tonishing regularity. This was never the case before. Fans used to cheer bunts. Slow balls covered in tobacco spit were splattering off of catcher's gloves. There wasn't even a net behind home plate. It was, literally a different ballgame. Then in the 1980s, strikeout king Nolan Ryan was clocked throwing faster than anyone ever before by judges at the Guinness Book of World Records. By the '90s, he was still throwing 100 mph on the mound as pitchers like Greg Maddux posted ERAs that rivaled Cy Young's. An anomaly would be a guy like Mark Wohlers, Kyle Farnsworth and Neftali Perez ... guys who could throw 100 mph with regularity but had a hard time keeping the ball over the plate and in the park. Today, that's not the case. Seemingly everyone and their little brother throws 100-plus mph. Take Luis Severino for the Yankees, throwing 103-mph fastballs after 130 pitches in the playoffs this season, only to give way to relievers who also

threw 100-plus mph fastballs. A deflection is enough to maim anyone in the stands for life. Yet baseball, soooo open to change (sarcasm), can't seem to figure out how to protect fans. A guy is going blind, babies are getting smashed to the face, but baseball is worried that netting will "ruin the view." Here's a clue for you owners: plexiglass. The NHL figured that out decades ago. Guess what? That won't ruin the view, and it will solve your problems and probably save lives as players get bigger and stronger each passing year. When Todd Frazier ripped that foul ball with an exit velocity of something like 108 mph into a toddler's face, baseball players literally put their hands to their mouth, took a knee and cried. Do I even need to say it? THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL. Fix it before someone fixes it for you in a court of law. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

The game has changed — all of them — and it's now up to ownership to understand the risks that fans are now being subjected to for no apparent reason. When slap shots started to dent people's heads in the NHL, things like helmets and plexiglass came into vogue. It took a few deaths before baseball moved to wearing helmets at bat. Football is struggling to figure out how to protect its players, but the NBA's plexiglass backboards have worked pretty well insofar as not obstructing a fan's view or sending a splinter into someone's arm. But we have a problem in

Major League Baseball. Times have changed, and the danger that modern athletes wielding supercharged bats at superfast balls is literally ruining lives. A Cubs fan is suing because he took a foul off his eyeball, blinding him and subjecting him to a life of migraines. A little girl was smashed in the face at a Yankees game during the pennant race. Busted bats are stabbing people in the stands. Hey, baseball, this has got to stop. The game has fundamentally changed. Baseball is now a power game where seemingly everybody is swinging maple bats and pitchers are blowing 100 mph-plus fastballs with as-

STATE REP. JEANNE IVES MAY CHALLENGE BRUCE RAUNER IN GOP PRIMARY BY SCOTT REEDER

would be the only candidate opposing abortion rights in either the Republican or Democrat gubernatorial primaries. “The state is broke. We can’t afford to create another entitlement program, yet alone for something as morally reprehensible as abortion,” she said. But Ives says her objection to Rauner goes beyond this. For example, although he ran on a platform opposing “crony capitalism” Rauner signed a measure giving a multibillion dollar bailout to Exelon, a power company. Are you starting to get the feeling that she really

dislikes the governor? Yeah, me too. But it’s one thing to object to what the leader of your party is doing and it’s another thing to leave your safe seat in the legislature and challenge him. Ives said she hasn’t decided yet if she will run. But listening to her, it sure sounds like she is on the brink of diving in. But running and winning are two different things. And, sadly, money is the lifeblood of politics. Ives began the month with $8,488 in her campaign coffers, while Rauner had $65.5 million. Most of that money came from either himself or his billionaire

PLUMMER ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR ILLINOIS SENATE Local businessman and Vice President of R.P. Lumber Jason Plummer is officially announcing his candidacy today for the Illinois State Senate. He is running to fill an open seat in the 54th District. Plummer’s campaign will focus on providing the people of Southern Illinois access to quality jobs, lower taxes and safer neighborhoods in the wake of the opioid epidemic and related crime wave that threatens the health, safety, and welfare of communities across the state. “The people of Southern Illinois absolutely need someone who shares their values and can be a strong, independent, and conservative voice in Springfield,” said Plummer. “My family and I built R.P. Lumber and several other businesses here because this is our home. I love Southern Illinois and I see first-hand the hard work, honesty, and integrity practiced every day by people throughout our communities. Unfortunately, our values and our people seem to have been forgotten by politicians in Springfield.” This summer, the legislature pushed for a vote that

