With the exception of March, September is the best month there is for the sports world, and this year's installment was no exception. It's the beginning of
the football season, the U.S. Open concludes in tennis, there are prize fights, the President's Cup in golf and what used to be called "pennant races" in baseball. Nothing is more important than these first few

weeks in the world of football. For the NCAA, championships are determined in the first three weeks. If you're considered a contender for the B owl Championship Series, you had best not lose any of these first three games. One loss can decide your collegiate fate. Gone are Kansas State, Stanford, Tennessee and UCLA as all four dropped out of the Top 25. To the surprise of n o b o d y, A l a b a m a , Clemson, Oklahoma and Penn State top the charts. As usual, it's Alabama's season to lose. In pro football, these first three weeks are the best weeks for the bettor. A learned man once explained to me that it takes bookies and oddsmakers these first three weeks to calibrate their picks. In other words, they have no clear idea of what's what yet, so you can bet on just about any game during the short "fluke season." What have we learned so far this NFL season? The Raiders and the Chiefs look superb — rekindling a great, historic rivalry. The Falcons offense, like their new stadium, looks unreal. The Broncos defense turns their mile-high advantage up to 11, and the Giants, Bengals and Jets (oh my!) look terrible. In baseball, while it looks like the Dodgers are the team to beat in the postseason, you never can tell. After all, Clayton Kershaw gave up a grand slam in
September — the first of his career — so they look vulnerable (sarcasm). The excitement of what would have been a classic Yankees vs. Red Sox run in the American League East has been dampened by all of the wild card nonsense. I'm biased, but the streaking Bronx Bombers are going to be formidable in the postseason with that killer lineup and tough bullpen. In tennis, 24-year-old American Sloane Stephens, long touted as the heir apparent for the Williams sisters, won the U.S. Open with panache, and Rafael Nadal, reeling from his Wimbledon loss, careened in Queens and took home another attractive piece for his mantle. And of course, in its usual inimitable fashion, boxing blew it once again. The much heralded "real fight" between Gennedy "GGG" Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez went to the scorecards, which gives us a chance to view the psychosis of the judges. This year, they called it a draw, but they should have called a doctor because the cards should have read, "Get well soon, boxing." Fix your scoring before Teddy Atlas drops dead of a heart attack right on the screen, the world of sports begs you. REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION STATEMENT ON H.R. 36 In the wake of legislation signed by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner that would allow for the use of taxpayer money to cover an unlimited number of abortions anytime for any reason, members of the Illinois Republican Congressional Delegation voted to advance bipartisan legislation H.R. 36 – the Unborn Pain-Capable Child Protection Act – to restrict abortions 20 weeks or more after conception, the point at which unborn fetuses can feel pain. Representatives Peter Roskam (IL-06), John Shimkus (IL-15), Randy Hultgren (IL-14), Rodney Davis (IL-13), Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), Darin LaHood (IL-18) and Mike Bost (IL-12) released the following statement: “Henry Hyde championed the rights of the unborn through the Hyde Amendment, which expressly prohibits federal
funding for abortions. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2005 to 2014, the infant mortality rate in the United States dropped 15 percent. Much of this progress can be attributed to technological advancements in medicine that gives children born prematurely and with various medical issues a fighting chance. H.R. 36 protects children like Micah Pickering who was born at 22 weeks and is a thriving toddler today. Read his story here. “In a reversal of longstanding Illinois policy, Governor Rauner has let down Illinois taxpayers and the unborn by signing H.B. 40. Today, the Illinois delegation stands together in our support of H.R. 36 to protect human life.” T h e Pa i n - C ap a b l e Unborn Child Act (H.R.36) restricts abortions 20 weeks or more after conception.
Specifically, H.R.36 establishes criminal penalties for any person who performs or attempts an abortion on a fetus after the 20-week mark. In addition, this bill provides exceptions to save the life of the mother and in the case of rape or incest. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that H.R 36 would save roughly 10,000 lives each year. The U.S. is one of only seven countries in the world that allows elective abortion past 20 weeks (5 months), at which point scientific evidence suggests that the baby is capable of feeling excruciating pain during an abortion procedure. A poll released in January 2017 found that 74 percent of Americans want abortion restricted to, at most, the first trimester. At the state level, over a dozen states across the country have enacted 20-week bills.

In keeping with the typical Buchheit event theme, many weekend activities were fun events for the family, including rope making, the Bucky Express train, a barnyard bounce
house, petting zoo, FFA barnyard olympics and more. In addition, many community organizations participated with booths to inform the general public about their activities.

