I don't know about you, but this summer seemed especially boring in the world of sports. Save for Aaron Judge's first half, Dale Earnhardt's retirement, Kyle Bush's trifecta, Mayweather-McGregor and Federer's win at Wimbledon, there was not a lot going on. Luckily, the NFL is back. I'm not going to give any fantasy predictions, but these are three things that I'd hang my hat on for the upcoming season: Most Valuable Player: Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants New CBS color commentator Tony Romo (who booted Phil Simms from the gig) got it right when he hailed Manning in a preseason interview with New York Newsday. "He's a legend of the game, and he's still playing," Romo said. "The good ones play through [rebuilding years] and come out of it with a good team on the end. ... I think Eli is one of those." Manning is a fierce competitor, even though his demeanor seems to indicate otherwise. Nobody takes a sack as well as

Manning ... it's almost at the level of martial arts. Whenever he's hit, he rolls with it and hits the ground on his terms. That's why he never missed a start in 14 seasons. Also, it's pretty easy to see whether or not the Giants will win any game. If Eli comes out firing and making completions, hitting that window, the Giants almost always win. They're one of the Super Bowl favorites this year, and he's a huge reason why. Dud of the Year: Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas Cowboys The NFL history books are littered with tales of quarterbacks who had one great season (think Matt Leinart, Scott Mitchell or Ken O'Brien) and were never able to do it again. History shows that in order to be worth anything in this league, you have to do it at least twice. Prescott did it very well once, but now he has no running game with Ezekiel Elliott suspended for six games. Defenses can lay back and concentrate on stopping the pass. How Prescott reacts will determine whether or not the Cowboys made the right move in handing the franthe three sets. 4. Super Bowl Pick: New York Giants defeat New England Patriots In addition to the potent Manning-Beckham Jr. attack, the Giants will have one of the best, if not the best, defenses in the league. I see them passing Green Bay in the playoffs in order to get New England, a juggernaut that defies description. Looking at their schedule, it's not a stretch to see the Giants, 11-5 last year, improving to 14-2, and if they don't, it would be a MAJOR letdown. Really, the only tough teams on their schedule are the Seattle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders. The Giants will battle every NFC East team, and although a loss to the Cowboys, Redskins or Eagles away certainly could be in the cards, this team is playoff-bound if it gets its running game together. As far as New England goes? As long as Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are alive, there is no real compelling reason to choose any other team coming out of the AFC. I have them beating either the Chiefs or the rotten Raiders in the AFC championship. The rest is up to God and Tom Brady. Steffy’s Bill O'Reilly, while promoting his new book, said last week in an interview with Matt Lauer of The Today Show that there were three schools in Texas looking at changing their names. One is Madison named in honor of James Madis on, anot her is Jefferson named after Thomas Jefferson, and the last one is B enjamin Franklin. Where will this insanity stop? But I can tell you where it started, and it wasn't under the leadership of Donald J. Trump, despite what the haters have to say. But in the meantime, the craziness continued in Cahokia, IL, in the streets of St. Louis, and in other areas. So when a metro east coach steered second graders (eight year olds) to turn their backs on the American flag and take a knee to the field during the national anthem, many weren't surprised, although I was. In total disbelief, the first thought I had was more fake news, and I have to admit I hoped it was. However, on Monday morning a week ago, I did indeed find out the team did this ahead of the game at Little Devils Field in Belleville, IL. I soon found out after a number of phone calls to Cahokia public schools that it was true, but one thing I need to point out is this team was not part of the public school system, and going one step further, had nothing to do with the public school system sports program. The team was part of the Cahokia Quarterback Club. The team is being co ache d by Orl ando
Gooden. It was reported that the pregame gesture was initiated by a discussion during a practice. One of the kids asked what was going on in St. Louis. The coach said he felt it was a teaching opportunity, and to that I would have told him that it wasn't his job to teach them about social issues. (These are eight year old children, and that would be their parents' responsibility and right!) It was also pointed out to these eight year olds that in 2016 San Francisco 49ers Querterback Colin Kaepernick made kneeling during the Star Spangled Banner a form of protest. But what the coach didn't make a point to tell these children is that to date he hasn't been resigned, and in my opinion, he shouldn't be! But in the meantime, on social media there have been a lot of patriotic folks c a l l i n g f o r t h e J r. Commanches organization to be expelled from the TriCounty League. President Trump last Saturday said if any NFL players didn't stand for the national anthem, "Get that SOB off the field right now." But what happened last Sunday during the NFL football game in London? The Baltimore Ravens' Terrell Suggs and Ray Lewis lent their star power to the ongoing un-American protest by taking a knee on the field along with most of the NFL players and coaches who kneeled or locked arms. It leaves me wondering what the rest of the world thinks. I only hope and pray that they realize most of us find this behavior
un-American and unspeakable. As for me, I won't watch another NFL football game and encourage all to boycott them, because, folks, that's what peaceful protest is! This behavior of the NFL is a slap in the face to every American who has fought and paid a huge price for each and every one of us. And yes, I believe in peaceful protest as long as it doesn't disrespect what the American flag and the national anthem stand for. On to other issues. Senator John McCain is once again saying he will vote no on the new healthcare bill as well as Rand Paul. What's interesting is Rand Paul voted yes the last two times. Is the new healthcare bill going to pass this time? My prediction is no. Rand Paul also said on Meet the Press Sunday that Obama and Hillary Clinton were responsible for what's happening with Rocket Man in North Korea. He said, "What happened in Libya taught the rest of the world not to trust us." I totally disagree with the Senator. I do hold Obama and Clinton responsible for what's happened in much of the Middle East because of their actions in Libya, but this has nothing to do with the leader of North Korea's actions and threats to us and others. Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School began its 14th year with a record student body of 122 students, including one returning international student from China. For the first time in the school’s history, all four classes — grades 9-12 — have split sections in core subjects. "We are thankful for our largest enrollment ever this school year and plan for further future growth,” said Brent Rueter, who joins the staff this year as the school’s Director of Advancement and Admissions. A gradua t e o f Wa s h i n g t o n University in St. Louis, Rueter comes to CORHLS after 12 years in teaching and administration at Lutheran High School North in St. Louis. “Our desire is that any student wishing to experience the blessings of a quality Christian education would inquire about Christ Our Rock," added Rueter. CORLHS began the school year on Aug. 16. This year’s student body
includes 32 freshmen, 32 sophomores, 27 juniors and 31 seniors. The current enrollment has just under 50 percent of the students attending Lutheran congregations, with the remainder c om i n g f rom o t h e r Christian congregations or having no designated church home. More than 25 Christian congregations are represented in the student body. This year’s freshman class came from over 20 different middle/ elementary schools. The Christ Our Rock student body draws from across the broad spectrum of the four county area, with students coming from Addieville, Alma, Ashley, B eckemeyer, Carlyle, Centralia, Dix, Hoffman, Hoyleton, Irvington, Iuka, Kinmundy, Nashville, Odin, Okawville, Patoka, Sandoval, Salem, Venedy, Walnut Hill, Woodlawn and Vernon. LOW INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM BEGINS B CMW will b egin making appointments for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on Monday, October 2, 2017. Only households with persons 60 or over or households with someone who is currently receiving disability are eligible to receive an appointment at this time. Starting on November 1, 2017, households who are currently disconnected or at or below 25% on their propane or fuel oil may set up appointments. Households with children under the age of 6 may also make appointments at this
time. December 1, 2017 will be the date all other low-income eligible households can begin contacting BCMW for appointments. Eligibility is determined by providing 30 day proof of household income, utility bill in an adult household member's name and proof of social security numbers for all household members. If utilities are included in rent, you may still qualify for assistance. They will also be offering the PIPP (Percentage of Income Payment Plan) in 2018. This program allows Ameren customers to pay

