes together to help, no matter what party you are connected to. To start with, I believe in the great power of prayer and have witnessed firsthand the results! However, along with prayer, there are other ways each of us can contribute to our fellow

Americans in desperate need. Below are only a few of the things we can all do locally. Along with the thousands of volunteers, emergency crews, and those that distribute meals and cleanup supplies — people that are already on the ground — at the present time the Red Cross is focused on deploying registered nurses and trained volunteers. One way you can help is through financial donations that can be made by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800RED CROSS, or texting the word "HARVEY" to 90999 to make a $10 donation. The Red Cross also needs blood donations. The need for blood is constant and the Red Cross currently has an urgent need for blood donations across the country due to a summer decline in blood donors and blood drive sponsors. In Texas, they are closely monitoring their blood supplies amid this ongoing disaster. With dangerous widespread flooding in Southeast Texas, all blood collection organizations in the U.S. are making efforts to meet patient blood needs and to ensure a sufficient blood supply in storm affected areas. Blood donations are always encouraged and the Red Cross stands ready to provide blood products as needed. A regional company also helping is South Central Transit. They are offering a program where you can ride free till Friday, September 8 with a donation of goods like new and

unopened shampoo, soap, toothpaste, paper towels, band-aids, baby wipes, diapers, household cleaning supplies such as bleach and laundry soap, trash bags, mops, buckets, work gloves or human ready to eat food (nonperishable items only). No shoes, clothes or any textile items will be accepted. During the Texas Relief program you can help stuff a bus! For more information please call them at 800660-7433 or visit them on facebook or at www.south centraltransit.org. You can also donate through the Salvation Army by sending a check to Salvation Army, P.O. Box 664, Centralia IL 62801. To make sure that your dollars go to help Hurricane Harvey victims, simply put in the memo area "Hurricane Harvey," then every dime will go towards helping in Texas and Louisiana. There are many ways you can help and so many have already done so, like Christy Jordan, along with daughter Brandi, who collected goods and then headed for Texas last Sunday with donations received when Christy started a grass roots campaign. To all that are helping, God Bless You!

If you want something different, this house has personality! Low maintenance with brick and Bedford stone sitting on a scenic double lot with fenced in backyard. 3BR, 2½ Baths, formal living and dining room with built-in hutch and fireplaces. Also, family room with built-in book cases, bonus sun room, kitchen with a breakfast bar, utility room with linen closet and large pantry. Oversized 2-Car Garage. Also, Many Updates. A Must See!

2002 near Roscoe, Illinois, CWD has been detected in 17 counties across the northern edge and northeastern portions of Illinois as far south as the Illinois River Valley. Counties affected include Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Carroll, Ogle, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, Livingston, and Kankakee. The public meetings on CWD will each begin at 7

p.m. with a 30-minute presentation and discussion to follow. Meetings will be held as follows: September 12 – Galena City Hall, 101 Green St., Galena, IL; Sept. 14 – Lena Community Center, 497 Lions Dr., Lena, IL; Sept. 26 – Illinois State Rifle Association Shooting Range, 1589 N. 7000W Rd, Bonfield, IL (approximately 7 miles west of Kankakee); Sept. 27 – Pontiac Sportsman’s Club, 18663 4H Park Rd,

Pontiac, IL; Sept. 28 – MCCD’s Lost Valley Visitors Center, 6316 Harts Road, Ringwood, IL; Oct. 12 – Belvidere Community Building, 111 W. First St., Belvidere, IL; For more information about the meetings or CWD, contact Doug Dufford, IDNR Wildlife Disease Program Manager at 815-369-2414 or by email at doug.dufford@ illinois.gov.

Favorite Mexican Salsas Now is the time to make the most of the season. It's easy to turn summer produce and seasonings into Mexican salsas that add robust flavors to favorite dishes. A few of my favorites are below.

Salsa Verde 10 tomatillos, diced 1/2 cup chopped Spanish onion 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro or parsley

2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced 2 tsp. lime juice 1/2 tsp. salt

Combine all ingredients; cover and chill. Serve with chips, seafood, or chicken. Yield: 2 cups.

Garden Salsa 1/4 lb. fresh green beans 2 ears fresh corn 3 medium tomatoes, diced 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup diced green pepper 1/4 cup diced purple onion

2 T. minced fresh basil or 2 tsp. dried whole basil 1 T. lime juice 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced

Wash beans, and remove strings. Remove husks and silks from corn. Place beans and corn in boiling water to cover. Return water to boil; cook 4 minutes. Drain and immediately cover vegetables with ice water. Let stand until cool; drain. Cut corn from cob, and cut beans into 1/4inch pieces. Combine beans, corn, tomatoes, and remaining ingredients, stirring gently; cover and chill. Serve with chips, fish, chicken, or over toasted French bread. Yield: 4 cups.

