What was the breaking news last week? Not much except the President appointing Anthony Scaramucci as communications director. With that occurring, Sean Spicer chose to resign as press secretary and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the deputy press secretary, assumed the role of press secretary. Sanders recently has been conducting many of the White House press briefings. Little known Communication Director Mike Dubke had resigned in May, but there appeared to be no press coverage of this. Scaramucci, a self-made

No, China Isn't Going to Lead The world has had its delusions about China over the years, but none quite as fantastical as the notion of Beijing assuming the mantle of global leadership. Ever since Donald Trump's election, it has been a journalistic trope to speculate that China is about to take the lead on globalization, climate change and international diplomacy. Knowing his audience, President Xi Jinping has stoked this tripe by mouthing all the right cliches in front of the right audiences. He gave a speech at Davos heavy on the theme of openness and promised to help lead globalization. "Any attempt to cut off the flow of capital, technologies, products, industries and people between economies," Xi said, summoning his best Thomas Friedman, "is simply not possible." S o m e h o w, C h i n a manages the impossible nonetheless. When it comes to information (which Xi omitted from his litany), China cuts itself off from

billionaire from New York City (sound familiar?), has ascended through the business world and, in the last few years, as a television host (sound familiar?) at times on Fox Business News and Wall Street Week. He was involved in the Trump campaign and was part of the transition team at the White House. According to Scaramucci, he helps to bring a more positive, aggressive voice to the White House, focusing on the positive accomplishments of the first six months of the Trump Administration. He also wants to bring a friendlier working rela-

tionship with the national media. But, at the same time, he is also charged with preventing the countless White House leaks to the media and others. Let's wait and see how he handles this juggling act. Speaking of the accomplishments of the first six months of the administration, next week's column will focus on those accomplishments and more with a surprise twist to them.

the rest of the world quite adeptly. According to the pro-democracy group Freedom House, China ranks last in the world in internet freedom, behind Iran and Syria. It blocks Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and jails people for spreading rumors online, i.e., criticizing government officials. How about the free flow of capital? China has tight rules against capital outflows. Technology? China is an expert at stealing it, especially from foreign companies operating in China. Products? Despite its membership in the World Trade Organization, China is robustly mercantilist. Brad Setser of the C ou nc i l on Fore i g n Relations points out that imported manufactures as a share of the Chinese economy peaked in 2003 and have been falling since. What Xi calls "win-win cooperation" is the rest of the world opening its markets to China while China refuses to reciprocate. Xi also toes the Davos line on climate change, to the delight of credulous Westerners. China's leadership consists of making a pledge as part of the Paris accords to reach peak emissions in 2030 — a goal consistent with the trajectory of its economy anyway — and planning to make a mint by selling to the West

green technology it has developed through its characteristic unscrupulous means. There is no doubt that China, the world's secondlargest economy, is much more assertive on the international stage than it used to be, but the idea of it as a global leader, or as a responsible power, or even as an admirable country is daft. It props up the lunatic regime in North Korea because it fears the prospect of a unified, democratic Korea. It is pushing for control of the South China Sea, ignoring a sweeping ruling by an international tribunal against its claims of sovereignty. It is investing massively in its military — and not to support the cause of global openness. Clearly, one motive for the dewy-eyed press coverage of China's purported leadership is a distaste for Donald Trump, who wears his disregard for the global elite on his sleeve. The romance with Xi is a way to tweak him. But, whatever his views on trade or climate change, Trump doesn't run a repressive one-party state. It's perverse to be more comfortable with the president who bans Twitter over the president who uses it indiscriminately.

KFVS12 ‘TOTAL ECLIPSE BLOOD DRIVE’ SET FOR AUG. 11-12 The American Red Cross and KFVS12 are encouraging area blood donors to join them on the dark side to help with emergency blood shortages at the annual KFVS Summer Blood Drive Aug. 11 and 12 in Missouri and Illinois. This year’s theme aligns with the pending total solar eclipse Aug. 21. This blood drive comes when the Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for donors of all types to give now so patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatments they need. Blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, and more donations are needed now to replenish the blood supply. “We really enjoy this partnership and are very

grateful to KFVS12,” said Todd Wagner, director of donor recruitment for the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region. “It always comes at such a critical time for us, and this year is no different. We hope the community comes out once again to help those patients who need it most.” Everyone who attempts to donate will receive a $5 Target.com gift card code and a $3 Subway gift card. In addition, all presenting donors will receive a specially designed ‘Welcome To The Dark Side,’ Total Eclipse’ T-shirt, compliments of Isle Casinos, while supplies last. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to give now to help ensure blood is available for patients in need. Those who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate

YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS The YouthBuild program of Marion and Jefferson Counties is currently taking applications for youth between the ages of 17 and 24 years old who need their high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. Applications can be submitted from now until July 30th for classes that will start in August. Interviews will be conducted in Centralia August 4–5, and in Mt. Vernon between July 31 and August 2. Walk-in interviews will be August 10–11 in Centralia, and August 8–9 in Mt. Vernon. “This program is for any young adult who has dropped out of high school and has trouble getting and keeping a job. We will work with these individuals for nine months to help them study for their HSE or GED test and teach them work skills, so they can provide for themselves and their families,” says Ryan Alton, YouthBuild Program Manager. YouthBuild is a program of Spero Family Services, and is federally funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

