EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
Wise Men Worship the King Ben Hur — A Tale of the Christ remains my favorite and most cherished book. Lew Wallace begins his book with the long and arduous journey of the wise men in search of the Christ. The Word of God introduces us to them, “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem saying, ‘Where is He who has been born king of the Jews. For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him’â€? (Matthew 2:1-2 NKJV). The Bible does not say how many wise men there were but many have concluded that there were three, perhaps because of the three gifts given to the Babe of Bethlehem. The Christmas story is full of mystery, miracles, and magnificence. The wise men show us the breathtaking beauty and passion of worshiping the King of all Kings. I hope this does not become an over used clichĂŠ, but “Wise men still seek Him.â€? Why do wise men worship the King? First — SEEKING Christ shows determination and passion. Do you remember this Christmas carol? “We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar; Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. O, star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding guide us to thy perfect light.â€? Fame, fortune, and beauty are fleeting but to be a subject and friend of the King Eternal is worth one's all. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heartâ€? (Jeremiah 29:13). Seeking hearts worship Him with purity and passion. (Isaiah 55:6-7) Second — SATAN’S

plot is to thwart God’s plan of redemption. Satan put a scheme in King Herod’s heart to kill all of the males two years old and under in the environs of Bethlehem. It was foretold in scriptures that this would happen. (Matthew 2:4-8, 13-17; Jeremiah 31:13-15) Satan had tried to destroy the lineage of Christ in Egypt but God protected Moses and used him to deliver Israel. Moses prophesied, “God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people (Acts 3:22). Don’t allow Satan to keep you from worshiping Christ the King. Third — the SOVEREIGN king is the reason the wise men were bold and clear in their purpose to worship Christ. The religious leaders knew the prophecies, “But you Bethlehem . . . Out of you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel (Matthew 2:6; Micah 5:2) David called Him the king of glory. Paul referred to Christ as the eternal, immortal king. (I Timothy 1:17;
6:15) Only those who make Jesus Christ the king of their lives can truly worship the giver of life eternal. He is the King of Salem — the King of Peace. (Hebrews 7:1-2) Fourth — the STAR of heaven is Christ. The wise men were supernaturally guided to Bethlehem by a star. (Matthew 2:10) The Holy Spirit guides you to Christ. Will you bow and worship Him? is the Star of David. (Acts 2:25-36) He is “the root and offspring of David and the bright and morning star, (Revelation 22:16). Fifth — the SYMBOL of the suffering Savior and King. The wise men presented Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These speak of His sacrificial death on the cross for the sins of the world. The wise men fell down and worshipped Christ. What about you? Sixth — SALVATION’S road is traveled by wise men. Being warned in a dream of Herod’s scheme — the wise men returned home another way. When you surrender your life to the Lord and Savior by repentance, faith, and worship you become a new creation. (II Corinthians 5:17) You follow Christ on a different road — the salvation road. Start the New Year on a new road to abundant life — worship Christ the king
of all Kings. Wise men still seek and worship Him. (Romans 10:9 NKJV).

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My husband and I are planning to travel cross-country with our two dogs and are wondering which states require that they be restrained, and what the penalties are? — Rita and Jim, via email DEAR RITA: I misreported this in an earlier column. Actually, no state in the U.S. has yet passed a law specifically requiring pets to wear restraints or be in a carrier when riding in a car. Most legislation in place today considers unrestrained pets a form of distracted driving. Earlier this year, a proposed bill in Maine to

