And Career

T

he days when single income households were the norm are long gone, as nowadays both Mom and Dad must work in order to make ends meet. That reality has left many women juggling the obligations of motherhood with the obligations of a successful career. Such a juggling act is seldom easy, and many mothers find themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefit of another. The following are a few tips to make balancing work and family a little easier. While the days of the singleincome household may be a thing of the past, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, clean up after the children and make it to all of their children's sporting events or other school-related events. But those responsibilities should be shared so women can ensure they're giving both their careers and families the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule where both parents tackle

such responsibilities equally so each parent knows when they have some wiggle room. For example, if your husband routinely cooks on Tuesdays, then you know you won't need to rush home on Tuesday night and you might be able to stay at the office a little later to work on a project or catch up on work. Such sharing and scheduling can considerably reduce the stress of juggling a family and a career. Juggling a family and a career is often stressful, and stress can have a very adverse effect on your health. Women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. But the American Psychological Association notes the positive impact of exercise as a means to alleviating stress, citing studies that have shown that physically active people have lower rates of anxiety and depression than people who are sedentary. It's easy to become irritable when stressed, and no mother wants to be irritable in the presence of her children.

September 20, 2017

Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is a great way to alleviate the stress of juggling a family and a career, and you can even incorporate your family into your exercise routine, going for nightly walks after dinner or playing with your children in the yard. Many mothers find staying active with their children's school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such involvement can be minimal, such as attending a monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year. Such events are typically scheduled months in advance, so you should have ample time to arrange a break from the office without neglecting your professional responsibilities. As technology has advanced, many companies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. If your company allows you to work from home, even if it's only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids, it will likely save you money on childcare, and you are certain to appreciate the opportunity to skip your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple of times per month. Looking ahead is another way to make juggling a family and a career easier. Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it's your night to cook. This can involve placing foods in a slow cooker in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it's ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home. Another way to plan ahead is to look at kids' school schedules and plan trips during the school year when school won't be in session. A three-day weekend is a perfect opportunity to plan a getaway to a nearby locale where the whole family can relax and reconnect without the pressures of daily life. n

Steps To Achieve A Better Work-Life Balance

M

any people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Living a fulfilling life often involves finding the right work-life balance, and the following tips can help make that possible. • Establish your priorities. Make a list of the things that are most important to you. Having this list put on paper can make goals more attainable. Think about the main things you want to focus

on in life and go from there. • Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a work-life balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide up the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your wellbeing. Quiet time at home in the morning can be a prime time to fit in a workout or catch up on paperwork. • Don’t procrastinate. Stick to your schedule so you don’t feel stressed and as if you are constantly rushing around. Complete one item before you move on to the next. • Communicate effectively with your bosses. Be honest with

your bosses or colleagues if you feel like work is negatively impacting your home life. Supervisors may be flexible and receptive to feedback if it means keeping good employees happy and productive. Bosses may allow you to work from home or be willing to arrange a flex schedule. • Unplug at home. When spending time at home with your loved ones, disconnect from your devices, especially those that connect you to work. Making yourself too available for work can be a detriment to your health and family. • Divide your responsibilities. Allow family members to tackle some chores or other household duties so it will free up more time to spend together. • Schedule a mental break each day. Give yourself time to perform one activity per day that you really enjoy. This will help you recharge and manage stress even further. Activities may include sports, hobbies or exercise. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication. n

A Tradition Of Caring Over 6 years ago Hillcrest Funeral Home, Cemetery and Cremation Center and Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home of Centralia became one under the Sutherland family who have been in operation close to 100 years at Hillcrest Memorial Park; Garnier and Sons had been in the business over 100 years. For decades both businesses have been owned and managed in part by hardworking, caring women and still are today. The

Sutherland family honors their working women, today as well as in the past, who have contributed years of service to area families in their time of loss. Those women involved before were Genny Owens, lovingly remembered Dorothy Sutherland, Mike Sutherland's mother; grandmother Aleida Owens–Boggs and Bea Garnier. A Brief History of Women's Rights Movements

W

omen's rights movements are primarily concerned with making the political, social, and economic status of women equal to that of men and with establishing legislative safeguards against discrimination on the basis of gender. Women's rights movements have worked in support of these aims for more than two centuries. They date to at least the first feminist publication, in 1792, entitled A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, by British writer Mary Wollstonecraft. Elizabeth Cady Stanton (seated) with Susan B. Anthony

