RED CROSS URGES DONORS OF ALL BLOOD TYPES: MAINTAIN DIVERSE SUPPLY

One doesn’t know, till one is a bit at odds with the world, how much one’s friends who believe in one rather generously, mean to one. –D.H. Lawrence

The American Red Cross urges eligible donors of all races and ethnicities to give blood to help ensure a diverse blood supply for patients in need. Some blood types are unique to certain racial and ethnic groups, so a diverse blood supply is important to meeting the medical needs of an increasingly diverse patient population. Patients who need repeated transfusions, like 1 1 - y e a r - o l d Ty m i a McCullough who has sickle cell disease, must have blood that is matched very closely. Patients are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity. Donors of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as all blood types, are needed to help patients fight sickle cell disease,

speakOUT letters to the editor

Your Rights, My Rights Dear Editor, I served more than 22 years in military uniform to preserve the freedoms and rights that the citizens of the United States of America enjoy, and that we continue to enjoy after several wars and conflicts involving our nation just in the past century. One of those freedoms we protected — and that those serving today continue to protect — is the right to show your disrespect for our American Flag and our National Anthem — two symbols and signs that have joined us together in times of strife, such as after our nation became embroiled in the worldwide conflict we now know as World War I; after the 1941 Japanese attack on our territory, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, that embroiled us in the fight for our nation’s survival in World War II; and after the terrorist attacks on United States soil on Sept. 11, 2001. In a show of unison as a nation and a show of strength to those who would wipe us off the face of the earth, citizens flew the American Flag to a much greater extent than for previous years, especially during and after the Vietnam Conflict. When the American Flag passed by in a parade, or the National Anthem was played at a sports

venue, we proudly stood up straight to show our love of our country. We all know the United States isn’t perfect. There is strife and discord over racial, religious, sexual preference, and other issues, but I don’t know of any other nation in which the citizens, immigrants and even illegal aliens enjoy the freedoms and rights that we enjoy in this nation. Why do so many sacrifice to come here?! So even though I served my country to protect your right to show disrespect for the Flag and the National Anthem, that doesn’t mean that I approve of your disrespectful actions. When our military men and women came home from Europe and the Pacific after fighting — many voluntarily — to preserve the freedoms of our great nation during World War II, they were welcomed and treated as the heroes and heroines they were. Unfortunately, sometime since then, athletes have become the heroes that our young people worship — yes, worship! But what have they accomplished that is heroic? The professional athletes use their Godgiven talents to play a game for which they are very highly paid! What’s heroic about that? Even college athletes are rewarded

with athletic scholarships, so they have a much smaller college debt than most when they graduate. We certainly hope that this disrespectful trend does not flood down to the college and high school levels — and perhaps it’s already too late for that hope, as “gravity” follows the path of least resistance. It takes courage to buck a trend that does nothing to heal what’s wrong with this country while refusing to recognize that there is anything right with this country! Yes, it’s your right to show your disrespect — but it’s my right to choose to not watch teams that show that disrespect.

You Asked for It After Floyd Mayweather Jr. won his 50th fight, a few us at Sporting View headquarters wondered aloud: Who from history could have beaten him? Not Hearns, and not Hagler, we decided, but we all agreed that Sugar Ray Leonard would be up to the task. That begged the question: What other "superfights" were out there that we'd pay to see? Here's an abridged version of what we came up with: Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs, 5-foot-10, 71-inch reach) vs. Joe Frazier (324-1, 27 KOs, 5-foot-11, 73-inch reach) We thought about bringing in Sonny Liston to fight Tyson, but decided that "Smokin'" Joe Frazier would provide better optics. Frazier would come in low, ducking and weaving, swinging his left hook with bad intentions, hoping to catch Tyson in the ear behind his famous Cus D'Amato-inspired "peek-aboo" defense. Unfortunately for Joe, it's unlikely it would have worked. When Tyson was at his peak, he was even scarier than Foreman or Liston at their meanest. Tyson would walk Frazier

down, Frazier would be swinging from his heels and Tyson would lower the boom by launching him off the floor with one of his trademark combinations that ended with an uppercut. Result: Tyson by KO in the early rounds Muhammad Ali (56-5, 37 KOs, 6-foot-3, 78-inch reach) vs. Joe Louis (66-3, 52 KOs, 6-foot-2, 76-inch reach) There are four zones in boxing your opponent. The first zone is when you're body to body, maybe in the clinch, and you're trading blows on the inside, usually uppercuts that sting but don't have enough power behind them to knock you out. The second zone is when you're a foot or two away from the other boxer and you're really wheeling and dealing ... hooks can land, combinations are king. The third zone is what is called "the pocket." This is where the boxer has his reach calibrated to the opponent's head. The fourth zone is from way outside, keeping your distance from your foe, a launching ground for the boxer to come in with overhead power punches. Probably more than any heavyweight boxer in

