THE TIME IS RIPE TO TRANSFORM AGRICULTURE AND FEED THE WORLD Political and agricultural leaders gather at the University of Illinois today to see transformative work by scientists in the Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE) research project, which has already demonstrated yield increases of 20 percent. A $45 million, five-year reinvestment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR), and the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID) will enable the researchers to continue their work to address the global food challenge. “Today's report on world hunger and nutrition from
five UN agencies reinforces our mission to work doggedly to provide new means to eradicate world hunger and malnutrition by 2030 and beyond,” said RIPE Director Stephen Long, the Gutgsell Endowed Professor of Crop Sciences and Plant Biology at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic at Illinois. “This investment is timely. Annual yield gains are stagnating and means to achieve substantial improvement must be developed now if we are to provide sufficient food for a growing and increasingly urban world population when food production must also adapt sustainably to a changing climate.”
3 improvements in greenhouse and preliminary field trials. “Our modeling predicts that several of these improvements can be combined to achieve additive yield increases, providing real hope that a 50 percent yield increase in just three decades is possible,” Long said. “With the reinvestment, a central priority will be to move these improved photosynthesis traits into commodity crops of the developed world, like soybeans, as well as crops that matter in the developing world, including cassava and cowpeas.” RIPE and its funders will ensure that their highyielding food crops are globally available and affordable for smallholder
farmers to help feed the world’s hungriest and reduce poverty, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. But we still have a long road ahead of us, Long said. “It takes about fifteen years from discovery until crops with these transformative biotechnologies are available for farmers,” he said. “It will therefore be well into the 2030s before such superior crops are seen at scale in farmers’ fields.” Long and Ort are also part of the Department of Crop Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at Illinois.

When Things Go Awry What do you do when things go awry? Awry is a small word, but means a big heap of trouble, askew, or amiss. No one is immune to gray, stormy days. How we handle our troubles determines our outlook and our victory over whatever may come. Have you ever noticed that the cliché, “When it rains, it pours,” is often true? On a recent rainy morning I went outside and discovered that someone had egged my truck, someone that I was counting on helping me with a project canceled, my wife called and said that we needed to put our 14-year-old dog down and I was elected to take her to the vet — my day seemed down-hill from there. What do you do when things go awry? Some people get stressed, some depressed, and some try to self-medicate with a pill or a drink. But God’s Word teaches us how to overcome when troubles arise and things go awry. Jesus and his disciples got in a small boat and Jesus commanded them to take the boat across the lake. Jesus put his head on a cushion and

went to sleep. A fierce storm blew up, the wind and waves whipped water into the boat. The disciples were terrified and woke Jesus up. Jesus arose, rebuked the storm, and the sea became as calm as glass. Jesus asked the disciples this vital question, “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:22-23) How can we generate faith when things go awry? PRAISE GOD! Paul said, “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (I Thessalonians 5:16-18) It may sound crazy, but begin to thank God. It will take your focus off your problems and put it on the Problem Solver. David said, “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1-7) Some people get upset when they have a bad hair day. Ancient Job
had more trouble in one day than many people have in an entire lifetime. Satan attacked his livestock, his children, and his health all in one day. What did Job do? “Then Job arose . . . fell upon the ground and worshipped.” (Job 1:1922) There is power in praise! PRAY! We have this powerful prescription, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer ... with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) An old hymn reminds us “Tell It to Jesus” — “He is a friend that’s well k n ow n .” T h r o u g h prayer, cast your burden on the Lord. PUT YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE PRINCE OF PEACE! The enemy of your soul, the devil, will try to distract, rattle, or confuse you. Here is a key to victory, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3-4) Where was Jesus during the storm at sea? In the
back of the boat asleep. He had a perfect trust in his heavenly Father and had perfect peace. Fix your thoughts on Jesus. When Jesus stilled the storm, the disciples said, “Who is this, for he commands even the winds and water and they obey him.” (Luke 8:25) God is an awesome God. Keep your mind stayed on Jesus. Those who do jigsaw puzzles follow the picture on the lid of the puzzle. I bought my wife a 6,000-piece puzzle at a garage sale. She worked hard on it but was confused and frustrated until she realized someone had put the wrong lid on the puzzle and she was trying to fol l ow t he w rong picture. Many are trying to put the pieces of their life together, but they have the wrong lid. Look to Jesus. (John 14:6) Make him “a friend that’s well known.” “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25) Put these principles of faith into action and live victorious over the troubles of life. Cooking With Lizzie
Halloween (Trick Or Treat) Send-off Menu Halloween is just around the corner — or should I say trick or treat! You can give a hearty Halloween send-off to a band of merry masqueraders. Start with Jack-O'-Lantern Burgers!
