lenges in the ACC, the Blue Devils usually do get knocked off the top perch, only to reappear as the odds-on favorite to win the NCAA tournament in March. I don't know about you, but I always play three brackets — one picks my alma mater, another picks who I think will win (thus dooming that team to never win) and the third one picks Duke. That's not just practical sense and experience talking, it's sound investment advice. If I had invested heavily in Duke, North Carolina and Kansas for the past 20 years, it would have far outpaced the growth of my 401(k) (and likely a lot of yours, too). Following behind Duke in the poll this year is Michigan State (great coach), Kansas (great players), Kentucky (great freshman about to be in the NBA next season) and Arizona (great logo). It's the same old song, and if you have any question that any one of those teams can or cannot win it all this year, well, don't think twice, it's all right.

In a city that has several million doors and storefronts, 34 Carmine Street in New York's Greenwich Village stands out. It's a bookstore — but not just any bookstore. This place is called "Unoppressive, Non-imperialist Bargain Books." Once inside, after the radical-looking clerk tacitly denies the opportunity to oppress you, you're met with an impressive bunch of books. In one corner, there are more Bob Dylan biographies or studies of the man than you ever thought possible. That's because Dylan — be it Dylan Thomas or Bob himself — is to the Village as Mickey Mouse is to Disneyland. Everyone thinks they like him, or knows that they should like him, but many aren't so sure. Anyway, it's on one of those shelves where the title of big book grabs your attention: "Oh No!

Not Another Book About Bob Dylan!" Every time the Yankees make the postseason, or every time Duke is the preseason No. 1 ranked team in the coaches poll, I am reminded of that book. The Yankees are supposed to win every year, as Hal Steinbrenner and all Yankee fans remind us ad nauseum. But sometimes I think the coaches are just too afraid not to pick Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils for fear of some cosmic retribution. And while Duke lands atop the preseason poll, the band gets back together for another tour. North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky are never far behind Duke on the main stage. The poll does little else than remind Duke that they forever have a target on their back, and the rest of the Mark Vasto is a veteran league's teams all rally sportswriter who lives in around that familiar song: New Jersey. letters to the editor

Dear Editor, This letter is to introduce you to our organization and especially to our Christmas for Kids program. Our organization is about motorcycle rights but we are also very committed to our programs in which we, as a group, can give back to our community. We are all volunteers. Our Christmas for Kids program is about trying to make sure that on Christmas morning the children in our surrounding communities wake up to find a wish has come true. During the year we have fundraisers such as rummage sales, a softball tournament, raffles and other events to help collect funds for our program. All the money (100%) goes directly towards the purchase of toys, clothing, and special wishes the children might have for Christmas. The money that is collected goes directly back into our community businesses where we make our purchases for the children. We are a not for profit group and cash donations are 100% tax deductible. In December we have our largest fundraiser by having a party for our members, friends and the public. This is not just a party. We have a silent auction and a live auction with items that have been

donated by the different businesses and individuals in our area who want to be a part of getting back to the community and the children. In the past we have taken care of as many as 650 children in our community in one year. We try to help the parents who have had a hardship during the year and just need a little helping hand with making their children's Christmas bright. Our thanks goes to everyone who participates and or donates to our Christmas for Kids program. Donations can be mailed to Freedom Riders, A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois, Inc., 1147 N. College, Centralia Illinois 62801, with a notation that it is for the Christmas for Kids program. Our shopping dates for the children begin on December 10. JASON PLUMMER NAMES SHERIFF JEFF BROWN AS CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN to develop policies that can confront these problems head on. I am a big believer in surrounding yourself with the best people and Sheriff Brown’s leadership and expertise are highly respected in the law enforcement community. I will rely heavily on his knowledge of the issues going forward.” Plummer, an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserves and Vice President of R.P. Lumber, has made fighting crime and the spread of opioid addiction a central message of his senate campaign. Last year alone 1,889 people died from opioid overdoses in Illinois and on October 26th, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a national health emergency.1 “This is obviously a very