raised the Illinois state income tax by 32% without enacting any significant spending reforms. Illinois families are reportedly paying the highest overall taxes in the nation. “Illinois politicians are harming working people by pushing failed policies that make it harder to start a business, earn a living, or just put food on the table. I believe the powerful work ethic and traditional values of the people in Southern Illinois are what can actually change our state for the better.” If elected, Plummer supports lowering and capping out-of-control property taxes, will fight to reduce the regulations that destroy quality jobs throughout Southern Illinois, will be a staunch advocate for giving law enforcement the tools they need to win the war against crime, and promises to represent the strong family values of Southern Illinois. “I want voters to know that I will always defend the rights of the unborn. Recently, a law was passed that forces Illinois taxpayers to foot the bill for thousands of abortions. I pledge that when I go to Springfield

I will file a bill that repeals this law and bans taxpayer funding of abortions in our state. I’m running because the people of Southern Illinois are sending a clear message to Springfield politicians: we won’t be ignored and we are done paying for a broken, morally bankrupt system that we never wanted. I will deliver that message at every opportunity, loud and clear.” Jason was born and raised in Southern Illinois and lives with his wife, Shannon, in Edwardsville. In addition to being Vice President at R.P. Lumber, Plummer is an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserves, is a member of the First Baptist Church of Maryville, serves on the board of Carmi Baptist Children’s Home, and is very active in several other civic, business, and charitable organizations. In 2010, Plummer was the Republican nominee for Lt. Governor, fighting for conservative principles on the ticket with Bill Brady. Politics & Opinions continues on page 5

buddy businessman Ken Griffin. That almost makes David and Goliath seem like an even contest. And the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, J. B. Pritzker, also is a billionaire who is selffunding. Could Ives beat not only Rauner but Pritzker? Mike Lawrence, a longtime statehouse observer and former senior advisor to Gov. Jim Edgar, is skeptical. “I don’t think she will win the primary, but I’m not writing her off. I think if she

runs, she will start out with a solid 30 percent of Republicans who vote in primaries. Far-right conservatives have a disproportionate influence in primaries,” he said. Lawrence noted that when Edgar ran in the Republican primary in 1990 against Steve Baer, the relatively unknown Baer got more than 30 percent of the vote mainly from pro-life voters angry that Edgar supported abortion rights. So, can a middle-class mother of five beat two of the wealthiest men in Illinois?

She faces long odds. But she seems undeterred. And there may be a certain populist appeal to someone who isn’t among the wealthiest Illinoisans running. When pressed about her candidacy, Ives said her 8th grade daughter told her, “Mom, I thought you were going to announce last week.” Scott Reeder is a veteran statehouse journalist. He works as a freelance reporter in the Springfield area and produces the podcast Suspect Convictions. He can be reached at ScottReeder1965@ gmail.com

State Rep. Jeanne Ives sounds like she’ll be a candidate for Illinois governor. The Wheaton Republican is one of the most conservative members of the General Assembly and she is hopping mad at Gov. Bruce Rauner who she contends is not trustworthy. Rauner angered many in his party by signing a bill last month providing state funding for elective abortions. He did this after promising multiple Catholic bishops and state lawmakers that he wouldn’t. “He’s failed the integrity test. No one in the legislature believes a word he says,” Ives said. If Ives enters the race, she

2018 ILLINOIS FISHING TOURNAMENT APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED BY IDNR BEGINNING NOV. 1 Fishing tournament organizers can begin applying for 2018 tournament permits on November 1, 2017. Applications can be submitted to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources through IDNR fishing tournament online accounts and through the I Fish Illinois website at https://www.ifishillinois. org/tournament/index.php. Catch results from 2017 tournaments must be

entered before fishing clubs and tournament trails will be allowed to request tournament dates for 2018. Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. “The Illinois DNR is grateful for the compliance that our tournament anglers have shown with this process of online tournament applications and reporting,” said Dan Stephenson, fisheries chief for the IDNR. “We also

salute the staff at the Illinois Natural History Survey, which oversees the tournament permit system.” Tournament fishing is extremely popular in Illinois. For 2017, nearly 3,000 applications for fishing tournaments were received. The catch data submitted by tournament organizers is vital information needed for the management of the waters they fish.

