OPINIONS

GOD AND POLITICS BY SCOTT REEDER

They call him the “10 Commandments Judge.” You know the fellow I’m talking about. Yes, Roy Moore, Alabama U.S. Senate candidate. Before the most recent controversy swirled around him, he was best known for defying a federal court order to remove a monument of the 10 Commandments that he had erected in the entryway of the Alabama Supreme Court. The controversy raised his prominence to a level that has enabled him to be the

3

Republican nominee for U.S. Senate. We’ll find out next week, whether Moore is elected. But what we already know is that he has used a perception of religious persecution to further his political career. He’s hardly alone. Just last week, President Donald Trump was in St. Louis bragging that he brought “Merry Christmas” back to the White House. It seems, Trump's charge that "you don't see Merry Christmas anymore" was directed at his predecessor

former President Barack Obama. You know, the fellow who Trump falsely suggested was a Muslim. Just to set the record straight, Obama repeatedly used the term “Merry Christmas” during his time in office. And, when Obama was a state senator, I spent a fair amount of time chatting with him over lunch about religion and other things. He is not a Muslim. But hey, The Donald had “Merry Christmas” printed on the White House holiday cards this year. Whether it’s the 10 Commandments or “Happy Holidays vs. Mer r y Christmas” on White House stationary, the controversies remind me of another I covered about a decade ago when a group wanted to place a nativity scene in the Illinois Capitol rotunda. A private group spent $7,000 to do just that. And

then an atheist group demanded and received equal space. They put a display next to the Baby Jesus. And then a menorah was erected next the Christian and atheist exhibits. Why is it so important to some folks to use taxpayerowned property — whether it be a statehouse rotunda or White House stationary — to promote a religious viewpoint? This holiday season, do we really care what is etched into a courthouse monument or printed on a White House holiday card? Isn’t it more important what’s inscribed in the hearts of men and women? Scott Reeder is a veteran statehouse journalist. He works as a freelance reporter in the Springfield area and produces the podcast Suspect Convictions. He can be reached at ScottReeder1965@ gmail.com.

SHIMKUS STANDS UP FOR SECOND AMENDMENT C o n g re s s m a n Jo h n Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) praised the passage of H.R 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which allows law-abiding citizens with a concealed carry permit in one state to carry in another state without the fear of breaking the law. “The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (HR 38) is a common sense solution and I am proud to be a cosponsor of the bill,” Shimkus said. “If you can legally carry in Illinois, you should be allowed to carry in other states.” A l l 5 0 s t at e s a n d Washington D.C. currently issue concealed carry permits on some basis and the laws surrounding those permits

vary by state. This legislation is a solution to the confusing reciprocity agreements between states that are currently in place. Shimkus added, “This bill does not establish a federal permit or registry or anything like that. It just says that one state’s permit is good in another state…similar to your driver’s license.”

This bill does not increase access to firearms and it does not regulate how the states issue concealed carr y permits. H.R. 38 allows permits to be recognized from state to state, as long as permit holders follow the local concealed carry laws. Included in the package passed by the House is H.R. 4477, the Fix NICS Act. This

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas for 612 soldiers, thanks to local funeral home owners Mike and Judy Sutherland and their staff. Sutherland Garnier Funeral Home and Crematory of Centralia came up with the idea six years ago, and with the help of many other businesses and individuals it has grown yearly. In the beginning the goal was and remains the same: to put Christmas

stockings filled with stocking-stuffers. Items collected are candy canes, hard candy like Jolly Ranchers, etc., chewing gum, mints, multi vitamins, deodorant, moisturizer, lip balm, shampoo, eye drops, sun block, batteries (AA and AAA), decks of playing cards, crossword puzzle books, CDs and DVDs. Last year 501 soldiers received the stocking. This year the total jumped ap-

proximately 111, for a total of 612. For many receiving this gift, it was the only thing they got from home. The stocking-stuffer drive started in July this year in order to pull it all together and get these gifts mailed out in time for Christmas. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why are some species of reptiles illegal to own in certain states, like New York? — Darren in Fort Myers, Florida DEAR DARREN: Reptiles ranging from tiny turtles and lizards to iguanas and boa constrictors are popular pets and can be found in many homes. They are odorless, fairly quiet and mostly keep to themselves in a contained environment. However, as The New York Times reports, many states have concerns about how reptiles are obtained, housed and transported before they come into a home as a pet. These methods can have a terrible

impact on the environment as well as the welfare of the animal. A 2014 investigation into a major wholesaler found that 80 percent of the reptiles and amphibians in its care were sick, injured or dead due to overcrowding, stress and poor hygiene and nutrition, the Times reports. Capturing healthy reptiles in the wild can impact the local ecology, but the alternative, breeding in captivity, can create increased susceptibility to disease. Reptiles and amphibians also need a lot of attention and care to thrive in a captive environment, something many owners don't consider. Up to 75 percent of them die in their first year after being brought home. New York's reptile laws, like others, are meant to discourage bringing in pets that, if they escape, can damage the local ecology, and to comply with state health requirements. If you decide to own an amphibian or reptile, do your part by first learning as much as you can about caring properly for the pet.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Ancestry.Christ Many people are curious about their family roots. My wife and I went through a company that traces ones ancestry through DNA testing. I was somewhat surprised by the results. I remember a cartoon in which someone says, “I shook the family tree and all that fell out was a bunch of nuts.” Matthew begins his gospel with the ancestry of Christ. Jewish scholars knew that the promised Messiah must come from the tribe of Judah, through the lineage of King David. Surprisingly, the lineage of Christ includes some women who were not Jewish and had not lived good, exemplary lives. Why were these women in Christ’s ancestry? Because they were good? NO! God includes the good, the bad, and the ugly to showcase his amazing grace. This is what Christmas is all about. Take a look at these women in the ancestry of Christ found in Matthew 1. TAMAR. Tamar was married to Judah’s son Er. Her husband was so wicked that we have this postscript, “Er, Judah’s first born, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.” (Genesis 38:6) Tamar’s life reads like a

