World Cup Time Is Now for America Thirty-one nations have booked a ticket for the 2018 World Cup, to be held in Russia next year. Most conspicuously absent in this year's tournament besides Italy (which missed the cut for the first time since 1958 and has the nation in mourning)? The United States of America. Don't blame any sort of collusion either — the United States has been paying plenty of lip service to world football (or soccer or whatever you want to call it) over the past few decades, but our continued inability to mount any sort of push for the championship on the men's side remains a constant annoyance for the American sports fan. (Our women, however, continue to rock.) As of this writing, 30 countries have secured their place to join host nation Russia in next year's tournament: Australia, Argentina,

back down and think back to our own culture when it comes to dominance and change. What would John Wooden do, for instance? Or Knute Rockne? Or Vince Lombardi? Or George S. Patton? For years we've been focusing on building a program — a well of players. Well, that time has come. We have a great soccer structure in place. All we need now is a champion. Once again, America will be on the outside looking in during the 2018 World Cup, and it's more than past time for this country to start to compete in great ways. It's time to start thinking about winning the World Cup, and the time to begin has to be now. For those of you expecting to see a little history, know that defe n d i n g c h ampi on Germany is the bookmakers' favorite to win the World Cup, followed by Brazil, Spain, Argentina, France, B elg ium and t hen England. If Germany wins, they'd become the first country to win backto-back World Cups since Pele's Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Egypt, England, F r a n c e , G e r m a ny, Honduras, Iceland, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia and Uruguay (New Zealand vs. Peru played after we went to press). For those of you who missed it, America soiled the sheets in the Caribbean when it came time to qualify, a bloodbath that saw Coach Bruce Arena, the man who was supposed to bring European sensibility to our roguish American ways, quit the scene entirely. Now, America once again sits on the precipice, questioning its desire to rebuild. Does it blow everything up? Or is there enough there to build upon, enough to Mark Vasto is a veteran believe in. sportswriter who lives in Call it American ex- New Jersey. ceptionalism, but it's time for Team America © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc. to really put their heads

KC FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS DONATE TO OVERSEAS MILITARY SOLDIERS The Kaskaskia College’s TRiO, Veterans, BASIC, and Criminal Justice Clubs joined together for a great cause as they collected specific items for “Stockings for Soldiers” and “Cell Phones for Soldiers.” Throughout the semester, students and employees collected hygiene products, and other needed personal items along with certain foods to place in Christmas stockings. On Monday, November 20, several students from the clubs came together to place the collected items into the Christmas stockings and 257 stuffed stockings were put together for our overseas military personnel. The groups also collected 127 deactivated cellular devices for another project entitled, “Cell Phones for Soldiers.” The cell phones will be sent to the “Helping

Heroes Home” organization where they will be sold to a recycling company. The money collected from the phones will purchase calling cards and sent to overseas military personnel so they can call home to their loved ones. The stockings and cellular phones were delivered to the local drop-off hub, Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home of Centralia, who will now send the stockings and cellular phones to the parent distribution centers. Each year Sutherland Funeral Home accepts product and monetary donations for the annual events. Outside the received monetary donations from the community, they take-on the expense of shipping the stockings and cellular phones. If interested in helping for this great cause, espe-

JASON PLUMMER FILES CANDIDATE PETITION IN 54TH SENATE RACE

OPINIONS

SENATE CANDIDATE GEORGE BARBER FILES FOR MARCH 20, 2018 PRIMARY With more than 2,000 nominating signatures in hand, 54th District State Senate Candidate George Barber filed petitions Monday for the March 20, 2018 Primary Election at t he St ate B oard of Elections in Springfield. “I am grateful to the citizens of the 54th Senate District who signed petitions and helped me to reach this first campaign goal,” Barber said. While this is an important first step, our work has just begun.” Barber announced his candidacy last month and

said he would model his representation of the people on principled conservatives such as Ronald Reagan (on whose campaign he worked while in college), former State Sen. Frank Watson and current State Sen. Kyle McCarter. “My top priority is the recovery and restoration of the Illinois economy,” Barber said. “Illinois has too much to offer in the way of a dynamic education system, and a welltrained workforce, to settle for the status quo. We need to reduce regulation, taxation and litiga-

tion to put our families and friends back to work. We need a sustainable economic environment to create opportunity and prosperity for workers today and our children tomorrow.” Monday, November 27 was the first day for candidate filing. The filing period continues through December 4, 2017. The 54th Senate District covers all of Bond, Clinton, Fayette and Marion Counties and parts of Effingham, Madison, St. Clair and Washington Counties.

