Responsible Reptile Ownership DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why are some species of reptiles illegal to own in certain states, like New York? — Darren in Fort Myers, Florida DEAR DARREN: Reptiles ranging from tiny turtles and lizards to iguanas and boa constrictors are popular pets and can be found in many homes. They are odorless, fairly quiet and mostly keep to themselves in a contained environment. However, as The New York Times reports, many states have concerns about how reptiles are obtained, housed and transported before they come into a home as a pet. These methods can have a terrible impact on the environment as well as the welfare of the animal. A 2014 investigation into a major wholesaler found that 80

percent of the reptiles and amphibians in its care were sick, injured or dead due to overcrowding, stress and poor hygiene and nutrition, the Times reports. Capturing healthy reptiles in the wild can impact the local ecology, but the alternative, breeding in captivity, can create increased susceptibility to disease. Reptiles and amphibians also need a lot of attention and care to thrive in a captive environment, something many owners don't consider. Up to 75 percent of them die in their first year after being brought home. New York's reptile laws, like others, are meant to discourage bringing in pets that, if they escape, can damage the local ecology, and to comply with state health requirements. If you decide to own an amphibian or reptile, do your part by first learning as much as you can about caring properly for the pet. Follow your state's laws about exotic pets, and source only from reputable dealers. Find a veterinarian who specializes in these pets and get a checkup as soon as you purchase one. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

ITʟS ILLINOISʟ BIRTHDAY! HEY, WAIT ‌ COME BACK BY AUSTIN BERG

Illinois celebrated its 199th birthday Dec. 3. The eventual Land of Lincoln first became a state in 1818. Back then, nearly all of Illinois’ fertile prairie was left unsettled. But it seems like Springfield is doing its best to return to that remote state, according to new data from the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS data dump Nov. 30 was a crummy birthday gift. But it underscored the biggest policy problem with which state lawmakers must reckon in Illinois’ bicentennial year: flight. In the 2015 tax year (2015-2016), Illinois sustained record losses of both income and people to other states. Illinois saw a net loss of nearly 42,000 tax returns to other states on the year, representing a net loss of more than 86,100 people (measured in exemptions) according to the IRS. That’s

an all-time high. And when people leave the state, they don’t just take their talent, drive and ingenuity with them. They take their wallets, too. Illinois lost $4.75 billion in adjusted gross income, or AGI, on net to other states in tax year 2015. That’s also an all-time high. While residents saw $6.35 billion in AGI “walk in Illinois from other states, $11.1 billion “walked out of Illinois to another state. Care about a balanced budget? Improved infrastructure? Adequate social services? One must care about the continued erosion of Illinois’ tax base due to outmigration then, too. Now, to dispel a couple of myths: It’s only retirees, and they’re leaving because they hate the weather. First, analysis of the same IRS data show millennials are the ones leading the Illinois exodus, not the

back to the White House. It seems, Trump's charge that "you don't see Merry Christmas anymore" was directed at his predecessor former President Barack Obama. You know, the fellow who Trump falsely suggested was a Muslim. Just to set the record straight, Obama repeatedly used the term “Merry Christmasâ€? during his time in office. And, when Obama was a state senator, I spent a fair amount of time chatting with him over lunch about religion and other things. He is not a Muslim. But hey, The Donald had “Merry Christmasâ€? printed on the White House holiday cards this year. Whether it’s the 10 Commandments or “Happy Ho l i d ay s v s . Me r r y Christmasâ€? on White House stationary, the controversies remind me of another I covered about a decade ago