Jack-O'-Lantern Burgers 2 lbs. ground beef 1 ½tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper
1/4 cup tomato juice 8 slices American cheese
Break up beef with fork. Handling meat lightly, mix in salt, pepper and tomato juice. Gently form into 8 patties. Cook on lightly greased hot skillet; for medium-rare, cook 5 minutes on one side until well browned, then turn and brown other side 3 minutes. Meanwhile, cut jack-o'-lantern eyes, nose and mouth shapes out of each slice of cheese. Place a cut-out cheese slice on each patty and return to skillet to allow cheese to melt, cooking about 2 minutes longer. Serve open-face on hamburger buns or toasted English muffins. Makes 8 servings. NOTE: Allow for a little self-expression and have each youngster cut out the face for his or her burger.
Pumpkin Centerpiece Cake 2 Halloween Pumpkin Cakes (recipe below) 3 cups confectioners' sugar 1/3 cup orange juice 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup granulated sugar Green food coloring 1 pkg. (3 oz.) cream cheese, softened Make 2 Halloween Pumpkin Cakes, baking each in Bundt pan. Cool completely. Cut thin slice off bottom of each cake to flatten uneven surface caused by rising. Place cakes, flattened surfaces together, on serving dish, matching ridges on the two cakes. Cut out curved horizontal wedge (about 1/2" deep) from one side of bottom cake to make jack-o'-lantern mouth. To form nose, cut out triangular wedge where the cakes join. Cut out 2 triangular wedges from top cake to form eyes. Heat orange juice and granulated sugar until sugar is dissolved; cool. Prick cakes all over and drizzle evenly with orange syrup. Beat cream cheese until smooth; gradually beat in confectioners' sugar, vanilla and food coloring. Beat until mixture holds together. Chill 10 minutes. Form some of mixture into leaves and place on top of cake. Spoon remainder onto waxed paper. Dust hands with confectioners' sugar and shape mixture to form a stem. Fit stem on top of cake, molding to shape as necessary.
Halloween Pumpkin Cake 1/2 cup butter 1½ cups sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1 cup canned pumpkin or fresh pumpkin puree 1/4 cup milk 1 cup chopped walnuts 3/4 cup raisins
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Sift flour with baking powder, baking soda and spices; stir into butter mixture alternately with pumpkin, ending with flour. Stir in milk, walnuts and raisins. Pour batter into greased, floured 10" Bundt pan. Bake in preheated 350° oven 1 hour and 15 minutes or until cake tests done (stick toothpick into middle of cake; if it comes out clean, cake is done). Cool in pan 30 minutes, then turn out onto cake rack to finish cooling.

CENTRALIA BUCHHEIT GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION BEGINS WITH BOARD CUTTING
Shopper's Weekly Staff Photo
Last weekend's grand opening of the new Centralia Buchheit store on West McCord began with the official ribbon cutting / board cutting. Kenny Buchheit, surrounded by Buchheit family members, other senior management staff and Centralia staff, celebrates after the board cutting.
Pre-ceremony activities included the Centralia Fire Department displaying the American Flag, the American Legion and VFW presenting the colors and the national anthem being sung by the Centralia High School choir. In keeping with the typical Buchheit event theme, many
weekend activities were fun events for the family, including rope making, the Bucky Express train, a barnyard bounce house, petting zoo, FFA barnyard olympics and more. In addition, many community organizations participated with booths to inform the general public about their activities.