Militant political action among women began in Britain in 1903 with the formation of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) for the right to vote. The organization was led by Emmeline Pankhurst. Women of all ages and classes demonstrated on a massive scale; the demonstrators were jailed, locked out of their meeting places, and thrown down the steps of Parliament. National divisiveness ended in a truce at the outbreak of World War I (1914) with the WSPU's decision to

support the war effort. The ensuing mobilization by the WSPU of thousands of its members for voluntary participation in the war industries and support services was a highly influential factor in overcoming government resistance to WSPU aims. The right to vote was granted in 1918; it was confined to women age 30 and above. In 1928 the voting age was lowered to 21. In the United States the first definitive position on women's rights—hitherto intermingled with antislavery issues—was taken in 1848 under the leadership of Elizabeth Cady Stanton at the Women's Rights Convention at Seneca Falls, N.Y. (see Seneca Falls Convention). In 1850 the National Women's Rights Convention was held, led by Lucy Stone, an early activist. Both groups coalesced in the formation (1863) of the Women's National Loyal League, under Susan B. Anthony. Anthony wrote and submitted in 1878 a proposed right-to-vote amendment to the Constitution. In 1890, Wyoming became the first state with women's suffrage. The movement was accelerated by the formation (1890) of the National American Women's Suffrage Association and the election (1900) of Carrie Chapman Catt as president. The ensuing campaign attracted many educated, wealthy, and influential women to the cause, with resultant political professionalism, increased funding, and the development of massive parades and demonstrations in the major cities. The Anthony amendment, as written in 1878, was ratified as the 19th Amendment and became law (continued on page 10)

in 1920. From 1920 to 1960, militancy on behalf of a single issue diffused into a number of women's political groups, such as the League of Women Voters (1920) and the National Council of Negro Women (1935). Such groups supported various types of liberal reforms related to the rights of both men and women. An equal rights amendment drafted in 1923 by the National Women's party (founded 1913) remained dormant for another 50 years. At the international level, however, the women's rights movement made progress. The preamble to the United Nations (UN) Charter (1945) referred to equal rights for women; in 1948 the UN Commission on the Status of Women was established; in 1952 the UN General Assembly held a convention on the political rights of women. The United Nations Decade for Women (1976– 85) emphasized the international scope of the women’s rights movement. Three related conferences—in Mexico City (1975); Copenhagen (1980); and Nairobi, Kenya (1985)—did the same. Beijing was host to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. That conference endorsed a nonbinding "Platform for Action." The platform would serve as a blue-

print for promoting women's rights in the 21st century. In September 2010, UN secretary-general Ban Ki Moon appointed former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet to the new UN position of undersecretarygeneral for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). During the 1960s a militant feminist trend emerged in the United States. It was encouraged by significant feminist studies, such as The Second Sex (1953) by Simone de Beauvoir and The Feminine Mystique (1963) by Betty Friedan; it was also aided by a general legislative climate favorable to minority rights and antidiscrimination movements. Militant women's groups were formed. The Women's Liberation Movement, which was social rather than political and was manifested in literature and demonstrations by radical feminists, may have raised the awareness of the nation to the prevalence of discriminatory beliefs and attitudes. More significantly, feminist political organizations arose that developed into a full feminist movement by the 1970s. These included the National Organization for Women (NOW), formed in 1966 under the leadership of Betty Friedan; the National Women's Political Caucus (1971), composed

September 20, 2017

A Brief History... (continued from page 8)

of such nationally known feminists as Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, and Gloria Steinem; the Equal Rights Amendment Ratification Council (1973); and the Coalition of Labor Union Women (1973). The force of the women's rights movement, spearheaded by NOW, was brought to bear on the major issue of the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution. The ERA was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in 1971 and by the Senate in 1972. On June 30, 1982, however, ratification of the ERA fell three states short of the 38 needed by that deadline. Later congressional efforts to reintroduce the measure have failed, although a number of states have added equalrights clauses to their constitutions. Since the 1980s the women's movement has focused on diverse issues. These include reproductive rights, that is, preserving a woman's right of choice to have an abortion against the fervent pro-life movement; sexual harassment; and the "glass ceiling" that impedes women in corporate advancement. n

Survival Tips For A

September 20, 2017

Single Working Parent B ecoming a parent may be the most important responsibility an adult ever faces, and that responsibility is even greater for single parents. Balancing work and home life as a single parent can seem like an endless juggling act. But with a strong support system and some guidance, single parents can handle the challenge. The daily responsibilities of a single parent do not differ from those of a married couple, but single parents tasked with playing the roles of both mom and dad may understandably feel overwhelmed. Here are some challenges and coping mechanisms.

which person or people you can rely on to have your back should you need a few hours of alone time or someone to pick up a sick child while you are in the middle of a business meeting. Single parents often feel a kinship with other single parents, who may be willing to pool their resources to help one another when necessary.