Jason Plummer, who is running to fill an open senate seat in Illinois’ 54th District, was among the candidates who submitted their petition at the State Board of Elections in Springfield early Monday morning. Plummer, along with dozens of circulators, collected over 2500 signatures from across the district to secure his place on the ballot. “I sincerely want to thank every person who signed or circulated my petition. Voters will have an important choice to make on March 20th and I will be working very hard over the coming months to earn the confidence of every voter,” Plummer stated.

Plummer announced his candidacy in October and has stressed the importance of creating quality jobs, confronting the opioid crisis, and being an effective, conservative voice for Southern Illinois. “I don’t take being a candidate for office lightly. There are serious issues that this district and the state cannot afford to ignore. We have to create quality jobs. We have to support law enforcement and get drugs out of our communities. We have to elect candidates who will uphold the values of the people of S outhern Illinois. I deeply look forward to speaking with every voter in this district

and working to earn their support. My commitment is to be a strong leader for them in Springfield.” Jason Plummer is Vice President at R.P. Lumber as well as an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserves. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Maryville, serves on the board of Carmi Baptist Children’s Home, and is very active in several other civic, business, and charitable organizations. In 2010, Plummer was the Republican nominee for Lt. Governor, fighting for conservative principles on the ticket with Bill Brady. He and his wife Shannon live in Edwardsville.

The two-way wrist radio first mentioned in 1946, two-way wrist TV (1964) and Spacecar (1960s) all have become realities. *** Q: My family heirloom is a divided child's feeding plate decorated with scenes of a girl playing with or feeding her toys. The back is marked "Thompson." What is its value? A: Your plate was made

Wednesday, December 6, 2017 by CC Thompson Pottery Co. of East Liverpool, Ohio, founded in 1868 and closed in 1938. They made porcelain plates after 1917. The decoration on your plate is a decal called "Dinnertime," which was used by several companies. The dish was made sometime between 1917 and 1938. It would sell in a shop today for about $20, but should be worth more to your family. *** Q: I bought a modern copy of a tall flower container with 24 tubes to hold flowers that go to a center section. I bought it to use as a flower vase and now I'm told it was used to grow indoor plants in places like Williamsburg. Can you settle a bet about this for us? A: The name "tulipiere" is used for tall, manyspouted vases like yours, and for a shorter vase with five spouts that looks like fingers on a hand or just a round vase with spouts facing in all directions. The original tulipieres were made of 17th-century Delft. Queen Mary II of England liked flowers in the palace and ordered the vases to be refilled three

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Reading the Bible for all it’s Worth Solitary confinement is not a fun place to be. It’s not all that solitary and can be a noisome place of sheer pandemonium wrought with curses and taunts of fellow inmates. While having a conversation with an inmate in solitary, I asked him if he would like to have a Bible. He replied no, he had already read it. I found his reply very puzzling. Many people, Christians included, claim to have read the Bible. But their lives seem to be unaffected by it. I replied to the inmate, “It’s one thing to read the Bible — it’s another thing to let the Bible, God’s holy word, read you.” “For the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:11-13) If you will listen to the living Word of God, it will read

your mail, it will discern your inner most thoughts, renew your mind, and give direction to your life. Recently I saw a book entitled “Reading the Bible for all it’s Worth.” I haven’t read the book, but let’s consider some ways to read the Bible for all it’s worth and have a daily, life changing encounter with God. Precede each of the following with READ THE BIBLE. AS THE HOLY WORD OF GOD. The Bible is not a novel or a historical narrative of mere men. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof. For correction, for instruction in righteousness . . .” (II Timothy 3:16) Realize you are reading the holy, living Word of God. EXPECTING GOD TO PERSONALLY SPEAK TO YOU. God is an up close and personal God and he has a personal word for you. In the pages of the Holy Bible the Holy Spirit will reveal Jesus, the Son of God. Both the Old and New Testaments point to Jesus and his love for you. David had a passionate hunger and thirst for God’s Word. In Psalm 119

