LIVE LOCAL FOOD CONFERENCE TO BRING FARMERS, INDUSTRY TOGETHER The Illinois Farm Bureau again this year will host the Live Local Food Conference, Nov. 6-7 at the DoubleTree Hilton in Bloomington. The local and regional food conference, which aims to help farmers growing and marketing local produce expand their businesses, will feature two days of training, workshops, speakers, and tours of local farms. “This year, we’ve revamped the conference to include an additional day and additional opportunities for farmers to network and grow their operations,” said Raghela Scavuzzo, local foods program manager, Illinois Farm Bureau. “One of the most exciting features of this year’s conference is the Food Safety Modernization Certification. The training, which is required of farmers selling produce, will satisfy one of the requirements for the produce rule with the Food Safety Modernization Act.” New this year, attendees will have the opportunity to attend a full-day workshop Nov. 6, choosing from
sessions about the Produce Safety Training, farm business planning, developing and building a cooperative, food hubs, and a local value chain tour, featuring central Illinois farms and businesses. The traditional local and regional foods conference will take place Nov. 7, featuring speakers including Jim Barham, agriculture economist with USDA Rural Development in Washington, D.C., and Jim Matson, who owns Matson Consulting. Additional breakout sessions include: • Marketing and promotion; • Funding and financing; • Market opportunities; • Business tools and technology. Early bird registration for the two-day conference is open now through Oct. 13; registration prices increase after Oct. 13. For more information about the conference, or to register, visit www.ilfb.org/ livelocal or call Raghela Scavuzzo, local foods program manager, Illinois Farm Bureau, at 309-5572155 or rscavuzzo@ilfb.org.

MATING TIME IS HERE, DON’T VEER FOR DEER IDOT, IDNR remind motorists to drive cautiously during fall breeding season. Autumn brings shorter days, cooler temperatures and a new set of driving habits for Illinois motorists. The Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Department of Natural Resources warn drivers to be vigilant during mating season as deer will be more active and visible throughout the state. The risk for deer vs. vehicle crashes greatly increases in October, November and December, especially at dusk and dawn. “Deer can dart in front of a vehicle in the blink of an e y e ,” s a i d I l l i n o i s Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. “It’s instinctual to swerve out of the way, but in doing so, drivers could lose control of the vehicle and cause a more severe crash. If you’re attentive and watchful for deer encounters, these safety tips could make all the difference.” Motorists are urged to follow these safe driving tips during mating season: • Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to deer crossing signs. • Scan the sides of the road for eye shine – the reflection of headlights in the eyes. • Slow down if you see
deer. They travel in groups, so more are likely in the area. • Prepare for the unexpected. Deer can stop in the middle of the road or double back. • If a collision is inevitable, try to glance the vehicle off the deer and avoid swerving into the opposite lanes of traffic. More safe driving tips can be viewed by clicking here. Approximately 40 to 45 percent of crashes in Illinois involving deer in 2016 occ u r r e d i n O c t o b e r, November, and December – with November being the highest-risk month. 75 percent of all motor vehicle crashes involving deer happened in rural environments, with over 70 percent of all crashes taking place at twilight or nighttime. In 2016, there were 14,759 motor vehicle crashes involving deer in Illinois, over one thousand crashes less than the 2015 total. There were 14,248 crashes that resulted in damage to property or vehicles only, down from the 15,431 in 2015. Personal injuries tallied 581 in 2016 versus 628 in 2015 and 569 in 2014. The number of fatalities dropped, from eight in 2015 to five in 2016. The top 10 Illinois counties for crashes involving deer in 2016: 1. Cook-439, 2. Madison-

Jackson -273 “Deer-vehicle accidents can occur any time of year, but deer are especially active in the fall during their mating season,” said Wayne Rosenthal, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. “Motorists should be on the alert for deer near roadways during early morning and evening hours, especially near wooded areas, field edges and waterways.” If you do hit a deer, pull off to the shoulder and turn on the hazard lights. Call 911 to report the accident so the appropriate law enforcement can assist. Do not get out of the vehicle to check on an injured deer or pull it from the road. You can visit the IDNR website for information on how to claim a deer that has been involved in a crash.

ROTARY RECOGNIZES WORLD POLIO DAY
HOYLETON AUTHOR TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE EVENT FOR NEW BOOK RELEASE
Past Rotary District Governor David Matthews, in recognition of the upcoming World Polio Day, was the featured speaker at a recent Noon Rotary Club meeting. Matthews reported Rotary’s Polio Plus Program, which originated in 1985, has accounted for over 2.5 billion polio vaccinations worldwide in their continuing attempt to eradicate this crippling disease. Rotary Program Chair Mary Harvey, right, during her introduction announced thanks to the program, the number of reported new cases of polio in the world have dropped
Deb Obermeier will be hosting an open house event on her farm, located at 22343 Sassafras Road in Hoyleton on Sunday, October 29 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the release of her second novel in the A Simple Stitch Series. The book is entitled A Simple Stitch, A Time To Mend. Both titles are published by Words Matter Publishing. The first book in the series, A Simple Stitch, A Common Thread, along with the new release, is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble Booksellers. The series follows the story of Eliza who lives above her yarn shop on Main Street in the fictional small town of Spring Forrest. In the novel, Summer brings a new season in Spring Forrest. A Simple Stitch is open, and Eliza is anticipating new customers, returning visitors and the weekly Girls Knit Out group that gathers on Friday evenings. The school is out. The Café is as busy as usual. Aunt Mildred has settled comfortably in her Spring Forrest home. It has only been six short months since the gathering at Slipknot Farm celebrating the holidays, yet it feels like an eternity. Relationships were started, and others strengthened during this festive time. Now, life back to usual, the excitement has faded, and Eliza is feeling an unfamiliar