KC FALL CHOIR CONCERT Join the Kaskaskia College Music Department for their second concert of the 2017-18 season. The college choirs will be presenting a fall choral concert in collaboration with the Centralia High School choirs. The concert will feature a tremendous selection of choral music in varying styles. The event will be held Thursday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kaskaskia C ollege Jane Knight Auditorium. Admission is free.  Featured will be the Kaskaskia College Concert Choir and KC Blues, under the direction of Professor Lynda Marshall and the Centralia High School
Choirs, under the direction of Jami Hodges. Â The college choirs are eager to host the visiting choirs from Centralia, as some of the current members are graduates of Centralia High School. The Centralia High School choirs that will be performing at the concert include: Beginning and Concert Choir, which are open to any CHS student and Advanced Treble and A cappella Choirs which are selected through an audition process. Each choir will be singing two contemporary selections and combining with the Kaskaskia College choirs for one final piece.Â
Two of the Kaskaskia College choirs, Concert Choir and KC Blues, will be presenting music ranging from Latin-infused repertoire to a gorgeous, contemporary setting of “America the Beautiful, featuring guest cellist, Angelina Mc-LaughlinHeil, from the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra. According to Professor Lynda Marshall, “collaborating with local schools and professional musicians is a delightful way to participate in fresh musical experiences that create unique, lifelong memories that are very special to not only the performers, but those in attendance.

The Non Sequiturs of the Gun Debate
The mind boggles at the horror of Las Vegas, where Stephen Paddock perched himself in the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel and sprayed bullets into a crowd of outdoor concertgoers in the worst mass shooting in American history. If this slaughter of innocents were an act perpetrated by a foreign power, the U.S. military retaliation would begin immediately, and rightly so. The impulse to act to stop the domestic massacres that have become a heartbreakingly metronomic feature of American life is laudable and understandable. "It's time," as Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy said, giving voice to the sentiment, "for Congress to get off its a-- and do something." The problem is that the "something," namely all the usual gun-control proposals, isn't well-suited to stopping mass shootings. But liberal politicians never let the inapplicability of their proposals stop them. The passion with which they advocate for new
gun-control measures is inversely related to their prospective efficacy. The go-to proposal is universal background checks, although the perpetrators of mass shootings usually haven't been adjudicated and therefore have passed background checks, as Paddock did in purchasing at least some of his guns. No enhanced background-check regime, no matter how vigorous, would have stopped him from purchasing guns. Hillary Clinton immediately singled out so-called silencers, or suppressors. "The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots," Clinton tweeted. "Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make it easier to get." This conjures an image of the killer shooting down people with a gun impossible to hear, a conception straight out of a James Bond movie. In a piece on Republicansupported legislation to make suppressors easier to acquire, The Washington Post notes that one of the devices would lessen the sound of an AR-15 to 132 decibels, or comparable to "a gunshot or a jackhammer." In other words, a rifle still sounds like a gun even with a suppressor. If Hillary cares so much about the issue, she might take 10 minutes to learn something about it, but gun-
controllers tend to be lowinformation advocates. Confusion between semiautomatic weapons, which are common and fire once each time the trigger is pulled, and automatic weapons, which are rare and fire multiple times each time the trigger is pulled, is a persistent feature of the gun debate. Many gun-controllers don't know the difference and erroneously refer to, say, AR-15 rifles as machine guns or automatic weapons. This is an area where Congress has already legislated, though. It is illegal to own an automatic weapon made after May 1, 1986, and difficult and expensive to own one made before that. Finally, there are always calls to limit magazine sizes, although this wouldn't have stopped Paddock, either. It took the SWAT team more than an hour to breach his room. The images from Las Vegas are sickening. There's the sound of gunfire truly worthy of a war zone as people scream and run and