elderly. And second, if the weather is so bad, how come Illinois lost people and income on net to every neighboring state? The Prairie State lost 21,800 residents to neighboring states in 2015-2016, measured in exemptions. Indiana led the pack, netting 8,200 Illinoisans. Illinois also lost more than $720 million in AGI on net to neighboring states. Wisconsin saw the largest net gain, with $253 million. It’s true that Illinois has had a people problem for decades. But the exodus accelerated in the wake of the 2011 temporary tax hikes. And it hasn’t slowed down. This consistent, worsening trend is an indictment of the policy status quo in Illinois. The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute found in 2016 that nearly half of Illinoisans wanted to leave the state. Pollsters asked why. The No. 1 response? Taxes. And while Illinois’ temporary income tax hike partially sunset at the start of 2015, left to run wild was the largest tax Illinoisans p ay : prop er ty t axes. Illinoisans shoulder the heaviest property tax burden in the nation, according to a 2016 study from real estate services company CoreLogic. Yet for years, Springfield when a group wanted to place a nativity scene in the Illinois Capitol rotunda. A private group spent $7,000 to do just that. And then an atheist group demanded and received equal space. They put a display next to the Baby Jesus. And then a menorah was erected next the Christian and atheist exhibits. Why is it so important to some folks to use taxpayerowned property — whether it be a statehouse rotunda or White House stationary — to promote a religious viewpoint? This holiday season, do we really care what is etched into a courthouse monument or printed on a White House holiday card? Isn’t it more important what’s inscribed in the hearts of men and women? Scott Reeder is a veteran statehouse journalist. He works as a freelance reporter in the Springfield area and produces the podcast Suspect Convictions. has rejected any substantial reforms to address the costdrivers behind those property tax bills: the highest number of local governments in the nation, skyrocketing local pension costs and an unfair bargaining regime that stacks the deck against taxpayers in negotiations, to name a few. Serious proposals to protect homeowners from skyrocketing bills have been rebuffed as well. And in the face of this outmigration problem, Illinois lawmakers passed the largest permanent income tax hike in state history in July. Of course, taxes aren’t the only reason people are leaving. The state’s laggard economy is another likely culprit. Nearly 100,000 Illinoisans have dropped out of the workforce this year alone.  Illinois’ exodus of people and money is the state’s most pressing policy problem. Until lawmakers get serious about addressing its causes, there’s little reason to think the trend will change. Austin Berg is a writer for the Illinois Policy Institute. He wrote this column for the Illinois News Network. Austin can be reached at aberg@illinoispolicy.org.

They call him the â€œ10 Commandments Judge.â€? You know the fellow I’m talking about. Yes, Roy Moore, Alabama U.S. Senate candidate. Before the most recent controversy swirled around him, he was best known for defying a federal court order to remove a monument of the 10 Commandments that he had erected in the entryway of the Alabama Supreme Court. The controversy raised his prominence to a level that has enabled him to be the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate. We’ll find out next week, whether Moore is elected. But what we already know is that he has used a perception of religious persecution to further his political career. He’s hardly alone. Just last week, President Donald Trump was in St. Louis bragging that he brought “Merry Christmasâ€?

BLUFORD GIRL SCOUT RECEIVES GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) is pleased to announce that Brenna Collins from Bluford has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can receive. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, called From Victim to Victor, Brenna hosted a series of self-defense classes for area girls and young women aged 6 to 18. She has been a student of Shotokan style karate for more than a decade, during which she has earned her brown belt, and felt that sharing her passion with others could help them feel more confident and be more prepared to respond to a dangerous situation. First, Brenna planned curriculum to teach students self-defense techniques. Next, she recorded videos demonstrating selfdefense moves, as well as personal safety tips, which she publishe d on a Facebook page where she also promoted the selfdefense classes she had planned. She also appeared on two local radio shows and was interviewed by local newspapers to spread the word about her project. Once classes started, Brenna developed new leadership skills while working with students of all different ages and martial arts experience. She kept worksheets to help keep track of students’ progress, and worked to give one-on-one guidance. Through the series, students learned basic safety tips, evasive maneuvers and weapon evasion. Using the demonstration videos she had recorded, her students can continue to practice these techniques in the future and share what they have learned with others. At the end of the sessions, all of the participants shared that they felt more self-confident and safe. “My goal was for my students to learn that fighting is never the answer, but that they should be prepared with options should