“It is an honor to have the support from the members of our congressional delegation,” said Erika Harold. “As leaders from across our state, our congressmen know how important real reforms are to our state. Congressman Rodney Davis said, “Erika Harold is exactly who we need to take on the political machine. A Harvard educated lawyer and a national leader combatting school violence, Erika Harold tells the hard truths and always stands up for those in need. I know she’ll take on the corruption in state government.”
IRS SCAM REPORTED TO CENTRALIA POLICE On Friday, Oct., 6 Centralia Police took a report of phone scam in which a caller identified their self as being from the Internal Revenue Service. The complainant determined that number appeared on the caller ID was one of the non-emergency numbers, 618-533-7602, from the Centralia Police Department and notified police. The practice of making the wrong number
appear on caller ID is commonly referred to as “spoofing” and unfortunately this technology is readily available on the internet. No one from the IRS or the Centralia Police Department will call you and ask for any personal identifiers. A reminder from the IRS website https://www.irs. gov/newsroom/tax-scamsconsumer-alerts
REMEMBER: The IRS doesn't initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. In addition, IRS does not threaten taxpayers with lawsuits, imprisonment or other enforcement action. Recognizing these telltale signs of a phishing or tax scam could save you from becoming a victim.

The Non Sequiturs of the Gun Debate
The mind boggles at the horror of Las Vegas, where Stephen Paddock perched himself in the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel and sprayed bullets into a crowd of outdoor concertgoers in the worst mass shooting in American history. If this slaughter of innocents were an act perpetrated by a foreign power, the U.S. military retaliation would begin immediately, and rightly so. The impulse to act to stop the domestic massacres that have become a heartbreakingly metronomic feature of American life is laudable and understandable. "It's time," as Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy said, giving voice to the sentiment, "for Congress to get off its a-- and do something." The problem is that the "something," namely all the usual gun-control proposals, isn't well-suited to stopping mass shootings. But liberal politicians never let the inapplicability of their proposals stop them. The passion with which they advocate for new
gun-control measures is inversely related to their prospective efficacy. The go-to proposal is universal background checks, although the perpetrators of mass shootings usually haven't been adjudicated and therefore have passed background checks, as Paddock did in purchasing at least some of his guns. No enhanced background-check regime, no matter how vigorous, would have stopped him from purchasing guns. Hillary Clinton immediately singled out so-called silencers, or suppressors. "The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots," Clinton tweeted. "Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make it easier to get." This conjures an image of the killer shooting down people with a gun impossible to hear, a conception straight out of a James Bond movie. In a piece on Republicansupported legislation to make suppressors easier to acquire, The Washington Post notes that one of the devices would lessen the sound of an AR-15 to 132 decibels, or comparable to "a gunshot or a jackhammer." In other words, a rifle still sounds like a gun even with a suppressor. If Hillary cares so much about the issue, she might take 10 minutes to learn something about it, but gun-
controllers tend to be lowinformation advocates. Confusion between semiautomatic weapons, which are common and fire once each time the trigger is pulled, and automatic weapons, which are rare and fire multiple times each time the trigger is pulled, is a persistent feature of the gun debate. Many gun-controllers don't know the difference and erroneously refer to, say, AR-15 rifles as machine guns or automatic weapons. This is an area where Congress has already legislated, though. It is illegal to own an automatic weapon made after May 1, 1986, and difficult and expensive to own one made before that. Finally, there are always calls to limit magazine sizes, although this wouldn't have stopped Paddock, either. It took the SWAT team more than an hour to breach his room. The images from Las Vegas are sickening. There's the sound of gunfire truly worthy of a war zone as people scream and run and cower, with nowhere to go. This shouldn't happen in America; it shouldn't happen anywhere. But that doesn't mean that the off-the-shelf obsessions of gun-control advocates would do the slightest thing to stop it. BLAINE WILHOUR FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE ANNOUCEMENT “I believe there comes a time when regular folks need to step up,” said Blaine Wilhour. “That is why I’m proud to announce my candidacy for State Representative. I’m running so we can create jobs, cut taxes, enact term limits, and protect our values. Never before has there been such a stark contrast in priorities between the politicians and the hardworking Illinoisans who they supposedly work for, that must change.” Blaine co-owns and operates Longhorn Buildings, LLC. He’s also a third generation family farmer, which he says gives him the insight and experience to make the changes necessary to represent the concerns of Illinoisans fed up with an out-of-touch government. “I’ve seen first-hand the effects of a dysfunctional government that doesn’t promote business growth and development. Instead, we are burdened with

policies that lack common sense, stifle our economy and ignore the reality the average citizen faces each day,” Wilhour said. Blaine is not a career politician — his priorities are simple: • CREATE JOBS — bring employees and employers back to Illinois by greatly improving our business climate with job-creating reforms • CUT TAXES — roll back the 32% Madigan Income tax hike, and freeze our property taxes • PROTECT OUR CONSERVATIVE VALUES — Pro-Family, Pro-Gun and Pro-Life rights • TERM LIMITS — being a legislator wasn’t meant to be a career. Implement term limits and eliminate legislator pensions Faith is Blaine’s guiding principle. He’s a committed Christian and understands the importance of family. Blaine and his wife, Amber, reside in rural Beecher City