complex and difficult issue,” Sheriff Brown stated when asked about the rise in opioid use. “The economy plays an important role, and the relationship between joblessness and addiction is strong. What I want to see from elected officials is a plan to create quality jobs and a willingness to partner with local law enforcement agencies to coordinate a regional approach to reducing opioid dependency, educating young people, and stemming the flow of drugs into our neighborhoods. Jason is a job creator, served his country, and is strongly committed to these goals and that’s why I support his candidacy for state senate.” Jeff Brown has served as Sheriff of Bond County since 1994 and is a veteran of the Illinois army National Guard and Air Force Reserves, where he served as a special agent providing protective services for military leaders and other dignitaries. NOW ACCEPTING PATIENTS!

BY AUSTIN BERG A crisis arises. A quick fix emerges. And the status quo remains intact. This is a typical political life cycle for many important issues in Springfield. Illinoisans see it in the budgeting process each year. They see it in a failure to seriously address the state’s mountain of debt. And they just saw it in the toxic culture of sexual harassment, abuse and manipulation in the halls of power. In fact, one could observe

the entire wicked cycle in a single week. On Oct. 31, victims’ rights advocate Denise Rotheimer testified in a House of Representatives committee hearing that she had been sexually harassed by Chicago Democratic state Sen. Ira Silverstein, who enjoyed a position of power as the lead sponsor of a bill for which Rotheimer was advocating. Rotheimer’s testimony came amid a firestorm ignited

by an open letter calling out the abhorrent norms of Springfield. This controversy was stoked by the fact that lawmakers allowed 27 ethics complaints against members of the General Assembly or their staff members to sit in a binder, untouched for as long as three years, as the Office of the Legislative Inspector Melissa Siebert, NP, Dr. Solomon Apostol, and Dr. Miriam Baumgart

General sat empty. Not to worry. There was a convenient solution at hand. First, lawmakers scrambled to fill the legislative inspector general slot. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Madigan’s bill would mandate sexual harassment training and add language on sexual harassment to the ethics code. The bill quickly came up for a vote. One by one, on Nov. 7, lawmakers rose to rail against a culture that has persisted in

state politics for decades. They characterized sexual harassment as rampant in the General Assembly. And then they voted 117-0 in favor of Madigan’s bill in the House, and 55-0 for the bill in the Senate. That should invite skepticism. The foxes are still guarding the henhouse. And they voted unanimously to continue to play a large role in policing themselves. Faisal Khan currently heads up the Chicago watchdog group Project Six. He’s also the former legislative inspector general for the city of Chicago. In fact, he was the first watchdog in the history of the notoriously corrupt Chicago City

Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Council. But his office – while dogged in its pursuits – was widely considered as having been set up to fail. How did Chicago aldermen come up with such an idea? For the most part, they just copied the General Assembly’s language for its legislative inspector general, according to Khan. “Chicago's plan mirrored the state plan,” Khan said. “Which meant a part-time position created on the false premise of few complaints, little to no resources, and an almost impossible set of obstacles and rules to navigate that clearly favored the accused.” Even before it was vacant, Illinois’ Office of the Legislative Inspector General was toothless. The previous legislative inspector general made public just four investigations over a decade, all of which were regarding relatively small matters. Meanwhile, bad actors continued to be dealt with behind closed doors. At worst, that meant offenders would be quietly shuffled out of their seats to some other arm of government, where their behavior would predictably continue unabated. Powerful lawmakers are still likely to be beyond reach in the reformed system. And that’s setting aside how longtime legislative leaders such as S enate President John

