calculation to a degree, but then the team is charged a luxury tax. For this coming season, the salary cap was set at $99 million and the luxury tax was at $119 million. That's the formula that was used to pay Curry. James — and every other player in the league — feels that market factors should prevail. The NBA players association will be renegotiating the bargaining agreement next year, and James himself will be a part of the team of negotiators. If the past is any barometer, I wouldn't expect ownership to budge. Owners seem to like profits, and they have shown a willingness in the past to lock out players, endure strikes and still get their way when all's said and done. Maybe this time, things will be different. Maybe the luxury tax will have a higher ceiling, and guys like Lebron James can collect hundreds of millions more for bouncing a ball up and down a court. At the end of the day, it's always good to remember one thing: It could be worse ... you could be playing for the New York Knicks.

The Luxurious Life of Stephen Curry If Stephen Curry never scores another point for Golden State, he'll still be worth every penny of the "supermax" contract he signed with the Warriors on the first day of free agency. The deal, which will pay Curry $201 million over the next five seasons, is the largest in NBA history. When you judge Curry's performance over the past few years — three NBA Finals and two championships, recordsetting regular seasons and playoff runs — it's clear that he is well worth the risk going ahead. But if you're Warriors owner Joe Lacob, you can look back to how much you've made to know he's worth the investment. When Lacob bought the team, the Warriors were worth $450 million. Today, they're worth $2.6 billion. That's an astounding return on investment. Ludicrous, even. So ludicrous, it has NBA players actually criticizing the Curry deal as being too

small. Lebron James was the first to speak out on the deal on Twitter because he is the King and as we all know, Twitter is the communication medium of choice for kings and presidents in today's world. "So tell me again why there's a cap on how much a player should get?? Don't answer that. Steph should be getting 400M this summer 5yrs. — LeBron James (@ KingJames) July 1, 2017 James is taking issue with the salary cap in the NBA, the cap that Curry head-butted with his deal. James feels that Curry was worth double, and it's hard to argue the fact. Wh at t e a m ow n e r wouldn't want to see their team's value increase four or five times over? GIRL SCOUTS TO HOST 9TH ANNUAL DANCING WITH OUR STARS Dust off those dancing shoes! Time to join Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) for their 9th Annual Dancing with Our Stars (DWOS) fundraiser. Groove on down to the Mount Vernon Hotel and Event Center in Mt. Vernon on Saturday, August 5, 2017 for this popular fundraiser in support of GSSI’s mission to building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Kim Vrooman, GSSI’s

new Director of Development and Communications shares, “This year’s Dancing with Our Stars competitors are bringing their A-Game! But who will be worthy of the coveted mirror ball trophy? You must attend to find out! With at least 10 top teams competing, this year’s soirée is sure to be off the charts!” Tickets are just $45 each, and the agenda for the evening includes a cocktail hour beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30

p.m., and dance competition at 7:30 p.m. Highlights include a live verbal auction (prizes include Rare Chop House Chef ’s Table and Wine Pairing for 6 guests; 7 Nights in Orlando; Backhoe for a Day; a Traeger Lil’ Tex Elite 22 Grill and more). Table sponsorships are also available for $500 (10 seats per table). Other sponsorship opportunities start at just $100. Hosts for this year’s event are Brandon Bullard with Rare Chop House and

Rachel Hunsell with Mt. Vernon Convention & V i s i t o r s B u r e a u . Choreography services are provided by Shannon Owens of Centre Stage Studios. Through a two part scoring system, teams compete to become champions. Judges’ scores provide the first element toward dancers’ score totals. The second element relies on audience participation. Dancers earn points via fan donation dollars. At the end

of the competition, the coveted mirror ball trophy will go home with the crowd-pleasing team earning the highest overall score. All proceeds provide financial assistance to underserved girls, maintain and improve GSSI camps, and actively develop Girl Scout leadership programs for 12,400 girls while engaging 5,000 adult volunteers in more than 40 counties in Southern Illinois. Girl Scouting has inspired more

than 50 million girls and women since its founding in 1912. Girl Scouting focuses on providing a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience for girls in the 21st century, while ensuring the traditions and values that have been core to Girl Scouting since its beginning remain strong and relevant. For more information about becoming a sponsor for Dancing with Our Stars, or to purchase tickets call 800-345-6858 or email kvrooman@gsofsi.org

YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS The YouthBuild program of Marion and Jefferson Counties is currently taking applications for youth between the ages of 17 and 24 years old who need their high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. Applications can be submitted from now until July 30th for classes that will start in August. Interviews will be conducted

in Centralia August 4–5, and in Mt. Vernon between July 31 and August 2. Walk-in interviews will be August 10–11 in Centralia, and August 8–9 in Mt. Vernon. “This program is for any young adult who has dropped out of high school and has trouble getting and keeping a job. We will work with these individuals for

nine months to help them study for their HSE or GED test and teach them work skills, so they can provide for themselves and their families,” says Ryan Alton, Yout h Bu i l d Pro g r am Manager. YouthBuild is a program of Spero Family Services, and is federally funded through a grant from the

U.S. Department of Labor. This program helps young adults in our own community, living in a lower-income household and without a high school education, be able to earn a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, learn valuable work skills, and place them in jobs to earn money. “It is a great program for

young people. Two days each week is spent in HSE or GED classes. Two days are spent in a work study program, either in construction training or certified nurse assistant training. Fridays are a half day of service projects designed to increase community involvement, build teamwork, and leadership develop-

ment,” adds Mr. Alton. This is a free program. Anyone interested should apply online at www. sperofs.org/youthbuild. For more information, please call 242-6723 ext. 234 for Jefferson County, and 618533-5288 in Marion County. Find us on Facebook too: https://www.facebook.com/ speroyouthbuild

BALLOON FEST 2017 MAJOR SPONSORS Every year the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Balloon Fest Committee members work hard to bring Balloon Fest to our community, but they can’t do it alone. Along with all the hard work that comes with organizing an event of this size, someone has to step up to the plate and donate products, services, and money to support it. Some donors sponsor balloons, balloon pilots, or specific activities; some make small monetary donations; others make very large donations. It all adds up, but the sponsors are critical to the success of the event. Pictured here are some of the major sponsors of Balloon Fest 2017. Be sure to thank them for their contribu-

BALLOON FEST 2017 LANDOWNER AWARDS The landowner awards committee of the 28th annual Centralia Balloon Fest has an-

nounced that a total of $500 in Schnucks Gift Cards will be awarded landowners this year.

Stockings

Balloon Fest will be held Friday through Sunday, Aug. 18, 19, 20 in Foundation Park, located on the east edge of Centralia off State Route 161. Balloon Fest 2017 will award $100 Schnucks Gift Cards to five lucky landowners whose names are drawn at the conclusion of the Balloon Fest. Only landowners whose property is used for random landings by balloonists participating in Balloon Fest 2017 will be eligible. The awards are sponsored by Schnucks. The main purpose of the landowners committee is to

cultivate good will among landowners, balloonists, and the community so everyone can enjoy this spectacular family event. Landowner participation is essential to the success of the Balloon Fest. A white sheet on property is a universal welcome signal for balloonists to land on that property. Also, any open, uncultivated land away from livestock and other animals is considered acceptable for landing, unless pilots are notified to avoid by the landowner or renter. A Balloon Fest landowner committee spokesman said, "We appreciate the many calls from

Wednesday, July 26, 2017 landowners requesting balloons to land on their property. We would like to oblige, although we cannot promise since balloon pilots have little control over the direction of their flight. There is not a set course. Balloon flight paths are controlled by the wind direction, and seldom exceed a ten-mile radius of lift-off at Centralia. Balloons usually fly when the air temperature is coolest (during early morning or late afternoon) at altitudes of 500 to 1000 feet. AREAS TO AVOID: The Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce office also needs to hear from landowners or renters who do not want balloons to land on their property. Those individuals should call the C e nt r a l i a C h a m b e r of Commerce office at 532-6789 prior to Aug. 11 with property descriptions including county, township, range, section, etc.

Area maps will be developed outlining areas for balloon pilots to avoid as landing sights. Balloon pilots come from many states and are friendly people who enjoy entertaining the public. They would not knowingly harm anyone or property. Should the unexpected occur, however, balloonists are insured. Spectators are urged to respect the rights of landowners when following balloons both flying and landing, and to avoid traffic congestion that might damage property or delay crews from assisting downed balloons. The spokesperson said, "We appreciate the enthusiasm area rural landowners have shown in the past and want to thank them again for their support. Continued support can make Balloon Fest 2017 safe, problem free, fun filled, and entertaining for the entire family."

“ONE NIGHT IN MEMPHIS “One Night in Memphis, the official and number one tribute to Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash, will be appearing live at KC’s Jane Knight Auditorium on Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Presented by the KC Friends of the Fine Arts, “One Night in Memphis is the first touring act to perform at the college this year and is a fundraising event for the organization. On Dec. 4, 1956, music history was made. This date found Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley together at Sam Phillip’s Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee A jam session ensued which seems to have happened by pure chance. Little did they know that their jam session was being recorded and preserved for all time, representing all the performers in their prime and the very best music of that era.