Fresh Tomato Salsa 5 medium tomatoes, diced 1/3 cup tomato sauce 1/4 cup finely chopped purple onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 to 2 small jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced

2 T. minced fresh cilantro or parsley 1 T. minced fresh oregano or 1 tsp. dried whole oregano 2 T. lime juice 1 tsp. salt

Combine all ingredients, stirring gently; cover and chill. Serve over toasted French bread or with chips, fish, or chicken. Yield: 3⅓ cups.

Mexi-Corn Salsa 5 ears fresh yellow corn 1 medium tomato, diced 1 small jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 (4 oz.) can chopped green chiles, undrained

1/4 cup sliced green onions 2 T. olive oil 2 T. white vinegar 1/2 tsp. salt

Remove husks and silks from corn. Place ears in boiling water to cover. Return water to boil; cook 4 minutes. Drain and immediately cover ears with ice water. Drain corn, and cut from cob. Combine corn and remaining ingredients, stirring gently; cover and chill. Serve salsa with chicken or pork. Yield: 3 cups.

Peach Salsa 1/2 tsp. minced fresh ginger root 5 peaches, peeled, chopped, and divided 1/4 cup minced green onions 1½ T. sugar

1/2 tsp. dry mustard 1½ T. lime juice 1/8 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. white pepper

Combine ginger root and 1/4 of peaches in container of electric blender; process until smooth. Combine remaining peaches, pureed peach mixture, green onions, and remaining ingredients, stirring gently; cover and chill up to 4 hours. Serve with ham, pork, chicken, or seafood. Yield: 2½ cups.

Double Chile Salsa 2 cups chopped tomatoes (about 1 lb.) 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1/3 cup chopped green pepper 1 (4 oz.) can chopped green chiles, drained

1 T. seeded, chopped jalapeno pepper 1/2 to 1 tsp. hot sauce 1/8 tsp. garlic powder 1/8 tsp. seasoning salt

THE BENEFITS TO QUITTING SMOKING

S

moking has been linked to a number of negative side effects, including raising smokers’ risk of cancer and cardiovas c u lar disease. Quitting smoking can greatly reduce the likelihood of both of those outcomes, but the additional benefits of kicking tobacco to the c urb may sur pr is e

smokers. According to the American Lung Association, smokers’ heart rates drop to normal levels within 20 minutes of quitting smoking. While not all side effects of quitting smoking are so immediate, many are just as impactful. The health benefits of quitting smoking are

seemingly endless. The Office of the U.S. Surgeon General says quitting smoking is the single most important step smokers can take to improve the length and quality of their lives. The health benefits of quitting smoking are too numerous to list them all, but the following are some of the ways that quitting can

improve smokers’ overall health. • Quitting benefits blood pressure. Smokers’ blood pressure levels can return to normal levels within two hours of quitting. Smokers may also notice their fingers and toes starting to feel warm shortly after they quit. That sensation occurs because quitting smoking

also improves circulation. • Quitting decreases levels of carbon monoxide in the body. When smoked, lit cigarettes release carbon monoxide, which compromises smokers’ ability to absorb oxygen into the bloodstream. That makes it difficult for red blood cells to carry oxygen. Body tissue that does not receive an adequate supply of oxygen can cease to function. But according to the American Heart Association, after 12 hours of smoke-free living, the carbon monoxide levels in smokers’ blood return to normal. • Quitting reduces risk of stroke. Stroke is another of the myriad of cardiovascular diseases that has a connection to smoking. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is blocked or when blood vessels in the brain burst and cause brain tissue to die. Smoking increases the

FREE

buildup of plaque in blood vessels, which can block blood from getting to the brain. Smoking also causes blood vessels to thicken and narrow, again compromising the body’s ability to get blood to the brain. Within five to fifteen years of quitting smoking, smokers’ risk of having a stroke is the same as that of nonsmokers. • Quitting can make it easier to exercise. Many smokers experience shortness of breath, which can make it difficult to commit to the kind of exercise that promotes short- and longterm health. Smoking damages the cilia, which are tiny structures that push mucus out of the lungs. Cilia damaged by smoking begin to repair within one month of quitting smoking, resulting in fewer coughing fits and instances of shortness of breath. Smokers interested in quitting can visit www. smokefree.gov for more information and support.