Cullerton have emerged unscathed in this process, despite having let serious complaints die in the dark for years. For her part, Rotheimer is now being second-guessed. After she testified, Rotheimer released more than 400 pages of Facebook messages between Silverstein and herself, the contents of which have led certain members of the political commentariat to characterize her responses to Silverstein as “flirting back.” Rotheimer’s daughter responded: “She completely made herself vulnerable, naked in front of a public armed with their comments in place of stones … on a matter they do not fully understand nor could because it would require an investigation,” she wrote. “[S]he thought that if she did not keep up with his comments that the bill would die.” The takeaway: Harsh skepticism can be a discouraging response for other women with stories to tell. That chilling effect is real. And combined with a legislative fix that doesn’t actually fix much, it’s enough to save the status quo. At least for now. For generations our men and women in uniform have continued to serve our great nation with honor and courage, often at great personal cost. Their service has guaranteed us our freedoms. Because of the commitment and professionalism of America's soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, and Coast Guardsmen, we are a free nation and our fighting forces remain unparalleled anywhere in the world. Throughout our history we have witnessed remarkable examples of their selfless acts. They’ve brought freedom and hope to millions of people around the globe. The true number of people they have liberated cannot be calculated and the number of memorials doesn’t begin to represent the true scope of service our veterans have provided. The debt owed to our nation’s veterans is one we cannot ever fully repay, and it is imperative that on this Veterans Day we take this day to keep alive the sacrifices and deeds of our nation’s veterans. I encourage each of us to pause and think about the

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Believe I believe. What about you? The key word and purpose of John’s gospel is that you might believe. It sounds simple but it’s God’s revealed truth. Everything concerning God’s kingdom can only be obtained through believing. (Hebrews 11:6) Several years ago, a fellow student at North Central University, singer/songwriter Dallas Holm, wrote, “Hey! I’m a Believer Now.” “Since Jesus changed my mind. Hey! I’m a believer now, everything’s gonna be

fine, Hey! I’m a believer now.” Many people may come into your life disguised as believers. But what do true believers believe? Believe these revelations from John’s gospel and God’s Word. They will change your life. BELIEVE JOHN THE BAPTIST’S TESTIMONY. John was the forerunner of Christ. He prepared the way. “This man came for a witness to the Light that all through him might believe.” (John 1:6-9) All true believers receive

John’s testimony that Jesus Christ is the true light, the Son of God. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12) Have you believed in Christ by receiving Him as Savior and Lord? BELIEVE JESUS’ MIRACLES. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was his turning water into wine. “This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.” (John 2:11) Only God could do creative miracles as Jesus did and demonstrate His power over nature. His miracles are signs that you might believe in Him. Do you need a miracle? Believe.

BELIEVE THE SCRIPTURES. Jesus made a whip and drove out the money changers and those who profited from selling animals in the temple. The Jews asked for a sign to prove that Jesus had the authority to do so. They were enraged when Jesus said, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it . . . But He was speaking of the temple of His body. Therefore when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the scriptures and the words that Jesus had spoken.” (John 2:19-22; 11:26; 20:8) Believe the scriptures and the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. BELIEVE IN THE ONLY BEGOTTEN

SON OF GOD. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Dallas Holm sang, “Yes, I’m a believer now, since He set me free. Well, people think that I’m kinda strange, something’s out of place, that big old frown that I used to wear, it’s simply been erased. A smile has moved upon my face, it stays there all the time. Ever since He made me His, and I made Jesus mine!” Do you believe? BELIEVE ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD. “Jesus said to him, ‘If you believe, all things are possible to him who believes.’” (Mark 9:23) A recent Facebook post by Andrew Womack said,

“The Lord expects all His children to live a Supernatural Life of Faith.” Believe. BELIEVE IN CHRIST’S KEEPING POWER. The apostle Paul revealed the key to a victorious life. “For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless, I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day.” (II Timothy 1:12) Whatever you may be going through believe God is able to keep you. Believe God. Do you believe? Say it out loud — I BELIEVE! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

the significance of the beginning of National Bible Week is almost, for many Americans, a matter of historical amnesia. Like so many, many other moments in American history, Christians were presented with a reason to be proud of their heritage. Consider the following Founding Fathers and their thoughts on the Bible. John Adams . . . signer of the Declaration of Independence; Judge; Diplomat; One of Two Signers of the Bill of Rights; Second President of the United States. "I have examined all religions, and the result is that the Bible is the best book in the world." — John Adams John Jay . . . president of Congress; Diplomat; Author of the Federalist Papers; "By conveying the Bible to people . . . we certainly do them a most interesting act of kindness. We thereby enable them to learn that man was originally created and placed in a state of happiness, but, becoming disobedient, was subjected to the degradation and evils which he and his posterity have since experienced. The Bible will also inform them that our gracious Creator has provided for us a Redeemer in whom all the nations of the earth should be blessed – that this Redeemer has made atonement “for the sins of the whole world,” — John Jay

