No More Evel Empire As I sit here burning the retinas out of my eyes trying to see the total eclipse occur (if only that darn cloud would move out of the way), my mind shifts to thoughts of Evel Knievel. Millennials do not know the man, and if any remember some of his cameos on assorted reality TV or talk shows, they saw a hobbling old man with a cane. Well, guess what, kids? That cane was filled with Wild Turkey 101. That's Evel Knievel, a guy who used to fling himself on a motorcycle over stadiums for our amusement. You know ... a real role model. I'm thinking about this as I watch the folks who filled the Southern Illinois Saluki's stadium, with e ver y p ers on rooting for the same thing — the complete blotting out of the sun from our skies. It shows us our place in the universe. Well, guess what? Evel was universally beloved, or at least looked upon with a high level of be-
musement. The guy would, for little or no apparent reason, jump his motorcycle over long lines of cars and through hoops of fire. He was a true "daredevil" in every sense of the word. Sometimes he would complete the jump, and people would applaud. Most other times, he would crash in spectacular fashion and the crowd would go completely berserk. He is the guy that invented the term "broke every bone in his body." But then came Snake Canyon and the "Rocket Cycle." See, he was going to jump a canyon, but what happened was that he flew halfway across said canyon — clearly not going to make it — and as luck would have it, his bike "malfunctioned" and shot out his parachutes, and the world watched as Evel floated around the canyon and into obscurity. It was over for him. To this day he doesn't exist in your spell check, which just shows you how fickle fame can be. Back in Atlantic City,
New Jersey, I find the city under siege in the form of an "annual air show." Wave after wave of fighter planes fly sorties over the boardwalk, and PTSDinducing jets are buzzing the famed resort's tall buildings. Throngs of people are looking up in awe, some in fear. I scan the crowd. Some look like they're having an adrenaline rush because they keep saying how dangerous every maneuver was, as if they wanted to see an air disaster. (Others contend it was Donald Trump's show of force to this former rebel enclave, perhaps a message to the Seminoles who were dismantling the Trump Taj Mahal.) Some fans attend baseball games hoping to see nobody do anything, because that's "perfect." And then there are those who go to see hockey players fight, race-car drivers crash, quarterbacks get their legs cracked in half, and motorcyclists plunge into deep ravines filled with sharks. As for me, I prefer the sun to not be blocked by the moon, that our Air Force stays strong, motorcyclists to obey the rules of the road, but more than anything, hope to see most of next year's battles on the field of play only. BALLOON FEST 2017 LANDOWNER AWARDS WINNERS
Landowner awards were presented to five lucky landowners as part of Balloon Fest 2017. Winners each received a $100 Gift Card from Schnucks for allowing Balloonists to land on their property during the weekend events. After the flights, pilots fill out a landowner certificate for each property on which they landed. All of the certificates were turned in to the Chamber office and from those, five names were drawn. The awards were sponsored by Schnucks, 1 1 2 9 W. B ro a d w ay, Centralia. The main purpose of the landowners committee is to cultivate good will among landowners, balloonists, and the community so everyone can enjoy this spectacular family event. Landowner participation is essential to the success of the Balloon Fest.

