HOYLETON AUTHOR TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE EVENT FOR NEW BOOK RELEASE Deb Obermeier will be hosting an open house event on her farm, located at 22343 Sassafras Road in Hoyleton on Sunday, October 29 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the release of her second novel in the A Simple Stitch Series. The book is entitled A Simple Stitch, A Time To Mend. Both titles are published by Words Matter Publishing. The first book in the series, A Simple Stitch, A Common Thread, along with the new release, is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble Booksellers. The series follows the story of Eliza who lives above her yarn shop on Main Street in the fictional small town of Spring Forrest. In the novel, Summer brings a new season in Spring Forrest. A Simple Stitch is open, and Eliza is anticipating new customers, returning visitors and the weekly Girls Knit Out group that gathers on Friday evenings. The school is out. The Café is as busy as usual. Aunt Mildred has settled comfortably in her Spring Forrest home. It has only been six short months since the gathering at Slipknot Farm celebrating the holidays, yet it feels like an eternity. Relationships were started, and others strengthened during this festive time. Now, life back to usual, the excitement has faded, and Eliza is feeling an unfamiliar

Deb Obermeier with her first novel, A Simple Stitch, A Common Thread. emptiness. Always considering herself the strength in the family, she isn't hiding this restlessness as well as she thinks. Looking forward to her weekend at Slipknot Farm to nourish her soul, an accident takes her by surprise. As expected, she immediately steps up. Changes are necessary. Decisions are made without hesitation. During this much needed time to mend, unforeseen events unfold, taking relationships to new heights. While some have tough decisions to make, others

can easily see the answers. You are invited back to A Simple Stitch to watch this quaint shop evolve. Slipknot in the summer is certainly the place to be for working in the garden, cooking and finding rest while sitting on the swing and watching the sun go down. So, as with every season there comes change; although not always easy, it can be a true blessing in disguise. GHOST IN A GRAVEYARD LAUNCHES NEW TREASURE HUNT

Plan Now To Attend: As The Centralia Cultural Society and the Little Theatre Players Present:

BY JESSICA HANKS

As a kid, treasure hunting is just a game you play—a world that you enter through imagination. A world where you cross high seas and fight wild, starving pirates along the way. To d ay i n Ma r i o n County, Illinois this world is now a reality and the game can be played by everyone of all ages. Rick McDonald, a local treasure hunter and adventure enthusiast, has started a treasure hunting group on Facebook called Ghost in a Graveyard, making it possible for this childhood game to be played again with a BIG reward. The newest hunt includes a chest with $1,000 worth of silver, but to find it you will be crossing Marion County instead of the high seas and running into other hunters who are quite a bit friendlier than pirates would be! In last week's Shoppers Weekly, we wrote about Rick's earlier hunt, Where the Bell's Toll, which ended after seven weeks when the key to unlock a chest of treasures was found by a pair of hunters from Iuka. In recent days, the third hunt has launched. Rock Around the Clock is the name of the new hunt and its map has many challeng-

ing and cryptic clues. As soon as word spread that the hunt was on, thousands of searchers flocked to a few local businesses who agreed to hand out copies of the maps, one being Jim's Coin Shop, where the treasure chest can be viewed and a log book can be signed. Rick McDonald was able to collect sponsors who made it possible for the current treasure to be worth so much.

One hunter told me, "It truly has brought my family together and given us a reason to get off our iPads and phones and head outside. We've discovered beautiful places in Marion County we would have never visited otherwise. In the end, the true treasure is time spent together. So we really appreciate Rick for the effort and time he has spent putting this all together." On the Facebook page there are many messages giving thanks to Rick for the fun adventure. In May of 2017 when Ghost in a Graveyard started, it had a few hundred members, but now has grown to over 3,000. In shock of how quickly it took off, Rick is excited to keep going and is planning a fourth hunt. He wishes good luck to all the hunters and states that "no damage to landscaping is necessary, no law needs to be broken, including trespassing." He encourages all hunters to be respectful of public property and also states "Time can point a direction." For more information visit the Ghost in a G r av e y a rd p a g e on Facebook.

time Can Point A Direction. Rick, a professional treasure hunter, goes across country to hunt treasure hidden years ago by the Spanish and has spent thousands of dollars on equipment and traveling. Ghost in a Graveyard hunters have no need for expensive equipment or days of traveling. Rick said the map is all you need. It has been made easy so the whole family can enjoy. Many members (a.k.a. hunters) have written praise about Rick McDonald and how his treasure hunts are something for them to do with their family, bringing kids, spouses and friends together.

The fifth annual Celebrate Centralia Festival of Art, Wine and Music was held last Saturday in downtown Centralia. The 300 block of East Broadway was blocked off and vendors lined both sides of the street. Vendors included many unique and interest-

ing art forms. Also, wineries, craft beer and food stands served the crowd. The east end of the block featured musical entertainment. The festival began at 4:00, and the crowd grew and completely filled the block as the evening progressed.