“One Night in Memphis is a rocking concert tribute to that night and those legendary Sun Records recording artists. Over 90 minutes of rockabilly, country, gospel and pure 1950’s rock and roll music is performed live and backed by an authentic and energetic rockabilly backup band. Songs include: “Blue Suede Shoes, “Folsom Prison Blues, “Great Balls of Fire, “Whole Lotta Shaking Going On, “Shake, Rattle and Roll, “Don’t Be Cruel, “Hound Dog and many, many more. Reserved seat tickets for “One Night in Memphis are $30 and are available by calling the ticket office at 545-3223 or visiting the website at www.kaskaskia.edu/ soe. Proceeds from the event will underwrite scholarships and enrichment activities for fine and performing arts students at Kaskaskia College.

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself. –Abraham Lincoln

What was the breaking news last week? Not much except the President appointing Anthony Scaramucci as communications director. With that occurring, Sean Spicer chose to resign as press secretary and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the deputy press secretary, assumed the role of press secretary. Sanders recently has been conducting many of the White House press briefings. Little known Communication Director Mike Dubke had resigned in May, but there appeared to be no press coverage of this. Scaramucci, a self-made

No, China Isn't Going to Lead The world has had its delusions about China over the years, but none quite as fantastical as the notion of Beijing assuming the mantle of global leadership. Ever since Donald Trump's election, it has been a journalistic trope to speculate that China is about to take the lead on globalization, climate change and international diplomacy. Knowing his audience, President Xi Jinping has stoked this tripe by mouthing all the right cliches in front of the right audiences. He gave a speech at Davos heavy on the theme of openness and promised to help lead globalization. "Any attempt to cut off the flow of capital, technologies, products, industries and people between economies," Xi said, summoning his best Thomas Friedman, "is simply not possible." S o m e h o w, C h i n a manages the impossible nonetheless. When it comes to information (which Xi omitted from his litany), China cuts itself off from

billionaire from New York City (sound familiar?), has ascended through the business world and, in the last few years, as a television host (sound familiar?) at times on Fox Business News and Wall Street Week. He was involved in the Trump campaign and was part of the transition team at the White House. According to Scaramucci, he helps to bring a more positive, aggressive voice to the White House, focusing on the positive accomplishments of the first six months of the Trump Administration. He also wants to bring a friendlier working rela-

tionship with the national media. But, at the same time, he is also charged with preventing the countless White House leaks to the media and others. Let's wait and see how he handles this juggling act. Speaking of the accomplishments of the first six months of the administration, next week's column will focus on those accomplishments and more with a surprise twist to them.

the rest of the world quite adeptly. According to the pro-democracy group Freedom House, China ranks last in the world in internet freedom, behind Iran and Syria. It blocks Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and jails people for spreading rumors online, i.e., criticizing government officials. How about the free flow of capital? China has tight rules against capital outflows. Technology? China is an expert at stealing it, especially from foreign companies operating in China. Products? Despite its membership in the World Trade Organization, China is robustly mercantilist. Brad Setser of the C ou nc i l on Fore i g n Relations points out that imported manufactures as a share of the Chinese economy peaked in 2003 and have been falling since. What Xi calls "win-win cooperation" is the rest of the world opening its markets to China while China refuses to reciprocate. Xi also toes the Davos line on climate change, to the delight of credulous Westerners. China's leadership consists of making a pledge as part of the Paris accords to reach peak emissions in 2030 — a goal consistent with the trajectory of its economy anyway — and planning to make a mint by selling to the West

green technology it has developed through its characteristic unscrupulous means. There is no doubt that China, the world's secondlargest economy, is much more assertive on the international stage than it used to be, but the idea of it as a global leader, or as a responsible power, or even as an admirable country is daft. It props up the lunatic regime in North Korea because it fears the prospect of a unified, democratic Korea. It is pushing for control of the South China Sea, ignoring a sweeping ruling by an international tribunal against its claims of sovereignty. It is investing massively in its military — and not to support the cause of global openness. Clearly, one motive for the dewy-eyed press coverage of China's purported leadership is a distaste for Donald Trump, who wears his disregard for the global elite on his sleeve. The romance with Xi is a way to tweak him. But, whatever his views on trade or climate change, Trump doesn't run a repressive one-party state. It's perverse to be more comfortable with the president who bans Twitter over the president who uses it indiscriminately.