What's a Jeep? What's a "jeep"? To a car collector or soldier, it is a special kind of vehicle that can travel over all sorts of rough terrain. But to a comic collector, it's a bright-yellow animal that looks a little like a dog walking on its two hind legs. It has a large red nose, tiny ears and is magical. Eugene the Jeep first appeared in 1936 in the comic strip "Thimble Theater," along with Popeye and Olive Oyl. Eugene the Jeep wanted to help humans and always told the truth, although the only word he said was "jeep." There were other characteristics, too. Eugene ate orchids only, could predict the future, could teleport himself and walk through walls. Jeep was so popular that he was included as Popeye's pet on and off in animated cartoons, comic strips and animated television shows from the 1930s and 1940s to 1987. Jeep memorabilia was plentiful, but a lot was not saved. There are old stuffed or wooden dolls, figurines, plaster carnival statues, toys, games and textiles. In 2012, a new Popeye comic included Eugene, and new Jeep collectibles were made. An old 13-inch-tall composition and wooden doll made by Cameo Doll Co. was recently sold. He has a label on his chest that reads "Jeep, (c) King Features Syn, 1935." A fan spent $1,044 to take Jeep

home. An 8-inch version of the doll in the same auction sold for only $297. *** Q: When I was growing up, my grandmother had a strange lamp in the breakfast room. It looked like an 8-inch high cylinder that had a light bulb inside. The heat of the light made hot air that turned the paper or plastic cylinder. There was a picture of Niagara Falls on the side, and as the shade turned, it made it look like the water was flowing over the falls. I want to get a similar lamp for my son, but I don't know where or what to call it. A: Your grandmother had a "motion lamp," probably made by the Scene-in-Action Company of Chicago. It made the lamps from 1925 to 1936. They were the first, but several other companies made similar "moving" lamps. They were interesting, but gave very little light. Ten years ago, the lamps sold for about $200 to $250, but today they're worth only about half that much. *** CURRENT PRICES Coca-Cola bottle, Super Bowl commemorative, Coke Is It! ONE FACT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DISABILITY BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MT. VERNON, IL

Disability is something many people aren’t faced with in a direct way. The reality is, a 20-year-old worker currently has a onein-four chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age. That makes Social Security disability benefits something you should learn about and understand. One fact you should know is Social Security’s definition of disability: the inability to work because of a severe condition that is expected to last for a year or end in death. Social Security disability benefits replace part of your income when you become disabled and are unable to work. Other disability programs may have partial disability or short-term disability, but federal law requires a stricter definition of disability for Social Security benefits. The definition of disability used to

qualify you for Social Security Disability Insurance is generally the same one that is used for Supplemental Security Income benefits. Most people focus on the medical severity of their condition when filing for disability benefits. They provide medical records that show how severe the condition is. Since Social Security defines severity in terms of being unable to work, we also need complete work information. You can read a description about the process of evaluating whether you can work or not and the severity of your condition in our publication, Disability Benefits at www.socialsecurity. gov/pubs/EN-05-10029. pdf, under the section, “How we make the decision.” Understanding how we make the disability decision helps you see the importance of information

you provide about your condition and the types of work you have done. For more information about how we evaluate your work, you should review this section on our website: www.socialsecurity.gov/ disability/step4and5.htm. Remember, when you provide the details about your condition and your work, you’re creating a picture of your individual situation. These details show the extent of your disabling condition. These are examples of some of the types of specific information we need about your prior work: • Main responsibilities of your job(s); • Main tasks you performed; • Dates you worked (month and year); • Number of hours a day you worked per week; • Rate of pay you received;