BOROWIAK’S BEST
Halloween (Trick Or Treat) Send-off Menu Halloween is just around the corner — or should I say trick or treat! You can give a hearty Halloween send-off to a band of merry masqueraders. Start with Jack-O'-Lantern Burgers!
Jack-O'-Lantern Burgers 2 lbs. ground beef 1 ½tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper
Break up beef with fork. Handling meat lightly, mix in salt, pepper and tomato juice. Gently form into 8 patties. Cook on lightly greased hot skillet; for medium-rare, cook 5 minutes on one side until well browned, then turn and brown other side 3 minutes. Meanwhile, cut jack-o'-lantern eyes, nose and mouth shapes out of each slice of cheese. Place a cut-out cheese slice on each patty and return to skillet to allow cheese to melt, cooking about 2 minutes longer. Serve open-face on hamburger buns or toasted English muffins. Makes 8 servings. NOTE: Allow for a little self-expression and have each youngster cut out the face for his or her burger.

water into the boat. The disciples were terrified and woke Jesus up. Jesus arose, rebuked the storm, and the sea became as calm as glass. Jesus asked the disciples this vital question, “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:2223) How can we generate faith when things go awry? PRAISE GOD! Paul said, “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (I Thessalonians 5:16-18) It may sound crazy, but begin to thank God. It will take your focus off your problems and put it on the Problem Solver. David said, “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1-7) Some people get upset when they have a bad hair day. Ancient Job had more trouble in one day than many people have in an entire lifetime. Satan attacked his livestock, his children, and his health all in one day. What did Job do? “Then Job arose . . . fell upon the ground and worshipped.” (Job 1:19-22) There is power in praise! PRAY! We have this powerful prescription, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer ... with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) An old hymn reminds us “Tell It to Jesus” — “He is a friend that’s well known.” Through prayer, cast your burden on the

Lord. P U T YO U R THOUGHTS ON THE PRINCE OF PEACE! The enemy of your soul, the devil, will try to distract, rattle, or confuse you. Here is a key to victory, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3-4) Where was Jesus during the storm at sea? In the back of the boat asleep. He had a perfect trust in his heavenly Father and had perfect peace. Fix your thoughts on Jesus. When Jesus stilled the storm, the disciples said, “Who is this, for he commands even the winds and water and they obey him.” (Luke 8:25) God is an awesome God. Keep your mind stayed on Jesus. Those who do jigsaw puzzles follow the picture on the lid of the puzzle. I bought my wife a 6,000piece puzzle at a garage sale. She worked hard on it but was confused and frustrated until she realized someone had put the wrong lid on the puzzle and she was trying to follow the wrong picture. Many are trying to put the pieces of their life together, but they have the wrong lid. Look to Jesus. (John 14:6) Make him “a friend that’s well known.” “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25) Put these principles of faith into action and live victorious over the troubles of life. What do you do when things go awry? Awry is a small word, but means a big heap of trouble, askew, or amiss. No one is immune to gray, stormy days. How we handle our troubles determines our outlook and our victory over whatever may come. Have you ever noticed that the cliché, “When it rains, it pours,” is often true? On a recent rainy morning I went outside and discovered that someone had egged my truck, someone that I was counting on helping me with a project canceled, my wife called and said that we needed to put our 14-yearold dog down and I was elected to take her to the vet — my day seemed down-hill from there. What do you do when things go awry? Some people get stressed, some depressed, and some try to self-medicate with a pill or a drink. But God’s Word teaches us how to overcome when troubles arise and things go awry. Jesus and his disciples got in a small boat and Jesus commanded them to take the boat across the lake. Jesus put his head on a cushion and went to sleep. A fierce storm blew up, the wind and waves whipped

GHOST IN A GRAVEYARD TREASURE HUNT
Submitted photo
Local treasure hunter and adventure enthusiast Rick McDonald started a treasure hunting group on Facebook called Ghost in a Graveyard. Rick published a treasure map which contained chal-

lenging and cryptic clues to the location of a hidden treasure chest, or in the case of the latest hunt, a key, and invited the public to find it and claim the treasure. During the latest hunt, mem-
bership to the group has grown to nearly 3,000 members. The latest treasure hunt organized by Rick McDonald recently ended after about seven weeks when Veronica Gibson and Kay Thomas of Iuka (pictured) unlocked all the clues from the treasure map and found the key that was hidden somewhere in Marion County. Gibson and Thomas came to Jim's Coin Shop in Centralia with the key to claim the treasure chest which contained several rare coins, paper money and other collectibles. Individuals and businesses added items to the treasure chest as time went on so the treasure kept accumulating as time went on. Rick plans to start a new treasure hunt soon, so keep an eye out in a future issue of The Shoppers Weekly Papers to learn more. Search for "Ghost in a Graveyard" on Facebook for more information.

