Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016.

A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children. the shelter, and I've been careful to take him out each morning. But his third day here he peed on that spot and he's gone there every day since. What can I do? — Wits' End in Maryland

Housetrained Puppy May Need a Refresher DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My new Beagle puppy, "Socks," keeps peeing in the same spot on the carpet every day. I thought he was housetrained when I adopted him from

DEAR WITS' END: This can happen with any dog at just about any age, even if it is well-housebroken. There are a number of reasons why — from health issues to anxiety. First, get Socks checked out at the vet to rule out any issues, like a urinary tract infection, that might cause

a lapse in housetraining. This is something you should do anytime there's a sudden change in a pet's behavior. Then you'll need to clean the area thoroughly to remove as much of the pee smell as possible — not just for your nose, but to stop Socks from identifying the area so easily as a place to pee. If he's peeing on carpet, you will likely need to replace that section as well as the padding underneath. Next, reintroduce a stricter routine for a while. That doesn't mean punish-

ing Socks for a housetraining mistake; rather, it means a tighter training routine for both of you. If you know the approximate time that he peed on the carpet, put him on a leash at that time and take him outside. Give him lots of praise when he pees outdoors. If you're not sure when he pees there, or can't be at home at the time, crating Socks during periods you're away may be helpful. Don't keep him in the crate for more than a couple hours at a time. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Sugar & Spice Fall Baking Sugar and spice and everything nice, that's what fall baking is made of. Let cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice, and nutmeg bring the sweet scents of autumn to the entire house.

Raisin-Cinnamon Rolls

1 (16 oz.) loaf frozen bread dough, thawed 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted and divided 1/2 cup sugar 2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Take The Shopper’s Weekly Wherever You Go.

1/3 cup raisins 2 T. chopped almonds, toasted 2 tsp. grated lemon rind 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar 2½ tsp. lemon juice

Roll dough on lightly floured surface to 14x8-inch rectangle. Brush surface of dough with 2 T. melted butter. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and next 4 ingredients in small bowl; sprinkle, over dough, leaving 1/2-inch border on all sides. Starting with long side, roll up jellyroll fashion. Pinch seam to seal (do not seal ends). Cut roll into 12 slices; place cut side down in a lightly greased 9-inch square pan. Brush with remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter. Cover and refrigerate 8 hours. Remove pan from refrigerator, and let rolls rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 50 minutes or until doubled in bulk. Bake rolls at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes. Combine powdered sugar and lemon juice; drizzle over warm rolls. Yield: 1 dozen.

Combine flour and next 4 ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with water, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix after each addition. Pour batter into lightly greased and floured 13x9x2-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Serve with Lemon Sauce, and garnish, if desired. Yield: 15 to 18 servings.

MANAGE PAIN WITH MASSAGE THERAPY Addiction to opiates is a growing problem in the United States and Canada. Pain relief therapies, such as massage therapy, can be viable alternatives to the prescription pain medicines that often serve as a gateway to illegal drugs such as heroin. Addiction to prescription painkillers is common. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that 4.7 million people in the United States are dependent on painkillers, the sale of which has increased by more than 300 percent since 1999. Retail pharmacies across Canada dispensed 19 million prescriptions for opioids in 2016, which was up slightly from 18.9 million in 2015, according to the health data company

QuintilesIMS. When prescriptions to oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl run out, many people turn to heroin as a less expensive and more readily available means of pain relief. NIDA says that up to 7 percent of people who are prescribed opiate or analgesic pain killers will become addicted. To help reduce the overprescribing epidemic and keep people from becoming addicted to pain meds, people can look for other ways to alleviate pain. Massage therapy is a viable option that can work wonders to improve flexibility and offer relief from pain in different parts of the body. In addition to alleviating pain, massage therapy can promote relax-

ation, reduce anxiety and improve quality of life. Research indicates that massage therapy can reduce the incidence and frequency of back pain, headache and leg pain and can even reduce stress and tension. Massage therapy can be an asset to those with myalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and other conditions. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that massage therapy affects the activity of certain genes, which directly reduces inflammation in muscles — the same results that would occur if a person took pain medication. Researchers tested people who exercised and received massages afterward against a control group, discovering