To the Editor, The Trump haters do not realize that there would be no President Trump if there had been no President Obama. Our post racial president did nothing to prosecute those responsible for the high Chicago murder rate. President Obama stated that police acted stupidly, blamed guns, and denied police riot control equipment. Despite his efforts, the carnage continued relentlessly. Mu lt i c u ltu r a l i s m sounds good yet not all cultures are equal. Inca and Aztec tribes sacrificed humans to their god. Some Indians tribes expelled widows from the tribe to preserve resources for the rest of the tribe. Should these practices be
revived? For the past eight years anyone who questioned a President Obama decision was labeled racist. There are two sides to every coin but the nation has had only one side of the coin to consider. The other side of the coin is composed of bigoted, homophobic, Neanderthal, Islamophobic, neo Nazi, white supremacist haters. Name calling is not a logical argument. For eight years there has been no logical, rational discussion on anything. Our press went along with the name calling, one sided coin political charade. The press strongly supports the free press. Is there any reporter or editor who can grasp the concept of free press responsibility?

Members of the Centralia FFA Chapter recently competed at the Section 21 Horse Judging Career Development Event. Members had to judge 4 classes of horses
based on their confirmation and overall quality. As a team the chapter placed 6th out of 12 teams and Rachel Neubauer placed 6th as an individual out of 60 individuals.