REP. CAVALETTO TO DATE RETURNS MORE THAN 140K BACK TO TAXPAYERS State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem), announced recently that he returned back to the state another $11,528.38 in his state office allotment for Fiscal Year 2017 (FY17). Cavaletto has returned money back every year he has been in the Illinois House of Representatives, and with this year’s amount the total is estimated at $140,781.88. That is an average of more than $15,500 annual savings for the taxpayers of Illinois. “Some may say that’s not much considering the state owes more than $15 billion in back bills, but if all 177 legislators in the General Assembly were to return

the same average amount of $15,500 each year, then over $2.7 million could be saved every year,” commented Rep. Cavaletto. “My district staff and I have been able to run our office and programs efficiently with the use of technology like e-mail communications to save on postage and conserving use on office supplies,” Cavaletto added. Residents are able to stay connected to legislative activities at www.ilga.gov, at Rep. Cavaletto’s web site (www.johncavaletto.org), and on Facebook. For more information, contact Rep. Cavaletto at 618-548-9080 or at his on-line office at john@johncavaletto.com.

Tillerson Should Go If Secretary of State Rex Tillerson resigned, how would anyone know? He has become the nation's least influential top diplomat in recent memory. His relationship with the president of the United States is strained at best, he has no philosophy or signature initiative, he has barely staffed his own department, and he's alienated the foreign service. The former CEO of ExxonMobil has taken one of the power positions in the U.S. government and made it an afterthought. Who knows the truth of the NBC story that he was close to quitting last summer over clashes with President D o n a l d Tr u m p ? B u t Tillerson's strange press availability swearing his loyalty to the president is not the sort of thing loyalists usually have to do. The secretary of state dodged questions about whether he had, indeed, as NBC reported, called Trump a "moron" — almost certainly the first time in U.S. history a Cabinet official has been asked about personally

insulting the president he works for and apparently been unable, in good conscience, to deny it. Tillerson doesn't have an easy job. He works for a mercurial and bombastic boss who has a well-developed skill for humiliating his underlings. Even a practiced and slick diplomat — even Henry Kissinger ; heck, e ven Cardinal Richelieu — would find the circumstances trying. But Tillerson is at sea. He's an accomplished man who ascended to the leadership of a quasi-state as CEO of ExxonMobil. As such, he had done plenty of work abroad. It was in business, though, not government. Unlike, say, James Mattis advising Trump on defense matters, this is not a professional guiding an amateur; it's another amateur trying to school an amateur. Is it any wonder that it hasn't gone well? In a nationalist administration, he is a man without a country. He doesn't have a constituency in the foreignpolicy establishment, in the media, in Congress or in the bureaucracy. Neither of the opposing dispensations in American foreign policy should feel vested in Tillerson. If you're a liberal internationalist who wants Trump checked, you'd prefer someone better suited to the task. If you're a

Trumpist who wants Trump empowered to transform American foreign policy, you want someone who is in sympathy with that goal. Tillerson has been on the other side of Trump on big issues like the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear deal. There's no doubt that Trump's instincts need to be restrained and channeled. That's different from trying to frustrate them, which is bound to run afoul of Dean Acheson's maxim: "The most important aspect of the relationship between the president and the secretary of state is that they both understand who is president." Tillerson's diplomatic skills haven't yet been tested on anything important. At this point, he probably fails a threshold test: Can he reliably be thought to speak for the United States government? The former ExxonMobil chief might imagine himself indispensable as a "minder" of the president. Yet Trump is now surrounded by generals who no one doubts are responsible and influential. If Tillerson left, the government would operate as before -except with a chance there'd be a secretary of state better suited to the role. Ministries A Happy House I was doing some work at a faith based addiction ministry for women and their children and was invited to have lunch with them. I sat across the table from my buddy – a blond headed four-year-old boy. We had an interesting conversation. He did most of the talking, “I love you, pastor,” he said for about the third time. “Do you live in a gray house or a blue one?” “A gray one,” I said. With much pathos he asked a question that left a catch in my throat knowing some of his background. He asked, “Do you have a happy house?” Do you have a happy house? What makes for a happy house? WHEN A FATHER LOVES THE MOTHER OF THEIR CHILDREN, IT MAKES FOR A HAPPY HOUSE. This brings a sense of peace and security to the whole family. Scripture admonishes a wife to respect and obey her husband in the Lord. But husbands are commanded to, “love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her . . . and must love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife, loves himself.” (Ephesians 5:2533) Infidelity has broken too many homes and hearts. An old song says, “Love makes the world go around.” God reveals the secret to a happy house

Donate Blood In Honor Of

Tom Walsh

T

om Walsh has always been an avid blood donor with having donated 18.5 gallons until he was diagnosed with cancer. In January 2015, he and his wife Karen were told that Tom had a form of cancer called lymphoma. He received chemotherapy treatments and initially went into remission. He relapsed and fought this same battle a few more times until it returned as a brain tumor. Determined to beat it once and for all, Tom underwent a bone marrow transplant on June 22, 2017. During his 54 day stay in the hospital, Tom needed and received blood transfusions. Tom wants everyone to know it is the blood already on the shelf that saves lives and that is why we need YOU. We have yet to conquer cancer, but we can help each other through, by donating blood which will be needed by more cancer patients just like Tom.