This program helps young adults in our own community, living in a lower-income household and without a high school education, be able to earn a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, learn valuable work skills, and place them in jobs to earn money. “It is a great program for young people. Two days each week is spent in HSE or GED classes. Two days are spent in a work study program, either in construction training or certified nurse assistant training. Fridays are a half day of service projects designed to increase community involvement, build teamwork, and leadership development,” adds Mr. Alton. This is a free program. Anyone interested should apply online at www. sperofs.org/youthbuild. For more information, please call 242-6723 ext. 234 for Jefferson County, and 618533-5288 in Marion C ounty. Find us on Facebook too: https:// www.facebook.com/speroyouthbuild

again. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days, and double red cells can be donated every 112 days. Two of the twelve KFVS12 blood drives will be held at Times Square Mall, located at 42nd Street & Broadway, in Mt. Vernon, IL. The first blood drive will be from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 11., and the second will be from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m on Aug. 12. Donors can save time and make appointments by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App or by visiting redcrossblood.org and entering the sponsor code KFVS12. In addition, they can also call 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-7332767). To help reduce wait times, donors are encouraged to make appointments and complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at redcrossblood.

org/rapidpass. To donate blood simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

SOLAR ECLIPSE VIEWING PARTY

Cooking With Lizzie

Grilled Lamp Chops & Veggies There's nothing better than a simple, savory barbecue that features rosemary lamb chops with grilled fresh veggies like pattypan squash, red and yellow peppers, corn on the cob, or whatever happens to be your favorite veggie. Small rosemary sprigs garnish each chop. I also use a larger sprig to brush on the basting sauce. Enjoy.

Don’t miss out on your chance to see the first North American solar eclipse in 37 years. Come to the C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library, 101 S. 7th St., Mt. Vernon, Illinois (618242-6322) on August 21 at 12:30 p.m. Kids will play games, build and launch their own rockets, and eat astronaut ice cream. The party will culminate with a viewing of the total solar eclipse. Eclipse viewing glasses will be provided for free, thanks to a grant from StarNet.com. Caregiver attendance is required.

Melt butter in small pan, then remove from heat and stir in lemon juice, garlic, and chopped rosemary. Trim excess fat from chops; then place chops on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once and basting often with butter mixture, until chips are well browned on outside but still pink in center; cut to test (about 10 minutes). Garnish with rosemary sprigs. Makes 3 to 6 servings.

2 medium-size onions, cut into chunks About 2 T. chopped fresh cilantro (coriander) 1 T. ground coriander 2 tsp. ground cumin 1½ tsp. each pepper, ground cloves, and ground cardamom

1 tsp. each ground ginger, poppy seeds, and ground cinnamon 2½ T. butter or margarine, melted 2 cups plain yogurt 6 T. lemon juice 12 round-bone lamb chops, cut about 1 inch thick

In food processor or blender, combine onions, cilantro, ground coriander, cumin, pepper, cloves, cardamom, ginger, poppy seeds, cinnamon, butter, yogurt, and lemon juice. Whirl until smoothly pureed. Trim excess fat from lamb chops, then place chops in 9x13 inch dish. Pour yogurt marinade over chops and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or until next day, turning chops several times. Lift chops from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade). Place chops on a lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once, until chops are well browned on outside but still pink in center; cut to test (about 10 minutes). Warm reserved marinade in small pan on grill; offer to spoon over individual servings. Makes 6 to 12 servings.

Grilled Lamb Chops With Spiced Peaches 8 to 10 lamb rib chops, cut about 1 inch thick 1/4 cup each sugar and cider vinegar 1 small onion, minced 1/2 cup raisins

1 tsp. each ground cinnamon and ground ginger 3 medium-size ripe peaches, peeled, pitted, and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices Salt and pepper

Trim excess fat from lamb chops, then place chops to one side of a lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once, until well browned on outside but still pink in center; cut to test (about 10 minutes). While chops are cooking, combine sugar, vinegar, onion, raisins, cinnamon, and ginger in an 8 inch to 10 inch frying pan. Place pan on grill next to lamb chops. Cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes. Add peaches and stir gently just until hot (about 3 more minutes). If spiced peaches are done before chops (or vice versa), move cooked food to a cooler part of grill to keep warm until both foods are ready. To serve, let guests season chops to taste with salt and pepper; offer peaches to spoon over meat. Makes 4 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. With iconic songs etched into memory, movie lovers know the film starring G e n e Ke l ly, D e b bi e Reynolds and Donald O’Connor. This stage version, direct from the screenplay, has all the great songs embedded in the story, including “You are My Lucky Star, “Make ‘Em Laugh, “Good Morning and the irrepressible “Singin’ in the Rain. The production, the AllSouthern Illinois High School Theater Project (ASHSTP), produced by McLeod Summer Playhouse (MSP) and Carbondale Community Arts, closes the 2017 summer playhouse season.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the ASHTP combines 26 of the area’s brightest and most talented young performers with a professional staff for a unique experience. The story of the 1952 film is well known. With a transition to talking pictures, a silent-flicker favorite actress with a grating voice finds her career threatened. To help, the studio falsely publicizes an engagement to her leading man and hires an unknown actress to dub her voice. All is well until the leading man discovers himself falling in love with the voice double. Torn, the head-over-heels movie star must choose between his heart and a successful career. Brax Melvin is leading man Don Lockwood, the part played by Gene Kelly in the film. The Frankfort Community High School graduate has appeared in productions across the region, including MSP, ASHSTP and last summer’s Muny Opera in St. Louis. Keagan Schlosser plays his love interest, Kathy Selden, the actress hired for her voice. MSP audiences will remember her show-stopping jump-rope number as Brooke in “Legally Blonde. Garrett James, another area theater-veteran, takes up the role of funny man Cosmo Brown, friend and confidante to the lovestricken Lockwood. Anna Madura, a student at AnnaJonesboro Community High School, portrays Lina Lamont, the star with a squeaky voice.