DOWNTOWN CHRISTMAS PARADE THEME ANNOUNCED The Downtown Christmas Parade committee hosted a contest amongst all 5-8 grade students in Jefferson County to create a theme for this year’s Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 2. Seventh grader Cody Jenkins, from McClellan Grade School, submitted the chosen theme, “No Place Like Home for Christmas: Honoring Our Military.” Jenkins wanted a Christmas theme that honored our veterans and emphasized being home for the holidays. Jenkins will
receive a pizza party for his class and get to ride in the parade. The community is invited to embrace this year’s theme by honoring our military in their floats. The “No Place Like Home for Christmas: Honoring Our Military” Parade will begin on 7th Street near the former Mount Vernon Township High School at 5:00 p.m. and end at the corner of 13th and Main, where the lighting ceremony of the Downtown Christmas Tree will be held. A Santa story reading, cookie decorating,
free hot chocolate, concessions, activities and more will follow the parade. The festivities are supported by Mount Vernon Convention and Visitors Bureau, Downtown Mt. Vernon Development Corporation, downtown merchants, and other community businesses on the committee. For more information on the event, including parade entry forms, please contact Melynda Breeze at 618-242-2800 or contact the Mt. Vernon Visitors Center at 618-2423151.

Halloween Treats
Make sure your family and friends get plenty of treats this Halloween. Below are some of my family favorites. 6 medium apples 2 cups sugar 1 cup water
Candied Apples
6 wooden skewers or sticks 2/3 cup light corn syrup Red food coloring
Wash and dry apples. Remove stem from each and insert a wooden skewer securely in its place. In a small heavy saucepan, dissolve sugar and corn syrup in water over medium heat. Raise heat and boil rapidly until syrup reaches 300° on a candy thermometer — the hard crack stage. (No thermometer? Drop a little of the mixture into very cold water; when removed, it will crack when tapped sharply.) Remove from heat and stir in enough food coloring to give a bright rosy color. Place saucepan in a large pan of hot water. Holding each apple by its skewer, dip into syrup until completely coated; place on a greased tray or cookie sheet to harden. Makes 6 candied apples.