Halloween Treats

#7 Lilac Lane • Centralia, Illinois

Make sure your family and friends get plenty of treats this Halloween. Below are some of my family favorites.

If you want something different, this house has personality! Low maintenance with brick and Bedford stone sitting on a scenic double lot with fenced in backyard. 3BR, 2½ Baths, formal living and dining room with built-in hutch and fireplaces. Also, family room with built-in book cases, bonus sun room, kitchen with a breakfast bar, utility room with linen closet and large pantry. Oversized 2-Car Garage. Also, Many Updates. A Must See!

6 medium apples 2 cups sugar 1 cup water

6 wooden skewers or sticks 2/3 cup light corn syrup Red food coloring

Wash and dry apples. Remove stem from each and insert a wooden skewer securely in its place. In a small heavy saucepan, dissolve sugar and corn syrup in water over medium heat. Raise heat and boil rapidly until syrup reaches 300° on a candy thermometer — the hard crack stage. (No thermometer? Drop a little of the mixture into very cold water; when removed, it will crack when tapped sharply.) Remove from heat and stir in enough food coloring to give a bright rosy color. Place saucepan in a large pan of hot water. Holding each apple by its skewer, dip into syrup until completely coated; place on a greased tray or cookie sheet to harden. Makes 6 candied apples.

Cream butter until soft; gradually add brown sugar, beating until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Sift flour, baking soda and salt together; gradually stir into egg mixture. Stir in milk and oatmeal: mix well and chill for a few hours. Roll out dough on a sheet of waxed paper until a little less than 1/4 inch thick. With a jack-o'-lantern cutter, cut out cookies and place about 1 inch apart on a lightly greased baking sheet. Use raisins to make eyes, nose and mouth on each cookie. Bake in a preheated 375° oven 10 minutes. Makes about 40 cookies. NOTE: Not all of the cookies need be shaped as jack-o'-lanterns. MATING TIME IS HERE, DON’T VEER FOR DEER ments, with over 70 percent of all crashes taking place at twilight or nighttime. In 2016, there were 14,759 motor vehicle crashes involving deer in Illinois, over one thousand crashes less than the 2015 total. There were 14,248 crashes that resulted in damage to property or vehicles only, down from the 15,431 in 2015. Personal injuries tallied 581 in 2016 versus 628 in 2015 and 569 in 2014. The number of fatalities dropped, from eight in 2015 to five in 2016. The top 10 Illinois counties for crashes involving deer in 2016: 1. Cook-439, 2. Madison4 1 5 , 3 . Wi l l - 3 8 9 , 4 . SOCIAL SECURITY ANNOUNCES 2.0 PERCENT BENEFIT INCREASE FOR 2018 Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 66 million Americans will increase 2.0 percent in 2018, the Social Security Administration announced recently. The 2.0 percent cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 61 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2018. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 29, 2017. (Note: some

people receive both Social Security and SSI benefits) The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social S ec urity tax (taxable maximum) will increase to

$128,700 from $127,200. Of the estimated 175 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2018, about 12 million will pay more because of the increase in the taxable maximum. In f o r m at i o n a b o u t Medicare changes for 2018, when announced, will be available at www.medicare. gov. The Social Security Act provides for how the COLA is calculated. follow these safe driving tips during mating season: • Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to deer crossing signs. • Scan the sides of the road for eye shine – the reflection of headlights in the eyes. • Slow down if you see deer. They travel in groups, so more are likely in the area. • Prepare for the unexpected. Deer can stop in the middle of the road or double back. • If a collision is inevitable, try to glance the vehicle off the deer and avoid swerving into the opposite lanes of traffic. Beyond Microchipping DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m fine with microchipping my pets. I have a 2-year-old collie mix, “Bard,” and a 5-year-old cat, “Millie,” and both are chipped. But I worry that if they get out of the house and get lost, I’ll have to rely on strangers getting them to a veterinarian or shelter to have their chip scanned. I’d like to take finding my pets into my own hands. -- Carl G., Madison, Wisconsin DEAR CARL: With the rise of the smartphone and an increase in small, wearable technology, you can take a more active role in finding your pets. A

microchip is an important component because unlike a collar, it won’t fall off, making it the best backup if your pet is lost. However, advanced pet technology is out there, and a huge number of pet owners are taking advantage of it. The Los Angeles Times reported that 43 percent of dog owners now own an electronic tracking device, based on an APPA survey. Tracking collars like the LinkAPC sync with a smartphone app that reports your dog’s location on demand. It includes a fitness tracker. That collar will run you almost $150, but there are budget trackers like the TrackR Bravo, a small device which costs just under $30 and attaches to your dog’s collar. Pet owner networking apps also are popular, allowing neighbors and friends to connect with each other through their pets. They can serve as places to ask for help in