that “massage dampened the activity of proteins known as inflammatory cytokines, which cause inflammation and pain. It also increased levels of proteins that signal the muscles to produce more mitochondria, the cell structures that produce energy and help muscles recover from activity.” A review published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice noted that moderate pressure massage can lead to decreased cortisol levels, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Massage may help stimulate

serotonin products, improving mood and feelings of wellbeing. Also, according to AMTA, deeper massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues while helping the lymphatic system to flush away

waste products. It also eases tense and knotted muscles and stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility. Massage therapy can be a viable alternative for pain sufferers who are reluctant to take potentially addictive prescription pain medications.

CARING FOR DENTURES IMPROVES ORAL HEALTH

Proper dental care and oral hygiene is essential at all stages in life, even for people who have dentures, partials or implants. People with dentures must recognize that oral hygiene protects their dentures as well as their mouths. According to the American College of Prosthodontists, 35 million Americans do not have any teeth, while 11 percent of the population requires the use of a complete denture. In addition, 5 percent of the U.S. population wears a partial denture. The Canadian Denture & Implant Centres says that 16 percent of the population wear dentures. Removable dentures require care to keep them clean and in good repair. Servicing dentures also helps ensure wearers’ mouths stay healthy. Follow these guidelines to keep dentures clean. • Handle with care. Dentures are strong, but they are not impervious to damage. Treat them with care while handling, being sure not to bend or damage any clasps when cleaning, and try not to drop the dentures. When handling dentures, Colgate recommends standing over a folded towel or basin of water for added protection. • Brush daily. False teeth need to be brushed, so don’t

trade in your toothbrush just yet. Brushing will help remove food deposits and prevent staining. • Take a break. Remove dentures before going to bed and soak the dentures in warm water or special denture cleansers. Removing dentures for six to eight hours allows tissue inside the mouth to recover. Soaking helps to remove stains, bacteria and tartar. The Mayo Clinic notes that most dentures need to remain moist to keep their shape, so do not allow them to dry out. • Clean your mouth. While dentures are removed, use gauze or a soft toothbrush to clean the tongue, palate and cheeks. If you still have any natural teeth, use a soft-bristled brush to cleanse. Always rinse dentures before returning them to your mouth. • Schedule regular dental visits. Dentists can advise how frequently to have dentures checked for fit and professional cleaning. Loose dentures can cause sores and infection, so it’s best to address any issues regarding fitting promptly. Dentists also will inspect the inside of the mouth for signs of disease or irritation. • Eat healthy foods. Make sure to eat a well-balanced diet

to keep the body and mouth healthy. Cut up hard foods like fresh fruits and vegetables if dentures are impacting your ability to eat these foods. People of all ages rely on partial or complete dentures to maintain their smiles. Routine care is necessary to keep the dentures intact and mouths healthy.

IVES MAY CHALLENGE RAUNER IN GOP PRIMARY BY SCOTT REEDER State Rep. Jeanne Ives sounds like she’ll be a candidate for Illinois governor. The Wheaton Republican is one of the most conservative members of the General Assembly and she is hopping mad at Gov. Bruce Rauner who she contends is not trustworthy. Rauner angered many in his party by signing a bill last month providing state funding for elective abortions. He did this after promising multiple Catholic bishops and state lawmakers that he wouldn’t. â€œHe’s failed the integrity test. No one in the legislature believes a word he says,â€? Ives said.  If Ives enters the race, she would be the only candidate opposing abortion rights in either the Republican or Democrat gubernatorial primaries. â€œThe state is broke. We can’t afford to create another entitlement program, yet alone for something as morally reprehensible as abortion,â€? she said.  But Ives says her objection to Rauner goes beyond this.  For example, although he ran on a platform opposing “crony capitalismâ€? Rauner signed a measure giving a multibillion dollar bailout to Exelon, a power company.  Â

