KC TO PRESENT HOLIDAY CHOIR CONCERT WITH HIGH SCHOOL HONOR CHOIR The Kaskaskia College Choral Program is proud to announce its Holiday Choir Concert in conjunction with the 2017 High School Honor Choir on Thursday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kaskaskia College Jane Knight Auditorium. Featured ensembles will be the Kaskaskia College Concert Choir, KC Blues, and the KC Community Chorale, all under the direction of Professor Lynda Marshall. This is the Second Annual Kaskaskia College Honor Choir Festival with 9 participating high schools and 160 singers selected for the choir. The high school students will b e re h e ars i ng w it h Professor Marshall during the day and joining the college choirs to present the Holiday Concert in the evening. Area high schools

KC Community Chorale will open the concert with John Rutter’s “Gloria”, featuring guest instrumentalists playing brass, organ, and percussion. “Hevenu Shalom Aleichem.” The concert will conclude with the High School Honor Choir presenting a variety of classic and multicultural holiday selections including a medieval Spanish song, an American spiritual, and “Hallelujah” from Handel’s Messiah. KC Professor, Lynda Marshall, says, “I am so excited to host the second High School Honor Choir festival. There are so many talented students in the KC District and I look forward to making memorable musical experiences with the local singers. This is a wonderful opportunity for students from smaller music programs to come together and perform large ensemble repertoire. What a great way to begin the holiday season!” The concert is free and open to the public.

SPERO FAMILY SERVICES JOINS #GIVINGTUESDAY MOVEMENT Spero Family Services has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. We are also excited to announce that the Mayors of the City of Mt. Vernon and the City of West Frankfort are announcing an official proclamation of this day. Occurring this year on November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) and the widely recognized shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to kick off the holiday giving season. It also inspires people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support. Spero joined #GivingTuesday as a way to promote non-profits and the work they do. Spero l au nche d t he i r ow n #GivingTuesday campaign in 2016, and our goal this year is to at least double the gifts from our generous supporters as they invest in our mission and vision to provide hope, help and healing to those in our care. “We are excited about this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign, and already the community has rallied around our efforts to make this day special. We offer an online giving platform for donations through our website which makes it easy

to give. It takes about 5 minutes to make a donation, however the impact of that gift will last a lifetime. We hope the community will join us on the 28th to make a difference in the lives of others that need help and healing,” states Sandy Sinnett, Director of Development & PR. The community can go to sperofs.org/giving-Tuesday to donate. #isupportspero #unselfie

OPINIONS

There Is No 'Without Trump' Ed Gillespie went from potential vindicator of Trumpism to "cuckservative" in the space of a couple of hours. The Virginia Republican, campaigning for governor in a treacherous political environment defined by an unpopular president of his own party, ran the only race he reasonably could. He distanced himself from Donald

Trump personally, hoping to lessen his losses in heavily D emo crat ic Nor t her n Virginia, while hitting some Trumpian notes on crime and immigration to appeal to the president's base. Gillespie looked to be gaining fast on Democrat Ralph Northam. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, the self-declared keeper of the Trumpist flame, believed Gillespie had cracked the code by fashioning a "Trumpism without Trump." At least that was the party line until Gillespie lost on Nov. 7. Then he became an establishment tool who had betrayed Trumpism and the president. The hypocrisy of the Bannon faction aside, the

Virginia race revealed a problem with the Trumpismwithout-Trump construct — namely, that it's not really possible. First, it's not going to be convincing to Trump-haters. Ed Gillespie is not the slightest bit Trumpy. He is earnest, wonky and friendly. When he distanced himself from Trump, it was credible because he hadn't been close to Trump to begin with. He had never met him, and all of Trump's support on Twitter was unsolicited. None of this made the slightest difference to voters in Northern Virginia, where Northam racked up margins bigger than Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. These people weren't showing up

to send a message to Gillespie, the otherwise unthreatening candidate who happened to run a barrage of negative ads against Northam (not the first time this has happened in electoral politics). They were showing up to send a message to Trump, whom they believe is a clear and present danger to all that they hold dear. So as a sheer political matter, there can be no such thing as Trumpism without Trump, or Anti-Trumpism without Trump, or Anything Else without Trump. It is difficult enough for a candidate to run away from a conventional president of his own party; it is going be even harder with a president who dominates the media to an extent no other president has, and courts — nay, enjoys — radioactive controversies. In theory, Trumpism without Trump is the right direction for the GOP. It should learn from his populist, nationalistic appeal while avoiding its (and his) ex-

Wednesday, November 22, 2017 cesses. In practice, Trump himself is going to loom all the larger in the party. He is the main issue in American politics, and he may be the only Republican fit to weather the storm — he has a proven ability to turn out his voters, he doesn't have to win elections in nonpresidential years, and his persona works for him, if not for anyone else. If the worst comes and Republicans lose both houses of Congress next year, Trump's importance will be further magnified as the only Republican standing between Democrats and unified control of the federal government. In that circumstance, Republican voters would probably be much more willing to embrace Trump without Trumpism, rather than the opposite. letters to the editor