cower, with nowhere to go. This shouldn't happen in America; it shouldn't happen anywhere. But that doesn't mean that the off-the-shelf obsessions of gun-control advocates would do the slightest thing to stop it. The 2017 Illinois Fall Trout Fishing Season will open on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 54 ponds, lakes, and streams throughout the state. Prior to the fall trout opener, the Fall Catch-andRelease Fly Fishing Season opened at nine sites (locations marked with an asterisk (*) in the list below) on Saturday, Oct. 7. Fly fishing anglers can use fly fishing gear to catch and release trout at those nine sites. No trout may be kept during the fly fishing period, but anglers can keep trout after the opening of the regular fall trout season beginning Oct. 21. The Illinois catchable trout program is funded by those who use the program through the sale of Inland Trout Stamps. For the fall season, the IDNR stocks approximately 80,000 rainbow trout into bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted. No trout may be taken from any of the stocked sites from Oct. 1 until the fall trout season opens at 5:00 a.m. on Oct.21 (not all sites are open at 5:00 a.m. on opening day). Anyone attempting to take (harvest) trout before the legal harvest season opening will be issued citations. All anglers – including those using fly fishing gear who intend to release fish caught before Oct. 21 – must have a valid fishing license and an Inland Trout Stamp, unless they are under the age of 16, blind or disabled, or are an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces. The daily catch limit for each angler is five trout. Illinois fishing licenses and Inland Trout Stamps are available at DNR Direct license and permit locations, including many bait shops, sporting goods stores and other retail outlets. For a location near you, check the IDNR website at this link: https://www.dnr.illinois. gov/LPR/Pages/ LicensePermitVendors.aspx Fishing licenses and trout stamps can also be purchased by using a credit card through DNR Direct online via the IDNR website at www.dnr. illinois.gov, or by calling DNR Direct toll-free at 1-888-6PERMIT (1-888-6737648). NOTE: Not all fall trout sites open at 5:00 a.m. on opening day. Anglers are reminded to check the opening time of their favorite trout

REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION STATEMENT ON H.R. 36 In the wake of legislation signed by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner that would allow for the use of taxpayer money to cover an unlimited number of abortions anytime for any reason, members of the Illinois Republican Congressional Delegation voted to advance bipartisan legislation H.R. 36 – the Unborn Pain-Capable Child Protection Act – to restrict abortions 20 weeks or more after conception, the point at which unborn fetuses can feel pain. Representatives Peter Roskam (IL-06), John Shimkus (IL-15), Randy Hultgren (IL-14), Rodney Davis (IL-13), Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), Darin LaHood (IL-18) and Mike Bost (IL-12) released the following statement: “Henry Hyde championed the rights of the unborn through the Hyde Amendment, which expressly prohibits federal
funding for abortions. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2005 to 2014, the infant mortality rate in the United States dropped 15 percent. Much of this progress can be attributed to technological advancements in medicine that gives children born prematurely and with various medical issues a fighting chance. H.R. 36 protects children like Micah Pickering who was born at 22 weeks and is a thriving toddler today. Read his story here. “In a reversal of longstanding Illinois policy, Governor Rauner has let down Illinois taxpayers and the unborn by signing H.B. 40. Today, the Illinois delegation stands together in our support of H.R. 36 to protect human life.” T h e Pa i n - C ap a b l e Unborn Child Act (H.R.36) restricts abortions 20 weeks or more after conception.
Specifically, H.R.36 establishes criminal penalties for any person who performs or attempts an abortion on a fetus after the 20-week mark. In addition, this bill provides exceptions to save the life of the mother and in the case of rape or incest. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that H.R 36 would save roughly 10,000 lives each year. The U.S. is one of only seven countries in the world that allows elective abortion past 20 weeks (5 months), at which point scientific evidence suggests that the baby is capable of feeling excruciating pain during an abortion procedure. A poll released in January 2017 found that 74 percent of Americans want abortion restricted to, at most, the first trimester. At the state level, over a dozen states across the country have enacted 20-week bills.