ARCHAEOLOGY DAY AT CAHOKIA MOUNDS

Cooking With Lizzie

Grilled Lamp Chops & Veggies There's nothing better than a simple, savory barbecue that features rosemary lamb chops with grilled fresh veggies like pattypan squash, red and yellow peppers, corn on the cob, or whatever happens to be your favorite veggie. Small rosemary sprigs garnish each chop. I also use a larger sprig to brush on the basting sauce. Enjoy.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Illinois will host its annual Archaeology Day on Saturday, August 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event features ancient craft demonstrations, archaeological techniques and artifact processing, tours of excavations, and several hands-on activities. The popular event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 618-346-5160 or visit www.cahokiamounds.org.

Rosemary Lamb Chops 1/4 cup butter or margarine 3 T. lemon juice 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed 1/2 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary leaves

6 lamb rib or loin chops, cut about 1 inch thick Fresh rosemary sprigs

Melt butter in small pan, then remove from heat and stir in lemon juice, garlic, and chopped rosemary. Trim excess fat from chops; then place chops on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once and basting often with butter mixture, until chips are well browned on outside but still pink in center; cut to test (about 10 minutes). Garnish with rosemary sprigs. Makes 3 to 6 servings.

Indian Lamb Chops 2 medium-size onions, cut into chunks About 2 T. chopped fresh cilantro (coriander) 1 T. ground coriander 2 tsp. ground cumin 1½ tsp. each pepper, ground cloves, and ground cardamom

1 tsp. each ground ginger, poppy seeds, and ground cinnamon 2½ T. butter or margarine, melted 2 cups plain yogurt 6 T. lemon juice 12 round-bone lamb chops, cut about 1 inch thick

In food processor or blender, combine onions, cilantro, ground coriander, cumin, pepper, cloves, cardamom, ginger, poppy seeds, cinnamon, butter, yogurt, and lemon juice. Whirl until smoothly pureed. Trim excess fat from lamb chops, then place chops in 9x13 inch dish. Pour yogurt marinade over chops and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or until next day, turning chops several times. Lift chops from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade). Place chops on a lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once, until chops are well browned on outside but still pink in center; cut to test (about 10 minutes). Warm reserved marinade in small pan on grill; offer to spoon over individual servings. Makes 6 to 12 servings.

Grilled Lamb Chops With Spiced Peaches 8 to 10 lamb rib chops, cut about 1 inch thick 1/4 cup each sugar and cider vinegar 1 small onion, minced 1/2 cup raisins

1 tsp. each ground cinnamon and ground ginger 3 medium-size ripe peaches, peeled, pitted, and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices Salt and pepper

Trim excess fat from lamb chops, then place chops to one side of a lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once, until well browned on outside but still pink in center; cut to test (about 10 minutes). While chops are cooking, combine sugar, vinegar, onion, raisins, cinnamon, and ginger in an 8 inch to 10 inch frying pan. Place pan on grill next to lamb chops. Cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes. Add peaches and stir gently just until hot (about 3 more minutes). If spiced peaches are done before chops (or vice versa), move cooked food to a cooler part of grill to keep warm until both foods are ready. To serve, let guests season chops to taste with salt and pepper; offer peaches to spoon over meat. Makes 4 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Parables of His Coming If I was informed that the President of the United States or the Queen of England was coming to my house, what would I do? I would dust the whole house (that would take a while), shampoo the carpets, wash the walls, and might even give the dogs a bath and put them in their kennel. What else would I do? I would call all my friends and relatives and tell them of the good news. I would post the event on Facebook, I might even take to Snapchat. There’s someone even greater than any VIP coming back to this earth again. Jesus promised, “And if I go away, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:1-6) If you believe his first coming as a babe in Bethlehem, then you must

believe his second coming. Jesus gave many parables concerning his soon return. How then should we live in the light of his coming? BE FULL OF THE BLESSED HOPE! Hopeful people are happy people. Paul wrote of the true source of hope. “Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us . . . and purify for himself his own special people, zealous of good works.” (Titus 2:13-14) The coming of Jesus is called the blessed hope. I’m not looking for the undertaker, I’m looking for the uppertaker. (I Thessalonians 4:13-18) A post on Facebook says, “We are just passing through. Our hope is eternal and so is our home.” BE READY! Jesus told us numerous times that he

