That's because Dylan — be it Dylan Thomas or Bob himself — is to the Village as Mickey Mouse is to Disneyland. make the postseason, or every time Duke is the preseason No. 1 ranked team in the coaches poll, I am reminded of that book. The Yankees are supposed to win every year, as Hal Steinbrenner and all Yankee fans remind us ad nauseum. But sometimes I think the coaches are just too afraid not to pick Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils for fear of some cosmic retribution. And while Duke lands atop the preseason poll, the band gets back together for another tour. North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky are never far behind Duke on the main stage. The poll does little else than remind Duke that they forever have a target on their back, and the rest of the league's teams all rally around that familiar song: "Beat Duke." In the first few weeks of the season, faced with tough challenges in the ACC, the Blue Devils usually do get knocked off the top perch, only to reappear as the odds-on favorite to win the NCAA tournament in March.

I don't know about you, but I always play three brackets — one picks my alma mater, another picks who I think will win (thus dooming that team to never win) and the third one picks Duke. That's not just practical sense and experience talking, it's sound investment advice. If I had invested heavily in Duke, North Carolina and Kansas for the past 20 years, it would have far outpaced the growth of my 401(k) (and likely a lot of yours, too). Following behind Duke in the poll this year is Michigan State (great coach), Kansas (great players), Kentucky (great freshman about to be in the NBA next season) and Arizona (great logo). It's the same old song, and if you have any question that any one of those teams can or cannot win it all this year, well, don't think twice, it's all right. Jason Plummer and Sheriff Jeff Brown overdoses in Illinois and on October 26th, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a national health emergency.1 “This is obviously a very complex and difficult issue,” Sheriff Brown stated when asked about the rise in opioid use. “The economy plays an important role, and the relationship between joblessness and addiction is strong. What I want to see from elected officials is a plan to create quality jobs and a willingness to partner with local law enforcement agencies to coordinate a regional approach to reducing opioid dependency, educating young people, and
stemming the flow of drugs into our neighborhoods. Jason is a job creator, served his country, and is strongly committed to these goals and that’s why I support his candidacy for state senate.” Jeff Brown has served as Sheriff of Bond County since 1994 and is a veteran of the Illinois army National Guard and Air Force Reserves, where he served as a special agent providing protective services for military leaders and other dignitaries. Sheriff Brown resides in Greenville. 1 The Editorial Board, “Illinois vs. the opioid epidemic,” The Chicago Tribune, September 11, 2017, Opinion.

Bond County Sheriff Jeff Brown has signed on to serve as chairman of Jason Plummer’s campaign for state senate in the 54th district. Plummer, who announced his candidacy last month, praises Sheriff Brown and says law enforcement will be an integral part of the campaign. “Rural Illinois has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic and related crime. I am honored that Sheriff Brown and other law enforcement officials are joining with me to develop policies that can confront these problems head on. I am a big believer in surrounding yourself with the best people and Sheriff Brown’s leadership and expertise are highly respected in the law enforcement community. I will rely heavily on his knowledge of the issues going forward.” Plummer, an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserves and Vice President of R.P. Lumber, has made fighting crime and the spread of opioid addiction a central message of his senate campaign. Last year alone 1,889 people died from opioid

For generations our men and women in uniform have continued to serve our great Nation with honor and courage, often at great personal cost. Their service has guaranteed us our freedoms. Because of the commitment and professionalism of Americas Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen, we are a free nation and our fighting forces remain unparalleled anywhere in the world. Throughout our history we have witnessed remarkable examples of their selfless acts. They’ve brought freedom and hope to millions of people around the globe. The true number of people they have liberated cannot be calculated and
the number of memorials doesn’t begin to represent the true scope of service our veterans have provided. The debt owed to our nation’s Veterans is one we cannot ever fully repay and it is imperative that on this Veterans Day, we take this day to keep alive the sacrifices and deeds of our nation’s veterans. I encourage each of us to pause and think about the contributions millions of veterans have made in defense of our nation’s security. Seek out a veteran you know, shake his or her hand and say thank you. Please also keep those service members deployed around the globe and their families serving at home, in your thoughts and

CENTRAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH TO HOLD 17TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER Central Christian Church is holding their 21st annual free Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, November 23 at the church, located at 301 North 10th Street in Mt. Vernon, according to Randy Sells, pastor at Central Christian Church. The dinner will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Over 200 volunteers from the church and surrounding area will take time away from their families to make sure no one has to spend the Thanksgiving holiday alone. The volunteers include youth all the way up to senior citizens. Their duties include cooking, serving,
cleaning up, and making everyone feel welcome. The dinner was originally started by a local physician. When he was unable to host the dinner. Steve Reynolds, a dedicated church member took over the tradition. “Steve realized that the long standing tradition was a great need in the community,” Sells said. The first year the church fed about 100 people. In 2016, the dinner hosted around 1,800 people. Steve Reynolds and his fellow hospitality team at the church will be cooking enough food to feed 2,000 people this year. The church
also delivers dinners for the Jefferson County meals on wheels program, Lifeboat Alliance, local police and fire departments. The dinner will consist of traditional turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, dressing, vegetables, hot rolls and homemade apple, blackberry and peach cobbler. And the traditional pumpkin pie. The coat giveaway will be back this year. Gently used coats, sweatshirts, sweaters, gloves, scarves and warm clothing will be given away at the dinner. The church is need of volunteers to serve, clean up
and deliver meals. To volunteer call the church office at 242-4185. Sell says, “The church will also be delivering meals to homes of elderly, disabled or homebound people. However, you must call the church at 242-4185 by Wednesday, November 22 at 12:00 noon. Sells stresses that, “The holiday event is not just for people who can’t afford to cook a Thanksgiving dinner. We believe that no one should spend the holidays alone. This is just one way our church tries to minister to the community.”

EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
Believe I believe. What about you? The key word and purpose of John’s gospel is that you might believe. It sounds simple but it’s God’s revealed truth. Everything concerning God’s kingdom can only be obtained through believing. (Hebrews 11:6) Several years ago, a fellow student at North Central University, s i n g e r / s on g w r it e r Dallas Holm, wrote, “Hey! I’m a Believer Now.” “Since Jesus changed my mind. Hey! I’m a believer now, everything’s gonna be fine, Hey! I’m a believer now.” Many people may come into your life disguised as believers. But what do true believers believe? Believe these revelations from John’s gospel and God’s Word. They will change your life. BELIEVE JOHN THE BAPTIST’S TESTIMONY. John was the forerunner of Christ. He prepared the way. “This man came for a witness to the Light that all through him might believe.” (John 1:6-9) All true believers
1. Is the Book of 1 Peter in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. In Matthew 13, what baking item does Jesus compare to the kingdom of heaven? Eggs, Milk, Salt, Yeast 3 . Ac c ord i n g t o
receive John’s testimony that Jesus Christ is the true light, the Son of God. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12) Have you believed in Christ by receiving Him as Savior and Lord? BELIEVE JESUS’ MIRACLES. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was his turning water into wine. “This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.” (John 2:11) Only God could do creative miracles as Jesus did and demonstrate His power over nature. His miracles are signs that you might believe in Him. Do you need a miracle? Believe. BELIEVE THE SCRIPTURES. Jesus made a whip and drove out the money changers
and those who profited from selling animals in the temple. The Jews asked for a sign to prove that Jesus had the authority to do so. They were enraged when Jesus said, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it . . . But He was speaking of the temple of His body. Therefore when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the scriptures and the words that Jesus had spoken.” (John 2:19-22; 11:26; 20:8) Believe the scriptures and the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. BELIEVE IN THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Dallas Holm sang, “Yes, I’m a believer now, since He set me free. Well, people think that I’m kinda strange, something’s out of place, that big old frown that I used to wear, it’s simply been erased. A smile has moved upon my face, it
stays there all the time. Ever since He made me His, and I made Jesus mine!” Do you believe? BELIEVE ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD. “Jesus said to him, ‘If you believe, all things are possible to him who believes.’” (Mark 9:23) A recent Facebook post by Andrew Womack said, “The Lord expects all His children to live a Supernatural Life of Faith.” Believe. BELIEVE IN CHRIST’S KEEPING POWER. The apostle Paul revealed the key to a victorious life. “For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless, I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day.” (II Timothy 1:12) Whatever you may be going through believe God is able to keep you. Believe God. Do you believe? Say it out l ou d — I BELIEVE! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area
by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American journalist, editor and writing teacher Brenda Ueland who made the following sage observation: "Inspiration does not come like a bolt, nor is it kinetic, energetic striving, but it comes into us slowly and quietly and all the time, though we must regularly and every day give it a little chance to start flowing, prime it with a little soli-
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your work requires increased effort during the next few days. But it all will pay off down the line. Things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and/or friends. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your genuine concern for others could prompt you to promise more than you can deliver. It’s best to modify your plans now, before you wind up overcommitted later. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A situation that seems simple at first glance needs a more thorough assessment before you give it your OK. Dig deeper for information that might be hidden from view. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Careful: Right now, things might not be quite what they appear. Even the intuitive Crab could misread the signs. Get some solid facts before you act on your suspicions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels are high, allowing you to complete those unfinished tasks before you take on a new project. A social invitation could come from an unlikely source. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might think you’re helping, but unless you’re asked for a critique, don’t give it. If you are asked, watch what you say. Your words should be helpful, not hurtful. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your attempt at mediating disputes might meet some opposition at
first. But once you’re shown to be fair and impartial, resistance soon gives way to cooperation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Go ahead. Reward yourself for helping settle a disturbing workplace situation. On another note: A personal relationship might be moving to a higher level. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A sudden change of heart by a colleague might create some momentary uncertainty. But stay with your original decision and, if necessary, defend it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rely on a combination of your sharp instincts along with some really intense information gathering to help you make a possibly lifechanging decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Instead of worrying if that new person in your life will stay or leave, spend all that energy on strengthening your relationship so it becomes walk-out resistant. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden financial dry spell could reduce your cash flow almost to a trickle. But by conserving more and spending less, you’ll get through the crunch in good shape. tude and idleness." • If you heard the word "pantophobia," you might (logically) assume that it means a fear of pants. You'd be only partially correct, however; those who suffer from pantophobia are, presumably, afraid of pants — but that's just because they're afraid of everything. • You might be surprised to learn that the first Model T Fords weren't black —

they were green with red stripes. • If you're thinking of starting a business and want to get up and running right away, there's a company ready to help you get started. Novanym, a branding firm based in Farnborough, England, can provide you with a unique name and its matching . com domain — even your choice of three logos for your fledgling venture. For less than $700 you can brand your company as Aquinique, Spiranti or Fenmarch. Have a more generous budget? Try Mupkin, Cubexis or Zeqon, all in the $5,000 range. If you really want to go all-out
— and are in the right industry — try Motaway for $25,727, or even InvestmentEtc, which is going for nearly $40,000. • You might be surprised to learn that if you add up all the deaths that are caused worldwide by tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS, the total would be less than a third of those attributable to pollution, which accounts for 16 percent of all global deaths. *** Thought for the Day: "Truth-tellers are not always palatable.
