First up this week: DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). On September 5, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions made a statement regarding the future of the DACA Program, which is still in place, although who knows for how long! The big question is, are there any efforts in Congress to protect the Dreamers? The answer is yes. On July 20, a number of senators, both Democrats and Republicans, introduced the Dream Act of 2017. It would allow a selected number of young immigrants to earn lawful, permanent residence, and eventually American citizenship, if they meet certain requirements. None of the requirements are unreasonable, from being a long time resident who came to the U.S. before age 18, to being a graduate from high school or obtaining a GED. However, early last week President Trump made a decision to rescind DACA. Many disagree with Trump on this issue, like New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan who said Trump's decision has turned the Dreamers into "political hockey pucks." Steve Bannon's response to that was, "As much as I respect Cardinal Dolan and the bishops on doctrine, this is not doctrine... This is about the sovereignty of a nation. And in that regard, [referring to the Cardinal and the bishops] they're just another guy with an opinion." Wow!
The latest Trump move on DACA is kicking it back to Congress, which Obama did in 2012. On to the state of Illinois. What a mess. The stupidity just keeps on keeping on! I don't understand Gov. Bruce Rauner's thinking on SB31. In comes the Illinois Trust Act, aimed at protecting illegal immigrants. In lay terms it makes Illinois a sanctuary state, jeopardizing federal funding, possibly leaving Illinois in even more financial trouble. As if things aren't bad enough with the rocket scientists we have in Springfield, now we can add Rauner to that list. Rauner had committed to signing the Illinois Trust Act and did just that, making Illinois a leader in welcoming illegals and providing the strongest statewide protections in the country. So what does this mean? The bill makes every school, hospital and nursing home a sanctuary location. Local police can not comply with immigration detainers and warrants not issued by a judge. Local police can not stop, search or arrest anyone based on the person's immigration or citizenship status. According to the Illinois Review, "Laws vary from city to city, but in general, any state or local employers would be forbidden from asking the immigration status of anyone, including those who are incarcerated, those who are applying for a state identification card, those who are applying for
public assistance, and possibly even those who are applying for jobs. "This law would take effect while the state of Illinois is crumbling under the weight of its budget deficit and ongoing debt, while also making it easier for illegal immigrants to not only live in the state of Illinois, but to take jobs away from U.S. citizens who should rightfully have them." But one of the strongest points the Illinois Review makes, in my opinion, is the question and answer below: "What are illegal aliens costing the state of Illinois?" The answer: "It’s estimated that there are roughly 550,000 illegal aliens residing in the state of Illinois, at a cost to state and local taxpayers of roughly $4.6 billion annually. Nationally, it’s estimated that illegal aliens cost federal, and state and local taxpayers roughly $116 billion annually." All this leaves me wondering can our state lawmakers make any wise decisions, from bills passed to tax increases and spending sprees. The 69th annual Okawville Fair and Wheat Festival will be held at the Okawville Community Club Park on September 15, 16, and 17. The 3-day event will kick of f Fr i d ay e ve n i ng , September 15 with the Miss Okawville Fair Queen Pageant and Junior Miss Crowning beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Junior/ Senior High School building. The 2017 Queen will reign over the fair and appear in the parade on Sunday afternoon. J. Christopher, Most Dangerous One Man Band will be the featured entertainment Friday evening from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Concession stands will open at 5:00 p.m. Arm bands will be sold from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. and single ride tickets are available from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. Scheduled events on Saturday will be a Washer Tournament at 1:00 p.m., and a Kiddie Tractor pull at 1:00 p.m. Ardy the Clown will be in the park from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Antique Tractor Pull will
begin at 2:00 p.m. A local Talent Show will be held on stage at 2:00 p.m. This is the chance for Washington County residents to “show off ” their talents. The Exhibit Hall will also open at 2:00 p.m. Rides using Single Ride Tickets will be from 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. the Venedy Band will be in concert. The Okawville American Legion Post #233 will host bingo from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. (BL-3002). Arm Bands for rides will be available from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. The evening’s free outdoor stage entertainment will be provided by Backroads / Beaucoup Bottom Band from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. On Sunday, the concession stands will open at 11:00 a.m. The parade will begin at 2:00 p.m. weather permitting, and will feature large decorated floats, bands, and other marching units. The theme of this year’s parade is “Toys on Parade”. Anyone wishing to place an entry in the parade should contact Jenny Clary at 618-599-0297.
Following the parade, the Exhibit Hall will open. Rides with single tickets will be from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. with some rides taking multiple tickets. Arm bands will be available from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The West Washington County High School Band will be in concert from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Bingo will be available from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. sponsored by the Okawville American Legion Post 233. The free outdoor entertainment will be provided by Hot Rod Johnny from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Over $6,000 in premiums will again be offered to this year’s exhibitors. Washington County residents may bring in their farm products, fruit, fancy work, canned goods, baked go o ds, photog raphy, painted pictures, and school exhibits, etc. and compete for the premiums offered. It is suggested that exhibitors enter on Friday if at all possible to avoid the rush on Saturday morning. Exhibits will be accepted from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
on Friday evening and from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The Wheat Festival will again have the free “Corn Box” for the young children where they may play with dump trucks, pails, shovels, etc. in the corn. A hand washing station is provided. The Okawville High School FFA sponsors this project. A variety of food and refreshment will be available including fish, fried chicken, grilled pork steaks, chicken strips, slaw, bratwurst, hamburgers, French fries, funnel cakes, kettle popcorn, pie, ice cream, cake, soda, water, coffee, beer, etc. No admission is charged to visit the grounds and ample parking space is available. The only parking permitted on the grounds is in the handicapped only parking lot next to the Exhibit Hall. Single Ride Tickets are $1 each or 22 for $20. Some rides will need more than one ticket. Arm bands will cost $20 each.