he describes his longing and need for God’s Word. Jesus describes God’s desire for a personal relationship with his children with the picture of the Good Shepherd and his sheep in John 10. “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27) As you read the Bible, expect God to speak to you personally. IN PRAYERFUL MEDITATION. Biblical meditation is to ponder and think on God’s Word. (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 104:34; 119:97, 99, 148) Ask yourself questions such as, “What is God saying to me?” “How do I apply it and put it into practice?” “What do I see about Jesus?” Ask the Holy Spirit for illumination. AS A STUDENT OF GOD’S WORD. Have an overall view of biblical doctrine and sound teaching. “Study to show yourselves approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Timothy 2:15) Doing topical studies with a concordance can help you read scripture on a certain topic or word. IN SUBMISSION AND OBEDIENCE. It’s not how much of the Bible you read, but how much of God’s Word do you obey and put into practice. Jesus compared this key as making a difference between being a wise man/ woman or a foolish man/ woman. (Matthew 7:21-

17; Isaiah 1:19) A N D PR AY T H E SCRIPTURES BACK TO GOD. Personalize the passages and, in prayer, claim the promises or ask the Holy Spirit to actualize them in your life. A N D SI NG A N D SHARE THE SCRIPTURES WITH OTHERS. “Speaking to one another is psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody in your heart to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:18-20) What you sing about reveals your heart. Allow the living Word to flow out of you as a lifegiving river. As you read the Bible for all it’s worth, you will walk out of solitary confinement into the light of freedom in Christ. Cooking With Lizzie

Christmas Cookie Centerpiece Follow the recipes for Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies and Christmas Sugar Cookies as directed except increase the flour by 1/2 cup in each recipe. (Since the cookies are going to be handled a good deal, a firmer dough is preferable but the cookies will still be good to eat.) Be sure to cut a variety of shapes: bells, stars, Christmas stockings, Christmas trees, Santas. Before baking, make a small hole at the top of each cookie. Bake cookies as directed in the recipes. When cookies are cool, decorate with Decorating Icing, white or tinted. Using a waxed paper cone or a decorating tube fitted with a writing tip, fill in the features or outline the shapes made by the cutters. If desired, decorate with silver dragées. With beaded dressmakers' pins, attach cookies to a styrofoam cone. (The one pictured on the opposite page is 12 inches tall and 7 inches in diameter at the base.) Start the pinning with the bottom row of cookies; then move to the row above, arranging the cookies so they overlap slightly. To make the tree more festive, fill in spaces with little red bows and holly leaves. Split red Hall Sheen ribbon into narrow strips and make bow loops. Cut holly leaves from green Hall Sheen ribbon and stick onto the underside of the bow at an angle. Attach the decorations to the tree with dressmakers' pins. NOTE: You can also use these cookies as decorations on a tabletop Christmas tree. Thread ribbon through the holes and tie cookies onto the branches.

Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies 1/2 cup butter, softened 2 T. cocoa 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 egg 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 cup unsulphured dark molasses 1 tsp. salt 3 cups flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, then molasses. Sift together remaining ingredients and stir in, mixing until well blended. Chill 1 hour. On a floured surface, roll out dough until 3/16 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 350° oven 7 minutes. Remove from sheet immediately and cool on a wire rack. Decorate as desired. Makes about 4 dozen 2-inch cookies or 2 dozen large cookies.

Decorating Icing 2 cups confectioners' sugar Food coloring (optional) 1 egg white, lightly beaten Mix sugar and a spoonful of egg white in a small bowl; beat until smooth, gradually adding more egg white to reach the desired

HOW TO FIND TIME TO EXERCISE A new year marks a great time to embrace change. Many people do just that by making resolutions designed to improve their lives in the year and years ahead. Resolutions regarding personal health are annually among the most popular changes people hope to make at the dawn of a new year. In fact, a quick scan of annual lists citing the most popular resolutions found that pledges to eat healthier and exercise more can be found at or near the top of such lists. Though such lists might not have been compiled using the most scientific of

methods, it’s no secret that getting healthier and looking better is a goal many people strive for upon the arrival of January 1. Unfortunately, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report suggested that 80 percent of resolutions fail, oftentimes as early as February. For those who don’t just want but need to get healthier, failure to live up to a resolution to exercise more can have potentially devastating consequences. If exercising more is a goal in the year ahead, the following are a few strategies to make that happen. • Exercise in the early morning. As the day pro-

