NOW ACCEPTING PATIENTS!

Out of the Woods and Into the Fire We live in a time where we expect our athletes to be exceptional, to become "human cheat-codes" in the video-game parlance, and not simply adequate or even effective. For perhaps no other professional athlete, that sentiment rings far too true for one golfer — Tiger Woods, the King, one might say, of heightened expectations. As the PGA Tour's socalled 2017 NovemberDecember Challenge Season (or as some refer to the official-ish slate of shootout and skins tournaments that don't count toward a player's official earnings, the "Silly Season") begins, Tiger Woods has signaled he is all in. The problem is, he doesn't know what that means quite yet. The embattled former champion who once seemed destined to break every one of Jack Nicklaus'

I play. ... I'm still learning this body," Woods said. "Once I get a better understanding, I can give you a better answer." T h e He ro Wor l d Challenge was just the third tournament Tiger Woods has played in for the past two years. His exodus has been neatly filled by the arrival of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler. Unsurprisingly, the competitor who finished 15th in a field of 17 last year, who hasn't won a tournament since 2014, who hasn't played an official round in 10 months, still shows plenty of spark when their names come up. "In an ideal world, I would like to have them feel what some of them had to go against all those years," Woods said. Can Tiger win back his awe-stricken fan base and return to anything remotely like his championship form? All we know is that he's not out of the woods yet, and that's the real challenge.

Since his late May DUI arrest, where we learned his search for a cure from back pain included taking copious amounts of pills — Ambien, Dilaudid, THC, Vicodin and Xanax were found in his system — Tiger has been in hybrid pain and pill management. After his fourth back surgery in July fused together portions of his spinal cord, Tiger immediately set his sights on the course. SHIMKUS SPEAKS AT HOUSE-SENATE TAX CONFERENCE COMMITTEE OPEN MEETING Following lunch at the White Hous e wit h President Donald Trump today, Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) and members of the HouseSenate Conference Committee held an open meeting to discuss reconciling the House and Senate versions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. “We all have to be accountable to our voters, and I’ve always pushed for and promoted a fairer, flatter, simpler tax code, especially for the individuals,”

5

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

Shimkus said. “In my district, 80 percent currently file without itemizing. Under the House bill that amount will go to 90 percent. That’s 90 percent of my individual filers who will not itemize, and they’ll be able to use a simple postcard.” Adding to examples Shimkus has previously shared on social media, including a single mom making $30,000 and a family of four making $59,000, the congressman cited two examples from

correspondence and conversations with constituents in his opening remarks. “I got a response from one of my constituents who is a self-identified skeptic, responding to my newsletter,” Shimkus said. “He said, ‘I did the math on my taxes as a retired police officer on a pension and working part time and my wife working part time. Estimating a gross income of $76,000 married filing jointly under current law we would pay $6,502. Under the proposed changes, our tax liability

drops to $5,592 saving us $910.’” “I’m from a pretty poor district, but I also have some successful people,” Shimkus added. “I spoke to another constituent who has over $100 million sitting overseas, just waiting to be returned to Illinois to create jobs and put people back to work.” Shimkus also thanked the Senate for their inclusion of provisions to open a portion of the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to energy development, and to sell $600 million worth of oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), that allowed him to serve on the conference committee. The SPR provision falls under the jurisdiction of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, on which Shimkus serves.

largely status quo foreign policy, except more cautious than Barack Obama's and, especially, George W. Bush's. Amid the miasma of manufactured controversies, Trump's presidency is, as Mark Twain is supposed to have said of Wagner's music, "better than it sounds." If you got news only of Trump's official acts and knew nothing of his ongoing commentary, you'd think a rigorously rules-bound president occupied the White House. The defining feature of Trump's judicial nominees is a firm commitment to interpreting the Constitution and the laws as written. On the legislative front, Trump is getting closer to his first major victory, in pursuit of the stereotypical Republican policy goal of deficit-financed tax cuts. In the real world, the economy is growing at a nice clip, and the stock market is humming along, showing no signs that it believes that the republic is about to be destroyed by a "Mad King." None of this is to suggest that Trump's governing and his tweets are entirely distinguishable. Some of the tweets have had consequences, and, if nothing else, they are a dismaying window into his state of mind. But the tweets don't constitute the sum total of the administration. It's possible that Trump sees Twitter — and his other provocations — as a way to stir the pot, entertain himself, stoke his base, flog his enemies and vent his frustrations separate and distinct from decisions of government, undertaken under the influence of, by and large, impressive, well-meaning advisers. Trump's presidency is much better than his Twitter feed. Although he stands ready and willing to convince you otherwise, 280 characters at a time.