NEW LAW IMPROVES ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE FOR RURAL ILLINOIS A new law on the books in Illinois will help improve access to quality healthcare across the state, but especially in under-served rural areas, according to State Senator Kyle McCarter. House Bill 313, cosponsored by Sen. McCarter, was signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Bruce Rauner. “The legislation is a big win for our region of the state,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “As the Baby Boomers get older we are witnessing a growing population of seniors who need access to quality healthcare. Illinois is showing true leadership on the healthcare issue, while the debate over healthcare access and cost issues in
Washington seem to be going nowhere.” House Bill 313 will increase access to qualified health professionals by allowing Advanced Practice Registered (APRN) nurses the authority to provide stand-alone health care services and advice to patients. Services will include writing prescriptions. The legislation requires APRNs to complete 250 hours of continuing education or training and 4,000 hours of clinical experience. Clinical hours must be in the APRN’s area of certification and attested to by a physician. "APRNs are ideal candidates to fill the need for qualified healthcare profes-
sionals to address chronic disease prevention,” said McCarter. “In downstate Illinois, we have fewer and fewer doctors, which means people have to drive farther to seek healthcare. The bottom line is the new law will expand the number of medical personnel to meet the increasing demand for health services, and at the same time, maintain quality, safe and cost-effective healthcare.” House Bill 313 is also expected to increase access to quality healthcare in densely populated urban locations, which has similar access issues. The measure received unanimous bipartisan support during the spring legislative session.

University of Illinois Extension’s Community and Economic Development team will host a free webinar, 5 Strategies for Attracting and Retaining Youth in Rural Communities on Thursday, September 28, 2017, from Noon to 1:00 p.m. There are a number of things that local government officials can do to help their communities retain youth. The webinar, presented by Pam Schallhorn, Community and Economic Development Educator, University of Illinois Extension, will be based on research done at the Center
for Rural Entrepreneurship in Lincoln, Nebraska over the last decade, and will provide strategies communities can use to get young people to stay in their communities or return after college. Pam works with community leaders, economic development professionals, Extension colleagues, and university faculty to develop programs that address local needs and mesh with broader state and national interdisciplinary initiatives. She has a background in local gove r n m e nt e d u c at i o n , finance, small business development, entrepre-
neurship, downtown redevelopment, strategic planning, poverty alleviation and diversity. She holds a master’s degree in Political Studies from the University of Illinois Springfield and a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. AREA FFA MEMBERS VOLUNTEER AT AG SAFETY DAY The C entralia FFA Chapter and Sandoval FFA Chapter recently volunteered at the annual Monsanto sponsored Agricultural Safety Day event held Thursday, Sept. 4 at Fairview Park in Centralia. The event was hosted for fifth through seventh grade students in the Centralia area. Over 500 young students were at the event to learn more about ATV safety, power take off safety, tractor safety, ladder safety, hearing safety, chemical safety, the proper way to call JULIE before digging and much more. The FFA members were able to volunteer by leading the groups of students to each station and assisting with the specific stations. While this event was for junior high students, the high school FFA members were able to learn many skills, too, that they will use in their everyday lives. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

Hunters and trappers may apply for an Illinois Bobcat Hunting and Trapping Permit online through Sept. 30. Applicants must submit a $5.00 non-refundable fee. Crockpot Meals (Part 1)

Farm life isn't easy. Farm families start early in the morning and end late in the day, especially during harvest season. It's not uncommon to see combines late in the evening — with their lights on — trying to play catch up. The same goes for the kitchen. Early, hearty breakfast is common, plus packed lunches as well as late dinners. A lot of times crock pot cooking comes in handy. It's ready when the family is ready. The best part is you can prepare and start it early. Some of my favorites meals are below, and don't miss next week's column for more recipes.
If you want something different, this house has personality! New England Chuck Roast 1 (3 lb.) beef chuck roast 1 tsp. monosodium glutamate 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 2 onions, cut into quarters 4 carrots, cut into quarters Sauce: 3 T. butter or margarine 1 T. instant minced onion 2 T. flour
1 stalk celery, cut into 8 chunks 1 bay leaf 2 T. vinegar 5 cups water 1 small cabbage cut into wedges
1½ cups reserved beef broth 2 T. prepared horseradish 1/2 tsp. salt
Sprinkle meat with seasonings. Place onions, carrots, and celery in slow-cooking pot. Top with meat. Add bay leaf, vinegar and water. Cover pot and cook on low for 5 to 7 hours or until meat is tender. Remove meat; turn to high. Add cabbage wedges; cover and cook on high for 15 to 20 minutes or until cabbage is done. Meanwhile melt butter in saucepan. Stir in instant onion and flour. Drain 1½ cups broth out of slowcooking pot. Pour broth, horseradish and salt into saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and smooth. Serve sauce with roast and vegetables. Makes 6 servings.