Brenna Collins they find themselves in a threatening situation,” said Brenna. She shared that she too, developed new skills throughout the course of her Gold Award project: “By teaching the classes, I better understand the concepts that I demonstrated,” she said. “I learned that different people learn in different ways and I have expanded on my communication skills as well as my patience.” Brenna is the daughter of Chris and Tricia Collins. She finished her Girl Scout Gold Award project shortly after graduation from Webber Township High School and is currently a freshman at Rend Lake College. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, recognizes a Girl Scout's commitment to excellence as she develops skills and values to meet present and future challenges in her life. To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, a Girl Scout Senior or Girl Scout Ambassador must design and carry out a project that fulfills a need within a girl’s community, creates change, and is sus-

tainable. The project must be completed with a suggested minimum of 80 hours of work. Only about 5 percent of eligible girls earn the prestigious Gold Award. Today, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is the largest voluntary organization for girls in the world. Its sole focus is to meet the needs of all girls (ages 5-17) from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork. GSSI provides a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience to over 12,400 girls and nearly 5,000 adult volunteers in 40 ½ counties in southern Illinois. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a not-for-profit organization supported by various United Ways throughout the region. Girl Scouts is a Proud Partner of United Way. EAGLE LIFE

Ancestry.Christ Many people are curious about their family roots. My wife and I went through a company that traces ones ancestry through DNA testing. I was somewhat surprised by the results. I remember a cartoon in which someone says, “I shook the family tree and all that fell out was a bunch of nuts. Matthew begins his gospel with the ancestry of Christ. Jewish scholars knew that the promised Messiah must come from the tribe of Judah, through the lineage of King David. Surprisingly, the lineage of Christ includes some women who were not Jewish and had not lived good, exemplary lives. Why were these women in Christ’s ancestry? Because they were good? NO! God includes the good, the bad, and the ugly to showcase his amazing grace. This is what Christmas is all about. Take a look at these women in the ancestry of Christ found in Matthew 1. TAMAR. Tamar was married to Judah’s son Er. Her husband was so wicked that we have this postscript, “Er, Judah’s first born, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the

Lord put him to death. (Genesis 38:6) Tamar’s life reads like a tragic soap opera. Christ came to bring hope. Tamar, by God’s grace, was included in the ancestry of Christ. (Matthew 1:3; John 3:1315) RAHAB. “Solomon, the father of Boaz whose mother was Rahab. (Matthew 1:5) Rahab was not even Jewish, but she was grafted into the Jewish lineage of the Messiah. Rahab was a prostitute who hid the two Israeli spies who were scouting out Jericho, before the Israeli army destroyed it. Rahab put faith in the living God and received the promise that she and her family would be spared. (Joshua 2; 6) The scriptures tell us, “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who we re d i s ob e d i e nt . (Hebrews 11:30-31) RUTH. This Moabite woman married a Jewish man who came into her country because of a

famine. When he died, Ruth left everything and went with her mother-inlaw Naomi back to Bethlehem. She put her trust in the true living God and met, by the providence of God, Boaz, who became her “kinsman redeemer and married her. Boaz was of the tribe of Judah and Ruth became the great grandmother of King David and a direct ancestor of Christ. The book of Ruth is an ancient Jewish love story and foreshadowing of our kinsman redeemer — Christ Jesus, who, incidentally was born in Bethlehem, the hometown of Ruth and Boaz. BATHSHEBA. “David w a s t h e f at h e r of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife. (Matthew 1:6) Matthew called her “Uriah’s wife because David had no right to take Bathsheba like he did. David suffered the consequences of his sin. David later repented. Bathsheba lost her husband and suffered the loss of her firstborn son. But she found comfort and hope in Jehovah God and became a direct ancestor of Christ the Messiah. MARY. Matthew concluded his list of the ancestry of Christ, “And Jacob, the father of