The president of the United States wakes up some mornings seemingly determined to convince as many people as possible that he's unsuited to high office. Fortunately for him, he has a Twitter account allowing him to act on this impulse immediately and without any filter. Trump recently retweeted three videos from an apparatchik of an extremist party in Britain purporting to show acts of violence by Muslims. One of them is reportedly a fake. He followed up with a tweet calling for the firing of "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough on the basis of a noxious conspiracy theory. (A woman with a heart condition died in Scarborough's district office when he was a congressman. Ever since, a kooky fringe has accused him of murder.) It's difficult to exaggerate how mind-blowing these tweets are. If a friend on Facebook shared the fake Muslim video, you'd hesitate to credit any of his opinions going forward, let alone bestow on him the biggest megaphone on planet Earth. If a candidate for town council called for an investigation of Scarborough for allegedly murdering one of his interns, you'd doubt his fitness to decide whether to approve a zoning permit, let alone to wield the world's most fearsome nuclear arsenal. Yet Trump's presidency operates on a largely separate track than his Twitter feed and his other offscript interjections and pronouncements. His domestic policy is so conventional that it could have Rich Lowry is editor of been cooked up by Paul the National Review. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Spirit of Christmas For many, the world seems to be spinning out of control, rife with turmoil and a sense of hopelessness. Recently a young terrorist detonated a pipe-bomb, that was strapped around his chest, in a New York subway. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured besides himself. He told authorities that he had intentionally picked his target in front of a poster of Santa Clause. Perhaps, like many people, he has a skewed idea of what Christmas is all about. Christmas is not about Santa Clause, but about a Savior. It’s not about expensive gifts under a tree, but about the one who came to die on the tree for the sins of the world. An angel appeared to a humble carpenter in a dream. “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a son and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:18-23) Christmas is so unique and wonderful, because it is about hope, love, peace, joy, light, and life. A few months ago, some friends cleaned out their garage and had a pile of stuff in the driveway waiting to be hauled away. I saw some large wooden letters painted red underneath all the rubble. They gave

me permission to take them. I pulled them out and noticed that the letters spelled “HOPE”. In the middle of the “O” is a cutout of the nativity — Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus. I set them up on my lawn with a spotlight shining on them to remind those passing by that Christmas is about hope. If your life has collapsed into a pile of rubble, experience the true Spirit of Christmas. Explore these wonderful elements of Christmas. THE MIRACLE. Christmas abounds in miracles. The most mysterious miracle is the virgin birth of Christ. Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah’s virgin birth centuries before it occurred in Isaiah 7:13-14. Matthew gives us this narrative, “After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18, 20; Luke 1:26-37) The Spirit of Christmas is the Holy Spirit. The angel gave the virgin Mary this assurance, “For with God nothing will be impossible.” (Luke 1:37) Believe God for Christmas miracles. THE MARVEL. Some refer to the “magic” of Christmas. I prefer to call it the “marvel” of Christmas. Mar vel can be defined as something that causes wonder, astonishment, or intense surprise.

1. Is the book of Matthew in the Old or Ne w Te s t a m e nt or neither? 2. Where did the angel Gabriel appear to Mary saying, "Blessed art thou among women."?

MAKING CHRISTMAS SPECIAL The Kaskaskia College faculty and staff helped make Christmas special for current KC students and their children. Students with financial need and children under the age of 12 were identified and contacted to participate in the

Secret Santa Program. Faculty and staff volunteers “adopted” and shopped for gifts for the children. Each child received several gifts including clothing, toys, and activities. The students themselves also received a gift purchased from em-

Smelling-Salt Bottle Smelling salts have been used to revive someone who is feeling faint or has lost consciousness since the days of the Romans. But it was not until the 18th century that smelling-salt holders became fashionable. Smelling salts (ammonium carbonate and water) release an ammonia gas that irritates the inside of the nose and causes rapid breathing. This means more oxygen is inhaled. Ammonia was made from shaved deer horns in ancient times and often was called "spirit of hartshorn." Victorians often used perfume with the smelling salts. The smelling-salt holder was opened and waved near the nose of the troubled patient. Many of the bottles were curved. Some were made of decorated metal and worn as part of a necklace. Some just looked like small saltshakers. A 2 5/8inch marbleized glass "shaker" made of light blue and milk glass with a threaded cap sold for $293 at a Norman Heckler sale in Connecticut. It probably was made in Boston about 1850. *** Q: Our church owns an 1892 German Bible signed by Kaiser Wilhelm. It's been stored for many years in a

safety deposit box. It's now on unprotected display in our church. I believe it has some value and should be protected, if only for the historic value of the Kaiser personally giving it to the church. I would appreciate any information you can give me about the Bible. A: Most old Bibles aren't worth a lot of money, but Kaiser Wilhelm's signature could make it very valuable. It would have to be seen by an expert to authenticate the signature. Wilhelm II (1859-1941) was Germany's last Kaiser. He reigned from 1881 to 1918, when he abdicated and left Germany. If the church is going to display the Bible publicly, you may want to get an idea of its value for insurance purposes. If the book has a leather cover, it should not be displayed on a wood surface unless the surface is covered by acid-free paper. Wood is acidic and can damage leather. The pages should not be left open and exposed to light or they will discolor. Special archival display cases are available that allow the book to remain open, but they are very pricey. If an autograph expert determines the book is not very valuable, it can be kept on display as long as it isn't exposed to light for long periods of time. ***