First up this week: DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). On September 5, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions made a statement regarding the future of the DACA Program, which is still in place, although who knows for how long! The big question is, are there any efforts in Congress to protect the Dreamers? The answer is yes. On July 20, a number of senators, both Democrats and Republicans, introduced the Dream Act of 2017. It would allow a selected number of young immigrants to earn lawful, permanent residence, and eventually American citizenship, if they meet certain requirements. None of the requirements are unreasonable, from being a long time resident who came to the U.S. before age 18, to being a graduate from high school or obtaining a GED. However, early last week President Trump made a decision to rescind DACA. Many disagree with Trump on this issue, like New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan who said Trump's decision has turned the Dreamers into "political hockey pucks." Steve Bannon's response to that was, "As much as I respect Cardinal Dolan and the bishops on doctrine, this is not doctrine... This is about the sovereignty of a nation. And in that regard, [referring to the Cardinal and the bishops] they're just another guy with an opinion." Wow!
The latest Trump move on DACA is kicking it back to Congress, which Obama did in 2012. On to the state of Illinois. What a mess. The stupidity just keeps on keeping on! I don't understand Gov. Bruce Rauner's thinking on SB31. In comes the Illinois Trust Act, aimed at protecting illegal immigrants. In lay terms it makes Illinois a sanctuary state, jeopardizing federal funding, possibly leaving Illinois in even more financial trouble. As if things aren't bad enough with the rocket scientists we have in Springfield, now we can add Rauner to that list. Rauner had committed to signing the Illinois Trust Act and did just that, making Illinois a leader in welcoming illegals and providing the strongest statewide protections in the country. So what does this mean? The bill makes every school, hospital and nursing home a sanctuary location. Local police can not comply with immigration detainers and warrants not issued by a judge. Local police can not stop, search or arrest anyone based on the person's immigration or citizenship status. According to the Illinois Review, "Laws vary from city to city, but in general, any state or local employers would be forbidden from asking the immigration status of anyone, including those who are incarcerated, those who are applying for a state identification card, those who are applying for
public assistance, and possibly even those who are applying for jobs. "This law would take effect while the state of Illinois is crumbling under the weight of its budget deficit and ongoing debt, while also making it easier for illegal immigrants to not only live in the state of Illinois, but to take jobs away from U.S. citizens who should rightfully have them." But one of the strongest points the Illinois Review makes, in my opinion, is the question and answer below: "What are illegal aliens costing the state of Illinois?" The answer: "It’s estimated that there are roughly 550,000 illegal aliens residing in the state of Illinois, at a cost to state and local taxpayers of roughly $4.6 billion annually. Nationally, it’s estimated that illegal aliens cost federal, and state and local taxpayers roughly $116 billion annually." All this leaves me wondering can our state lawmakers make any wise decisions, from bills passed to tax increases and spending sprees. The biggest problem we have in Illinois is a lack of common sense in Springfield. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. FIRST RESPONDERS APPRECIATION DAY AT CENTRALIA BUCHHEIT
On Saturday, Sept. 9 Centralia Buchheit held a First Responder Appreciation Day, hosting a free lunch for area first responders and their families and offering fun activities for children. Lunch was served outside by members of the Centralia VFW Post 2055 and American Legion Post 446. Many of the area's first responders came out and enjoyed the meal. Buchheit invited Marion County Sheriff 's Department Deputy Mark Rose to return this year with his fun and educational drug and alcohol program for children. Deputy Rose is the School Resource Officer for Marion County. He offered educational children's activities on the Buchheit parking lot Saturday, and children lined up to "walk the line" and ride a trike

most often watch classics such as “The Ten Commandments”, “Ben Hur”, or “Jesus”. I like these movies because the central theme is God. A.W. Tozer wrote, “What’s closest to your heart is what you talk about and if God is close to your heart, you will talk about him.” Jesus is the central theme of the Bible and the heart of the gospel. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, introduced him as, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” In this passage of scripture, John identified Jesus with four significant names. (John 1:29-34) He is the Lamb of God, the Eternal Word (the Alpha and Omega), the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, and the Son of God. In these names, we discover what a wonderful Savior Jesus is. Consider the identity of the LAMB OF GOD. The Jewish people knew the significance of the lamb. The sacrificial lamb was part of the spiritual DNA of the Jewish people and nucleus of every believer in Jesus. It speaks of the blood atonement, the covering for sin. The scriptures tell us that “without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.” (Hebrews 9:22) Throughout the Word of God we are given a progressive identification of “the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) THE COVERING OF ADAM AND EVE. When Adam and Eve transgressed God’s commandment, God slew an innocent animal, quite possibly a lamb, to cover their nakedness. This was the first instance of blood atonement, and a prophecy of the coming Savior. (Genesis 3:15, 21) ABRAHAM’S SACRIFICE. When God commanded Abraham to take his only son Isaac to Mt. Moriah and sacrifice him
on an altar, God saw his willingness to offer his son and God provided a ram caught in the briar bush as a substitute. What a perfect picture of God’s willingness to give His only begotten son to die on the cross. (Genesis 22; John 3:16) T H E PA S S O V E R LAMB. B efore God brought Israel out of Egyptian slavery, He instructed the Hebrews to take a lamb for each family, slay it, and paint the blood on the door posts of their homes. When the death angel passed over to kill the first-born, those who applied the blood of the l amb w e re s p are d . (Genesis 22) John the Baptist made reference to Jesus as “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, Jesus reminded His disciples of His passion at the “Last Supper”. (Matthew 26:2030) THE PROPHESIED LAMB. Isaiah prophesied of a suffering Messiah who would “bear the sins of many as a lamb led to slaughter, who would render Himself a guilt offering for sin.” (Isaiah 53) HEAVEN’S LAMB. The book of Revelation in the Bible makes much of the Lamb of God. All of heaven worships Him. “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power, wealth, wisdom, and strength, and honor and glory.” (Revelation 5:9-13) My mother recently went home to heaven, I didn’t inherit a pot of gold, but I did find a pot of pennies in the back of her closet. Each penny reads, “In God we trust.” Peter wrote, “Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your fathers but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” (I Peter 1:18- 19) Put your faith in the Lamb “who takes away the sin of the world.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL AND A CLASSIC FEEL Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks. Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding,
base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork. Used for both decoration and to increase the functionality of buildings, millwork comes in various types. Generally, millwork is fabricated in two ways. Stock millwork tends to be mass-produced commercial items. These low-cost items are interchangeable and may be widely available at retailers, including home improvement centers.
Custom millwork is a product that is custom designed and produced for individuals and special building projects. Sometimes referred to as “architectural millwork,” these pieces may be more ornate and made-to-order. Homeowners who want to match a focal point of a home or an existing style often turn to custom millwork. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, ornate millwork was largely reserved