Joseph, the husband of Mary and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. (Matthew 1:16) This young Jewish girl didn’t have an easy time. Her husband, Joseph, initially thought she was unfaithful when he heard she was pregnant. Joseph was determined to divorce her privately, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you are to give him the name of Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:18-21) Mary, a humble, obedient young virgin, was blessed to be the mother of Christ the Lord. (Matthew 1:2224) Why did God include these women in the ancestry of Christ? Because no matter how ordinary, good, bad, or ugly one’s life may be, God’s grace is greater still. There is a Redeemer who came to save his people from their sins — Jesus Christ, the Lord. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Love Match Tennis is the only sport in the world to use the word "love" when it comes to scoring. Ironically, when you have nothing, zero points, in tennis, this means you have "love." But in the early '70s, the sports world and sports reporters had something all right — they had the "Love Match" between tennis' top two players, Jimmy Connors and Chrissie Evert. Connors was brash and boorish on the court. His

game was about destruction and violence. Connors broke his back during every match. In a sport that harbored a private club mentality, Connors was a prizefighter. (Indeed, he played two winner-take-all prize matches at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in the mid'70s, winning both times.) Evert was "Little Miss Icicle." Evert had her dad as a coach; Connors his mom. In fact, all they really seemed to have in common was a two-handed backhand and the Wilson racquets they used to play with. Tennis is the only major sport where men and women play simultaneously. No match is televised without repeated cuts to the girlfriend or husband of the player on the court. Connors and Evert were the Charles and Diana of their day, and the whole world watched. Rumors that the then 17-year-old Evert and 19-year-old Connors were dating began swirling when the two started missing tennis practices, instead

going on dates. The missed practices were few and far between, however, and both became top-10 players. Then, in 1973, Connors proposed to Evert, and she accepted. Going into the 1974 Wimbledon Championships, bookies were giving 33-1 odds that the engaged couple would win Wimbledon. They both rolled through the tournament in convincing fashion, despite the incredible pressure on them both to win, and emerged victorious. Together, standing on the famed Centre Court of Wimbledon, they held their trophies aloft and kissed. Later that night, Connors gave her a gold charm bracelet — a style of jewelry still referred to as a "tennis bracelet." Eventually, both decided that their schedules and desire to be No. 1 made their proposed marriage impossible. Evert went on

to marry John Lloyd, followed by Olympic skier Andy Mill and, briefly, golfer Greg Norman. Weep not for Connors, though. He briefly dated a Miss World after the breakup before settling down with

Country Bob’s Christmas Cooking

I love the local company who has grown way outside the southern Illinois boundary. The love of God, hard work, dedication and going the extra mile were all elements that helped to produce quality products. I personally use Country Bob’s products — all so good, especially the allpurpose sauce and seasoning salt — year round. During the holidays it’s an absolute must when it comes to appetizers. Below are some of my favorite go-tos.

Wingettes

5 lbs. chicken wings 4 cups flour 1/4 cup granulated garlic 4 tsp. Country Bob's Seasoning Salt

1/4 tsp. red pepper Oil for deep-frying 1/2 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

Cut off and discard wing tips and separate each wing into 2 pieces at joint if desired. Rinse chicken wings; drain and set aside. Combine flour, granulated garlic, Country Bob's Seasoning Salt and red pepper in a double thickness paper bag and shake until well mixed. Add wings, several at a time, and shake until coated. Heat oil to 350° in deep fryer. Add wings, several at a time, to hot oil and fry for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and place in large bowl. Add desired amount of Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and toss lightly until coated. Serve with additional sauce. Yield: variable

Hot Reuben Dip

8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1½ cups (6 oz.) shredded Swiss cheese 1/2 cup Thousand Island dressing

1/3 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce 4 oz. deli-sliced corned beef, chopped 1/2 cup sauerkraut, drained

Combine cream cheese, 1 cup Swiss cheese, dressing and Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce in bowl and mix well. Stir in corned beef. Spread mixture in 9-inch deep-dish pie plate or quiche pan. Top with sauerkraut and remaining ½ cup Swiss cheese. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until bubbly around edge. Serve hot with pretzel crackers or cocktail rye bread slices. Yield: 2½ cups (about 10 servings)