Tillerson Should Go If Secretary of State Rex Tillerson resigned, how would anyone know? He has become the nation's least influential top diplomat in recent memory. His relationship with the president of the United States is strained at best, he has no philosophy or signature initiative, he has barely staffed his own department, and he's alienated the foreign service. The former CEO of ExxonMobil has taken one of the power positions in the U.S. government and made it an afterthought. Who knows the truth of the NBC story that he was close to quitting last summer over clashes with President D o n a l d Tr u m p ? B u t Tillerson's strange press availability swearing his loyalty to the president is not the sort of thing loyalists usually have to do. The secretary of state dodged questions about whether he had, indeed, as NBC reported, called Trump a "moron" — almost certainly the first time in U.S. history a Cabinet official has been asked about personally
insulting the president he works for and apparently been unable, in good conscience, to deny it. Tillerson doesn't have an easy job. He works for a mercurial and bombastic boss who has a well-developed skill for humiliating his underlings. Even a practiced and slick diplomat — even Henry Kissinger ; heck, e ven Cardinal Richelieu — would find the circumstances trying. But Tillerson is at sea. He's an accomplished man who ascended to the leadership of a quasi-state as CEO of ExxonMobil. As such, he had done plenty of work abroad. It was in business, though, not government. Unlike, say, James Mattis advising Trump on defense matters, this is not a professional guiding an amateur; it's another amateur trying to school an amateur. Is it any wonder that it hasn't gone well? In a nationalist administration, he is a man without a country. He doesn't have a constituency in the foreignpolicy establishment, in the media, in Congress or in the bureaucracy. Neither of the opposing dispensations in American foreign policy should feel vested in Tillerson. If you're a liberal internationalist who wants Trump checked, you'd prefer someone better suited to the task. If you're a
Trumpist who wants Trump empowered to transform American foreign policy, you want someone who is in sympathy with that goal. Tillerson has been on the other side of Trump on big issues like the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear deal. There's no doubt that Trump's instincts need to be restrained and channeled. That's different from trying to frustrate them, which is bound to run afoul of Dean Acheson's maxim: "The most important aspect of the relationship between the president and the secretary of state is that they both understand who is president." Tillerson's diplomatic skills haven't yet been tested on anything important. At this point, he probably fails a threshold test: Can he reliably be thought to speak for the United States government? The former ExxonMobil chief might imagine himself indispensable as a "minder" of the president. Yet Trump is now surrounded by generals who no one doubts are responsible and influential. If Tillerson left, the government would operate as before -except with a chance there'd be a secretary of state better suited to the role. SOCIAL SECURITY ANNOUNCES 2.0 PERCENT BENEFIT INCREASE FOR 2018 Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 66 million Americans will increase 2.0 percent in 2018, the Social Security Administration announced recently. The 2.0 percent cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 61 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2018. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 29, 2017. (Note: some people receive both Social Security and SSI benefits) The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Some other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $128,700 from $127,200. Of the estimated 175 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2018, about 12 million will pay more because of the increase in the taxable maximum. Infor mation ab out Medicare changes for 2018, when announced, will be available at www.medicare. gov. The Social Security Act provides for how the COLA is calculated. The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area WHEN A FAMILY SERVES GOD TOGETHER, IT MAKES FOR A HAPPY HOUSE. Before going into the Promised Land, Joshua admonished the Israelites to get rid of their idols and cling wholly to the Lord. Joshua declared, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) A father is charged to be the priest or spiritual leader of the home. He leads by example. He should take his family to the Lord’s house, teach them to pray and love and obey God’s Word. When Jesus is Lord of the house – it is a happy house. Martha and Mary invited Jesus to their house. But Martha was so busy preparing dinner she didn’t enjoy the company of Jesus. Mary chose to be seated at the feet of Jesus. She experienced true happiness. WHEN A FAMILY HAS FUN TOGETHER, IT MAKES FOR A HAPPY HOUSE. Spending fun times together builds cohesiveness and cherished memories. Don’t be an absentee parent. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Even working together and teaching
responsibility makes for a happy house. WHEN THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS DEVELOPED AND DISPLAYED, IT MAKES FOR A HAPPY HOUSE. The fruit of the Spirit is the outflow of abiding in Christ. (John 15) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long—suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.” (Galatians 5:22-23) A recent Facebook post describes my mom’s life, I believe. “My mother was far from perfect, she didn’t go to the best schools, dress in fine clothes, or have lots of money, but when I look back, she had riches that money can’t buy, a big heart that only knew one thing, the love for her children.” I pray my lunch buddy has a happy house. Do you have a happy house? It starts by inviting Jesus into your heart and home. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and sup with him and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • It was Irish author and editor Robert Lynd who made the following sage observation: “History may be read as the story of the magnificent rearguard action fought during several thousand years by dogma against curiosity.” • Historians say that the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating dates back to the early European tradi-
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might feel compelled to get involved on the “right side” of a seemingly unfair fight. But appearances can be deceptive. Get the facts before going forth into the fray. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bullying others into agreeing with your position could cause resentment. Instead, persuade them to join you by making your case on a logical pointby-point basis. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist pushing for a workplace decision you might feel is long overdue. Your impatience could backfire. Meanwhile, focus on that still-unsettled personal situation. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspects favor doing something different. You might decide to redecorate your home, or take a trip somewhere you’ve never been, or even change your hairstyle. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might want to take a break from your busy schedule to restore your energy levels. Use this less-hectic time to also reassess your plans and make needed changes. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) What you like to think of as determination might be seen by others as nothing more than stubbornness. Try to be more flexible if you hope to get things resolved. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch that you don’t unwittingly reveal work-related information to
the wrong person. Best to say nothing until you get official clearance to open up. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) With things settling down at work or at home, you can now take on a new challenge without fear of distraction. Be open to helpful suggestions from colleagues. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity can help resolve an emotional situation that might otherwise get out of hand. Continue to be your usual caring, sensitive self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You could impress a lot of influential people with the way you untangle a few knotty problems. Meanwhile, a colleague is set to share some welcome news. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Aspects favor recharging your social life and meeting new people. It’s also a good time to renew friendships that might be stagnating due to neglect on both sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Congratulations. Your talent for working out a highly technical problem earns you well-deserved praise. The weekend could bring news about a friend or relative. Wednesday, October 18, 2017 work by Raul Lemesoff. The artist, known for his eccentricity, converted a 1979 Ford Falcon into a kind of a tank -- it even has a turret that swivels. Instead of soldiers and armaments, however, this tank carries books on shelves both inside and outside the vehicle. Lemesoff drives his “ We a p o n o f M a s s Instruction” through the city streets, delivering free books to all comers. His only requirement? Recipients must promise to read what he gives them. • You’ve certainly heard of “Tarzan of the Apes.” Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 work has been adapted over and over
again — for radio, television, film and more. You probably weren’t aware, though, that the novel was such an instant and ongoing success that Burroughs wrote 24 sequels. • In a recent survey of pet owners, 43 percent of respondents said that they’d be eating healthier themselves if they ate the same thing they fed their pets. *** Thought for the Day: “What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof.” -Christopher Hitchens © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