LINE-UP ANNOUNCED FOR 2017 MT. VERNON FALL FEST The official entertainment line-up for this year’s Mt. Vernon Fall Fest, to be held September 29 – October 1, has been announced. Friday night’s show will open with Southern Ill native country group, Savannah Rose and Atlanta Burning. They are currently recording a new album with db Records Nashville. From Murphysboro, Ill, Murphy 500 will also take the stage Friday night. The country music band has opened for artists Jon Pardi, LoCash Cowboys, Eric Church, Jamey Johnson, Mo Pitney, Clayton Anderson, Eli
Young Band and Kid Rock. Saturday’s music includes the local Southern Illinois band, Downstate Music Company. DMC plays horn driven rock, soul, disco, blues and R&B songs from the past and present. Chicago 80s Hair Rock Tribute Band, Hairbanger’s Ball, will perform Saturday, as well. Hairbanger’s Ball has sold out shows across the United States covering iconic bands such as Guns N’ Roses and Poison. Saturday’s lineup also includes alternative rock band, Blessid Union of Souls. They’ve performed on Late
Night with Conan O’Brien, Live with Regis and CBS This Morning. Some of their hit songs include “I Wanna Be There,” “Hey Leonardo (She Likes Me for Me)” and “Let Me Be the One.” Sunday’s lineup will feature blues music this year. Known in the St. Louis blues and roots scene, Big Mike Aguirre & The Blu-City AllStars will bring the St. Louis Blues, Memphis Soul and New Orleans Funk to the Fall Fest stage. Sunday’s lineup also includes The Ivas Johns Band. Chicago-born, Ivas John has played shows across the Midwest with

fellow artists Leon Russel, Guitar Shorty and Nick Moss. METAMORA COURTHOUSE CIVIL WAR ENCAMPMENT SET FOR SEPT. 16 Step back in time to 1863 at the Metamora Courthouse State Historic Site on Sat., Sept. 16 for a living history encampment from 12 noon until 7:00 p.m. The encampment will feature the 9th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Co. B, The 33rd Illinois Volunteer Band, the 10th Illinois Regimental Field Hospital, Dr. Benjamin Lyford, and the Metamora Courthouse Civil War Dancers. Camps will be open throughout the weekend, and visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of a Civil War era encampment. There will be interactive demonstrations, displays, and camps to tour throughout the day, and a Street Dance in the evening.
All activities are free, and donations are encouraged to support a project to restore the exterior windows of the Metamora Courthouse. participate in the dance). The Metamora Courthouse, built in 1845, is one of two surviving courthouses on the historic Eighth Judicial Circuit traveled by Abraham Lincoln.