gresses, unforeseen challenges or forgotten commitments have a way of devouring time initially earmarked for exercise. Exercise first thing in the morning before any commitments to work and family hijack the time you have committed to exercising. • Take on less responsibility. Professionals and parents often cite commitments to work and family as the primary reasons they aren’t getting enough exercise. While those are perfectly reasonable excuses to skip a workout, men and women who recognize the long-term benefits of routine exercise may be

compelled to take on less responsibility at work while also making an effort to divvy up responsibilities at home more equitably. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ongoing exercise can reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and some cancers. The CDC also notes that routine exercise strengthens bones and muscles while improving mood. Taking on more responsibility at work might be great for your career, but that may prove a Pyrrhic victory if your long-term health is jeopardized. Parents can

discuss with their spouse how to better share responsibilities at home so both moms and dads can get regular exercise. • Embrace more efficient exercise routines. Rather than working a single muscle group at a time, which can be both timeconsuming and boring, men and women can adapt their workout routines to focus on multi-muscle exercises. Work with a personal trainer to make your workout as efficient as possible. • Schedule your routine each week. Each week is different, so while it may be ideal to establish a workout

routine in which you exercise at the same time each day, that’s not always going to be possible. Failing to exercise on a day you had intended to workout can compromise your motivation to workout in the future, so sit down at the beginning of each week to examine your commitments for the days ahead and schedule times to exercise in the next seven days. This can keep you on track and help you avoid the disappointment of missing a workout because life got in the way. Plan now for a better year!

PREVENT COLDS AND FLU BEFORE THEY START Though the holiday season is a joyous time of year, it’s also one when many people succumb to cold and flu. Spending so much time indoors in close proximity to others can increase a person’s susceptibility to flu and cold, so it’s no surprise that the holiday season, when many people spend lots of time celebrating indoors with family and friends, marks the unofficial start to cold and flu season. Despite what Mom might have told you about going out into the cold with a wet head or leaving home without wearing a coat, such actions do not increase your risk for cold and flu. But being cooped up indoors, where germs from others who are sick can fester, can increase that risk. Cold weather also can be a factor, but not for the reason you think. According to a 2007 study from researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the influenza virus is more stable and can stay in the air longer when the air is cold and dry. Dr. Peter Palese, a flu researcher who is professor and chairman of the school’s microbiol-

ogy department, examined guinea pigs infected with the flu virus to determine the connection between the flu and cold weather. Dr. Palese varied the air temperature and humidity in the guinea pigs’ environment and determined that flu transmission was best at 41 F, while the prevalence of transmission declined as the temperature rose. By the time temperatures reached 86 F, the virus was not transmitted at all. Low humidity also helped transmit the virus, and high humidity stopped the spread. Flu viruses spread through the air in water droplets expelled from sick individuals’ noses and mouths. High humidity may cause these droplets to fall to the ground before they can infect someone else. Colds are largely transmitted through surface contact with the virus or direct contact with a sick individual. The cold virus is then contracted on the hands and typically transferred to the nose, eyes or mouth through inadvertent touching of these areas. Spending time indoors in close quarters with other people, which is more

common in the winter, can facilitate the spread of colds as well as the flu virus. There are many ways to reduce your risk of contracting a cold or the flu virus this winter. Perhaps no preventive measure is more effective than getting a flu shot. In addition, wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs, and disinfect remote controls, computer keyboards, tablets, mobile phones, and other items that are handled by multiple people on any given day. In addition, spend as much time outdoors as possible so you can escape potentially contaminated indoor air. If you come down with the flu, increase the humidity in your home by running the shower with the door open, using a recreational aquarium or boiling pots of water. Maintain a warm indoor temperature to reduce the likelihood that the flu virus will spread. Other ways to reduce your risk for cold and flu include: • maintaining a healthy diet • getting several minutes of sunlight per day • exercising regularly