Dear Editor, Former CIA says Putin "played" Trump when he said he had nothing to do with the election. Donald Trump is dealing with important issues. Why no mention about the silly "restart button" that Hillary Clinton took over? Why didn't Barack Obama do something when he was in charge if he knew Russia was going to do this? We need to move forward. A good relationship with Russia is important in helping with all the world problems but still realize that Russia has its own interests. Robert Mueller's committee needs to be stopped. They Continued on page 5

BUY HERE, PAY HERE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Restless Rams and Ewes might want to let others finish a current project while they start something new. But if you do, you could risk losing out on a future opportunity. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s creative forces start revving up as you plan for the upcoming holidays. Some practical aspects also emerge, especially where money is involved. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Moments of doubt disrupt your otherwise clear sense of purpose. Don’t ignore them. They could be telling you not to rush into anything until you know more about it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A planned trip might have to be delayed. Plan to use this new free time to update your skills and your resume so you’ll be ready when a new job opportunity opens. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A flood of holiday party bids from business contacts allows you to mix work and pleasure. Your knowledge plus your Leonine charm wins you a new slew of admirers. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected act by a colleague complicates an agreement, causing delays in implementing it. Check out the motive for this move: It’s not what you might suspect. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might want to cut ties with an ingrate who seems to have forgotten

your past generosity. But there might be a reason for this behavior that you should know about. Ask. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful not to set things in stone. Much could happen over the next several days that will make you rethink some decisions and maybe change them. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your plans to help provide holiday cheer for the less fortunate inspire others to follow your generous example. Expect welcome news by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re in your glory as you start planning for the holiday season ahead. But leave time to deal with a problem that needs a quick and fair resolution. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The upcoming holiday season provides a perfect setting for strengthening relationships with kin and others. A new contact has important information. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Instead of fretting over a cutting remark by a co-worker, chalk it up to an outburst of envy of your well-respected status among both your colleagues and superiors. SPEAKOUT Continued from page 4

will continue to keep digging for dirt on anyone who had anything to do with the President from the day he was born. Why all Democrats? Republicans need to get committees going to check on Benghazi, emails, Clinton Foundation, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Lois Lerner, James Comey, VA scandal, Mexican guns, illegals, etc. Donald Trump must be a tough guy to continue his plan to make America great with all the garbage being thrown at him. Republicans better get in line. All their non-support of the President will just get more Democrats elected and we will be back in the era of Barack Obama. All I think is that they're not behind him, like the swamp. The older Bush is now accused of patting women on the backside. Give me a break! What next! Is it okay when men pat each other on the bottom? Let's start investigating some of the bigwigs in the Democratic Party and see how clean they are. Investigate everyone involved in the uranium deal. Why are these sexual accusations just now coming out against the Judge Roy Moore running for office?

We know the Washington Post is false news. John McCain says Moore should not be seated even if elected. I'm very disappointed in John McCain for not supporting the President or his program; also Mitch McConnell. Makes it sound like he's already guilty. Democrats are enjoying all of this. Why can't the Republicans see this? How many there now meet the moral qualifications to be seated? Democrat or Republican? Now they continue to go after Trump's children. The Ex Vice President is on the talk shows saying he didn't want to attack the President while out of the country. He and Barack Obama need to stay home. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Thanksgiving Can you imagine a nation proclaiming a national holiday to offer thanksgiving to God for his abundant blessings? The pilgrims who survived that first harsh winter started the American tradition. Years later, President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as a national holiday. God commanded the Jews to set aside special feast days to commemorate God’s blessings. For some, Thanksgiving has become simply a day of feasting, football, and fortune hunting the day after Thanksgiving. But don’t miss the benefits of true thanksgiving. PROSPERITY AND THANKSGIVING. True prosperity starts with the soul. “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” (III John 1:2) Gratitude leads to a healthy soul and wholeness. David declared, “What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon

the name of the Lord.” (Psalm 116:12) In many of the Psalms we are urged to offer thanksgiving. (Psalm 50:14) Captain Eddy Rickenbacker and his crew were shot down by enemy fire during WWII. The survivors drifted in a life raft for days with little water and no food. The crew had a prayer meeting and prayed for God’s help. Shortly after, a lone seagull landed on one of the men’s head. He reached up and grabbed it and they ripped it apart and ate it raw. They used some of the inner parts for bait to catch some fish. By God’s divine providence the crew was rescued. Every Friday for the rest of his life, Eddie Rickenbacker took a bucket of fish down to the pier, fed the seagulls, and offered thanks to God for his crew’s rescue. True prosperity starts with gratitude. PRAISE AND THANKSaGIVING. David reveals the secret of entering the presence of God. “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise. Be thankful to him and bless his