His shots were deadly accurate and he would hit you with combinations that seemed otherworldly and with lots of power because he knew how to plant his feet. But Louis would have a major problem against Ali. During an inter view between the two, Ali made one thing clear: "You're too slow, Joe." And he was right. Against Louis, Ali would have danced out of any trouble spots, and would have dominated

both the third and fourth zones. Their fight may have gone the distance, but there is little doubt that Ali's speed would have neutralized Louis' power (Ali had a great chin), and he would have been the busier puncher. KC, SCIGA AND AREA INDUSTRIES PARTNER TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE ILLINOIS MANUFACTURING MONTH O c t o b e r i s Manufacturing Month in Illinois. Kaskaskia College, the South Central Illinois Growth Alliance (SCIGA) and members of manufacturing industry have joined together to open their doors to several of the area high schools with the goal of promoting careers in the manufacturing industry. Several tours of major manufacturers are to take place throughout the Kaskaskia College district throughout the month of October, with the goal of highlighting the manufacturing processes, as well as to bring awareness to the vocational skills gap within the industry and to highlight the above average wages and career opportunities available. The manufacturing industry as a whole is suffering from a lack of trained labor, and according to the Illinois Manufacturing Association (IMA) the skills gap and lack of trained labor force is only going to worsen over the next ten years. According to the IMA website: “A massive skills gap threatens to leave over two million manufacturing jobs unfilled over the next decade. We need our youth to start seeing manufacturing as an exciting career option.”

According to Kaskaskia Dean of Career and Technical Education, George Evans “It is the goal of these various manufacturing tours within the Kaskaskia College district to provide junior high and high school faculty and staff with a first person view of the manufacturing processes of the various plants. We want them to see for themselves that the manufacturing industry has changed over the past 50 years and is very organized, technical and fast paced. We also want to highlight the stability and above average wages that are associated with within these careers. It is important for today’s youth to understand that they do not have to spend a ton of money to earn an education or certification to become successful and earn a great salary. A great career is available within their own district, and training is also available at a minimal cost.” Kaskaskia College kicked off the celebration month by offering tours of the Crisp Technology Center to the area high school guidance counselors. An in-depth tour of t he c ol l e ge s H VAC , We l d i n g , i n d u s t r i a l Technology and Carpentry programs were given, to

include visual tours of the brand new classrooms and working labs dedicated to each program. TBA: Tour of Schutt Sports, Americana, Jarco and North American Lighting by faculty and staff of Salem High School and students and staff of Sandoval High School. GIRL SCOUTS FALL NUT, CANDY & MAGAZINE PRODUCT PROGRAM RUNS SEPT. 30 THROUGH OCT. 21 Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) will kick off its 2017 Nut, Candy and Magazine Product Program on Sept. 30 and it will continue until Oct. 21. GSSI’s Nut, Candy and Magazine Product Program helps girls raise funds for troop activities, as well as gives them hands-on experience with five skills linked to leadership and financial literacy: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. “Girl Scout Product Programs help troops have fun and meaningful experiences,” said Kelly Jansen, GSSI Director of Product Program. “All of the things they love to do, like taking trips, learning STEM skills, camping and doing service projects — community support helps makes these activities possible. Girls

really do take the lead! From setting goals, to working on their entrepreneurial skills, to managing money and then making a budget for troop funds — girls are learning by doing every step of the way.” During the Nut, Candy and Magazine Product Program, girls offer customers gourmet candy, nuts and snack mixes, as well as subscriptions to popular magazines. These items make great gifts and are delivered in time for the holiday season. All proceeds stay within southern Illinois to benefit area girls through leadership-building programs, volunteer training, camp maintenance and financial assistance. To find a participating Girl Scout in your area, please call 800.348.6858 or e-mail customercare@ gsofsi.org.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a high-capacity Girl Scout council serving approximately 12,400 girls and engaging 5,000 adult volunteers in 40 ½ counties in Southern Illinois. GSSI Mission: Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. The Girl Scouts organization is the world's largest leadership development organization for girls. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives — like strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork.

here are a million good reasons to consider adopting a dog during American Humane’s yearly “Adopt-a-Dog Month®” in October – in fact, it’s a lot more than that. Each year, an estimated 3-4 million animals waiting in shelters for someone to give them a safe, loving home never find a hero to adopt them and, tragically, are euthanized. If you’re thinking about getting a dog, be a hero and consider adopting a rescue animal or a dog from your local shelter. You’ll be saving a life and greatly improving yours. Dogs are amazing, supportive, and heroic companions who can make a huge difference in your world as a best friend, an exercise buddy, someone who can be trained to provide animal-assisted therapy and help those with challenges they may face, or simply be a fuzzy face to greet you after a hard day at work.