Explore Other Assistance. Single parents may be eligible to enroll in certain assistance programs to make their lives a little more manageable. For example, single parents may qualify for grants to return to school or low-cost housing and supplemental food allowances to ease some of the financial burden of raising a family on their own. Explore programs that may be available to you.

Establish Boundaries

Work and home life are both full-time responsibilities for single parents, and the line between work and family life often blurs for single parents wondering whether to put in more hours at the office or leave to tend to a family matter. Thanks to the financial strain of being a single parent, it's easy to put work before family. While single parents do their best to provide financially for their families, such efforts should not come at the expense of being there for their kids and providing them with emotional support. Find a balance that works for you and do your best to stick to your boundaries. Work time and family time should be

Pay Attention To Your Needs clearly distinguished.

Pick Your Battles You probably will not be able to micromanage every detail of your home and professional life, so recognize which things in life are worth fighting for and which things (kids' hairstyles or clothing choices) may just be a phase. Let trivial matters slide, as there may be more important

affairs that demand your attention.

Find Your Support System Many single parents juggle their responsibilities without much help from outside their households, but many also have a network of friends or family members on whom they can call if they need reinforcements. Figure out

Single parents should not overlook the importance of taking care of themselves. Though kids might be your top priority, that does not mean you should forgo routine health screenings or overlook the importance of getting your rest. When the juggling act gets especially difficult and stressful, create some time to relax and pamper yourself, which can have a profound impact on your mental and physical well-being. n

Straith's Jewelers

Straith's Jewelers was started in 1939 by George Straith, a watchmaker by trade. George came to Centralia to open a small jewelry store and watch repair business. The original store was across the street from the present 126 S. Locust St. address. The business grew! George fell in love with Centralia and Virginia, whom he made his wife. Today Straith's is owned by their daughter, Karen Schmitt. Karen is a Jeweler and a Gemologist, trained in store and by GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Besides Karen there are five other women working at Straith's. Straith's has a modern repair shop and jewelry store with the latest in

or parents, encouraging children to dream big is part of the job description. And while more doors are now open for women in historically male-dominated fields like science, technology and sports, for parents with daughters it’s more important than ever to drive home the “you can do anything” message. While you can’t be there all the time, when you’re together, you can do your best to steer the conversation in ways that inspire. The experts at VTech, an award-winning electronic toy manufacturer that is introducing a revolutionary range of dolls for girls called Flipsies, are offering a few tips to help parents find ways that they can empower their girls to follow their dreams and aspire for more: Talk about It Everything your child consumes, from television to books to magazines, becomes part of her consciousness. Monitor what your daughter watches and reads, and encourage her to choose

media with positive messaging, cultural value or a lesson. Together, look for shows and books that feature women following their dreams. Read the newspaper and talk about articles

illustrating women doing great things. Innovate Play Time The way children play can be very influential to their development and self-esteem, and toy makers are catching on that parents are looking for more in their children’s toys. Parents can take advantage of new trends in toy design that infuse interactive technology with classic role play to encourage engaging, imaginative play. Be a Role Model Surround your daughter with positive role models. From her basketball coach to her teacher to you, children look to grownups for guidance and often model their behavior. If possible, consider taking your daughter to your workplace or along on volunteer projects so she can see what you do during the day. Talk to her teacher about participating in a career day at school. From the toys your child plays with to the media she consumes, you can inspire your daughter’s happiness and success by directing positive messaging her way. n

Missy Ann's Bed & Bath

Have you ever looked at your dog and thought they’re having a bad hair day? Then you need to give Missy Ann’s Bed & Bath a call. My name is Melissa Stanley and I am the owner of Missy Ann’s Bed & Bath. We are a new dog grooming and boarding shop in Salem. My family and I moved here from South Carolina in the summer of 2016 and built my dog grooming shop. We opened for business on November 1 and after hearing the demand for dog boarding we built a kennel house and it opened in June of 2017. I’ve been an animal owner and lover since I was a child. In 2006, I got a Shih Tzu. When I realized how hard it was to get into the groomers, I started to groom my own dog. When I first started she was a hot mess,