JCHS NEW STORAGE BUILDING/BARN The Jefferson County Historical Society is pleased to announce the completion of our storage building located on Heritage Acres, directly behind the Village. T he He r it age Ac re s Committee has been responsible for all aspects of planning for the storage building i. e. placement of building, size, color, number of doors, etc. The Committee’s recommendations were accepted by JCHS Board of Directors and approval was given by the Board to begin construction. No More Evel Empire As I sit here burning the retinas out of my eyes trying to see the total eclipse occur (if only that darn cloud would move out of the way), my mind shifts to thoughts of Evel Knievel. Millennials do not know the man, and if any remember some of his cameos on assorted reality TV or talk shows, they saw a hobbling old man with a cane. Well, guess what, kids? That cane was filled with Wild Turkey 101. That's Evel Knievel, a guy who used to fling himself on a motorcycle over stadiums for our amusement. You know ... a real role model. I'm thinking about this as I watch the folks who filled the Southern Illinois Saluki's stadium, with e ver y p ers on rooting for the same thing — the complete blotting out of the sun from our skies. It shows us our place in the universe. Well, guess what? Evel was universally beloved, or at least looked upon with a high level of be-

New Jersey, I find the city under siege in the form of an "annual air show." Wave after wave of fighter planes fly sorties over the boardwalk, and PTSDinducing jets are buzzing the famed resort's tall buildings. Throngs of people are looking up in awe, some in fear. I scan the crowd. Some look like they're having an adrenaline rush because they keep saying how dangerous every maneuver was, as if they wanted to see an air disaster. (Others contend it was Donald Trump's show of force to this former rebel enclave, perhaps a message to the Seminoles who were dismantling the Trump Taj Mahal.) Some fans attend baseball games hoping to see nobody do anything, because that's "perfect." And then there are those who go to see hockey players fight, race-car drivers crash, quarterbacks get their legs cracked in half, and motorcyclists plunge into deep ravines filled with sharks. As for me, I prefer the sun to not be blocked by the moon, that our Air Force stays strong, motorcyclists to obey the rules of the road, but more than anything, hope to see most of next year's battles on the field of play only. Even a gourmet cook relies on shortcuts for busy work days, and since I'm not into canned soups, sauces and convenience foods, the answer for me is one of the fast and easy meals made with the recipes below.

Beef Stuffed Peppers 4 medium-size green peppers 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 (14 oz,) jar spaghetti sauce, divided 1 cup seasoned croutons, crushed
1 tsp. dried onion flakes 1/4 tsp. pepper 3/4 lb. ground chuck Grated Parmesan cheese
Cut off tops of green peppers, and remove seeds. Wash peppers. Combine egg, 3/4 cup spaghetti sauce, and next 4 ingredients, stirring well. Stuff peppers with meat mixture, and place peppers in lightly greased 8" square baking dish. Cover loosely with wax paper. Microwave at high 12 to 14 minutes, giving dish a half-turn after 6 minutes. Spoon small amount of remaining spaghetti sauce over tops of peppers; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Heat remaining spaghetti sauce, and serve with peppers. Yield: 4 servings.

Ham Roll Casserole 2 (10 oz.) packages frozen broccoli spears 8 (1 oz.) slices Swiss cheese 8 (6"x 4") slices cooked ham
1 (10¾ oz.) can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted 1/2 cup sour cream 2 tsp. Dijon mustard 2 T. sliced almonds
Place broccoli in 12-x 8-x 2-inch baking dish. Cover tightly with heavy duty plastic wrap; fold back small comer of wrap to allow steam to escape. Microwave at high 2 to 3 minutes. Rearrange spears. Cover and microwave at high an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Drain broccoli; set aside. Place 1 slice of cheese on each ham slice. Divide broccoli into 8 portions; arrange a portion on each ham slice, placing stems in center and flowerets to outside. Roll up securely, and place seam side down in greased 12-x 8-x2-inch baking dish. Combine soup, sour cream, and mustard; pour over ham rolls. Sprinkle with almonds. Cover with heavy duty plastic wrap; fold back a small corner of wrap to allow steam to escape. Microwave at high 8 to 10 minutes or until casserole is thoroughly heated, giving dish a half-turn after 5 minutes. Yield: 4 to 6 servings. Conventional Directions: Cook broccoli according to package directions. Assemble casserole; cover and bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until bubbly.