American Humane established Adopt-A-Dog Month® in October 1981 as an annual event to encourage people to save lives and enhance their own lives by adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group. Thirtytwo years later, that message is as strong, true and important as ever, as millions of dogs in shelters await adoption every year. Ways to Celebrate! Adopt from a shelter or rescue group: When you’re ready to open your heart and home to a new best friend, adopt from your local animal shelter or rescue group. Spay or neuter your dog: Have your dog spayed or neutered, thus preventing the possibility of unexpected, and potentially unwanted, puppies.

ID your pet: By putting identification on your dog, either in the form of a tag, a microchip or both, you will reduce the possibility that your pet will become one of the presumably “homeless” dogs that end up at your local shelter. Only 15-20 percent of dogs who enter a shelter are reunited with their owners. Support your local shelter: Show the pets at your local shelter or rescue group that you care by donating time, money or supplies like pet food, leashes, beds and toys.

Do Indoor Cats Need All Those Shots? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our cat's paws never touch the ground outside. "Dale" is an indoor cat, through and through. He doesn't even try to go outdoors, although he does like to watch the world go by from his perch in the front-room window. With that in mind, why does he have to get all of those vaccinations? Most are to protect him from diseases acquired from other cats, like FIV. He's never going to see another cat, so why should I protect him from a disease he likely won't get? — Budget-Minded Papa

DEAR PAPA: Vaccinating your cat against "improbable" diseases, ones that he seems unlikely to be exposed to, may seem like a waste of mone y. However, vaccines protect against the possibility of the improbable actually happening. Under normal circumstances, Dale may never be at risk of contracting feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), rabies, feline leukemia or other illnesses. But we can't see the future, and things don't always stay normal. Let's say that you and Dale move to a new home. There's a chance that during the move, Dale could escape from his carrier, get confused or lost and be stuck outdoors for a few days until you find him. Or, perhaps a natural disaster occurs where you and Dale have to evacuate, and he must

L ast Friday Gov. Rauner signed into law House Bill 40 that pertains to forcing the taxpayers of Illinois to spend an estimated $20 million to end the lives of thousands of innocent unborn children through Medicaid — paid abortion services. In light of this action, and on top of his recent move to make Illinois a sanctuary state with the signing of Senate Bill 31 providing more protection to illegal aliens, he isn't who I thought he was, and is a far cry from it! Let me be the first to tell you (before anyone reminds me) that I supported Rauner for Governor in the race against incumbent Pat Quinn. But if he truly runs for Governor again, I can't and won't support him this time around. But with that said, neither can I support the Democratic candidate J. B. Pritzker who has based the core of his campaign on attacking President Trump. I can only hope we have decent candidates to choose from. However, with that said, I'm not alone in my disappointment with Gov. Bruce Rauner. State Senator Kyle McCarter had the following to say: “I am extremely disappointed in the Governor’s decision. The new law requires abortions be paid for with tax dollars for any reason, including sex, race, or imperfection, throughout the full nine months of pregnancy. "HB40 is a radical change to accepted public policy in Illinois and throughout the United States. "It overturns decades of Illinois public policy not to pay for abortions under the Medicaid assistance program except

for life of the mother. Nor have Illinois taxpayers had to pay for abortions under the State Employees Group Insurance Act of 1971. "Survey after survey has shown that a clear majority of Illinoisans, even those who say they are pro-choice, do not want their tax dollars paying for abortions. We also know that the number of abortions will increase under this new law. " The Governor’s decision is completely opposite of the platform adopted by the Illinois Republican Party that elected him. He has disgraced the party and the citizens of Illinois. In my opinion, he should not run for re-election.” ——————— From the office of State Representative John Cavaletto came the following statement: “My faith and moral compass tell me that life begins at conception and that every life is precious. I worked with special needs children since I was in school at summer camps to help give them a more fulfilling life. Those camps and programs were used to help develop what has become known as the Special Olympics. Also, I have worked to help keep open the Murray Developmental Center that serves people who need constant care because they too are valuable human beings. I’m disappointed with the actions of the governor today to expand spending public dollars on a procedure that I oppose and is opposed by the majority of people in my district. I will work with other conservatives to draft legislation and reverse this new law.” ———————