Wednesday, July 26, 2017 is coming again. We don’t know the day nor the hour, but Jesus gave us many signs of the season of his return, such as the fig tree found in Luke 21:25-36. In the Parable of the Ten Virgins Jesus warns us to be ready at his coming. (Matthew 25:1-13) Jesus said there were five foolish virgins and five wise virgins that made up a wedding party. A cry was heard, “Behold, the bridegroom is coming, go out to meet him.” The wise virgins trimmed their lamps and went with the bridegroom. The foolish virgins had no oil for their lamps and were left behind. Jesus said, “Watch, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the son of man is coming .” (Matthew 25:13) Be ready! BE MOTIVATED TO LIVE A HOLY AND PASSIONATE LIFE FOR CHRIST! In the Parable of

the Ten Virgins, we see a type of the church, the bride, who “have washed their robes in the blood of the lamb” (Revelation 7:14), and are living righteous and passionate lives for their Lord and Savior, while they wait for his return. BE WORKING AND WITNESSING FOR JESUS! In the Parable of the Talents Jesus taught us that when he returns we must give an account of how we used the talents and resources given to us. (Matthew 25:14-30) In June Clarence Williams had a heart attack and died while in church. He went to heaven and saw Jesus walking toward him. Behind Jesus were millions of children who had died from abuse, starvation, war, and abortion. Jesus said to him, “I am coming soon. But there is much work to do.” As the congregation prayed, Mr. Williams revived and he now is bolder and more zealous for Jesus than ever before. Those working and witnessing for Jesus will be rewarded at Christ’s return. (Acts 1:8; Revelation 20:1115) Jesus said, “Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” (Revelation 22:7) Jesus is coming very soon! Are you ready? “But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name.” (John 1:12) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Snakebite Vaccine Buys Time for Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am commenting on your answer to the owners worried about their dog being bitten by a snake while on vacation out West. The rattlesnake vaccine is actually only $64; the treatment is well over $1,000 per vial of antivenin. If a pet has the vaccine, it is highly possible that it may not need the antivenin. The vaccine should be given to all dogs at risk for snakebite. Please advise your readers to contact their local veterinarian. — Rebecca O., Trinity County, California DEAR REBECCA: Thank you for the correction! I did a little more

digging and found detailed advice at the UC Davis School of Veterinar y Medicine's website. The snakebite vaccine itself, developed in the early 2000s, is quite inexpensive compared to treatment for a rattlesnake bite. That can run well above $1,000, as you noted. It's important to keep in mind, as the website notes, that the vaccine isn't complete protection. Its greatest benefit is that it buys your dog time after a snakebite so that you can get it to a veterinarian for emergency treatment with antivenin. According to the manufacturer, a vaccinated dog bitten by a poisonous snake needs to get to the vet within 12 hours for further treatment. Frequent boosters (every 4 to 6 months) may be required. It's important to keep in mind that snakebites are generally very rare at national parks, especially if pets and people stay within trail boundaries. Parks have leash requirements so

by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American author and journalist Emily Kimbrough who made the following sage observation: "Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That's why it's a comfort to go hand in hand." • The very first drivethru fast-food restaurant opened in 1948, in Baldwin Park, California. The idea was obviously a

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re wise to let your Arian skepticism question a former adversary’s request to let bygones be bygones. Time will tell if they are trying to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Congratulations. Your hard work soon pays off with some well-deserved recognition. Meanwhile, that important personal relationship needs more attention from you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) That new person in your life seems trustworthy, but don’t turn him or her into a confidant just yet. Remember: The secret you don’t reveal is the one you won’t lose sleep over. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your kindness makes a difference in someone’s life. But by week’s end, a touch of Cancerian envy could create a problem with a colleague. Take care to keep it under control. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new spurt of energy sends you roaring back into that challenging work situation. But be careful not to overdo it, or your sizzle could fizzle before your task is completed. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your practical sense helps you see the logic of being a bit more flexible with a workplace colleague. But you still have a ways to go before there’s a true meeting of the minds. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A surprise situation could cause you to spend more money than you feel

you can afford. But careful budget adjustments will help. Your fiscal picture soon brightens. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That decision you made might still have its detractors, but your supporters are growing. Meanwhile, your personal life takes on some welcome new developments. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Matters of the mind intrigue the sage Sagittarian through week’s end. By then, you should feel more than ready to make room for pursuits of the heart. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The canny Capricorn can offer good counsel to others. But how about taking some advice yourself from a close friend or family member who is able and ready to help? AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new workplace opportunity offers a variety of challenges that you might find intriguing. Best advice: Take things one step at a time so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A bid to revive a relationship that ended on a bitter note needs to be carefully thought out before you can even begin to consider plunging into a new emotional commitment.