Are you starting to get the feeling that she really dislikes the governor? Yeah, me too. But it’s one thing to object to what the leader of your party is doing and it’s another thing to leave your safe seat in the legislature and challenge him. Ives said she hasn’t decided yet if she will run. But listening to her, it sure sounds like she is on the brink of diving in. But running and winning are two different things. And, sadly, money is the lifeblood of politics. Ives began the month with $8,488 in her campaign coffers, while Rauner had $65.5 million. Most of that money came from either himself or his billionaire buddy businessman Ken Griffin. That almost makes David and Goliath seem like an even contest. And the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, J. B. Pritzker, also is a billionaire who is self- funding. Could Ives beat not only Rauner but Pritzker? Mike Lawrence, a longtime statehouse observer and former senior advisor to Gov. Jim Edgar, is skeptical. “I don’t think she will win the primary, but I’m not JOHN LAUDER

STOP IN AND SEE ME FOR THE BEST DEAL ON YOUR NEXT NEW OR PRE-OWNED CAR, TRUCK OR SUV!

writing her off. I think if she runs, she will start out with a solid 30 percent of Republicans who vote in primaries. Farright conservatives have a disproportionate influence in primaries, he said.

Lawrence noted that when Edgar ran in the Republican primary in 1990 against Steve Baer, the relatively unknown Baer got more than 30 percent of the vote mainly from prolife voters angry that Edgar

Standing in the Shadow of Jesus What do you do when disaster and danger stalk you and things begin spinning out of control? Some may call 911, but others may call Psalm 91. Some call Psalm 91 the soldiers' Psalm. But Psalm 91 is a Psalm of comfort and protection, for those facing danger, disaster, and distress. To put this Psalm into effect, let your mind dwell on some key words. SHELTER. “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) When a disaster threatens, the wise will seek shelter. The greatest shelter is the Most High God. When the three Hebrew boys were delivered from the fiery furnace, King Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged that they were servants of the Most High God. When Daniel found shelter in the Most High God, he was delivered from the lion’s den. After seven years of insanity, God restored King Nebuchadnezzar and he praised the Most High God. (Daniel 4:1935) The Almighty is a shelter in the time of

storm. SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY. “Those who dwell in God’s shelter, find “rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) This is a rest of peace and faith. A shadow is silent, but evidence of a presence. The Almighty casts a big shadow. Rest in Him. (Matthew 11:28) Country artist, and a judge on “The Voice,” Blake Shelton said that he had a dream of Jesus that affected his life. He was inspired to write a song and produce a video entitled “Standing in the Shadow of Jesus.” Like Blake, you may have made many mistakes in your life, but when you stand in the shadow of the cross of Jesus, His grace and mercy covers every sin and insecurity. SECURITY. “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:2) When disasters hit, many times

we feel open and exposed. Confess the Lord is your refuge. Notice the personal reference to “my God”.. When you know the Lord personally and intimately, you will have a solid trust in God. SURELY. “Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare.” (Psalm 91:3) David is talking about a solid assurance found only in the Almighty God. A fowler would set a trap to surprise unsuspecting birds. Peter says our enemy, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, but we have the assurance of God’s protection. (I Peter 5:8-10) SHIELD. “He will cover you with his feathers . . . his faithfulness will be your shield.” (Psalm 91:4) As a boy, I remember seeing a chicken hawk soaring overhead, its shadow covering the ground. The mother hen would begin clucking and her chicks would come running to take refuge under her wings. God is faithful. He will not abandon you. Find refuge under his wings, safe from all fear and harm. (Psalm 91:5-7) SAY. “If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge’ and make the Most High

your dwelling.” (Psalm 91:9-10) Notice the importance of our mouth in acknowledging the Lord as our refuge and salvation. (Psalm 91:2, 9-10, 14; Romans 10:9) SURROUNDED BY ANGELS. “For He will command His angels concerning you.” (Psalm 91:11-12) You are not alone. There is an unseen world of heavenly host s u r ro u n d i n g y o u . (Hebrews 1:14) God created angels to minister to the heirs of salvation. S A LVA T I O N . “Because he loves me . . . I will rescue him . . . He will call on me and I will answer him . . . and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16) We see two conditions to God’s salvation and deliverance: love God and call to him. To those who do, God will show his salvation. “For a helmet put on the hope of salvation.” (I Thessalonians 5:8) When disaster strikes and distress stalks you, what will you do? Stand in the shadow of Jesus, for he is mighty to save. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Kiss My Glass The game has changed — all of them — and it's now up to ownership to understand the risks that fans are now being subjected to for no apparent reason. When slap shots started to dent people's heads in the NHL, things like helmets and plexiglass came into vogue. It took a few deaths before baseball moved to wearing helmets at bat. Football is struggling to figure out how to protect its players, but the NBA's plexiglass backboards have worked pretty well insofar as not obstructing a fan's view or sending a splinter into someone's arm. But we have a problem in