In addition to what the State Representative said, I have to point out another issue made clear by Sen. McCarter when he said, "The new law removes all prohibitions of using tax dollars for f u n d i n g a b or t i on s throughout the full nine months of pregnancy and for any reason. And the law also forces taxpayers to pay for abortions under State Employees Group Insurance." Sen. McCarter reminded me of a notable quote — food for thought for all: "Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.” — Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910 – 1997); Roman Catholic nun and missionary known for her work with the poor; Founder of Missionaries of Charity religious congregation with more than 5,600 religious members serving in more than 130 countries. ——————— HB40 is a radical betrayal; Rauner should not run for re-election. In closing, it is of my opinion that ALL LIVES MATTER, including innocent unborn babies. I can only say, in addition to God Bless America, God Help America when we condone the murder of the unborn. Please keep the Las Vegas victims in your thoughts and prayers. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders Hoping for Day Without hope one cannot survive. In the book "Unbroken" by Laura Hildebrand, Olympian athlete and World War II Prisoner of War survivor Louie Zamperina gives a riveting account of his airplane being shot down by the Japanese, crashing in the sea and spending weeks in a life raft fighting off sharks and Japanese fighter pilots. Louie and his pilot friend kept their hope up by keeping their mind active, singing, and praying. The third man in the raft lost hope and died. After many miraculous escapes, Louie Zamperina came to believe in God and promised God he would serve Him, even though it took some hard years to bring him to make a commitment to Christ. After much prayer Louie claims he saw the angels of God in the clouds and had assurance of his rescue. Louie and the pilot were captured by the Japanese and endured horrible conditions and torture. Many POWs lost hope and gave up survival. "Unbroken" is the true story of those who hoped against hope and survived horrible situations. God's Word reveals these keys to abundant, enaduring life, "Now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (I Corinthians 13:13) Sandwiched between faith and love is hope. Solomon said,

"Hope deferred makes the heart sick." (Proverbs 13:12) How can we keep hope alive? The apostle Paul was at the end of his ministry. He was a prisoner sailing to Rome to stand trial before Caesar. In Acts 27 we read the account of their encounter of a storm at sea. "And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed . . . They lightened the ship . . . and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up." (Acts 27:18-20) But the apostle Paul gave a word of hope. If you are at a midnight hour hoping for day, apply these seven points from Paul's account — take hope! PRAY! Paul and the ship's crew fasted for 14 days. Paul sought God in prayer. Prayer admits our dependence on God. "They dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for day." (Acts 27:21, 29) Prayer brings God's peace. (Philippians 4:6-7) We have his assurance, "Cast all your cares on Him for He cares for you." (I Peter 5:6-7) BELIEVE GOD! An angel appeared to Paul and assured him of God's intervention. Paul encouraged them, "Therefore, take heart for I believe God." (Acts 27:25) Believe God's Word. REMEMBER WHO YOU BELONG TO AND SERVE! If you are a child of God you are not alone. He has your back. God has a purpose for your life and it cannot be

Crockpot Meals (Part 2) Last week it was all about farm families, but the same holds true for any busy home life. There is always homework to be done, ball practice, band practice, and all sorts of after school functions. Crock pot cooking comes in handy. Just put it on in the morning and dish it up when everyone's ready, even if they have different schedules.

Herbed Pork Roast 1 (4 to 7 lb.) fresh ham or pork leg* 2 cups water 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. thyme, crumbled

1 tsp. ground sage 1 tsp. grated lemon peel 1 T. lemon juice 1 clove garlic

Remove skin and excess fat from pork. Place in large bowl. Pour water over; add remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate several hours or overnight. Turn meat two or three times if possible. Transfer meat and marinade to slow-cooking pot. Cover and cook on low for 10 to 12 hours or until meat is done. If possible, turn meat in pot once during cooking. Drain and slice. Makes 8 servings. *The larger roast fits a 4½ quart or larger slow-cooking pot. If you have a smaller slow-cooking pot, have the butcher bone the roast or buy a smaller one.