GIFT CARDS: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW One of the lesser-known roles of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office involves gift cards. Some unused gift cards after a certain period of time are considered unclaimed property. As such, the value of these cards is surrendered to the treasurer’s office. There is big money in these cards. Barron’s reports that shoppers purchased $130 billion in gift cards in 2015. However, the surrendering of these cards to the treasurer’s office means that someone has been deprived of their use. That is why the Treasurer’s Office offers the following advice: • Know that the two most common types of cards are retail gift cards and bank gift cards. Retail gift cards only are redeemable at the specific retailer or restaurant that issued the card. Bank gift cards, which carry a payment network

such as American Express or Visa, can be used at any location that accepts that specific brand. • Resist the urge to save the card for a rainy day. Doing so may increase the likelihood that some of the card’s value will be consumed by fees. Instead, use the card and set aside an equal amount of cash for a rainy day. • For example, consider that while money on a typical gift card cannot expire for at least five years, depending upon the circumstances, inactivity fees can begin in as little as 12 months. Therefore, it is possible that inactivity fees could consume the cash value of a card before the five year window has expired. • When purchasing a gift card, buy from a known and trusted source. Be wary of online auction sites. Read the fine print to de-

termine if there are shipping or handling fees. • Consider the company’s location and reputation before purchasing. A retail gift card for someone who does not live near a store’s location might not be convenient. Also, a store that files for bankruptcy or goes out-of-business might not accept a gift card. • Treat a gift card like cash. If lost or stolen, report it to law enforcement. Contact the card’s issuer to determine if a replacement card is possible and at what cost. Today, the state treasurer’s office holds more than $2 billion in unclaimed property. Because our records are updated twice each year, we encourage residents to frequently check the I-Cash database, which can be found here or at www.illinoistreasurer. gov.

CANADA GEESE GIVE HUNTERS THE SLIP BY HIDING OUT IN CHICAGO It’s open season for Canada geese in Illinois from mid-October to midJanuary. Unfortunately for hunters, Canada geese are finding a new way to stay out of the line of fire. Rather than being “sitting ducks” in a rural pond, they’re setting up residence in the city. University of Illinois ornithologist Mike Ward says he and a team of researchers conducted a recent study to try to find out why there were so many Canada geese in Chicago in the winter. “We thought the geese would fly to forage on nearby agricultural fields during the day, then fly back to the city to roost, but that wasn’t the case. What we learned is that they weren’t going to the city for food, they were going there because there were no hunters,” he explains. The study finds that 85 percent of the Canada geese wintered in the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area, and none made foraging flights to agricultural fields within or outside of the urban area. Their arrival demonstrated uncanny timing as well. Approximately 70 percent of the geese the researchers were tracking returned to the Chicagoland area prior to open hunting seasons. Ward says survival rate was also high. “All of the Canada geese that spent the winter in Chicago survived, whereas half of the birds that decided to leave the Chicagoland area and go to areas where hunting is allowed, and more prevalent, were harvested.” According to Ward, the birds’ ability to make use of

nontraditional habitats in the city, such as green spaces, rooftops, and rail yards, and avoidance of agricultural fields suggests Canada geese may be minimizing risk rather than maximizing energy intake by using urban areas during winter. “During mid-November through late February 2014–2016, we captured and attached transmitters to 41 geese within the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area,” Ward says. “To each goose, we attached an aluminum band and a GPS transmitter attached to a white plastic waterfowl neck collar.” The birds were tracked to determine habitat selection and survival. As the winter months grew colder and the snowdepth increased, the geese chose green spaces 55 percent less often. Instead, they increased their selection of industrial urban areas, such as water treatment facilities and deepwater areas within shipping canals, by over 140 percent. Because Canada geese have become a nuisance to residential and urban areas, Ward says the research project also involved goose–aircraft collision risk. “We focused capture efforts where geese concentrated in fall and winter near Midway International Airport, including large parks, cemeteries, and the Stickney Wa t e r Reclamation Plant.” With the tendency of Canada geese to stay put combined with their high survival rate when they choose to spend winter in the city, Ward says managing goose populations in