No, it's not a saltshaker -- this is a smellingsalt bottle made about in about 1850. It auctioned for $293.

HOLIDAY TIP: Chocolate molds can be used to make candy and other party food. Pour melted butter into the mold, put the filled mold into the freezer. Take the mold out and unmold the fancy shaped pieces of butter for parties. There is hidden value in contemporary pottery. You find it at shops and garage sales at low prices because the marks are unknown. Our special report, "Kovels' Identification Guide to Contemporary American Pottery 1960s to Present," includes more than 180 marks and 60 featured artists. Available only from Kovels for $19.95, plus $4.95 postage and handling. Christmas Morning Brunch With Christmas almost here it's time to plan your Christmas morning brunch. Once the presents have been opened, it's time to sit back and enjoy family and friends. Some of my favorite old time standbys are below. Fix it all or just a little.

Ramp-and-Potato Egg Scramble 6 small (about 3/4 lb.) red potatoes 6 large eggs 1/3 cup water 1/4 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. ground black pepper 2 T. butter or margarine 1/2 cup chopped ramps (white bulbs and green tops)

In steamer or 4-quart saucepan with wire rack, steam potatoes over boiling water until just tender, about 30 minutes. Drain and cool potatoes until easy to handle. Cut potatoes into 3/4-inch chunks. In small bowl, beat eggs, water, salt, and pepper until blended. In 10-inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add potatoes. Cook 3 to 5 minutes, until lightly browned, turning potatoes occasionally with pancake turner. Add ramps and cook a few seconds longer. Pour egg mixture into skillet. Stir from edge toward center of skillet until eggs begin to set. Cover and cook a few minutes longer, until eggs are just set. Makes 6 servings.

1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/8 tsp. salt 4½ to 5 cups all-purpose flour About 1½ quarts vegetable oil, for frying 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar

In 1-quart saucepan, heat milk until bubbles form around side of pan. Remove from heat; add butter and cool to warm. In large bowl, sprinkle yeast and sugar over water. Stir to dissolve; set aside until foamy, about 10 minutes. Add warm milk mixture, egg, nutmeg and salt to yeast mixture. Gradually beat in 3 cups flour until batter is smooth. Add enough remaining flour to make a manageable dough. Turn dough out onto floured surface. Knead, adding more flour if necessary, until dough is smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl. Place dough in bowl, turning to bring oiled side up. Cover loosely with clean cloth. Let rise in warm place, away from drafts, until double in size, about 1 hour. Lightly oil large baking sheet. On lightly floured surface, roll dough to 15- by 10½inch rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Cut dough into 3½- by 3-inch rectangles. Place beignets on oiled baking sheet. Cover loosely with clean cloth and let rise again until double in size, about 45 minutes. Meanwhile, in 4-quart saucepan, heat 2 inches of oil to 350°F on deep-fat thermometer. Fry beignets, a few at a time and turning often, until puffed and golden brown, about 2 minutes. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on brown paper or paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar and serve warm. Makes 15 Beignets.

The Story Of The Birth Of Jesus

Christmas traditions focus on several different aspects of family and spiritual life. While many stories are shared around Christmastime, perhaps none bears more significance than the origin of the Christmas celebration. Sharing the Christmas story is an integral part of holiday gatherings, reminding families that faith is foremost during this festive time of year. The Conception of Jesus Mary was a woman living in the Galilee area of Nazareth. She was engaged to a Jewish carpenter named Joseph. An angel visited the Virgin Mary and told her that she would conceive a child — a son — by the power of the Holy Spirit. When the son was born, she would name him Jesus. Mary questioned the angel, who reassured her that anything was possible

by God and that Jesus would be God’s own son. Joseph was troubled when he found out Mary was with child and even considered breaking their engagement, which was allowed under Jewish law. But God soon sent another angel, this time to Joseph, in a dream. The angel reassured Joseph that his marriage to Mary and the birth of this child were His will. Joseph awoke from his dream and took Mary as his wife soon after, ready and willing to raise the child despite the public humiliation he may experience. The Census During this time the Romans had control over many parts of the world, including where Joseph and Mary resided. Ruler Caesar Augustus decreed that every person living under Roman rule had to return to his town of origin to participate in a census so

everyone could be taxed accordingly. Joseph, hailing from Bethlehem, had to return to this town with his very pregnant bride. They traveled for many days and, upon arriving in Bethlehem, found that the inns were full and there was no available lodging. Mary and Joseph took shelter in a stable and prepared to welcome their son. Jesus’ Arrival According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary gave birth to her firstborn, a son, while in the stable. She wrapped him in cloth and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly

Rick’s Towing, Inc.

host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let ’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. — Luke Chapter 2 Many people visited the baby Jesus, including three wise men from the East who traveled by following a guiding star to bestow gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on the baby king. When Joseph and Mary had performed all the things necessary according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Nazareth with Jesus, who was growing strong in spirit and filled with wisdom and the grace of God.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column about a person who did not vaccinate their house cats, and after one of them got out, lost all of them to feline leukemia. I can relate to this person. I only have one cat, and I thought, for a while, that I could get away without vaccinating her. Fortunately, a friend convinced me otherwise. It turns out that it doesn't take much to protect my baby when she depends on me to take care of her. I've never gone without just to pay for "Racquel's" vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. Please tell your

The Best Gift You Can Give Your Pet

DEAR DONNA: You told them, and I thank you. Vaccinating indoor pets can seem like a pricey extravagance, but it pales in comparison to the cost of treating the diseases that they can contract if they're not vaccinated. To reduce the annual cost, check around for discounted shot clinics. These are usually held on specific dates and places — pet supply stores, public buildings or participating veterinar y clinics. However, these clinics often don't advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which often sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers often know about pet health clinics nearby.

Failure to purchase this tag can result in a $150.00 fine. If you are interested in a Pet of the Week, or any animal, call 533-7647 or visit the Centralia Animal Shelter. The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American author and journalist Emily Kimbrough who made the following sage observation: "Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That's why it's a comfort to go hand in hand." • In Finland, it is traditional to pay a visit to the steam baths on Christmas Day. Nice and clean, Finns then put on new clothes

before enjoying their Christmas dinner, which is served in the evening. • The nation of Canada has the longest coastline in the world. • Lots of people dislike lawyers, right? You might be surprised to learn, though, that it isn't a new phenomenon. In fact, in 1641 the Massachusetts Bay colony made it illegal for anyone to earn money

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make a start on that new workplace challenge. But get more information before you find yourself too deeply involved without knowing in which direction you should go. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might find things becoming tedious as your schedule slows down for the holidays. Use this time to get information about a possible post-New Year job change. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The creative Twin finds outlets for her or his ideas in the early part of the week. The practical Twin takes it a step further and rallies support to turn the ideas into reality. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s time to stop being intimidated by someone’s negative behavior. Start taking positive steps on your own to help strengthen your position down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Look closely at that so-called golden opportunity. Best to be a cautious Cat who approaches things slowly, than one who pounces without knowing where you’ll land. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your apology can resolve that personal situation before it overshadows the holidays. You’ll feel better, even if you’re only partly to blame for what happened. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Avoid overtaxing yourself, even if your energy levels are high and you

by representing another in court, and in 1658, the legislature of Virginia passed legislation expelling all lawyers. • Most people — even word nerds like yours truly! — aren't aware that the plural form of Sphinx is Sphinges. • You might not be surprised to learn that the only bones to be found in a shark's body are in its jaws and teeth. • Hardly anyone in Greece has a Christmas tree. Instead, most homes have a wire suspended across a shallow wooden bowl with water in the bottom. A cross wrapped in a sprig of basil is sus-

feel that you can do it all. Best to pace yourself so you won’t run yourself down before the holidays. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your sense of humor helps get you through a stressful period. Some of your quick quips can take the edge off any remaining negativity being aimed at you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your artistic talents not only help you express yourself these days, but they also set up a line of communication between you and someone very special. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s fine to appreciate the importance of “proper form” for doing things. But relax a bit in order to allow newcomers on the project to feel less intimidated by you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Use your boundless reserve of optimism to persuade others to work with you to resolve a difficult workplace problem before it can ruin your holiday fun. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You brim over with self-confidence as you begin to tackle a new challenge. And, before you know it, you’re not alone: Others have taken the plunge with you. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a highly defined sense of commitment to others. You would make a fine social worker. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

pended from the wire, and the water keeps the basil fresh. Every day during the holiday season, a family member dips the cross and basil into some holy water and sprinkles each room of the house. In addition to the religious significance, this ritual is said to keep away the kallikantzeri, mischievous goblins that appear during the 12 days of Christmas. *** Thought for the Day: "What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist." — Salman Rushdie © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