2 lbs. beef stew meat, cut into 1½" cubes 1/2 cup flour 2 T.. oil 1 bay leaf 1 T. Worcestershire sauce 1 onion, chopped 1 cup beef bouillon 1/4 tsp. pepper 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar
6 carrots, peeled and sliced or quartered 1 cup sliced celery 4 potatoes, peeled and cut into eighths 12 small white onions 2 medium turnips, peeled and quartered (optional) 4 cups water 1 cup cooked okra (optional)
Coat meat with flour; set excess flour aside. In large skillet or slow-cooking pot with-browning unit, heat oil. Brown meat on all sides. In slow-cooking pot, combine browned beef, bay leaf, Worcestershire sauce, chopped onion, bouillon, pepper, salt, sugar, and vegetables. Pour water over all. Cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours. Turn control on high. Thicken with flour left over from coating (about 1/4 cup) dissolved in a small amount of water. Add okra if desired. Cover and cook on high 10 to 15 minutes or until slightly thickened. Makes 6–8 servings.
Swedish Cabbage Rolls 12 large cabbage leaves 1 beaten egg 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper
1 lb. lean ground beef 1 cup cooked rice 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce 1 T. brown sugar 1 T. lemon juice 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
Immerse cabbage leaves in large kettle of boiling water for about 3 minutes or until limp; drain. Combine egg, milk, onion, salt, pepper, beef, and cooked rice. Place about 1/4 cup meat mixture in center of each leaf; fold in sides and roll ends over meat. Place in slow-cooking pot. Combine tomato sauce with brown sugar, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour over cabbage rolls. Cover and cook on low 7 to 9 hours. Makes 6 servings.

The Signs of the End We look at all the calamities and upheaval sweeping the world. Worldwide wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, erupting volcanoes, wars, terrorist attacks, famines, and violence wreaking havoc, devastating families, communities, and countries. Signs in the sky are getting people’s attention — blood red moons, total solar eclipse, and the unusual alignment of the stars and planets — are causing many people to ask questions like: “What’s going on?” “Is this the judgment of God?” While I hesitate to say these things are the judgment of God, I do believe that Jesus said these things would be signs of the end times and his soon return. “And there shall be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them for fear and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth; for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And they shall see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great power and great glory.” (Luke 21:25-27) Don’t ignore or hide your head in the sand, but look, learn, and lean on Jesus

when you see these things begin to happen. LOOK UP! When we begin to see these signs of the end times Jesus said to look up. Don’t look down in depression or fear. “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws nigh.” (Luke 21:28) For believers in Jesus there is the blessed hope of salvation and eternity in heaven to look forward to. Are you looking up in anticipation of the Savior’s return? (Hebrews 9:28) LOOK AT THE FIG TREE! Jesus urged us to look at the fig tree as a sign of his return. The fig tree in scripture is a symbol of Israel. For centuries Israel was scattered throughout the world. But God brought them back to the land and, in 1948, Israel became a nation again. “Behold the fig tree and all the trees; When they now shoot forth, you see and know . . . that summer is now nigh
at hand . . . When you see these things . . . know the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.” (Luke 21:29-33) Israel is a central focus of God’s prophetic timetable. LOOK INWARD! Are you ready to meet God when Jesus returns? “And take heed to your selves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness and cares of this life and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.” (Luke 21:3435) Jesus taught that multitudes will be surprised at his coming and unprepared. They will be left behind when the saints are caught up to heaven. They will go through tribulations that are coming upon the earth. John tells how to be ready at Christ’s appearing. “And everyman that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.” (I John 3:2-3; 1:9) L O O K AT YO U R ESCAPE PLAN! The gospel is more than an escape plan, it is a personal relationship with the living God. But Jesus provides an escape from the wrath of God to come on the face of the earth, on those who refuse to accept the Son of God as Savior and Lord.
Our son Chip and his son Elijah are firefighters. They always wear protective gear and have an escape plan before going into a burning fire. Disaster planning now requires that pets be considered in cities' evacuation plans. Shelters in hurricane-prone areas have developed disaster plans that include ways to effectively manage an influx of hundreds of animals. Ahead of Harvey, many shelters in the evacuation zones transferred their adoptable occupants to other states to make room for rescued pets. Local shelters are networking more closely with each other, with national rescue groups and with the public (thanks in part to social media like Twitter) to coordinate transfer of animals to overflow shelters. For example, one shelter, Austin Pets Alive!, is taking in pets by the truckload and for several days