for royalty or the very wealthy. Skilled carpenters would hand carve each piece, taking weeks to finish most projects. Eventually, millwork became more c om monpl a c e. Distinguishing one property from another today could mean turning back to the more distinctive designs of the past. Homeowners looking for ways to enhance their properties can embrace millwork to achieve a luxury feel without a sizable investment. The first step is to choose millwork that will coordinate with the era and style of a home’s existing decor. Ornate millwork in an overly modern house may seem out of place. The millwork should match the architectural theme of the home. Although some do-ityourselfers can successfully install prefabricated millwork, for custom designs and a truly seamless look, it is important to have millwork professionally installed. Individuals should research carpenters who specialize in millwork and verify their license and reputation through a consumer protection agency. Popular types of millwork include crown

Homeowners may not realize that millwork can be added to spaces of all sizes to give them an air of sophistication. Although millwork was traditionally formed from hardwoods, eco-friendly
homeowners can now find millwork crafted from synthetic materials and even reclaimed woods. Millwork can add that special touch to the interior or exterior of a home. Learn more by visiting worldmillworkalliance. com.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME AVERAGE KITCHEN REMODELING PROJECT TAKES SIX WEEKS TO COMPLETE
Living in close proximity to one’s neighbors has its benefits. But many homeowners would no doubt admit that privacy at home is a good thing. Whether homeowners are enjoying their yard in spring or summer or simply want their in-home activities to be less obvious to neighbors, their privacy is a year-round concern. If privacy is a concern, homeowners can take certain steps to ensure their homes stay or become the sanctuaries they were designed to be.
Window treatments and frosting Windows allow natural light to enter a home, but windows also enable neighbors and others to see into a home. If thieves are the ones looking inside, wide open windows present a security issue. Window treatments are an effective way to add privacy to a home. Closing curtains or blinds limits others’ ability to see inside the house. Switch to more opaque window treatments when using interior lighting more often, as gossamer draperies may still make it possible for outsiders to understand what’s going on inside the home if people and items are backlit. For those who do not want to compromise natural light, frosted windows can satisfy a desire for privacy. Windows can be purchased with frosting in place, and home improvement retailers sell various products that can create a frosted look. Fencing and perimeter plantings Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-
According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to com-
plete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens
were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.
Fencing and well-placed plantings can improve privacy for homeowners who desire it. growing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look. Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes. Pergolas and enclosed patios Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may
want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures var y from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings.