Chicken & Herb Dumplings 1 (2½ to 3 lb.) chicken, cut up 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 2 whole cloves 8 to 10 small white onions 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 tsp. powdered marjoram

1/4 tsp. powdered thyme 1 bay leaf 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 cup dairy sour cream 1 cup packaged biscuit mix 1 T. chopped parsley 6 T. milk

Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper; place in slow-cooking pot. Insert cloves in one onion. Put all onions in pot. Add garlic, marjoram, thyme, bay leaf, and wine. Cover and cook on low 5 to 6 hours. Remove bay leaf and cloves. Stir in sour cream. Turn control to high. Combine biscuit mix with parsley; stir milk into biscuit mix with fork until well moistened. Drop dumplings from teaspoon around edge of pot. Cover and cook on high for 30 minutes. Makes 5 servings.

Southwestern Beef & Beans 1 lb. dried pinto beans 6 cups cold water 1/2 lb. salt pork, cut up 1 lb. lean chuck steak, cut into 1" cubes 1 red chili pepper or 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper

1 medium onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste 1½ T. chili powder 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cumin seed 1/2 tsp. marjoram leaves

Soak beans in water overnight. Brown salt pork in skillet or slow-cooking pot with browning unit. In slow-cooking pot, combine soaked beans (with water), browned pork, and remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 9 to 10 hours. Makes 8 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. NEW LAW WILL IMPROVE HEALTHCARE ACCESS Legislation signed into law September 20 will improve access to quality healthcare in Illinois, which is especially critical for southern Illinois, according to State Sen. Kyle McCarter. “House Bill 313 is a big win for rural Illinois and especially for my district because we have a growing population of

seniors who need access to quality healthcare,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “In the midst of the national debate on healthcare, which seems to be going nowhere as far as increasing access and containing costs, Illinois is showing true leadership.” Cosponsored by Senator McCarter, House

Bill 313 allows Advanced Practice Registered (APRN) nurses the authority to provide standalone health care services and advice to patients, including writing prescriptions for chronic ailments. “Typical health care issues today are related to chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension,

arthritis and heart disease. They are ideal candidates to fill the need for qualified healthcare professionals to address chronic disease prevention,” said McCarter. “The bottom line is the new law will expand the number of medical personnel to meet the increasing demand for health services, and at the same

time, maintain quality, safe and cost-effective healthcare.” The legislation requires APRNs to complete 250 hours of continuing education or training and 4,000 hours of clinical experience. Clinical hours must be in the APRN’s area of certification and attested to by a physician. According to a 2013 study by the Health & Medicine Policy Research Group of Chicago, there

lation wears a partial denture. The Canadian D enture & Impl ant Centres says that 16 percent of the population wear dentures. Removable dentures require care to keep them clean and in good repair. Servicing dentures also helps ensure wearers’ mouths stay healthy. Follow these guidelines to keep dentures clean. • Handle with care. Dentures are strong, but they are not impervious to damage. Treat them with care while handling, being sure not to bend or damage any clasps when cleaning, and try not to drop the dentures. When handling dentures, Colgate recommends standing over a folded towel or basin of water for added protection. • Brush daily. False teeth need to be brushed, so don’t trade in your toothbrush just yet. Brushing will help remove food deposits and prevent staining. • Take a break. Remove dentures before going to bed and soak the dentures in warm water or special denture cleansers. Removing dentures for six to eight hours allows tissue inside the mouth to recover. is a great need for Illinois to expand the number of healthcare providers, especially in underserved areas, such as densely populated urban locations and rural counties. and tartar. The Mayo Clinic notes that most dentures need to remain moist to keep their shape, so do not allow them to dry out. • Clean your mouth. Whi le dentures are removed, use gauze or a soft toothbrush to clean the tongue, palate and cheeks. If you still have any natural teeth, use a softbristled brush to cleanse. Always rinse dentures before returning them to your mouth. • Schedule regular dental visits. Dentists can advise how frequently to have dentures checked for fit and professional cleaning. Loose dentures can cause sores and infection, so it’s best to address any issues regarding fitting promptly. Dentists also will inspect the inside of the mouth for signs of disease or irritation. • Eat healthy foods. Make sure to eat a wellbalanced diet to keep the body and mouth healthy. Cut up hard foods like fresh fruits and vegetables if dentures are impacting your ability to eat these foods. People of all ages rely on partial or complete dentures to maintain their smiles. Routine care is necessary to keep the dentures intact and mouths healthy.

MAKING TIME FOR EXERCISE

You can fit exercise into your schedule by walking or jogging with your dog. Then you are taking care of yourself as well as him. Diet and exercise are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. While even the busiest men and women can find ways to eat healthy, finding time to exercise can be more difficult.