If you have ever had homemade Danish pastries, you will find even the best commercial brand a distant second. This traditional pastry takes time to make, but it's worth the effort. So after the rushed season of Christmas is over, spend some time in the kitchen and make this traditional pastry to enjoy with your family and friends. This is one of my favorite old time recipes.
OP NEW YEEN ARʼS DAY! 1
Pecan Coffee Ring 1 cup milk 2 pkgs. active dry yeast 1/4 cup warm water (105° to 115°F) 1/4 cup sugar 2 large eggs
1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg About 3½ cups all-purpose flour 1 cup (2 sticks) butter
PECAN FILLING: 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 T. butter, softened 2 T. light-brown sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 cup chopped pecans 1/2 cup dark seedless raisins
1 T. water 12 to 16 pecan halves (optional)
1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar 1 to 2 T. milk
In 1-quart saucepan, heat milk just until bubbles form around side of pan. Remove from heat. Cool to warm. In large bowl, sprinkle yeast over water. Stir in half the sugar and set aside until it is foamy, about 10 minutes. Stir in remaining sugar, warm milk, 1 egg, salt, and nutmeg. Stir in 2 cups flour and mix until smooth. Stir in 1 cup flour, or just enough to form a very soft dough. Turn dough out onto floured surface. Knead gently, adding more flour if necessary, just until it forms a soft ball, about 1½ minutes. It should be just barely manageable and will not be elastic. Use a dough scraper to help lift it if necessary. Lightly oil large bowl. Place dough in bowl, turning it to bring oiled side up. Cover with clean cloth and let rise in warm place, away from drafts, until double in size, 1 to 1½ hours. Meanwhile, cut each stick of butter into 8 pieces and place on sheet of waxed paper. Sprinkle butter with 1/4 cup flour. With fingers, quickly work flour into butter just until blended but still firm. Shape butter mixture into 6-inch square. Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate until it has consistency of vegetable shortening, about 15 minutes. On floured surface, invert bowl to remove dough. Do not punch dough down or pastries will be tough. With floured rolling pin, roll dough to 12-inch square. Unwrap butter and place diagonally in center of dough. Bring comers of dough, one at a time, over butter to center, overlapping by 1 inch. Press edges of dough to flatten and seal in butter. With rolling pin, gently roll dough to even 18- by 9-inch rectangle. Be sure edges are even. Do not press too firmly or butter will be forced out. (In a warm kitchen, if butter softens too much, transfer dough to baking sheet and refrigerate until firm.) Bring one 9-inch end of dough rectangle over center third of dough. Brush off excess flour and bring other end over the first to form 3 layers of dough. Roll dough again to a rectangle; fold, wrap, and refrigerate. Repeat 2 more times. Prepare Pecan Filling: In small bowl, combine flour, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon with fork until mixture is crumbly. Stir in chopped pecans and raisins; set filling aside. In a cup, beat remaining egg with water to make egg glaze; set aside. To make 1 large ring, roll dough out to 24- by 18-inch rectangle. For 2 small rings, cut dough in half; keep one half of dough refrigerated until ready to shape. Roll each half to 18- by 12-inch rectangle. Brush rolled dough with some egg glaze; sprinkle with pecan filling. (Use half the filling in each small ring.) Starting from long side, roll dough up, jellyroll style, pinching to seal outside edges. Shape roll in circle or oval on large baking sheet with rim. (Use large jelly-roll pan, pizza pan, or heavy-duty aluminum foil on flat baking sheet with edges of foil turned up to catch drips. ) Pinch ends together to seal into a ring. With very sharp knife, make cuts 3/4 inch apart, around outside edge of ring, cutting to within 1/2 inch of center. Twist cut sections almost flat on baking sheet so filling shows, yet center is still attached. Overlap sections slightly, working around ring. Cover ring with clean cloth and let rise at room temperature, until light and spongy, about 35 min. After ring rises, refrigerate 15 min. before baking to harden butter. Heat oven to 400°F. Carefully brush ring with egg glaze; arrange pecan halves, if desired. Bake small rings 20 to 25 min. or large ring 30 to 40 min. Ring will sound hollow when tapped on top. Remove coffee ring from baking sheet and cool on wire rack. In small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar and enough milk to make a smooth glaze and drizzle over pecan ring. Makes 1 large or 2 small rings. —Elizabeth Fenton

Republicans have tried, on and off, to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling since the 1980s. The effort has always engendered intense opposition and always been abandoned. A provision for drilling in ANWR is included in the Republican tax bill almost as an afterthought. Republicans took a constitut iona l f ig ht against Obamacare's individual mandate to the Supreme Court in 2012, and lost. They targeted it in their Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill earlier this year, and lost. They tried again with a last-ditch "skinny
Call for an appointment or just walk in.
repeal" bill, and lost yet again. Repeal of the individual mandate also is included in the Republican tax bill. As the year ends, President Donald Trump is compiling a solid record of accomplishment. Much of it is unilateral, dependent on extensive executive actions rolling back President Barack Obama's regulations, impressive judicial appointments and the successful fight against ISIS overseas. The tax bill is the significant legislative achievement that heretofore had been missing. For much of the year, Trump's presidency had seemed to be sound and fury signifying not much besides the welcome ascension of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court; now, it is sound and fury signifying a discernible shift of American government to the right. It's hard to see how a conventional Republican president would have done much better, except if he had managed to get
Wednesday, December 27, 2017 Obamacare repealed. The tax cut is big — $1.5 trillion over 10 years, and even more if you account for the budgetary gimmicks — and has changes that conservative economists have sought for decades, particularly the lower corporate rate (from 35 to 21 percent), the move to a territorial tax system (companies would only be taxed on their earnings in the U.S.), and the business expensing (companies can write off the full cost of new buildings and equipment). The administration's deregulatory apparatus has been i n f u l l g e a r. T h e Environmental Protection Agency is unspooling the Waters of the United States and the Clean Power Plan, major Obama-era regulations. The Federal Communications Commission reversed net neutrality. The Education Department rescinded an Obama administration Title IX letter that pushed colleges into abandoning due process in sexual-assault cases. Obama administration rulings that occasioned fierce debates during his time in office have fallen by the wayside with barely a whimper. Obama blocked the
Keystone pipeline. Trump greenlighted it without a fuss. Obama imposed a Health and Human Services mandate that feminists portrayed as the only obstacle between women and a "Handmaid's Tale" future. Trump reversed it, and contraception is still widely and easily available in America. Three acts stand out — pulling out of the Paris accords, decertifying the Iran deal and declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel. All three demonstrated an imperviousness to polite opinion that is one of Trump's signature qualities. The president also began the process of ending DACA, the Obama amnesty for socalled DREAMers, and has re-established a baseline of immigration enforcement that has had an instant impact on illegal border crossings. None of this is to deny Trump's failings. His toxic persona could drive a Democratic wave in the 2018 midterms. Whatever next year brings, though, Republicans aren't leaving this one empty-handed.