Cook noodles according to package directions; drain. Spoon into a lightly greased 12- x 8- x 2-inch baking dish. Place cream cheese in a 1-quart microwave-safe bowl; microwave at HIGH 30 to 50 seconds. Add cottage cheese and sour cream; stir well. Spread mixture over noodles. Crumble beef into a microwave-safe colander; place in a 9-inch pie plate. Cover beef with wax paper; microwave at HIGH 5 to 7 minutes or until meat is no longer pink, stirring after 3 minutes. Combine beef and spaghetti sauce; spoon over cream cheese mixture . Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Cover tightly with heavy-duty plastic wrap; fold back a small corner of wrap to allow steam to escape. Microwave at HIGH 8 to 10 minutes, giving dish a half-turn after 4 minutes. The Lamb Identity A host on K-Love radio asked, “What movie could you watch over and over again?� Callers responded with their favorite movies. I can’t pinpoint a movie I would watch over and over again, but I would most often watch classics such as “The Ten Commandments�, “Ben Hur�, or “Jesus�. I like these movies because the central theme is God. A.W. Tozer wrote, “What’s closest to your heart is what you talk about and if God is close to your heart, you will talk about him.� Jesus is the central theme of the Bible and the heart of the gospel. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, introduced him as, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!� In this passage of scripture, John identified Jesus with four significant names. (John 1:29-34) He is the Lamb of God, the Eternal Word (the Alpha and Omega), the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, and the Son of God. In these names, we discover what a wonderful Savior Jesus is.

Consider the identity of the LAMB OF GOD. The Jewish people knew the significance of the lamb. The sacrificial lamb was part of the spiritual DNA of the Jewish people and nucleus of every believer in Jesus. It speaks of the blood atonement, the covering for sin. The scriptures tell us that “without the shedding of blood there is no rem i s s i o n o f s i n .� (Hebrews 9:22) Throughout the Word of God we are given a progressive identification of “the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.� (John 1:29) THE COVERING OF ADAM AND EVE. When Adam and Eve transgressed God’s commandment, God slew an innocent animal, quite possibly a lamb, to cover their nakedness. The book of Revelation in the Bible makes much of the Lamb of God. All of heaven worships Him. “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power, wealth, wisdom, and strength, and honor and glory.� (Revelation 5:9-13) My mother recently went home to heaven, I didn’t inherit a pot of gold, but I did find a pot of pennies in the back of her closet. ANTIMICROBIAL TILES HELP CREATE SANITARY SPACES Tile can be a worthy addition to rooms with potential moisture issues or areas in a home that may routinely necessitate quick cleanup. Because they are not damaged by constant contact with water, tiled floors and walls are often found in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and entryways. Although tile is resilient, it is not impervious to the microorganisms that tend to proliferate in areas where moisture and humidity are commonplace. Microbes can grow rapidly in warm areas, especially if food is present. Mold or mildew issues also can become problematic seemingly overnight. But certain modifications can help homeowners alleviate the proliferation of microorganisms. Various manufacturers have developed their own innovative tile that contributes to cleaner, and sometimes more eco-friendly, home environments. The application of certain treatments can make
ceramic tiles even more impervious to water and moisture. Some tile may help reduce the spread of certain strains of bacteria, such as E. coli and staph, without requiring the application of potentially harsh chemical detergents. Others treatments may protect against yeast, molds and fungi that can cause stains and odors and result in the degradation of tile. Antimicrobial products inhibit the growth of microorganisms and suppress their reproduction.