Ac c o r d i n g t o t h e President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, regular physical activity can prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and stroke, which are the three leading causes of health-related death in the United States. In addition, men and women who are not physically active are at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise helps people control their weight while promoting bone, muscle and joint health. While the benefits of regular exercise are substantial, finding the time for daily exercise is not always so easy. The following are a handful of strategies men and women can employ as they attempt to make more time in their days to exercise.

Reexamine Your Free Time Few adults, and especially those juggling families and careers, have an abundance of free time. But reexamining the ways you are spending your free time may help you uncover some moments for daily exercise. The Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition notes that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 need at least two and a half hours each week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. While that may seem like a lot, it’s only slightly more than 20 minutes per day. It helps to supplement such aerobic activity with some strengthtraining activities at least two days per weeks. Try waking up 20 to 30 minutes earlier each day, using that time to hit the treadmill or jog around the neighborhood. You likely won’t be

to connect remotely to office servers, to work while they exercise. Bring your smartphone or tablet with you when you work out on the elliptical or jog on the treadmill. Reduce Your Sedentary Time A study from Australian researchers found that people who regularly break up their sedentary time, including the hours they sit behind their desk at the office, with movement had healthier waist circumferences, body mass indexes and triglycerides than those who did not. While hourly breaks to walk around the office might not seem like exercise, such breaks can benefit your long-term health.

affected by waking up earlier, and you won’t need to alter your existing schedule for the rest of the day, either. If mornings aren’t your thing, make better use of your lunch hour, going for a jog or visiting your company’s exercise facilities if that option is available to you. Work While You Exercise Technology has made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office even when you are nowhere near your desk. Men and women who can’t seem to find time to exercise often cite the demands of their job as the primary reason behind their inactivity, but those same individuals can Get Creative use the technology at their Many people associate disposal, be it smartphones that allow them to keep daily exercise with private track of work emails or gyms, and while gyms can tablets that make it possible serve as excellent motiva-

tors and great places to get full-body workouts, time involved in driving to and from the gym can make it difficult to commit to gym memberships. But you don’t need a gym membership to live a healthy lifestyle. When possible, take the stairs instead of an elevator and park further away from your office door so you get a small cardiovascular workout on your way into and out of the office. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, walk or bike around your neighborhood. Such simple gestures may seem insignificant, but the more creative ways you find to exercise each day, the more beneficial such efforts become. While there is no way to create more time in the day, men and women can employ several strategies to make more time for daily exercise.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Expect to hear more about an offer that has piqued your interest. You earn respect for insisting on solid facts, not just a fancy talk about potential opportunities. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) What seemed to be a reasonable workplace request might need to be defended. Don’t fret. You have both the facts and a surprise ally on your side. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A bit of capriciousness might be just what you need. Plan to kick up your heels in a round of fun and games with family and friends this weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Although some of your plans might have to be put on hold, things do begin to take a turn for the better by midweek. Your financial crunch also eases. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your financial picture begins to brighten by week’s end. There also are favorable changes in your personal life. Someone you care for has good news to report. BORN THIS WEEK: You seek balance, but not at the expense of justice. You would make a fine judge. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

stupidity. • In the 9th century, a Norseman named Sigurd Eysteinsson earned the name Sigurd the Mighty while helping to lead the Viking conquest of what is now northern Scotland. As part of a continuing effort to expand his Scottish conquest, Sigurd challenged a native ruler, Mael Brigte the Bucktoothed, to a battle. Each leader was supposed

to bring 40 men to the battle, but Sigurd broke his own rule and brought 80 warriors. Unsurprisingly, Brigte lost. After beheading his defeated foe, Sigurd displayed Brigte's head on his saddle as a trophy of war. He got his just desserts in the end, though; as he rode, Sigurd's leg was scratched by Brigte's buck teeth. The seemingly insignificant wound festered, and Sigurd the Mighty was killed by the infection. • You may already know that seahorses mate for life. You may not be aware, though, that as they swim, they keep their tails linked together. • Those who study such

things say that Napoleon Bonaparte was partial to cashmere underwear. • Beards may be trendy these days, but if you prefer the clean-shaven look, you belong to a group that goes back further than you think. Cave art dating back to 10,000 B.C.E. depicts grown men with no beards. • The ostrich is the world's only two-toed bird.. *** Thought for the Day: “The world is changed not by the self-regarding, but by men and women prepared to make fools of themselves.” — P.D.