HOLIDAY STRESS-BUSTING Many people find the holiday season can be stressful. Holiday hosts may bear the brunt of seasonal stress, but the season also may be challenging for those who have lost loved ones or do not have close families to celebrate with. When holiday hustle leads to frayed nerves, there are some things people can do to reduce their stress. • Hit the gym. The American Society for Exercise Physiologists says exercise has been shown to

increase one’s sense of wellbeing, mood, self-esteem, and stress responsivity. Stress can rev up adrenaline, and exercise can help relieve any pent-up energy and frustration. • Eat the right foods. Stay hydrated and eat plenty of fiber, fruits and vegetables. This can help stabilize blood sugar levels and decrease cravings for comfort foods. Do not turn to caffeine, sugary sweets and alcohol to reduce stress, as such foods and beverages may

on l y c omp ou n d t h e problem. • Get ample rest. Go to bed and rise at the same time each day. Many adults function best when they get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night, and a good night’s rest can help in the fight against stress. • Engage in activities you enjoy. Make time for activities that you like to do, such as crafts, hobbies and listening to music. Take time away from holiday tasks to give yourself a break.

• Skip the need to be perfect. Christmas movies and holiday ideals portrayed in advertisements can put undue pressure on the average person. Ignore any perceived pressure to have a perfect holiday season, instead resolving to enjoy the time with family and friends. Stress can impact the ability to enjoy oneself during the holidays. But stress can be overcome, even during this busy time of year.

in the aged population in the United States. A study published in the Caspian Journal of Internal Medicine found incidence of knee OA is rising by increasing average age of the general population. Age, weight, trauma, and repetitive movements are common risk factors for the condition. According to Dr. Scott Paris of Central Jersey Spine and Wellness, more than 27 million people in the country suffer from knee arthritis. An estimated 37 percent of Canadians aged 20 or older who had been diagnosed with arthritis reported osteoarthritis, with 29 percent occurring in the knees, states Statistics Canada. Knee arthritis occurs when there is a degeneration of articular cartilage that covers and pro-

tects the patella (knee cap) at the knee joint, offers the online resource ArthritisHealth. Since this cartilage has no nerve endings, some people can experience arthritis but feel no pain. However, pain may occur when doing specific activities that cause impact b e t we e n b one s , l i ke jumping, walking up stairs or certain sports. Over time, knee arthritis may become worse, and pain can be accompanied by stiffness and loss of mobility. This may be accompanied by knee locking or buckling. Those who suffer from knee OA may seek treatm e nt . In 2 0 1 4 , t h e Osteoarthritis Research Society International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting osteoarthritis research and treatment, updated its recommendations for the treatment of osteoarthritis targeted to different patient characteristics. The main categories of treatment include non-drug treatments, medication, injections, and surgery. • Non-drug treatments: Examples of non-drug treatments include exercise, stretching and range-ofmovement strategies. Weight loss can alleviate excess strain placed on the hips and knees and reduce pain. Braces, sleeves and orthotics may help reduce pain and joint stiffness when directed properly through a specialist. • Medications: Many medications are geared around reducing inflammation and pain and include over-the-counter pain relievers and NSAIDs, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium. Topical NSAIDs may be tried, and these can reduce

the risk of gastrointestinal side effects from oral medications. OARSI also found that the antidepressant duloxetine may help with chronic knee pain. • Injections: The Arthritis Foundation says that some doctors can inject corticosteroid compounds directly into affected joints. Use of hyaluronic acid injections can supplement the natural substance that gives joint fluid its lubrication and viscosity. These injections may help relieve pain and improve mobility. • Surgery: In cases when the aforementioned treatments are unsuccessful, doctors may suggest surgery. The Arthritis Foundation says joint lavage and arthroscopic debridement, which involve flushing the joint with a sterile saline solution and the surgical removal of tissue fragments from the joint, are controversial but may help some people achieve short-term relief. Partial knee replacement may be another option that offers a similar improvement in function, but fewer complications than a total knee replacement. Osteoarthritis in the knee can be painful and restrictive. Working with a qualified doctor, individuals can develop a treatment plan that works for their specific conditions.

TAME STRESS AND IMPROVE HEALTH Stress can affect people of any age. While small amounts of stress may stimulate adrenaline responses and help people power through difficult projects or solve problems, chronic stress can impact the mind and body in harmful ways. WebMD defines stress as any change in the environment that requires the body to react and adjust in response. The body may react to stress physically, emotionally and/or mentally. Positive stress, called eustress, can take the form of getting a new job with greater responsibilities.