Rambunctious Puppy Is Out of Control DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a whippy little mutt who has a ton of energy. "Curtis" will zoom around the house at light speed, sometimes running into furniture and knocking things over. He will not listen to me at all. How can I get him to obey and to calm d ow n ? — Exhausted "Puppy Mom" in Denver DEAR PUPPY MOM: It sounds like Curtis needs more exercise time, preferably outdoors with plenty of space to zoom around. If you have a backyard with a fence,

that's a great place to let him run — supervised, of course. If you don't have a yard, scout out a fenced-in area where you can take him regularly — but not a dog park, not yet. Curtis first needs to learn to come when you call. He needs to learn how to sit and stay. These three basic commands are the foundation of a dog's training. Once you've let him run in an open space for several minutes and he's spent that initial burst of energy, call Curtis to you. Use a firm, confident voice. Don't plead. Don't get angry. Don't change your tone of voice. He may not respond right away; just call again. When he does come, give him praise (and a little treat). Do this every day until he responds each time you call. In fact, he may eventually spend less time romping around and come to hang out with you, the nice lady

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American journalist, editor and writing teacher Brenda Ueland who made the following sage observation: "Inspiration does not come like a bolt, nor is it kinetic, energetic striving, but it comes into us slowly and quietly and all the time, though we must regularly and every day give it a little chance to start flowing, prime it with a little soli-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your work requires increased effort during the next few days. But it all will pay off down the line. Things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and/or friends. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your genuine concern for others could prompt you to promise more than you can deliver. It’s best to modify your plans now, before you wind up overcommitted later. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A situation that seems simple at first glance needs a more thorough assessment before you give it your OK. Dig deeper for information that might be hidden from view. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Careful: Right now, things might not be quite what they appear. Even the intuitive Crab could misread the signs. Get some solid facts before you act on your suspicions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels are high, allowing you to complete those unfinished tasks before you take on a new project. A social invitation could come from an unlikely source. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might think you’re helping, but unless you’re asked for a critique, don’t give it. If you are asked, watch what you say. Your words should be helpful, not hurtful. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your attempt at mediating disputes might meet some opposition at

first. But once you’re shown to be fair and impartial, resistance soon gives way to cooperation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Go ahead. Reward yourself for helping settle a disturbing workplace situation. On another note: A personal relationship might be moving to a higher level. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A sudden change of heart by a colleague might create some momentary uncertainty. But stay with your original decision and, if necessary, defend it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rely on a combination of your sharp instincts along with some really intense information gathering to help you make a possibly lifechanging decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Instead of worrying if that new person in your life will stay or leave, spend all that energy on strengthening your relationship so it becomes walk-out resistant. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden financial dry spell could reduce your cash flow almost to a trickle. But by conserving more and spending less, you’ll get through the crunch in good shape. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to keep secrets makes you the perfect confidante for friends, family and coworkers. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

tude and idleness." • If you heard the word "pantophobia," you might (logically) assume that it means a fear of pants. You'd be only partially correct, however; those who suffer from pantophobia are, presumably, afraid of pants — but that's just because they're afraid of everything. • You might be surprised to learn that the first Model T Fords weren't black —

Wednesday, November 15, 2017 they were green with red stripes. • If you're thinking of starting a business and want to get up and running right away, there's a company ready to help you get started. Novanym, a branding firm based in Farnborough, England, can provide you with a unique name and its matching . com domain — even your choice of three logos for your fledgling venture. For less than $700 you can brand your company as Aquinique, Spiranti or Fenmarch. Have a more generous budget? Try Mupkin, Cubexis or Zeqon, all in the $5,000 range. If you really want to go all-out

— and are in the right industry — try Motaway for $25,727, or even InvestmentEtc, which is going for nearly $40,000. • You might be surprised to learn that if you add up all the deaths that are caused worldwide by tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS, the total would be less than a third of those attributable to pollution, which accounts for 16 percent of all global deaths. *** Thought for the Day: "Truth-tellers are not always palatable. There is a preference for candy bars." — Gwendolyn Brooks © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