tragic soap opera. Christ came to bring hope. Tamar, by God’s grace, was included in the ancestry of Christ. (Matthew 1:3; John 3:13-15) RAHAB. “Solomon, the father of Boaz whose mother was Rahab.” (Matthew 1:5) Rahab was not even Jewish, but she was grafted into the Jewish lineage of the Messiah. Rahab was a prostitute who hid the two Israeli spies who were scouting out Jericho, before the Israeli army destroyed it. Rahab put faith in the living God and received the promise that she and her family would be spared. (Joshua 2; 6) The scriptures tell us, “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” (Hebrews 11:30-31) RUTH. This Moabite woman married a Jewish man who came into her country because of a famine. When he died, Ruth left everything and went with her mother-in-law Naomi back to Bethlehem. She put her trust in the true living God and met, by the providence of God, Boaz, who became her “kinsman redeemer” and married her. Boaz was of the tribe of Judah and Ruth became the great grandmother of King David and a direct ancestor of Christ. The book of Ruth is

Country Bob’s Christmas Cooking

I love the local company who has grown way outside the southern Illinois boundary. The love of God, hard work, dedication and going the extra mile were all elements that helped to produce quality products. I personally use Country Bob’s products — all so good, especially the allpurpose sauce and seasoning salt — year round. During the holidays it’s an absolute must when it comes to appetizers. Below are some of my favorite go-tos.

Wingettes

5 lbs. chicken wings 4 cups flour 1/4 cup granulated garlic 4 tsp. Country Bob's Seasoning Salt

1/4 tsp. red pepper Oil for deep-frying 1/2 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

Cut off and discard wing tips and separate each wing into 2 pieces at joint if desired. Rinse chicken wings; drain and set aside. Combine flour, granulated garlic, Country Bob's Seasoning Salt and red pepper in a double thickness paper bag and shake until well mixed. Add wings, several at a time, and shake until coated. Heat oil to 350° in deep fryer. Add wings, several at a time, to hot oil and fry for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and place in large bowl. Add desired amount of Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and toss lightly until coated. Serve with additional sauce. Yield: variable

Hot Reuben Dip

8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1½ cups (6 oz.) shredded Swiss cheese 1/2 cup Thousand Island dressing

1/3 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce 4 oz. deli-sliced corned beef, chopped 1/2 cup sauerkraut, drained

Combine cream cheese, 1 cup Swiss cheese, dressing and Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce in bowl and mix well. Stir in corned beef. Spread mixture in 9-inch deep-dish pie plate or quiche pan. Top with sauerkraut and remaining ½ cup Swiss cheese. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until bubbly around edge. Serve hot with pretzel crackers or cocktail rye bread slices. Yield: 2½ cups (about 10 servings)

Family Reunion Cheese Balls

24 oz. cream cheese, softened 1/2 tsp. minced garlic 3 T. Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce 1 T. hot pepper sauce

4 cups (16 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup chopped pecans 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Combine cream cheese, garlic, Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and hot pepper sauce in food processor or blender and process until blended. Add cheddar cheese and pulse until mixed but with cheddar flakes still visible. Divide into several portions and shape into balls or logs as desired. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate or freeze. Grind pecans and mix with parsley on waxed paper. Just before serving, roll cheese balls in pecan mixture to coat. Place on serving plates and serve at room temperature with assorted crackers. Yield: variable

Polish Sausages, WOW!

2 lbs. Polish sausages 1 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

1 (16 oz.) can whole berry cranberry sauce Salt and pepper to taste

Slice sausages and brown lightly in skillet. Drain sausage and return to skillet. Add Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and cranberry sauce. Bring to simmer, stirring until sauce is well mixed. Simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper. Serve as an appetizer or snack or on hearty bread or rolls as sandwiches. Yield: variable

Country Bob's Shrimp Salad Deluxe

1 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce 1 T. prepared horseradish Salt and pepper to taste 3 cups peeled cocktail shrimp, cooked

Peace on Earth and good will to men. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Start preparing now to make sure you get the credit you’re due for all that effort you put in to get that project off the ground. A new challenge emerges after the 15th. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re still charging full steam ahead on the job -- and that’s fine. But take time to share the joy of preparing for the upcoming holidays with folks you love. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A former detractor resists joining your ranks just yet. Give him or her time to learn more about what you’re doing. Meanwhile, devote more time to friends and family. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to be goaded into a tiff by someone who might be looking for a fight. Remain cool as you make your exit. Be assured that others will rally to your support. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Kudos on getting the well-deserved Lion’s share of the rewards for a job welldone. Now you can take a breather from your workaday duties and spend time with your family. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You enjoy a quick spurt of renewed energy just in time to meet that upcoming deadline. A potentially romantic situation looms. How it develops will be up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch out for distractions that could cause delays and leave you run-

ning twice as fast to finish your work by the 15th. Then go ahead and have fun. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might prefer to work on current tasks on your own. But be open to a potentially useful suggestion from someone who admires you and wants to help. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Avoid rushing full gallop into that volunteer project without knowing what’s expected of you. Take things a step at a time as you begin to find your way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: You should begin to feel more comfortable expressing your emotions. This will go a long way in helping you with that personal situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An old friend gives confusing signals. Best advice: Don’t assume that things will necessarily work themselves out. Ask questions and demand straight answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new relationship needs time to develop. Be careful not to let your emotions flood your natural sense of caution. Meanwhile, check out that new job offer. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of right and wrong sometimes causes you to come into conflict with others. But you invariably come out ahead. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