the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area may be challenging. “Dense concentrations of geese in urban areas can pose threats to humans, including contamination of water sources, aggressive behavior toward humans, disease transmission, and strikes with aircraft,” Ward says. “Geese are the largest bird commonly struck by aircraft in North America and were responsible for 1,403 recorded bird strikes to civil aircraft from 1990 to 2012.” The study notes that goose–aircraft strikes destroyed a $190 million U.S. Air Force aircraft, resulting in 24 human deaths, and led to U.S. Airways Flight 1549 crash-landing in the Hudson River in New York after striking multiple subarctic-breeding Canada geese. Geese can also pose risks to human health and safety in urban areas, especially during winter months when large flocks congregate around limited resources and there is a strong disincentive (i.e., lower survival probability) for emigration outside of the city. So, how can the geese be encouraged to leave? “We have future studies that will investigate the best ways to harass geese to make them leave the city,” Ward says. “We are approaching this from an energy use perspective. If the geese cannot find good sources of food and the harassment causes them to use energy, they may be forced to leave the city in search of food in agricultural fields.”

Standing in the Shadow of Jesus What do you do when disaster and danger stalk you and things begin spinning out of control? Some may call 911, but others may call Psalm 91. Some call Psalm 91 the soldiers Psalm. But Psalm 91 is a Psalm of comfort and protection, for those facing danger, disaster, and distress. To put this Psalm into effect, let your mind dwell on some key words. SHELTER. “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) When a disaster threatens, the wise will seek shelter. The greatest shelter is the Most High God. When the three Hebrew boys were delivered from the fiery furnace, King Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged that they were servants of the Most High God. When Daniel

found shelter in the Most High God, he was delivered from the lion’s den. After seven years of insanity, God restored King Nebuchadnezzar and he praised the Most High God. (Daniel 4:19-35) The Almighty is a shelter in the time of storm. SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY. “Those who dwell in God’s shelter, find “rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) This is a rest of peace and faith. A shadow is silent, but evidence of a presence. The Almighty casts a big shadow. Rest in Him. (Matthew 11:28) Country artist, and a judge on “The Voice”, Blake Shelton said that he had a dream of Jesus that affected his life. He was inspired to write a song and produce a video entitled “Standing in the Shadow of Jesus”. Like Blake, you may have made many mistakes in your life, but when you stand in the shadow of the cross of Jesus, His grace and mercy

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area covers every sin and insecurity. SECURITY. “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:2) When disasters hit, many times we feel open and exposed. Confess the Lord is your refuge. Notice the personal reference to “my God”. When you know the Lord personally and intimately, you will have a solid trust in God. SURELY. “Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare.” (Psalm 91:3) David is talking about a solid assurance found only in the Almighty God. A fowler would set a trap to surprise unsuspecting birds. Peter says our enemy, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, but we have the assurance of God’s protection. (I Peter 5:8-10) SHIELD. “He will cover you with his feathers . . . his faithfulness will be your shield.” (Psalm 91:4) As a boy, I remember seeing a chicken hawk soaring overhead, its shadow covering the ground. The mother hen would begin clucking and her chicks would come running to take refuge under her wings. God is faithful. He will not abandon you. Find refuge under his wings, safe from all fear and harm. (Psalm

91:5-7) SAY. “If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge’ and make the Most High your dwelling.” (Psalm 91:9-10) Notice the importance of our mouth in acknowledging the Lord as our refuge and salvation. (Psalm 91:2, 9-10, 14; Romans 10:9) SU R ROU N DE D B Y ANGELS. “For He will command His angels concerning you.” (Psalm 91:1112) You are not alone. There is an unseen world of heavenly host surrounding you. (Hebrews 1:14) God created angels to minister to the heirs of salvation. SALVATION. “Because he loves me . . . I will rescue him . . . He will call on me and I will answer him . . . and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16) We see two conditions to God’s salvation and deliverance: love God and call to him. To those who do, God will show his salvation. “For a helmet put on the hope of salvation.” (I Thessalonians 5:8) When disaster strikes and distress stalks you, what will you do? Stand in the shadow of Jesus, for he is mighty to save. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

said Rep. Cavaletto. The hospital employs 320 individuals and is the 2nd largest employer in Fayette County. As of today the Comptroller has more than $369 million on hand that can be used to pay back bills.