13

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

However, it’s the bad stress — distress — that can cause tension and other negative consequences. Money, health and relationships are some of the common contributors to stress in the United States. Seventy-seven percent of Americans regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress, and 73 percent experience psychological symptoms from stress. Statistics Canada indicated that, in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available, 23 percent of Canadians ages 15 and older (6.7 million people) reported that most days

were “quite a bit” or “extremely” stressful. Stress can have many implications. When the body is stressed, muscles tense up and chronic stress can cause the muscles in the body to stay taut and tense for long periods of time, says the American Psychological Association. This may lead to tension headaches and musculoskeletal disorders. The Mayo Clinic advises that stress can cause fatigue, changes in sex drive, stomach upset, and difficulty sleeping. Stress also affects mood, potentially resulting in lack of motiva-

tion or focus, anxiety, sadness, and/or angry outbursts. Healthline links chronic stress to behaviors such as overeating, not eating enough, alcohol or drug abuse, and social withdrawal. Reducing stress is a priority for many people. Although it is not an easy undertaking, slowly removing stressors from one’s life and taking steps toward changing one’s responses to stressful situations can help. There are many stress-management strategies, and not every one is right for all individuals. However, the following techniques may be helpful.

• Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress. • Meditation: Mindful meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and tai chi are ways to focus the brain away from stressful situations. • Socialization: Talking and spending time with friends or family can relieve stress. • Hobbies: Crafts, hobbies and other engaging activities can direct attention away from stress. • Talk therapy: Seeing a therapist may help some people work through stress and discover additional techniques to change how they respond to stress. • Situation changes:

Changing a job, residence or a condition that removes a source of stress may be handy. Many people suffer from stress, which can be very harmful if not dealt with healthily and readily.

COPING WITH FEWER HOURS OF DAYLIGHT Daylight saving time comes to an end each fall, at a time when the hours of available sunlight already are beginning to decline. Some people are more accustomed to darkness than others. Norwegians, Swedes and people living in Alaska and the upper reaches of Canada near or above the Arctic Circle may go through a period when winters can be especially dark. Fairbanks, Alaska, gets just three hours and 42 minutes of sunlight on the winter solstice. Those in Barrow, Alaska, will endure a period of 67 days of darkness, according to Alaska. org. Residents of Seattle, which is even further north than cities such as Fargo, North Dakota, or Portland, Maine, deal with more darkness than those living outside the city may know. Although much of the rest of North America doesn’t experience such

profound periods of darkness, when the darkness of fall and winter arrives, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. Borrowing some of the coping mechanisms relied on in northern latitudes can help many people to see the dark in a different light. • Be aware of SAD. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons, beginning and ending at about the same times each year. Symptoms tend to start in the fall and continue into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel moody. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to severe problems if left untreated. Light treatment, talk therapy and medication can help people who are susceptible to SAD. • Make daylight hours

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ve let yourself be distracted from what’s really important. But love finally gets your attention this week. However, it comes with a challenge that could create a problem. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to bully others into following your lead. Best advice: Persuade, don’t push, and you’ll get the cooperation you need to move forward with your plans. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist the urge to gloat now that you’ve proved your detractors wrong. Instead, charm them back into your circle. Remember: A former foe can become your best ally. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might want to claim all the credit for making this holiday season special. But is it worth producing a lot of hurt feelings by rejecting offers of help? Think about it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Ignore a co-worker’s questionable behavior. Instead, put your energy into making your own project special. Then sit back and purr over your welldeserved applause. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not want to accept those suggested changes in your workplace. But don’t chuck them out before you check them out. You could be happily surprised. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your holiday planning might have to take a back seat for a bit so that you

can handle a problem with a friend or family member. Your schedule resumes by the 9th. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships in general benefit during the early part of the week, including in the workplace. Also expect some overdue changes in a personal situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) “Prudence” should be your watchword this week. Best not to be too open about some of the things that are currently happening in your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Money is on your mind, so you’d best mind how you’re spending it. Take another look at that holiday budget and see where you can make adjustments. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resolving to revive an old friendship could open some old wounds. Are you sure you want to risk that? Think this through before making a commitment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your need to know more about a new friend could lead to some startling revelations. Best advice: Keep an open mind about what you learn until all the facts are in. BORN THIS WEEK: Your loyalty to friends makes you a very special person to those whose lives you’ve touched. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