Snakebite Vaccine Buys Time for Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am commenting on your answer to the owners worried about their dog being bitten by a snake while on vacation out West. The rattlesnake vaccine is actually only $64; the treatment is well over $1,000 per vial of antivenin. If a pet has the vaccine, it is highly possible that it may not need the antivenin. The vaccine should be given to all dogs at risk for snakebite. Please advise your readers to contact their local veterinarian. — Rebecca O., Trinity County, California DEAR REBECCA: Thank you for the correction! I did a little more digging and found detailed advice at the UC Davis School of Veterinar y

7

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area Medicine's website. The snakebite vaccine itself, developed in the early 2000s, is quite inexpensive compared to treatment for a rattlesnake bite. That can run well above $1,000, as you noted. It's important to keep in mind, as the website notes, that the vaccine isn't complete protection. Its greatest benefit is that it buys your dog time after a snakebite so that you can get it to a veterinarian for emergency treatment with antivenin. According to the manufacturer, a vaccinated dog bitten by a poisonous snake needs to get to the vet within 12 hours for further treatment. Frequent boosters (every 4 to 6 months) may be required. It's important to keep in mind that snakebites are generally very rare at national parks, especially if pets and people stay within trail boundaries. Parks have leash requirements so that your pet stays within your sight and control at all times, further minimizing the risk of a bite. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Parables of His Coming If I was informed that the President of the United States or the Queen of England was coming to my house, what would I do? I would dust the whole house (that would take a while), shampoo the carpets, wash the walls, and might even give the dogs a bath and put them in their kennel. What else would I do? I would call all my friends and relatives and tell them of the good news. I would post the event on Facebook, I might even take to Snapchat. There’s someone even greater than any VIP coming back to this earth again. Jesus promised, “And if I go away, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:1-6) If you believe his first coming as a babe in Bethlehem, then you must believe his second coming. Jesus gave many parables concerning his soon return. How then should we live in the light of his coming? BE FULL OF THE BLESSED HOPE! Hopeful people are

happy people. Paul wrote of the true source of hope. “Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us . . . and purify for himself his own special people, zealous of good works.” (Titus 2:13-14) The coming of Jesus is called the blessed hope. I’m not looking for the undertaker, I’m looking for the upper-taker. (I Thessalonians 4:13-18) A post on Facebook says, “We are just passing through. Our hope is eternal and so is our home.” BE READY! Jesus told us numerous times that he is coming again. We don’t know the day nor the hour, but Jesus gave us many signs of the season of his return, such as the fig tree found in Luke 21:25-36. In the Parable of the Ten Virgins Jesus warns

us to be ready at his coming. (Matthew 25:113) Jesus said there were five foolish virgins and five wise virgins that made up a wedding party. A cry was heard, “Behold, the bridegroom is coming, go out to meet him.” The wise virgins trimmed their lamps and went with the bridegroom. The foolish virgins had no oil for their lamps and were left behind. Jesus said, “Watch, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the son of man is coming.” (Matthew 25:13) Be ready! BE MOTIVATED TO LIVE A HOLY AND PASSIONATE LIFE FOR CHRIST! In the Parable of the Ten Virgins, we see a type of the church, the bride, who “have washed their robes in the blood of the lamb” (Revelation 7:14), and are living righteous and passionate lives for their Lord and Savior, while they wait for his return. BE WORKING AND WITNESSING FOR JESUS! In the Parable of the Talents Jesus taught us that when he returns we must give an account of how we used the

talents and resources given to us. (Matthew 25:14-30) In June Clarence Williams had a heart attack and died while in church. He went to heaven and saw Jesus walking toward him. Behind Jesus were millions of children who had died from abuse, starvation, war, and abortion. Jesus said to him, “I am coming soon. But there is much work to do.” As the congregation prayed, Mr. Williams revived and he now is bolder and more zealous for Jesus than ever before. Those working and witnessing for Jesus will be rewarded at Christ’s return. (Acts 1:8; Revelation 20:11-15) Jesus said, “Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” (Revelation 22:7) Jesus is coming very soon! Are you ready? “But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name.” (John 1:12) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