Can Dog, Grandson Ever be Friends? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was hoping that my 3-year-old grandson and my dog "Charlie" would get along. But Charlie, who's a little Chihuahua, always barks like crazy when my grandson walks in the room. It scares my grandson, who starts crying. How can I bring these two together to be friends? — Jerry T., Wichita, Kansas DEAR JERRY: You may need to wait until your grandson is a little bit older to properly introduce them. Charlie appears to be getting stressed when the toddler comes into the room. Is Charlie a rescue? Maybe there's an incident in his past that is making him nervous when small children are around. Or, being a small dog, Charlie may simply be unnerved by your grandson's size or gait. If your grandson is old enough to follow instructions and exer-
11
The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area
cise some self-control, you can carefully introduce the two. Hold Charlie in your arms so that he feels safe, and so you can keep him at or just a little higher than your grandson's line of sight. Tell your grandson not to try and touch or grab Charlie, and to speak quietly. At this point, if Charlie remains calm when he's face to face with a toddler, then give your grandson permission to pet Charlie gently. If your dog growls or gives any sign of being stressed, back away or have your grandson pull back, to prevent any nips or wild barking. Don't get discouraged if the relationship doesn't work out, and don't force it. Instead, focus on teaching your grandson how to safely approach and interact with dogs. When he's older and has more selfcontrol, you again can try to bring them together. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area
by Samantha Weaver • It was anti-apartheid activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner and South African president Nelson Mandela who made the following sage observation: "If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner." • In 1946, there were only 10,000 privately owned television sets in the United States. By
1952, that number had grown to 12 million. • Those who study such things say that the mouth of an anteater is only an inch wide. • Alexander III of Macedon earned the moniker Alexander the Great by embarking on an unprecedented military campaign in Asia and north Africa after he became king at the age of 20. By the time he was 30,
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you love being the focus of attention, it’s a good idea to take a few steps back right now to just watch the action. What you see can help with an upcoming decision. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) “Caution” continues to be your watchword this week, as a former colleague tries to reconnect old links. There are still some dark places that need to be illuminated. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Making a good first impression is important. Revealing your often hidden sense of humor can help you get through some of the more awkward situations. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking that Cancer Crab image too seriously? Lighten up. Instead of complaining about your problems, start resolving them. A friend would be happy to help. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A widening distance between you and that special person needs to be handled with honesty and sensitivity. Don’t let jealousy create an even greater gap between you two. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. Your handling of a delicate family matter rates kudos. But no resting on your laurels just yet. You still have to resolve that on-thejob problem. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might surprise everyone by being unusually impulsive this week. But
his empire stretched from Greece to present-day India. One of the things that made his army different is that he required his soldiers to be cleanshaven. He felt that during battle, beards made a convenient handhold and could be grabbed by their enemies. • You might be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as a poisonous snake. Of course, there are venomous snakes. What's the difference, you may ask. Well, something that is poisonous has detrimental effects when you ingest it -- for example, poisonous mushrooms. As a general rule, eating snake meat
even level-headed Libras need to do the unexpected now and then. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A period of turmoil gives way to a calmer, more settled environment. Use this quieter time to patch up neglected personal and/or professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new relationship could create resentment among family and friends who feel left out of your life. Show them you care by making more time for them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Concentrate on completing all your unfinished tasks before deadline. You’ll then be able to use this freed-up time to research new career opportunities. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re right to try to help colleagues resolve their heated differences. But keep your objectivity and avoid showing any favoritism ‘twixt the two sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your personal life continues to show positive changes. Enjoy this happy turn of events, by all means. But be careful not to neglect your workplace obligations. BORN THIS WEEK: People of all ages look to you for advice and encouragement. You would make an excellent counselor. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
won't hurt you. Because snakes inject the toxin into your bloodstream, they're venomous. *** Thought for the Day: “A writer — and I believe, generally all persons — must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. All things have been given to us for a purpose, and an artist must feel this more intensely. All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art.” — Jorge Luis Borge © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