name.” (Psalm 100:4) Thanksgiving enables us to catch the wind of the Spirit and mount up with wings like eagles. Why should we offer thanksgiving to God? “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures to all generations.” (Psalm 100:5) His grace and truth will flood you with thanksgiving. P R AY E R AND THANKSGIVING. Thanksgiving supercharges prayer with faith and surrounds you with peace. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer . . . with thanksgiving . . . and the peace of God . . . will guard your minds.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Don’t let thanksgiving be the missing ingredient in your prayer. POWER IN THANKSGIVING. Thanksgiving can change our attitude and bring God’s grace and power into the situation you face. “Rejoice always. Pray . . . In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (I Thessalonians 5:18) A couple of weeks ago, I had one of those days where everything seemed to go wrong. But when I paused to praise God and give him thanks, his presence and power flooded my soul, and God gave me grace to walk in victory. PERSON OF THANKSGIVING. Jesus constantly

offered thanksgiving to his Heavenly Father. At his Last Supper, Jesus took the cup and gave thanks. “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave to them saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:14-19) To experience the ultimate thanksgiving, by faith partake of the sacrifice of Jesus on the

cross. Confess him as Savior and Lord. Thank Jesus for victory for every area of your life. (I Corinthians 15:57) One day ten lepers came to Jesus begging him to heal them. He sent them to the priest for the prescribed certificate of health. As they went, all 10 were cleansed from leprosy. But only one came back to glorify God and

give thanks, and as Jesus pointed out, he was a Samaritan. (Luke 17:11-17) “And he said to him, ‘Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.’” Thanksgiving gives glory to God and releases faith. Are you thankful? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

2 cups milk 1/3 cup raisins 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted 5 cups stale French bread cubes (1") (recipe follows) 1 egg, beaten 1 T. lemon juice 1 tsp. grated lemon rind

In large bowl, beat eggs with electric mixer on high speed until thick and lemon-colored. Add sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and butter; beat at high speed until blended. Stir in milk, raisins, and pecans. Place bread cubes in lightly greased 8" square baking pan. Pour egg mixture over bread, stirring until all bread is soaked. Let stand at room temperature about 30 minutes, lightly mashing bread down in egg mixture occasionally. Preheat oven to 300°F. Bake 40 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 425° and bake 10 minutes more, or until pudding is browned and puffy. To make lemon rum sauce, place butter in top of double boiler; bring water underneath to boil. Reduce heat to low; cook until butter melts. Add sugar and rum, stirring until sugar dissolves. Gradually stir about one fourth of hot mixture into beaten egg; add egg mixture to remaining hot mixture in pan, stirring constantly. Cook, stirring constantly, 5 minutes, or until sauce thickens. Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice and lemon rind. Yield: 1 cup of sauce. To serve, cut pudding into squares. Place each square in a dish and top with Lemon Rum Sauce. Yield: 4 to 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. T

hanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastef ulness, as t he U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American hou s ehol d s pro du c e roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the

holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions. • Use fine china when serving meals. Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to serve meals on fine china and use the silverware that has gone unused instead of disposable plates and utensils. In addition to adding a touch of elegance to meals, reusable china and silverware is less wasteful than paper plates and plastic utensils. Cloth napkins and other table linens are also more eco-friendly than paper napkins. • Decorate using natural items. Scour the great outdoors for all-natural centerpiece materials or other items that can be turned into wreaths and garlands. Vases filled with pine cones and acorns make for beautiful, inexpensive and festive decorations. • Shop locally and organically. When shopping for Thanksgiving dinner,

Happy Thanksgiving

choose local produce, poultry and grains whenever possible. Resist the urge to buy more than you need as well. Skip some of the less-popular dishes that are used only to make the table seem full. Buy a small turkey or think about only serving turkey breasts, which tend to be the most popular cuts of the bird. Use reusable shopping bags to carry items home and reduce waste even further. • Light candles and reduce energy consumption. During the meal, eat by candlelight and turn off lights in other areas of the home that are not in use. Rather than turning on the television, take the party outdoors and play a game of football on the front lawn. • Have a local Thanksgiving. Start a new tradition and invite nearby friends and family over for the holiday instead of traveling long distances. According to Use Less Stuff, a resource for eco-con-

scious men and women, if each family reduced gasoline consumption by one gallon (roughly 20 miles), they could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons. • Send home the leftovers. Send each guest home with some leftovers if you have any. This way the refrigerator isn’t left full of items that will end up uneaten. Otherwise, donate uncooked food to a local food bank. Use any scraps of vegetables in a compost pile. • Don’t let recycling fall by the wayside. Remember to recycle all applicable items. Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean recycling habits should be forgotten. Encourage guests to pitch in by clearly marking recycling bins. Thanksgiving can be less wasteful without detracting from the enjoyment and true meaning of the holiday.