Family Reunion Cheese Balls

24 oz. cream cheese, softened 1/2 tsp. minced garlic 3 T. Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce 1 T. hot pepper sauce

4 cups (16 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup chopped pecans 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Combine cream cheese, garlic, Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and hot pepper sauce in food processor or blender and process until blended. Add cheddar cheese and pulse until mixed but with cheddar flakes still visible. Divide into several portions and shape into balls or logs as desired. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate or freeze. Grind pecans and mix with parsley on waxed paper. Just before serving, roll cheese balls in pecan mixture to coat. Place on serving plates and serve at room temperature with assorted crackers. Yield: variable

Polish Sausages, WOW!

2 lbs. Polish sausages 1 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

1 (16 oz.) can whole berry cranberry sauce Salt and pepper to taste

Slice sausages and brown lightly in skillet. Drain sausage and return to skillet. Add Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and cranberry sauce. Bring to simmer, stirring until sauce is well mixed. Simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper. Serve as an appetizer or snack or on hearty bread or rolls as sandwiches. Yield: variable

Country Bob's Shrimp Salad Deluxe

1 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce 1 T. prepared horseradish Salt and pepper to taste 3 cups peeled cocktail shrimp, cooked

Country Bob's Chip Dip

1 lb. lean ground beef 1 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 cup chopped onion

by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century French journalist, poet, aristocrat and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery — best known for his novella "The Little Prince" — who made the following sage observation: "A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." • Eggplants weren't always the deep purple

color we know today; originally, the vegetables were white. The color, paired with the ovoid shape, is how the eggplant got its name. • If you l ive i n Rochester, New York, you're doubtless used to dealing with the hazards and inconveniences of s n ow an d i c e. It ' s America's snowiest city, after all, averaging 94 inches every winter.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Start preparing now to make sure you get the credit you’re due for all that effort you put in to get that project off the ground. A new challenge emerges after the 15th. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re still charging full steam ahead on the job -- and that’s fine. But take time to share the joy of preparing for the upcoming holidays with folks you love. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A former detractor resists joining your ranks just yet. Give him or her time to learn more about what you’re doing. Meanwhile, devote more time to friends and family. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to be goaded into a tiff by someone who might be looking for a fight. Remain cool as you make your exit. Be assured that others will rally to your support. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Kudos on getting the well-deserved Lion’s share of the rewards for a job welldone. Now you can take a breather from your workaday duties and spend time with your family. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You enjoy a quick spurt of renewed energy just in time to meet that upcoming deadline. A potentially romantic situation looms. How it develops will be up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch out for distractions that could cause delays and leave you run-

• Those who study such things say that paternity leave can have significant domestic impacts. Research shows that men who take a few weeks of leave when they have an addition to their family spend more time on domestic chores and taking care of the kids than men who don't. They cook more, and they're even 50 percent more likely to do laundry. The most interesting finding, though, is the fact that these changes are long-term; the effect tends to last the rest of a man's life. • Those who suffer from nescience are unlikely to know what "nescience" means — an absence of

ning twice as fast to finish your work by the 15th. Then go ahead and have fun. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might prefer to work on current tasks on your own. But be open to a potentially useful suggestion from someone who admires you and wants to help. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Avoid rushing full gallop into that volunteer project without knowing what’s expected of you. Take things a step at a time as you begin to find your way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: You should begin to feel more comfortable expressing your emotions. This will go a long way in helping you with that personal situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An old friend gives confusing signals. Best advice: Don’t assume that things will necessarily work themselves out. Ask questions and demand straight answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new relationship needs time to develop. Be careful not to let your emotions flood your natural sense of caution. Meanwhile, check out that new job offer. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of right and wrong sometimes causes you to come into conflict with others. But you invariably come out ahead. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