A SOUTHERN ILLINOIS TRADITION: THE FORT MASSAC ENCAMPMENT Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis hosts one of Illinois’ most popular fall festivals when the annual Fort Massac Encampment is held at the park the weekend of Oct. 21-22. The encampment provides visitors with a chance to experience what life was like at Fort Massac during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The site served as a military outpost along the Ohio River for personnel from France, Britain, and the early years of the United States from 1757 to 1814. Event times are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 21 and 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 22. The Fort Massac Encampment is hosted by
the IDNR with support from the Greater Metropolis Convention and Visitors Bureau. The encampment features an opening ‘Posting of the Colours’ ceremony both days. During each afternoon, mock military battles and tactical demonstrations will be performed by re-enactors on the Fort Massac grounds, with a military retreat ceremony closing both days’ activities. Hundreds of military reenactors and other participants wearing period clothing will present the roles of explorers, traders, settlers and soldiers on the early Illinois frontier. Family and youth activities include storytellers, magic and puppet shows,

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was hoping that my 3-year-old grandson and my dog "Charlie" would get along. But Charlie, who's a little Chihuahua, always barks like crazy when my grandson walks in the room. It scares my grandson, who starts crying. How can I bring these two together to be friends? — Jerry T., Wichita, Kansas
appears to be getting stressed when the toddler comes into the room. Is Charlie a rescue? Maybe there's an incident in his past that is making him nervous when small children are around. Or, being a small dog, Charlie may simply be unnerved by your grandson's size or gait. If your grandson is old enough to follow instructions and exercise some self-control, you can carefully introduce the two. Hold Charlie in your arms so that he feels safe, and so you can keep him at or just a little higher than your grandson's line of sight. Tell your grandson not to try and touch or grab Charlie, and to speak quietly. At this point, if Charlie remains calm when he's face to face with a toddler, then give your grandson permission to pet Charlie gently. If your dog growls or gives any sign of being

by Samantha Weaver • It was anti-apartheid activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner and South African president Nelson Mandela who made the following sage observation: "If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner." • In 1946, there were only 10,000 privately owned television sets in the United States. By
1952, that number had grown to 12 million. • Those who study such things say that the mouth of an anteater is only an inch wide. • Alexander III of Macedon earned the moniker Alexander the Great by embarking on an unprecedented military campaign in Asia and north Africa after he became king at the age of 20. By the time he was 30,
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you love being the focus of attention, it’s a good idea to take a few steps back right now to just watch the action. What you see can help with an upcoming decision. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) “Caution” continues to be your watchword this week, as a former colleague tries to reconnect old links. There are still some dark places that need to be illuminated. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Making a good first impression is important. Revealing your often hidden sense of humor can help you get through some of the more awkward situations. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking that Cancer Crab image too seriously? Lighten up. Instead of complaining about your problems, start resolving them. A friend would be happy to help. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A widening distance between you and that special person needs to be handled with honesty and sensitivity. Don’t let jealousy create an even greater gap between you two. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. Your handling of a delicate family matter rates kudos. But no resting on your laurels just yet. You still have to resolve that on-thejob problem. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might surprise everyone by being unusually impulsive this week. But
his empire stretched from Greece to present-day India. One of the things that made his army different is that he required his soldiers to be cleanshaven. He felt that during battle, beards made a convenient handhold and could be grabbed by their enemies. • You might be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as a poisonous snake. Of course, there are venomous snakes. What's the difference, you may ask. Well, something that is poisonous has detrimental effects when you ingest it -- for example, poisonous mushrooms. As a general rule, eating snake meat
even level-headed Libras need to do the unexpected now and then. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A period of turmoil gives way to a calmer, more settled environment. Use this quieter time to patch up neglected personal and/or professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new relationship could create resentment among family and friends who feel left out of your life. Show them you care by making more time for them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Concentrate on completing all your unfinished tasks before deadline. You’ll then be able to use this freed-up time to research new career opportunities. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re right to try to help colleagues resolve their heated differences. But keep your objectivity and avoid showing any favoritism ‘twixt the two sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your personal life continues to show positive changes. Enjoy this happy turn of events, by all means. But be careful not to neglect your workplace obligations. won't hurt you. Because snakes inject the toxin into your bloodstream, they're venomous. *** Thought for the Day: “A writer — and I believe, generally all persons — must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. All things have been given to us for a purpose, and an artist must feel this more intensely. All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art.” — Jorge Luis Borge © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