WINNERS IN THE THIRD GHOST IN A GRAVEYARD HUNT BY JESSICA HANKS

A winner has surfaced and they are in fiddlers green! The treasure hunts that have captivated Marion County residents for months has its third winner. The third hunt was named "Rock Around the Clock" and featured a map that had a large clock centered on it. The map stated "I've hidden a chest, I've hidden a key, Now it's a rock, this is map number three." As mentioned last week, the hunters were in search of a rock that had "Around the Clock Winner" sandblasted on the bottom. It took three weeks to find and was discovered by a pair of hunters who were out hunting with their parents. Morgan and Kyle Kurwicki, ages 9 and 12, found the w i n n i n g r o c k at Hillcrest Cemetery, along the small pond located near the entrance of the cemetery. Mentioned in last week's Shoppers Weekly, the Ghost in a Graveyard Facebook

page started months ago and since has had three hunts. The first was named "Ghost in a Graveyard," the second "Where the Bell's Toll," and the latest hunt was named "Rock Around the Clock," with each hunt having a larger treasure than the last one. Morgan and Kyle took home $1,000 worth of silver this weekend! The silver was purchased through sponsorships by local businesses, which included O.M.G. Graphics, Country Bob's sauces and seasonings, C&S Construction, Rick's Pool Service, Monken Sales Consultant Daniel Niederhofer, Low Cash Auto Sales, Rockin Rolls Gourmet Ice Cream, and Jim's Coin Shoppe. The treasure chest and silver was housed by Jim's Coin Shoppe, who has seen a surge of foot traffic into his establishment since Rick asked him to participate as the treasure keeper. On the Facebook page many hunters have

spoken about pleasant encounters they've had with Jim and gratitude toward Rick McDonald for an adventure they can't seem to get enoug h of. Many hunters are begging for another hunt, and one seems to be in the works according to posts made by Rick McDonald. The S h opp e r s We e k l y wishes fair winds to everyone on the next

hunt which is planned to take place in the spring. For updates continue to read The Shoppers Weekly and follow "Ghost in A Graveyard" on facebook. Also, a special thanks to those who sponsored the hunts. For more information on sponsoring the next hunt, contact Rick McDonald on the Ghost in a Graveyard facebook page.

I thought he was housetrained when I adopted him from the shelter, and I've been careful to take him out each morning. But his third day here he peed on that spot and he's gone there every day since. What can I do? — Wits' End in Maryland DEAR WITS' END: This can happen with any dog at just about any age, even if it is well-housebroken. There are a number

Pets Of The Week

of reasons why — from health issues to anxiety. First, get Socks checked out at the vet to rule out any issues, like a urinary tract infection, that might cause a lapse in housetraining. This is something you should do anytime there's a sudden change in a pet's behavior. Then you'll need to clean the area thoroughly to remove as much of the pee smell as possible — not just for your nose, but to stop Socks from identifying the area so easily as a place to pee. If he's peeing on carpet, you will likely need to replace that section as well as the padding underneath. Next, reintroduce a stricter routine for a while. That doesn't mean punishing Socks for a housetraining mistake; rather, it means a tighter training routine for both of you. If you know the approximate time that he peed on the carpet, put him on a leash at that time

FLU AND YOU

STRATEGIES TO AVOID HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN Staying fit during the holiday season can be quite challenging, even for the most ardent fitness enthusiasts and disciplined caloriecounters. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, many people are offered a wide assortment of foods, beverages and other indulgences — typically in mass quantities. According to researchers at Stanford University, although the average person only gains around one pound during the holiday season, quite frequently that pound sticks around, and those extra pounds add up year after year. As a result, it doesn’t take too many years of holiday bundt cakes to gain a considerable amount of weight. Holiday season weight gain is not unique to the United States and Canada. Investigators at Tampere University of Technology in Finland tracked weight gained in the United States, Germany and Japan during those countries’ festive times and found that each country’s participants gained weight, particularly during

the holiday season. Annual holiday weight gain can contribute to weight-based problems such as obesity, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. The holiday season might not be the best time to start a diet, but holiday eating does not have to derail healthy lifestyles. The following are ways to avoid holiday weight gain and still enjoy all of the parties, adventures and time spent with friends and family. • Focus on festivity instead of food. When hosting holiday festivities, make the bulk of the celebration about an activity rather than food. If guests are focused on fun, such as a sing-a-long, dancing or treetrimming, they may be less likely to overeat. • Don’t show up starving. Eat a light, healthy snack before participating in any holiday revelry. Hunger pangs may drive one straight to the buffet table. • Survey your options prior to eating. Guests should scope out the food choices and then make the smartest selections possible.