Melissa Stanley but I realized I could do this and I loved it. I decided to take grooming classes with Basics and Beyond dog grooming and have been grooming dogs ever since. My favorite part of grooming is seeing the dogs running into the shop to see me with the hugs and kisses. So please, if you know of anyone with dogs let them know there is a new grooming and boarding shop in town!

did you know? Pioneering aviator and inspirational figure, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and set many other records throughout her career. Her disappearance in 1937 during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe devastated admirers across the United States and around the world. Her public career lasted less than a decade (from 1928 to 1937), but she used her fame to promote two causes dear to her: the advancement of commercial aviation and the advancement of women.

any women know that a lump, pain or some other abnormality in the breast may be indicative of breast cancer. But a rash, redness or swelling may also be linked to a rare form of breast cancer known as inflammatory breast cancer. Inflammatory breast cancer, or IBC, accounts for roughly 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers in the United States. The symptoms of IBC can differ from symptoms of other forms of breast cancer, and a rash-like appearance may be part of it, according to Healthline. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., says IBC is a fast-growing breast cancer that infiltrates the skin and lymph vessels of the breast. When IBC is present, no distinct tumor or lump can be felt and isolated in the breast. Instead, earlier symptoms include the appearance of a rash or small irritation that

may be mistaken for an insect bite. Over time, the irritation can become more red, swollen and warm. Other changes to the breast skin may occur, including nipple inversion or flattening, a pitted appearance to the skin or dimpling. This dimpling is caused by a buildup of fluid in the breast that’s due to cancer cells blocking the lymph vessels. This prevents the fluid from draining normally. IBC is a very fastmoving cancer. By the time symptoms are discovered, IBC may already have advanced to Stage 3, necessitating aggressive treatment. This usually includes a combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone treatments. Breast cancer comes in many different forms and can present in various ways. Never overlook any abnormality on or around the breast. n

the Signs of

Breast Cancer May Save

Your Life.

A

s with many types of cancer, breast cancer is most successfully treated when it is detected early. Over the previous quarter century, death rates for breast cancer have been on the decline, a positive development that Breastcancer.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing reliable, complete and up-to-date information about breast cancer, suggests is a byproduct of the heightened awareness of breast cancer over the last 25 years and the increasing emphasis placed on breast cancer screening. Understanding the symptoms of breast cancer also can help women

battle and defeat this potentially deadly disease. While the presence of any of the following symptoms does not necessarily mean breast cancer is present, the appearance of the following should be enough to inspire women and even men to visit their physicians for thorough examinations and screenings. • Changes in the feeling of the breast or nipple: A change in how the breast or nipple feels could be indicative of a larger problem. If the nipple is especially tender and this persists for an extended period of time, exercise caution and discuss this change with your physician. Similarly, if a lump or thickening develops on or near the breast or underarms, speak with your physician. Changes in appearance of the breast: A lump or thickening in the breast may affect the appearance of the breast. Another visible symptom of breast cancer is a change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast, which may appear similar to dimpling, not unlike an orange peel. Swelling or shrinking of the breast, especially when such symptoms appear on just one breast, may also indicate breast cancer. In addition, some women with breast cancer notice a sudden asymmetry with their breasts despite their breasts

previously being symmetrical, and such a development should immediately be brought to the attention of a physician. Changes in the appearance of the nipple: A nipple that appears different also may be a sign of breast cancer. Some women with breast cancer have noticed a nipple turned slightly inward or inverted prior to their breast cancer diagnosis. Skin of the nipple, as well as that of the breast and areola, which is the dark circle of skin around the nipple, may also become red, scaly or swollen when breast cancer is present. Clear or bloody discharge from the nipple: Women who are breastfeeding often notice a milky discharge from their nipple after breastfeeding. Such discharges are normal. However, when a woman who is not breastfeeding notices the presence of a clear or bloody discharge from her nipple, such a development should be brought to the attention of a physician. Any of the aforementioned signs and symptoms may be a sign of infection or the presence of a cyst, both of which are less severe than the presence of breast cancer. But the success rates of treating cancers that are detected early is such that any potential symptom of breast cancer warrants an immediate discussion with a physician. n