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area

Major League Baseball. Times have changed, and the danger that modern athletes wielding supercharged bats at superfast balls is literally ruining lives. A Cubs fan is suing because he took a foul off his eyeball, blinding him and subjecting him to a life of migraines. A little girl was smashed in the face at a Yankees game during the pennant race. Busted bats are stabbing people in the stands. Hey, baseball, this has got to stop. The game has fundamentally changed. Baseball is now a power game where seemingly everybody is swinging maple bats and pitchers are blowing 100 mph-plus fastballs with astonishing regularity. This was never the case before. Fans used to cheer bunts. Slow balls covered in tobacco spit were splattering off of catcher's gloves. There wasn't even a net behind home plate. It was, literally a different ballgame.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good time to speak out on a difficult situation. You’re known for your honesty, so people will listen and, perhaps, begin to make long-needed changes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s sharp business sense alerts you to question the positions of those trying to push the Bull into a deal. Demand to see proof of what they profess. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your quick thinking helps you get out of a troubling situation that suddenly was thrust upon you. Later on, you can expect to learn more about why it happened. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel you’ve dotted all your i’s and crossed all your t’s regarding that upcoming deal. But there might be some facts you’ve ignored. Check again. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Time for the Lion to be more physically active. It will help shake off any lingering Leonine lethargy and restore your energy levels, so you’ll be prepared for what lies ahead. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Helping those in need at this time is laudable. But don’t ignore your own needs, especially where it concerns your health. A medical checkup is a wise move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good news: Your outspoken

Then in the 1980s, strikeout king Nolan Ryan was clocked throwing faster than anyone ever before by judges at the Guinness Book of World Records. By the '90s, he was still throwing 100 mph on the mound as pitchers like Greg Maddux posted ERAs that rivaled Cy Young's. An anomaly would be a guy like M a r k Wo h l e r s , Ky l e Farnsworth and Neftali Perez ... guys who could throw 100 mph with regularity but had a hard time keeping the ball over the plate and in the park. Today, that's not the case. Seemingly everyone and their little brother throws 100-plus mph. Take Luis Severino for the Yankees, throwing 103-mph fastballs after 130 pitches in the playoffs this season, only to give way to relievers who also threw 100plus mph fastballs. A deflection is enough to maim anyone in the stands for life. Yet baseball, soooo open to

views about a controversial on-thejob situation could find unexpectedly strong support from a most unlikely workplace faction. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to draw on your reservoir of spiritual strength to help someone special through a difficult time. Your loving attitude makes all the difference. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your proven leadership qualities make you the perfect person to take on an important workplace task. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although some compromise might need to be reached regarding your stand on an important issue, you’ll still be able to get the most crucial points across. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A chance to make a career change carries both positive and uncertain possibilities. Best advice: Check it out thoroughly and don’t be rushed into a decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re still a staunch supporter of one side of an important issue. But be prepared to deal with new information that could cause you to question your current stand. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re perceptive and quick to act when you sense that someone needs help. You are an always-dependable friend. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

change (sarcasm), can't seem to figure out how to protect fans. A guy is going blind, babies are getting smashed to the face, but baseball is worried that netting will "ruin the view." Here's a clue for you owners: plexiglass. The NHL figured that out decades ago. Guess what? That won't ruin the view, and it will solve your problems and probably save lives as players get bigger and stronger each passing year. When Todd Frazier ripped that foul ball with an exit velocity of something like 108 mph into a toddler's face, baseball players literally put their hands to their mouth, took a knee and cried. Do I even need to say it? THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL. Fix it before someone fixes it for you in a court of law.