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

3 Objects of Fruitfulness It excites me each fall to see a bountiful harvest gathered in across our great nation. A farmer expects a harvest. A gardener anticipates the abundant produce from his labor. An orchard keeper expects a bountiful harvest from his fruit trees. Jesus went up to a fig tree expecting figs. When he saw the fig tree was barren, he cursed it and it immediately dried up and died. God expects fruit from his children. As I was speaking at the county jail, a young man raised his hand and asked me, "Are you saying that all I have to do is believe and my sins will be forgiven and I will go to heaven?" I replied, "Yes! And no. Yes, the Bible makes it clear that salvation is by faith alone in the finished work of Christ on the cross. (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16) But we are commanded to bring forth fruits of repentance." (Matthew 3:1-8, 10) God not only expects fruitfulness in believers, but gives us the power to be fruitful Christians. Eight times in John 15 Jesus referred to fruit. The number eight is the number of new beginnings, of resurrection, of

1. Is the book of James in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Joshua 10, the sun stood still while Joshua's army destroyed what people? Amorites, Midianites, Egyptians, Philistines

a new creation. In John 15 Jesus gives us three objects necessary for fruitfulness in our lives. THE VINE! Jesus said, 'I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener." (John 15:1 NIV) Jesus' followers were very familiar with the vineyard. The vine bore life to the branches. In the Old Testament, Israel, who had rebelled and forsaken God, was referred to as "a wild vine." The psalmist prophesied that God would bring "a vine out of Egypt." (Psalm 80:8) Isaiah prophesied of the coming Messiah, "That day there shall be a root of Jesse." (Isaiah 11:10) In the 1800s some Italian and Greek settlers traveled west to California by covered wagon bringing their precious grape vines. Several years ago, I visited my wife's family in Northern California. As I took a walk, I saw the fruitful vineyards that were planted over a century ago by the Italian and

Greek settlers. The vineyards are still bearing fruit today. The vine gives life to the branches. Jesus is the true vine. He is the true light. He is the true bread of life. Are you connected to the vine? Paul said, "Christ in you, the hope of glory." (Colossians 1:27) THE BRANCHES! "I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5-6) Jesus gave us the secret of fruitfulness. As branches we must simply "abide in the vine!" Stay connected to Jesus. The branch doesn't grit its teeth, squirm, twist, or turn; it just abides. What does it mean to abide in Jesus? To abide is to be in constant fellowship. (Revelation 3:20; I John 1:7) Three things can cause the branches of a vine to become fruitless: through running to the leaves, diseases like blight, or old age — they will wither and die. God's Word gives the solution, "For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that you shall never be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (II Peter 1:8) Keep going

after Jesus. (II Peter 1:5-7) Keep him in focus. How do we remain in Jesus — the vine? The living Word of God and prayer keeps us connected to the vine. (John 15:5-7) THE GARDENER! Jesus said, "And my Father is the gardener." (John 15:1 NIV) The New King James Version calls him "the vine dresser." Look at the important work of the vine dresser. (John 15:1-2) He takes away or cleans off every branch that does not bear fruit. We are washed with the water of the Word of God. (John 15:3) He prunes us. God loves us too much to leave us alone. Are there some things in your life that God wants to prune from your life to make you more fruitful? Submit to his care. Remember that without Jesus, the vine, we can do nothing! (John 15:5) These three objects will make you fruitful: the vine, the branches, and the gardener. "By this my Father is glorified that you bear much fruit; so, you will be my true disciples." (John 15:8) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ILLINOIS BICENTENNIAL KICKOFF AT KASKASKIA ISLAND As part of the Celebration for Illinois’ 200th Birthday Celebration in 2018, all 102 counties in Illinois have been asked to name a liaison to “Illinois 200: The Bicentennial Celebration.” Marion County native, Mark Decker, has been named to this position by County Board Chairman, Erwin Hahn. Decker is currently serving as the chairman of the Salem Historical Commission and has been a member of the Marion County Genealogical & Historical Society in the past. Decker is a former board member of the Friends of the Vandalia Statehouse which is now merged with the Vandalia Historical Society. His volunteer activities with that group included raising money to help repair the Vandalia Statehouse windows and support the Annual Christmas Gala at Illinois’ oldest state capitol building where noted Illinois figures like Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas walked the actual floors of that historic building. He also assisted with the convention of the Association of Lincoln Presenters held in Vandalia in 2015. “I am honored to be selected to represent our county for the Illinois Bicentennial and look forward to working with the various historical

Instead, get rid of that woe-is-me attitude by getting up and getting out to meet old friends and make new ones.