How To Make The Post-Maternity Leave Transition Back To Work Go Smoothly

T

he average length of maternity leave varies depending on geography, but the vast majority of new mothers take time away from work upon giving birth. Maternity leave affords women the opportunity to connect with and provide for their babies, while hopefully giving new mothers some time to recover from childbirth as well. When maternity leave ends, the transition back to work can be difficult. New mothers often struggle when the time comes to leave their babies at daycare, with a nanny or with a relative. Adding to that emotional difficulty, women also face the task of diving back into their careers and all the responsibilities that come with those careers. While returning to work after maternity leave can be difficult, the following tips might help women make the transition go more smoothly. • Give yourself a grace period. Even if you’re accustomed to going full bore at the office, the first days or even weeks after returning from maternity leave will be anything but ordinary. Give yourself a grace period upon returning to work, gradually easing back in rather than expecting to dive right in with both feet on your first day back. Not taking on too much too quickly can help you adjust to your new reality and give you time to cope with any emotions you might be feeling about leaving your child with a caregiver. • Arrange to work remotely one or two days per week. Another way to reduce the likelihood of being overwhelmed upon returning from maternity leave is to attempt to work remotely one or two days per week. Speak with your employer about making such an arrangement permanent or temporary, explaining how even working from home just a single day per week might help you calm your nerves about dropping a

child off with a caregiver. Thanks to the cost savings and advancements in technology, many employers are now more amenable to allowing staffers to work remotely. But new moms won’t know their employers’ point of view on working from home unless they ask. • Take the full leave. A study published online in the Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law found a direct link between the length of maternity leave and the risk of postpartum depression. Researchers followed more than 800 women in their first year after giving birth and found that women at six weeks, twelve weeks and six months of maternity leave had lower postpartum depression scores than their peers who returned to work. Postpartum depression can produce a host of unwanted symptoms, including a lack of interest in daily tasks and too little sleep, each of which can affect a mothers’ perfor-

mance at work. By taking the leave afforded to them by their employers and/or local laws, women may reduce their risk for postpartum depression, which can make their transitions back to work that much easier. • Take breaks during the day. Frequent, short breaks during the workday can benefit all employees, but especially new mothers returning to work after maternity leave. Returning to work can feel overwhelming, and routine breaks provide mothers with chances to catch their breath. Studies have indicated that such breaks also can reenergize workers, an especially useful benefit for new mothers who are likely not getting as much sleep as they were accustomed to prior to giving birth. Returning from maternity leave can be hard on new mothers, but there are ways to make the transition go smoothly. n

omen’s bodies are built different from men’s to accommodate the changes of pregnancy and childbirth. Although women may store fat differently and have less muscle mass than men, it’s still important that women include weight resistance training in their exercise routines. Lifting weights is an important part of staying fit. Yet many women do not pick up weights out of fear of bulking up and gaining weight. In a 2011 opinion poll conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 20 percent of women said they accomplished the CDC’s recommended 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise and two periods of strength training each week.

Contrary to popular belief, women who weight train will not turn into the bulking behemoths of competitive weight lifting. The Women’s Heart Foundation says that high levels of estrogen make it quite difficult for women to become overly muscular. When they strength train, rather, women’s muscles will improve in tone, endurance and strength instead of size. Resistance training provides an efficient way to build strength and burn calories. A study from researchers at the University of New Mexico found that the body will take between 15 minutes and 48 hours after exercise to return to a resting state. That means that a person continues to burn calories after exercising, a phenomenon known as “after-burn” or “excess post-exercise oxygen consumption.” The more intense the workout, the longer the after-burn may last. Studies performed at the Quincy, Mass., South Shore YMCA found that the average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle, but lose 3.5 pounds of fat. With that lean muscle addition, resting metabolism increases and more calories can be burned each day. The following are some additional benefits of strength training. • Reduces risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol. • Builds stronger muscles and connective tissues that can increase joint stability. • Improves the way the body processes sugar, which can help reduce the risk of diabetes. • Reduces rates of depression. A Harvard University study found that 10 weeks of strength training reduced clinical depression symptoms more successfully than standard counseling. Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable. Women with no strength training experience can consult with a personal trainer who can teach them proper strength training form. This ensures that the exercises are being done efficiently while reducing the women’s risk of injury. Qualified trainers also can keep people moving toward fitness goals. n

Sofas And More

Jeanne Berger

Sofas and More originated over six years ago after Jeanne Berger decided to go into business for herself. She said, "I have been in the customer service industry in all of my previous jobs, so this, combined with my love

for interior design along with helping customers is how Sofas and More came to life." Jeanne and co-owner Jerry Burton sell new name brand furniture for every room in your home as well as mattresses. She has everyday low prices and there are no gimmicks. She says her main brand that sells very well is Ashley Furniture. Jeanne said, "Being a native of Centralia and raising my family here, what better place to have your business than in your home town. Thank you to all of my customers for your support and for keeping your shopping local. I am looking forward to serving this area for many more years to come."