ANTIMICROBIAL TILES HELP CREATE SANITARY SPACES Tile can be a worthy addition to rooms with potential moisture issues or areas in a home that may routinely necessitate quick cleanup. Because they are not damaged by constant contact with water, tiled floors and walls are often found in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and entryways. Although tile is resilient, it is not impervious to the microorganisms that tend to proliferate in areas where moisture and humidity are commonplace. Microbes can grow rapidly in warm areas, especially if food is present. Mold or mildew issues also can become problematic seemingly overnight. But
certain modifications can help homeowners alleviate the proliferation of microorganisms. Various manufacturers have developed their own innovative tile that contributes to cleaner, and sometimes more eco-friendly, home environments. The application of certain treatments can make ceramic tiles even more impervious to water and moisture. Some tile may help reduce the spread of certain strains of bacteria, such as E. coli and staph, without requiring the application of potentially harsh chemical detergents. Others treatments may protect against yeast, molds and fungi that can cause stains and odors and result in the
FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Spring and summer may be the seasons most often associated with landscaping and lawn care, but tending to lawns and gardens is a year-round job. If lawn and
garden responsibilities dip considerably in winter, then fall is the last significant chance before the new year that homeowners will have to address the landscaping
degradation of tile. Antimicrobial products inhibit the growth of microorganisms and suppress their reproduction. For example, tiles with Microban® protection employ an antimicrobial agent built into the product during the manufacturing process. When microbes touch the product surface, the agent penetrates the cell wall of the microorganism. Other tiles are treated with micrometric particles of titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is activated by sunlight or artificial light. This causes a photocatalysis process, which is responsible for the product’s antipollution and bactericidal properties. Antimicrobial ceramic tile
can be advantageous in rooms where sanitation and hygiene are an utmost priority. This includes not only public places, but private residences. Worktops and floors where microbes can be transfered are particularly beneficial areas to install antimicrobial tile. A potential side effect of antimicrobial tile is a reduction in reliance on harsh cleaning products. Although regular washing is recommended, residents may not need to use odoriferous or strong chemical cleaners to sanitize their homes. This helps improve indoor air quality and reduce the potential contamination of the environment from chemical
runoff. Homeowners thinking of installing antimicrobial tile in their homes should discuss
their options with a tile retailer or contractor during the planning stages.
around their homes. Fall lawn care differs from spring and summer lawn care, even if the warm temperatures of summer linger into autumn. Homeowners who want their lawns to thrive year-round can take advantage of the welcoming
weather of fall to address any existing or potential issues. • Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead. • Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The
result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees. • Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Some lawn repair mixes contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well. • Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particu-
larly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing. Fall lawn care provides a great reason to spend some time in the yard before the arrival of winter.

Feral Cats' Behavior DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I've heard many times that feral cats are territorial and can't be trained to live with humans. But we have a feral cat colony in an old orange grove behind our neighborhood, and I've occasionally seen them lounging around in small groups. Some do come into neighbors' yards to eat food set out for them. Do you think the prevailing wisdom about feral cats is w rong ? — C arl in Gainesville, Florida DEAR CARL: Cats tend to be very social animals, but how they relate to other cats versus how they relate to humans is very
different. A post in the Merck Veterinary Manual gives insight into the differences in the way cats socialize depending on how they were raised. While most cats are indeed solitary hunters, and feral cats tend to be territorial, those feral cats also have a social group. The cats you saw hanging out are probably a family unit, with several females living together for protection and communal raising of their litters. Kittens within this feral family learn to socialize with other cats, and the most important period of socialization takes place as they are being weaned, at about 7 to 9 weeks of age, the Merck post explains. Because they're not exposed to humans (and are protected from exposure to other animals), feral kittens socialize differently from domestic kittens and will avoid contact with humans. From your description, it sounds as if some of the

JESUS LOVES
YOU
YOU ARE INVITED TO EMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR I have spent nearly fifty years, telling the good news, “Jesus has provided for the forgiveness of man’s sins.” Jesus provided salvation for our salvation, by dying on the cross and then was resurrected from the grave on the third day. By accepting Jesus, we can gain victory over death, hell and the grave. The choice is ours, no one can keep us from accepting this salvation. God is waiting for each of us to choose His son Jesus as our personal savior, before it is too late. If you haven’t already, you can take Jesus into your heart this very day, by doing the following things. 1. Admit you are a sinner 2. Repent of those sins. 3. Have faith in God to forgive you of those sins.
OUR MISSION
4. Pray the sinner’s prayer: “Dear God, I know that Jesus is Your Son, and that He died on the cross and was raised from the dead. I know I have sinned and need forgiveness. I am willing to turn from my sins, and receive Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Thanks you for saving me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” I would count it a privilege to help you with any ministerial needs you or your family may have. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of any assistance. LARRY P. SHELTON PASTER

1. Exalt Jesus Christ in an era when the world needs Him most. 2. Promote an aggressive effort to win the lost and dying before it is too late. 3. Equip ourselves to better reach and bring to Jesus the great harvest Jesus talked about in Matt. 9:35-38. 4. To encourage one another, to remain positive, inspired, always evangelistic so that our church may grow and minister to it’s people and our community.
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. - Matthew 16:24