INFORMATION FROM THE MARION COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Avoid creamy sauces, greasy foods and those that are heavy on cheese. Fill up on vegetables and then you won’t feel bad about splurging on a dessert. • Go sparingly on alcohol. People seldom realize how quickly calories from beverages can add up. A 12-ounce glass of beer has about 150 calories, a five ounce glass of red wine has about 125 calories and a 1.5-ounce shot of gin, rum, vodka, whiskey, or tequila has about 100 calories, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Furthermore, alcohol lowers inhibitions, so you may be more likely to overindulge in more spirits or extra food when intoxicated. • You can’t buy back calories with exercise. Putting in a marathon exercise session the next day probably will not undo the damage done from overeating the night before. Maintain a consistent workout schedule all through the holidays. Holiday weight gain is not inevitable for those who take control and exercise discipline.

MANAGE PAIN WITH MASSAGE THERAPY Addiction to opiates is a growing problem in the United States and Canada. Pain relief therapies, such as massage therapy, can be viable alternatives to the prescription pain medicines that often serve as a gateway to illegal drugs such as heroin. Addiction to prescript i on p ai n k i l l e rs i s common. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that 4.7 million people in the United States are dependent on painkillers, the sale of which has increased by more than 300 percent since 1999. Retail pharmacies across Canada dispensed 19 million prescriptions for opioids in 2016, which was up slightly from 18.9 million in 2015, according to the health data company QuintilesIMS. When prescriptions to oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl run out, many people turn to heroin as a less expensive and more readily available means of pain relief. NIDA says that up to 7 percent of people who are prescribed opiate or analgesic pain killers will become addicted. To help reduce the overprescribing epidemic and keep people from becoming addicted to pain meds, people can look for other ways to alleviate pain. Massage therapy is a viable option that can work wonders to improve flexibility and offer relief from pain in different

parts of the body. In addition to alleviating pain, massage therapy can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety and improve quality of life. Research indicates that massage therapy can reduce the incidence and frequency of back pain, headache and leg pain and can even reduce stress and tension. Massage therapy can be an asset to those with myalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and other conditions. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that massage therapy affects the activity of certain genes, which directly reduces inflammation in muscles — the same results that would occur if a person took pain medication. Researchers tested people who exercised and received massages afterward against a control group, discovering that “massage dampened the activity of proteins known as inflammatory cytokines, which cause inflammation and pain. It also increased levels of proteins

that signal the muscles to produce more mitochondria, the cell structures that produce energy and help muscles recover from activity.” A review published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice noted that moderate pressure massage can lead to decreased cortisol levels, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Massage may help stimulate serotonin products, improving mood and feelings of well-being. Also, according to AMTA, deeper massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to

body tissues while helping the lymphatic system to flush away waste products. It also eases tense and knotted muscles and stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility. Massage therapy can be a viable alternative for pain sufferers who are reluctant to take potentially addictive prescription pain medications.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good time to speak out on a difficult situation. You’re known for your honesty, so people will listen and, perhaps, begin to make long-needed changes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s sharp business sense alerts you to question the positions of those trying to push the Bull into a deal. Demand to see proof of what they profess. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your quick thinking helps you get out of a troubling situation that suddenly was thrust upon you. Later on, you can expect to learn more about why it happened. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel you’ve dotted all your i’s and crossed all your t’s regarding that upcoming deal. But there might be some facts you’ve ignored. Check again. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Time for the Lion to be more physically active. It will help shake off any lingering Leonine lethargy and restore your energy levels, so you’ll be prepared for what lies ahead. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Helping those in need at this time is laudable. But don’t ignore your own needs, especially where it concerns your health. A medical checkup is a wise move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good news: Your outspoken

views about a controversial on-thejob situation could find unexpectedly strong support from a most unlikely workplace faction. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to draw on your reservoir of spiritual strength to help someone special through a difficult time. Your loving attitude makes all the difference. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your proven leadership qualities make you the perfect person to take on an important workplace task. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although some compromise might need to be reached regarding your stand on an important issue, you’ll still be able to get the most crucial points across. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A chance to make a career change carries both positive and uncertain possibilities. Best advice: Check it out thoroughly and don’t be rushed into a decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re still a staunch supporter of one side of an important issue. But be prepared to deal with new information that could cause you to question your current stand. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re perceptive and quick to act when you sense that someone needs help. You are an always-dependable friend. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
